LETTER OF THE WEEK
YOUR SAY A REALLY GOOD READ
I’m leaving for Australia, after nearly seven and half years in London. I’ve moved from West London to East London and back, worked for six different companies, and lived with some amazing flatmates, had to deal with them going home, and then met more great people. So many changes, but there’s been one constant – TNT. I’ve been reading it since I arrived from Harare, and it’s as

much part of my life in London as anything else. I found a flat through TNT, and a job in the careers section, went to gigs in the entertainment section, cracked up at ‘Desperately Seeking’, loved the free stuff to do, and devoured the travel articles. I just wanted to express my appreciation for a truly fab mag! Keep up the good work TNT, we love it! Trish, Acton ‘Action’ Town

Members of Sir Keith Park’s family and World War II Royal Air Force veterans unveil a statue of the serviceman in Trafalgar Square. Park, a New Zealander, was the RAF commander responsible for the defence of London during the Battle of Britain – the name given to the air campaign waged by Hitler’s Luftwaffe against the UK in 1940 – and is largely credited with winning the decisive victory. The statue will stay on the square’s fourth plinth until May, and a permanent statue will be unveiled at Waterloo Place on the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

LONDON
LORD MAYOR’S SHOW FREE WHAT: It’s a massive day of parades, beginning at 11am and finishing with a spectacular fireworks display at 5pm, launched from barges between Blackfriars and Waterloo bridges. WHEN: Saturday, November 14. DO IT BECAUSE: This event has been taking over London’s streets for nearly 800 years, and now features about 6000 people, military marching bands, Chinese acrobats, a procession of decorated floats and some sweet fireworks at the end.

Capital idea: Soho Square Soho Square, the small grassy patch in the middle of some of London’s priciest real estate, dates back to 1670. In its early days the square was one of London’s most fashionable addresses, although it used to be called King Square and a statue of Charles II still stands in the middle of it. Home to the London headquarters of a stack of media giants, including 20th Century Fox, Soho Square also serves as a way station between the humdrum of Oxford Street and
the elegant dishevelment of Soho. It’s a leafy green oasis in the heart of the London swarm, and its location means it’s an interesting place to while away a lazy afternoon, as it attracts a mixture of tourists, creative types and Soho bohos. On occasion it hosts curious displays of performance art, which can appear suddenly and without explanation. TS

BRITAIN EXPLAINED SCOUSERS A scouser is someone from Liverpool, as Liverpudlian is too much of a mouthful. Scousers get a hard time from their southern countrymen, who tend to stereotype them as shell-suited chavs and petty crims. For example, what do you call a Scouse woman in a white shellsuit? A bride. The word scouser
derives from the Norwegian lapskaus – a stew slow-cooked to make cheap meat taste more palatable, and a popular dish in working-class Liverpool. The Scouse accent, as demonstrated by Liverpool footballer Steven Gerrard (left), is unique within Lancashire, and owes much to Liverpool’s status as a port city, with more than a hint of Irish. TS

LOST YOUR MARBLES? The Elgin Marbles in the British Museum are classical Greek sculptures, originally part of the Parthenon in Athens but acquired (ahem) by the Brits in 1812. Ever since then, the Greeks have been trying to get them back to Athens. Lesley Fitton, the museum’s Keeper of the Greek and Roman Department, insists the Marbles serve a broader audience in the UK: ”You have to question whether every antiquity should go back to where it was found, because that would fragment the great collections wherever they exist: in London, New York, Paris.”

Feeling a bit flat before this course – perhaps because it’s a Thursday evening of a long week or the anticipation that I won’t really learn anything new, as has been the case with many of the cooking schools I’ve attended – It’s with surprise I find myself three hours later inspired to plan my next dinner party. Gibson was forced to leave Grigorieva and Lucia in Los Angeles and fly to New York to resume shooting Beaver, his new comedy that is being directed by Jodie Foster. On the set of the movie, which is being filmed in White Plains, the crew sang For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow and Gibson reportedly blushed.

And I went into Shhh! in East London and looked through their mass of coffee table photography books and not only was there not the particular types of guy that I’d be able to find attractive, but there weren’t any guys … I found there was nothing aimed at women, so I started to research why that was and found there are these ideas that women aren’t as visual as men, but the latest research seems to say that’s a complete myth. A lot of the guys in your mag look like girly boys. Why is that?
The University of Aberdeen’s face research lab has done the best research about what types of faces are attractive, and it does tend with women that if you get a man’s face and Photoshop it to slightly feminise it, women will almost always rate the slightly feminised one as more attractive. And with body shapes, the slim but muscular physique is much more popular than the uber muscled guy – the sort of Chippendales physique. You’re the first women’s magazine in the UK to run pictures of guys with an erection. You must be very proud!
Absolutely. I mean we didn’t do it to shock people. We did it because after our first issue people were like: ‘This is great – I
love the photography, but I just want to see more.’ And also with the idea of erections versus a flaccid penis, you know we’re actually producing erotic photography … that’s our stated aim so the idea of looking at a guy – if he’s not hard, he’s not aroused, so it’s not erotic. So there was a real call to go in that direction. I didn’t expect to get to this point so soon, but one of the photographers we’ve been working with, who has a beautiful boyfriend, sent me a picture … I wasn’t expecting him starkers in bed in the morning with a hard-on! But it was such a beautiful, intimate set of photos I was like: ‘We just have to publish it’.
If he’s not hard, “ he’s not aroused, so it’s not erotic ”
much. It’s only really in the past few years that women have started creating the products that are consumed by women. Like, for example, vibrators … the popularity of vibrators among women has gone through the roof. If anything, Filament seems a bit tame. Is there going to be more full monty?
I am never ever going to publish a photo shoot that isn’t high erotic or high artistic quality, just because it’s got hard cock in it … all those magazines like Playgirl bought their images straight from the gay market, which is why they weren’t successful. So there is a demand for more explicit imagery, but it’s going to be a slow process. Playgirl used to be filled cover-to-cover with hard cocks which had no erotic quality at all. I really don’t want to publish an explicit image just for the sake of it.
» Filament is published quarterly. See filamentmagazine.com
But your printer had other ideas …
They said actually we won’t publish erections or penetrations or ejaculations, which is an interesting list of things cos that obviously lets you do anything with the female body, but not with the male body, so we ended up having a campaign to raise enough money to change printers. After Sex And The City are you surprised these double standards still exist?
Sadly the world hasn’t changed that
YOU DON’T SAY? Have you ever been mistaken for someone famous? No, but I do occasionally have people spot me in clubs who go: “You’re the woman who does that erotica magazine!” What song is guaranteed to get you on the dance floor? I’m quite into my cheesy ’80s stuff, so probably Tainted Love by Soft Cell. Vegemite or Marmite? Marmite. NZ Marmite every time – Sanitarium.

Eric Bana loves his car. So much so that he used his celebrity status to get a doco made singing the praises of his ‘Beast’ – a 1974 Ford GT Falcon Coupe. Indulgent? Sure, but such is Bana’s enthusiasm and charm that you happily go along for the ride as the star restores his muscle car before wrapping it around a tree in 2007 during the Targa Tasmania rally. Along the way, Bana, who also directs, visits some famous motor enthusiasts including Jeremy Clarkson and Jay Leno. Featuring scene-uponscene of blokes looking under bonnets and soupedup cars tearing up the Aussie countryside, Love The Beast could easily have been nothing more than porn for petrolheads. Bana’s got more depth than

Michael Caine is back on form as a former Royal Marine hunting hoodies in his old neighbourhood in a revenge flick that’ll make you squirm in your seat. The Time Of Our Lives
The Pursuit
Colour Me Free!
(Polydor)
(Decca)
(EMI)
Still not yet 17, Miley Cyrus has risen to superstardom by serving as a surrogate big sister to every pre-teen in America. The commercial canniness that’s marked her career continues on The Time Of Our Lives, which pays clever homage to a plethora of styles: mock-rock (Kicking And Screaming, Talk Is Cheap), Nashville balladry (Obsessed, The Climb), R’n’Bslanted pop (Party In The USA) and so on. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when her audience grows up. WFJ
As the cover of The Pursuit makes clear, Jamie Cullum is keen not to get stuck in the lucrative but stifling jazzcrooner ghetto. The trouble is he’s not quite sure how to get out of it. The Pursuit blends straightforward readings of show tunes, such as If I Ruled The World and Just One Of Those Things, with stilted soul (We Run Things), sub-Keane pop (Mixtape) and other even less successful stylistic flirtations. It’s a laudable mess certainly, but a mess nonetheless. WFJ
The quality that first marked out 16-year-old debutante Joss Stone as someone worth watching was her rare and unusual habit of playing it straight, of singing rather than oversinging. Three albums later, she’s lost her restraint. The clumsy Colour Me Free! is defined not by the half-cooked soul backing band but by Stone’s nearconstant, desperate-toimpress warbling. Oh, and by that extraordinary cover, ugly enough to drive listeners to download. WFJ

LIVE REVIEW Ladysmith Black Mambazo Cadogan Hall Oct 23 ★★★★★ South African a capella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo enjoyed their big break in the late ’80s when they appeared on Paul Simon’s Graceland, and the same innovative arrangements and soaring vocals are on full display. The group’s pieces start slowly, with almost whispered chants, before rippling to loud, powerful choruses, which are captivating in their energy and soulfulness. That said, the staid allseater Cadogan Hall is probably not the ideal venue for such a joyous act. TOM STURROCK

at electro that blighted Rudebox. Produced expertly by Trevor Horn, Reality Killed The Video Star is a big pop album, which recalls all manner of other stuff – Oasis (Superblind), Pet Shop Boys (Difficult For Weirdos), ’60s soul (You Know Me) – but, somehow, only ever really sounds like Robbie Williams. Part of it is down to Williams’ strong vocals. And part of it is down to his wretched lyrics, attempts at profundity that often come closer to utter nonsense; the worst offender is gibberish ballad Blasphemy. Still, the spotlight’s his again, which is all he ever wanted. WILL FULFORD-JONES

Canterbury the best again A commanding forward pack and a late penalty by Stephen Brett sealed a 28-20 victory for Canterbury over Wellington in the Air NZ Cup.
Party time for Canterbury
Canterbury, the defending champions, had built up a strong 18-3 lead by half-time which slow-starting Wellington had reduced to 25-20 with two minutes remaining before Brett put the result beyond doubt. Canterbury made an explosive start, ending two minutes of unbroken play from the kick-off with fullback Colin Slade scampering 60m for a try. Leicester even overcame the handicap of missing England internationals Tom Croft, Lewis Moody, Jordan Crane, Dan Hipkiss and Louis Deacon as well as having eight players on the injury list. Jongi Nokwe’s eighthminute try put the Springboks in front but the Tigers hit back with a try from Argentina international winger Lucas Amorosino while 17 points from the boot of scrumhalf Ben Youngs proved crucial. A couple of late penalties from Ruan Pienaar brought the Springboks, who had also defeated the British and Irish Lions 2-1 and took the Tri-Nations this year, to within a score but Leicester held firm. The English champions opened up a surprise 16-8 lead in the first half on the back of sure kicking from 20-year-old

Former Wallabies star Lote Tuqiri said he had cast aside the hurt of losing his Australian Rugby Union (ARU) contract after signing for English club Leicester. Tuqiri made his debut for the club on Friday night when he came on in the 55th minute against the Springboks. The ARU cancelled Tuqiri’s contract in July after a 67-Test career which yielded 31 tries. “It did hurt initially, but you move on,” Tuqiri told The Times. “I was high profile back in Australia and I could have been smarter about one or two things. But that’s in the past. “Now I just want to get back to playing.” Tuqiri, who switched from league to union in 2002, was linked with a move to Wests Tigers in a bid to relaunch his NRL career next season.
sin-binned with 15 minutes remaining, Wellington capitalised on Canterbury being a man down by scoring 10 quick points through a penalty to Piri Weepu and a converted try by Scott Fuglistaller. Slade’s return to the field, with Canterbury clinging to a five-point lead, turned the game again as they swept downfield in the closing minutes for Brett to land the decisive penalty. The Canterbury forwards were a telling factor in the game as they controlled the turnover ball. A steal by lock Sam Whitelock put Slade away for his first try, and his second, just before half-time, came from a backline move after a series of forward rushes.

Australia kept their grand slam hopes alive with a desperately-tense 18-9 victory over gallant England at Twickenham. In a gripping encounter, Australia trailed until the hour mark before fullback Adam Ashley-Cooper clinched the first leg of the slam for the hugely relieved Wallabies with a powerhouse try eight minutes from time. Ashley-Cooper, who scored Australia’s sole
try in last year’s Twickenham triumph over their old foes, was mobbed by teammates after carrying four defenders over the line and planting the ball in the left-hand corner. Matt Giteau nailed the sideline conversion. But the Test could have ended in disaster for the Wallabies when a depleted England looked poised to spring a massive boilover after taking a 9-5 lead into half-time. But the Wallabies weight of possesion and field position finally won out.

Wales were left fuming with a head-high tackle by Dan Carter that went unpunished in their 19-12 loss to New Zealand. The All Blacks playmaker tracked back magnificently after Shane Williams had stepped his markers to produce a crunching, try-saving tackle on Martin Roberts, who had the line at his mercy in the 71st minute with the score at 19-9. Luckily for Carter, neither South African referee Craig Joubert nor his assistants noticed the outside-half’s swinging arm which seemed to make full contact with Roberts’ head and shoulders, an act that would normally see a player penalised at best, sin-binned at worse. Asked whether Carter, who was booed by the crowd whenever he touched the ball after

England’s nerves as their disciplined defensive work was rewarded. New Zealand handed a debut to 19-year-old Kieran Foran in place of injured Steve Matai. England effectively had four props in action with captain Jamie Peacock operating in the second row behind Adrian Morley and James Graham. On a slick surface, England began slowly but took the lead after 10 minutes thanks to good work from Burgess, who went through two tackles before putting St Helen’s Eastmond in under the posts.

Sheens calls on side to step up Australia coach Tim Sheens called on his side to find another gear in this weekend’s final against England. “To be fair to the players they improved but I still don’t think we really found our true level and that is something we’ll have to rectify next week,” Sheens said. “We scored some tries but I don’t think we really got going. No disrespect to France but just because we did enough to beat them it doesn’t mean we did enough to satisfy me.”

Penrith Panthers centre Michael Jennings insisted he could handle the pressure of the Four Nations final after grabbing a debut hat-trick in the demolition of France. The 21-year-old bagged the first two tries of the game to set the Kangaroos on course for a comfortable win in Paris. Jennings, Panthers Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year in 2007, completed his hat-trick as Australia hammered home their advantage in the second half. The French held out for 22 minutes before Jennings crossed twice in five minutes to set the Kangaroos on course for a comfortable win. Luke Lewis went over to score shortly after

Home-ground advantage could not be underestimated in New Zealand’s sudden-death football tie with Bahrain, former All Whites coach John Adshead said.
Having taken the All Whites to the World Cup finals in 1982, Adshead understands the pressure coach Ricki Herbert faces as he prepares for the must-win qualifier on November 14. The 1982 team created a slice of sports history during their long World Cup qualifying campaign. It ended in a sudden-death qualifying match in Singapore in January 1982, where they cut China out of the World Cup finals in Spain. Now, as new players try to lay the walk the same historic

Ascot talent scout Nick Smith watched Shocking’s Cup triumph and also suggested trainer Mark Kavanagh look at entering him in the prestigious King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July. “Shocking is such a progressive type that we are recommending to Mark Kavanagh that he should look at the Hardwicke and then consider the King George,” Smith told Britain’s The Daily Telegraph. “This horse is not your [Ascot Gold] Cups type and should be effective over a mile and a half in Britain.” Shocking’s win in front of a

TACKLES YOUR CAREER DRAMAS
How can I diversify my skills? Diversifying your skill set is important, particularly in the current climate. Catherine Goosem, of Hays GlobaLink, says one way of doing this is to request an internal secondment to a different part of the business or to an international office. This will also enable you to
develop your skills within a new environment. It’s also a good idea to speak to your line manager or HR department about options you have for more training or qualifications, and whether the business is able to sponsor you. Other possibilities include taking unpaid work experience or volunteering.

The number of vacancies for skilled workers in Australia has risen for the third month running. The largest monthly rise was recorded in building and engineering professionals, where the number of job vacancies rose 6.6 per cent.

TNT Weekender Dublin IRELAND
Tourists and locals jostle on Dublin’s cobbled streets, seeking a pint of Guinness in a traditional pub, soaking up its culture, from live Celtic music to a literary tour, or shopping on Grafton Street. Ireland’s capital has a distinctly cosmopolitan vibe that ensures visitors are guaranteed a good time.
Brendon Bishop - TNT Images
HEADLINE ATTRACTION Dubliners know a thing or two about partying, and one of the highlights of visiting the city is the nightlife. Head to Temple Bar for a raucous night on the tiles or, for something a little quieter, The Stag’s Head off Dame Street is a quaint boozer. If you’ve been inspired by Riverdance and want to see the Irish fiddle in action you’ll find most pubs have live music nights. Try Sean O’Casey’s in Marlborough Street or, for the real thing, head to the Irish Cultural Institute in
Monkstown, easily accessible by the DART train service.
Take a tour of the home of the black stuff at the Guinness Storehouse. Don’t miss out on sipping a pint and taking in the city views in the brewery’s Gravity Bar.
university. Admire the illuminated pages of one of the world’s oldest manuscripts, the Book Of Kells. Retrace the steps of famous writers James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and Oscar Wilde on a literary tour of the city, or walk the hallowed halls of Trinity College.
CHOW DOWN
RETAIL THERAPY
You don’t have to settle for stodgy potato-laden pub grub in Dublin. Take your pick from a wide range of restaurants, many of the best are located on the south side of the city. For a spot of afternoon tea, bag a seat at Queen of Tarts on Lord Edward Street. The Baileys cheesecake is delicious.
Grafton Street is home to Irish designers selling chic clothes and jewellery. Discover Dublin’s more ethnic neighbourhoods near O’Connell Street or browse the markets on the cobbled streets near Temple Bar.
BEST OF THE REST
PARK LIFE If the bustle of Ireland’s capital becomes too much, take time out in St Stephen’s Green and Merrion’s Square. Stroll along the River Liffey and take in the views from Dublin’s bridges.
OUT OF TOWN Take a trip along the coast using the DART service. Go south to the pretty seaside village of Dalkey or north to Howth, a popular destination for day trippers from Dublin.
NEED TO KNOW WHEN TO GO Any time or go for the St Patrick’s Day party on March 17. GETTING THERE Many budget airlines fly into Dublin Airport. From the airport take a taxi (about €20, around 20 mins) or a bus. The Dublin Bus is €3 but takes a while. Other shuttle services, including Aircoach (between €6-€8 one-way), are quicker. CURRENCY Euro. 1 GBP = 1.11 EUR. GETTING AROUND The Dublin Bus service runs throughout the city. You need the exact fare for boarding. DART train services run to the coast and the outer suburbs. GOING OUT A pint is €5. ACCOMMODATION Hostel dorm beds from €10 a night, private rooms from €22. See tntcrashpads.com.

and fir trees of Alpine villages such as Zermatt, and the towering hotels and concrete malls of purpose-built resorts like Flaine. Engelberg in Switzerland is neither. Its centre is surrounded by belle époque buildings, pastel-coloured and dotted with balconies. Today it looks a bit like Nice in a snow dome. An attractive, snow-sure resort with easy transport links from Zurich, could Engelberg, whose name means Angel Mountain, be the Alps’ best-kept secret? I’m starting to think so until I get off the shuttle bus to the first ski lift to find a stagnant sea of skiers and boarders

o much snow has fallen in the Swiss ski resort of Engelberg that in a country used to snow and unused to transport disruption, our train can’t go any further. “This is very unusual for Switzerland,” our guide says. “You know there’s a lot of snow when the train stops.” A replacement bus takes us on the final leg of the journey and, with snow chains firmly in place, we arrive in Engelberg to see the town looking its prettiest. NEED TO KNOW
Spend the night in an igloo
waiting for the doors to open. The latest dump has delayed the lift opening, but even so it’s still a long slog to the top. The huge vertical distance from the town to the highest lift station means you need to catch four lengthy lifts to the top.
ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP When we get off the third cable car at Stand, the shark fin summit of Mount Titlis pierces the sky, and the snow – source of so much trouble – lies in thick powder. All is forgiven. You can take the final lift, a rotating cable car with a glass bottom for panoramic views, up to Klein Titlis to access glacier skiing or take in the scenery from the highest tourist destination in central Switzerland, but we’ve been waiting long enough. It’s time to hit the slopes. The ski area is separated into beginner and intermediate areas, with several well-known off-piste runs for the more advanced. By the top of the third lift we’ve already signed up for the tougher pistes, and I launch myself down the steep, churned piste, praying my legs will remember what to do. In these conditions, though, it’s no concern when they don’t – a soft landing is pretty much guaranteed. It also doesn’t matter it’s not the biggest ski area I’ve come across, with countless waist-deep powder runs metres from the piste. LONG WAY DOWN One of the highlights of Engelberg skiing, though, is that you don’t have to repeat the lift
sequence on the way down. There’s a 12km run from Titlis to the valley – one of the longest in the Alps – and it conveniently starts off tricky and steep but, as your legs tire, gets gradually more gentle and winding until you reach Sammelplatz for the bus home. After a run like this you need sustenance – and Engelberg isn’t short of restaurants serving up hearty Swiss food, such as Älplermagronen (Alpine farmer’s macaroni) and rosti. At the wooden-clad Alpenclub we tuck into a huge vat of fondue, soaking up the melted cheese with bread and potato, leaving just enough room for the legendary house chocolate mousse. Engelberg might be good, but it’s surely this recipe that’s the best kept secret in the Alps.

WHEN TO GO The ski season runs from December to April but skiing is possible all year round on the Titlis glacier. GETTING THERE Fly direct to Zurich and catch a train via Lucerne (one hour). Swiss (swiss.com) operates daily flights from London from £69 return. For train information see myswitzerland.com/rail. GETTING AROUND You can easily walk around the town of Engelberg and there are shuttle buses to the ski lifts. VISAS No visas needed for Aussies and Kiwis. Saffas require a Schengen visa. CURRENCY Swiss Franc (CHF). 1 GBP = 1.63 CHF. LANGUAGE German. GOING OUT A beer is about 4-5 CHF. ACCOMMODATION Dorm beds from 31.10 CHF at the Engelberg Youth Hostel. See hihostels.com.
TRAVEL
For après-ski with a difference, head to the Igloo Village at Trubsee (near the top of the first lift). You can get a warming gluhwein and fondue at the bar, or splash out on a night in your own igloo. The village is rebuilt every year and each room is decorated with wall carvings. There’s even a sauna and hot tub. See iglu-dorf.com.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR PHOTOS STAND OUT
THEME: SEPIA TONING Bicycles, Amsterdam, by Nicole Patterson For hints and tips on your holiday snaps, email hotshots@tntmagazine.com
TRAVEL
Toning pictures used to be a way of ensuring your prints were preserved to archival quality. The look is so nostalgic that many photographers deliberately emulate the effect and it certainly worked for Nicole, whose modern composition is given an extra edge by sepia toning.
65
WHY THIS WORKS: 1 Wacky composition for staid subject is tempered by sepia toning. 2 Toning gives a warm feel to what was probably cold light. 3 Monochrome concentrates the eye on lines in the shot. 4 Lots of diagonals introduced by tilted camera angle give a feeling of movement. 5 Sepia toning gives an oldeworlde feeling to the oldeworlde city of Amsterdam.
HOT TIPS: 1 The traditional way: Shoot black and white film, pre-soak in bleach, wash the print, then soak in toner to convert silver halides to silver sulphides. 2 The green way: Replace the silver using a dye toner bath. 3 The easy way: Fix a sepia tone filter to your camera. 4 The digital way: Use photo software programmes. 5 The creative digital way: Desaturate the image until you get the black and white effect you like, then play with the colour levels.

Spring in Paris is famed because the warm sunshine and blooms bring couples out on to streets. But what indeed do you do if it’s winter and you’re ‘too in love’? Well, you go anyway, and have a glass of champagne at St Pancras then hop on the Eurostar. Then you skip down to Les Jardins du Marais (homeplazza.com), the perfect hotel for breakfast in bed (ahem) after an evening strolling the backstreets of the Marais. Take a walk up to Parc de Belleville for superb views, preferably late in the day so you can head to Rue Paul Bert for dinner at a great bistro. I’d also suggest visiting smaller museums, like the Musée de l’Orangerie in the Tuileries Gardens and the Musée du Moyen Age in the Latin Quarter. But most of all just walk, talk and smooch. Paris is at its best when you don’t really do anything at all. There will be Christmas markets, but regular readers know how I feel about them so you’ll have to find them yourself. The window displays in the Grands Magasins on Boulevard Hausmann are just as festive and a Parisien institution.

With yellow fever vaccine in your veins and anti-malaria tablets there are few barriers to making it from Cairo to the Cape, but you should also check you are up-to-date for things like rabies, hepatitis and typhoid. In terms of staying safe there are few specific obstacles – there’s a danger of pickpockets, but expect friendliness and hospitality from most people you meet. You’ll avoid mass tourism in many places along the way. Sudan in particular is a raw experience, and one which needs preparation in the form of a sometimes-trickyto-arrange visa. But otherwise you need only detour slightly if you feel that you’re surrounded by travellers. The Kenyan and Tanzanian wildlife parks and Zanzibar are places where you’ll note plenty of the visitors – but be imaginative in your route planning and you’ll have just as special places largely to yourself. Once you’ve covered flights you’ll need about £300 a week.
People always say you should go to the romantic city of Paris in spring, but what if you’re too in love and can’t wait that long? Is there a Christmas market and somewhere to ice skate? What would you recommend to young lovers for a visit in early December? Charles & Anne, via email

The book, now on sale, is the fifth in the annual series and claims to capture the world’s hottest travel trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the year ahead, bringing together the expertise of Lonely Planet authors, staff and travellers. A QUESTION OF TIME One of the major price determinants for a ski trip to the Alps, and the difference between affordable and eye watering, is the time you head out there. As with flights and accommodation elsewhere in the world, Christmas, New Year and Easter price hikes apply, and these times should be avoided. In addition, due to skiing and snowboarding being family and school excursion-friendly pursuits, avoiding the halfterm holidays is also critical in saving both your money and your sanity. The UK 2010 half-term dates (February 13-20) should be given a wide berth, unless you have a bizarre penchant for paying double and being in close proximity to acne. The school holidays in

responsibility to a large operator. By organising your own trip you can add to the sense of adventure, the thrill of the chase, and the sense of satisfaction – and, let’s face it, planning a holiday is often more fun than the work you are supposed to be doing. If the DIY ethos is more your thing, we advise starting off with Interhome (interhome.co.uk), a rental agency for private landlords, which has Boarding in Andorra
Top Of The Mountain Concert, Ischgl (May 1; ischgl.com) has in past years featured Bob Dylan, Elton John, Scissor Sisters and Sugababes to name a few.
4 Rude Chalets’ Chalet Christophe, Morzine
an incredible amount of self-catering chalets available at resorts all over Europe (also see the breakout above). Self-driving is also an option from the UK, with resorts Morzine and Avoriaz within closest reach. From London you are looking at about a four-hour journey to Calais, and then a 10-hour drive to the resorts from there. Operators such as Erna Low (ernalow.co.uk) also provide self-catering packages that can include the cost of a ferry crossing, making life a little easier and cheaper. If driving yourself doesn’t appeal, Eurostar (eurostar.com) has direct services from London to the French resorts of Moûtiers, Aime-laPlagne and Bourg-St-Maurice, from £149 return. There’s a choice between a day or night journey, which takes under eight hours. So you can leave on the Friday night and wake up to a full day’s skiing with your environmental conscience and your body well rested.
Snowbombing, Mayrhofen (April 5-10; snowbombing.com) has live rock and electronica gigs, and fancy dress is encouraged (below).

CAUTION: PROTECT YOUR MONEY! If you claim a tax refund, be sure to use a company bonded by the Association of Tax Agents (ATA). If a company is not bonded by the ATA and goes out of business, you could lose your refund. Also, we recommend you avoid agents who charge unusually low commission rates – three such agents have gone out of business in the last 4 years and clients, like yourself, have lost their money.

Alan or Alen or ?, from Auckland, who lives in London: You said you’re
a surfer, and we met in Turnmills a long time ago. Then I saw you at the Cross club, and you saw me too. We saw each other again in Pacha, and our eyes met. If you‘re single, leave me a message, it would be nice to meet you. See tntmagazine.com/seeking.

The crazy Kiwis in Dollis Hill: Loved those wild times.
Late nights, heavy drinking, and heavy petting. I only wish I could remember it. If only we didn’t drink so much sambuca! BOOM! Can’t wait to pick up where we left off in NYC. Love, Spider Chocolate. Daniel (the Pom) from Ealing:
I had loads of fun hanging out with you at the Reddie on Saturday, October 24. I’d love to hang out with you again at some stage, so if you see this, you can email me at reddiebites@live.co.uk. Lisa. Sarah: Big fat congratulations to you and Rich, can’t wait to see the rock! Cx. TNT Halloween Party pictures from The Grand Union Kennington, Saturday, October 31: I was at the party
and had a great night – hope I didn’t take any heads off with my chainsaw! It was such a good night though, I didn’t

take any pictures. Can anyone who has pictures please post them on Flickr or email a link to alan_clarke59@hotmail.com. I was the one with the white suit and a chainsaw. Ed: Check out our pics from the party on page 16, or see tntmagazine.com/spotted. Fluffy and Buggsy: Thanks
for all the good times. Park life at The Warren won’t be the same without you two cheeky chappies. Love, the alternate hedgehogs. Dr Fox: I was the ugly mother at the Science Museum on Friday, October 30, suited up as Dr Jackal. You were dressed as The Bride Of Chucky in a see-through wedding dress with perky ears. Remember, you touched my tail at some stage? Maybe it was the puppet show, but I completely forgot to take your name or number, but I could feel you
were in for some Halloween fun. Email me at theevilone 01@gmail.com and we can contemplate some horrendous activities that only consenting adults would ever consider. Come on, make my night. Let the cocktails live on:
Goodbye to all the Londoners who have come in and out of my life over the last two years. I still can’t believe I’m leaving this amazing place. Remember Thursday Adventure bar cocktails must live on. I also expect a phone call when You’re The Voice comes on. All the best to you all, and see you soon in Brisvegas. Love, Cocktail Queen Kate xxxx. George from Manchester who now lives in Clapham:
I met you at The Grand in Clapham a few Saturdays ago. We exchanged flirty looks and you asked me to dance at the

My friend got dumped twice this year, and her self-esteem is at rock-bottom. She keeps freaking out that she’ll never find anyone. We’re strictly friends but I’ve been thinking of taking her out and maybe giving her a sympathy shag just to cheer her up a bit. Is that iffy?

It’s not completely insane: sex usually leaves people happy. But your friend seems
more concerned about finding someone to love. Remember, too, that the leap from being ‘just friends’ to ‘friends with benefits’ is
bloody massive, and should be negotiated with caution. Before you proceed, keep one thing in mind: men and women think differently. It

end of the evening. We were too shy to exchange numbers. I’d like to meet up again. I was the girl in the black skirt, with whom you danced to the last song of the night. See tntmagazine.com/seeking. Brad: I’ll miss you when you’re gone. Our once-a-week trysts were the only thing I looked forward to. Will miss your biting wit and icy blue eyes. But most of all I’ll just miss your buff, hot bod. Stay Frosty. Whiskey Tango Gal. The man in the stripy hat who I met at the Clapham Common fireworks: You lit
my sparkler and I licked your toffee apple. Let’s get together again and create some more explosions. Email me at youmakemycatherinewheel@ bang.com. Hot girl on the first-class train in Nice … London wants you back: You introduced
yourself to me and I didn’t even know it, but you got my attention pretty quick with those beautiful blue eyes and wavy blonde hair. I’ve been lucky to see all sides of you Emily, and share so many magic moments! :-) Your confidence, especially on wheels, was so hot, he he. You were my summer love and who knows, Sydney doesn’t sound too bad? London town misses you and I do too … just a little :-). From your Kiwi.
seems obvious, but for some reason slips the mind so easily at crunch time – say if you’re drunk and she’s needy. Shagging her then reverting to being mates might seem plausible to you, but chances are it’ll probably be worse for her self-esteem than just taking her out for a drink.
