cassette boy vdj show
Do you fastidiously write lists of the things you need to do today? The things to achieve before you’re 30? The people you need to get one over again for past indiscretions? The world’s first list-making night, hosted by Musical Bingo’s Jess Indeedy, is for all those who see lists as a fun and necessary life skill.
One of the first evening street food markets in London returns after last year’s success. Each week, there’s grub from around the world, from pop-up stalls to table service dining, including the new addition the award-winning Burger Bear. DJs from Rough Trade, Dalston’s Vortex and more will soundtrack your late night munching, too.
After releasing five stonking albums in the Noughties, Cassetteboy – who cut TV game shows to sound like people are talking about drugs ‘n’ stuff, such as Bloody Apprentice vid in which SirAlun talks about shitting frying pans – are about to take their show to the Fringe after this sneak peak look for Londoners.

Hometown heroes: Auckland’s Tahuna Breaks play Homelanz’s main stage
Southern sounds Aussie, Kiwi and Saffa bands and DJs. Tim Tams, Vegemite and biltong. It must be time for this year’s Homelanz festival Words alasdair morton & laura chubb
Craving a taste of home? In need of the sights, sounds and flavours of the southern hemisphere? Then get your fix at next month’s Homelanz festival, which will be bringing together tucker, wine and music from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa for a special one-day event. Kicking off on Saturday, August 10, the impressive line-up for the third annual Homelanz has been deemed the best yet, with 15 bands spread over three stages. You’ll have the chance to listen to everything from acoustic surfrock and tribal rhythms, to emo and funk-soul while gorging on southern hemisphere food and drink from the likes of SANZA, Limpopo, Tasty Cakey and the Antipodean Sommelier. And, for the first time, Homelanz is teaming up with The Nomad Cinema to start the festivities the night before (Fri, Aug 11) with a screening of cult Down Under movie, Priscilla Queen Of The Desert. Playing the following day will be Desmond And The Tutus and Munkinpure in the Saffa corner; Blue King Brown from Australia; and for the Kiwis, I Am Giant will be performing on 8

the Global stage, with the main stage graced by Tahuna Breaks, who TNT caught up with ahead of the festival. “It’s our debut as a band in the UK,” frontman Marty Greentree (guitars/ vocals) says of what is the seven-piece heavyweight’s first show on British soil. “So the challenge is playing to a new audience in a new location and winning them over. Although they may have heard of us, the majority, I suspect, haven’t seen us live before.” The Aucklanders, named after their hometown street, have been plying their trade in funk and soul-influenced dance-rock since 2005, and this year released their critically lauded third LP, Shadow Light – a huge step towards big production-sounding pop. “We’ve learned not to overcomplicate things and to focus on our strengths,” Greentree says of the album that swiftly became one of their most well-praised. So does having seven people with different outlooks and styles make for a complicated writing process? “For sure. It’s just part of the territory when you have seven people involved,” he says. “On the last album it could have
turned out seven different ways and arguably, had we had one ‘director’, it may have made for a more cohesive stylistically sounding album. But where is the fun in that? We have form for being all over the place.” The album also sees the band fired up and playing to their strengths, too. “We just wanted to make an album that was upbeat and pumping and more in line with what we are good at,” Greentree explains. “Playing live and getting people in the party mood.” And that’s the band’s aim for Homelanz – getting everyone in a party mood. Although the festival is more than just music, which will also see performances from London-based This Flight Tonight and Bowie Jane – there’s heaps of other entertainment, too. Check out the cultural displays, the rugby bus, the chill-out zone and the silent disco. Although, we know where we’ll be – see you at the front! This multi-arts venue regularly hosts live world music acts, from the likes of Middle Eastern jazz fusion to Somali tunes. Catch Latin folk star Nano Stern on July 25, playing what is to be an exclusive London show.
This rather worthy outfit puts on a mixed bag of events every week, from “conscious film screenings” (rather than unconscious ones?), to spoken word and hip hop showcases. This Friday there’s Venezuelan Latin ska. Also look out for an evening of African and Mediterranean music (July 20) and a reggae and Afro-jazz special on July 27.

FLORIPA SHOREDITCH A brilliant Brazilianthemed bar (above) sitting pretty among the gritty madness of Great Eastern Street, Floripa not only serves up mean cachaça-heavy cocktails and Latin flavours, but also lashings of live music every week, getting the punters dancing on tables. DJs spin Latin and house tunes this Saturday and Brazilian beats ambassador DJ Cliffy will kick out the world music for a Floripa Bloc Party on July 19. We also have to mention the rap/ opera fusion night (July 23), for sheer peculiarity. Plus, it’s free! FREE

This stunning 19thcentury building (above) is most often associated with heritage rock acts like Eric Clapton, classical performances and the Proms. It also, though, hosts regular world music shows, from African beats to atmospheric jazz performances and European traditional folk music recitals, even. Nights not to miss over the summer are the Gospel Prom (July 16) and Caroline Loftus and F.R.E.D whose Ignite Brunch salutes 1950s Havanan sounds (Jul 21, 12pm).
It’s a former pharmacy-turnedrestaurant that serves up some tasty flamenco vibes on the last Friday of the month courtesy of Juan Ramirez, with some top music and dancing to accompany your paella. Book in advance.
The legendary Ronnie Scott’s has been bringing the finest jazz sounds to London for more than 50 years. Its Latin night, Viva La Revolucion!, has been running for four, and is the best place to catch the top artists – along with the houseband and special guests – from the UK scene.
This independent music venue and veggie restaurant is the sort of thing hipster-skewering Portlandia finds so funny. It is also quite ace, too, though. The Green Note’s morals are commendable, the musical line-up takes in everything from folk and blues to roots, world and jazz. Don’t miss Mosi Conde from Guinea’s leading ‘Griot family’, who will be playing a contemporary set first then a traditional set with his band, Kaira Kora Africa, on July 19 – and you can munch on a falafel burger and wash it down with organic tea while you dance.

SKYLOUNGE
High life: Skylounge
BAR
High above the rooftops of London’s skyline, this swanky bar affords drinkers stunning 360-degree panoramic views across the capital – Tower Bridge, the Thames, Gherkin, St Paul’s Cathedral and Shard all in sight. Now the sun’s shining, the two decking-style terraces are packed with cocktail-sipping punters taking advantage of the alfresco vibe. Skylounge is part of the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel, so expect tourists as well as City folk draped over the chairs and tables (no bookings in case it rains) in the stylish roof garden, which leads out from the main inside bar on the 12th floor. THE GRUB It’s very fancy pub grub, served like tiny works of art on big white plates. Choose from bar bites, such as triple-cooked chips, or platters, including spiced lamb sliders – mini burgers topped with ragout and cheese. If it’s sunny, they’ll fire up the terrace BBQ, offering dishes such as sticky ribs and grilled tuna steak. THE SCENE
An impressive selection of imaginative cocktails, fine whiskies, top-notch wines and bottled beers – all at above-average London prices. BILL PLEASE Bar bites from £3.75; sharing platters from £7. Bottled beers from £6; cocktails from £10.50; wine from £6.30/ £25.50 per glass/ bottle. VERDICT It’s the perfect place to get high in London – although the drink prices will bring you back down to earth with a bump. CAROL DRIVER BEHIND THE BAR

3 OF THE BEST FOOD WITH A VIEW
Tower Hill
DUCK AND WAFFLE
HUTONG
THE GUN
The highest restaurant in the UK lords it over London from the 40th floor of Heron Tower, the tallest building in the City. Try the titular dish, comprising crispy leg confit with fried duck egg and mustard maple syrup.
Based on its sister restaurant in Hong Kong, which gives a panoramic view over the harbour, this high-end Chinese has just opened on level 33 of The Shard. We thoroughly recommend the crispy de-boned lamb ribs.
You don’t have to get high for a great view. This Docklands gastropub has a pretty river terrace directly opposite The O2 and serves seriously superior grub, such as Cumbrian veal with sweetbreads and caper mash.

There’s a brilliant Saaz hop character and a perfect balance of flavour, with proper body and a good buzzy finish, giving the crisp refreshment of a premium lager. Bondi Beer is already available in the UK at some pubs and bars such as The Porterhouse in Covent Garden.

eco ITALIAN
Eco’s been serving up pizzas in south west London for more than 20 years and is something of a local gem. It’s undergone a bit of a facelift, though, with the interior redesigned and refurbed – bare brick walls and exposed stonework give a rural feel that transports you far from the busy Clapham High Street outside, while the high ceilings and an open kitchen make it a bustling, lively place in which to sit down and dine. The grub We kick off with some deep-fried squid (a sea-bred delight) and chilli king prawns (a flavour-spouting, fiery appetiser). There are fish (stone bass) and meat (chicken breast, pork belly) options along with pasta dishes (salmon and prawn penne), but I can’t help but plump for one of their locally famous pizzas. You’d never think of a calzone as a menu’s healthy option, but Eco offers an aubergine and mixed grilled vegetable spin on the famous cheese and ham carb-overload. I decide it is not the day to be healthy though, and tackle the real deal, which arrives a towering, folded dream of stringy mozarella, wild mushroom, artichoke and home-baked ham. My girlfriend eyes my main with jealousy, but only until her seafood ragu spaghettini special arrives. It is loaded with squid, octopus and tiger prawns and is, thankfully for me, eminently pickable. In the interests of fairness, we opt for sharesies. We should listen to our bellies and stop there, but indulgence is all to easily caved in to. After a browse of the dessert menu, we finish up with a deliciously silky pistachio panna cotta between the two of us. THE SCENE
We choose a crisp and refreshing Principato pinot grigio (£15.95), the perfect accompaniment for both the food and the balmy summer’s evening. Bill please Starters from £3.25; mains from £5.95; desserts from £4.95. verdict The new look is gorgeous and the food top drawer, but what astounded us was the bill – quality food and friendly attentive service is rarely this affordable. Eco is a regular visit destination – it’s clear why it is such a local fave. AM Behind the bar

Smashing: Corgan’s newbie Pumpkins head to Wembley
festival
watch
dockville festival
the smashing pumpkins Wembley Arena, HA9 0PA Mon, July 22 | Doors at 7pm | £38.50
Hanseplatte, 20357 Hamburg. Aug 16-18. £98
msdockville.de
This Hamburg-based festival has a top line up – Foals, The Lumineers, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Crystal Fighters, Haim (below), Chvrches and Polica, to name but a few. This with the docklandsadjacent setting makes the lesserknown fest an extra appetising prospect. A diverse line-up of electronic acts and live bands plus the wondrous architecture of one of Germany’s most beautiful cities – no brainer.
The Smashing Pumpkins were once one of the biggest alt-rock groups in the world, but they near enough imploded with band squabbles, experimental records and, some might say, Billy Corgan’s ego. They burst into the mainstream with their sophomore LP Siamese Dream, in 1993, as Cherub Rock became an alt-rock radio mainstay and Today a chart-smashing mega-hit. Follow-up Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness went multi-platinum, spawned hit singles, but they never quite managed to match this two-album success. In 1998 came Adore, an ambitious, electronic-influenced LP that ditched the rock out epics of before but failed to find the audience who had taken the Pumpkins to their heart. As Corgan said at the time, if it had been a hit they would have been hailed as geniuses. As it was, they looked a little foolish. Band members departed over the ensuing years, and Corgan is the only original one left now under the Pumpkins banner. However, bassist Nicole Fiorentino amply fills the boots of D’arcy Wretzky and Melissa Auf der Maur, while young drummer Mike Byrne, at 23, more than matches powerhouse Jimmy Chamberlain. They helped make last year’s Oceania a towering beast of a rock record. If their Nineties referencing isn’t enough, get there early to check out Ash, the Irish oiks whose alt-pop-rock regularly crashed the top 10 with hits like Burn Baby Burn and Girl From Mars. Their pure-pop with distortion chords is a euphoric burst live. A night of rock fans’ heaven. Wembley Park

In their short, seven-year career, this Canadian duo have fought through band break-ups and life-threatening medical illnesses and still managed to dish up two rifftastic albums, such as last year’s Celebration Rock. Renowned for their riotous, reputation-making live show, they are a band that deserve to be celebrated.
Apollonia, aka Parisian trio Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky, have been working together since 2012, fusing together tech and house sounds (as evidenced on their latest installment in the club’s mix series, Fabric 70) to critical and commercial success. Don’t miss them at this clubland institution this weekend.
After the more restrained yet no less ace introspection of 2010’s Personal Life, the Portland trio burst back with punkified Desperate Ground earlier this year. Expect Hutch, Kath and Westin to be on top form as they tear through Born To Kill, I Don’t Believe You and No Culture Icons like the stars they are.

Polly Money
The 18-year-old singer-songwriter on supporting Muse, her first tour and performing at TNT’s 30th birthday bash INTERVIEW alasdair morton
You’re doing loads of festival shows... I love festivals. I’ve been gigging a lot, too, and meeting people along the way which has been awesome. It’s busy but all good.
Da Money: Polly is headed for the big time
Where have you been so far? I started the summer with The Acoustic Festival of Britain, then Beach Break Live and The Rock Oyster Festival. I went to Glastonbury and Barn On The Farm just to spectate – both are fab! And then there is the Sea Level tour and TNT’s 30th birthday bash, too... Yeah, I haven’t met either Matthew [Matthew P] or Ash [Grunwald] yet, but I’m so excited about meeting and playing with them. There are some great dates and venues on the tour – I’m looking forward to my hometown show at Fistral Beach [Newquay] and I’m buzzing about TNT’s 30th birthday show at Koko, too. I’ve never been there, but everyone I talk to has said that it’s a wicked venue. It’s a very exciting time for me, as it’s both my first tour and first support tour. What are your expectations about being out on the road? Mainly I’m excited to go on tour as I haven’t done this before. I don’t know what to expect. It will be tiring but in a good way as we will all be putting our hearts and soul into the shows. Matty and Ash are both big surfers, are you equally as at home in the waves? I’m from Cornwall but I’ve never surfed. It’s so bad – I can’t believe I’m telling you that! I should be saying ‘Yeah, I am a pro surfer’ but I’m not. Hopefully I can get a few tips from Matt and Ash about getting started! You had a big gig a couple of weeks ago in Paris we hear... I did, yeah, it was crazy. I can’t believe it happened now! I was asked to support Muse at the Stade De France, in Paris. How did that come about? I was playing at Marylebone Summer Fayre in London and Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy saw the last few songs of my set. I didn’t think anything of it but just thought it was wicked they were there. Then my sister said Hudson
came and picked up one of my kites – they’re my ‘business cards’ with my website on. A couple of days later I got a call from Muse’s management asking if I’d like to support them that Saturday.
performances and his charisma. He’s a very cool artist for me. And John Mayer, too. I especially love his guitar work. They are my big two inspirations at the moment.
How was the gig? I cannot quite describe how awesome it was. I got to meet the team and Matt Bellamy. Dizzee Rascal and Biffy Clyro were also on the bill. I was completely blown away by the whole show.
He does a lot of improv-y things... Yeah. I hope to add some improv into my own performances, so I’m practising this right now. I do a lot of vocal improv already and have a big passion for the guitar, so this has inspired me to get better.
What went through your mind when you were waiting in the wings to go on? You know what, it’s a massive venue and nothing like I’ve played before so when I saw the audience [the stadium holds 80,000] I was still like ‘Oh my gosh!’. But I was totally ready for it. I gave it my all and went out there to entertain people. You look very calm on the footage… Haha. Is that what it looked like? I still can’t quite believe it happened. I was so grateful to the Muse team for giving me the opportunity. It got my social networks flying so hopefully I can build on this as I’m just at the start of my career as an artist. Who do you look up to musically? Jason Mraz. I love his songwriting, his
Then you’re out on tour in August, too... Yeah, I’m touring with Blues Boy Dan Owen, who is wicked. It’s in Cornwall and Devon, so it will be a fun tour mostly on my home patch. What are you doing before the Sea Level tour starts? I’m back in Cornwall, so just chilling out and writing a lot. I have a few driving lessons as I have my test next week, too. Mum and Dad will be pleased when I can drive myself to gigs! The boys are back: the Cornetto trilogy comes to a fitting finale
the world’s end FILM review Alasdair Morton Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan | 15 | 108mins | Out July 19
the frozen ground FILM Starring: Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, Vanessa Hudgens | 15 | 105mins
Cusack is real-life serial killer Robert Hansen, stalking Vanessa Hudgens with cop Nic Cage on the case in frozen Alaska in this Silence Of The Lambsesque thriller. Hudgens continues to come of age and leave her Disney days behind, but it is Cusack playing against type that most appeals here. On general release July 19

TNT_1559_026 26
Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s final installment in their blood and ice cream-Cornetto trilogy comes with a lot of expectation. Simply put, it’s better than Hot Fuzz, but not as good as Shaun Of The Dead. Pegg is Gary King, former Sisters Of Mercy lovin’ high school cool kid who never got over how life post-teens didn’t match up to his ambitions. In an attempt to relive the glories of his youth he gets his 40-pushing best buds – Nick Frost’s corporate lawyer; Paddy Considine’s business owner; Martin Freeman’s estate agent and Eddie Marsan’s family business employee – back together for one last go at the hometown 12-pub crawl that marked the end of their hope-filled days. The drama between the five friends is strong – particularly King and Frost’s Andy, who has a grudge to bear against his old friend – as the crew contemplates how they measured up to their teenage selves as they approach middle age. Pegg is rightly cast as the funny man, which plays to his strengths after his straight man role in Fuzz, and it’s as fast-paced, quirk-filled, zany and offbeat as you would expect. Some ‘chain pub’ bar room brawling with Andy, bar stools clenched in each hand, is an excellent middle England meets The Matrix moment. But with the shift into sci-fi territories as the inhabitants of former stomping ground Newton Haven show a sinister side, comes a uneven shift in sensibility. Some top surprises and genre nods will delight, though. And if it is to be the group’s swansong, then it is a fittingly puerile and grown-up way to go out. Good for: Fans of quirky Brit comedy, sci-fi nods and ice cream jokes

Twelfth Night & The Taming of the Shrew
EXHIBITION
THEATRE
Goldsmith’s graduate painter Gary Hume, who is much celebrated for his individual use of colour and surface, is the focus of this career-spanning exhibition that shows some of his most famous works, some lesser-known career entries, as well as other pieces that have not previously been shown in the UK before.
All-male touring company Propeller brings these revivals of two of Shakespeare’s comedies both of which have an underlying darkness. Most accessible – and brutal – is their interpretation of Shrew, a no-holds-barred account of a man viciously determined to break the will of his chosen woman to gain her fortune. Their Twelfth Night is much more restrained. LK

vikki stone What’s the show about? It’s my new touring show, Definitely, which is a mix of stand-up, songs and general silliness. Why has sports presenter Clare Balding been something of a musical comedy inspiration? I find prolific gilet wearers to be very inspiring! Where was your first comedy show? My first solo stand-up show was three years ago, and I wouldn’t change anything. Not to sound too cheesy, but I like learning from my mistakes. Not that the show was a mistake…

The other Ashes If you reckon cricket is totally wrong-un, we’ve put Australia and England head-to-head on 10 things that may actually matter to you Words Michael Gadd
As the first ball of the Ashes flew wide at Trent Bridge in Nottingham last week, excitement swept through England and Australia. The balloon of anticipation was burst as cricket fans got to see the friendly(ish) battle that’s waged since 1882 finally reignited. Meanwhile, many others couldn’t give a toss. So being an equal opportunity magazine, this is for you – the other Ashes; a toe-to-toe, nose-to-nose, tastebud-to-tastebud battle between the old enemies.
Coffee… WINNER: AUSTRALIA When Starbucks is a viable option for decent coffee in your country, you’re conceding caffeine isn’t your forte. Sorry England. On the other hand, the Australian coffee culture, in major cities anyway, has benefited from millions of Italian and Greek immigrants kindly opening cafes and showing how it’s done for decades. The quality of an Aussie heartstarter is embodied in the humble flat white, and you can get a beauty from Antipodean baristas at Soho’s Flat White Cafe (flatwhitecafe.com).
Beaches… WINNER: AUSTRALIA Some people like long walks in the rain on a secluded beach. Others may hate sand so much the massage of stones on the shore are a godsend. Some doesn’t equal most though, and Australia dominates when it comes to sun, surf, sand and skin cancer, making it a clear winner here.
Cheer up: English classic EastEnders
Art… WINNER: ENGLAND This is not the walkover you’d expect, with the diverse history of Britain and a obscenely impressive amount of major galleries and museums. The view may change when Australia sends a stack of its finest and most famous works this year in a bid to highlight the Brits’ “shameful” ignorance of Down Under art. More than 200 works from two centuries will go on show at the Royal Academy in London courtesy of the National Gallery of Australia, including Frederick McCubbin’s The Pioneer and Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly (Australia is open September 21 to December 8). But that doesn’t excuse Ken Done’s towels.
Breakfasts… WINNER: ENGLAND Sure, Australia does a fancier, more refined breakfast – see Bill Granger’s scrambled eggs and the fact no Aussie would blink at corn fritters with bacon and avocado salsa, but England can’t be beaten. When do you have breakfast out? At the weekend. What are you at the weekend? Hungover. What’s best when you’re that? A full English. Sometimes it’s half a plate of beans and the toast is soggy, but a mammoth builder’s brekkie where the only choice is whether you finish it or not is a thing of beauty. Voted last year’s best was the behemoth at Croydon’s Fat Boys Café (306 Thornton Road, CRO 3EU; tel. 020 8665 1735). Shout out to the classy Aussiethemed Lantana at Fitzrovia (lantanacafe.co.uk). ››

Super brew: the Great British Beer Festival
Beer… WINNER: ENGLAND
Barbies... WINNER: AUSTRALIA
This is a toughie. Australia’s beer has moved well beyond the menu being VB, XXXX or New, depending on the state. The likes of Cooper’s and Little Creatures now feature prominently on the taps of pubs and often in bottles here in London – and they’re no longer the ponsy bottled ones you buy to look classy. But England, London alone, has been bitten by the craft beer bug too, with the likes of Greenwich’s Meantime dishing out super tasty brews. Check out more than 100 of them at the London Craft Beer Festival (londoncraftbeerfestival.co.uk) on August 16-18 in Bethnal Green. Or if you hail the Pommy cask ales, hit up the epic Great British Beer Festival (gbbf.org.uk) at Olympia in Kensington on August 13-17, where there’s 800-plus real ales, ciders and other boozy delights.
If a contest of fortitude and resilience, England would win the meat raffle every time. Sun sneaking through the clouds is barbie weather here and if the heavens open up after the snags hit the coals – for far longer than they should – there’s no turning back. But in Australia, even snags on white bread with tomato sauce is a gourmet delight in the sunshine – and that’s before we get into the far more adventurous fare. If you’re having a blowout, get the Aussie Barbeque Company (aussiebbq.co.uk) involved – they can feed 100 for £5 a head.
Pies… WINNER: AUSTRALIA
Soapies… WINNER: ENGLAND Tears and tantrums are a strong point for both nations, and the Poms’ love of Neighbours and Home And Away, which both air back-to-back here in primetime on Channel 5 – while the likes of Coronation St and the hilarious Hollyoaks haven’t really captured the hearts of Aussies. But EastEnders is the tie-breaker – those Londoners are so bloody sad all the time we’d hate to add to their misery by not letting them win. Watch it on BBC One weeknights at 7.30pm. 30
TNT_1559_030 30
The fauna of Australia is renowned, cute and cuddly koalas (not bears) and kangaroos the most famed. At London Zoo you can get up close with red-necked wallabies and emus – do it with a beer in hand at Zoo Lates, running Fridays until August 2 (zsl.org). But these postcard animals paper over the fact that a lot of Aussie wildlife doesn’t want to cuddle you, it wants to kill you, from tiny funnel-web spiders to massive crocs. England on the other hand, has animals that are either very tasty (deer and rabbits) or quite cool (badgers and puffins).
Football… WINNER: AUSTRALIA In Feburary 2003, Australia played England in a game of football at Upton Park. Forgetting that the game was a friendly, a decade ago and England was testing different line-ups in each half, Australia won 3-1 – by this measure, the only fair conclusion is Australia is, ahem, better at football.

What passes for a pie in Britain is nothing short of a scandal – a stew with a puff pastry lid does not a dog’s eye make. A great pie can be held with one hand (a beer in the other), such as the fine work of the Great Australian Pie Company (grab one at good festivals) or the humble Four’n’Twenty. Or get the closest thing to a top quality Aussie pie in London at fancy Square Pie (squarepie.com) in Old Spitalfields Market.
Animals… WINNER: ENGLAND

LifestyleHEALTH CLASS OF THE WEEK
swing dancing Having been swept up in the recent influx of Prohibition-era parties, I have developed the desire to learn swing dancing. Probably because I would like to know what I’m doing, rather than look like a penguin trying to run on the spot when attempting the Charleston. Scottie Cupit, an Aussie who runs Swing Patrol, was happy to help me out at one of his beginner classes (they also offer levels 1.5 and 2, plus social dances after the classes). With flapjack snacks and alcohol on offer, there’s a real social atmosphere to the class, which is a good thing as you have to get pretty close to people you’ve just met as you form a circle where the followers (usually women), move around to dance with each lead (usually men). There were times I had to dance alone due to the male/female ratio, but it gave me a chance to watch others and learn. I was surprised how quickly a simple triple-step turned into a routine, with turns and everything. By the end I was asked to dance by a more experienced learner and managed to get through a whole song with no penguin legs in sight. £8. Classes held five days a week across London. See website for details. CG

Play dress-up It’s (nearly) our birthday and we’ll dress up if we want to. Grab your silliest costume and join us Words caroline garnar
We love a bit of fancy dress here at TNT Towers. If we had our way, we would spend our desk days dressed as a variety of animals, food and superheroes (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a favourite). In lieu of this, we have decided to throw a huge themed shindig for our upcoming big 3-0. And, as we are always thinking of our readers, the kind souls that we are, we figured you’re probably missing the sea and sand of home, so we are having a beach party. “We’ll be looking for the most imaginative takes on our theme and will give the best a suitably awesome reward,” our Ed, Laura Chubb, explains. Think chilled-out beach BBQ with your mates. “You have to be in it to win it – as no one says – so get thinking and bring your game on down to Koko on July 28,” Chubb adds. Tickets are £15 from tickets.sealeveltour.com. Of course we are not holding the only themed event in town (although it’ll be the best one, say we). Here’s a round-up of where else to go and look ridiculous.
Get your glad rags on THE EVENT: All aboard the SS Atlantica (ssatlantica.com) for a 1930s cruise in all its splendour. Set sail on July 27 for a decadent night of cabaret acts, live bands and Champagne-fuelled lindy hop. THE OUTFIT: “The dress code is ‘at-sea formal-wear’,” Andria Stiring, CEO of event organisers Bourne and Hollingsworth, says. “Gentlemen should emulate the starched collar and immaculate dinner suit of an Agatha Christie villain, and ladies can take their inspiration from the silk and fur ensembles worn by stars of the silver screen.” Head for your nearest vintage store, or try fairygodmother.co.uk for a good selection of classic 1930s costumes.
Prepare to scare THE EVENT: Film4’s FrightFest brings blood and gore courtesy of horror film screenings at Empire Cinema in Leicester Square from August 22-26 (frightfest.co.uk). THE OUTFIT: “There’s been a long tradition

Blades of glory: rise above office stresses as a pilot with The London Helicopter
Be a high f lier Fancy an office in the sky? Great panoramic views and exhilaration guaranteed. Wusses need not apply Words caroline garnar Now the sun’s out, we’d rather be outside than cooped up in a stuffy office. Here, TNT chats to professionals living the high life ...
Helicopter pilot “There’s almost nothing better than being in command of a flying machine – especially when happy passengers are paying you for the privilege,” smiles Aussie pilot Chris Mann, MD of The London Helicopter, which offers sightseeing tours over London as well as charter flights. It’s an expensive career choice as you will need to get your private and commercial pilot licences before you can apply, however you can earn £40k+ once trained. Mann worked as an instructor before “twisting the 40

High-rise window cleaner Ever wanted to abseil down one of London’s tallest buildings? Become a high-rise window cleaner and that’s basically what you do every day, but with a squeegee in your hand. “I love being up high over London on a summer’s day,” says Kyriacos Theodorous, who is an on-site cleaner at the 88m Lloyds of London HQ in Lime Street. High-rise window cleaners need intense safety training, including how
to work safely at height – by not falling or dropping anything – avoiding back or muscle problems, working in cradles and cherry pickers as well as abseiling. The good news is that your company will put you through the training needed, so your beginner’s salary of £25k can stay in your pocket. Plus, although serious, the training can be great fun. “For my abseil course I went to the Lake District and we had to climb around chimneys and practice rescues,” says the 29-year-old, who is employed by Principle Cleaning Services. “That was the hardest but also the best experience.”

How did you get into your job? When I was at uni I worked at a tiny espresso bar with a wonderful old Italian barista named Mauro. He piqued my interest in coffee and I used to bug him to teach me. I then moved on to other positions, working with roasters, technicians and other more experienced baristas. What do you do day-to-day? I make sure our coffee is tasting the way it should, source new coffees and hold training sessions. What’s the most rewarding part? Being able to work with such fantastic products. Our local roasters include Union Hand-Roasted Coffee, Nude and Square Mile. They produce some incredible flavours and make sure the farmers are paid a fair price. And the most challenging? Making sure that the coffee is perfect whilst a dozen other urgent things are happening is incredibly difficult. curatorscoffee.com
How to... attend
to the details We all know you should dress smart for an interview, but don’t forget the little things...
• Make sure your fingernails are neat and trimmed. Women should stick to neutral polish.
• Try wearing a brooch or pocket handkerchief. If you have it at the level one would wear a medal, it connotes status.
• Add personality with a splash
of bright colour – in your jacket lining, socks or other accessory – but keep it subtle.

They say dogs are man’s best friend. And one Aussie guy proved this to be the case when he performed mouthto-mouth on a Fox Terrier-Jack Russell that had been run over by a car. Steve Hunter saw the accident in which Salty bolted from a driveaway in Victoria into the road. He carried the mutt to safety and “did the deed”. Hunter said: “I gave him CPR, did the whole works. I pulled his jaw apart. I got as close as I could and I was blowing air in his throat and giving him CPR on his ribcage.” The five-yearold hound is now doing well. Let’s hope Hunter brushed his teeth afterwards. tweets of the week @DHughesy I’ve always believed in Ashton Agar since I first knew of him an hour ago #ashes @Spacebeak Probably easier to climb The Shard in just a pair of underpants, than face Jimmy Anderson at the moment #Ashes #EngvAus
nz to light up for royal baby new zealand
Talk about excited. A pro-monarchy group in NZ is planning to honour the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first baby by illuminating the country’s favourite landmarks. Sky Tower and the Cloud in Auckland will all get the special treatment the day after the bundle of joy arrives – expected last weekend. The landmarks will be lit up in pink or blue, depending on whether it’s a boy or a girl, according to Monarchy New Zealand. 44

snake breaks into shop, poos on floor australia
Police expected foul play when a charity store was broken into, the suspect leaving a pile of sticking poo on the floor before escaping. However, the cat burglar turned out to be a snake burglar – a 5.7-metre python who left the smelly memento for staff at the St Vincent de Paul charity shop in the
north Queensland town of Ingham. “We thought a person had fallen through the ceiling because the roof panel was cut in half,” Sergeant Don Auld said. “When they’ve hit the floor they’ve vomited and then staggered and fallen over. That’s what we thought anyway.” The 17kg python had plummeted through the ceiling (damaged from Cyclone Yasi in 2011), knocking over items, before relieving itself all over the store. “There was crockery scattered all over the place, smashes, and a big doo doo on the floor,” said Virginia McGrath, the snake handler called in to catch the reptile.

Just what the movie industry is lacking – a film about sharks and a tornado. Well, clever producers spotted that gap in the market, and last week, the trailer for Sharknado was released. Dubbed ‘so bad, it’s good’, the film could outdo movies such as Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus and Piranha 3D. Starring American Pie beauty Tara Reed, Sharknado features an apocalyptic event in which thousands of sharks are picked up in a tornado and thrown teeth-first at victims. One of the highlights of this mindblowing teaser is a scene in which a ferocious flying shark is hacked in half by the film’s hero with a chainsaw. Watch it at tntmagazine.com

It’s pretty far-fetched, but Keith Robins is standing by his story. The 37-yearold claims a fleet of spacecrafts stole his belongings. Robins said he was on a camping trip in Wales with friends when the alien vessels made off with his Datsun Cherry and its contents – including a eight-week-old dog inside. Thinking of getting the snip? Fancy the operation being done in front of a live audience? Who wouldn’t? The Royal Institution of Australia wants men to have vasectomies on a stage to encourage “more open discussion on male contraception and population control”. Spokesman Lisa Bailey said: “It’s a good way to get people starting to discuss how we do think about population, how we think about managing birth rates.” Strangely enough, the plan has not been met with universal approval. The Australian Medical Association said strict safeguards would need to be in place.

Risky: Greenpeace protesters on The Shard
High-profile protests don’t address our broken system
Photo: Getty
Arctic drilling is a symptom of politics operating for big business
I won’t lie, when I first spotted the Greenpeace protesters with my own peepers through the window at TNT Towers, my instinctive reaction was ‘I hope they don’t all fall… but I wouldn’t mind if one of them fell.’ I said fell, not die, calm down; I imagined one of the, I hoped, dreadlocked protesters, tumbling down the glass facade of The Shard, eventually crashing through the window of a meeting room and into the lap of dayglo tanned oil executive. Their instinct is to hate each other, but their eyes meet and it’s love at first sight. That’d be ace right? Returning to Earth from my rom-com daydream, I noticed the police chopper and thought resentfully about the money going into policing this protest, especially at a time when public cash is so tight. Not that I disagree with what they were protesting about. Arctic drilling is immensely shitty. It says something desperately depressing about the oil industry when the first thing petrol companies can think to do when the ice cap recedes – due in part to the side effects of their operations – is drill for more of it there. They don’t see global warming as an indictment on their industry, they see it as an opportunity. The umbrage I take with protests like Greenpeace’s on The Shard is they don’t address the fundamental problem that leads to things such as arctic drilling, the banking crisis, and Austerity. The reason these things happen is because our political system is broken. It no longer serves the interest of the public, but the interests of big business and politicians. This isn’t a controversial assertion. And it’s one that could be solved fairly simply. The public needs to be protected from the vested interests of politicians and the leverage of big business. No second jobs for MPs and no consulting. No investing in firms with, or tendering for, government contracts. If that means paying them properly, so be it. If our government gave a single shit about its people, arctic drilling wouldn’t happen, neither would legal aid cuts or NHS privatisation, and no one would have to climb, or fall off, anything. » Agree or disagree? letters@tntmagazine.com
KATIE HOPKINS’ BIG MISTAKE The one thing Katie Hopkins is right about, and I stress it is the only thing, is that what she says is what some people think. The thing is, the people whose opinions she gives voice too, are, like her, a bit thick. Writing in The Mirror, Hopkins, who recently caused consternation by claiming she judged children by their names, rather neatly exposed her central misunderstanding of humanity: “When people hate me, it’s because I have hit on something that relates to them.” Here Hopkins helpfully, with almost laudable conciseness, provides evidence to suggest
“
She needs help not media exposure
”
that she has no theory of mind, no empathy beyond those people she perceive to be in her social class. It is this, mercifully rare, catastrophic failure of personal development which leads to the kind of stilted, logically and morally indefensible opinions she holds. She doesn’t need exposure, she needs help. TNTMAGAZINE.COM

That was awkward As KRudd shares his shaving tips on Twitter, TNT looks at other Aussie politicians’ cringe-worthy moments WORDS CAROL DRIVER
Politicians can be buffoons sometimes, can’t they? Either by wanting to come across as ‘street’ or as ‘one of the people’ while being as embarrassing as a pissed relative trying to dance with one of your mates at a wedding, or they’ll remove all doubt that they’re completely incompetent by doing something outrageous (chair sniffing?). Why can’t they stick to what they should be doing – like, erm, running the country? Here, in honour of Aussie prime minister Kevin Rudd last week tweeting a photo of his face having cut himself shaving, TNT looks at the top mishaps by other blundering Australian politicians. Get ready to cringe.
Kevin Rudd: Political cuts In an attempt to fulfill a desire to be considered ‘a normal bloke’, KRudd felt the need to share the fact he’d nicked his face shaving with his million-plus fans on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook (just to make sure all bases were covered). KRudd – just weeks after being back at the helm in Australia – posted the ‘selfie’ of his wounded face, complete with a bit of toilet paper over the cut, along with the comment: “Note to self: when rushing out the door in the morning, make sure you take care with the razor. It is sharp.” Good, sturdy advice, KRudd – that’s exactly the reason you’re in power; never mind the economy, this is what matters. Drawing comparisons to ex-leader Julia Gillard being photographed knitting a baby kangaroo for the Duchess of Cambridge’s firstborn, @Jo_Miller tweeted: “KRuddMP seriously, dude? Remember how people thought it was unbecoming of a PM to be photographed knitting a child’s toy?” Quite.
Craig Emerson: No Whyalla wipe-out The only way you can watch this video is with one eye closed. It’s that cringe-worthy. Starting off with a weird, awkward jig, Craig Emerson bursts into song during an interview to ABC news in 2012. In an attempt to mock opposition leader 48
TNT_1559_048 48
Tony Abbott’s claim that the government’s carbon tax would wipe out the town of Whyalla, Emerson ended up coming off worse, after launching into a musical in the form of Skyhooks’ 1975 hit single Horror Movie. Live on camera (watch it on YouTube) he sings, while moshing his head up and down: “No Whyalla wipe-out, right there on my TV. No Whyalla wipe-out, right there on my TV. “No Whyalla wipe-out, right there on my TV, shocking me right out of my brain. Shocking me right out of my brain.” Summing up the mood of the nation, muzzavideos commented: “This is just so embarrassing, I have look away, I can’t watch it, I actually feel sorry for the poor bloke. He looks like he might have an illness, I hope he gets help.”
Peter Collier: Sneaky nuts “What I genuinely saw was a nice photo of a young man with what I thought was possibly his father.” That may be the case, but it wasn’t the reality of the situation, was it, Peter Collier? Instead, what the West Australian minister for education actually did was ‘like’ on Facebook a photo of a teenager exposing his testicles. The gaffe, which was made public earlier this year, involved an image of a 16-year-old with a bunch of mates, but with his shorts slightly pulled down at the front. Collier failed to spot the prank. WA’s opposition spokeswoman for Community Services Sue Ellery pointed out: “This is a man who is a senior minister in charge of the professional standards of dealing with young people and young people’s use of social media.”
Bill Shorten: Towing the line You’d expect politicians to be an educated bunch, complete with their own views and opinions ‘n’ all. Not Bill Shorten. Oh no. He’s a Labor man though and through, who will think whatever he’s told to by the party hierarchy – even if he doesn’t know what it is. Last year, the then workplace

Back to 2008, a time when men were men, and politicians were, well, chair sniffers. Despite denying it 13 times, the opposition leader Troy Buswell this year finally ‘fesses to (more) offensive behaviour. After a string of allegations – including pinging women’s bras – Buswell concedes he sniffed the chair of a Liberal staffer, writhing in mock sexual pleasure after she had been sitting in his office in 2005. As you do. Although there was outrage, Liberal MPs instead stood by Buswell, and, rather surprisingly, there was no leadership change. The party’s deputy, Kim Hames, said: “Troy’s a rough diamond and you don’t fix a rough diamond by smashing it to pieces,” he said. “And when you get to know him and know what he’s like, these incidences aren’t what he’s like.” Buswell continued in politics to grab a man’s crutch, claim money he wasn’t entitled to, have an affair, notch up nine speeding offences, and be accused of dry humping a businessman. So, yeah, turns out that’s exactly what he’s like.

For more than 19 weeks, TNT has been campaigning with your help against the UK Border Agency. We’ve revealed horror stories, gained press coverage in the UK and Australia, and attracted support from high-profile MPs. To read our coverage so far, visit tntmagazine.com/ukba. Fifteen weeks ago it was announced the UK Border Agency will be split into two organisations – one dealing with visas. In true shambolic style, a name for the office, and how it’s going to work, is yet to be decided. So far, all that’s clear is that it’s going to be the same staff, reporting to the same bosses, in the same building, operating within the same budgets. Therefore, our demands for this new entity remain the same. Add your voice to TNT Magazine’s UKBA Balls-Up campaign to demand the new office changes its policies so that:
✔ Every applicant receives correspondence when an application has been received ✔ Advice is then sent to all applicants detailing the process system and what it means for those wanting to work or travel ✔ Every applicant gets access to an emergency helpline which they can call for updates at any time, not only after six months ✔ The target for processing visas for those based in the UK who are eligible to work is reduced to three months ✔ A full refund is offered to applicants if their application takes longer than the target time if it is due to UKBA incompetency ✔ The amount of premium service appointments is increased – and a full refund is offered to applicants if the UKBA doesn’t adhere to the allotted 24-hour timescale ✔ Applicants wishing to extend visas to stay in the UK can do so before the ‘28 days before expiry’ deadline Add your name to our government epetition. This is how it went. “I haven’t seen what she’s said, but let me say I support what it is she said,” he told interviewer David Speers. “Hang on, you haven’t seen what she said?” Speers said. Shorten nodded: “But I support what my prime minister said.” When Speers asked for his personal view, he said: “My view is what the prime minister’s view is.” The anchor pressed: “Surely you must have your own view on this.” Shorten replied: “No, when you ask me if I’ve got a view on this, it’s such a general question, it invites me to go to lots of places.” Like where? The 2011 knockout champions have set the benchmark so far this year in the UK premier rugby league tournament, and will be keen to keep their campaign going for the double (on Sky Sports 1 at 8pm). While the big Premier League clubs are traipsing around the world picking up whopping cheques and building their international brands, including Liverpool playing in Melbourne, Crystal Palace is staying in London. Newly promoted Palace is basing all of its pre-season friendlies within striking distance of their west London base ahead of their return to the top flight. Ian Holloway’s men, who won promotion in the play-offs from Watford, will start their pre-season campaign in east London on July 20 at Dagenham & Redbridge before matches at Gillingham in Kent on July 23 and Crawley Town in west Sussex on July 27. The side who boast Aussie Mile Jedinak at the heart of their defence also play at Waterford in Hertfordshire on August 3 and on August 6 against Dulwich Hamlet in Southwark. Visit cpfc.co.uk for tickets.
Doesn’t matter what happens in the final week of the Tour de France, it’s been a demon debut for Orica Green EDGE. Sure, Chris Froome will likely take the biccies, but a massive nod must go to the Australia-based team. After avoiding the drama of the first stages, OGE won stage three through Simon Gerrans. The next day they won the fourth stage in the team time trial, a cracking effort which gave Gerrans the yellow jersey. The Aussie held the coveted colour for two days, before sacrificing himself to hand the same jersey to his teammate Daryl Impey.

TNT’s extensive Ashes coverage as the Aussies fight to return the urn Biff: Mitchell Pearce and Billy Slater have a friendly chat during Origin 2
PREVIEW FIREWORKS EXPECTED FOR ORIGIN 3 NSW V QLD: STATE OF ORIGIN 3 WED, 10.30AM
Laurie Daley’s New South Wales team dominated the first, but the second saw Queensland return to dominance. It sets up a beauty for this Wednesday morning at ANZ Stadium in Sydney as NSW try to end seven years of dominance from Mal Meninga’s men. Every talking head has promised there will be fireworks. And it’s not just the big forwards such as Paul Gallen, who got a match suspension for punching his opposite number Nate Myles a few times in the first one – Blues halfback Mitchell
Pearce, criticised for poor performances so far in the series, has said he’s going to “come after” Queensland and Australia fullback Billy Slater. They might be better served by playing footy, as the NRL is taking a dim view of the biff that so many commentators and fans seem intent on bringing back. Maroons outside back Brent Tate, who copped a cheap shot from Blues enforcer Trent Merrin that led to a scuffle and four players in the sin bin in game two, agrees: “I have always been a believer that what happens on the field stays on the field,” he said. He’s right on that, except for the bragging rights, they’ll last forever.

Lord’s finest The home of cricket is a magnet for magic moments – here’s 10 of the best ahead of this week’s second Test WORDS MICHAEL GADD
Iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground was a happy hunting ground for the Australians, who were unbeaten here from 1934 until Andrew Strauss’s England broke the drought in 2009. As the sides prepare for their 34th Test at the home of cricket, starting Wednesday, we revisit some of its great moments.
1. Dominant Don: Bradman 1930 The Aussie champion who averaged 99.94 at the end of his career called his 254 here his best knock. He wrote of it: “Practically without exception every ball went where it was intended to go, even the one from which I was dismissed, but the latter went slightly up in the air.” Who’s to argue.
Andrew Strauss didn’t play many more important innings than his 161 in England’s first dig. It set up a 115-run win, and gave England a 2-1 series lead, which they kept with a draw at The Oval. It was England’s first Lord’s win since 1934.
5. Sweet 16: Massie 1972
Probably Australia’s least-popular captain, Hughes was majestic on his day, and rarely better than the Centenary Test. He batted on each day of the rain-addled match for 117 and 84 to win man of the match and rare plaudits.
Aussie quick Glenn McGrath loved Lord’s – in 1997 he tore through England’s top order and then the tail to take
TNT_1559_052 52
Mike Atherton’s innings in 1993 was impressive and tragic. Digging in to save an unlikely draw, he lasted 215 balls for 99 runs, one short of his first Lord’s ton. Then partner Mike Gatting sent him back, he slipped and was run out. England’s last four wickets fell for four runs they lost by an innings.
6. Kim’s centenary: Hughes 1980
3. Ooh, aah: McGrath 2005
52
4. Almost Ather-ton: Atherton 1993
Ashton Agar’s innings was impressive, but 25-year-old Bob Massie’s debut with the ball was not far off it. The swing bowler snagged eight wickets in each innings for match figures of 16 for 137, still the best of any Aussie in a Test.
2. Captain’s knock: Strauss 2009
1
8-38, figures only bettered by Ian Botham. Then, in 2005, he passed the huge milestone of 500 wickets by removing Marcus Trescothick. He held the ball aloft before taking 5-21.

7. All hail Freddie: Flintoff 2009 Injured all-rounder Andrew Flintoff was warrior-like. Brad Haddin and Michael Clarke got Australia within 220 of an unlikely win on day five, chasing 522. Flintoff told skipper Strauss he’d bowl “until all the wickets are gone”. He got five-for and milked it for all he could (see his salute above).
8. Toilet break: Steele 1975 David Steele was an unglamorous pick, but he faced down Lillee and Thommo so well he won BBC Sports Personality of the Year. His Lord’s debut will be remembered though for him going down one too many flights of stairs and ending up in the toilets instead of on the field.

No offence at all intended to Robbie Deans or Mickey Arthur, but Australian coaches for Australian teams seems to be better for all involved. After Saffa Arthur got dumped preAshes for Darren ‘Boof’ Lehmann, Kiwi Deans paid the price for a Lions defeat. When appointed to their cricket and rugby posts they were for sure the best qualified for the job, but a resume doesn’t make someone the most appropriate. Ewen McKenzie, whose nickname ‘Link’ is less used but similarly brutish after wrestler The Missing Link, now commands the Wallabies, and the similarities to
“
Coaches command respect from players
”
Lehmann are surely no accident. Aussie rugby and cricket need hard heads who command respect in the dressing room from teams struggling with discipline. It helps these two are students of their games, with early success as coaches and impressive careers behind them. Aussie fans could soon be saying ‘you beauty’.

Isn’t sport going well in this country at the moment? The Lions tour, Wimbledon joy at last and Ashes favouritism. Even the Olympics still has steam with the upcoming Anniversary Games at Stratford. As an Aussie in London, I don’t begrudge England one bit of this success. Much of it is deserved and all of it brings the vibe in a pub up an impressive notch, a fact I’ll never complain about. But after an encounter with one English ‘fan’ too many last week, I’d like to offer what would in friendly terms be called a ‘pull your head in’. My new mate, at a pub obviously, was wearing a matching blue England tracksuit, drinking Carling (probably) and very likely had his pitbulls tied up out the front – I really hope he doesn’t read TNT. His vocabulary was limited, at best, not his fault but that of the British education system. So I took his jibes, such as, “Ha ha, Australia’s shit at cricket now.” And, “You’re bollocks at rugby now too.” Any response involving talk of rebuilding phases, diminished funding and questions of why talent pools are drying up weren’t worth the hassle, so I went with a smile (not too big though, would hate him to think I was a poof) and a nod with an undertone of ‘please don’t feed me to your dogs’. But to those English who are slightly less likely to glass me, and to Aussies who are dealing with this ‘banter’ – and it is almost always good fun banter – I’d like to say this: • The British and Irish Lions won because most of the team were so comfy wearing red (as they were Welsh). Of the 71 Lions points scored in Tests, five were scored by the English. • Andy Murray is a Scot. An Englishman claiming his success is like Australia getting warm and fuzzy about the All Blacks. And Laura Robson was born in Melbourne. • But the biggest is to come. Next year is the World Cup in Brazil, where the weight of expectation will almost certainly be met with a thud. The Australians have done well to get there, so are under zero pressure, and I’d probably back them in a penalty shoot-out.

Give us a lift: Lollapalooza in Chicago is a rock institution
HATE CAMPING? DON’T WE ALL… Nine out of 10 people hate camping, according to a new survey, and I wholeheartedly agree. A night out ‘under the stars’ is a night in hell as far as I’m concerned, but I’m shocked that so many people actually admitted to it.
Because everyone always lies about camping, don’t they? That it was fun sleeping on cold, bumpy ground, with nothing to eat that wasn’t freeze-dried, and bugs crawling everywhere. And I always lie right back when people tell me about their overnight adventures in the Great Outdoors. I’m not sure why, but I pretend I think it sounds amazing. “Oooh, middle-of-nowhere, up at dawn, were you? Wow, that sounds like such an incredible experience.” Incredibly awful. But at least in this poll, conducted by travel company Holiday Extras (holidayextras.co.uk), 90 per cent of the 2000 people questioned came clean and admitted they’d take any kind of holiday over a camping one. I’ve only ever camped a few times. Once at a music festival, although I’m not sure it counts if you use your tent as a place to store beer rather than sleep in. Another time on the coast in Fujairah, in the UAE, there was such a violent storm that I woke up grinding sand between my teeth, with more stuck to my sweaty face. It was the worst. I’d only give it another go if I could have certain creature comforts guaranteed. A decent air bed to sleep on and a portable coffee machine at least (Nescafé sache?? Get outta here). Someone to bring hot, cooked food in the morning. Oh and four walls and a ceiling would be lovely too…

This all-out rock ‘n’ roll fest has quite the line-up this year, with industrial heavyweight Nine Inch Nails, Mumford & Sons, The Killers 2-4 and Queens Of The Stone Age all set to perform over the three-day event. When you’re not rocking out, hit Chow Town, the festival’s mega food market, or take a stroll down eco-centre Green Street. AUGUST
WHY: Lollapalooza started life in 1991 as a farewell tour for rock band Jane’s Addiction. It continued as a roadshow festival through North America on and off until 2004, when it settled in Chicago’s Grant Park. Spin-off fests now also take place in Brazil and Chile, and an Israel event is planned for next year.

DO IT BECAUSE: If three days isn’t enough, or you missed some bands you wanted to catch, spend a week in Chicago afterwards. There are a whole raft of official Lollapalooza aftershows - gigs by the same performers but in more intimate gig venues around town.
Why? Who knows. This adults-only fest in Clinton, 1-5 Montana, revolves around eating bull’s testicles or ‘Rocky Mountain Oysters’ as they’re known. AUGUST

Outer limits: head into space, almost, for £95k
Got a spare £95,000? You could blow it on a hot air balloon ride that flies twice as high as Concorde – almost into space. Spanish company Zero2Infinity will be offering the ‘ëblooní’ experience to the Earth’s outer limits in two years’ time. During the journey, passengers will be taken in a six-person capsule (four tourists plus two pilots) which is tethered to a high-tech balloon. During the flight they’ll experience weightlessness and get a unique view of the world below. Annelie Schoenmaker, of Zero2Infinity, said: “Passengers will be able to see the sun and the stars at the same time, while looking down on the curvature of the Earth.”

qantas POrn Aussie airline Qantas has apologised after an eight-year-old boy saw a hardcore pornography image when he visited the company’s Facebook page. The boy’s angry father told Melbourne paper The Age: “Anatomical details were quite clearly recognisable.” A Qantas spokesman confirmed the image had been visible on the site: “Spam was posted to the Qantas Facebook page in the middle of the night, which included an inappropriate image the size of a profile picture. We removed the post as soon as we saw it and offered an apology to a gentleman who contacted us to complain.”
sydney too pricey Bit of a blow for Aussies last week – Sydney failed to make it into the Top 10 Cities list in the World’s Best Awards, because it’s now ‘too expensive’. The NSW capital came in at number 12 this year, its lowest ranking since hosting the Olympics in 2000. The awards, held by Travel & Leisure US, are based on readers’ ratings. Despite being Australia’s most popular city for tourism thanks to its beaches and city attractions, it took a hit for being considered low value-for-money. Due to the strength of the Australian dollar, it’s now one of the most expensive destinations in the world for visitors.
‘Drunks’ ruin hols British tourists organised a sit-in protest after complaining that locals spoiled their luxury beach holiday. At the Dominican Republic’s Club Hotel Riu Merengue, the guests accused a group of Dominican holidaymakers of being drunk and rowdy, pissing not only in the swimming pool, but also on sunloungers while people were lying on them. Apparently, they also ate all the buffet food. Enraged guest Tony Walton told the Mail Online that he and 160 complaining guests joined him in a protest camp out at the front desk for a day and a half. They were moved to another hotel.

Surf’s up Grab your board and head to the coast, where beautiful waves are just waiting to be caught WORDS HELEN ELFER
Finally the weather is officially gorgeous, and many of you will be itching to grab your board and hotfoot it to the nearest beach. Sadly, London’s not exactly the place to surf your socks off – but, never fear, just a matter of hours away from the Big Smoke are all sorts of hotspots where you can spend a weekend in the water. So choose from popular Cornish coves, secret Welsh bays or the booming scene in Scotland to get your surf on this summer. Rest Bay, Porthcawl, Wales SURF: There’s a small but dedicated scene here. Locals – a welcoming bunch – embrace the usually chilly weather and icy winds to make the most of the occasional days when Rest Bay produces terrific six-foot barrelling surf that rivals world-class European surfing locations. The rest of the time, there are enough smaller waves to get out in here or at one of the other nearby beaches, such as Sker, which is a well-shaped left-hand point break that runs out on to a nice beach break. What the area lacks in consistency, it makes up for elsewhere – beautiful Welsh setting, friendly atmosphere and not too crowded. NEARBY SCHOOLS? Take a lesson with Cressey’s Surf Academy which offers tuition to all levels from complete beginners to advanced surfers. It’s £30 for a two-hour lesson (cresseyssurfacademy.com). WHAT ELSE? There’s a great community feel in Porthcawl, with plenty of waterfront pubs and bars to grab a wellearned pint in while chatting to surf sceners after a day catching waves. BE THERE IN: Three hours 20 minutes from London. TRANSPORT: Take the train from London Paddington to Bridgend with First Great Western from £76pp return (firstgreatwestern.co.uk). Then it’s a 20-minute drive from Bridgend to Porthcawl.
Photos: Thinkstock; Getty
Sennen Cove, Cornwall, England SURF: The conditions here are some of the most consistent in the UK, with decent breaks and swell all year round. Sennen Cove is better protected from winds than other nearby locations, and you can expect good-sized waves even when other spots in the area are flat. The best time to go is when there’s a westerly swell and a light easterly wind, but no
matter what the conditions, there’s always decent surf and the green Cornish scenery as a backdrop to make a trip to the coast worthwhile. The only downside is how busy the cove gets at peak times. NEARBY SCHOOLS? The Sennen Surfing Centre takes lessons in the cove from £25 for two hours, or £100 for five days (sennensurfingcentre.com). WHAT ELSE? Quaint seaside shops selling ice cream and souvenirs give this place a proper summer holiday feel. BE THERE IN: Five hours 45 minutes from London. TRANSPORT: The train from London Paddington to Penzance takes 5hrs 30mins with First Great Western (firstgreatwestern.co.uk) from £113pp return. Then it’s a 15-minute taxi drive to Sennen Cove. Pease Bay, Borders, Scotland SURF: The Scots have a reputation for being a hardy bunch, so it’ll come as no surprise that the devastatingly cold North Sea is a considered a great place when the surf’s up. Pease Bay is at the heart of the booming surf scene here, with its beach break and challenging reef making it one of the most in-demand surfing hotpots in Scotland. NEARBY SCHOOLS? Contact Momentum Surf Shop, which organises lessons in Pease Bay or nearby Coldingham Bay, Seacliffs or Belhaven Bay depending on conditions. It’ll cost £35 for a three-hour session. Beginners and intermediate lessons are available (momentumsurfshop.com). WHAT ELSE? You can’t beat a walk along the stunning coastline and through the nearby woodlands. BE THERE IN: Two hours from London. TRANSPORT: Fly from London Southend to Edinburgh with easyJet (easyJet.com) from £52pp return. Then take a 25-minute train ride from the airport to the nearest rail station, Dunbar, with East Coast trains (eastcoast.co.uk) Edinburgh: Off to followed by a 15-minute Fringe? Read our taxi journey from here to guide on what Pease Bay. not to miss

DASHING KUDU Kenneth Boaler, Zimbabwe
EERIE EILEAN DONAN Jade Manderson, Perth Australia WHY IT WORKS This moody scene is of the iconic Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland, on a small island in the western Highlands. Jade tells us she prefers not to put the focus of her images in the centre, and takes advice from her best friend on the rule of threes. But here, she says: “I have just been lucky enough to be able to look at something and think ‘that would be a great photo’.” She adds: “The castle was really picturesque as the clouds gave it great lighting but also made it look a bit eerie.”
WHY IT WORKS On a self-drive safari in Zimbabwe, which Kenneth says he can’t recommend highly enough, he spotted a herd of kudu. “The male kudu dashed across the road and the rest of the herd followed him,” he tells us. “The grass on the side was quite thick so they were jumping quite high to get over it. I flicked my camera into sports mode and shot them as they dashed across the road.” The kudu pictured is a female, and is a classic case of quality on-the-fly wildlife photography. Thanks Kenneth.

Brighton
If you hail from Down Under, the temperature reaching 27°C in the UK might not scream ‘scorching’ summer to you. But, be warned, when the mercury hits the 20s, this country gets overexcited. We’re talking straw hats, ice-cream cones, warm beers (Brits don’t really ‘get’ stubby holders), shirts off (the men), lobster pink sunburn, sticky sun lotion bottles ... the works. Resistance is futile. You might as well join in, and embrace the Great British Summer. Here’s how it’s done. The first thing you need to do is join the crowds and head to the seaside. And, at just 40 minutes away by train, the obvious choice is Brighton. First on your itinerary should be Brighton Pier (brightonpier.co.uk) for a ride on the fairground – try the Turbo Coaster and Crazy Mouse rollercoasters, followed by a pointless attempt to win teddies in the arcade. Given up (and hopefully not lost more than a fiver)? Then grab a 99 ice-cream (one with a chocolate flake) with extra raspberry sauce from one of the countless number of vans, and 64 00

wander down to the beach. If you’re lucky, you might find a few square metres of pebbly beach to lay down your towel, listen to the seagulls and sizzle in the sun – or sit on a stripy deckchair in true British style. Go for a splash about in the ever-chilly English Channel whenever it gets too hot. If you’re not much of a sunbather, meander around The Lanes instead, where you’ll find a network of narrow streets lined with organic cafes, knickknack stalls, antique shops and all sorts of hippy stores. Alternatively, the lavish Royal Pavilion, with its Anglo-Chinese design is worth a visit (entry £9.80). When the sun starts setting, there’s only one way to end a perfect day trip – head back to the pier, grab a bag of traditional fish n chips from Harry Ramsden’s (harryramsdens.co.uk) and eat them on the beach with a few tinnies. Textbook summer day out. visitbrighton.co.uk

St Ives
This is a classic British seaside destination, with four main beaches, a picturesque harbour and an artistic reputation. It’s a particularly good choice if you’re not that interested in just lying about on the sand, as there’s so much more to do here, including surfing and watersports, wandering the narrow cobbled streets, checking out the independent art galleries and dropping into the historic ale pubs. stives-cornwall.co.uk

Blackpool
Anyone living in England has to have at least one summer holiday in Blackpool, come rain or shine. Hit the the famous Pleasure Beach and go for a ride on the rollercoasters (try the Big One and its 63-metre drop, the tallest in the UK), the tower (a poor man’s Eiffel), plus it’s also obligatory to ride on a donkey, smiling goofily for the camera with a melting ice cream in your hand. Yes, even if you’re over the age of ten. Pick up some stripy rock to eat on the way home, too. visitblackpool.com

Torquay
Don’t snigger. Torquay is a perfectly nice place to spend a sunny day or two – it’s not called the English Riviera for nothing. We said don’t snigger! By day, hit the beach, or take a tour of the ‘Agatha Christie Mile’, where you’ll see a stretch of town with plaques dedicated to the life and work of the writer who lived here. And, by night – well this is where it really all gets going, as the nightlife here is notorious for being rather raucous. englishriviera.co.uk
5
Bournemouth
Arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in England, Bournemouth’s seven miles of yellow sand is the ideal place to spend a hot weekend. Don’t forget to bring an enormous hamper packed with potato salad, melted chocolate biscuits and tinfoilwrapped tuna-mayo sarnies (these are the key components of an authentic British picnic) to eat on the beach. And don’t leave without posing for a cheesy picture by the giant deckchair sculpture. Facebook gold. bournemouth.co.uk

coledale inn overview This beautifully located hotel sits a mere stone’s throw from the town of Keswick in the outdoor activity-hunter’s dreamland of the Lake District, Cumbria. A Montenegro is a great summer destination, with unspoilt beaches and pretty villages. There is one airline that flies direct from the UK to Montenegro, Montenegro Airlines (montenegroairlines.com), which runs services direct from London Gatwick to both of the country’s airports, Tivat and Podgorica. You can also consider Dubrovnik as Montenegro’s unofficial third airport, as it’s only 17km from the border, offers a much better choice of flights and is actually closer to the popular resort town of Herceg Novi than the national airports. Flying into Dubrovnik will in
fact work particularly well if you are planning to hire a car to explore Montenegro. The must-sees include the pretty coastal old town of Budva and Lake Skadar National Park – the largest lake in the Balkans which is home to a large pelican colony. Head inland to the Lovcen National Park to see Crna Gora, the mountain which gives Montenegro (which literally translates to ‘black mountain’) its name. Finally, the picture-perfect bay at Kotor is a great area to base your holiday, with a selection of coves and old towns lining this stunning inlet. For a special occasion, you could splash out on a night on the exclusive resort island of Sveti Stefan. If that’s way beyond your budget (the cheapest suite in high season is around £780) eat at one of the resort’s restaurants instead.
Should travellers be avoiding Istanbul at the moment? Absolutely not. Istanbul is safe and all are welcome. Visitors should explore the old and new town – both are beautiful. Best place for adventure holidays? Oludeniz would be my pick. There are so many adventure activities available such as jeep safari, paragliding, scuba diving, river rafting, trekking.. Top Turkish dish to try? That’s a hard question because Turkey is a foodie’s paradise. However Alinazik kebap is definitely one my favourites. It is roasted eggplant and yoghurt with meat and tomato sauce. Your favourite place? The definite highlights are Istanbul, Cappadocia and Pamukkale.

Floating on Aare Taxis and trains don’t compare to the power of gentle rapids along Switzerland’s scenic River Aare – hardly any paddling required Words Caroline Bishop
My eyebrows shoot up as I look out from my hotel window, expecting a serene, flawless Swiss morning scene, and instead see two bare bums. It seems my travelling companions have crept out for an early dip in Lake Brienz, sans swimmers. It’s certainly in the spirit of things. We’ve come to Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland region to experience the great outdoors, so a skinny dip is only appropriate. And it’s the perfect day to be at one with nature. Lit up by the morning sun, the lake is so placid it reflects a mirror image of the mountains that loom on the opposite shore, verdant forests of green running down their flanks. It’s mountains such as these – including the famously mighty Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau – that give this tiny landlocked country its abundance of water. Lakes and rivers are swelled with glacial meltwater at this time of year, so while the Swiss may not have an ocean at their disposal, they do have the River Aare, a watery playground that offers a heap of activities. With our swimmers firmly on, today we’re planning to float down the 30km stretch of the river that will takes us from the north-west tip of Lake Thun to Bern. This is a particularly popular section, says Ruedi Jaisli of Zurich-based activity company Swiss Trails, who has organised our trip. “The water here is extremely clear and pure, because the river passes through two lakes where all the sediments can settle so it becomes very clean, so much so that you could even drink it.” What’s more, the two lakes warm up the glacial meltwater, meaning the water temperature on the Thun to Bern stretch can reach 24˚C in July and August. Consequently, the river is heaving with rafters and swimmers in summer, letting the naturally fast-flowing water (it runs at around 8km an hour) take them downstream with minimal effort – you don’t even need to paddle. “We bring our own inflatable boats, fill one with beers and supplies, tie them all together and drift downstream,” says 32-year-old Matt Radmore, an English expat living in Switzerland. “You can stop on the riverbank and have a barbecue, and go for a swim when you get too hot.” We don’t have our own raft, but Thun-based hire company Aare Bootsvermietung can help with that, and they also provide us with a barrel to keep our belongings dry.
They even promise to collect the boat from Bern when we’re done, making this a hassle-free one-way trip. We hop in and let the vivid turquoise water start carrying us along. Looking back upstream, I can see the mountains where it came from, still impressively snowy even though it’s more than 20°C down here.
“
The Swiss swim to the office, clothes in a bag
”
Though this isn’t a white water river, the current is fast enough to provide a few thrills. At light rapids called the Uttiger Schnelle I shriek when I see the churning water to the left, like a washing machine on extra rinse. I quickly realise that steering isn’t my strong point, after being smacked by ›› low-hanging branches on the riverbank.

Drama over, we spot see the first of Bern’s 18 bridges, signalling our approach to the capital. On a hot summer’s weekend the water is covered with locals – some even commute to work using the river, with clothes in a dry bag. “You can imagine how much fun it is,” Jaisli says. “Instead of being squeezed into the subway you swim down a river to your office.” We pull out of the river at Eichholz, a grassy area on the outskirts of the city for picnicking and lounging – the Bernese certainly know how to make the most of the Aare. And as we soon find out, even their famous bears don’t miss out. The symbol of the city (they feature on its coat of arms), bears have been kept in the Swiss capital for 500 years, and since 2009 have living in a grassy enclosure on the banks of the Aare, complete with their own pretty dipping pool. As we pack up our rafting gear, I only hope this beautiful river gives the Bern bears even a little of the pleasure that the city’s residents clearly get from it. ❚ Raft hire from Aare Bootsvermietung costs £7pp aarebootsvermietung.chw

After watching the hourly display by Bern’s famous 16th-century mechanical clock, the Zytglogge, stop in at nearby Adriano’s Bar & Cafe for the best coffee in town, plus draught beer from £3.50 for a half-pint (as we said, not cheap). adrianos.ch

Flashpacking – is it worth it? Fed up with ice-cold showers, dirty dorms and a diet of banana pancakes? Here’s how to upgrade your backpacking style Words Helen Elfer
Love eating street food, but can’t stand sharing hostel dorms? Up for a second-class train journey, but refuse to be without your MacBook Air? Prepared to wear the same jeans every day for a month but can’t face a cold shower? Sounds like you might just be a bit of a flashpacker. Flashpackers love the traditional back-to-basics travelling style, but are prepared to fork out that little extra for certain creature comforts or once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Some like to up their whole budget just a smidge, others prefer to mix high- and low-end experiences as they go. Here, TNT gives you the lowdown on where it’s worth really splashing the cash, and where to save your pennies. Bangkok, Thailand BACKPACK IT: You’ll be headed straight for one of the most famous backpacking streets in the world – the one and only Khao San Road. Every backpacking cliché can be fulfilled here – getting a temporary tattoo, hippy braids, beer slogan T-shirts, silver jewellery, the works. Or you can just hit the bars, get smashed on Sangsom rum and make some new travel buddies. Whatever you do here, it won’t cost you too much – dorm beds can be had for a fiver and drinks from £1.50. In fact, the prices on Khao San Road itself can be a little inflated, but wander the surrounding streets and you’ll find endless little drinking dens and cafes. FLASHPACK IT: Is there a glamorous side to Bangkok? You betcha. There’s a trend for seriously swanky rooftop cocktail bars that give you stunning views over the cityscape, and while they might be expensive, it’s worth forking out to experience that hard-to-beat breathtaking panorama. So scrub off the backpacking grit and grime for just one evening and head up to Skybar (there’s a no flip-flops, smart casual dress code; lebua.com/sky-bar). Bag a table and take in the stunning 360-degree views from this bar on the 63rd floor of The Dome at the swanky Lebua State Tower, making it one of the highest in the world. Now, ready for the bill? It’s £10 a cocktail. Perhaps just the one then... VERDICT: Backpack. There’s plenty of budget fun on offer in Bangkok to keep your travel costs low and still have a blast. GET THERE: Fly from London Heathrow to Bangkok from £849pp with British Airways (britishairways.com).
Siem Reap Cambodia BACKPACK IT: Angkor Wat will be top of your must-do list, and at £13.50, the entrance fee won’t break the bank. As for food and accommodation costs, these are really rock bottom – a casual meal of rice or noodles costs as little as £1. FLASHPACK IT: One activity worth splashing the cash on is a quad biking tour. You’ll follow a guide as you motor around the lesser-visited temples and remote villages, where you’ll see a side of the countryside lots of travellers miss. A full day tour will set you back around £110pp with Quad Adventure Cambodia (quad-adventure-cambodia.com). VERDICT: Definitely backpack. You don’t need to spend a lot here to be very comfortable. And since Cambodia is an extremely poor country, if you’ve got extra cash to blow, why not donate it to a charity or NGO? Many are listed at Charity Vault (charity-charities.org). GET THERE: Fly from London Heathrow to Phnom Penh from £833pp return with Qatar Airways (qatarairways.com). ››

Ancient: (clockwise from here) Cambodia’s Angkor Wat; backpacking or flashpacking; Chichen Itza; the morning after in Goa Goa, India BACKPACK IT: Goa has been drawing in the hippiest of backpackers for decades, here to wear cotton trousers and beads, laze around in bamboo beach bars during the day, and head to Anjuna for raves by night. Naysayers grumble that the scene’s not what it once was, but screw ‘em – you could still spend weeks here living the hippy dream, staying in cheap hostels (from less than £5pn) and enjoying the beautiful beaches and easygoing atmopshere. FLASHPACK IT: Goa now also has a whole raft of very upmarket resorts – the likes of Kate Moss, Jade Jagger and other celebs take holidays here. If you want a little taste of luxury, fork out for a Goan meal, fine dining-style at the stylish Leela Goa’s restaurant Jamavar (theleela.com). It’ll set you back about £30 per head without wine. VERDICT: Backpack all the way here – if beautiful beaches, swaying palms and amazing fish curries aren’t enough for you, then what is? GET THERE: Fly from London Heathrow to Goa, via Mumbai from £740pp return with British Airways (britishairways.com).
cave and cavern dive systems in the world, and you’ll get the chance to gawp at the surreal stalagmites and stalactites underwater. One-day trips from £97 with Cavern Diving Mexico (caverndivingmexico.com). VERDICT: It’s worth splashing out a little flashpacking here – as long as you’re spend on memorable experiences, rather than dropping a fortune in pricey bars. GET THERE: Fly from London Gatwick to Cancun from £594pp return with Virgin Atlantic (virgin-atlantic.com). ››
Cancun, Mexico BACKPACK IT: There are countless backpacking routes through Mexico, taking in the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, the art city of Oaxaca, the Sierra Madre mountains ... but, for lots of backpackers, all roads eventually lead to Cancun for hard partying and tequila shot slamming. It’s also a great place for sampling authentic Mexican food – get tacos and quesadillas from £1.50. FLASHPACK IT: Don’t blow your spare cash in the pricier bars, instead fork out on a scuba diving expedition. A short drive south from Cancun, the Riviera Maya Cenotes are the longest 74

Rome, Italy BACKPACK IT: Anyone who read about the recent furore over Rome’s gelato (four British tourists charged £54 for four ice-cream cones) knows it’s not a cheap city. You’ll want to get in, see everything on your ticklist and then get out before you start bouncing cheques. Check out St Peter’s Basilica, the Pantheon, Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain for free. As for accommodation, you don’t get much for your money as just a dorm bed will cost around £15-£20. FLASHPACK IT: The costs are going to add up while you’re here. Entrance to the Colosseum is around £13.50, as is the National Museum Of Modern art and the Vatican Museum. As for the bars and restaurants – the sky’s the limit in terms of prices, so make sure you stay away from the more touristy areas when eating out. VERDICT: Definitely a place for flashpackers. You’ll spend big just seeing all the key sights. And budget a fair bit for food otherwise you’ll end up chowing down on pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner. GETTING THERE: Fly from London Gatwick to Rome from £134 return with easyJet (easyjet.com). Barcelona, Spain BACKPACK IT: To get the most for your money, pick up a Barcelona Card (barcelonacard.neoturismo.com) for £28.50 which will get you unlimited public transport, plus entry into heaps of museums and galleries, and a free waterfront cruise on Las Golondrinas. And, of course, there are plenty of golden-sandy beaches to while away the days on. FLASHPACK IT: Boy is it possible to drop a lot of money on drinking in Barcelona. Many of the bars and clubs are around the city’s most famous street, La Ramblas, where you can watch entertaining street performers and soak up the busy vibe. The catch? Drinks can cost more than £5 a pop, and club entrance fees up to £20. VERDICT: If you’ve decided to blow your budget on a night out, might as well be here. Flashpack it! Post your message at tntmagazine.com/seeking or email seeking@tntmagazine.com. – let’s do that again! I’ll be there this Saturday afternoon, maybe for a second time I can spill my wine over you? You are hard to find in this big city! Mae C donor drop off: London men, I need your sperm. Qualifications: tall, excellent math skills, punctuality, good knee cartilage, open mind to questionable cooking, and dreamy eyes. Please leave baby gravy in sealed jars or zip-locked baggies
cuddle against your will? For a safe, innuendo free, movie-watching environment please contact me. Feel free to bring your own movie! Also, because I don’t have a DVD player or a flat, we should probably just go to your place. Every time you reach up and grab the bar for balance, millions of rank microparticles leave the Kraken that is your underarm and attack our innocent nostrils. Must you force us to marinate your toxic, gaseous discharge from hell? Isha movie mate: Ladies, do you like movies without the pressure of a swinging arm nestling you into a
you, you’re probably oozing with insecurities. She can smell it on you. No amount of cheap pints and expired condoms can save you from your own inferiority complex. Troy messy nights: Lucy, did you manage to find your dignity on the way out of the Walkie? I think I last saw it being rammed down the throat of that hunky lad I told you I like – or was that your tongue? Either way, our friendship is over. P wax love: Dear mystery man of my dreams. I saw you at the Camden Town Tube station picking your ears, giving the unearthed
contents a deep, thoughtful investigation, then eating them. I was bewitched. I could have sworn I was the only one. And the way you do it – throwing shame, health and societal standards into the wind – it was too much! Call me. Forever yours, Beth let down: Eee by gum by heck as like, Jenny, Jenny, Jenny! Did you? Did you really? Karl The Creep? The dude who stole Paul’s goldfish. The bloke who hid his ex-girlfriend’s passport so she couldn’t come on my hen do. Karl The Creep. You haven’t just let me down, yourself down, Paul down, Paul’s goldfish down, you’ve let all of womankind down. Clare tedious lies: Jen, last night was really special. I know Clare says she’s writing to TNT about it to shame you. But don’t let her get to you. Her insides are made of plywood and she has no aspirations. I know the tedious lies she’ll repeat, and that’s all they are: lies! I need you to know I’ve loved you for almost as long as I’ve known you. I want to make this work. Karl fishy tale: Jen. Paul. I’ve heard Clare is writing to TNT about you and Karl, and Karl told me he’s writing, too. Look, Jen, do what you want, but you have to know something, it’s true about Karl – he stole my goldfish. He was kipping on my sofa, I went to bed, I woke up, the fish were gone. I still don’t know what he did with them. If that’s the kind of man you want to be with, that’s your call. Paul

You’re the nuts: Ben, your invitation/idea sounds awesome, although, I think you could take it one step further and turn it into a flashmob! Have hundreds of people get in the trees and as soon as some type of squirrel music or song comes on you can fall out and do a squirrel dance while throwing either a bag of nuts or just a nut to all the onlookers. They get entertainment and a free meal, who knows you may even get a job from it :) Jess too chicken: You were sitting on a bench outside St Paul’s eating a chicken and avocado sandwich. So was I. Couldn’t think of anything to say except ‘snap’ and you pretended you hadn’t heard. Can we try again next Friday? I’ll have thought up some witty banter by then. Peter flying low: Kev, invest in some new jeans. Your zip hasn’t stayed up once this week, and I’ve seen navy and white stripes, Bart Simpson and some dodgy love hearts all peeking out at various points. Don’t even want to talk about what I saw on Thurs. Sort it or I’ll report you to HR. Allison vomcano: A blue, chunky pile of vom was in the loo when I woke up on Tues, Gemma. By Weds, there had only been a quick flush and evidence of the most cursory of wipes in the surrounding area. Given your taste for Wetherspoons cocktail jugs, I suspect you. One more strike and you’re out. Val wino times: To the sexy man who says he is 35 that got us both kicked out of a bar on Saturday
