Time flies when you’re having rum... In May’s edition of Muddle Magazine, we’re counting down the days until summer. Make sure you’ve ice in the freezer and the glasses are chilled as what better way to celebrate the sunshine than with two Cuban cocktails - the Mojito and Daiquiri. To make these Cuban treats, this month’s featured spirit is Aluna Coconut Rum, a low sugar all-natural rum with a toasted coconut flavour that makes a smooth and silky sip. Aluna isn’t the only brand we’re shouting about this month. We’ve uncovered the latest bottle launches including two fruity gin liqueurs and a vodka, alongside the opening of a boutique bar in London featuring a rooftop hot tub for summer night drinking. May is also home to our favourite celebration of the year - World Cocktail Day! To commemorate the occasion, we’ve teamed up with drinkstagrammers to share their top cocktails and recipes for you to enjoy at home! All for rum, and rum for all!
Cheers, Claire

1 3 T H - W O R L D C O C K TA I L D AY World Cocktail Day marks the publication date of the first definition of a cocktail. In 1806, New York tabloid ‘The Balance and Columbian Repository’ defined a cocktail as “a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters…” Not too far from today’s widely-referred meaning of a drink containing two or more ingredients, one of which is alcohol. Get ready to celebrate with your favourite cocktail.

A French liqueur available in both green and yellow versions, Chartreuse combines distilled alcohol with 130 herbs, plants and flowers. The liqueur is still made in accordance to the instructions for a secret elixir with curative powers which was given on a manuscript to the Carthusian monks in 1737. Most famously used in The Last Word cocktail, the liqueur can also be enjoyed with Champagne.
Celebrated on the third Saturday in May each year, World Whisky Day is all about making whisky fun and enjoyable. From whisky tastings to distillery tours, there are plenty of events taking place across the UK, or you can host your own - all you need is a bottle of whisky. The only stipulation is to enjoy it your favourite way, whether that’s straight, with your favourite mixer or in a cocktail.

BOTTLES & BARS
BRISTOL GIN LIQUEURS Bristol Distilling Co have unveiled two new beautiful bottles of gin liqueur. Using the distillery’s awardwinning London Dry Gin as the base, 77 Blush combines grapefruit and rose while 77 Berry features a combination of raspberry and pomegranate. As with many gin liqueurs, the sweet flavour combination makes the drinking options endless, from the simple addition of tonic, lemonade or soda to topping with Prosecco for a delicate spritz.
THE BUXTON A new pub named after social reformer Sir Thomas Foxwell Buxton will open in Brick Lane. The pub will also include a 15 bedroom hotel spiraling up towards a guest-only private rooftop bar, featuring a Swedish hot tub and honesty bar. For those not staying, you can still take advantage of the rooftop garden - in a different way - as the bar’s cocktail menu will feature drinks made using ingredients grown within the rooftop space.
ST MARY’S VODKA North Tyneside is home to a new premium small batch spirit thanks to the launch of St Mary’s Vodka. Following the successful launch of their gin in December, both spirits are named after the tiny local island north of Whitley Bay and feature the St Mary’s lighthouse on every bottle. Best served on the rocks, the vodka is smooth enough to sip straight. 4

DAIQUIRI In the bartending world, Daiquiri is the name given to a family of cocktails whose main ingredients are rum, citrus and sugar. The Daiquiri was invented by American mining engineer Jennings Cox, who worked in the iron mines of Daiquirí at the Sierra Maestra Mountains on the South-eastern shore of Cuba. Alongside their salaries, workers received tobacco rations and a monthly ration of local rum which workers often mixed with coffee to create a cocktail of sorts. One night when entertaining guests at home, Jennings ran out of gin. He purchased the easiest liquor he could find, which unsurprisingly was rum, and added lemons, sugar and mineral water creating a punch for his guests. They loved the drink and enquired its name - and so the Daiquiri was born. Nowadays, you’ll be hard-pressed to not see a twisted Daiquiri on any cocktail menu, from fruit infusions to crushed ‘slush’ versions. Our Daiquiri keeps in-line with the original threepart recipe served in perfect measures so you can enjoy the cocktail the way it was intended.

MOJITO The Mojito is one of the world’s best-selling cocktails. Light and refreshing with a citrus kick, the cocktail’s creation is thanks to Sir Francis Drake. In the 16th century, it is believed the Mojito was invented on board Sir Francis Drake’s ship when many of his men began to fall ill with dysentery and scurvy. Believing they would find medicines in Havana, Sir Francis Drake returned to the ship with ‘aguardiente de cana’, a crude form of rum, known as “firewater of the sugar cane”. Mixing the cane spirit with sugar, lime and mint, he created a drink with perceived medicinal value, which likely alleviated symptoms thanks to the lime juice treating scurvy and the mint settling the stomach. Originally named the El Draque, after Sir Francis Drake, this drink is widely believed to have been the world’s first ever cocktail. The cocktail was then ‘dolled up’ with the addition of carbonated water, ice and served in a tall glass when it was given its Mojito name. To this day, restaurant-bar La Bodeguita del medio in Havana, Cuba claims to be the cocktail’s birthplace with Ernest Hemmingway apparently a fan of their version of the drink. Our Mojito adds a splash of lemon juice for an extra zesty kick!

ALUNA RUM Aluna combines all-natural toasted coconut flavours to create a silkily smooth rum. Combining rums sourced from Guatemala and the Caribbean, the Guatemalan rum used in the blend is made with virgin sugar cane honey (known as miel de caña) which is fermented using a unique strain of yeast from pineapple, making the rum lighter and smoother with a natural sweetness, before the spirit is lightly aged in oak. Selected Caribbean rums add the classic wellloved rum taste, before lightly toasted natural coconut adds an extra element to the final flavour. Once combined, the rum is cut with organic coconut water for the final touch to ensure a smooth and clean finish. The term Aluna relates to the lunar cycle. If you look closely at the label, you will see the design incorporates phases of the moon alongside the mandala design, a spiritual symbol for the universe.
Thanks to its ingredients and distillation method, Aluna Coconut is a drier-style rum which contains a fraction of the sugar typically found in rum. Don’t just take our word for it! Aluna won Best Flavoured Rum at the World Rum Awards 2018. As featured in May’s Box, Aluna Coconut Rum’s smoothness complements the balanced flavours of our summer-ready Mojito and Daiquiri!

May 13th marks our favourite holiday of all World Cocktail Day! A celebration of cocktails around the globe, World Cocktail Day marks the publication date of the first definition of a cocktail in the 1806 May edition of New York newspaper ‘The Balance and Columbian Repository’ . The first printed definition stated a cocktail was “a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters…”
From the first definition to the modern interpretation, we now refer to a cocktail as a drink that contains two or more ingredients, one of which is alcoholic. Widely accessible, with recipes easy to adapt to suit every taste, cocktails are now embedded in our drinking culture. To celebrate World Cocktail Day, we’ve teamed up with top Drinkstagrammers to share their favourite cocktails with recipes that you can recreate at home.
