EDITOR’S LETTER Do more, spend less – sounds like a sweet deal, right? We think so too, which is why we’ve been hunkering down in lengthy meetings here at TNT Towers, subsisting only on a supply of M&S fizzy worms and suspiciously cheap ‘French Lager’, to make it happen. Thing is, we understand why you’re here – to make the most of an incredible city and all those travel opportunities on your doorstep. Now you can join our new myTNT VIP members club (P6) and do exactly that with myTNT VIP exclusive discounts. Enjoy!

no sweat sports day

carnaby sound music festival

luke jermay: sixth sense

The second annual silly sports day brings beer pong, rockpaper-scissors, limbo and a staring competition to the roof terrace and ground floor bar at the Queen of Hoxton. It’s competitive sports minus the seriousness and with added alcohol. Prizes for the best dressed and DJs from 3pm. Price is per five-person team.

Famous fashion hub Carnaby Street has a long association with music – Mick Jagger once bought his threads here and Jimi Hendrix played the Bag O’Nails club. This one-day fest celebrates this heritage with 15 bands, including Kids In Glass Houses, and 10 DJs playing urban and rock to punk and jazz, with a 20 per cent shopping discount, too.

Psychological illusionist Jermay has worked as a consultant for Derren Brown and Dynamo, and was dubbed ‘the real mentalist’ re: the Simon Baker-starring hit US series for which he also advises. Now he’s out solo, with his debut London headline show. Prepare to be astounded!

Join the club: hands up who’s a myTNT VIP

Do more for less So much to do, so little money. Fret not – we’ve created a myTNT VIP members club to nab you huge savings. Here’s how Words LAURA CHUBB London life can be bloody expensive – the average cost of a few bevvies down the pub is ample testament to that. So how to get the most out of life in the Big Smoke and all those awesome travel opportunities on your doorstep without going bankrupt? TNT feels your pain – why live in this kick-ass city if you can’t afford to leave your flat and enjoy it? Which is why, to celebrate our 30th birthday this year, we’re launching a myTNT VIP members club, giving you the chance to do more in London and beyond for less. This includes everything from money off meals to exclusive savings on travel. Sound too good to be true? Check this out: it’s £50 to join, but if you’re quick you’ll make your money back on the spot. The first 100 to sign up get a discount Cuisine Card worth £29.99, the first 50 to join also get a case of Bondi Beer worth £24 (plus free delivery), the first 30 to join also get free 8th Day Adventure membership worth £140 a year (it’s a sport, adventure and social club that takes you to hundreds of events annually), and everyone gets a free 24-page Albelli hardback photo album worth £15.95. 6

TNT_1557_06 6

But whether you’re one of the first few to sign up or not, you’ll still make that money back in spades. Becoming a member gets you access to travel discounts that are offered only to you (that’s what it means to be a VIP, see?), plus the VIP package for our Travel Show (think more deals and queue jumping), free access to TNT events and free delivery of the mag to your door every week. We’ll also keep adding discount deals that are available only to you throughout the year. The bottom line: as a TNT VIP, you can’t fail to save loads of wonga. Getting your mitts on a case of Bondi Beer is nothing to be sniffed at – CEO Ross Bennie is a Sydneysider born and bred and he brewed it, so he tells us, because he felt what was widely on offer in London “didn’t represent the best of Aussie beer” (not naming any names). Bondi even has its roots in Australian history: the Saaz hop in the recipe was the first hop to be brought over to Australia (from Germany) to make the very first Aussie beers. It’s taken off quickly, starting in a microbrewery in Sydney to land on these shores just three years later. Sounds

like a dream come true. Has it been? “A guy from Sydney with his very own beer brand called Bondi?” Bennie laughs. “It’s every boy’s dream!” And while there are plans to create a new brew already, Bennie reckons he’s already come up with the ideal bevvie. “It’s been designed with the irreverence of Oz in mind – it’s a fun beer, a party beer, a barbecue beer.” Just our type. The Cuisine Card will help you soak up all that grog on the cheap, bagging you up to half off your bill at loads of London’s premier restaurants, including Planet Hollywood, Tiger Tiger, La Tasca and Shaka Zulu. Owner Justin Hodnett tells us it’ll even nab you money off two restaurants in Paris: “We’ve got a foothold in Europe now so watch this space.” So you might end up saving on meals on your travels, too. Bonus. MORE VIP DISCOUNTS & DEALS ›› Sign up at tntmagazine.com/mytnt-vip You can also win a case of Bondi Beer with our blog comp. Mix masters: cocktails and cool without the pretension

BAR

Right in the heart of Shoreditch, Verge bar has the kind of downbeat cool you’d expect – huge posters of Mick Jagger and Bob Marley hang on the walls, and east London hipsters sprawl over the sofas. The bar has massive windows that are kept open during the summer, perfect if you fancy admiring the street art on the walls outside or doing some people watching as you sip a cocktail or two. You should definitely be drinking cocktails here, as they’re tip top. The bar staff really are pros, and happy to whizz you up something off the menu, make recommendations or even let you in on a secret mixologist’s tip or two. THE GRUB Eating’s cheating, right? Well it isn’t, that would be irresponsible. Nevertheless, the only grub you’ll find here is olives and nuts. THE SCENE

Choose tipples such as the Effen Blind, which is made with black cherry vodka, cranberry juice and fruit purees, or the Sailor’s Daiquiri, with its healthy slug of spiced rum. There’s also an interesting array of spirits, classics and premiums varieties, and an array of obscure flavoured and infused liquors, plus draft and bottled beers and a reasonable wine list. BILL PLEASE Cocktails from £7.50; spirits from £3.80/ £6 (25ml/ 50ml). VERDICT A surprisingly unpretentious atmosphere, great drinks and pleasant staff – what more could you ask for? Absinthe wine gums, alcoholic ice cubes that have been sculpted to resemble Lego men, goat’s cheese lollipops ... are you spotting a theme? It’s like a big playground for adults. Yipee, etc. facebook.com/thetoyshopbar

FOODIE FESTIVITIES Foodies: assemble! The fourth edition of gourmet get-together Feast is cooking up a treat on July 4-7 in Brick Lane Yard, near Spitalfields Market. As well as serving up masses of munchies from some of London’s most exciting food traders, there’ll be coconut shies, a mini croquet lawn and a prosecco bar to keep you entertained. Stalls will feature food from the likes of Flat Iron (serving grass-fed wagyu shortrib beef from NZ), corndogs from New Yorkstyle deli Mishkin’s and booze-infused sweets from Meringue Girls. Tickets are £9 and selling fast. wefeast.co.uk

drink what you sow ”Ever-changing orgy of drinking, dining and weird culture” popup Kitchen Party is putting on a masterclass in mixing cocktails with homegrown ingredients, such as mint or even fennel. A two-hour interactive workshop, you’ll be asked to bring along an ingredient you can grow yourself and will see how to blend it expertly with booze. Students will also get a chance to make their own concoctions and there’ll be plenty of tasting going on. Tickets £30, until July 6, near Farringdon.

The famous cock PUB GRUB

If you’ve ever hopped off the Tube at Highbury and Islington station you’ll definitely have had a little chuckle at the name of this pub. Previously a dingy and slightly threatening looking prospect, The Famous Cock has been given a lick of paint by its Smith & Jones chain overlords and is now a pretty welcoming option for meeting mates to start a night out with a bite to eat, before heading to one of the excellent nearby music venues – the Union Chapel or down ‘n’ dirty rock venue The Garage, for example. Prop yourself up near the large front window – it’s an excellent spot for people watching. The grub My friend was a little underwhelmed by her gnocci with wild mushrooms and sage cream, though my house burger was good quality beef and super juicy, served in a brioche bun with pickles and beefsteak tomato. With the pub being a stone’s throw from McDonald’s you’d think it would be an opportunity to axe the skinny chips offered with most of the main meals in favour of the chunkier ‘crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle’ alternative. But alas, no. Snacks include fish finger sandwiches and shareable platters, such as the charcuterie board, which features courgette fritters with gremolata, cured meats and olives. There’s also a mezze board, with chargrilled peppers, tomatoes with pesto, hummus, tzatziki and feta cheese, or get stuck into a big juicy steak and Abbot Ale pie with mash. THE SCENE

A tasty pint of Cornish Doom Bar ale comes recommended, or if you’re in the mood for woo-woos all round you’ll want to turn up in time for the two-for-one cocktails served 5pm-10pm. If you’re feeling guilty after guzzling pies and burgers, there’s skinny low-cal cocktails on offer, including the Slim Pickings, a concoction of Jack Daniel’s, agave nectar, pineapple and lemon juice. Bill please Mains from £5.95; platters £11.50; pints £3.50-£4.50; wine from £3.90 per glass; cocktails £7.95 (remember the 2-4-1 times) or £15 per pitcher. verdict Decent inexpensive pub grub and a good start for a night out. Plan B, Azealia Banks and Goldfrapp (below) headline this three-day east London pop and dance fest. Joining them are Flying Lotus, SBTRKT, Hurts, David Rodigan, Wiley, Frankie Knuckles, Jurassic 5, Oddisee, Gold Panda and loads more. A stone’s throw from the City, it’s a full-on event with a notoriousy upfor-it crowd, with the after-party club nights across town tempting the die-hards instead of a muddy tent in a field somewhere.

Beck might have a devil’s haircut but he hasn’t got any copies of his latest album, Song Reader, at least not ones recorded by him, which makes this extra-special performance of the album an absolute must see. Let us explain… Beck’s alt-indie style has always been slightly leftfield, his avant-garde take on popular music a stark reminder still that Mr Hansen is just that little bit different to the normal album-tour-TV performance artists out there. With his last album, 2012’s Song Reader, he went one further than most people would even think about, let alone actually dare to pull off. In a time when music consumption is changing, Reader jettisoned actual recorded music altogether in favour of a sheet music release of the album’s 20 songs. These were then recorded and performed by fans and musicians around the world, but are still to be recorded by the man himself. However, he’ll be arriving in London for this very special performance in which he will perform the whole album live, and he’s roped in a load of ultraspecial guests to help him out, including Jarvis Cocker, Franz Ferdinand, Charlotte Gainsbourg, acoustic trio The Staves, the Guillemots, soul star Michael Kiwanuka, The Pictish Trail and more, alongside his specially put together house band of Seb Rochford (drums), Tom Herbert (bass), Dave Okumu (guitar), with music direction by Ed Harcourt and David Coulter. All of which makes this an extra-special one-off show that you just can’t afford to miss. Barbican

Mike Lerner

Co-director of the documentary Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer on Vladimir Putin’s Russia and punk-rock INTERVIEW alasdair morton

You’ve produced a lot of films but moved to the director’s chair (with Maxim Pozdorovkin) here. Why now? I’ve always spent a lot of my time making films about art and politics and this was a film that combines those two things in a sublime way. I grew up in a London in tune to punk-rock, so to make a film about the revival of punk for political purposes became too much to resist. Two years in penal colonies seems an impossibly severe punishment to people outside of Russia... The actual crime [they were charged with] of hooliganism goes back to the Communist days when it was the catch-all crime used for political ends, as it has [been used] here. Specifically they were charged with hooliganism with the intent to provoke religious hatred. Which was not the purpose of the performance in the Cathedral of Christ The Savior in Moscow... It certainly was not. Pussy Riot would probably say they were pro-religious but campaigning for a more democratic and less sexist church, where women can participate in rituals on the same level as men. In Jerusalem there’s a new group of women campaigning to participate in the rituals at the Western Wall and they were granted the permission to do that. So in Judaism’s case women were seen as acceptable whereas the Orthodox Church is a long way off that.

Photo: Getty

Has their message been lost? It has been deliberately confused. The cathedral performance was about demonstrating the close relationship between Putin and the Orthodox Church, lobbying for a greater involvement of women in church services, and protesting the misogynistic and sexist nature of Russian society. It is a lot for non-Russian audiences to get their heads around. And the Russian public, too, who saw them as cynical, blasphemous anarchists. Has Western involvement through people such as Madonna and Yoko Ono helped or hindered their case? It has been positive in terms of the Pussy Riot morale, to know they have international support. Has anything Madonna’s said had any effect on

Protest power: the Pussy Riot struggle continues the state? I doubt it. Has it provoked them in to being more recalcitrant? I think not as well. They tend to ignore it. Yekaterina Samutsevich was released last December. Are there any prospects for the early release of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina? I am not saying there’s no hope [but] they have already had a couple of appeals for early release turned down and for ridiculous reasons, like Nadia not participating in the prison beauty pageant – which is clearly something as a feminist she would not want to do. And for early release they’d have to admit their guilt, which they are not prepared to do. Now there’s a new law in Russia combating freedoms of expression… People are calling it ‘the Pussy Riot law’. Had it existed last year it [the state] would have had a much clearer basis for what it did. This is reality in Russia – on a weekly basis almost, new laws are published that impact on people’s freedom of speech and their right to protest. And there are a lot of anti-gay laws, too. It is a very dark period in Russian culture. Is it a step backwards? It is. No one’s saying Russia’s not a democracy, but even in democratic countries, like the UK

and US, you can have undemocratic laws passed. Freedom is a very fragile thing. This is not a situation unique to Russia... No, and that is something we would emphasise – it’s not having a pop at Russia but having a pop at leadership everywhere that seeks to bolster its popularity through suppressing expression. Are people still fighting against this repression in Russia? People are frightened off by these laws and the Pussy Riot prosecution. The opposition movement in Russia quietened down quite a bit after the mass demos last summer and winter, but they are regrouping. For Pussy Riot things are on hold until Maria and Nadezhda’s release. Then we’ll see what we do next. I’m sure they’re not about to retire. I have a theory that Maria will eventually be president of Russia. Realistically, could you see her embarking on a career in politics in the future? Yes, and I am half serious about it, too. It’s things like this that propel someone into the spotlight. The way she argued her case is very impressive and points to a potential political future. Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer is out on July 5 through Independent Films

TNT_1557_026 26

This ensemble heist thriller from director Louis Letterier (Clash Of The Titans) is a slick, glossy big-budget joyride full of twists and turns as a group of magicians embark on pulling off the biggest trick of all time. Its sleight of hand means there is less to it than meets the eye, but the fun is all in the show. J Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), his former assistant Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher), hypnotist and ‘mentalist’ Merritt (Woody Harrelson) and street hustler Jack Wilder (Dave Franco) are pulled together by an unknown individual who’s been following their careers and wants them to perform a string of grandstanding illusions, robbing banks in the process and doling out the cash to the public. Mark Ruffalo’s bungling cop is none too pleased, and enlists Morgan Freeman’s magic-skeptic to chase down the team before they pull off their final trick and disappear for good. Characterisation is left by the wayside – there is little back story to the rag-tag team of tricksters other than that which fuels the narrative, but it barely lets up. The top-drawer cast dive in – the likes of Michael Caine (the big bucks benefactor) and Morgan Freeman are always a treat to watch – and the dialogue fizzes with whip-snap one-liners, but it is the story that engages most. Beneath the directorial cunning and narrative misdirection, it is not quite as clever as it initially appears. But, like the Las Vegas-styled magic shows the team perform, the entertainment is found in the show itself, not in finding out how it is all done. And it is a starry, classy show, for sure. Good for: Brain candy that quickens the pulse if not wholly standing up to close scrutiny.

Annotated photos, personal family items and memorabilia show another side of the artist too often thought of only through her troubled star persona.

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s ever-popular novel, this outdoor stage adaptation breezes through the husbandhunting escapades of the five Bennett sisters. Who inspired you to take to the stage? A French comic called Raymond Devos. He’d talk about being on the bus and the man sitting next to him putting his hand in his (Raymond’s) pocket then getting off and forgetting to take his hand with him. His stuff was surreal but played to prime time Sixties TV audiences. Where was your first show? At the University of Reading. Four students put on our own show. It went well ‘til people started laughing. That messed me up.

Sofia Coppola’s fifth feature outing is this perfectly suited based-on-real-life tale, where a group of sleb-obsessed teens track down the homes of famous people (Paris Hilton, Rachel Bilson) and then rob ‘em. First Harry Potter, then Equus, now Daniel Radcliffe adopts an Irish accent and a hobbling gait as youth Billy on an isolated Irish island, dreaming of escape when a film crew come to town. There’s nothing politically correct about Martin McDonagh’s 1990 black comedy, but you will laugh when you know you shouldn’t. LK

Melic’s big moment is now The New Zealand rockers are set to release their debut LP An Hour To Anywhere, a record that’s been five years in the making Words alasdair morton

“We signed in the green room of the famous 100 Club on Oxford Street just hours before taking to the stage,” says Melic frontman Mark Hitchcock, recalling the moment the Kiwi funk rockers inked the deal for their debut album, An Hour To Anywhere. This marks the next step in the band’s ascent since they first started gigging on the London scene five years ago. Melic, who open TNT’s 30th birthday party at Koko this month before legend Ash Grunwald headlines, first took to the stages of the capital in 2008 and have found themselves playing iconic venues such as The Borderline and Cargo. In this time, they’ve released three independently recorded EPs, the third being last year’s Nowhere I’d Rather Be. It was a chance gig early last year, however, that put them on the path to their debut album deal. “We performed at The Garage at the end of April and the label [Beatnik Geek Records] happened to be in the audience scouting for a new act – then we got a call a few days later,” Hitchcock explains of the serendipitous meeting. Last year’s taste-whetting EP Nowhere I’d Rather Be – the standout titular lead track was a funk-fuelled love letter to their adopted GB homeland – won them new fans and delighted those who’d been addicted since first catching them live. The foursome have prided themselves on two things – their raucous live shows, and their totally-unlikeanything-else sound. Fusing the diverse talents and musical leanings of the band’s four members – funk rock bassist Steve Hitchcock, metal drummer Andrew Coogan, classically trained pianist and saxophonist Romy Bylin and their rock singer-songwriter frontman, often found in his Brian Johnson-recalling hat (see above left) – theirs is a sound that pulls from many different corners of the musical landscape to create a seamless whole. The varied influences organically unite when the four pick up their instruments together. The 13 tracks on Anywhere, the first fruits of the MelicBeatnik union, are set to take their trademark sound one step further, though. “There’s always a large range of influences apparent in our songs from the disparate musical tastes of Andrew, Steve Romy and I,” Hitchcock says of the Melic sound. “You’ll hear subtle metal drum fills – if there is such a thing – sneaking in there, Flea-like funk bass riffs, and an array of all sorts from Romy and me in and around the

sounds of Dave Matthews Band, Incubus and Pearl Jam.” “We’ve learned how to best write music together now,” he adds of the way the band have grown and evolved as a unit. “We know when something is working and similarly when to abandon a track and move on. And over the last

There’s always a large range of influences

few years we’ve been sending each other music to listen to – Andrew now has us all fascinated with British prog-rock band Porcupine Tree; Steve and I introduced the other two to singer-songwriter [Irishman] Glen Hansard, and this has helped develop our sound, bringing us together and finding where the middle ground lies.” Despite this evolution, the recording of the debut at ››

Wall of noise: Melic fuse their disparate elements into a unique whole; (below) Hitchcock on stage three separate studios across the capital – “there were some long days and some very late nights!” – proved a test for the band, its confines far from their usual habitat. “Recording is actually a bit of a mongrel,” Hitchcock says. “It’s just not a very natural thing to play to a metronome and concentrate so hard on being so precise. Whereas it’s awesome getting into a natural groove with the musicians around you on stage, with no constraints.” Melic’s live drive did spill over into this recording time in the end, despite the ‘clockwork’ routines the studio demands. “We found that no matter how rehearsed we were or how planned all the parts were, every track changed and came out slightly differently,” the frontman reveals. Anywhere is slated for an August 5 release, with the band launching it at west London’s Bush Hall on August 1, before then taking the new tunes out to the masses. After all, these guys are not ones to let anything keep them from the road. “We were performing in Christchurch [recently] and were due in Wellington the next day, but we woke up to a snowstorm – all flights cancelled,” Hitchcock recalls of a particularly fraught gig that called on all the band’s resolve.

“We hired a four-wheel drive for the five-hour road trip northbound through the snow and made our way up the coast, talking our way through road blocks to Blenheim (top of the North Island) where we squeezed into a tiny singleengine plane to cross the strait. It was pretty rock ‘n’ roll. “There were some pretty bad taste references to La Bamba [the song made famous by Ritchie Valens in 1959 before his death in the plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly] being thrown about as the plane bounced around in the turbulence, but we made it!” Surviving their brush with danger at several thousand feet

Recording is actually a bit of a mongrel

hasn’t diluted Melic’s thirst for touring. “We’ll be playing all over the UK [this summer],” Hitchcock says excitedly, with the anticipation of taking the new tracks out on tour clear to see. And seemingly unperturbed by their dalliances with rock ‘n’ roll’s aero-peril history, he adds: “And we’d love to get back out to New Zealand and Oz again, and maybe a couple of dates in Asia and the US while we’re travelling.” This summer is Melic’s moment, their hard work and fiveyear slog taking them to exactly this point now – the launch of the first long player, which you’ll be able to check out at our birthday bash at Koko on the 28th. “We’ll run through many of the songs from the album,” Hitchcock says of their plans for TNT’s 30th birthday show. “Might do a bit of a jam – we’ll see you there!” ❚ Melic play TNT’s 30th Birthday Party, headlined by Ash Grunwald, June 28. SURPRISE CRUISE “How does a week away sound?” says my dad. “Seven nights exploring a few cities in Europe, as much food and drink as you can consume. Balcony rooms – all with sea views.” I let this sink in for a minute as the cheer of a free holiday starts to spread into a grin. Before I get chance to reply, he’s walking off rather briskly down the hall, half turning to mutter over his shoulder. “Yes, I think we’ll all enjoy a cruise and a holiday with the grandkids.” Stunned silence as the grin slips into a grimace. There are two things about that, really: holiday with the kids – surely that’s an oxymoron? And cruise? I’m 33. Unequivocally that’s 32 years too young. I pace off to the kitchen to take him up on the small print. The salient points: the “room” is actually a cabin, the “sea view” is something of a permanent fixture and the chance to spend time together is more a hostage situation in an escape-proof space. “You’ve already booked it, haven’t you?” “I have,” he says, devoid of all remorse. Seven nights aboard the high seas, enforced jollity and deck quoits competitions. War heroes and sequined grannies cutting a foxtrot while Jane McDonald bangs out show tunes. “We’re leaving July... next year.” Maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s all glamour and cocktails by the pool, plush cabins and champagne sunsets on the balcony. Either way, I’ve got 378 days to think about it. Read more at: my.tntmagazine.com/blogs

MONTHLY SPOTLIGHT on working abroad

Attention, please: Thai kids are eager to learn

Must Thai harder Thailand needs teachers and creatives, offering cheap living, enjoyable chaos and exotic entertainment in return Words caroline garnar Whether you’ve holidayed in Thailand and fallen in love with the place and the people, or you’re a teacher looking for students who actually want to learn for a change, the education and creative industries in Bangkok and beyond are beckoning...

Why Thailand? “Bangkok has all the cosmopolitan upsides of any other global city, but there’s a uniquely Asian chaos about it, balanced just enough by Western attitudes,” says Aussie Tom Sturrock, who has lived in Bangkok for nearly a year and describes himself as a “journalist, editor, bon vivant and vagabond”. “Maybe you get that in Hong Kong as well, but Bangkok is cheaper, rowdier and more fun.” 34

TNT_1557_034 34

Having previously lived in the UK for four years, he felt the lure of BKK after losing a job in Sydney. “In hindsight, I’m surprised I didn’t wind up here sooner,” he confesses. Gabrielle Doman, a 29-year-old British freelance writer and soon-to-be personal trainer, moved to Thailand two-and-a-half years ago: ”The best bits about Thailand are the weather, the fact it is so cheap, there are exotic beaches only a few hours away, the food and – despite it being a cliché – Thai people are extremely friendly on the whole.” Both expats agree that learning to speak a bit of Thai will help you get by more easily (especially if you plan to teach English!), while Sturrock adds it will help you “charm respectable

Thai women”. On a similar note, sort of, Doman warns this is not the place for Western women to look for love: “Western men date Thai women and Thai men date Thai women,” she laments. The traffic and crowds are other downsides to bear in mind.

Where to work? James Jenkin, academic director at i-to-i TEFL (onlinetefl.com) tells us about 80 per cent of the jobs they post in Thailand involve teaching children. The education industry in Thailand is huge and still growing. With English a compulsory subject, the demand for English-speakers to teach in its schools is extremely high. Teaching can help you experience Thailand on a more meaningful level,

Wimbledon is one of those places that is close enough to central London to offer a stressfree commute, but far away enough for the hustle and bustle to feel a million miles away. It’s a more laid-back way of life, with strolls across the Common, relaxed pub lunches and leisure pursuits (tennis in particular, naturally) occupying most of the residents’ time. It’s pretty self-contained too, so you will find most things, including pubs, clubs and restaurants, not far from your doorstep.

Not run of the mill: a slice of country life in London It’s not all dinner parties and baby strollers, however, with data from spareroom.co.uk showing that SW19 is the 10th most popular district in London for renters. Perhaps because the average monthly room rent is currently £607 per month including bills, which is £45 below the London average. The most sought-after properties, Ashmore says, are the period terraces, particularly in areas off Wimbledon Broadway, such as Ministers and South Park Gardens, although there are some new-build options.

The connections The District line Tube and National Rail connections enable easy access to central London, while there is a tram link to

Besides the Wombles (for whom we should thank for the cleanliness of the Common), the area is hugely popular with young professionals who have ‘done’ London and feel like they are ready for a quieter life, but still need to get to their city jobs with ease. “Many young professionals look to buy their first home here, knowing their commute will be stress-free,” explains Annaliese Ashmore, branch manager at Wimbledon haart. “As the young professionals turn into parents, many find they stay in SW19, but maybe up-size or move closer to the schools.”

Pretty in pink: Tom Overend’s boudoir

PRANK SEES MATES TURN BEDROOM PINK AUSTRALIA

Once upon a time, a man returned home to Melbourne after travelling far, far away to find his bedroom had been transformed into a fairyland castle. Tom Overend’s flatmates pulled the prank while he was away for two months by giving the bedroom a make over with pink paint and fairy lights. Set and costume designer Marc McIntyre was behind the stunt, which took nine hours to complete. He said: “We decided the enchanted fairy castle theme would be nice and emasculating for Tom.” Overend said: “People have said that my roommates have too much time. I think, if anything, that this is evidence that they’re clearly trying to fill it in.” However, Overend hasn’t changed the room back. TWEETS OF THE WEEK @lucethoughts Somewhere, Tony Abbott is sitting in a darkened room, slowly stroking a Persian cat @frankieboyle Well, that statement from Osborne was very disappointing. G’DAY 999? MY HOOKER’S A BUSHPIG UNITED KINGDOM

A man in the West Midlands has been given a police warning after he phoned the police to complain that a prostitute he’d hired wasn’t attractive enough. The man dialled 999 after meeting the woman in a hotel car park, saying he “wished to report her for breaching 40

During the call, the man told an emergency call centre: “I’ve arranged a meeting with her, but beforehand I’ve asked her for an honest description, otherwise when I get there I’m not going to use her services. “Basically she has misdescribed herself, misrepresented herself totally. “She was angry because she obviously thinks I owe her a living or something.” Sgt Jerome Moran of Birmingham police called the unidentified man back: “I told him that she’d not committed any offences and that it was his actions, in soliciting for sex, that were in fact illegal.” The man was sent a letter as a warning about his actions. The force said: “Wasting police time is a serious offence and carries a maximum sentence of six months’ jail.”

WHAT A LOAD OF BOLLARDS. I’M STUCK! UNITED KINGDOM

Police and bystanders were left perplexed when a young man managed to get his head and torso stuck in a bollard in London. What started out as a gag turned to acute embarrassment when the man became unable to dislodge himself. Footage taken on a mobile by John Waterman shows a police officer as well as the man’s friends tried to free him, which took two hours. “The officer found it very amusing and was chuckling. It was one of his more lighthearted call outs.” Newsworthy? Not particularly. Amusing? Definitely.

A huge-headed, duck-footed mix of beagle, boxer and basset hound has been crowned the winner at the 25th annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest. Walle (WAHL-ee), a four-year-old mutt from Chico, California, who was entered at the last minute, was judged as the most unsightly of 30 dogs, scooping £980. “This dog looked like he’s been photoshopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals,” judge Brian Sobel said. Owner Tammie Barbee got the dog when he was three months old. “People come up to me and say that dog is not right,” she said, “but I love him.”

No, the Newtown Dingoes isn’t the name of a local gang, it’s the rise of the urbanised dingo – even in Sydney. Last week, figures showed more than 580 purebred and 500 cross-breeds were registered as pets last year. Desiree Hemberger, from Newtown, came out in support of the, er, cute and cuddly creatures, saying she owns three of the animals – called, charmingly, Gerda, Bear and Persephone. “They are really affectionate, always wanting to sit on your lap, sleep near

Over and out: Gillard’s time as PM is toast. Reckon people will be any nicer to her now?

She’s a lady, and we all know boys will be boys

Photos: Getty

But politicians need to start acting like men now that she’s gone The abrupt exit of Julia Gillard from the PM’s position after a do-or-die leadership vote last week leaves me dwelling more on the personal than the political when reflecting on her short reign – appropriate, really, as that’s what most people did during it, too. The rights and wrongs of policies have never generated the juiciest headlines about Gillard; rather, it’s been the torrent of personal abuse hurled her way by grown men who ought to know better. A silly schoolkid flinging a sandwich at Jules’s head is one thing; adults in high-profile public roles saying unnecessarily vile things for all to hear is quite another. In only the past few weeks there has been the thoroughly puerile ‘small breasts, huge thighs and a big red box’ mock menu furore, plus radio presenter Howard Sattler going audaciously off-topic during an interview with the former PM, asking whether her partner Tim Mathieson is gay based on the fact he’s a hairdresser. Credit to Jules, she kept her cool. “I don’t think in life one can actually look at a whole profession full of different human beings and say, ‘Gee, we know something about every one of those human beings’,” she rather sensibly responded. Other vulgar examples include 2GB’s Alan Jones saying Gillard’s father “died of shame” at a gathering of Liberal Party members and Tony Abbott being photographed in front of a ‘ditch the witch’ placard. Of course, Gillard’s adversaries are free to tear into her policies and leadership all they like. But this relentless pattern of attacking her as a person as opposed to a politician has me asking more questions about the suitability of her enemies to professionally lead a country than the vilified Gillard herself. That’s irrelevant now she’s been ousted. The best we can hope for, then, is that the boys can stop squabbling in the playground now there’s no girl’s pigtails to pull and crack on with the business they’re paid to run. » Agree or disagree? Were personal attacks on Gillard unfair? letters@tntmagazine.com

BRITS KICK OUT BOAT RACE AUSSIE If there’s a single member of the general public who thinks the decision to deport Aussie Boat Race protester Trenton Oldfield for his ‘crime’, just as his British wife is about to give birth, is a reasonable one, I’d be extremely surprised. I’d also contrive some way to deal them a sharp kick to the shin for being an irrefutable idiot. Oldfield has already served a six-month jail term for disrupting the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race in 2012 after he jumped into the river with the boats. I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that in itself was a bit harsh. But having his

application for a spousal visa refused on the grounds his continued presence in Britain would not be “conducive to the public good” is at best an overreaction; bring his wife and unborn child into the equation and it becomes vindictive and cruel. Can this decision stand up to scrutiny? Knowing UKBA as we do, quite possibly. TNTMAGAZINE.COM

Thank roo and goodbye! Last week, the day after she was photographed knitting a kangaroo, Julia Gillard’s party ousted her as leader. Here, TNT sends her off in style with her top five memorable moments WORDS CAROL DRIVER

In 2010, Julia Gillard ousted Kevin Rudd as Labor leader to become Australia’s first woman prime minister. Last week, he got his revenge – this time ousting her. She’d thrown open her job to a leadership ballot in response to decreasing poll ratings, just a few months before a general election (and the a day after photos were released of her knitting a kangaroo, see P45). It was, for Gillard, to prove a foolish move. She lost by 57 votes to 45, putting an end to her three-year reign. The former leader, who arrived in Australia from Wales with her parents as a five-year-old, is expected to leave politics. With tears in her eyes, in her outgoing speech Gillard talked about what being PM might mean for other female leaders: “What I am absolutely confident of is it will be easier for the next woman and the woman after that and the woman after that and I’m proud of that.” Here, we give her a TNT send-off, recounting her best and worst bits.

WIN: Gillard the feminist icon It’ll be the speech Gillard will be remembered for. Her ratings soared, and she won approval in media around the globe, after calling conservative opponent Tony Abbott a “sexist and misogynist”. The YouTube video of her 15-minute fiery tirade last October has been viewed nearly 2.4million times. She accused Abbott of double standards after he criticised her for standing by then parliament speaker Peter Slipper in the wake of sexist text messages. “I will not be lectured about sexism and misogyny by this man,” she said. “The leader of the opposition says people who hold sexist views and who are misogynists are not appropriate for high office. Well I hope ... he is writing out his resignation. Because if he wants to know what misogyny looks like in modern Australia, he doesn’t need a motion in the House of Representatives, he needs a mirror. That’s what 44

TNT_1557_044 44

he needs.” Cue huge praise for Gillard, and the redefining of the word misogynist in the dictionary.

FAIL: ‘Read my lips: no carbon tax’ After Gillard was elected as leader by her party in 2010, she uttered the immortal words: “There will be no carbon tax under the government I lead.” Just to back this up, a few days later she reiterated, for those who weren’t listening carefully the first time: “I rule out a carbon tax.” So it was no surprise many Aussies were left pissed off when, not even a year later, Gillard announced, yes, you’ve got it, a carbon tax. Well, a carbon pricing mechanism to be exact, leading to anti-government protests including chanting of “ditch the bitch” and placards reading, “Ju-Liar”, which made global headlines. Abbott wrote on his website a year later: “The passage of time does not diminish the seriousness of her actions or restore the broken trust with the Australian people.” Seems he was right.

FAIL: Those Cinderella moments What is it with Gillard and shoes? The first time she lost a pump was on Australia Day in 2012, as she was dragged to safety by her bodyguards in Canberra after being surrounded by angry Aboriginal protesters. The blue Midas shoe was kept hostage as a symbol of a move to “give us back our country” by the campaigners, pissed off with Abbott who’d said it was time the nearby Aboriginal Tent Embassy (campaigning for indigenous rights) “moved on”. Weeks later, she had another Cinderella moment, losing her shoe on stage at Sydney’s Custom House in front of a huge audience. She grabbed world headlines again in October 2012, when she fully stacked it during a visit to India. She laughed it off by saying men didn’t have to cope with walking in heels on grass. In

Let’s face it, it sealed her fate. No one wants to see their prime minister smiling unnervingly, sitting in a chair knitting a kangaroo as their country’s economy edges towards a cliff. Gillard was also photographed by Australian Women’s Weekly not only in action making the gift for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first-born, but also, weirdly hugging colourful balls of wool to her stomach, like it was a baby. To boot, it materialised that it was actually the ex-PM’s idea for the photoshoot. Fairfax Media wrote scathingly: “Isn’t crafting, in all its forms, the hobby of the 1950s housewife? Knitting is something nannas do, right? Therefore it must be lame? I mean, it’s not as if she’s achieving anything...” Frontbencher Christopher Pyne said: “What it shows is that we know the prime minister is good at spinning a yarn and now we have the photographic proof of it.”

For more than 18 weeks, TNT has been campaigning with your help against the UK Border Agency. We’ve revealed horror stories, gained press coverage in the UK and Australia, and attracted support from high-profile MPs. To read our coverage so far, visit tntmagazine.com/ukba. Fourteen weeks ago it was announced the UK Border Agency will be split into two organisations – one dealing with visas. In true shambolic style, a name for the office, and how it’s going to work, is yet to be decided. So far, all that’s clear is that it’s going to be the same staff, reporting to the same bosses, in the same building, operating within the same budgets. Therefore, our demands for this new entity remain the same. Add your voice to TNT Magazine’s UKBA Balls-Up campaign to demand the new office changes its policies so that:

✔ Every applicant receives correspondence when an application has been received ✔ Advice is then sent to all applicants detailing the process system and what it means for those wanting to work or travel ✔ Every applicant gets access to an emergency helpline which they can call for updates at any time, not only after six months ✔ The target for processing visas for those based in the UK who are eligible to work is reduced to three months ✔ A full refund is offered to applicants if their application takes longer than the target time if it is due to UKBA incompetency ✔ The amount of premium service appointments is increased – and a full refund is offered to applicants if the UKBA doesn’t adhere to the allotted 24-hour timescale ✔ Applicants wishing to extend visas to stay in the UK can do so before the ‘28 days before expiry’ deadline Add your name to our government epetition. After years of Liberal-National PM John Howard refusing to apologise for the Stolen Children debacle, Gillard stepped up to the plate. Earlier this year, she issued a historic national apology to victims who were forced to give up their babies during late the 1950s to the 1970s. Hundreds of families gathered to hear the speech, hailed as one of the “more beautiful and principled given by a PM in Australia” by the Guardian. Gillard said to the unmarried mothers who were coerced or deceived into giving up their children to adoption by married couples: “To you, the mothers who were betrayed by a system that gave you no choice and subjected you to manipulation, mistreatment and malpractice, we apologise.”

Australia’s four-day tour match at the Worcester County Ground from Tuesday should be a chance to iron out cobwebs and acclimatise ahead of the first Ashes Test on July 10, but it’s set to be an all-out shoot-out for the upfor-grabs top order positions. Assuming Michael Clarke and Shane Watson are fit, and vice-captain Brad Haddin slots in at number six ahead of whichever bowlers have all working parts, there’s a maximum of three spots for five in the squad. On form, 35-year-old Middlesex skipper Chris Rogers should be the first opener picked, leaving shaky incumbent Ed Cowan and Phil Hughes, Usman Khawaja and David Warner (who won’t have played any lead-up matches due to suspension) to fill two places. None of them have knocked down the door for inclusion – barely rung the door bell – so they’ll be keen to impress newly appointed coach Darren Lehmann. Meanwhile, England has put confidence in Joe Root to open with Alastair Cook by dropping Nick Compton from the squad.

Warrington Wolves hooker Michael Monaghan told TNT recently that his side were winding up for a big Super League finish and were close to racking up some massive scores, and it was no gee up. In recent weeks they’ve walloped St Helens (48-22), Salford City (68-10) and the Broncos (82-10). Then they showed they could do the job against competition big guns with a huge, much tighter win over leaders Wigan (22-12) starring Michael’s brother Joel (pictured). They played Bradford at the weekend and are in striking distance to take second place from Huddersfield when they meet Leeds this Friday at 8pm (watch it on Sky Sports 1).

UNTIL JULY 21, ITV (DAILY HIGHLIGHTS, 7PM) Le Tour 2013 has begun winding its way through Corsica, so chosen to mark the great race’s 100th year as it’s the only part of France it hasn’t been. It leaves the island after today’s 145km stage three from Ajaccio to Calvi, a tricky course that while it only has two categorised ascents will test the peleton with five climbs throughout the day. Chris Froome and his Team Sky minions will likely make their first major impression

when the Tour hits the mainland on Tuesday for a team time trial in Nice. The fourth stage is a short 25km, but plenty to give the Brits a sight of their first yellow jersey. The other key stage this week comes when the lycra-clad crusaders arrive on the Pyrenees after two days of undulating bitumen in the Massif Central. Stage eight on Saturday will separate the contenders from the pretenders over 194km from Castres to the Ax 3 Domaines ski resort. The steep Col de Pailheres will split up the pack before the likes of Froome and Alberto Contador hit the summit finish.

Relentless Ricky To the end, the former Aussie skipper vows to fight hard for runs and wins. He knows no other way… WORDS MICHAEL GADD

The batsman of his generation for many, Ricky Ponting could be excused for relaxing his relentless intensity and assuming the miles in his legs and thousands of runs on the board will allow him to coast through the final months of his ridiculously impressive career, but of course that’s a load of rubbish. Just like in an Ashes series whitewash or one of his World Cup wins, he tells TNT his hunger to win hasn’t waned. It’s great news for Surrey, who have him among their number until the end of the month for a string of Friends Life T20 and County Championship games in London. “It’s every team I play for mate, it’s not about enjoying games, it’s about winning games, and I’ll do whatever it takes to give Surrey the best chance of winning in every game that I play in,” he tells us ahead of six T20 games in four weeks (five at the Oval, one at Lord’s) and his final Championship game against Nottinghamshire (July 8). “I was lucky enough to get a few runs first up (he debuted in Derby with 192) and we got ourselves into a position where we potentially could have won the game … I just want to keep contributing every time I step onto the field.” It shouldn’t be a surprise, but for a bloke who will retire from all forms of cricket in October after the T20 Champions League in India, he sounds like a kid pushing for his first Test. After giving up the five-dayers last year, pressure seems to have lifted from his 38-year-old shoulders and it’s shown on the field, winning the Sheffield Shield with his beloved Tasmania and picking up the competition’s best player award along the way. He also took over as Mumbai Indians’ captain and led them to victory in the Indian Premier League. Even before he rocked up in the UK to fill in short-term for South African skipper Graeme Smith, his presence brought excitement. England’s public enemy number one was welcomed with open arms, with players all singing his praises as not just a great player, but mentor. “It’s not just with the bat but his knowledge, we’re very blessed at the 50

moment,” Surrey captain Gareth Batty said of Ponting, who was offered the leadership role but turned it down. His cool head has been welcome anyway, as Surrey’s coach and team director were sacked, replaced in the interim by former Test player Alec Stewart. Ponting says he’s been humbled by the response of fans and players. “I guess [it’s] just being around an Ashes year,” he says. “Being an exAustralian captain and an Ashes series being on makes it a

It’s not about enjoying, it’s about winning

bit more of a thing, me being here. It’s just exciting to be in the country with an Ashes about to start. At the same time I’m excited at the opportunity with Surrey.” With his retirement, Ponting’s last game on home turf will have been at Bellerive Oval. Among his last in England will be the Oval, a ground he’d like to have some more pleasant memories of: ”Usually when I’ve been there it’s been watching the opposition captain going up to collect the Ashes, so it’d be nice to have a better experience here.” As soon as he was scoring runs on UK soil came talk of a heroic return to the Australian fold – he said no way, but his announcement that “it just feels like the right time to finish playing” nipped it in the bud. Still, after 168 Tests and 13,378 runs, the 42nd captain still has the team at heart. He also admits there will be itchy feet when the first ball is bowled at Trent Bridge on July 10. “I will have itchy feet, of course I will,” he laughs. “It’s the Ashes. But I’ll be sitting back watching the next generation of Australian players hopefully playing well enough to win a series.”

Legends: with new Aussie coach Darren Lehmann

Intense: finding a gap for Surrey; (left) taking a catch at second slip

Before Mickey Arthur was axed as Aussie coach following Australia’s poor ICC Champions Trophy, Ponting says the South African had “reached out” to him. Now his mate Darren Lehmann is at the helm, Ponting will of course remain open to lend his experience to whoever wants it. “At the end of the day I’m around the UK for the next couple of months and everyone knows they can get me if they need me,” he says. “I want to do whatever I can to help the team and any of the individual players. I still feel I owe that to Australian cricket and I owe that to the boys in the team.” Given even the shrewdest of his critics can’t place Ponting any lower than second behind Donald Bradman on a list of greatest ever Aussie batsmen, he could argue he doesn’t owe anything: “The reason I kept on playing as long as I did was to try and help those younger guys through the most difficult time of their careers, which is, you know, the first 15-20 Test matches you play,” he tells us. “I did whatever I could to stay around, but at the end of the day I wasn’t playing well enough to be in the team. So now that I’m not in the team, any advice I can give I’m more than happy to.” The end of Ponting’s career now gives him a chance to have a proper crack at the short form of the game he neglected in favour of his “pinnacle”, Test cricket. It’s a minor ‘could’ve been’ for the dynamic, flamboyant and inventive ball striker. ”When I’ve played Twenty20 Cricket in the past it’s just been a one-off game here and there,” he says. “But with the Big Bash I got to play consecutive games (for Hobart Hurricanes) and I got a chance in the IPL this year as well.” His final months will be spent with the Antigua Hawks in the inaugural Caribbean Premier League before joining his Mumbai teammates in India for the final fling. It’s no hit and giggle global lap of honour for Ponting though, he’s still staring down new challenges – focused as ever. His steely stare remains: “Surrey, and helping them get some big results, is my number one priority right now.”

COMMENT: MICHAEL GADD michael.gadd@tntmagazine.com

New regime: Michael Clarke and Darren ‘Boof’ Lehmann, the new Aussie coach

Cool uncle Boof’s straight bat just what Aussies need Old school Darren Lehmann the right fit after Mr Mickey Arthur

» Agree or disagree? Is Boof the right man for the job? letters@tntmagazine.com 52

Jamie Soward and the London Broncos may not be a match made in heaven – that’s Meantime Pale and McCoy’s salt and vinegar – but it’s a good one. Soward arrived in London last week to play out the Super League season with the Broncos because it became apparent he wouldn’t be getting a run with St George before his 2014 move to Penrith Panthers. The timing’s uncanny, as Tony Rea’s men just lost their leader Craig Gower and are at the bottom of the table – they’re still in the Challenge Cup, though. Soward may have been out of favour with the Dragons, but a State of Origin

He needs his mojo, Broncos need him

half-back doesn’t forget how to put his boots on, steer a team around the park and kick on the fourth or fifth. The Broncos faithful deserve something good out of the season, as does Soward the chance to find his mojo. He could call this a sunny holiday, minus the sun and with massive blokes trying to smash him.

Critics were off the mark saying Mickey Arthur was like a school principal when he axed four players in India’s homework-gate – he was more the substitute teacher who lost control of the class and didn’t have the chops to get it back. You can imagine his replacement Darren Lehmann would shut ‘em up with an “oi!” or a cool story from back in the day. Boof, as he’s known, has been there and done enough to earn instant respect – he’s the cool uncle to Arthur’s tweed jacket and elbow patches. Arthur was appointed the first foreign coach of the Australian cricket team because when South Africa went to the top of the class, he had the chalk in his hand. His Proteas beat Australia for the first time in a Test series (2-1) in 2008 and cherried that 4-1 in an ODI series. They went nine series in a row without defeat. The guy can teach the test. Sadly for him, it may be a case of right man, wrong job. Lehmann is proven as a coach for Queensland and was in the mix as the next Aussie coach long before the team flopped in the UK this month. But for the national team his manner and history, including association with the greatest team ever, will be more vital to this job – a mission improbable in the short term but with promise. Australia with Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey retired have no one who can have a quiet word in a boorish youngster’s ear and be listened to. In the absence of such experience, the young side needs a Boof to guide them. Ice baths and computer analysis are great, but old school. Lehmann is all about playing games, getting into the nets and keeping the important upstairs bit happy and clear. The Australians aren’t dunces by any means. Before the 4-0 whitewash and the winless Champions Trophy had Arthur writing lines on the plane home, Australia played South Africa in Perth to be the world’s number one-ranked Test team. They can play. But instead of being lectured and given homework, maybe they need the tough love Lehmann can bring – he has the aura that makes him a mate, mentor and disciplinarian, but good luck knowing which is which.

BE A TRAVEL VIP Ever feel like trying to arrange your holiday is like a long, painful lesson in budget economics? First the hours spent wondering if a 16-hour stopover in Frankfurt is worth it to save £40 on flights. Then there’s the row with your travel buddies over whether hostel breakfasts are shit – before you get bullied into booking somewhere offering ‘unlimited toast!’

Let’s not forget the search for a ‘nice’ place to eat each night, either. Which means looking at endless laminated menus outside, pretending you’re checking the dishes rather than the prices before muttering: “I’m not bloody paying €17 for a glorified cheese toastie, just because it’s called a Croque Monsieur.” Ah, the joys of travel. Can’t rescue you from any of that I’m afraid. But totally can help out with a massive bunch of other travel savings. We’ve just launched a VIP club to celebrate our upcoming 30th birthday. It’s £50 to join, and along with all the various goodies and discounts that go along with it (see P6 for more details) there are a stack of exclusive travel offers, which will be worth more than £500 over a year. Just to give you a taster, our mates at Trek America are offering 15 per cent off their ‘Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon’ tour, which features a night at a cowboy camp and a stay in a traditional Navajo ‘Hogan’ mud hut. And Busabout are lopping 20 per cent off their (already hella cheap) Hop On Hop Off passes for the rest of the year. So all these savings should leave you with a bit of spare cash to spend living it up on your adventures. Oh, and for the record – that night on the floor of Frankfurt airport? What, are you crazy? It’s no way worth it! tntmagazine.com/mytnt-vip

Hey y’all, why dontcha grab those rhinestone-studded boots, tip your hat and get ready to drawl something in your best Southern twang 19-21 about this not being your first rodeo? No-one will get pissed off, as you’ll be at a safe distance from the US, celebrating all things American in Gateshead at the festival described as the ‘gumbo of American roots music.’ JULY

WHY: The festival is primarily devoted to traditional music from across the water, so expect plenty of folk, blues, classic country, Nashville gospel and more. Martha Wainwright is headlining, and The McCrary Sisters, the Heritage Blues Orchestra and Mud Morganfield are also playing.

What do you mean you haven’t bought your tickets 18-21 yet? The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Queens Of The Stone Age, Bastille, Primal Scream and Dizzee Rascal will be playing at this hardpartying weekend bash. JULY

mobiles on planes

At long last, an end is in sight to the annoying and (come on, we all know it) completely irrational restrictions on using electronic gadgets after planes have landed. British Airways passengers will be allowed to use their mobile phones and gadgets as soon as the aircraft touches down and cabin crew have made an announcement to give the all-clear. Admittedly, everyone does this anyway, but at least you won’t have to be surreptitious about it anymore. The move also follows a draft report by The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which recommended the easing of restrictions on the use of electronic gadgets on flights.

Pakistan killings

A disturbing new survey has come out which says that one in 10 British women are sexually harassed or assaulted while on holiday. The majority of attacks recorded happened in Majorca and Crete, according to results published in the journal Archives Of Sexual Behaviour, from research led by Dr Amador Calafat, of the European Insitute of Studies on Prevention. The poll of 6000 tourists in various airports in Mediterranean countries also found that one in 15 men said they were victims of sexual harassment.

One of TNT’s fave tour operators, Contiki, is holding a huge London-based competition for you to win trips abroad, travel vouchers and other great prizes. The Great Contiki Challenge (contiki.com/contikichallenge13) takes place on July 13 and is essentially a giant scavenger hunt that will take you around London’s most famous, quirky and secretive sights. All you have to do is turn up at 11.30am in Russell Square, armed with a team of two to eight people and a camera. All will be revealed about how you can win points to nab those prizes.

Pakistan’s authorities have suspended all expeditions on its second-highest peak Nanga Parbat, after 10 tourists were shot dead by Taliban gunmen last week. “We are really shocked, traumatised and full of anger,” said Manzoor Hussain, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. “Pakistan is known among the mountaineering community. It was a brutal massacre. These people were killed for no reason.” Until the attack, the region had been considered safe from the violence that has affected other parts of the country.

UKTRIP

The beat goes on There’s more to legendary rock ’n’ roll producer Liverpool’s music scene than just The Beatles

Photos: Getty, Thinkstock, cream.co.uk;

WORDS KELLY GRIFFIN

“Girl, you really got me going…” I hear two young buskers bellow out a cover of The Kinks classic across Liverpool’s bustling city centre. A ska-punk six-piece strikes up a song on my left, while a little further down on my right another, with just his guitar in hand, is belting out the chorus to The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. The atmosphere is electric, and it’s just your average Saturday mid-morning. Liverpool is one of the world’s most renowned music cities, home of The Beatles, Elvis Costello, Echo and The Bunnymen, Ladytron, The Wombats … the list goes on. In the past few years, this Merseyside city has scooped up a whole heap of accolades – named everything from ‘UK’s Friendliest Destination’ to ‘Britain’s Best Nightlife Destination’, and has been named the World City of Pop by the Guinness Book of Records, for producing more number-one hit singles than any other city. I’m here to find out if it really lives up to such a buzzing reputation. No visit to Liverpool would be complete without paying one’s respects to The Fab Four, so my first stop is The Beatles Story. Inside, I’m taken on a journey through the history of the world’s most famous band. There are photos and installations from The Beatles’ early years, including them cutting their teeth at local live venue The Cavern Club through to their solo projects. The exhibition includes all sorts of cool original artefacts, too, including a pair of John Lennon’s glasses, guitars and an “unfeasibly rare” copy of The White Album on blue vinyl. The audio guide is narrated by John Lennon’s sister, Julia, “which gives the visitor’s journey a real authenticity,” as Beatles Story representative Martin King tells me. Martin is full of praise for Liverpool, not only as an amazing city for a music fan to live in, but also as a place to visit, especially for Beatles fans eager to see the legendary places in which the band performed, or referenced in their songs. “They can visit us, Penny Lane, Strawberry Field, The Cavern Club, The Casbah,” he says. “We’re also home to Liverpool Sound City and the city’s annual International Festival of Psychedelia, which attracts people from all over...” As much as I love exploring Liverpool’s Beatlemania past (and I’ll admit I’m slightly tempted to catch The Beatles cover band playing at The Cavern Club tonight), I’m also keen to experience the city’s current music scene.

I meet scene stalwart Paul Fleming, the man behind post-punk outfit Baltic Fleet and former keyboard player for Echo And The Bunnymen. “Growing up around Merseyside as a musician, there’s a lot to live up to and there can be pressure,” he says. “I came from a musical family, with my dad being part of [influential Sixties band] The Merseybeats. I’m proud to be associated with everything that’s happened.” I ask Paul to give me some insider tips on where to catch the best live music these days. “The best live venues are the Kazimer and The Camp and Furnace Blade Factory. Leaf is also great and there’s the new

Two young buskers bellow out The Kinks

East Village Arts Club. You’ll catch a lot of up-and-coming acts as well as more established artists,” he tells me, adding, ”The live scene is really vibrant right now.” I spend the rest of my Saturday night on a musical pilgrimage of sorts, pub-hopping from the grungy The Zanzibar Club (Noel Gallagher, The Zutons and The Coral have all graced the stage here) to the experimental music and theatre venue Kazimer. I walk down Mathew Street, where The Cavern Club stands, and past the legendary Nation, home of dance superclub Cream, which is credited with raising the bar for clubbing in the Nineties. Then it’s on to some other late night spots I only have a hazy recollection of... Though I didn’t discover the next big thing during my weekend here, I sure as hell had a brilliant night out – Liverpool definitely manages to live up to it’s Sleeping outdoors: musical hype.

IN THE SHADOW OF ST NAZAIRE Joanne Barry, Australia

VENICE Christine Tudehope, Australia

WHY IT WORKS “How can you not love France?” Joanne enthuses. It’s hard to argue, when sights like this cathedral (St Nazaire) presiding over the river pop up in random towns. In Joanne’s case, it was in Béziers, Languedoc, which she happened upon while exploring Lagos to Nice by train. “I found myself in this quaint little town, bordered on three sides by the Orb river and a canal, with beautiful houses, churches and bridges,” she says. No wonder Joanna “takes my camera everywhere”.

WHY IT WORKS It’s a challenge to find a bad view from any of the bridges of Venice, but Christine found an especially striking one here, with the gold of the mask in unison with the lights on the edges of the canal during Carnival. “It was taken on the famous Ponte de Rialto,” Christine tells us. “It was a cool night and everyone was wearing their Carnival mask and enjoying life. It’s an amazing feeling to hide your identity for the day. Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.”

St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall

Shape-shifting islands, only accessible at certain times of the day or night might sound like a tagline for James Cameron’s latest sci-fi movie. But the world of tidal islands is a real, albeit mysterious, phenomenon. The UK is home to 43 of these surreal places, which are not considered part of the mainland, nor are they strictly islands. Connected to the shore by natural or man-made causeways, they are only accessible at low tide, meaning visitors have to stick to strict timetables to find them (and avoid being stranded on them). The isolation of these seaside sanctuaries means many of them remain natural havens of flora and fauna, largely untouched by the heavy hand of industry and tourism. Their remoteness also lends them an air of mystery and enshrines their place in local folklore. St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall definitely has a fairytale appearance – in fact it looks a lot like The Hobbit homeland The Shire. St Michael’s Mount rises out of the sea, enveloped 62 00

in green vegetation and with a medieval castle perched atop. The craggy island stands just 400 yards off the coast of Cornwall, but it is believed the Mount used to be five or six miles from the sea and was once enclosed in a thick hazel wood. Something of a multipurpose venue, the Mount’s 12th-century buildings have served as a priory, a fortress, a place of pilgrimage and finally a private home for the St Aubyn family since the 17th century. The seafront cottages on this tiny island are still home to more than 30 islanders, whose jobs range from boatman to guide. Should you get bored of exploring the castle’s nooks and crannies you can admire the gardeners who have to abseil the steep granite cliffs to tend to the island’s subtropical plants. Make sure you check out the island’s tidal timetable online to find out when it is accessible on foot. stmichaelsmount.co.uk

Mersea, Essex

Mersea Island is definitely not a place you’d want to get stranded – the ghost of a Roman centurion is said to suddenly appear in car headlights when visitors are driving back across the connecting causeway. But don’t let that put you off. The island is famous for its native oysters (which you can try at The Company Shed restaurant), open grasslands and the wild beaches of Cudmore Grove Country Park. visitessex.com

Llanddwyn, wales

Named after the Welsh patron saint of lovers, Dwynwen, Llanddwyn means “The church of St Dwynwen”. Local folklore says the saint retreated to the island to live life as a hermit, after being unlucky in romance. Pilgrimages were made to her holy well located near the church, the ruins of which can still be seen today. Visitors can also see the island’s lighthouse, rolling dunes, sheep, wild ponies, mudflats and salt marshes, as well as views of Snowdonia. anglesey-history.co.uk

3

Burgh, devon

Unpretentious style

Home to just five buildings, the island of Burgh is dominated by the eponymous art deco hotel, built in the Twenties. The isolated setting inspired writer Agatha Christie, who used it as a backdrop for two of her detective novels. Those arriving at high tide can hitch a lift to and from the hotel on the local sea tractor. If the thought of heading out on this seafaring contraption worries you, have a tipple first at the island’s 14th-century local, The Pilchard Inn. burghisland.com

5

erraid, Scotland

If the name Erraid alone doesn’t conjure up images of an otherworldly isle, the small spiritual commune that lives here will. Part of the Findhorn Foundation, the Erraid Community invite guests to join them for a week or more to join in group meditations, festivals and help with island jobs. Don’t fancy the spiritual side? You can use a two-bedroom cottage as a personal retreat, and spend your days cruising to the nearby isles of Staffa and Treshnish to visit the puffins instead.

Hotel de nell Overview Now, understated elegance isn’t too difficult to achieve. Unpretentious grandeur, however, is a tough trick, yet one Hotel De Nell in Paris pulls off with aplomb. Esteemed French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte marries traditional French luxury with Oriental minimalism, and makes it work. Guests are received with a welcome pastry (how very French) before being shown their digs by warm and smiling staff. The hotel also has a trendy bar and restaurant, though there are plenty of cafes in the ninth arrondissement if you’d rather pop out for food. Wow factor The bathroom is simply sumptuous. The rain shower, which is tucked away in its own cave, is fantastic, but the marble Japanese tub – deep enough to submerge yourself up to the neck – is the real pièce de résistance. Rooms Floor-to-ceiling windows mean the rooms are drenched in natural light. The bed is so plush and enveloping that it almost feels unfair to leave it. Bill please Double rooms start at £340pn.

volunteering trip as you are combining it with backpacking, but this won’t come cheap as charities incur administration costs to organise volunteers. Make sure you understand how your money is being spent – good volunteering programmes should be able to tell you this. For example, Wildlife Act (wildlifeact.com) states on its website that 69 per cent of its fees go on food and board. It offers a twoweek conservation programme of monitoring

endangered species in southern Africa for just under £750. A pricier alternative, at £2000, is Jubilee Ventures (jubileeventures.org) which offers a two-week programme working in Kenya’s Amboseli and Tsavo West National Parks with elephants or lions. Both give you an opportunity to observe endangered species in the wild and contribute to projects working for their survival. If you opt for the Wildlife Act programme you will be based in Zululand. From here you are in easy reach of Durban, a cosmopolitan city which is often overlooked in favour of Cape Town. If you have long enough you could take one or two internal flights to see more of South Africa, heading over to the west coast to check out Cape Town and the Garden Route, a pictureperfect coastline which offers hiking, canoeing and stunning beaches.

Top secret spot? Deep in the White Desert, you can walk inside a fossilised limestone rock formation that formed around a prehistoric whale carcass. What’s your favourite place in Cairo? Most people would say the Pyramids, but I really like the Citadel because you are in the heart of Cairo and you can see all the madness of this big city. Any safety tips for travellers? Check FCO advice, but otherwise just take usual travel precautions. On the whole, Egypt is a safe, friendly place. Best travelling memory in Egypt? I love introducing travellers to the sound and light show at Philae Temple, Aswan, where ancient history meets modern technology.

shortBREAK

facebook.com/tntmag

The other Ibiza TNT takes a break from the island’s raucous raves to discover its caves, beaches and gloriously laid-back hippy culture Words Kelly Griffin

Edging my way deep inside a dank and aging 100,000-yearold cave was the last thing I expected to be doing when I booked a quick beach holiday to legendary party island Ibiza. But here I am, ducking down narrow corridors that snake through sharp fossilised stalactites. My guide motions to a thick black ‘X’ and reveals that Can Marca caves, located on a cliff overlooking sleepy San Miguel’s port, were once a secret smugglers’ hideaway. It feels like a scene straight from Raiders Of The Lost Ark … that is until the artificial golden lights dim suddenly and dramatic red, blue and pink strobe lighting pulsate onto a nearby waterfall. I spot UV lights, too, illuminating waterpools with a green glow. You’ve got to hand it to the locals – only in club-crazed Ibiza would an ancient natural wonder be given a rave makeover. To many, Ibiza is synonymous with clubbing culture and for being the playground of the rich and famous (or the young and wasted). I’ve arrived in mid-May, about a fortnight before the big clubs open for the summer season. Though the island is certainly quieter and a little cooler in temperature during off-peak, it’s also substantially cheaper (some hotels can be four times as expensive in peak season) – and ideal for discovering what else the island has to offer aside from its nightlife. I wake to clear blue skies and glistening ocean, and decide to head off for a ramble along San Miguel’s rocky beach cliffs – through pine woods with blue, white and red wild flowers, the odd prickly cacti and magnificent views out to sea. Though this tiny island, which can be driven top to bottom in no more than 40 minutes, has been inhabited for over 2500 years, much of it is still rural and its vast array of dense woods, nature parks and beach trails make it ideal for walking and cycling. The path soon opens up to reveal a hidden cove with glamorous four-poster day beds scattered on its sandy shore. It looks heavenly, but perhaps 11am is too early to stop for sangria. Instead, I make my way up to the look-out point, where a brick-walled tower stands defiantly, one of many former pirate-spotting stations dotted around the island. After a day of leisurely exploring the area on foot, I catch a ferry to nearby island Formentera – touted to have beaches more beautiful than Ibiza’s. It takes me a while to find my sea legs on the choppy boat trip, but once there I can’t help but think, “This is paradise.” The chilled, hippy-esque

island has only become a tourist spot in recent years, and the beaches are still pristine, so I spend the day hopping from one stretch of blissfully white sand to another on a rented bicycle. Later, back on Ibiza, I get chatting with one of the staff members at my hotel, 22-year-old Mowita Schutte from Holland. She says the island doesn’t get the credit it deserves for its wide appeal beyond dance parties. “What I love about living here is that it has a really creative vibe, and there’s something for everyone, whether you’re a hippy or a millionaire.”

Even an ancient cave gets a rave makeover

“What happens in Ibiza, stays in Ibiza,” so says the mantra, but for Mowita this doesn’t refer to debaucherous nights out. ›› It’s more about “anything goes” here.

If that all sounds a bit too New Age-y, you may also be interested to know that before clubbers claimed the island as their spiritual home in the Eighties, it really was a haven for hippies. And that Sixties culture is still very much alive today. For my last night on the island, I head to the secluded bay Benirras to watch the sunset. I learn I’ve stumbled into an especially important event for the people who live here – they often stop at this spot to celebrate the day. Tonight – and on every Sunday – ‘welcome all’ crowds of people gather to watch the glowing orb we take for granted descend to the primal sounds of drum circles, the sight of fire twirlers and the smell of some peculiar tobacco. Dancing around bonfires long into the night, I can’t think of a better way to end my brief holiday on a magical island that’s been enchanting people for thousands of years. ❚ Can Marca cave entrance is £8.50pp. Aquabus return from Ibiza to Formentera is £25. From £5 to hire a bike on Formentera. For more information on Ibiza visit ibiza.travel

Something fishy: at the market

Signature style: from the traditional to the kookily modern (above left)

of 1000-plus stalls that make up the market, every now and then jumping sideways to avoid a high-speed forklift, or stopping, boggle-eyed, for a closer look at some of the sea monsters on display. Eventually, I find my way to the restaurant area, eager to sample some of the ultra-fresh goods for breakfast. Needless to say, I doubt I’ll ever enjoy better sushi as long as I live.

of neon advertisements and massive TV screens. There’s a noticeable lack of old buildings – surprising at first, until you realise the city has been almost totally rebuilt twice in the past century, once after a massive earthquake in 1923 and again after extensive World War II bombing in 1945. Luckily, the earthquake and nuclear crisis suffered by Japan in 2011 left the capital largely unscathed.

High in the sky

Alien encounters

Emerging into daylight, accompanied by a fishy new aroma unlikely to gain me many friends, I hop back on the subway. (Luckily for me, train station signs in central Tokyo are in English as well as Japanese.) I’m hurrying to the Tokyo Skytree, aware it’s only a matter of time before the next jetlag slump hits. Standing 634m high, the Skytree is the world’s tallest broadcasting tower and has an observation deck looking out over the Kanto area towards Mt Fuji in the distance. It’s the perfect place to appreciate the scale of the region and its 35 million people – without being disturbed by any of that number. In fact, it’s so peaceful up here, I decide there’s no better time or place for a sky-high power-nap, and succumb to the wave of sleepiness that’s come over me. Feeling suitably refreshed, I head back onto the streets to do what I seem to spend the best part of my week doing – wandering aimlessly among Tokyo’s central suburbs such as Ginza, Shibuya and Omotesando. The city feels endless, on a scale unlike any other metropolis you can experience. In fact, there is no obvious centre. Instead there are numerous districts, all containing a maze of streets packed with urbanites and lined with skyscrapers that rise up in a flurry

Exiting each subway can feel like entering an entirely new world and, to my Western eyes, everything seems alien. From the out-there fashions on the street to the hi-tech toys in the shops, even the smallest and most everyday things are subtly different and undeniably Japanese. It’s a place where the everyday mundanities, from crossing the road to going to the toilet (no, really), become bizarre, warped experiences. Indeed, Tokyo’s tourist board claims the Shibuya intersection is the world’s most famous road crossing, which seems like one desperately lame boast until you’ve plodded across it yourself. There you wait, among the many hundreds of pedestrians at the giant crossroads, wondering if the lights will ever change, when suddenly the carnage descends and the army charges at you from every side, all while cartoons play out on the side of buildings and music and lights assault you from each direction. And the toilets? Well, clearly aware that most locals are deeply uncomfortable with sharing the audible results of their straining and splashing, many of Tokyo’s public toilets come complete with a hi-tech interactive menu, letting you mask your deadly deeds with all manner of sounds, smells and sprays. How extremely civilised.

Neon nights After dark I find myself exploring the streets of precincts such as Shinjuku. Tokyo comes alive at night like no other city, with its love for neon transforming whole districts into massive corridors of light reaching all the way up the skyscrapers. It feels like I’m in a cheery Blade Runner. Every now and then I brace myself and take on the challenge of eating, at which I have wildly varying rates of success when brave enough to branch out from sushi and tempura. The one constant seems to be that I must detach my eyes and brain from my taste buds. You see, despite being a huge fan of Japanese food, once in Japan, it’s not all that simple. Indeed, without being familiar with most of the dishes on any menu, ordering is often a case of blindly selecting something and crossing your fingers. What I’m

By night, districts are corridors of neon light

brought, more often than not, is a selection of slimy morsels I just can’t quite acquire a taste for. The house special they might be, but that doesn’t help with the gagging reflex. By chance, my final day in the city is a Sunday, meaning I get to catch a particular Tokyo idiosyncrasy I’ve been eager to see – the Harajuku cosplay kids. After all, if there’s one thing Tokyo is obsessed with above all else, it’s style and, like most things in Japan, there’s always someone willing to take it to quite an unexpected extreme. In this case it’s the world’s oddest teenagers. Every Sunday they get dressed up in their cosplay outfits, whether it’s a corpse bride gown or a dinosaur suit and head to Harajuku where they try to outdo each other and pose for tourists. It has to be seen to be believed and is Tokyo at it’s most surreal. This is a reason why, heading to the NEXT WEEK airport after a week of sensory overload East Africa: exploring Japan’s capital, I still feel as Exploring the coast overland disorientated as the moment I arrived. ❚

desperatelyseeking

follow us on

@tntmagazine

Post your message at tntmagazine.com/seeking or email seeking@tntmagazine.com. is you, give me a shout here. I’ve got pretty good table manners and smell like soap and Brut most of the time. Pure class. Kev SUPER BALLS : The bloke with 10 stone testicles wasn’t me, but I am gifted in that department. If this is your thing get in touch with me here on Desperately Seeking. I’m also handsomer than the new Superman but with way more to squeeze into the red underwear. Sidney

a little excessive, mate. Don’t make me block you. Steven LOOK UP : Rooftops are awesome for the views and a bit of privacy save for a couple of lost gulls and cheeky-bastard pigeons. And they are a great place to enjoy the sun and sarnies. Thought I’d inspire a new generation of lunchtime climbers to help me find more parapet-placed enclaves. The vertiginous out there need not apply. Any suggestions? Minnie

Things the Queen should do before she dies

#534 Perform an inelegant on-court splits at Wimbledon like Maria Sharapova

BAD SPORT : I’m a girl seeking a guy who hates sport. I’m sick of sitting at home when my ape of a boyfriend goes to the pub to watch yet another bloody footy game. You’re not allowed to like any sport at all, not even Wimbledon. Forget all that shit. I’ve got much more interesting things we can distract ourselves doing instead of watching sweaty orcs chucking pig skins about. Jan DATE INSIGHT : Jeremy, I know you’ve got it bad, but uploading 120 pictures of your romantic evening with Mel on Facebook? It’s

ASHES FEVER: Open letter to English folk taking delight in us Aussies’ sporting demise. Yes, the Ashes may be already in Lord’s (metaphorically and physically), you spent your money well from legalised gambling at the Olympics. But I want to remind you of one thing. Australia got three through the first round of Wimbledon. You got none – Laura Robson was born in Melbourne and Andy Murray’s a Scot, so ease up for a week. Tony NORTHERN EXPOSURE: I’ve known a lot of women, and a couple blokes, and something at Burning

Man festival which may well have been alien, or cactus, but this wandering soul from the Northern Territory is ready to settle down in the northern hemisphere. Applicants please include measurements and bank balance. Thanks, Gibby BUS MORON : To the numpty who had a go at the bus driver on the 319 last week for not stopping – you have to push the ‘stop’ button before you get to your stop, not as you are speeding past it. No help to anyone mate, and your rude assault on the driver showed that logic is clearly not your forte. You were a tool of the highest calibre! Dom PORK CRACKERS : What the hell is a pork pie? Cold, more jelly and dodgy looking congealed shit than pork. Crap snack in my opinion. Lucie NIP SLIP : Gerrard, a scoop-neck T-shirt should not scoop so low it reveals your nipples. Just telling you because I care. Sarah Scent-sational RETRO WIFF: Were you wearing CK One on Thursday, Marty? Come on man, you’re better than that. That’s taking retro to the extreme, you need to update – pronto! Boris SNOT MY FAULT: It’s hard being phlegmy, especially with a post-nasal drip – sneezing out a handful of snot on the bus with nowhere to put it, constant hacking causing a sore throat, the feeling that mucus is always dripping down the back of your throat. Why would anyone want to go through it, or indeed, inflict it’s grossness on anyone unless they had no choice? Try sympathy. Karl

KISS OF DEATH: Dear Tube, can we please have an electric shock system installed on Underground escalators that goes off every time a couple decides this is a great time and place to lock lips? I already have to stare at the back of your head for 30 seconds, I don’t see why you have to subject me to a saliva-fest. Perhaps I should elbow the top-staired smoocher in the back to throw them off balance. This could be terrible for those beneath them, but there is usually collateral damage with these things. Warning issued. Cag HAVE A BALL: To the man with the 10-stone testicles. The moment I saw your ballooned-up ball on Channel 4’s documentary, I wanted it. You should have ignored the crazy doctor who told you no one would buy it once you had it lopped off to help you pay for the surgery. I would have happily spent my life savings on it. What did you do with it in the end? From the man with very average-sized testicles. Sigh NOT ABBOTT : I’m desperately seeking for the Australian public not to vote for Tony Abbott. The man is an anachronism of the highest order. The only thing more despicable than his politics are his policies. The last thing Australia needs is austerity. It’s crippled Europe. It doesn’t work. Billy BRUT APPEAL : I like posh girls. I’m not talking pretend posh girls like those plummy Sloane Ranger types, I’m talking about a lady with her own flat looking over Hyde Park who has a butler. I think I’m well due a taste of the good life. If this
