National Bourbon Day is a US celebration that marks the date when the first bourbon was created. Legend has it that on June 14th in 1789 Reverend Elijah Craig produced the first whisky distilled from maize which was given the name Bourbon as he lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky. To this day, the term bourbon can only be used if the whiskey is distilled in the US.
Dry, dirty, shaken or stirred, it’s the perfect time to enjoy a Martini. The simple two-part recipe can be altered any way you prefer, simply combine your chosen gin and vermouth and add your garnish of choice. We recommend mixing 50ml of Martin Miller’s Gin with 10ml of dry vermouth in a mixing jug with ice before straining into a Martini glass and finishing with a cut of lemon peel.

OLD FASHIONED There’s no denial that the Old Fashioned is one of the most famous original cocktails of them all. The most ordered cocktail in America, the Old Fashioned is also currently the number one drink in almost 30% of the world’s best bars. An Old Fashioned, as we know it, is a delicious mix of whisky, sugar and bitters, with the recipe balancing sweetened sugar with aromatised bitters and warming whisky. The original Old Fashioned is credited to bartender James E. Pepper at the The Pendennis Club in 1881. A private social club in Louisville, it is said that patrons refused to change with the times, bucking the elaborate trends, and would ask for a cocktail ‘made the old fashioned way’ relating to the first meaning of a cocktail as published in 1806. It is believed that James Pepper was a regular guest of New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and he would order this Old Fashioned cocktail and pass on the enjoyment to other guests, which resulted in the surge in popularity of the drink. The Old Fashioned became a style of drink, rather than the specific recipe we know, until 1880 when the Chicago Tribune printed and defined the cocktail recipe as an ‘Old Fashioned’. Still claiming to be the birthplace of the drink, Louisville now celebrates Old Fashioned Fortnight, an entire two-week celebration of cocktail inspired parties and events, concluding on National Bourbon Day. The Old Fashioned has evolved over time with various methods and ingredient combinations. Arguably, no two bartenders will agree on a single recipe. We reckon why argue with the best? Our version dates back to the original three-part recipe with our tartan twist adding smoky flavours with the peaty Smokehead Whisky.

MANHATTAN Mysterious yet sophisticated, the Manhattan has been a staple of the bar scene since the late 19th century. The cocktail is said to have been created by an enigmatic bartender known simply by the name ‘Black’ who worked at New York’s Hoffman House. According to William F. Mulhall in the 1923 Valentine’s Manual of Old New York, “The Manhattan cocktail was invented by a man named Black, who kept a place ten doors below Houston Street on Broadway in the 1860s - probably the most famous drink in the world in its time.” The Manhattan is a well-balanced yet strong cocktail that consists of just three ingredients whisky, vermouth and bitters. Stirred with ice and, typically, garnished with a cherry, the exact ingredients and proportions are widely up for debate. At the time, the main ingredient used was rye whiskey, most likely because of the many distilleries in upstate New York. However, since its creation, alike every cocktail, bartenders have taken the classic and made it their own - just like us at Tipple Box HQ! We’re using Smokehead whisky in our Manhattan to add a peaty edge to the timeless and tasty cocktail! 6

SMOKEHEAD WHISKY
As an outdated perception, whisky is often thought of as an ‘older man’s drink’, but did you know in 2017 nearly a third of all whisky drinkers in the UK were female? Thanks to its links to high-profile whisky clubs and private cigar lounges, whisky became known as a gentlemen’s tipple. With a bold flavour and straight-up serve, there was no mixing or messing around. However, in recent years, bartenders discovered the spirits mixing potential as a plethora of new cocktails were created, opening up whisky to a millennial audience in a new way as single malts were top of the list for those looking to branch into the whisky world. Alike the enjoyment of any spirit, the journey to enjoying whisky is a personal process. We will all have our own flavour preferences and choice, but if you’re looking for something bold to begin with or branch out, we’ve found the perfect whisky to introduce you to the smoky single malt taste with Smokehead. Founded in 2006, Smokehead Whisky is a beautiful, bold Scotch malt that’s shrouded in mystery. Smokehead is bottled with no age statement and intriguingly no distillery listed upon the bottle, the only clue is in the ‘Islay Single Malt’ meaning it comes from a single distillery on the peat isle. Hailing from Islay, the whisky embraces the flavours of its rugged coastal surroundings and the region’s renowned peated characteristics with a wild and bold flavour. There’s no denying Smokehead’s peat infusion as the smell will hit you like the smoke from a bonfire before upon opening, before subtle notes of toffee, caramel and salty seaweed linger with a citrusy tang from ginger, lemon and mandarin. We’re embracing Smokehead’s Islay profile in our June cocktails, twisting the bitter and citrusy classic Old Fashioned into a peaty potent sip with a hint of sweetness, while our Manhattan keeps it strong and bold with a peppery twist. 7
