Halloween horrors From immersive theatre to scare you shitless to classic ghost stories and Halloween stand-up, London has it all Words alasdair morton The scariest night of the year is about to hit London, with all manner of haunted, spooky goings on happening across the city this Halloween. But don’t worry, if you are faint of heart, there are less terrifying ways to celebrate if scaring the crap out of yourself is not top of your list of priorities. If you do want your Halloween to be full of fear, though, you best get yourself down to one of the Ghost Bus Tours that take in the most haunted sights of London aboard a creeped out Routemaster bus. “It’s a theatrical sightseeing tour of London – a comedy horror show on a bus,” explains Ghost Bus Tours creative director Peter Davis. “You see the sights and learn about London’s ghosts and horrible history while experiencing a theatre show – on a haunted bus. There are a lot of people out there who love spooky creepy comedy but also who want to see London’s amazing sights, so we decided to do just that!” The tour takes in some of the most feared, horrific sights and destinations in London, and with the rich and varied history of this city, there is no shortage 6

of ghoulish goings on to uncover. “The Tower of London is one of the scariest places in London,” Davis says. “With over 20 recorded ghosts, it’s statistically the most haunted place in Britain. So many awful things happened there over the years – murder, torture, executions – that some of the poor victims appear to still be there. I certainly wouldn’t want to spend a night there alone!” Getting on board a haunted bus to visit some of the most haunted places in London is certainly a nerve-wracking experience. For some, it would seem, it’s just a little too much to handle. “We’ve often had people crying during the tour, some hysterics and even people asking us to pull the bus over so they can get off as they were too scared,” Davis says of some of the reactions they have had from people who were not up to the challenge. “We get asked if it is too scary for children,” he offers, somewhat reassuringly. “But it all depends on the individual – we have had some kids who giggle through the whole thing and grown adults who can’t handle it! It is a comedy show, but we do make

sure there are some ghoulish treats in store, too – perfect for Halloween!” If you’d rather not give your nerves such a workout, there are a wealth of other events taking place across town, such as a series of seminars and exhibitions at Bart’s Pathology Museum which take a look at the human body and that which has been done to it. This Wednesday sees A Potted History Of The Pot, which looks at the collecting of human body parts, with other events including a look at taxidermy (Oct 26) and Necropolis (Oct 30) which looks at London and its dead, as well as a talk all about shrunken heads (Nov 2). And if you want to keep this Halloween really traditional, don a spine-chilling fancy dress outfit and go trick or treating! Happy Halloween! ❚ MORE HALLOWEEN EVENTS ›› Ghost Bus Tours. Snug-gle: Get a warm hug from the Morgan Arms this winter

Pub

As we bid a fond farewell to England’s rather splendid summer our thoughts turn to cosy nights in the pub, with homely, hearty food to warm ourselves from the inside out. The perfect spot in which to do just this is The Morgan Arms in East London. A warm wood bar, stripped-back tables and leather armchairs teamed with deep plum and burgundy walls ensure the cosiness, while the short but seriously good menu ensures the rest. We’re not the only ones who seem to think so as this pub has been buzzing on all of our previous visits. The grub This is a favourite spot for Sunday lunch thanks to its killer roasts. Otherwise, the ever-changing menu features gorgeous pasta, fish and meat dishes, each with added flair such as fennel and aioli crostini, beurre noisette shrimp and parmesan velute, which, along with the high standard of cooking, elevates The Morgan Arms’ grub to gourmet standards. THE SCENE

With a long wine list, including New World wines and even organic champagne, you can have a sophisticated tipple with your dinner. Failing that, they pull a mean pint too. Bill please Small glass of wine from £3.90, cocktails from £5. Mains around £10 for lunch, £15 for dinner. verdict Good buzz, great food, friendly staff – what more do you want people? Old fashioned: dishes from yesteryear with a contemporary flavour

cheese and champers The kind folk behind Covent Garden’s Champagne + Fromage are taking their gloriously simple idea south of the river to the increasingly up-andcoming haven of Brixton, fast making a name for itself amongst foodies. The bistro bar and deli will focus on bubbly from small producers and French grub at its new Brixton Village store which opened on Oct 15. frenchbubbles.co.uk/Champagne-Fromage

food, fun and fashion The much-loved Cabbages and Frocks market (below) will be bringing a little healthy food to its usual array of food and fashion stylings with a programme of chef demos and tastings as well. Next Saturday Oct 26) will see Good Food Month honoured with grub that is tasty and good for you, with all kinds of organic loveliness to be found.

Retro Feasts BRITISH

cabbagesandfrocks.co.uk

Celebrity chef, 19-year-old Luke Thomas, who was the star of the BBC documentary Britain’s Youngest Head Chef, is the brains behind this retro-themed pop-up restaurant that takes you back to the dishes of your childhood, only with a contemporary and five-star presentation spin. Inside this Mayfair venue, it’s a cornucopia of colour, as reds, whites and blues take prominence amid design that harks back to the Seventies and Eighties. Punked up prints of the Queen adorn the walls, with a ping pong table taking pride of place next to the bar for a spot of post-dining gaming. The grub To venture back to our formative years, and the dishes we loved the most, we start with a giant prawn cocktail, and cheese and pineapple which, rather than coming out on a stick as we remembered it, is presented as a goats cheese and pineapple pastry, and a tasty one at that. For mains we plump for gammon egg and pineapple, a tender slice of school years dinner recollection, and a steak supper, which is a fab slice of rump steak with fries and a top peppercorn sauce. For desserts, we can’t pass up the black forest gateau, a layered pot of chocolatey goodness that, thankfully, bears little resemblance to the frozen cake of the past, and an Eton Mess, which comes loaded with cream and strawberry delights. Top. THE SCENE

going for gold Olympic Studios, the famous Soho recording studios that played host to the likes of Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones and Madonna in its time, opened last week as a smart and stylish cafe and dining room. It will be offering a seasonal British menu with European influences and will be open for brekkie, lunch and dinner offering everything from sandwiches and pastries to roasts and lavish main courses. It will also encompass a cinema and private members’ club, too, so you can join up and get your swank on.

Famed for its cocktails, which are ordered themed as retro favourites, those ‘from the sweet shop’ and the Retro Feasts signature concoctions, of which we sample two. First up is the Thyme for a Collins (Hendrick’s, Krupnik, thyme syrup and prosecco), which comes served in a stylish jar, and a Earl of Mayfair, its Earl Grey-infused Beefeater 24 gin coming with Lillet Rouge and grapefruit juice, and arriving in a none-more-British tea cup. Bill please Cocktails from £8.50; beers from £4; snacks from £5; starters from £8.50; mains from £12.50; desserts from £5. verdict It’s fun, frivolous and full of charm – a total winner. am Behind the bar

Bequiffed: Monkeys frontman Alex Turner at Glasto this year

AlASDAIR MORTON for the record Sinead O’Connor criticised Myley Cyrus and her twerking, and now Charlotte Church has weighed in on the debate, slamming them both. Church, who had been speaking at last week’s third annual John Peel Lecture in London, talked about how the music industry is at great pains to sexualise women, adding how displeased she was with the “online pissing contest” between the two aforementioned artists. “To my mind, what this industry seems to want of its women increasingly is sex objects that appear childlike” she said, criticising Rihanna as well. Now we like a good slanging match as much as the next person, especially when it is between two totally opposite artists as O’Connor and Cyrus, but Church, who rose to fame as a child star so knows a thing or two, has hit the nail on the worryingly-accurate head. Good for her and shame on a dodgy-moral-holding music industry.

arctic monkeys Earl’s Court, SW5 9TA Oct 25 & 26 | Doors at 6pm | £40+

The Monkeys burst forth on to the scene back in 2006 with I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and their debut LP Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I Am Not. Since then, though, they’ve gone from talented, cheeky young upstarts to bona fide rock stars – not bad for a bunch of boys from Sheffield. Their debut was an observant slice of youth in the Noughties indie, capturing the trials and tribulations of their hometown lives. It also, though, was shot through with musicianship and songwriting that marked them as different to their contemporaries, and in Alex Turner, they had a lyricist who transcended the usual pitfalls of both indie and first album storytelling. It was an instant classic and sold by the bucketloads to become the fastest-selling debut album in British music history, hitting the top spot in the UK and Oz charts. Since this pivotal moment for British guitar music, the boys have moved on. Team ups with the likes of P-Diddy have followed suit (drummer James Helders drummed on his Dirty Money project), they adopted a rockabilly vibe complete with leather jackets and quiffs that were a far cry from the streetwear composition of their earlier days (Helders even has his own clothing line now, too), and have been hanging out with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, who’s been involved with both their Humbug (2008) and AM (2012) albums. This year they played a barnstorming – or should that be Brian-storming? – headline gig at Glastonbury and will be bringing that big arena vibe to London. Earl’s Court

Five alive! Once the rebels of the manufactured boyband scene, Five are back, as four, and they’re gigging in London Words andrew westbrook

Once upon a time (let’s call it the 90s), a new breed of being seemed to rule the world. The charts were dominated by their sudden key changes, chat shows were blinded by their white suits and gossip mags swooned over their often ambiguous sexuality. They were called boybands and there was no defeating them. Sure, the concept of manufactured music was nothing new, and still hasn’t gone anywhere, but this was the time of Take That, Boyzone and Westlife – it was the era of no escape. Into that mix came the brash and outspoken, but no less manufactured, whirlwind that was the Spice Girls. Their alternative approach, you could say, was fairly successful, leading their creators to think the feat could be repeated with a male cast. And so, in 1997, following an audition of 3000 hopefuls, including a rejected Russell Brand, Five was born. A boyband, but not as we knew it.

‘We were uncontrollable’ “I think they might have controlled us for about two days when we first got together,” the band’s youngest member, Sean Conlon, now 32, tells us. “It all went out the window straight after that. I think that was our magic really, we were kind of uncontrollable. A lot of boybands basically do what they’re told and that’s what makes them successful – after all, not all these labels are the devil, they know what they’re doing – but we didn’t always do what we were told. We definitely made some mistakes.” Mistakes or not, the rebellious bad boy reputation of Five (or 5ive as they were then) helped them make it big, and fast. A string of hits like Slam Dunk (Da Funk) and When The Lights Go Out meant their debut album went straight in at number one in the UK. And yet it was just three years later, after a trio of hit albums and more than 10 million records sold, that the boys went their separate ways. Since then they’ve had one failed attempt at a comeback (in 2006) and Leeds-born Conlon (who wasn’t involved in the first reunion) had an embarrassing time on reality show The Voice. But that was all before another reality show, The Big Reunion, started airing in the UK at the start of 2013. Featuring Five (without original band member Jason Brown), the programme also brought back other pop acts from the era – think Blue, 911, Liberty X, Atomic Kitten, B*Witched and Honeyz. It was a huge success, resurrecting

long-abandoned careers all over the place. So was it weird meeting those bands again after all those years? “Not really,” explains Conlon. “We didn’t mix that much with all the other bands back in the day because we were so busy. It’s nostalgic in the sense that they were all familiar faces, but we didn’t really know them.”So how about now? Are they all best buds? “When you first meet people in bands, they’ve always got a persona, so when we first all met [for the show] there was a lot of bullshit. But gradually you spend time together, people start hanging around in their jogging bottoms and having a drink. So yeah, we all know each other well now.”

The young ones And are they calmer now they’re in their 30s, I ask? As teenagers, the anti-boyband were famously wild, with the likes of Neville (now a Sydney bar owner) particularly famous for sleeping with half the female population (OK, we may be exaggerating). “It’s definitely true that I was a tearaway teenager,” explains Conlon. “But I got things out ››

Five, during their ill-fated first reunion, in 2006, without Conlon. That'll learn 'em of my system when I was young, you know like drinking and partying. By the time I got in the band, I was over a lot of it. I’m pretty glad it happened that way around as god knows what would have happened to me being in a boyband when I was 15, 16, 17 and discovering all that stuff. “I was the youngest [in the group] but also the most self-controlled and self-assured.” And it’s not hard to believe as, chatting on the phone, Conlon comes across as relaxed, funny and genuinely down to earth. Also honestly delighted that the band is a success once again. Does it feel good to be back in the game, I ask? Especially considering the pressures of fame are what caused the band’s fifth member, Jason Brown, to walk away. “It’s been a long time out of the public eye so coming back was very intense, very surreal,” says Conlon. “But you start to rely on the experience and it becomes strangely normal. You just fit back in you know. Obviously I don’t want to degrade from what [Jason] said about how he didn’t want to be famous, but I don’t really know. “The first time I left the band it was about having spent so many years of my teens in Five. I was the kid who never found out who he was, so at 20, I set out on my own. When they were wanting to get back together the first time [in 2006], I was still in the middle of that process. It wasn’t the right time for me. But we’re all a lot older now you know. We’re all men now.”

Keeping it real And now he’s a man, what does he think about the current crop of boybands? Does he wish groups like One Direction could be as open as Five were? ”Ah, they’re a different type of band,” starts Conlon. “You know, if you had a kid and they like One Direction, it wouldn’t bother you too much, 16

tntMagazine.com

would it?” So, does that mean he wouldn’t want kids of his to follow a band like Five? “Ha, I definitely would, because we were real life, you know? We said things, we made mistakes, we weren’t always perfect. There’s nothing wrong with One Direction, but you know I don’t think there’s anything wrong with kids looking up to [bands like Five] and seeing that that’s how life is. That’s part of who kids are.”

Onwards and upwards The subject we keep returning to, however, is the resurgence of Five. And not because Conlon is a well-oiled PR machine. He’s clearly still coming to terms with the fact that he’s doing well enough again to even have to be doing PR. “It’s incredible,” he tells me. “You just said to me about how the comeback has been really successful and in that moment I just had to sort of brace myself and stop myself for a moment, because it actually has been successful. To be honest, it’s amazing. We don’t take it for granted at all so it really is amazing. “Being sat here, talking about how we’re going to jump on a plane [the lads are heading to Australia] and go to the other side of the world to sing and do some music – it’s just phenomenal really. I love travelling anyway, so the fact I can do that for a living with music, well, it couldn’t be better really. “I hope we can stay together. I’d love to make new music, but we’re just taking it one step at time at the moment. It’s about getting back to where we were, putting some things right and enjoying the old songs.” ❚ FIve play Eventim Apollo – 45 Queen Caroline Street, Hammersmith, W6 9QH – on Dec 4. The comedian and backpacker on his new show The A-Z Of Backpacking about his experiences travelling the world INTERVIEW alasdair morton

What fuelled your desire to go backpacking? I talk about this in the show. What makes us want to drop everything and venture into the unknown. For me, life got a bit stale. Nothing was really happening with my comedy career, the day job was boring. In a poetic kind of way, I was dreaming of the world outside of the UK. What was the most dangerous moment of your backpacking experience? Without a doubt, getting lost in San Salvador, El Salvador [which is] notorious for gangs. I ended up on my own in some small run down village – people gave me the weirdest looks. I ended up asking some guy, who was wearing a vest top I later discovered was concealing two guns, directions to the bus station. “Ere mate” I said in my Bristolian accent “Do you know where the bus station is like?”. He looked at me confused – I don’t think he had heard a Bristolian accent before – and then calmly gave me directions. What are your favourite places you have been to? Guatemala [because of the] beautiful landscapes, super friendly people, cheap accommodation and it not being so commercial – yet! And India which is a truly sensory experience. It’s a magical, mind blowing place with amazing cuisine and a fascinating culture which begs you to go back to discover more. Which places failed to live up to your expectations? Thailand. It’s gone downhill. It so expensive and you don’t get value for your money. It’s almost that the country is so popular now the Thai people don’t need to deliver on customer service and quality as much anymore as the people keep on coming. I couldn’t wait to leave. What were the most annoying types of traveller you have bumped into? Has to be the loud, bragging, know-it-all ones. The traveller who has done it all – wherever you have been to is not as good as where they have. They also talk loudly on long bus journeys boasting about their experiences on the unbeaten path. Along the lines of: “I literally was taken in and treated like a fellow

Travel tales: Jody shares his backpacking stories Mayan tribesman. I became one of them. I even learned the language but I have forgotten it now though”. Then there’s the spiritual seekers in India, the yoga fanatics, trying to be this calm, centred, god-like person, wearing brightcoloured, hippy clothing bearing the Indian gods and using words like energy, flow and universe in every other sentence.

Atitlan in Guatemala. It’s a stunning volcanic crater lake, full of mystery and beauty. I actually was shown land by an estate agent when I revisited four years ago. I had no money to buy it but I just liked the idea of buying it. I told the agent I would plant banana and coffee trees and I am trying to convince my wife that this is a great idea.

Which one moment or experience do you most fondly remember? It has to be with Keith the Chocolate Shaman. A Texan who’d moved to Guatemala. He was an amazing person dedicated to freeing people from all the crap in their lives. He does this by using raw organic chocolate. Sounds completely bonkers, but it totally works. I’m sure have heard that chocolate in ancient Mayan times was a “food of the gods”. Well, chocolate has natural endorphins and when in its purest, organic form and drunk in high concentration, it sends you to a happy place.

What are the pros and cons of travelling solo in your experience? [The pros are] freedom to travel where you want, when you want and meeting a ton of new people you wouldn’t normally be friends with. The cons are occasional periods of loneliness and never being able to laugh and share ‘that time when…’ stories with your friends when you are back home.

Do you think you might hang up your pack and settle down one day, and if so where would it be? I am not sure I would ever stop travelling. I suppose the day I have children, I will slow down but in the spirit of the Norwegians, I will throw the baby on the backpack and hike away. I constantly dream of settling down in Lago de

What is the most important piece of advice you would give someone embarking on their own adventure? Go with the flow and see where you end up, don’t stick to an itinerary, relax and don’t worry about trying to see everything. I have had some of the best times when they were unplanned. Secrets exposed: the story of WikiLeaks and Julian Assange

the fifth estate FILM review Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch | 15 | 128mins | Out now

ender’s game FILM Starring: Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield | 12A | 114mins

The say all publicity is good publicity, but that theory was put to the test when author Orson Scott Card, upon whose novel South African Gavin Hood’s mega-budget sci-fi flick is adapted, spoke out about how much he disagrees with gay marriage. Eek! The movie, about earth’s battles with alien race the Formics, looks like it will be an absolute belter though. On general release October 25

Julian Assange has been vocal in his discrediting of this film about the birth of WikiLeaks and the global implications its release of secret government files and information has had. Despite being a strong movie, it is hard to see exactly what he found so infuriating about it. Benedict Cumberbatch is Assange, Daniel Bruhl his co-founder of the whistleblowing website Daniel Domscheit-Berg with Josh Singer’s screenplay drawing on the latter’s and Guardian journalist David Leigh’s accounts of what really happened. It is with this that Assange has voiced his disagreement, labelling the film a character assassination amongst other things, but Bill Condon’s film, if anything, is too reluctant to take a defined point of view on it all. Debates about the morals of WikiLeaks’ actions rumble on, with CGI flourishes used extensively to remind us all we are in a digital age with the breakdown in the relationship between Assange and his co-founder shaping the story as the stakes are raised, Domscheit-Berg finally denouncing Assange as a ‘manipulative asshole’. But Condon and Singer hedge their bets too much and are at pains to present both sides of the story, which is perhaps indicative of journalistic integrity but less befitting a Hollywood movie. Cumberbatch is excellent as the Aussie at the heart of a series of events with truly global ramifications, nailing Assange’s mannerisms, and it unfolds with passion and pace. If only it lifted the lid on the story behind the story a little more. Good for: Seeing Cumberbatch take another leap to the top of the Hollywood pile

Make a difference: you can play a big part in a child’s development as a nanny

The perfect au pair Free rent, food and bills and no stuffy office? Make work child’s play, quite literally, by becoming a live-in nanny. Words Jade Bremner It’s not all temper tantrums and nappy changing – being a nanny or live-in au pair can be hugely rewarding as well as fun. A career in childcare offers the chance to explore another country, get free rent and be paid to enjoy fun activities with the kids you look after. Tempted? We speak to two nannies and an expert to get the inside track ...

Stacey Johnson, nanny New Zealander Johnson is a live-in nanny in London. She’s been in her current job for five years, but only planned to stay for two. For Johnson, nannying was the obvious choice when she moved to the capital. “I grew up as a big sister and always enjoyed looking after the younger ones, so when I moved to London I thought being 22

a nanny sounded like a great job,” she says. It’s work that has eliminated her living costs and also made a huge difference to her London experience. “I earn enough to travel and live life to the full,” she says, although Johnson admits the hours can be long – an element of the role that puts people off. But the 24-year-old explains her job is hugely rewarding, which compensates for the hours involved. “I love the genuine relationships I build with families and children. It’s just all so special to me,” she says. While most of Johnson’s friends are cooped up in an office all day long, she’s out in the fresh air, making the most out of her time in the UK’s capital. “There aren’t many jobs where you get to go out in the sun and introduce

children to new things, it’s fun.” In the current unstable economy, Johnson says nannying is a smart choice, as there will always be a need for childcare, so you’ll never be out of work. “There are lots of agencies out there and they all seem to have plenty of vacancies,” she adds.

Sarah Williams, nanny Despite being a nanny for the past eight years, Williams, from New Zealand, never planned for it to be her career. “I basically fell into it,” she explains. “I had a friend who was a sole parent and I was the only person she trusted to look after her children.” Now Williams says she’s so glad she discovered nannying. “Not long after I started working for my friend, I realised how much I loved it and it’s

Worm food: er, no thanks

would you like chicken or worms? india

Aeroplane food is often pretty gross, but we’d take rubbery egg and something that represents a sausage over a worm sandwich, which is what one passenger was reportedly served. The unnamed man, who was flying on Air India from New York to Delhi, claims he found live worms in his mid-flight snack, although correspondents say the creatures may have been maggots. An Air India spokesman told the BBC that the incident “involved a leading caterer who supplies all US airlines” and that “suitable action” has been taken against the US-based company. With other Air India incidents including a plane panel falling off mid-flight, a captain who couldn’t get back in the cock pit after a toilet break due to a jammed door and the auto-pilot being accidentally switched off, it’s safe to say it hasn’t been Air India’s year. tweets of the week @DaneCook I love falling asleep to the sound of porn on in the background. @RusselBrand Been in Glasgow 5 minutes already seen two drunks arguing. Volunteer wildlife rescuers from animal welfare organisation Wildlife Victoria tranquilised the stressed-out Joey, who they have named Cyrus, in order for him to be assessed by a vet. The animal appeared to have injuries to his teeth, but helpers were more concerned about the stress it was suffering, as this can develop into a condition called capture myopathy, which can kill kangaroos. Kangaroos are not an unusual sight in the area as they live in the bushland surrounding the airport, however they are not often found browsing in the airport shops.

Madonna banned from cinema US

Pop mega star Madonna has been banned from a Texas cinema chain after texting during a movie. Her Madgesty was at the New YorkFilm Festival but tapped away on her phone during the screening. One fellow filmgoer even asked her to stop, to which she reportedly replied that it was for business. Her excuse wasn’t good enough for Alamo Drafthouse co-founder and CEO Tim League, however, who tweeted: “Until she apologises to movie fans, Madonna is banned from watching movies.” Go Tim!

They might not have said it so openly while he was alive, but they made no bones about it at Mark Brandon ‘Chopper’ Read’s memorial service. Read, who died of liver cancer on October 9 aged 58, asked that a public service be held after his death to enable people to get things off their chests. Reading from a script prepared by Read’s family, the celebrant who conducted Thursday’s service in Melbourne told of the time when Chopper was interviewed in Pentridge Prison: “Some of what he told that young reporter was true, some borrowed and some of it was absolute bullshit.” However, others spoke of “an utter gentleman”, a talented artist and a champion of the underdog. Although Read was a ‘gentleman’ who, by his own admission, killed as many as seven people. If he wasn’t bullshitting.

For those who missed out though, Banksy has been at pains to point out that it was a one off and the stall will not be there again.

Lowy: wants an Aussie Socceroos coach

socceroos target an aussie coach FOOTBALL FFA chairman Frank Lowy has said he wants an Australian to coach the national team at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Three contenders have been named for the position to replace Holger Osieck, who was sacked after the Socceroos’ two recent 6-0 losses to Brazil and France. A-League managers Ange Postecoglou (Melbourne Victory), Graham Arnold (Central Coast Mariners) and Tony Popovic (Western Sydney Wanderers) are the frontrunners for the role that is said to be filled in the next two weeks. Lowy said the coach chosen will hold the role for the World Cup, the Asian Cup in Australia and onwards. “When we appointed Holger (Osieck) as coach three years ago, I recall I said words to the effect ‘I hope the next coach will be an Australian’,” Lowy said last week. “That was the plan and is still the plan. Our preference is clearly for an Australian coach. “Three names are being talked about and it’s not wrong that we have three possible Australian candidates.”

After the first international fixture of the year was a huge success, NFL fans in the UK have already been rewarded with a third regular season game in London next year. But there’s still the second for this year to be played. The American football circus is back in town this weekend when the Jacksonville Jaguars, the home team for the purposes of this fixture, host the San Francisco 49ers. Despite playing one of the NFL’s

most famous sides in the 49ers, the Jaguars can expect to enjoy plenty of support here after they committed to playing games at Wembley stadium for the next four years. They’ll be keen to find some semblance of momentum, too, after a shocking start to the season – before they played the Chargers on Sunday, they were winless after six games. Five-time Super Bowl winners and losers in the big one last year, the 49ers are 4-2 up, and won three in a row before the Titans at the weekend.

Formula 1 Super League and the NRL both have a Q different set of rules – how will they get around that at the World Cup? Compromise. The NRL’s ban on the shoulder charge A has been adopted by the international rules panel, but instead of the Australian two referee system there will be just one man in the middle at the tournament starting this week. Another key decision was the panel ignoring the NRL’s mid-season ‘one punch and you’re off’ policy after Paul Gallen (right) got away with a penalty after a full on brawl in State of Origin. Also, the corner post won’t be part of the touchline and the NRL’s version of advantage will be used instead of Super League’s ‘’free’’ play advantage rule.

Men of Steel TNT previews the toughestever Rugby League World Cup to be played in England, Wales and France Words michael gadd

The toughest-ever Rugby League World Cup kicks off on Saturday after a change in regulations allowed more of the code’s top players to be involved than ever before. Australia had more than 120 NRL players at their disposal, and could use only a maximum of 24 of them, meaning those with ties to other nations can still play in the showcase tournament – and now not risk missing out on State of Origin honours. In the initial 24-man squads announced ahead of the tournament, there were 162 NRL players (just 48 of them in the Aussie and New Zealand squads) and 73 Super League players, including 19 for England and 16 for France. The rest of those players had to go somewhere, and with the exception of Papua New Guinea (who have 17 non-major comp players and 13 from their own domestic competition) and the US (who have 20 from their local league and lower Australian leagues), the majority of players have top-level professional experience. Australia coach Tim Sheens has said his team is wearing the favourites tag well, despite not being the defending champions after they were beaten by New Zealand in 2008. The Kiwis have also enjoyed the added boost of Sonny Bill Williams deciding at the last minute that he wants to have a crack at being the first player to add a rugby league world title to a Rugby Union World Cup, NRL championship and Super Rugby title. Meanwhile, Australia’s opening pool A opponent is England, who with three Burgess brothers and New Zealand Warriors’ world record signing Sam Tomkins, are in the best position for decades to cause an upset. “I think people, as do our players, have more of a respect for those two teams now,” Sheens said. “So there is more uncertainty and of course uncertainty brings interest. “But we are rated and seeded number one, we have been for some time, well before my time. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you win it.” 32

“I think this will be one of the strongest, if not the strongest, contested World Cup.” Here, TNT explains how the groups work and looks at who is a shot at causing an upset. Group A (England, Australia, Fiji, Ireland). Three teams qualify for the quarter finals from this and group B, but the result of the opener between England and Australia will have a major bearing on who they play in the semi. Both sides would prefer to avoid New Zealand before the final but that’s what awaits for whoever finishes second. Ireland and Fiji are a whole other rivalry, after the 2008 surprise packets Ireland were beaten by Fiji in the quarters. Fiji are big contenders to cause an upset at some stage, with Newcastle Knights flyer Akuila Uate providing X-factor alongside some remarkable family connections – Ashton, Tariq and Korbin Sims in the forwards, and in the backs Wes and Kevin Naiqama and Daryl and Ryan Millard. Games: Oct 26 Australia v England (Cardiff); Oct 28 Fiji v Ireland (Rochdale); Nov 2 England v Ireland (Huddersfield) and Australia v Fiji (St Helens); Nov 9 England v Fiji (Hull) and Australia v Ireland (Limerick). Group B (New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, France, Samoa). New Zealand have the easiest pool of the big guns, but will have to watch themselves with the spirited Papua New Guinea, the naturally gifted Samoans and France. Only one side missed out on the quarters here, and the French will be intent on it not being them after disappointing in 2008. For two of their group games, they’ll also have home advantage. Samoa has talent sprinkled throughout despite losing Roy Asotasi and Steve Matai (former Kiwi reps) to injury – they still boast St Helens-bound Penrith forward Mose Masoe, Wigan’s Harrison Hansen, Reni Maitua and Ben Roberts from the Eels and exciting Brisbane Bronco Antonio Winterstein.

World Cup addict: Sonny Bill Williams looks to add league to his rugby union title PNG are what the World Cup is all about, and don’t be surprised to see some of their best performers in the Super League next year. How Knight Neville Costigan on the field and coach Adrian Lam pull them together will be key and their opener against France will likely decide their fate. Games: Oct 27 Papua New Guinea v France (Hull KR) and New Zealand v Samoa (Warrington); Nov 1 New Zealand v France (Avignon); Nov 4 Papua New Guinea v Samoa (Hull KR); Nov 8 New Zealand v Papua New Guinea (Leeds); Nov 11 France v Samoa (Perpignan).

Group C (Tonga, Scotland, Italy). The second tier of groups cross over, but one from each goes through to a tough contest in the last eight. Of all the teams in C and D, Tonga’s Super League and NRL talent make it the biggest chance at causing problems for the big sides. Scotland might have something to say about that though, led by Danny Brough and with three pairs of brothers in the line-up. They’re in good hands with former NSW playmaker Peter Wallace at halfback. Super League stars include Willie Manu (St Helens), Mickey Paea (Hull KR), Ukuma Ta’ai (Huddersfield) and Konrad Hurrell, who chose to play for Tonga despite the Kiwis being interested. Italy too boast a wealth of Australian representatives who qualify to wear their blue – in their cross-group opener against Wales we’ll see skipper Anthony Minicheillo fresh from the NRL grand final win, his brother Mark, Cronulla prop Kade Snowden and Wests Tigers full-back James Tedesco. Games: Oct 29 Tonga v Scotland (Workington); Nov 3 Scotland v Italy (Workington); Nov 10 Tonga v Italy (Halifax). Group D (Wales, United States, Cook Islands). This will be Wales’s pool to lose but winning will mean a meeting with England or Australia in the quarters – they lack

Irish Aussie: Wigan’s Pat Richards plays for Ireland the stars of some rivals and come into the tournament under the radar. The Italy clash is enticing. The Cook Islands are a potential surprise packet with Wigan’s Anthony Gelling and former Bradford centre Keith Lulia joined mostly by NSW Cup talent and fringe NRL/ SL players. Being polite, the United States will struggle in their first World Cup under the direction of former Castleford coach Terry Matterson after Brian Smith suddenly quit. They’ve cobbled together as many pros as they can and suffered an uproar from omitted US-based players, including skipper Apple Pope. New skipper Joseph Paulo (Penrith), his brother Junior (Parramatta) and Panthers teammate Clint Newton are their stars, but they’re an unknown quantity with just three members of the squad to recently play Canada coming to Europe. Games: Oct 30: United States v Cook Islands (Bristol); Nov 3: Wales v United States (Wrexham), Nov 10: Wales v Cook Islands (Neath). Quarter-finals: Nov 15 winner group B v winner Group C (Leeds); Nov 16 winner Group A v winner Group D (Wrexham); Nov 16 runner-up Group A v third place Group B (Wigan); Nov 17 runner-up Group B v third place Group A (Warrington) Semi finals: Nov 23 Quarter final winners clash in a double header at Wembley, London. Who steps in for Clarke if back not right for Ashes? The options aren’t plentiful but there is one stand-out

» Agree or disagree? Is the upcoming ODI series a farce? letters@tntmagazine.com 34

tntMagazine.com

The favourite to take the vacant Socceroos coaching job, Ange Postecoglou, has an excellent national league record but not a great one at international level. Ange was replaced as Young Socceroos coach in 2007 after the Aussies missed out on the under-20 World Cup, yet Frank Lowy is committed to a homegrown coach to take the national team to Brazil. This is a massive mistake. Tony Popovic has one year at Western Sydney and some experience as assistant at Crystal Palace, so is way too inexperienced. Postecoglou talks a good game but

Tony Popovic is way too inexperienced

his SMH column showed him to be nothing more than a cheerleader: “I have continually heard our team is not that good, our younger players are not that good, our league is not that good and our football philosophy is not that good... Sport is about upsetting the odds.” It’s not quidditch mate!

Photos: Getty

In the absence of Mike Hussey, Simon Katich and other experienced batsmen who would ideally be available for the upcoming Ashes series Down Under, the Australians face a conundrum if Michael Clarke’s back is no good. The Aussie skipper has been the hosts’ best player and an X-factor as a tactician regardless of his apparent deficiencies off the field. His ability to step up when needed has papered over problems with his side and when he’s not there in Tests, it’ll be noticeable. With the retirements of Ricky Ponting, Hussey and the inexplicable omission of the likes of Katich, Australia is devoid of an experienced head ready to step in seamlessly if he can’t take the field. Shane Watson was vice-captain but isn’t up for it – batting at three and being the most reliable bowler in the side is responsibility enough, probably. Brad Haddin was parachuted in as vice-captain, but if he was considered a full leader he’d be heading the ODI side in India now. Chris Rogers does a stellar job for Middlesex and has heaps of experience, although nowhere near as much as he should have in Test cricket. The rest, other than Clarke, are young injury-prone bowlers or batsmen with no concrete claim on their spot. This leaves one option – George Bailey. The Tasmanian debuted for his country in Twenty20s as captain, and is hardly the most experienced ODI player as captain, but he does the job with aplomb. He’s on fire with the bat in the 50-over format with his average sneaking over 50 after his most recent 92 not out, with his innings before that 82 and 87 against England and 85 in the first ODI in India. Form in the middle is form in the middle and if he was named to debut as captain in Tests, the Aussies could do worse. He’s also a top leader and when England come to Australia and everything doesn’t go right, who can discount the value of his level of positivity, as shown after India chased down 359 with ease.

it’s a dead heat Talk about preparing for the worst: on October 26, Manitou Springs in Colorado holds its annual coffin race. The race is held to honour the legend of Emma Crawford, a lady who came to the town more than 100 years ago in the hope that the fresh mountain air would cure her Tuberculosis. She climbed the town’s Red Mountain and fell in love with the place. Her dying wish (the mountain air didn’t help it seems) was to be buried at the top. Her wish was granted, but years later, torrential rain washed her coffin down the mountain, and so the coffin race is held each year as a ‘fun tribute’ to Emma.

I even like a good banana pancake. It’s the actual backpacks themselves that I have a problem with. They’re wrong for travelling on so many levels – hefty, cumbersome, don’t fit in overhead lockers, easy to rip open and thieve from, oh, and always backbreakingly heavy. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve twinged my back trying to get mine on. Or the amount of things I’ve knocked over. In fact sometimes it seems as though the only reason people carry backpacks is to distinguish between themselves as hardy, roughing-it travellers and all the softy tourists, when in fact half the time, pop open a set of mud-splattered clasps and you’ll find a three-step Clinique skin program and spare pair of high heels inside. Basically there’s only one situation where a nice, sturdy little wheelie isn’t a far superior option and that’s if you’re doing serious trekking. Even then, if you’re lugging a 65l bag with you, well you’re a lot tougher than me (and you really should probably have left more of your stuff at the hostel reception). Perhaps Jansport, Katmandu, Kipling and a whole bunch of other savvy brands conspired at some point to rename budget travel ‘backpacking’ just so we’d all feel we had to purchase one of their badly-designed bags? Well the games up, guys. From now on, we’re off lightweightwheelie-suitcasing. Hmm, doesn’t have quite the same ring, does it?

two weeks. I would recommend basing your trip around this metropolitan hub and not trying to cover all of Argentina, as it is such an enormous country it won’t be possible or enjoyable to try to see all of it in two weeks. I would recommend an itinerary that starts with three days exploring the city; starting in the colonial quarter of San Telmo before continuing south to the photogenic colourful corrugated houses of La Boca. Next head to Microcentre, the heart of the city where you can see some of Buenos Aires’ grand architecture at Plaza de Mayo, including the pink presidential offices Casa Rosada and the nearby baroque Catedral Metropolitana. Try to fit in at least one classic Argentine spectacle; a tango performance, opera or a play at the spectacular classic Teatro Colón, or a game at one of BA’s megastar football clubs Boca Juniors or River Plate. There are a number of great day trips from Buenos Aires that are possible without lengthy journeys and overnight stays. Tigre is a popular destination as the delta offers lots of waterbased activities, such as kayaking. Uruguay is another popular day trip from BA, as you can

hop on a one-hour fast boat to picturesque UNESCO world heritage site Colonia for around £30 to enjoy its architecture, riverside setting and spectacular sunsets. For a slightly longer boat ride (3 hours, £59) you can reach Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital and Buenos Aires’ stylish little sister, which is packed with great art galleries and historic buildings. Stroll along La Rambla, Montevideo’s coastal promenade which links downtown to the eastern beaches. The Museo del Fútbol housed in the stadium is a must for any football fan. You might like to stay one night here, though, as the boat journey is much longer. Once you return to Buenos Aires, head inland to San Antonio de Areco, one of the prettiest towns on the pampas (Argentina’s fertile grasslands). Here you can stay on an estancia (a ranch) to experience life as a gaucho. Estancias often offer the opportunity to go horse riding, watch a gaucho show of horsemanship and folk dances and try some of the world-renowned steak this area is famous for. Alternatively, head on an overnight bus or internal flight to the impressive Iguazú Falls on the Argentinean and Brazilian border. If you want to skip out Uruguay, you could try to visit some of Argentina’s dramatic southern landscape in Patagonia. An internal flight is a good idea as the roads are slow, unreliable and dangerous, not to mention the almost 2,000 miles to cover. A flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia (3.5 hours) or El Calafate (3 hours) will set you back around £300 for a return flight.

treasure island When in Bolivia, check out Isla de Sol, an island which is a short boat trip off the southern shores of Lake Titicaca. Home to more than 80 mostly Inca ruins, the island is very rural and is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the towns. Ross, via email

Dark side Dublin

Photos: Getty, Thinkstock, Facebook, Joe_King, Pshemek, Anosmia, Jan Slangen, Facebook, Foxhunter22

If the stag parties of Temple Bar are your idea of hell, discover the Dublin that really claims association with the fiery underworld Words liz howard On Montpelier Hill, to the south of Dublin, a steep climb through a silent pine forest, stand the ruins of a charred building, its empty windows looking out across the Wicklow Plains. This is the Hell Fire Club, once the scene of Dublin’s most blasphemous entertainment. It was in this nowdeserted building, during the 18th century, that members of the aristocracy would meet to indulge in ‘immoral acts’, their motto: Fais ce que tu voudras (Do what thou wilt). But this wasn’t your bog-standard drinking and fornicating. Members of the Hell Fire Club were rumoured to worship the devil, carry out strange rituals that involved animal sacrifice and even, on some occasions, the killing of humans. I climb the crumbling stairs and stand in one of the dark, graffiti-sprayed rooms. I pride myself on being able to whip up a hysterical frenzy and, but alone in the ruins, terror evades me and I find myself drawn to the window with its epic view of the Dublin bay. Still, looking back at the building’s hollow shell as I descend the hill, the place is eerie. Inspiration, perhaps, for one of Dublin’s most famous literary figures, Bram Stoker, creator of 1897 gothic masterpiece, Dracula. Stoker was born in Dublin and the city is full of landmarks likely to have fed his imagination. Now into its second year, the Bram Stoker Festival (Oct 26-28; bramstokerfestival.com) pays homage with a weekend of vampire and Dracula-related activities. Onwards in our quest for terror, we board the Gravedigger bus (thegravedigger.ie) for a horror tour of Dublin. The windows are blacked out and we climb to the top deck amid smoke, green lights and the sound effects of a ghost train. The tour is led by young Dublin actor, Shane, Halloween-ready in shrouds and whitened face. I’ve never been on a bus tour but any doubts about enjoying myself are unfounded, and Shane proves to be a brilliant storyteller. He tells us how Dublin was ravaged by the plague, back in the 14th century, a grim time when mothers would hide sick children for fear of banishment, only to be boarded up in their own houses and left to die, terrified neighbours ignoring all screams for help. “There were those who believed the plague was brought on Dublin as a punishment from god for all their blaspheming and cursing,” says Shane, prancing down the bus in his rags. “Ferkin eejits.” Of course, Dublin truly darkest

days were not made so by god, nor even the bubonic plague, but by Britain’s brutal rule over the island. The tour stops outside Dublin Castle, seat of British government until 1922, then on to Kilmainham Gaol where many leaders of Irish rebellions were imprisoned and executed by the British. “It would be fair to say, this wasn’t the most popular place in Dublin,” Shane says. Then, looking at me for the prerequisite reminder of my nation’s guilt: “Sorry, London.” The tour ends with a pint in 200-year-old Gravediggers pub, next to the satisfyingly spooky Glasnevin Cemetery. The

I’ve got a sense of something not right

group is friendly and it appears Shane is not, in fact, holding me responsible for British imperialism. I get a gruesome reminder of Britain’s savagery the next day, with a visit to the crypt in St Michan’s church. Stairs descend through a trap door at the side of the church and we find ourselves in a long, narrow corridor, metal gates along its walls leading into small chambers. And inside these chambers: coffins, skulls and mummies. More ghastly still is a chamber in which lies the death mask of republican revolutionary, Wolfe Tone, and the bodies of Henry and John Sheares, two brothers executed for their part in the 1798 rebellion. Their original death warrant is on display in front of their coffins: to be hung until nearly dead, to have their entrails removed and burned before them, to be decapitated and finally for their bodies to be cleft into four pieces. NEXT WEEK Yes, Dublin has some ghosts and Bite-size Edinburgh: fantastic figures of horror but, sadly, What to see if the bloody deeds of humans are always you’re time-tight the most horrific. Haunted Happenings runs regular ghost hunts at Oxford Castle and other locations around the country. Prices start from £45pp. See hauntedhappenings.co.uk for more information.

WINNER sacre coeur, PARIS Bridget Hutchen, Australia WHY IT WORKS I was inspired to shoot this as it’s such a historical landmark. It wasn’t difficult to capture the intricate detail as the building is an artwork in itself. It’s on an angle to convey the scale of the building, which I think I have achieved.

RUNNER-UP ROE ISLAND Jamie Douthwaite, UK

WHY IT WORKS The beautiful county of Cumbria has gained a place in my heart. The shifting skies, the magical light and wondrous landscape continue to enthral me. I took this photo at a favourite place of mine on Piel Island, at the end of the Furness Peninsula. I was captivated by the beauty of the sunset. I hope it captures its remote, mysterious and atmospheric nature. The upturned boats, in my opinion, all add to the magic. I wanted to convey the feeling of being drawn towards the light of the setting sun and desperately wanted to capture the shifting sky and the patterns in it. tntMagazine.com

museum of bad art

We know art is supposed to be objective, but there’s really no other way of summing up these, ahem, masterpieces than as abismal. Good job a place like the Museum Of Bad Art exists then, and all these unwanted paintings – which, no doubt, have had time invested by someone who thought they were creating the next Picasso – have a home to go to. Sited in Dedham, Massachusetts, US, this hilarious celebration of bad art began its life in the basement of a private home. But as the collection quickly grew, it moved its artwork to three different locations: the basement of the Dedham Community Theatre, where the gallery is conveniently situated just outside the men’s loo, appropriately lit by an unforgiving fluorescent light; the Somerville Gallery at the eponymous theatre; and in the offices of Brookline Access Television. There are 400 pieces in the permanent collection and you’ll find 20 to 40 exhibited at each location. If you can’t make it to Massachusetts to appreciate these marvellous pieces 46 00

of art, you can view and chortle at them online. Don’t expect paint-bynumbers or kitschy motifs of dogs playing cards. Although you would never see these works in a commercial gallery, they all have certain, erm, qualities that draw you in. Ogle at landscapes and wonder if the painting on display is an ice-cream or a mountain, then suspend your disbelief at the absurdity of the picture of a giant orange cat consuming mankind, or the lady stroking the severed head of a horse, as the artist appears to have forgotten the animal’s hindquarters. The most laugh-out-loud paintings can be found amongst the nudes. Erotic and sexy these are not. Here you’ll find a naked woman that is more out-ofproportion than a Barbie doll, with impossibly huge boobs, over-long arms and a titchy bum. But the piece de resistance has to be the brilliantly-titled Woman Riding Crustacean, showing what appears to be a blow-up doll sitting astride a giant lobster. Hit the slopes! Winter bunnies rejoice – ski season is finally here. TNT gives you the lowdown on the best European runs you can get to by train Words Helen Elfer

They’re a different breed to the sun-worshippers; waiting for winter to come so they can hit the slopes. So if you get your kicks out of hurtling down the side of a mountain on two planks of wood, or with your legs strapped to a board, the wait is over. Ski season is here. Got your ski suit, wraparound sunnies, thermal gloves, chapstick and a tube of SPF30? Now, how about your train ticket? Yep, finally the ski crowd are starting to come round to the idea of travelling to the snowy slopes by rail rather than by plane. After all, it makes sense. Rail travel is carbon-friendlier than flying. You get to skip those mind-numbing waits at airport customs (and you won’t be forced to stuff your deodorant and contact lens solution into a miniature sandwich bag). A train cabin is infinitely more comfortable than a cramped plane seat. And best of all, if you take a sleeper, you can arrive early, ready for a full day’s skiing, and save yourself the cost of a night’s accommodation. Need we go on? Dan Thomas, founder of Snowcarbon.co.uk, a one-stop site for everything you need to know about travelling to the slopes by train, adds the clincher. “Once I’m sitting up there at the top of a mountain, I like to think to myself: Well, thank god I’m not on the Tube…” Amen to that. You can travel to all these star skiing locations in a matter of hours.

Alpe d’Huez, France From London to the slopes in: 8 hours, 20 minutes There’s almost always bright sunshine over the 250km of terrain at Alpe D’Huez, where four distinct skiing sectors are linked by lift. First-timers will find the decent network of beginner slopes great to practice on, while everyone else can swish speedily down the long reds at Signal l’Homme. AprÉs ski: There are plenty of bars to while away the evenings in, along with live music venues and late-night clubs. Try the friendly O’Bar (Chalet La Clé, Route d’Huez) for a well-earned tipple or two after a day on the slopes. Chalet du Lac Besson is by the frozen lake above a cross-country track. It can only be reached on skis or by snowmobile; well worth a visit for grills over an open fire. Recommended route: Depart St Pancras on the 7.31am Eurostar, change in Paris and take the 12.41pm TGV, arriving Grenoble at 3.37pm; then a 75-minute transfer. alpedhuez.com ››

Les Arcs, France From London to the slopes in: 8 hours Daredevils and death wishers flock to Les Arcs to get their extreme snowsports fix. There’s top-speed tobogganing, and ski joering, which involves being pulled over the snow behind a horse. But if you’re seeking a canon-blast of adrenaline, you just have to give speed riding a go. Part-paragliding, part-skiing, this experience is about as exhilarating as it gets. Those who prefer to keep skis firmly on the snow will still find plenty of intermediate slopes to suit in the Paradiski area, which links to neighbouring La Plagne by the biggest cable car in the world: the Vanoise Express. AprÉs ski: The nightlife isn’t quite as amped-up as the skiing, but there are plenty of spots to enjoy a civilised bevvy such as Red Hot Saloon at happy hour. redhotsaloon.com Recommended route: Depart St Pancras on the 10am Eurostar Ski Train, arriving at Bourg St Maurice at 6.51pm, then it’s a seven-minute ride by funicular train to Arcs 1600.

Montgenèvre, France From London to the slopes in: 9 hours, 15 minutes Pretty, unpretentious and good value, Montegenèvre is highly recommended for first-time skiers because of the bright and sunny nursery slopes that lie right by the village. There’s plenty of off-piste action when it snows in the Gondrans bowl, Rocher de l’Aigle and off the Col de l’Alpet – take a guide to show you the best routes. Montegenèvre has a solid boarding scene, too. AprÉs ski: It’s all about old world charm rather than hardcore partying here, so spend your evenings making the most of the local restaurants. Try Le Capitaine’s (La Praya) wood-fired pizzas, or if you’ve cash to splash, gourmet grub at La Table Blanche. hotellechaletblanc.com Recommended route: Depart St Pancras around 9.30am on the Eurostar, change in Paris and take the TGV, arriving Oulx at around 7.30pm; then a 25-minute taxi ride. Book rail travel with Rail Europe. raileurope.co.uk montgenevre.com

Sauze d’Oulx, Italy From London to the slopes in: 9 hours, 15 minutes Intrepid? Adventurous? Like to get off the beaten piste? You’ll go gaga for this area, as there are plenty of secret forest routes local guides can help you discover. Sauze d’Oulx’s tree-lined red runs are best suited to intermediate skiers, but advanced skiers can make the easy connection to Sestriere and the black runs at the top of Mount Motta and Mount Sises. AprÉs ski: This Italian village with its sweetly cobbled streets used to be known as ‘Ibiza-in-the-snow.’ This thought

might fill you with either excitement or horror, but either way, the resort is still quite a boozy fave with Brits. That said, Sauze d’Oulx is more cocktails than clubbing these days, so start off the night with a few aperitivi at Caffe della Seggiovia (Piazza Assietta 4). Recommended route: Depart St Pancras about 9.30am on the Eurostar, change in Paris and take the TGV, arriving at Oulx around 7.30pm; then it’s a 15-minute taxi ride. Book with Rail Europe. raileurope.co.uk sauzeonline.com

Söll, Austria From London to the slopes in: 18 hours If you’re planning a trip with mates of mixed skiing ability, Söll is a pretty good bet. The Ski Welt is the largest linked ski area in Austria, and has plenty of easy blues for beginners and harder reds for the more experienced. Advanced skiers will have to look a little harder to find a challenge, but there are some very steep runs at the Hohe Salve. Night skiing is huge here and the floodlit run from Hochsöll down to Söll is nothing short of exhilarating. AprÉs ski: The slopes here might be gentle, but the nightlife is quite the opposite. This cutesy Tirolean village gets raucous later and you’ll find skiers dancing on the tables at Moonlight Bar and other spots around town practically every night of the week. There must be something in the schnapps. moonlightbar-soell.com Recommended route: Depart St Pancras around 3.30pm on the Eurostar, change in Paris and take the City Night Line sleeper train, arriving Worgl around 9.40am, then a 15-minute taxi ride. Book with Deutsche Bahn from £215 return in a six-berth couchette. bahn.com wilderkaiser.info ››

Expedition Route: Cuzco to Machu Picchu This train used to be called the Backpacker, and despite the name change still has cheap tickets and extra rack room for bulky rucksacks. The three-hour journey begins in Poroy (eight miles from Cuzco) before winding 50 miles through the Sacred Valley, the Andean foothills, and then following the path of the Urubamba river. For the best views of the river and Inca ruins, make sure you nab a seat on the left hand side of the train going up to Machu Picchu and on the right hand side when you return. perurail.com

Indian Maharaja Deccan Odyssey Route: Mumbai to Delhi India’s famous Palace on Wheels, with its plush carpets and gilded tableware, used to be the epitome of luxury rail travel. But things have moved on a bit and nowadays, the rather swanky Indian Maharaja Deccan Odyssey is where it’s at. There’s a gym, beauty salon and massage centre on board, and yes, a good few bars so you can still get stuck into your G&Ts – this is upmarket India after all. The route connects Mumbai and Delhi via Rajasthan, so your journey could include cave excursions at Ajanta, a jungle safari at Sawai Madhopur and of course, that all important photo op at the Taj Mahal.

Taking the high road We tackle ‘Death Road’, the most dangerous place to cycle in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains Words Jennifer Carr

Tourist-free (almost): cheeky monkey; life on the road; dorms at the Casa Loma Hostel some 1450m up in the cloud forest. We head up from Minca late afternoon in a 4WD and finish the last leg of the journey with a thigh-tingling 30-minute hike to the ridge, catching a glimpse of the last lingering streaks of sunset on our arrival. The winking lights of Santa Marta hold my gaze some 45km back down the mountain. We’re all feeling a little weary, but are swiftly revived by the first of many rum shots as a surprisingly chill Alpine breeze creeps around the mountain edge. I shiver for the first time since entering Colombia, a sensation both pleasing and strange after the humidity of Minca’s heavy jungle climate. As part of the unique Los Pinos experience, we sit down to a delicious alfresco dinner of spicy chicken stew, rice and fresh guacamole – made from the creamy produce of trees growing only metres from our table. The host of this baseturned-hostel, a charismatic Colombian called Alejandro, joins us and lubricates both the meal and conversation with copious pours of honey rum and tales of his life on the mountain. His hosting skills are both effortless and enchanting, and, inspired by the Colombian ability to truly live in the moment, all my anxiety about the downward descent disappears. We drift over to large, lumpy sofas that have been placed near a roaring fire. The warmth is a welcome counter to the fresh frost that has settled across the milky, moonlit landscape of valleys and bluffs. My eye is drawn away from the scene by a storm that flickers out at sea, its pale blue current brightening the sky in sharp shocks and prompting our host to propose a drinking game for each burst of electricity. More rum shots appear, this time served up in a local maracuja (passion fruit) shell, muddled with the fruit’s tangy seeds and fragrant mountain honey. It’s hands 56

down the best shot I’ve ever had, and in arguably the most memorable of surroundings. But our tales around the campfire are short-lived; all eyes in our party droop as the warmth of the fire and rum takes hold. Next morning, I’m up at 5.30am and my reward is an exclusive view of the valley as a snaking morning mist curls around the mountain and early sunbeams hint of a glorious day ahead. bananas and some of Alejandro’s addictive Minca-grown coffee. I’m wired and ready to saddle up. Tom’s good nature and intuition for our group’s varying tolerance for thrills makes him the perfect guide, but you get the sense he’s game for going as far as possible without jeopardising our safety. The occasionally tricky roads are made significantly easier by our £2000 state-of-the-art bicycles, shipped over from Europe with Armadillo treads and superlight aluminium frames. We go through the basic safety procedures and a few warnings about canyons, then clip on our helmets and hit the trail. For 30 free-wheeling, fanciful minutes, we glide like greased lightning down, down, and lower still through jungle-fringed cloud forests where monkeys howl and hummingbirds skit through deliciously fragrant flora. After an hour, we pass through a well-eroded river gorge

and traverse muddy terrain that sends me sliding towards the edge of the canyon. Thankfully, I avoid my own ET-style leap into the abyss and slam on the brakes instead. It’s the closest I come to flying over the ridge, and I sheepishly receive a reminder from Tom to not let my need for speed get the better of me. Minutes later we’re winding through bamboo thickets and arrive at one of the Sierra’s oldest working coffee fincas, dating back to the early 1900s. We disembark, stiff legs grateful for the stretch, and I salivate at the thought of a freshly roasted coffee. After a small tour, we’re greeted timidly by a handful of workers who continue the physically taxing job of collecting, drying and roasting the beans according to traditional techniques. We learn through an interpreter that the Colombians keep the lower quality, watered-down filter coffee to sell locally and ensure the tourists enjoy the A-grade beans. It explains why previous ››

The Insider’s guide Tom Wilkinson is the head tour guide at Elemento Outdoor Adventure. These are his top tips for exploring Minca and the Sierra Nevada range. Swim at … Oscar’s Place, Minca “At only 600m up the mountain, Oscar’s Place is really something worth experiencing. The swimming pool was initially installed as a water supply, but is now both a decorative feature, as it reflects the sinking sun, and also practical, as it serves as a hydroelectric power battery. Each night at 6.30pm, just after dusk, the plug is pulled and so begins five hours of free electricity as the pool is refilled with fresh water for people to jump into in the morning.” (Minca, tel. 00 57 313 534 4500) Stay at ... Casa Loma, Minca “Tucked away behind the town’s crumbling colonial church, the eclectic Casa Loma (meaning ‘House on the Hill’ in Spanish) gives guests a boutique experience at budget prices. As a seasoned traveller and longtime lover of Latin America, owner Jay’s passion for the details and dedication to keeping guests happy, well-fed and entertained means many often end up staying for weeks in this family-like atmosphere. The home-cooked spicy chorizo and plantain breakfast for champions isn’t to be missed either. It only costs £12 per person for a dorm bed or £8 for a hammock.” casalomaminca.blogspot.co.uk Volunteer with ... Elemento Outdoor Adventure “We work with several charities and can combine expeditions with volunteer work in either teaching, medicine or conservation. We are directly financially supporting the Mision Gaia Foundation, which is dedicated to biodiversity conservation, and are running a collaborative competition to find, employ and train two new mountain guides from the local schools.” misiongaia.org

roadside-bought Colombian coffees haven’t hit the spot (and are usually loaded with sugar to compensate). Reuniting ourselves with the path, we bomb it the rest of the way through the valley, with fallen, mashed avocados littering the track like a giant guacamole trail as ears pop and signal our descent back into the outskirts of Minca town. It’s only taken us two hours and 40 minutes to carve up the Sierra Nevada range on two wheels, but I feel like my appetite for the entire region is not even close to sated. I hit boutique hillside hostel Casa Loma to lose myself in yet another startling sunset. It gilds the entire mountainside in a magical, rose blush, and I swear I can see the lookout of Los Pinos from my lazy horizontal vantage point in an alfresco hammock. Just when I think things couldn’t get any better, Elemento’s Tom pushes a large maracuja fruit laced with rum into my hands and declares, “I think you might have earned this today, chica.” ❚ Elemento Outdoor Adventure’s Los Pinos tour costs £100pp and includes 4WD transfer up to the ridge, overnight accommodation, dinner and breakfast, and all equipment. elementooutdoor.com

Be warned, though: the water is unexpectedly chilly here. Los pinos Still got some strength left? The day trek to Los Pinos and back is a tough uphill journey, but it is definitely worth it. The path takes you through cloud forest at the top and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular mountain views once you reach the pinnacle. The weather changes constantly here, but on a clear day you can see the snow peaks from Los Pinos. The total walking time is between five and eight hours, but you can cheat by hailing a motorbike as far as El Campano (it’ll cost you about £2.50) and taking the dirt road to the right, cutting your trek down to three hours.
