It feels like only yesterday that I was downing shots of whisky with the Scots from Macbackpackers (at 11am), tucking into tasty pies and drinking mojitos (classy, me), and watching the frenzy of excited adventurers booking ridiculously good bargains for their upcoming travels. And yet the last TNT/STA Travel Show was a whole eight months ago. The good news is, that means it’s time for the winter edition of the show. Come November 1, the doors to the Business Design Centre in Islington will once more open to you lot, so you can bag exclusive deals of up to 60% off, win holidays, bid for bargains and get advice and tips from the travel experts. To find out the lowdown and what companies will be exhibiting, see our special Travel Show preview from page 18 and visit tnttravelshow.com to register. For inspiration, simply turn to our travel section from page 39 for guides to Turkey (p58), the South Pacific (p62) and Beijing (p68). To find out why skiers and boarders should kiss goodbye to the fly and instead jump on the train, turn to page 50. Can’t ski? Neither could I... read about my learning-to-ski experience on page 42. Guess what? It was a slippery slope... Elsewhere, no one can deny the guilty pleasure of belting out Tina Arena’s hit ‘Chains’ back in 1994 (yep, 20 years ago, can you bloody believe it?), and now she’s back with more tunes for us to croon to with a new album, RELOAD, and an exclusive London gig. Arena takes pride in the honesty of her lyrics, and we can certainly say she speaks the truth in her interviews. Turn to page 32 for the songstress’s views on why Celine Dion hasn’t moved on musically and what she thinks of Miley Cyrus’s ‘gyrating’. Oh, and on page 16 Joel Edgerton tells us why he’s planning on turning his trademark frown upside down... I’ll see you at the TNT/STA Travel Show on November 1 – you’ll find me at the bar.

SLIM PICKINGS: 7FT WIDE HOUSE GOES ON THE MARKET
NZ ELECTION: DIRTY TRICKS? Were dirty tricks behind John Key’s win in the NZ general election last weekend? Investigative journalist and liberal activist Nicky Hager thinks so. Writing in The Guardian, Hager, who had previously published a book called ‘Dirty Politics’, which exposed the extent of the National Party’s links with a conservative blogger, said: “New Zealand’s National party resoundingly won a third term in government on Saturday, despite revelations in my recent book about a dirty tricks campaign run from the Prime Minister’s office. “But as the voting results showed, it’s arguable that the dirty tricks had already worked, smearing and destabilising political opponents and paving the way to victory. “Key’s political opponents have been painted as dodgy, untrustworthy or incompetent. It was no surprise at all that he has stayed high in the polls and won the election.” The whole election campaign was dogged by allegations of dishonest behaviour, smearing and of mass surveillance, which forced one senior minister to resign. Key denied any wrongdoing and campaigned on the government’s strong economic record. The National party won with 48.1% of the vote, giving it 62 of 121 parliamentary seats and improving its performance on the previous vote in 2011.
TUBE SET TO RUN FOR 24 HOURS A DAY

Good news folks, a new 24-hour Tube service at weekends will begin in September 2015 – so no more night buses or expensive cabs. Yay! The new ‘Night Tube’ service will operate on Fridays and Saturdays on five lines: the Jubilee, Victoria and most of the Piccadilly, Central and Northern lines. It is expected to reduce night time journeys by an average of 20 minutes, with some cut by more than an hour, and will expand across other lines in subsequent years. “London is a bustling, 24-hour global city and by this time next year we’ll have a 24-hour Tube service to match,” said London Mayor Boris Johnson. “The Night Tube will help millions of people to get around our city more easily and quickly.” The first Night Tube train will run on
It’s probably London’s slimmest house – we can’t be sure, we haven’t been around and measured them all – and it’ll set you back a cool £235,000. The 7ft-wide, two-bed house in Harringay has been described as a ‘terrace house’ on Rightmove and has two bedrooms on the first floor, and a reception room, kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor. It also has a terrace and a gasfired central heating system. The owner told the London Evening Standard: “My friends said I was mad to buy it. But I knew I had to. I’m confident there are quirky people who will want to buy it as it’s cheaper than many onebedroom homes in this area.” The house is to be auctioned by McHugh on October 1. Only the super thin or, as the owner put it, “quirky” need apply.

IN ASSOCIATION WITH
ArcelorMittal Orbit Firstly, who knew that the ‘bright red squiggly structure thing’ actually had a proper name? Secondly, here comes a confession: despite whizzing past the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park twice a day on my commute, I’ve never once been up the ArcelorMittal Orbit that towers over the iconic East London stadium. For the past few years I’ve indulged in countless daydreams wondering about the mechanics of the structure, from how it manages to stay upright, to whether the spiral grey tunnel is actually a massive slide... So, it’s with great excitement that my date and I hopped into a lift to be hurtled 80m to the top viewing platform. Officially Britain’s tallest sculpture at 115m, the steel structure is the creation of sculptor Anish Kapoor – the brains behind Chicago’s ‘Bean’ – and designer Cecil Balmond. On a clear day you can see 20 miles in all directions, from the Wembley Arch to Battersea Power Station. Thankfully, after a week of pretty foul weather, we’re greeted with an uninterrupted panoramic view of the capital’s skyscraper skyline, where we can pick out sights such as Canary Wharf, Alexandra Palace, and even – brace yourselves – the Crystal Palace transmitting station. Of course, this in itself isn’t anything new, as there are various other spots around London that give you the same
sort of spectacular sights (The Shard, I’m mainly looking at you here). However, what the ArcelorMittal Orbit really wins out on is its unrivalled view of East London and, more specifically, the 560 acres of the Olympic Park. Large interactive screens on the lower platform help pinpoint key attractions, while those with a head for heights can take to an outdoor walkway on the top floor. It’s fair to say that the Orbit looks to be a thrilling lasting legacy of the 2012 Olympics. Not even the crushing realisation that the spiral grey tunnel is not a slide but, in fact, a huge staircase, can ruin my elevated east London experience. MYLONDON The most interesting person I’ve met in London is... I once got talking to a tube driver while on my way home. It was fascinating to get an insight into how the Tube runs and how stressful and complicated it was. It has made me more compassionate when trains are delayed for sure! My favourite spot to take visitors is... It’s a bit of a cliché but you can’t beat a trip to Columbia Road when people come to stay – the flowers, the smells and the cockney banter from the sellers is a tourist’s dream. Another place I always go is Highgate Cemetery. I took some family on the tour there last Halloween and the ghost stories are fantastic, as is the architecture and the huge oak trees.
My favourite spot in London is... Alexandra Palace. Looking out over the whole of London is beautiful. Its particularly amazing at night and on New Year’s Eve when you can watch all the fireworks across the capital go off. My perfect weekend in London would be... A lazy morning (pancakes for breakfast), followed by a mosey around the antique and vintage shops in Camden Passage. A late afternoon cocktail at The Cocktail Bar followed by dinner at John Salt on Upper Street would complete the day perfectly. Sunday I would head to Columbia Road to buy some flowers followed by lunch with friends. Then I would meander home to curl up on the sofa with my boyfriend and cat to watch a good film. What I love most about London is... I love that there is something for every mood you are in. Whether you are feeling a bit country and want to take a walk in Highgate Woods or if you want to hit the city for a glam night out at the top of the Heron Tower.
My favourite place for dinner is... For something a bit fancy it has to be Pollen Street Social. The cocktails and food are to die for, especially the pork Find Heather’s interiors and lifestyle blog at blommabloglondon.blogspot.co.uk scratchings. If I am looking for something a bit more relaxed I would head to Barrofina in Soho. Tapas is my favourite all time food and you can’t beat their range of seafood and authentic Spanish meat dishes. When you’re hungover in London you can’t beat... Chooks in Muswell Hill. Spicy buffalo wings, fries and crunchy slaw; sorts you out a treat.

CAU RESTAURANT Argentinian restaurant, Blackheath branch
In the socially conscious world we live in, those of us who can’t face going veggie at least want to know our animal of choice had a good life before it landed on our plate. I think this is what CAU is aiming for with its interior covered with images of grass, white corrugated metal panels and dandelion-esque light fixtures. It evokes a feeling of fresh air and summer days, reassuring you that the cow you’re about to eat enjoyed such things before meeting its fate on your plate. And damn that fresh air has done it good. THE GRUB Yep, as you probably guessed, it’s all about the steaks here. Inspired by a visit to Buenos Aires, the owners have filled the menu with fat slabs of Argentinian beef, served with your choice of sauce and chips or wedges. I usually like mashed potato with my piece of bloody meat, but was happy with the sliced sweet potato alternative, which also meant I could pretend I was being vaguely healthy. Although, in truth, my starter had already put paid to that: succulent pork belly in a light and crispy tempura dipped in a secret CAU sauce. Gorgeous. My date’s flatbread layered with roasted aubergine, tomatoes, olives and mozzarella was perhaps the better option if you want to leave room for dessert, which I didn’t. Near tears as I turned away cheesecake, fondant and brownie, my top three desserts, I managed to squeeze in a scoop of light coconut sorbet and an espresso. BEHIND THE BAR To have a slice of juicy Argentinian steak without an Argentinian red wine is like having Bert without Ernie. It’s just wrong. The smooth and full-bodied house wine is the perfect accompaniment, although admittedly ours arrived when we were already two thirds through our main. BILL PLEASE Starters average around £8, steaks start from £13.95, other mains from £9.95, dessert from £4.95. VERDICT Service comes with a smile but errs on the slow side, while the food is hugely satisfying, if a little expensive for what feels like a reasonably casual meal out. THE SCENE

WASTE NOT WANT NOT Support a socially conscious cafe by dining at Foxcroft & Ginger, which is donating all unsold bread and pastries from its newly opened East London site to the Whitechapel Mission every day. Around four million tonnes of food is wasted each year and one million tonnes of this is unopened. The total cost of wasted food amounts to £200 per person per year. By donating unsold goods, Foxcroft & Ginger makes sure its food is given to those who need it and not into the bin, which is great for the hungry and the environment. Last big blow-out? I went to a second-hand clothes fair last month. Instead of leaving with a few cheap bargains, I ended up spending a lot more money than I imagined! CELEBINTERVIEW
‘I’m not that serious a person in real life’ Dealing with death, guilt and cover-ups, Joel Edgerton’s latest film, Felony, is another dark thriller to add to his collection. But, the Aussie actor tells TNT, we could see his funny side soon…
Joel Edgerton is your ultimate tough guy. Just look at him: his icy blue stare, furrowed brow, rarely smiling lips and sandpaper stubble give him the air of ‘Look at me wrong and I will headbutt you without hesitation’. But rather than fighting against him, you feel like he’s the mate who would have your back. You pick the fight and then send him in and watch the fireworks (come one, we’ve all done that with our tough-guy mate at least once). Sure enough, throughout his career Edgerton has played dark characters, from a former mixed martial arts champ in Warrior and an alpha-male Navy Seal in Zero Dark Thirty to a two-timing husband in The Great Gatsby. His latest film is no exception. In Felony, Edgerton plays a cop who hits and kills a kid with his car and tries to cover it up. Dealing with guilt and tragedy, it’s an intense thriller which must have furrowed Edgerton’s brow all-the-more. Particularly as he wrote the screenplay. TNT had a quick chat with Edgerton ahead of Felony’s UK release to find out more… Tell us about your latest film, Felony… It’s a thriller that by design is very relatable. Anyone who’s been behind the wheel of a car would have imagined the scenario at the beginning of the film. It’s about an essentially good guy who causes damage to someone when no one is there to witness… It’s about the choice he makes next,
and how it affects his life, his family’s life and those of his colleagues. He also happens to be a cop. What important issues do you think the film addresses? It is really a lot about ethics and different people’s point of view on ethical dilemmas; also about how our moral compass can shift or be altered by our relationship to a crime or its perpetrator. It throws up questions of protecting family and friends. It also has a lot to do with the fears of telling the truth and the damage or deception. It is about forgiveness and punishment... redemption. Many things. All wrapped up in a thriller. You wrote the screenplay for Felony – how long have you been conjuring it up? I’ve been writing this on and off for six years… in between jobs… even during shooting other jobs in my down time. It’s been a good long period where interestingly I’ve noticed even my own ideas on this stuff shift a little. Is it a different experience, to act in something you have written yourself? It is different to some degree… Quite often I found myself feeling odd speaking words I have been writing for years. I think I also felt a little self-conscious around other actors, hoping secretly that they liked the words they were saying; that the ideas meant something to them. Australia has a reputation for adding sequins and stereotypical Aussies to its films – yours is a very serious and tense film, and you’ve even turned highly respected English actor Tom Wilkinson Aussie. Do you think it’s about time more serious films came out of Australia? I love the array of Australian films that are out there… from the frivolous comedies to the more serious and even hard boiled, unrelenting films like Snowtown. I like good movies. But yes I lean as an actor and a writer to a more serious tone. Entertaining, but serious. I would like to write a comedy, though, because I’m not that serious a person in real life. Felony is out in cinemas from October 27

CELEBINTERVIEW
Time for Tina Tina Arena is back in the spotlight with her first original album in 10 years, RESET. We meet the diminutive Aussie with the big voice and the even bigger opinions INTERVIEW CAROLINE GARNAR
Tina Arena is relaxation personified. From her easy smile to her long-lashed blink and the turn of her head, she appears to be moving in slow motion. Her silky Australian drawl is so smooth and slow she’s practically purring. Her red wedges are so high her knees are almost around her ears as she sits her petite frame back on the sofa, her feet planted on the floor, her legs wide, and her hands laid either side of her tailored black suit trousers. This is a woman so comfortable in her own skin she wears it like a onesie. And why not? She’s in a very secure and happy place. Her latest album, RESET, has gone platinum in Australia, spurring a bidding war between UK labels to release it here (Universal won). Before now we only really knew her from her 1994 hit ‘Chains’ (which we still have on our iPod), and we might have bought one of her cover albums for our mum on a particularly tight Christmas, but now she’s back, at the age of 46, with her first original album in more than a decade and an exlcusive London gig on November 6. So where the hell has she been? “I’ve made two French records, I gave birth to a little boy nearly nine years ago, I’ve done orchestral tours; I’ve had a very eclectic career that’s taken me to a lot of interesting places. I’ve toured France and Belgium extensively... I’ve done lots, my God,” she laughs. This is a very different – and less spot-lit – path to her 1990’s pop ballad peers, such as Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston I point out... and I appear to have touched on a sore subject: “I think one of the greatest sufferances in the music industry is the perpetual assimilation of people – he sounds like this, she sounds like that. The only similarity, certainly between Celine, myself and Mariah, is that we were all Sony girls. Celine is still there. Mariah and I moved on a long time ago. And it’s quite hilarious that people still put us all in the same bracket. If we talk about evolution, Mariah’s done lots of new things, she’s moved musically, but Celine hasn’t really moved. I think all we share is that we’re big voices and we all come from an era when we made a mark.” Perhaps Arena is bitter she hasn’t shared the commercial success of Celine and co? “I couldn’t give a shit about having 200 million bucks in the bank; I couldn’t think of anything worse actually, because then you’re surrounded by people who are trying to fleece you. There is nothing about that that interests me. What I have been able maintain is my integrity, what I believe in creatively, and musical experimentation. I’ve had incredible creative freedom and kudos, and I can’t
give a shit “whatI couldn't the industry thinks ” put a price on that.” That’s that then. Oh, hang on, no it isn’t... “Also I’ve been doing this for nearly 40 years. Those girls have got nearly 20 years; I’ve got 40.” She’s right, though. Arena started singing on Oz TV variety show Young Talent Time as a child, along with Dannii Minogue, who she is still in touch with. And it was by choice that Arena didn’t sign on the ‘big-time’ line. Back in the ’90s Tommy Mottola, then-head of Sony, as well as Mariah Carey’s manager and husband, was ready to pitch Arena to America as the Australian Celine Dion, but Arena was going through a divorce and didn’t feel like the time was right. “I just think that the universe plays a role when it needs to play a role and it shows itself either by making your path really difficult, or making the elements that surround you unachievable. Perhaps by putting you in the wrong human energies; and my group of people at the time... it was not a TNTMAGAZINE.COM

particularly harmonious period for me. So the button could have been pressed, but it would have come at a cost. I wasn’t prepared to pay that cost.” Any regrets? “No. I’m really glad that the train derailed because I wouldn’t have had the cultural encounters and fantastic collaborations that I have had, what with America being what it is. My musical tapestry is something I would never trade in for anything else. I feel so blessed to have had the journey that I’ve had, and it just continues to be more interesting as each day goes by.” It does seem Arena has a good instinct for these things. The universe certainly seems to be agreeing with her decision to make her big comeback now. “It’s really great to come into a place I’ve wanted to work in for ages, but I didn’t think the timing was right for different reasons. I believe very heavily that there’s a right time for everything. When you’re writing something and you’re thinking ‘I’d really love to release this here or there, or I think this would be appropriate for this or that market’; what you think, what you feel, what you see, is not a mission that is necessarily shared by others. That’s the way it goes.” So why now? “I’ve refined my craft. I’m probably a little bit like a bloody wine, really, in a cellar. But some wines you’ve got to drink (laughs). Also the right synergies of people have come together – I have a great little family that I believe in. Here in the UK, over in Oz, in France... we’re starting to grow teams and it’s just really gorgeous. It’s nice because we’re slowly building on that and forging relationships that are about evolution, not impact: get in and get out. It’s none of that.” The result is an album of original, honest song writing with pop ballad melodies. “I am proud of it. I’m proud of its honesty. And I’m proud that people can find a connection with it. That’s all you can hope for, that people can identify. Then it’s completely up to the listener to interpret that sentiment in a way that they want to.” But in an industry that today thrives on the shock and sex factor, can Arena’s

sentimentality for honesty and connection survive? “I couldn’t give a shit what the industry thinks, and that’s really the honest truth. And that’s with all due respect to everybody too. I think that at my age you cannot be sitting there motivated by, and do things to surprise, the industry; you have to do them for yourself.” And what does she think of today’s pop stars such as Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus? “Justin Beiber could be my son, as Miley Cyrus could be my daughter. [But] I think if they were my children, they probably wouldn’t feel the need to have to expose themselves and leave themselves with nowhere to go. My kids wouldn’t behave like that. You’ve got to seriously question what a 21-year-old’s motivation is when she’s gyrating on something. My greatest concern as a parent is the fact that there is so little left to the imagination. We tend to give people everything, so they don’t have to make up their minds, they don’t have to use their imagination to draw their own conclusions. Is there anything to learn in that?” Arguably, though, Arena’s album promo shots are pretty sexy: basques, satin and PVC (“elegant PVC”, Arena interjects). Has she not intentionally sexed up her image to fit in? “For me, stylistically I do what I do. I don’t follow anything. I have a great appreciation for design and aesthetics. My mother was a dressmaker and always made beautiful clothes; I’ve lived in France for a long time, I’m from a line of Italians – Italian women have always known how to dress, French women know how to dress. It’s just a part of a culture. It’s not anything that I go out of my way to manipulate. I wear what I think is right for that situation.” And how about the controversial shot of her smoking on the cover of Good Weekend magazine? “At the end of the day, people smoke and LIFE SAVERS people know that it’s bad for you. This presumptuousness of people always SINS OF THE FATHER going, ‘you can’t possibly highlight that’... What do you mean? It’s art at the end of the day. It’s just a photo with a woman smoking in it. What’s the problem? It’s okay for you guys to show women half naked and men behaving in a very inappropriate fashion and yet you’re pointing the finger at me – please, get your shit together.” Whether you agree with her or not, you can’t argue that Arena says exactly what she thinks, and this translates into her music: “I’ve always been pretty revelatory when it comes to my work. Some people like it, some people don’t, and that’s fine. I’m just interested in change. I’ve never been interested in just giving people more of the same as that’s not what I’m attracted to.” So she’s honest, evolving, and has the ability to wear PVC like a lady. Perhaps Tina Arena is just what the music industry needs right now after all... Tina Arena’s new album RESET is released November 3 on Decca/Universal. She is also playing an exclusive London gig on November 6 at St John At Hackney Church.

Luke Arnold Emmy-award-winning pirate drama Black Sails is pitched as the new Game of Thrones. We chat to its Australian star(rrrr) who plays John Silver to find out more INTERVIEW CAROLINE GARNAR
For those who are yet to hear about it, what can we expect from Black Sails? It’s a realistic, gritty pirate adventure that mixes historic pirates with the characters of Treasure Island. It’s a character-driven adventure on the high seas. The show is pitching itself against Game of Thrones, and it shares director, Neil Marshall. This is a brave move as GoT has been so hugely successful. Do you believe Black Sails will be as big? There is definitely room for more than one big budget action adventure television show. I am a huge Game of Thrones fan, but when I see John Snow trudging through the ice, it does make me happy our show is set in the Bahamas.
Black Sails has been dubbed as a ‘certified binge show’. Do you think its release as a DVD box set will help lure in those who are yet to download it? Absolutely. This is not a simple story of buried treasure, it’s got a huge cast of characters who are always turning on each other, backstabbing, changing alliances. The show never goes where you think it will. And since there are only eight episodes in the first season, it’s hard not to drive through them in one sitting. What box sets have you lost whole days on the sofa with? I lost a weekend recently to True Detective. And I’ve recently gone back and started watching The Wire. That will eat some hours very easily. Tell us about your character in the show, John Silver... When we meet Silver he’s no pirate. Just a self-serving chancer who’s stumbled across a potential prize. He gets sucked up into the pirate world and always needs to be one step ahead to avoid getting run through. 36

Photo: Supplied
Michael Bay is an executive producer for the show – are there lots of impressive effects? Absolutely. We just won an Emmy for the visual and special effects. The first time I saw a completed episode it blew my mind.
You are already an accomplished swordsman. How did this come about and did it help you land this part? I learnt sword fighting to play Romeo in a small production, and then kept up my training for a while. I ended up working on PJ Hogan’s Peter Pan film while I was still at high school. Unfortunately John Silver is not yet the most accomplished fighter, so I haven’t been able to draw on those skills just yet... Jack Sparrow helped make pirates sexy – do you think you rock it too? On Black Sails we leave the eyeliner at home, but it’s definitely a sexy show. I don’t feel sexy on set though. Generally just sweaty, dirty, salty and sore. There are lots of sex scenes in Black Sails – are you involved in any of them?
If so, any awkwardness? In the first episode there is a scene in a brothel. It’s kind of Silver’s initiation into the island. We had a lot of fun and it wasn’t really that awkward in the end.
Black Sails was mostly filmed in Cape Town. How did you enjoy your time there? It’s a beautiful place. The weather is fantastic and the scenery is wonderful. The perfect place to set up our pirate life. If you were a pirate, what would your treasure be? Some quality aged rum. Black Sails is available on DVD and Blu-Ray from September 29. starz.com

It’s Halloween this month, so zombies, ghosts and ghouls will soon be filling the streets. But if you’re into the weird and wonderful all year round, and you want a unique twist to your holiday, make sure you check out some of these freaky attractions around the world. From pickled animals at an abandoned veterinary school to creepy catacombs where the walls are lined with mummies, Faith Norris from lowcostholidays.com gives the lowdown on the most bonechilling, stomach-churning and darn right bizarre attractions found across the globe. Enjoy...

– the death simulator – now you can experience it first-hand! Shanghai’s Samadhi 4D Experience of Death is a morbid game, allowing players to experience death and, if you fail a particular challenge, a fake cremation. Stuffed into a coffin and loaded in to a faux cremator, hot air and light projections simulate a cremation before you’re reborn through a womblike capsule. The founders of this attraction, Ding Rui and Huang Wei-Ping, carried out extensive research to make the experience as realistic as possible, even going through a real crematorium – with the flames turned off! Cremation awaits 50% of Chinese citizens after death and the founders say realism is essential to provoke participants into thinking about life and death. Eek.

VET SCHOOL, BELGIUM
BODIES, LAS VEGAS
Once a thriving educational institution, years of neglect has turned this veterinary school into a dusty, abandoned shell with shelves full of jars of partially preserved animals. As it’s pretty common to come across unusual items such as the head of a calf joined with the leg of a cat, the abandoned school is often compared to Dr Frankenstein’s lab. It’s also frequently called the Horror Labs as wondering around feels like you’ve stepped straight into a horror film.
At this exhibition you’ll be able to gawp at 13 whole bodies and 250 organs. The polymer preservation process is a revolutionary technique in which human tissue is permanently preserved using liquid silicone. All water is removed from the specimens before veins are injected with silicon to make a mold of the human form. The end result is a detailed view of the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. The exhibition is at the Luxor Hotel and Casino on Las Vegas Boulevard. Go before lunch.

CATACOMBS, ITALY
ISLAND OF DOLLS, MEXICO
Found on the outskirts of Palermo City, the Capuchin Catacombs are home to the remains of around 8,000 mummies. The practice began after monks discovered a mysterious preservative that helped to mummify the dead within the walls of the catacombs. The preserved bodies, which range in date from the late 1500s to 1920s, are dressed in their best clothes and are either lying in a coffin or hung from a hook by their necks. Dark corridors of ghoulish skeletons with empty eye sockets and peeling faces... this human library is not for the fainthearted.
Known locally as La Isla de las Muñecas, this eerie island is covered with limbless, headless dolls; hanging from trees, scattered on the ground, attached to stakes – they’re everywhere. The island was once property to a local farmer, called Don Julián Santana, who witnessed a little girl drown in the canals surrounding the island. He thought the girl’s spirit haunted the island, so he began collecting dolls and adorning the place with them to protect himself. Don Julián’s cousin, who now owns the island, claims the dolls come alive at night and whisper to each other.

EUROPE’S WEIRDEST MUSEUMS PHALLOLOGICAL MUSEUM, REYKJAVIK
With more than 280 penises on display, this collection in Reykjavik is an impressive ode to the love muscle. Cocks from a wide range of land and sea mammals – whales, seals, polar bears, even homo sapiens – jut out of the walls, recline resplendently in display cases and, in some instances, are squashed unkindly into jars. AVANOS HAIR MUSEUM, CAPPADOCIA
This incredibly creepy accumulation of women’s hair, adorning the walls and hanging from the ceiling of a cave in Turkey’s Central Antolia, was curated by potter/oddball Galip Körükçü. He began the project in 1979 and today has 16,000 hair samples donated by willing ladies, earning him a Guinness World Record. CURRYWURST MUSEUM, BERLIN
Everyone knows the Germans love their sausage, but did you know this pork lust extends to an entire museum devoted to currywurst? The exhibit claims to take you on a sensory journey through the best of the wurst, taking in sniffing stations and a mock sausage stand, where you can experience what it would feel like to serve the snack. EXPERIENCETRAVEL
Not all of us skied out of the womb – some of us need a little help. After 30 years on this earth, Caroline Garnar learnt to ski and is here to tell the tale... just about “Can you show me how to do the snow plough again?” “No, you learnt it yesterday; you know how to do it.” “Yeah but it’s how you stop, so it’s pretty important. I really think I need a refresher.” “No, you will remember, just go.” Right... I peer down the slope, which is probably no steeper than a wheelchair ramp, but looks like a few shades off a sheer drop to me. I steel myself and ease away from my safe patch of flat ground. Within seconds I’ve rapidly gained speed and can feel panic setting in. Whizzing past my fellow learners, they wave me on thinking I must have got the hang of it as I’m going so quickly... they’re wrong. I’ve completely lost control. I desperately try to remember the slow plough: bend my knees, lean forwards and point my skis together... but I’m not slowing down. As I see an even bigger slope looming, I give up and sacrifice myself to the snow gods, throwing myself to the ground, skis akimbo and snow shovelled down the back of my jacket. I am learning to ski in Les Arcs 1950 in the French Alps. It’s my second day of morning lessons, and the short
beginner’s slope, where I confidently weaved down the slight gradient on the first day, feels like a million years ago as everything I thought I had learnt has disappeared, along with my confidence and grace, which I am sure I had before – or maybe not. In Europe, many kids are taught how to ski as soon as they can stand on two legs (which is why every time our French instructor says, “come on, it’s easy,” I want to punch him in the face). When I was little, I was too busy at the beach to be worried about trying to catch the snow when it occasionally sprinkled itself on Thredbo. But I’ve water-skied, so how different can skiing on snow be? As it turns out, very. For starters, you’re going downhill. Every instinct in my body wants to lean away from the slope, but that causes you to lose balance. Then there are the ski boots, which feel like two lumps of concrete strapped to my feet, and the long, thin skis are constantly threatening to send my legs in opposite directions; forcing the rest of my body to choose sides or risk becoming a Damien Hurst-esque work of art. But Max, our instructor, doesn’t put up with any shit, and if you learn by
being thrown in at the deep end, then a French instructor is your man. To be fair, we are a tricky group. Three of us take to skiing like a duck to water and are weaving off-piste by day three. I am not one of these people. No, my journey is a bit of a rollercoaster... Day one, I am just so in awe of our surroundings that Max could have pushed me down the black run and I wouldn’t have cared (ish). Arriving in Les Arcs 1950 is like shrinking down Alice in Wonderlandstyle and finding yourself in a snow globe. The stunning iced mountains glisten in the morning light, the gableroofed lodges could be built out of gingerbread, and colourfully dressed skiers and boarders weave their way around you, excitedly making their way to their suited run, with 425km of blue, red and black runs on offer at the ski-in, ski-out resort. It is almost like visiting a different planet: one you had read about in school and had heard your friends talk about, but you have no idea how incredible it is until you see it for yourself. Heading to the beginner’s slope, we meet fiery Frenchman Max, who teaches us how to simply move about in our skis, put them on and take them off, and

EXPERIENCETRAVEL WHERE TO STAY Les Arcs 1950 is a village of lodge accommodation by Pierre et Vacances. This means your apartment building is equipped with lockers for your equipment so you can ski right out from your doorstep, and everything is at your gloved fingertips. The apartments range from studios for two people to four-bedroom affairs that can sleep 10. Rooms are cosily furnished, with big beds, soft lighting, sofas and a country cottage-style fully equipped kitchen. You also get a little balcony, if you can brave the cold. There is a huge Cinq Mondes Deep Nature Spa, with two levels containing a pool carved into the mountain itself, heated sensory showers, a sauna, hammam and a Jacuzzi bubbling away outside in the snow, naturally. Seven nights at Pierre &Vacances Le Village starts from £835 for a one-bedroom apartment sleeping four. ernalow.co.uk control our speed with the good-old snow plough. Trundling up the ‘magic carpet’ lift (like an uphill travelator), at 30 I am one of the oldest there, as French, German and Russian kids barely out of the womb whiz about me like lemmings. I have a go at applying what I’ve learnt and make my way down the slope... and I’m thrilled to find I reach the bottom intact. I just skied! I’m quite happy to spend the rest of the morning hanging out with the kids making my way up and down the slope, already imagining myself winning gold at the next winter Olympics. The next day, as you know, is a different story. Taking us straight onto the blue run, I feel like Bambi on ice again and just can’t get control of my skis. It doesn’t get much better throughout the day, particularly as it snows heavily, meaning our vision is poor, the snow is harder to ski on, and it is bloody cold. Feeling disheartened, my Olympic hopes temporarily dashed, it is with trepidation that I head up the mountain on day three. But then something clicks. And, for once, it’s not my joints. Max shows me how to shift my weight from one leg to the other, sending me in ‘S’ shapes down the mountain. If I feel like I am going too quickly, I keep my weight on the bottom leg until I turn slightly up-slope to slow myself down. I’ve got it. I’m skiing! The sense of achievement is awesome, particularly as I am clearly far from being a natural and really had to work at it. I’d even managed to do it without punching Max in the face; instead I give him a big hug at the end of day three’s lesson. Perhaps his method of teaching isn’t so bad after all... To reward ourselves, our group head up to the highest point of the mountain and look out from the viewing platform over Les Arcs. With the sight of majestic mountain peaks smothered in snow coupled with the thrill of having learnt how to ski, I quite literally feel on top of the world.
Ski lessons with Spirit by Evolution 2 start from €179 (£142) for six morning lessons (2.5 hours each). Six days’ ski hire with boots starts from £58 (+£10 for helmet). spirit1950.com 44

WHERE TO EAT Look for the big red cow outside La Vache Rouge (French for, funnily enough, red cow), which specialises in, funnily enough, pork. Not really, beef. Tuck into mighty steaks, cooked to perfection, among cow print chairs and tables. For a traditional Savoyard tartiflette – a pan of sliced potatoes, ham and cheese – head for the La Perce Neige, and wear elasticated trousers. Or, for a really sophisticated night of gorgeously gourmet proportions, try Le Table des Lys. During the day, be sure to seek out the yurt in the snow, where you can duck in for some mulled wine with ham and cheese by the fire. For a mid-piste refresher, pull into The Bulle Café at the bottom of the Arcabulle lift for a slice of pizza while looking out at the 360° views.
WHERE TO PARTY Les Arcs 1950 is relatively quiet, although you can get a cable car to Les Arcs 2000 just up the mountain, where there’s a bowling alley, a bunch of bars and a club or two. Admittedly we were too worn out, bumped and bruised to head out at night, hitting the hay after a hearty meal and a few quiet ones at George’s Wine Bar, owned by a friendly Scot. However, on a high after our last day of skiing, we nearly gave up finding any form of nightlife in 1950 before we happened across O’Chaud . In we went for ‘one drink’ and out we came some five hours later, stumbling back to our apartments having done countless shots of the local liqueur, genepy, seen an awesome live singer whose stage was also the bar, and various other hazy goings-on that I have wisely chosen to forget. Enjoy. arc1950.com.

Make tracks Train travel is fast becoming the transport of choice for skiers and boarders – why fly when you can watch the world go by?
This updated article is from the TNT Archives. It was originally written by Helen Elfer
There’s something disorientating about being in one country, getting into a small box with wings for a few hours, and then stepping out in a completely different place. We’re not saying it’s a bad thing, but there’s something dreamlike about it and you can’t help but feel like you’ve missed out on something. After all, you’ve passed over countries you’ve never visited, sites you’ve never seen, and you missed all of it because you were watching Friends reruns on a screen the size of a book cover. Train travel immerses you in the journey: you can recline in your much-roomier-than-an-aeroplane-chair seat, plug your iPod in, and watch the stunning scenery pass you by. Skiers and boarders can see the rolling fields of rural France climb up into mountains, soon to be dusted with snow as you head for your chosen Alpine resort. When you’ve arrived at your destination you already feel like you’ve seen more of the world, without spending loads of money or making much effort: it’s like the travel equivalent of window shopping. If all this sounds like a lot of crap to you, you can always book an overnight train journey and save yourself on accommodation for the night. This also means you can hit the slopes as soon as you arrive. But we reckon a day-time train trip beats the hell out of a few hours in a plane. After all the saying goes ‘It is not the destination, but the journey’; although these destinations are pretty damn cool, too...
Alpe d’Huez, France From London to the slopes in: eight hours, 20 minutes There’s almost always bright sunshine over the 250km of terrain at Alpe D’Huez, where four distinct skiing sectors are linked by lifts. First-timers will find the decent network of beginner slopes great to practice on, while everyone else can swish speedily down the long reds at Signal l’Homme. Apres ski: There are plenty of bars to while away the evenings in, along with live music venues and late-night clubs. Try the friendly O’Bar (Chalet La Clé, Route d’Huez) for a well-earned tipple or two after a day on the slopes. Chalet du Lac Besson ( 33 476 80 65 37) is by the frozen lake above a cross-country track. It can only be reached on skis or by snowmobile; well worth a visit for grills over an open fire. Recommended route: Depart St Pancras on the 7.31am
Eurostar, change in Paris and take the 12.41pm TGV, arriving Grenoble at 3.37pm; then a 75-minute transfer. alpedhuez.com
Montgenèvre, France From London to the slopes in: nine hours, 15 minutes Pretty, unpretentious and good value, Montegenèvre is highly recommended for first-time skiers because of the bright and sunny nursery slopes that lie right by the village. There’s plenty of off-piste action when it snows in the Gondrans bowl, Rocher de l’Aigle and off the Col de l’Alpet – take a guide to show you the best routes. Montegenèvre has a solid boarding scene, too. Many visitors opt for group lessons with ESF Mongenevre, which start from around £124 per person (six lots of two-and-a-half-hours’ tuition, morning or afternoons). ski-school-montgenevre.co.uk Apres ski: It’s all about old-world charm rather than hardcore partying here, so spend your evenings making the most of the local restaurants. Try Le Capitaine’s (La Praya, 33 492 21 89 84) wood-fired pizzas, or if you’ve cash to splash, gourmet grub at La Table Blanche. hotellechaletblanc.com A great place to stay is the Hotel Alpis Cottia, which is a cosy spot in the heart of the village. Rooms start from £40 per night. hotelalpiscottia.com Recommended route: Depart St Pancras on the 9.31am Eurostar, change in Paris and take the 3.24pm TGV, arriving Oulx at 7.21pm; then a 25-minute taxi ride. Book rail travel with Rail Europe (raileurope.co.uk). montgenevre.com
Sauze d’Oulx, Italy From London to the slopes in: nine hours, 15 minutes Intrepid? Adventurous? Like to get off-the-beaten piste? You’ll go gaga for this area, as there are plenty of secret forest routes local guides can help you discover. Sauze d’Oulx’s tree-lined red runs are best suited to intermediate skiers, but advanced skiers can make the easy connection to Sestriere and the black runs at the top of Mount Motta and Mount Sises. Apres ski: This Italian village with its sweetly cobbled streets used to be known as ‘Ibiza-in-the-snow’. This thought might fill you with excitement or horror, but either way, the resort is still quite a boozy fave with Brits. That said, Sauze d’Oulx is more cocktails than clubbing these days, so start off the ›› TNTMAGAZINE.COM

night with a few aperitivi at Caffe della Seggiovia (Piazza Assietta 4). Recommended route: Depart St Pancras on the 9.31am Eurostar, change in Paris and take the 3.24pm TGV, arriving at Oulx at 7.31pm; then it’s a 15-minute taxi ride. Again, try booking via raileurope.co.uk. sauzeonline.com
Söll, Austria From London to the slopes in: 18 hours If you’re planning a trip with mates of mixed skiing ability, Söll is a pretty good bet. The Ski Welt is the largest linked ski area in Austria, and has plenty of easy blues for beginners and harder reds for the more experienced. Advanced skiers will have to look a little harder to find a challenge, but there are some very steep runs at the Hohe Salve. Night skiing is huge here and the floodlit run from Hochsöll down to Söll is nothing short of exhilarating. Apres ski: The slopes here might be gentle, but the nightlife is quite the opposite. This cutesy Tirolean village gets raucous later and you’ll find skiers dancing on the tables at Moonlight Bar and other spots around town practically every night of the week. There must be something in the schnapps. moonlightbar-soell.com Recommended route: Depart St Pancras on the 3.31pm Eurostar, change in Paris and take the 8.20pm City Night Line sleeper train, arriving Worgl at 9.41am, then a 15-minute taxi ride. Book with Deutsche Bahn from £215 return in a sixberth couchette (bahn.com). wilderkaiser.info 52

A ride on the Glacier Express is just a one-day trip, taking you from St Moritz to Zermatt, but the journey offers some of Switzerland’s finest panoramas. swisspasses.com INDIAN MAHARAJA DECCAN ODYSSEY Route: Mumbai to Delhi The epitome of luxury train travel, there’s a gym, beauty salon and massage centre on board, oh, and a number of well-stocked bars. The route connects Mumbai and Delhi via Rajasthan, so your journey could include cave excursions at Ajanta, a jungle safari at Sawai Madhopur and of course, that all important photo op at the Taj Mahal. theindianmaharaja.co.in EXPEDITION Route: Cuzco to Machu Picchu This three-hour journey begins in Poroy (eight miles from Cuzco) before winding through the Sacred Valley, the Andean foothills, and then following the path of the Urubamba river. FESTIVAL GUIDE
UP HELLY AA, SHETLAND From a distance, they look like a terrifying invading force about to raze the town; a noisy thousand-strong army of alcohol-fuelled men each carrying a flaming torch. The smell of paraffin fills the air and the light of their torches makes the night sky glow over Lerwick as they shout and march through the town. Then they come closer and you see they’re not just Vikings, but a procession of tutu-wearing ballerinas, penguins, vampires, Canadian Mounties, apes and Pussycat Dolls with skimpy gold and pink Lycra outfits stretched tight over their burly Shetlander bodies and beer guts – not quite so scary. The parade is just one part of Shetland’s annual Up Helly Aa festival. At 10am, the festival kicks off with the Viking leader (or ‘Jarl’) leading the 50 54

‘guizer’ squads and pipe and brass bands through the town, unveiling a Viking galley which has been several months in the making. There’s a Firey Sessions concert in the afternoon at the Garrison Theatre, where local musicians, including instrument-swapping musical families, show why Shetland and Scotland’s folk music has a worldwide reputation. The evening parade, though, is when things really start to get going. The town gathers to watch the torch-lit procession of guizers as they arrive at the local park and encircle the specially made galley from earlier. They boisterously sing Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’ and a traditional Up Helly Aa song, then throw their torches onto the boat. We watch it ‘burn, burn, burn’, children and teenagers in horned helmets running around the flaming centrepiece as the crowd
disperses to drink and dance at parties around the town. It’s not easy to get into one of the parties, as they are for locals rather than tourists, so I spend the night and early hours of the morning at the Town Hall. Here, knights joust, penguins boogie, Vikings sing ‘Ring of Fire’ again at the top of their voices and a gang of giant monkeys dry-hump the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey in a scene that would make Stanley Kubrick turn in his grave. Beers and whiskies are drunk and the party carries on towards dawn. Next morning, a little bleary-eyed, I look out of my window. Staggering down the street is a bearded ‘Pussycat Doll’ in a yellow PVC skirt and a giant penguin carrying his head under his arm, on the hunt for one last drink – not something I expect to see again in a hurry...

UP HELLY AA WITH HAGGIS HOW DID IT BEGIN?
WHAT TO EXPECT
The highlight of the local calendar, Upp Helly Aa has been taking over Lerwick every year on the last Tuesday of January (Old Yule) since the 1880s. Traditions such as ‘guizing’ (dressing up), drinking, brawling and rolling burning tar barrels would take place across the town. Not much has changed, but since the 1960s, it’s become more of a celebration of the island’s Norse history (Vikings settled here in the ninth century after invading the islands). Basically, though, it’s a big piss-up; so much so that the following Wednesday is a public holiday ‘to allow for recovery’.
Up Helly Aa is still highly valued as a community event for local friends and families to get together, rather than being a tourist attraction. Tickets for the Town Hall are the only official tickets sold to visitors, though it’s sometimes possible to arrange entry to private parties. No matter what, you can’t just turn up and party – get a ticket. If you bag a ticket for one of the halls, the 50 guizer squads make their way around all the halls over the course of the night to perform a short routine – dance, comedy, magic, drama or a chaotic drunken mix of all four.
WHAT ELSE?
NEED TO KNOW
Lerwick’s a small town, so it’s easy to explore on foot. Buses go to other places of interest on Shetland – timetables are available from the Tourist Information Centre in Lerwick. It’s going to be cold in January, but activity junkies should make the most of the rugged coastline and go sea kayaking, canyoning, diving and even surfing (just wear a thick wetsuit!). The Shetland Islands are rich in history. On your way back to the airport, stop off at Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement, which dates back 4,000 years. The pretty Quendale Watermill is also worth a stop as it demonstrates the area’s industrial heritage, and at the Shetland Crofthouse Museum you can see how Shetlanders lived in 1870.
Lerwick is the capital of the Shetland Islands, a small archipelago north-east of Scotland’s coast. Flybe (flybe.com) has direct daily routes to Sumburgh from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness, with connecting flights available from Gatwick and Heathrow. There are daily ferries to Shetland from Aberdeen operated by Northlink Ferries (0845 6000 449; northlinkferries.co.uk). For tickets for Town Hall or private parties, contact the Up Helly Aa committee on information@uphellyaa. org. Tickets are available from midDecember. Some accommodation providers offer hall tickets as part of festival packages. uphellyaa.org; visitshetland.com

Venture north taking in the area of the ancient Tingwall parliament before returning on the overnight ferry back to the mainland. DAY 5: RETURN TO EDINBURGH

Turkey is a whirlwind tour for the senses as tastes, smells and sights from the Middle East to the Balkans to Central Asia collide. If you were lucky enough to bag a ticket for the 100th Anzac anniversary in Gallipoli on April 25 2015, or even if you weren’t, you should take the time to explore this gorgeous country. Crumbling ancient Hittite temples and Roman monuments dot the skyline which is peppered each evening by the call to prayer, making you feel as though you are a million miles away. Seasoned kofte (grilled meat) sizzles on street corners as vendors lug crates of aromatic teas and rare spices behind them on old bicycles. Saffron, worth more than gold in most of the world, goes for small change here – just a whisper of the far-flung extravagance you can enjoy in this surprisingly nearby part of the world. Beyond the endless history and culture is the rustic and undeveloped coast, which stretches, empty, for miles along

This is the biggest city in Turkey (though not the capital); the cracks and crevices in the crumbling Roman monuments the bath-water warm Mediterranean Sea. There are also beach towns for downtime where neon lights, karaoke and bottomless margaritas keep the balmy nights alive. The tourism industry in Turkey is not as developed as it is in its European holiday counterparts, making a visit that bit more exciting – and challenging. However, the country is known for unending hospitality and warmth, which more than makes up for buses that don’t run and chaotic immigration queues. Flights to Turkey start at £88 and the main travel hubs are Istanbul, Dalaman, Antalaya, Bodrum, Izmir and Ankara. Domestic flights are the best option for long-distance travel. There is also a railway but constant improvement means routes are often closed, so it’s important to check online before you make your plans. Coaches are a good alternative and most cities have easy-to-find ticket booths where you can book in advance. If you want all the hard work done for you, Oasis Overland TNTMAGAZINE.COM

A GUIDE TO TURKEY alongside fantasy-like minarets and domed mosques sum up the country’s exotic past. Old-world opulence is also captured in the city’s famous marble baths, while the booming business district and vibrant art scene continues to propel Istanbul up the fashion ranks. THINGS TO DO Some of the most extravagant and ornate ancient structures in the world are here – from the 6thcentury basilica cistern, that once bought drinking water into Istanbul via an upside-down head of Medusa, to the famous Hagia Sophia, which was once a temple, but is now a breathtaking museum. In 2011, the most ornate of the Ottoman baths, Sultan hammam, opened to the public – the endless marble and indoor waterfalls is something not to miss. GOING OUT Istanbul is crammed full of massive clubs and live music. Trendy bars to start the night can be found in the suburb of Beyoglu. Students and more arty-types flock to Barlar Sokak (known as ‘bar street’) on the city’s Asian side. And when the clock strikes 12, big clubs such as Reina and Blackk on the Bosphorus start their repertoire of house and electro. WHERE TO STAY World House Hostel is located right near the bars of Beyoglu and has very well-priced rooms at £9 a night. Another good find is Tan Hotel, which is located in the centre of the city, and has a roof terrace with dramatic views. Private rooms with (a hearty) breakfast included go for £55 a night. Cappadocia

Urgup, Goreme and Ilhara Valley are some of the bigger towns in the area, and are great bases from which to explore. THINGS TO DO This is the place to go for adventure activities with a balloon ride over the surreal moonscape topping the list. Epic treks to cliff-carved ruins, climbing trips and ATV rides through the rocky valleys can be booked at tour companies on site. NIGHTLIFE Cappadocia is better enjoyed during the day. However each town boasts a number of holes in the wall (literally) where you can soak up a beer or two. WHERE TO STAY: Although there are no longer cave dwellers here, tourists can dine and sleep in underground structures and rooms carved into rocks that once made up entire subterranean villages. Travellers’ Cave Pension is a budget option at £14 a night. For £56 you can enjoy some rock-chic at Koza Cave Hotel. Turquoise Coast

This stretch of coastline didn’t get its name for nothing – miles of bright blue water on the south-western edge of Turkey laps up against white-sand beaches making it the perfect place to relax. Although the glitterati park their boats here, the country’s Mediterranean and Aegean coast is far less hyped up than its European counterparts. THINGS TO DO Resort destinations range from glamorous yachting ports to small fishing villages. Laid-back Dalyan has great access to medicinal mud baths and hot springs via boat. Oludeniz is known for having the most stunning beaches in the region while Fethiye is built on ancient ruins.
A GUIDE TO TURKEY NIGHTLIFE Bodrum has some of the flashiest clubs in Turkey; Halikarnas is the biggest open-air nightclub in the world, its laser lights sweep across the harbour as the jet set make their move. Budget bars can be found in smaller towns such as Dalyan and Patara. WHERE TO STAY Again, the cheaper options can be found in the smaller towns; Monarch.co.uk is a good place to begin the hunt with a pretty extensive list of place to stay all over the region. Renting villas along this azure shoreline is also much cheaper than you’d think so it’s worth researching. Ephesus Considered one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World, Ephesus has some of the most breath-taking ruins in Europe – and even after 150 years of excavation, only a quarter of the Ancient Greek remains have actually been unearthed. THINGS TO DO: Most people who visit Ephesus stay in hotels on the outskirts and get there via bus. The ancient city’s main claim to fame was the Temple of Goddesses, which was four times the size of the Parthenon in Athens. Today, just a few columns remain but alongside tiered amphitheatres, colonnades and magnificent baths, you can get a sense of its former splendour. Organised tours can be arranged at info centres in Selcuk but you can also visit solo. NIGHTLIFE Though the Ancient Greeks probably once enjoyed a pumping nightlife it is of course no more. Ephesus is for day trips now so a tipple is best enjoyed at your hotel bar. WHERE TO STAY Selcuk is less than inspiring, but its close proximity to the ruins (2km away) means it’s the best option for weekend trippers. Vardar Family Pension is conveniently located just near the bus station and costs only £9 a night. For a more beautiful stay, you can head to the village of Sirince which is 8km from Ephesus but has more boutique hotels such as Nisanyan which has a marble swimming pool (£89 a night). Black Sea Coast The Black Sea Coast in the north is not as well known as the Aegean and Mediterranean shores, but the landscape is dramatic and the beaches here are virtually untouched. There are also incredible ruins to explore – and discover, as you may well be the first visitors! THINGS TO DO This journey is for hardened adventurers, with rough terrain melding in to unwieldy cities where cultures collide as you near Iran and Syria. Despite its remote location, Asmara was the first resort town in Turkey. Built on ancient ruins you can sun yourself on the beach overlooked by a Roman castle. Dramatic Sinop is also worth a visit with beaches either side. NIGHTLIFE The town of Giresun has the best nightlife with bars frequented by locals and tourists alike clustered in the centre of the city. Seafront eatery, Mustafa Amganin Yeri in Amasra attracts visitors from all over. WHERE TO STAY You can get more for your money here, although some of the hotels could do with modernising. Gunter Seher Hotel in Amasra is just 100m from the ocean and has an outdoor pool all for £42 night. Efua Hostel in Sinop costs £35 a night and has magnificent views of the sea and barbecue facilities on the large terrace.
The insider's guide Meet Dave, aka Dragon, coined after an unfortunate nosebleed from a particularly hot currywurst in Germany. A trip leader for Topdeck who thinks he has the best job in the world (he does), Dave takes Topdeck’s passengers from London to the bridge of Asia (literally) and back again. One of his favourite cities is Istanbul, and here are his tips for you to get the best out this Bosphorus gem. 1. Get onto the rooftops of the Grand Bazaar. There are a couple of sneaky stairways that are hidden away behind certain shop fronts. If you can find them, be sure to go up because you can get some amazing views from the top – it’s like the opening scene of the James Bond film, Skyfall. 2. Have a hammam. This can sometimes seem like an intimidating experience but it is thoroughly worth it. Many are situated in beautiful old Ottoman buildings in Sultanahmet. Depending on where you go, you will be able to choose what type of massage you get. The attendants can be pretty vigorous but you will leave feeling completely rejuvenated. 3. Istanbul is a busy place and the hustle and bustle can be a bit overwhelming sometimes. A trip out to the Princes Islands can be a great way to relax for an afternoon. This group of islands is a short boat ride from the city but feels like it’s a million miles away. 4. Despite being in a predominantly Islamic country, Istanbul is very liberal and the city has some incredible nightlife. If you don’t feel like dressing to impress at the super clubs on the Bosphorus, then head to the Beyoglu district. There are some really cool bars that stay open to the early hours. Princes Islands

Beach huts on Aitutaki
Didn’t think you could afford the South Pacific? Well you’re wrong, and many of its islands are great stopovers on the way back to Australia and New Zealand. TNT brings you the paradisal lowdown... COMPILED BY IAN ARMITAGE
Big trips don’t come much bigger than this. We’re talking about the South Pacific – the vast ocean that seems to cover pretty much half the globe, dotted with islands. Because of its vastness, it is almost impossible to summarise it in just a few words other than to say it’s on almost every bucket list, conjuring up images of smiling hula girls swaying their hips in the sunshine, and barefoot islanders living a carefree lifestyle. Fiji and The Cook Islands have long been popular stopovers on the way to or from Australia and New Zealand, but travellers haven’t explored much further for one reason: the price tag. But, while exploring this vast expanse may have previously been out of the reach of mere mortals, now you can afford it. A quick web search will throw up hundreds of deals, you simply have to choose the right destination and right resort. And, as always, we’re here to help... The Cook Islands The Cook Islands are definitely the most affordable destination in the South Pacific. A heavily New Zealandinfluenced culture and an inviting array of natural wonders including coral lagoons, caves, volcanic mountains and lush forests, make it a must-do. There are 15 Cook Islands, all TNTMAGAZINE.COM

BIGTRIP
The Cook Islands are perfect for snorkelling halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii, and they are each very distinct from one another, with your typical luxury resort experiences, forest hiking, and even some deserted islands on offer. What to do: Rarotonga’s Muri Lagoon is a must, as is snorkelling on the Aitutaki (One Foot Island) atoll – which has had a human presence since AD900. For a taste of the islands’ village life, tour the pretty Mauke. A raised coral atoll, its central area lies only about 30 metres above sea level and is full of rich, tropical vegetation. We also recommend exploring the caves of Mangaia, including the burial chamber of the ruler Te Rua Rere. Food and drink: There are three main ethnic groups in the South Pacific – Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian – so the type of cuisine you get depends on which island you visit. Some 90% of Cook Islanders are of either full or partial descent of the native Polynesian people, so for a taste of Polynesian cuisine, enjoy one of the islands’ classic pork-based Umukai feasts (which involves baking food in an underground oven) along with a performance of local traditional dance. Matu rori (sea cucumber, served with lemon and cooked green banana) is another speciality – a sort of spaghetti from the sea. Where to party: When it comes to partying it has to be Rarotonga. Friday is the big night on the island when the clubs and bars can stay open until 2am. But one of the most fun ways of exploring is to take an organised nightlife tour, stopping off at many of the venues around the island. It is a fun party on wheels that gets you mixing with locals and fellow tourists over a drink or on the dance floor. And no 64

Jumping ship Fijian style
BIGTRIP one has to be the designated driver because you get dropped off at your accommodation at the end of the night. Nice (enjoycookislands.com). Where to stay: There are a number of cheap hostels on Rarotonga including Backpackers International Hostel (backpackersinternational.com), which is only a minute’s walk from the beach with dorms from NZ$18 (£9) per person for six nights or more. They have a complimentary international airport pick up, too.
Fiji Right now is the best time to go to Fiji. Sure it’s got the lagoons, the beaches and the laid-back vibe, but the adventurous side of this South Pacific beauty is emerging like a curious puppy. What Fiji has going for it is that it’s an exciting place wrapped up in a peaceful package. And when we say package, we’re not referring to the allinclusive honeymoon and my-first-family-holiday packages that Fiji has been known for in the past. Today, it combines a reasonable price tag with extreme sights, flavours and experiences unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else. What to do: Plant yourself in Nadi and you’ll be greeted by traditional Fijian dancers, ukulele players and adorned with leis – cliché sure, but still awesome. You’ll also be immersed in heady city experiences, including Indian cuisine and a bustling street life. Sign on for a jungle cruise and you’ll experience an entirely different Fiji, including some of the world’s most colourful and entertaining bird-watching. Food and drink: Fiji is home to two distinct cuisines – Fijian (obviously) and Indian. Traditional Fijian dishes include kakoda, a marinated and steamed local fish, and rourou, a dish made from local taro leaf. One of the most popular traditional meals is lovo, the collective name for a feast of fish, meat, vegetables and fruit cooked in covered pits. Seafood also plays a massive part on Fijian menus, thanks to the surrounding South Pacific waters packed with marine life. Whole grilled snapper and tender tuna steaks are good value, delicious and sure to be as fresh as a daisy. When it comes to drink, Fijians aren’t big on booze, but

BIGTRIP if you will the best of French cuisine, prepared with fresh organic produce, with a bit of a Pacific Island twist (coconut, yams and sweet potato for example). But it comes at a price. The big resorts have expensive restaurants, but it’s worth splurging on a fabulous meal every now and then. Cheaper restaurants can be found in the main town. Where to stay: At certain times of the year you can get affordable package deals in one of the big ritzy resorts that include airfares, accommodation and some meals. Check well-known travel sites.
Yasur volcano by night
Befriend the locals in a Fiji village one beverage they savour is kava, made from the pulverised root of a pepper shrub mixed with water. To first-time drinkers, it tastes a little like muddy water and can make your tongue and the back of your throat numb. It is usually consumed at a special kava ceremony, where a traditional dish (sometimes a turtle shell) is filled with the brew and passed around the circle of drinkers. Pssst, it won’t give you crazy visions, despite what you may have read. Where to stay: With so much to explore, Fiji is perfect for backpackers and there is plenty of budget accommodation on offer from Rendezvous Fiji (rendezvousfiji.com), which will set you back about $16 (£9) a night, and Bamboo Beach Hostel (bamboobackpackers.hostel.com) which is just $9pn (£3.50). Vanuatu Vanuatu was colonised by the French but most residents speak English (they also colonised bits of it) as well as Bislama, a Creole mixture of English, French and various dialects of Vanuatu. Efate is the main island, but there are other more remote ones to explore. One of the most popular trips from Efate is Tanna, where volcano enthusiasts can get up close to Yasur, the live volcano. It’s a 40-minute flight from Efate that can be done as a day-trip, but a stay-over is recommended as the volcano is spectacular at nightfall. What to do: The town of Port Vila is basic but the markets are fabulous and full of luscious organic produce as well as the obligatory sarongs and souvenirs, and racks and racks of ‘designer bags’ in a variety of colours. But be warned: the local goods may not pass customs inspection and you’ll have to kiss your grass skirt and coconut shell bikini ensemble goodbye at the airport. Head to the very pretty Mele Cascades, where for a small fee a guide will take you up a hill through the rainforest to the famous waterfall. Also check out the Botanical Gardens. Food and drink: Worryingly, cannibalism was once practised in Vanuatu, with the last case of it reported as recently as the 1960s. Thankfully the food’s improved since then. Imagine 66

Samoa Home to chiefs, churches and spectacular sights, Samoa encapsulates the beauty of simple living and family values. It has it all. Postcard-perfect beaches, vibrant culture and cheap prices. But we think it’s fair to say that, keen rugby fans aside, most people know almost nothing about the 10 islands that comprise Samoa. For years now, Fiji, with its desert island beaches and cheap prices, has been the go-to destination for travellers looking for an idyllic, budget-friendly South Pacific getaway. But times, they are a-changing, and the Samoans are going all out to attract backpackers to their fair shores. Historically more aligned with the US, the powers-that-be have decided it’s time to make a seismic shift and buddy up with their culturally and geographically closer neighbours, Australia and New Zealand. It started a few years back when drivers woke up one day to suddenly discover they had to drive on the left, rather than right-hand side of the road. The next major step happened when Samoa redrew the International Date Line, placing themselves on the Aussie, rather than American, side. The impact of this for people wanting a short break is huge, as Samoa is no longer
BIGTRIP
Alofaaga Blowholes a disorienting 21 hours behind Sydney, but now a much simpler three hours ahead. What to do: The best place to start a Samoan adventure is on the main island of Upolu, which is home to the capital Apia, which is more an amalgamation of sprawling villages than a bustling metropolis. Jump on the ferry to its bigger but quieter neighbour Savai’I, a rainforest-clad isle where beaches sparkle on one side and volcanic peaks rise in the distance on the other.
There are 366 villages in Samoa, each boasting its own chief and at least two spectacular churches. Religion is extremely important and for this reason Sundays are a state of complete shutdown. We recommend a visit to the Alofaaga Blowholes where, on a good day, the water powers through the lava tubes, bursting more than 10 metres into the air. Like everything in Samoa, they come with a good story, with the blowholes symbolising an old Tongan princess who died in Samoa when the country was a Tongan colony. Now, whenever the blowholes, er, blow, it is said to be a sign of her king sending his love. Aww. Food and drink: Apia provides the island’s biggest spread of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. In terms of food, you’ll be munching on plenty of taro leaves, cooked green bananas and raw fish. You’ll also probably have lu’au, one of Samoa’s best-known dishes made from ever-present taro leaves, onion and coconut cream, cooked in an umu, which is a traditional Samoan oven. In terms of drink, coconut juice and other freshly squeezed fruits are cheap and common in Samoa. We advise drinking bottled water too so don’t get tempted by the tap. Where to stay: For a budget night in Samoa, you can stay in what they call beach fales, which are small huts on the beach with a ceiling but no walls. They sound bad right? They’re not. Trust us. Plenty can be booked online including Jane’s Beach Fales (samoa.travel/accommodation/a29/Janes-BeachFales), which cost 80 Samoan Tala, about £20.

DAY ONE MORNING Tuck into the free breakfast at Beijing Downtown Backpackers, a clean, hip and sociable hostel on one of Beijing’s trendiest hutongs, Nan Luo Gu Xiang. Hutongs are the capital’s narrow back alleys, boasting traditional architecture and a more old-world feel. Nan Luo Gu Xiang also manages to pack in thriving bars, live music and indie boutiques.

AFTERNOON Take the subway to Tiananmen Square. See the crowds of tourists and a big red gate hung with a huge portrait of Mao? That’d be the Forbidden City. An enormous complex of Chinese palatial architecture, it covers almost 8,000sqft. Reserved for emperors and their attendants from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, it is ‘forbidden’ because it was out of bounds to the public for almost 500 years. Get yourself a nifty GPS-activated audio guide if you don’t want to shuffle
around in a tour group, and don’t miss the collection of elaborate 18th- and 19th-century clocks. After this, summon your last bit of energy to climb the stairs of the Gate of Heavenly Peace. It’s the same gate you pass through to enter the complex, and affords an impressive panorama over Tiananmen Square. Although you must store your bag in a security locker before ascending, you can take your camera with you, so be sure to grab it. EVENING Dinner at Dadong Roast Duck Restaurant is a must. There are three branches around town, and Beijingers are forever having heated debates about which comes out on top. Two are in the Dongcheng district, the same area as the Downtown Beijing Backpackers hostel, so ask the staff for a recommendation. No matter where you end up, Dadong’s signature Beijing duck is out of this world: even the fat tastes sublime. We’d also recommend

the saliva chicken, which is a lot more appetising than it sounds. Back at the hostel, it’s just a short walk to Houhai Lake, a scenic spot ringed with bars offering shisha and angsty haircuts strumming acoustic guitars. True, it’s overcrowded and shamelessly touristy, but you can’t beat the holiday vibe. End the night at Cargo, not far from Dongcheng on Gongti Xilu near the Chaoyangmen subway stop. Teeming with the trendy Beijing set and sweaty backpackers alike, big-name DJs often play at weekends.
DAY 2 MORNING It’s a punishing start after a night out, but you mustn’t miss the sunrise flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square. Soldiers march through the Gate of Heavenly Peace and across the main road – all traffic is halted – at an apparently rigorously drilled 108 paces per minute, 75cm per pace. The same ceremony takes place again at sunset, but the crowds are more manageable in the morning. You should also start queuing early if you want to get inside Mao’s Mausoleum, right in the centre of Tiananmen Square. The lines are epic and it closes at noon, so early morning is best for a visit. Be warned: you’ll pass by the communist leader’s preserved ‘body’ in a matter of seconds. Expect to pay a small fee. Hungry? Grab a Beijing pancake for breakfast at any street food stall. Trust us, this pancake/omelette hybrid is delicious. Then catch a cab to the Summer Palace, in the north-west of town, a seasonal getaway for China’s evidently pampered old emperors. Saunter the pretty gardens at leisure and take to the placid Kunming Lake in a dinky motor-powered boat. AFTERNOON Next up, a trip to Beijing’s 798 Art District (2 and 4 Jiuxianqiao Lu). A vast complex of factory workshopsturned-art galleries, you can spend all afternoon browsing contemporary art. Seek out prints from the Cultural Revolution at 798 Photo Gallery, mixed mediums at Chinese Contemporary
Tiananmen Square Beijing, and conceptual art at Beijing Tokyo Art Projects. EVENING Head back to Dongcheng for dinner with a difference at the tourist trail essential Donghuamen Night Market (Dong’anmen Dajie). Stallholders hawk the likes of grasshoppers and scorpions on sticks to brave/silly travellers. If that doesn’t tempt your tastebuds, more conventional snacks, such as lamb skewers, are available. Next take in an acrobatics show at the century-old Tianqiao Acrobatics Theatre (95 Tianqiao Shichang Jie Chóngwén). Expect eye-watering contortion acts and heaps of high-wire action. Seriously impressive. For a pint with some personality, head to 12sqm (on the corner of Nanluogu Xiang and Fuxiang Hutong), the city’s smallest bar – hence the name. Run by a Chinese-Aussie couple, they do a good line in malt whiskies and cocktails from just £3.50.

A Serbia is best known for the happening EXIT festival (which takes place in mid July each year) and city breaks in edgy Belgrade; but there’s so much more to this captivating country. Serbia offers travellers a great mix of history, outdoor activities and culture. It goes without saying that Belgrade is a must-visit for anyone travelling to Serbia and is most travellers’ first stop as international flights land at the nearby Nikola Tesla airport. While it isn’t Europe’s prettiest city, it is in the running for one of the most exciting. There is a buzzing club scene as the city comes alive at night with hip drinking spots and late-night clubs. For something a bit different, check out the splavovi, a 1km strip of nightspots on river barges. By day, Belgrade is a great place to stroll, people watch and indulge in some café culture. The old town, Stari Grad, and in particular pedestrianised Knez Mihailova, is a great place to start. The city’s star attraction is the Kalemegdan Citadel, the imposing stone fort has seen many battles which the military museum in the fort explores. Also
spend time in the bohemian neighbourhood of Skadarska where there are plenty of quaint restaurants to try. After you’ve sampled city life, get out in the countryside and visit the monasteries of the hills of Fruška Gora, just 100km from Belgrade. There are 16 monasteries which date from 15th-18th century and can be explored by bus, organised tour or for a bit more independence, hire a car. Sremski Karlovci, a village on the edge of Fruška Gora, is a pretty spot with an impressive Orthodox cathedral and baroque fountain. This is also one of Serbia’s wineproducing regions so allow some time to sample the region’s vintages at cellars around the town. Another quaint town worthy of a stopover is Subotica, packed with art nouveau architecture that brings an almost fairytale quality to the town. It is a photographer’s dream. If you’re of the more active persuasion, make for the Tara National Park where there are 20 marked hiking trails, along with kayaking and rafting on the Drina River. The mountainous terrain is dramatic, in particular the Drina Gorge, which is one of the deepest canyons in the world. There’s also skiing in winter in the towns of Kopaonik and Zlatibor. Enjoy your trip!
IT’S SMART TO FOLLOW SUIT(S) Always noticed how some security queues go a lot quicker than the others? Look at the people queuing: families take forever sorting their kids out, so do young groups who have worn every accessory possible to complete their ‘flying to Ibiza to get trashed’ look. My advice? Join the queue of business travellers. They’ll have minimal luggage and will have done this enough times to know the drill, getting through security safely and swiftly. Erin, Notting Hill

GOLDEN MOMENT Australia scraped past South Africa in their Rugby Championship clash in Perth in a 24-23 thriller. Rob Horne’s try at the death, converted by Bernard Foley, snatched the win for the Wallabies. But the Springboks had plenty to complain about when Bryan Habana, in his 100th test, was sin-binned in the closing stages. The World Cup count down is on!

The Bathurst 1000 on October 12 is raced over 1,000km (620 miles) over 161 laps in V8 Supercars. But the number that really gets Aussies going every year is the booze limit. ‘Only’ 24 cans of full-strength beer, a 30-can carton of mid-strength, one cask of wine or a 750ml bottle of spirits (must be in a plastic bottle). Everyone’s a winner!
WATTO’S CALF MAY HAVE OPENED DOOR FOR MITCH
CRICKET
Another Shane Watson injury, another opportunity for a young gun to potentially make his mark in the Test arena. All-rounder Watto is no good to the selectors anymore if he can’t bowl, so his being ruled unfit for the upcoming series against Pakistan opens the door most likely for Mitch Marsh (above). The hard-hitting, fast bowling 22-year-old brother of batsman Shaun is better known for his limited overs prowess for efforts such as two sixes off the last two balls of a Champions League Twenty20 match that won a game for Perth Scorchers last month. But he’s much improved in the longer forms after enjoying his best season to date in Sheffield Shield. Watson was out of the recent Zimbabwe tour due to an ankle injury but his calf is the problem this time. The same injury kept Watson out of the first two Tests against South Africa this year, and with South Africa, India and England the next opponents on the horizon, it was an easy call to leave him out. After the experiment of picking Watson as a specialist batsman, new 76

chairman of selectors Rod Marsh (no relation to Mitch or Shaun) has decided he’s an all-rounder or bust. “Had the decision been left to Shane, he would be on the plane to Dubai, however as selectors we have taken a conservative approach to ensure he has the best chance of being fit for the big summer ahead,” Rod said. “He remains an integral part of our plans for the summer.” With subcontinent-style wickets expected in the Middle East, there could be times when just two specialist seamers are picked, meaning a bowling all-rounder would be lent on significantly. Australia’s campaign in Pakistan begins in Dubai on October 5 with a T20, before ODIs on the 7th in Sharjah, 10th in Dubai and 12th in Abu Dhabi. The first Test is back in Dubai on the 22nd with a second in Abu Dhabi on the 30th.
BIG MONTH FOR... Ange Postecoglou’s young Socceroos squad has two important hit-outs this month when they visit UAE and Qatar on October 10 and 14 in the next international window. Their only other scheduled match before they host the AFC Asia Cup and open their campaign against Kuwait on January 9 will be against Japan on November 18. After no embarrassment at the World Cup in Brazil – as many expected of the inexperienced side – Ange has blooded the likes of talented midfielder Massimo Luongo (pictured) to show us the future of Aussie football. It looks bright, but there’s plenty of work to do when the 3-2 win against Saudi Arabia was the first win in 10 months.

HIGHLIGHTS THIS MONTH

Wallabies captain Michael Hooper
WALLABIES KICK OFF AUTUMN AT TWICKENHAM RUGBY UNION
AUSTRALIA V BARBARIANS, NOV 1, LONDON The autumn internationals in the northern hemisphere take on another dimension this year with the looming World Cup to be held in England and Wales. You’d expect the traditional not-sofriendly friendly matches to be kicked off by Stuart Lancaster’s England, but it’ll be Australia’s Wallabies who have the honour of first use of Twickenham when they take on the Barbarians on November 1 at the so-called home of rugby. Vibrant and inconsistent has been the calling card of Ewen McKenzie’s Wallabies throughout the Rugby Championship this campaign. Moments of genius have been punctuated by brain snaps against New Zealand and South Africa. They’ll be in familiar company with the Barbarians, one of the quirkier institutions of rugby union when one name covers any team of randoms plucked to have a run in
a black-and-white top (they can keep their normal socks). Traditionally, the Baa-Baas attack. Because they do, the Wallabies attack. In a nutshell, skills and open, entertaining rugby is basically guaranteed. All Blacks legend Sir John Kirwan is coaching the hotch-potch of top-notch restof-the-world lads who are fit and available. “The Baa-Baas have a proud history and I will be selecting a team that will respect that. We will look to play the sort of rugby against the Wallabies that encompasses that spirit and we want to win,” he said. Fighting talk indeed. Aussie coach McKenzie looks at the game as an ideal curtain-raiser for his side’s tour. “The tour will also feature matches against some powerhouses of world rugby – so this match will be a great way to help us prepare for Wales, France, Ireland and England,” McKenzie said. Tickets £30, ticketmaster.co.uk

Kangaroo hunt
Three of rugby league’s top nations are after the blood of the World Champion Australians in the 2014 Four Nations, starting this month Rugby league is fighting a battle on a bunch of fronts this year. Next year cricket and rugby’s World Cups come around in the oval-ball codes’ heartlands of Australia and New Zealand, and England and Wales respectively. Add to that Aussie football hosting a major international tournament in the AFC Asia Cup. With the World Cup a huge success last year, league needs something to keep fans happy – for that they’ve got the fourth Four Nations tournament. In October and November, across Australia and New Zealand, those powerhouses and perennial World Cup finalists will also face England, the ever-improving force in its own right. The final piece in the puzzle is Samoa, who beat Fiji back in May to qualify for this tournament. So it’s a Champions League of sorts for a sport keen to build the profile of their international games. Here’s how they’re shaping up and the superstars who will be at the forefront of their campaigns. 80
TNTMAGAZINE.COM
AUSTRALIA COACH: Tim Sheens. As with the other teams, the Kangaroos’ squad has been increasing with every NRL team that bows out of the season. The full squad will be finalised after their match against a Prime Ministers XIII in Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, on October 12, but we know for certain they will be the favourites, the ones everyone will want to beat and jam-packed with superstars. The World Cup winners were rampant in that tournament, clinically winning the final 34-2 over New Zealand – in front of a crowd at Old Trafford that was the biggest in rugby league international history – to atone for their loss to the same team in 2008. They then did the same again to their greatest rivals with a 30-18 result in the Anzac Test in May. FANTASTIC FOUR Jarryd Hayne (Eels) – X-factor galore Luke Lewis (Sharks) – Can do everything Jonathan Thurston (Cowboys) – Slippery and slick Billy Slater (Storm) – Explosive and tough as nails

SPORTFOCUS
NEW ZEALAND COACH: Stephen Kearney The Kiwis have fallen further and further behind the Kangaroos in recent meetings, but when the Aussies are beaten, it tends to be at the hands of their trans-Tasman rivals. And when they do, it’s on a big occasion. The last time the world champs fell was in fact in the 2010 Four Nations final at Brisbane’s Lang Park. And the occasion before that was the 2008 World Cup final when the men in black ambushed the favourites. Kearney has named a host of potential debutants in his train-on squad but expect to see the majority of the side that impressed so much at the World Cup just gone. They’ll miss Sonny Bill Williams, the superstar who’s bouncing back to rugby union after the NRL season. FANTASTIC FOUR Roger Tuivasa-Sheck (Roosters) – Try machine Shaun Johnson (Warriors) – Magic feet Kieran Foran (Sea Eagles) – The ringmaster Manu Vatuvei (Warriors) – Battering ram
The Kiwis beat England in Cup semi thriller
ENGLAND COACH: Steve McNamara The now-Roosters assistant McNamara took a 34-man squad to Loughborough for a mid-season training camp in June with the sole purpose of preparing for the Four Nations. Anyone suggesting this tournament means nothing might be brave enough to tell it to those blokes – they mean business. England went seconds from having a shot at the Australians in the World Cup final, only for Shaun Johnson to produce a late try and clutch sideline conversion to snatch victory in the semi-final for the Kiwis. McNamara’s now based in Australia, which can only help him with research into the top Kiwis and Kangaroos, who mostly play in the NRL. They’ll miss Sam Burgess, the Rabbitoh who’s going to Bath in Premiership Rugby, and captain Kevin Sinfield, who’s quit the international game. FANTASTIC FOUR Sam Tomkins (NZ Warriors) – Always a warrior James Graham (Bulldogs) – Bash and barge with skill Josh Charley (Wigan) – Finishes anything James Roby (St Helens) – Under-rated
NRL-based England flyer Sam Tomkins
SAOMA COACH: Matt Parish The Somoans impressed their way into the tournament with a win against Fiji in what was called the Pacific Rugby League Test at Penrith Stadium in May. It was a Four Nations qualifier and a handy warm-up for a side that rarely gets together. That wasn’t a problem for them at the World Cup though, when Parish led the side to the quarter finals. No one wanted to play these guys at the Cup and the Kiwis won’t be looking forward to it after their immense fightback when the pair met. Toa Samoa were 36-4 behind but a 20-point run gave them hope. Tough pool game wins over France and PNG won them a deserved place in the knockout phase where they fell to rivals Fiji. FANTASTIC FOUR David Fa’alogo (Knights) – Braith buster Kyle Stanley (Dragons) – Chance to shine Penani Manumalealii (Sharks) – Play maker Krisnan Inu (Bulldogs) – Makes the points

Christmas cash On average, an Aussie spends £5,000 on mince pies at Christmas. Okay we made that up, but you do spend a lot, so get a job! Ah, Christmas. It happens every year. Same date and everything. And yet it always sneaks up on us. This year, though, we’re planning ahead. We vow never again to say “Sorry, I couldn’t afford to buy any Christmas presents this year. I’ve spent all my money on beer. If it makes you feel any better, I really enjoyed drinking it.” Nope, whether it takes dressing up as the Big Man himself, playing ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ until we want to track Mariah Carey down and strangle her with tinsel, or rustling up enough turkey and cranberry sandwiches to feed all of Santa’s elves, we will be earning extra Christmas cash this year.
Christmas bar and kitchen staff As London gears up for its busiest drinking month of the year – with extra ambulances at the ready when office parties go wrong – so too, do the most festive bars and restaurants. VIP catering companies such as At Your Service (ays.co.uk) and Espirit (espiritgroup.com) provide bar and waiting staff for some of the most exclusive parties in the city. Hours are 84

flexible, meaning that work needn’t interfere with your own plans, plus the perks abound – think massive trays of sausage rolls and smoked salmon canapes that are all yours if they don’t get eaten. If you’re an experienced chef looking for a little extra work to keep you ticking over during the festive months, try Claire’s Chefs (claireschefs.com), a new agency looking to get skilled chefs on its books to hire out for events and parties, particularly over the busy Christmas period.
Santa and his Little Helpers With beards and bellies provided (if you need them, that is), how could you not consider moonlighting as Lapland’s finest resident for the Christmas season? Magenta Star provides Santa’s grottos for shopping centres across London and the UK, and the recruiters ensure that the going rate for Father Christmas is “competitive” (magentastar.co.uk). If short, rather than wide, is your thing, then look no further than the world’s largest (and arguably greatest) toy store. Hamley’s flagship shop on Regent Street will soon be recruiting
Christmas elves to join its team over the busy season. Applicants must have a cheery demeanor, look good in green, and know how to steer a reindeer. To find out more, email the Hamley’s Toy Shop team at jointhemagic@ hamleys.co.uk.
Christmas tree vendors Tree hauling is a man’s job. And nowhere is that more apparent than at Pines and Needles Christmas tree suppliers, where vendors must be comfortable enough with their brawn to wear a traditional Scottish kilt – a skirt worn by both sexes. The reason? All trees sold at Pines and Needles are freshly cut from the Scottish Highlands. Worried your bare, knobbly legs will buckle in the cold? Fear not. A strong dose of heavy lifting and Christmas cheer will be sure to warm the cockles at this most festive of jobs. Email siterecruitment@pinesandneedles.com. If you’ve got a more feminine flair, the team are also looking for Christmas tree decorators. You must have a clean driver’s licence as you need to drive to the clients’ homes across London to

Office party DJs DJing from decks placed atop the managing director’s desk in a stuffy office block may not be what you envisioned for your first gig, but we’ve all got to start somewhere – and with
Christmas tunes spinning on the decks, what’s not to like? Companies such as DJ London (dj-london.co.uk) and Function Central (functioncentral.co.uk) are on the lookout for talented DJs who can help them keep up with demand as the Christmas party season approaches. Gumtree is also a thriving hotbed of jobs for musical aficionados who need to earn some extra cash this year; search DJing jobs, and you’ll be faced with everything from Christmas cheese requests to positions for those who are willing to break out some grimier beats during the season of goodwill.
How did you get into events? I organised events at university and really enjoyed it. I then took an internship at Barclays Capital in their marketing team and things evolved from there. What do you do day to day? Working in the luxury events industry there is no same day as each event and client is unique; I jump between ‘creative brainstorming sessions’ to ‘menu tastings’ from ‘venue site visits’ to ‘celebrity speakers’. It’s exciting because there is always something new to immerse yourself in. What’s the most rewarding part? That feeling when the event is wrapping up and your client is happy. You can’t beat that! And the most challenging? Managing an event on site can come with challenges. However much you have prepared in advance, situations can sometimes arise that are out of your control, such as bad weather or flight delays. Reacting efficiently in such high-pressure situations is challenging, but we always find solutions and make it work! polarblackevents.com

Online phone calls are the saviour of longdistance relationships and the friend of nagging mums the world over. There are hundreds of options out there, but not all of them boast crystal-clear connections. Here are some sites worth signing up to if you haven’t already. Skype: This well-known internet phone service offers free international calls between users. Given that both parties must have an account and be signed on to speak, it never has jibed well with grans. To solve this, though, you can also call mobiles and landlines for a small fee. You can top-up credit online or now you can buy vouchers at PayPoint counters in most local shops. skype.com/en Viber: This online phone service is similar to Skype, although it doesn’t yet have a system for dialling numbers with credit. What it can offer, however, is portability – originally designed as a mobile app, it works very smoothly on-the-go, and requires less memory than Skype to make a call which means it won’t eat up your mobile Internet allowance (if you have an iPhone, Face Time is basically the same thing). viber.com Localphone: A call from your online Localphone account to Australia costs 0.9p per minute, compared to 1.4p a minute as charged by Skype. However, the site is not as streamlined and slick and the connection is not as good. localphone.com
Mobile phone Talk of SIM cards may sound outdated, but there’s something to be said for dialling your mate directly to cry ‘I love you sooooo much’ when you’re out on the piss and can’t be dealing with temperamental 3G. We do, however, recommend against this option if you have a penchant for drunk-dialling your ex. Not cool; especially when you’re 10,000 miles away and they’re at work. Pay-as-you-go: Great for when you first land and you haven’t got a fancy phone yet, you can simply pop these special SIMs in your mobile and call home for a decent rate. Telecom cards offer good deals on calls to New Zealand and can be purchased online. NobelCom cards, which can be bought in the UK, offers the same rates as Skype but you can only pick one destination. Monthly plan: If you call home often and you have a monthly contract with a UK phone company it may be worth including international calls in your rate. Although it’s slightly pricier than pay-as-you-go, it eliminates the need for top-ups and having to change SIM card and number every time you dial your mum. Ask your contract provider for more information as some have deals on specific destinations.
Apps Swanky apps are where it’s at these days and they do far more than merely call. As well as downloading the standards (Skype and Viber or FaceTime apps to use on the move) you can also send postcards, videos – and even a card with your own handwritten message inside! That will get you brownie points for staying in touch and for being thoughtful. Brucy bonus. Postagram: Send a postcard directly from your phone with this nifty little app – just upload a photo and a message and have it transformed into a postcard that can be

DO FOOCALL – TNT TRIES OUT A CHEAP CALL APP FooCall is a free app for iOS and Android that lets you make really cheap phone calls to anywhere in the world from your mobile. FooCall is different to other calling apps as it lets you connect over either a WiFi and 3G/4G connection or using your free minutes included in your monthly mobile contract. I had a good old natter to my mum back home in Oz for an hour and it only cost me 4.5 per minute to her mobile (Oz landlines are just 1.5p), so £2.70 total, which you can’t even get a pint for these days. The call quality was great – no cut-outs or weird robot voices. And, although it’s sometimes nice to do a video call, a phone call meant we could talk while I was preparing
dinner and I didn’t have to sit in one place peering at a screen for an hour. The FooCall app is easy to use too – you simply download it for free, enter your mobile number and a verification code it quickly texts you and you’re ready to go. FooCall also give you 10p free credit to try the app out – a short call to Oz or you could call the US, Canada, China or India for 10 minutes, so why not catch up with one of your mates who’s on their travels? foocall.com
Ah, the power of great hair. Rachel from Friends had it, Kim Sears has it and we all want it. We want it so bad that we spend a whopping £6 billion on hairdressers each year. So, it’s a bit strange that for something that matters this much, we still make decisions about it in a very haphazard way. You know the deal. You need a change, you don’t know what, exactly, and somehow the life and colour of your precious locks rely solely upon an airbrushed Google image of Cheryl Cole. And that’s before the completely clueless search for the right stylist at the right salon has begun. Thankfully, those days are a thing of the past and it’s all down to this great new app – HAIRCVT. Not only does it let you browse thousands of real (yes real) hairstyles on everyday people, but you can filter by styles that will work for your own unique hair and search for looks that may take your fancy. Once you click a style, you can explore the portfolio of the salon – including top names such as John Frieda, Gina Conway and Easton Regal and up-and-coming salons – and the stylist behind it, along with a few personal details, to make sure you’re picking the right match. Then, everything you need to call and book is at your fingertips – the hairstyle lottery is no more! haircvt.com TNTMAGAZINE.COM
