EDITOR’S LETTER “I’M FEELING SUPERSONIC, GIVE ME GIN AND TONIC...” In August’s edition of Muddle Magazine, we’re embracing our Summer of Gin with two bold and classic gin cocktails. This month’s featured cocktails are set to pack a punch with the Americano and Negroni. To make these famed aperitifs, we’ve teamed up with Manchester Gin to curate classically northern twists, thanks to the gin’s dandelion and burdock blend. It’s not just us who are big fans of the Negroni as, in this month’s industry news, we’re sharing the news of a new Negroni dedicated bar which has opened in London, alongside the release of two new bottles with the smooth PURE Vodka and fruity Salcombe Pink Gin. To continue our Summer of Gin celebrations, we’re unveiling our brand new G&T Sets with two of our favourite gins Sipsmith and Manchester Gin. And finally, as the world’s biggest arts festival gets underway in Edinburgh, we’re sharing the secrets of one of the busiest bars in the capital as The Royal Dick at Summerhall gears up to serve over 300,000 people. IT’S TIME TO SAVOUR THE SUMMER!

Cheers, Claire

Aperol Spritz and French 75s all round. Add some fizz to your August thanks to National Prosecco Day. When selecting your bottle of Prosecco, keep in mind what type of drink you’d like to enjoy and pick its perfect partner - Spumante is the bubbliest, Frizzante is a middle-ground fizz while Tranquillo pours with gentle bubbles.

Whether you enjoy it straight, stirred with your favourite mixer, or shaken into famous cocktails, including the Mojito, Daiquiri and Pina Colada, raise a glass to rum with the annual celebration of the sugarcane spirit.

With a name that translates as ‘the very best’, the Mai Tai has quite a reputation to uphold. The rum cocktail was declared a ‘quintessentially tropical’ drink within its official proclamation, which honoured the cocktail’s creation to the City of Oakland, published on August 30th 1944.

BOTTLES & BARS PURE VODKA

It’s all in the name for PURE Vodka. An extremely smooth premium spirit, PURE is made from organic wheat which is then small batch distilled by hand, to the equivalent of 100 pot still distillations, creating an all-natural refreshingly light vodka which is both gluten-free and vegan friendly.

NEGRONI BAR

Did you know the Negroni turns 100 this year? To celebrate the Italian apertif’s century reign, The Chelsea Bar has opened a Negroni-specialist bar inside 11 Cadogan Gardens in Chelsea. Bartender Carmine Passalacqua has curated the specialist Negroni-only menu which features eight twists.

SALCOMBE ROSE GIN

Salcombe Distilling Co has released a new Mediterranean inspired gin. Named after the Sainte Marie lighthouse, which marks the entrance to the Old Port of Marseille, the Sainte Marie gin is inspired by the aromas, flavours and lifestyle of the South of France with a splash of Mediterranean sunshine.

A U G U S T ’ S C O C K TA I L C L U B B O X Introducing a powerful duo of cocktail counterparts… Known for their aperitif qualities, this month’s featured cocktails have stood the test of time for over 150 years. The star of these bold drinks is the opinion-dividing liqueur Campari, but don’t let that deter you, it’s time to try out two of the most classic cocktails around!

IN THE BOX AMERICANO

An Italian classic with an American name, the Americano is dubbed the ‘Father’ of the Negroni. Despite being a precursor to the famed bitter Negroni, the Americano is arguably the lesser known cocktail of the pair. Originally known as ‘Milano-Torino’, as the Campari came from Milan and sweet vermouth from Torino, the longer refreshing cocktail was created in Gaspare Campari’s bar Caè Campari in the 1860s. During the prohibition, an influx of American tourists arrived in Italy looking for a little tipple and the MilanoTorino was a favourite. The cocktail was then dubbed the Americano and has held the name ever since, becoming an iconic drink. Our Americano sticks to the traditional recipe combining Campari and Vermouth. Afterall, the cocktail has reigned as iconic with little adaptation since its creation over 150 years ago.

NEGRONI

The more famous of the Campari-based duo is the Americano’s counterpart the Negroni. Dating back to the 1920s, the Negroni evolved from the Americano when Count Camillo Negroni asked famed bartender Fosco Scarselli at Caffe Cassoni in Florence to strengthen his favourite cocktail by replacing the soda water with gin, as he had fallen in love with the spirit on a recent trip to the UK.

MANCHESTER GIN

Citrusy, nutty and creamy with a taste of the north, through its dandelion and burdock botanical blend, Manchester Signature Gin original balances out the bold flavours in our Negroni and Americano.

SWEET VERMOUTH

Sweet vermouth is a sweetened version of the aromatized fortified wine, with a herbal flavour that can transform your Manhattan in just a few splashes.

F E V E R-T R E E S O D A WAT E R

Using highly carbonated soft spring water, FeverTree bring the final flavour while adding fizz and length to the Americano.

C A M PA R I

A famed liqueur with a bold and bitter taste, Campari’s secret infusion of herbs, fruit and spices adds the bartender’s touch to our featured cocktails.

To differentiate the drink from the Americano, he garnished the drink with an orange twist instead of the lemon twist and so the Negroni was created. We’re using Manchester Gin’s northern flavour to amplify the flavours of the aperitifs that have remained two of the most ordered cocktails around. 6

MANCHESTER S I G N AT U R E G I N It all started with a G&T...

A C I T R U S TA S T E T H AT REPRESENTS THE NORTH

In a basement bar in Manchester, Seb Heeley offered to buy Jen Wiggins a drink. Little did they know her response of ‘a gin and tonic’ would be four words that sparked not only the start of their relationship, but a globally recognised gin brand. From that chance meeting, Seb and Jen soon discovered they had a mutual passion for gin. While getting to know each other, they were also on a mission to find the perfect gin. Upon visiting Atlas bar in Manchester, they ‘borrowed’ a copy of the bar’s endless gin list and began sampling and scoring every spirit out of ten. Quickly discovering they had palates for tasting gin, their original plan was to open a gin-focussed bar. That was until one bar owner showed them a miniature still set up in the back of his venue.

Going on to distil the very first Manchester Gin in the dining room of their first home together, production soon moved to a small distillery and in 2018 Manchester Gin was the most awarded gin of the year. Three stills currently produce every drop of Mancester’s Gin four styles, with each still named after an inspirational Mancunian lady, Wendy after Jen’s late mother, Victoria after comedian and actress Victoria Wood and Emmeline after the iconic suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst. Due to the ever-growing demand and popularity, Manchester Gin is set to open a city-centre distillery in the autumn of 2019 within the railway arches beneath Manchester Central. A classically northern gin with a slight citrus taste, the nutty and creamy flavour perfectly complements August’s featured Italian classics the Negroni and Americano!

MIXOLOGIST OF THE MONTH

SUZIE’S TOP COCKTAIL TIP “It might sound strange, but for me it’s all about the ice cubes. If you have big, hard, solid ice that will rip through your shaker like bullets, it’s not only satisfying to shake but there’s less dilution, it cools the cocktail quicker and it tastes better. It makes a great cocktail!”

The Royal Dick is a quirky bar decorated with artefacts from across the world including authentic vet school fittings, skeletons and an old operating table. Situated within arts-complex Summerhall in Edinburgh, the bar has the freshest gin in the city available on tap piped from the adjoining Pickering’s Gin distillery and beer fresh from the on-site Barney’s Beer brewery. If that’s not enough intrigue to entice you along, The Royal Dick will become one of the must go-to bars in Edinburgh this month as the world’s largest arts festival descends on the capital, with 300,000 visitors expected through the bar’s doors in August. Before the Festival takes over, we caught up with bartender Suzie Jachowicz to find out more. Working at The Royal Dick for 18 months, Suzie started her bartending career at Edinburgh’s Stramash, before moving to another bar in the capital, Akva, where she learnt her cocktail-making skills.

As she originally planned to go to vet school, it was a fateful moment when joining the team at the Royal Dick. “It seemed meant...It’s great working here,” she said. “I’ve always said this will be my last bar job because I don’t think anywhere else could be better...You never know who is going to walk through the door!” Speaking of the bar’s top cocktails Suzie rated the Negroni and Old Fashioned amongst the most ordered. However, it’s the bar’s in-house creation that’s claimed first place, “It was created as a sort of joke by one of the bartenders,” said Suzie. “Now we have a lot of people ordering the Buckfast Daiquiri every day. It’s a crowd pleaser and our top seller!” Contrary, it’s the Negroni that’s Suzie’s top pick. She said: “My personal favourite is the Negroni, particularly because of the vermouth we use. All our ingredients are high quality. I love making them, I love drinking them and it’s the highest compliment when someone comes back and says ‘it’s the best Negroni I’ve ever had’.” Find The Royal Dick at Summerhall in Edinburgh - and make sure you ask for Suzie’s Negroni! 12
