Classes at Chapel Cottage Studio: Friendly, informal Art classes for all abilities!

We aim for a friendly “home from home” atmosphere at CCS where students are encouraged to have a cuppa and a chat while they learn.

It doesn’t matter if you haven’t picked up a pencil since school, or if you’re a life long artist, everybody is welcome here. We strongly believe that ART IS FOR EVERYONE and everyone can learn to draw and paint. There are so many benefits to coming along to an Art class :

Cwtch Cafe Lunches:

We have teamed up with the wonderful Cwtch Cafe in Abergavenny to offer a delicious range of lunches for students attending full day or multiple day classes here at CCS! Choose from a tempting seasonal selection of lunch options including sandwiches, quiches and salads plus a slice of home made cake and a cold drink as well!

Lunches are available for pre-order.

Lino Printing CCS Courses

Tutor: Rachel Cadman

Cost: £270 pp

In this series of six workshops we will be exploring lino printing. From carving a design for a basic single colour print to using multiple plates, and reduction lino printing. We will look at inks and the different materials you can print onto, and experiment with the many wonderful effects you can achieve. No experience necessary, suitable for all abilities. All materials included.

Pencil Drawing

This monthly class will focus on the range of skills required for figurative pencil drawing. You will improve your observational skills as well as learning about perspective, light and shade, edges, spaces and relationships, a corner stone skill for any artist. No experience necessary.

Portrait Painting

Dates: April 10th, 17th, 24th, May 1st, 8th, 15th

Cost: £200 pp

This six week course will guide students through the process of composing and capturing a true likeness of a photographic reference. As we take our portraits from sketches to fully fleshed out drawings and paintings we will be covering the fundamentals of measuring, composition and how to correctly represent tonal values whilst exploring colour. Students may work in any medium. Suitable for all abilities.

Nature in Art - Gloucestershire

Sunday 24th September 2023

9.00 am - 5.30pm approx

Spend the day exploring the world’s first museum and art gallery dedicated to fine, decorative and applied art inspired by nature. After a welcome talk from the museum staff, take your time touring the collections and exhibitions or take the opportunity to sketch or paint around the sculpture trail and gardens. Bring along a picnic for the day or enjoy a light lunch from Haywards Coffee Shop including unlimited tea and coffee (available by pre-order at £13).

Dinefwr Castle & Newton House - Llandeilo

A wonderful opportunity to visit the Dinefwr Estate in Carmarthenshire, including Newton House a 17C Manor House at the heart of the estate, the 12C Dinefwr Castle and 800 acres of ancient parkland with resident deer! Sketch and paint to your hearts delight or you might prefer to soak up the history and learn about life at Dinefwr over the centuries. Bring along a picnic or indulge in a delicious lunch from the historic Billiard Room Cafe.

St Fagans National Museum of History - Cardiff

Wednesday 3rd July 2024

9.00am - 5.30pm approx

Enjoy a day exploring Wales’s most popular heritage attraction, set in the grounds of the magnificent St Fagans Castle and gardens, a late 16th-century manor house. With over 40 buildings set in 100 acres of parkland, St Fagans is an artists paradise! Sketch your way around the park absorbing the history and heritage as you go. Bring along a picnic for the day or treat yourself at one of the many cafés and restaurants on site.

Once again we have a selection of half day workshops alongside our usual full day and multiple day workshops. Half day workshops are held the day before a full day workshop, usually on a related topic. Students can book in for a half day, a full day or both the half day and full day workshops together in order to gain a better understanding of the particular topic or technique.

In this exciting mixed media workshop students will be experimenting with the balance between abstract and realism with an expressive representation of the ever popular seed head, using a combination of watercolours as well as other medium and some unusual tools for application! Title: Ring Tailed Lemur in watercolour and inks

In this workshop students will be experimenting with watercolour and inks to create an expressive portrait of a ring tailed lemur. Ali will be looking at ways of creating life and energy in the painting through the method of application. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Revealing Layers - abstract workshop

Creating an abstract painting in Acrylic. We will build up layers of gestural paint that will reveal and conceal. Starting with a vibrant background to a calming mid ground and finally bringing the composition together with the foreground. Suitable for all abilities.

Within this full day acrylic painting workshop, you will have the opportunity to experiment with colour, composition, brush strokes and texture. A path in the landscape can create a great sense of perspective and depth within a composition. We will look at how contrast in a painting can bring it to life and how harmonious colour can add to this. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Winter Trees in watercolour

Spend a day learning how to draw and paint winter trees. Winter trees come in many guises, solitary hedgerow giants, copses and ivy clad oldies. We shall take a look at how sketch them and how to paint a winter tree scene in watercolour. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Harbour Sunrise in pastels

Tutor: Richard Suckling

Date: Friday 20th Oct ‘23 Cost: £40 pp Time: 13.30 - 16.30

In this class we will create a Harbour scene depicted at sunrise. Starting with a quick sketch to plan our composition and tonal arrangement, we will then take this sketch and work it up to a finished pastel painting together. We will look at composition, colour choice, mark making and how to simplify complicated subject matter to maximum effect. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Be Bold with your pastels!

Date: Saturday 21st Oct ‘23 Cost: £75 pp Time: 10.00 - 16.00 This full day course will concentrate on encouraging a bolder approach to pastel painting. We will discover how being more daring with our mark making, colour choices and compositions will help us to push our pastel painting beyond the purely representational approach to the medium. This course will be suitable for all abilities.

Title: Autumnal Still Life in acrylics

We will learn to construct an interesting arrangement and how to develop this into a finished composition. Along the way we shall be developing a deeper understanding of how to mix and use those difficult natural browns and golds without the painting becoming heavy and how to organise colours and tones in order to explain form and depth. This workshop will be all about creating “Low angle, strong sunlight” one of the most important skills in terms of creating tonal dynamics. Students will also learn how to optimize the full range of colour and tonal effects for maximum impact. If you, like so many others, have a fascination for hares, then here is an opportunity for you to learn how to paint one in just one day. Date: Saturday 18th Nov ‘23 Cost: £90 pp Time: 10.00 - 16.00 Catherine will demonstrate watercolour’s fantastic ability to create soft veils of colour that resemble water. Practice wet-in-wet painting techniques. Drop running pigment and watch it mix on the page to form deep foliage. Use ‘lifting-off’ techniques to create subtle reflections. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Understanding Tonal Values in oils or acrylics

Looking at the theory of creating ‘notan’ (or tonal value) studies and why it is an important tool for artists to explore different arrangements of light and dark elements within a composition before beginning a painting. Focusing on practical ways to create strong designs. We will do some simple loose sketches from photographs before transferring onto canvas in oils or acrylics. Suitable for all abilities.

Take your pick from the selection of seasonal flowers. We will then look at arranging and lighting the flowers with different coloured backgrounds, creating interesting and unusual compositions and colour relationships. We will create a simple tonal sketch on the canvas, before applying the paint in a dynamic way: focusing on colour, brushwork and composition. Suitable for all abilities.

In this workshop students will be experimenting with a range of mixed media to create a delicate yet lively study of garden birds. In this workshop students will be using watercolour and collage to create an expressive painting of beautiful golden Daffodils. Using the Horizon line as a springboard, this workshop will investigate the powerful images that can be created from the perspective of the horizon as focal point in a painting. An informal and loose approach will develop confidence and skill sets for both novice and experienced painters. Suitable for all abilities.

This workshop will focus on the processes that lead to creating atmospheric landscapes. This informal session will allow all involved to let loose on the canvas. You will start with warm up sketching and loose painting experiments to find a style that suits. Title: Equestrian Art in oils

In this step by step workshop, students will work along with Elin to create an equestrian painting in oils. Elin began her career as an Artist at the age of 11 when she gained her first commission to paint a Welsh Cob and she has spent a huge amount of time studying and painting equestrian subjects. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Hellebore & Daffodils in acrylics

Students will create a small flower composition and develop this into a painting. We will learn how to mix and use those difficult natural colours in different shades and to give form and depth, keeping things light and delicate to reflect the structure of the subject. For the brave, there’s also the challenge of the water in a glass vase! Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Two day Portraits in oils workshop

In this two day workshop students will be working step by step along with Amanda to create a beautiful figurative portrait painting from photographic reference in oils. Day one will focus on understanding the importance of tone and values and day two will look at the use of colour in completing your portrait, including tips for effective colour matching. Title: Paint like a wild beast!

Les Fauves (the Wild Beasts) is the name given to a group of early 20th century artists because of their surprisingly colourful paintings. This course is for all of you who would like to paint expressively with bright and bold colours, exploring a range of medium including acrylics and coloured pencils. Suitable for all abilities - all materials included.

Title: Painting the weather in watercolour

An exciting workshop exploring and creating an Expressive Cityscape painting. Using Acrylic paints and inks create your very own semi abstract skyline by experimenting with various techniques such as dragging, scraping, dripping and multi-colour loaded brush. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Introduction to Sketchbooking

A sketchbook can help to clarify ideas and compositions. It can be used as a thinkpad and a place to experiment with different tools and techniques. It can be an illustrated journal of a trip you take or your daily life. This workshop begins with you making your own sketchbook and then filling the pages in a variety of ways to test out which work best for you. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Fifteen ways to use your sketchbook!

The goal of this course is to inspire you to use your sketchbooks as think pads, illustrated journals, a space to experiment and a place to communicate more intimately with your inner artist. Over a two day period, a variety of techniques and approaches to working in a sketchbook will be presented to adapt to your personal process of sketching. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Abstract to Landscape in mixed media

Date: Saturday 20th Apr ‘24 Cost: £75 pp Time: 10.00 - 16.00

You will begin this workshop creating a range of abstract imagery with a whole host of mixed-media. Scott will get you mark making with paints, inks, charcoal, pastels, and anything else you can find in the studio to put colour onto the page. You will then use this imagery as inspiration to develop a series of studies and work towards a completed landscape painting. Suitable for all abilities.

Title: Capturing Water in pastels

How to capture the energy and ever-changing beauty of water with soft pastels. Rebecca will demonstrate and show examples of mark-making techniques and colour choices for painting water with pastels, including streams, rivers and the sea. Students can work on one or more pieces during the day. Suitable for those with some painting experience.

Drawing animals with soft pastels, Conte crayons, charcoal and pastel pencils. Including demonstrations and lots of help and advice, on how to draw the structure of animals’ heads, as well as lots of techniques for capturing the textures of fur, feathers, and shiny coats. Learn about line as well as running,wet-in-wet watercolour techniques in this busy day. Suitable for those with some painting experience.

Along the way we will learn a different way of working expressively with watercolour, understanding that recording the values of colour and tone correctly can sometimes be more important that keeping strictly to the lines! In this two day workshop students will be working step by step along with Amanda to create a beautiful figurative still life study in oils. In this class we will create a Spanish landscape drenched in Mediterranean sunshine. Starting with a sketch to give us a guide whilst painting we will work together to create a hot colourful Spanish scene. This class will be very much about colour and light and the differences in the palette needed to paint in hotter locations. This class will be suitable for all abilities.

Together we will work through a stage by stage process to create a Pet Portrait in Oils or Acrylics using an ‘islands to oceans’ method of working. We are aiming to make the eyes come alive and give the animal and your painting lots of personality! I hope to inspire you with some new ideas and techniques to take away with you and apply to your own work. Suitable for all abilities.

Cancellations:

If for any reason we have to cancel your booking, we will offer you a refund, a credit note or transfer your booking to another class of your choice (subject to availability).

If for any reason you have to cancel your booking the policy is as follows:

• Notification by email at least 2 weeks before the start of your class/event – refund issued.

• Notification by email less than 2 weeks before the start of your class/event – no refund issued

If we are able to fill your place with another paying student, we are very happy to offer you a refund regardless of when you cancel. Obviously the more notice we have, the easier it will be to fill your place.

Please note that there is a £5 administration fee payable in respect of refunds. This is to cover the administration time required and will be deducted from your refund.

Covid 19:

Since the pandemic we have now returned to a more familiar class structure here at CCS.

Visitors are still encouraged to be vigilant and anyone who is symptomatic should stay home and avoid contact with others as per Welsh Government advice.

Visitors are reminded to regularly wash/sanitise their hands and the Studio will continue to be thoroughly cleaned once a week alongside normal day to day cleaning.

Face masks are no longer a requirement, however anyone wishing to continue to wear a mask is very welcome to do so.
