I read the letter ‘More than skin deep’ from one of your correspondents in Tooting, and was amazed it was letter of the week. Are you having a laugh? This correspondent completely misses the point. If a New Zealander goes to a rugby (or league) game and paints their face black it’s not to try and be Maori, it is to support their team by painting their face the team’s colour. That’s it. There are no sinister undertones to it. By writing in and making ridiculous accusations about those supporting their team by painting their faces in the team’s colours – as is done by supporters all over the globe – this correspondent cheapens the real race relation issues. People have fought and died for civil rights, so let’s get real and address the authentic issues instead of attacking people supporting their team. Cameron, Fulham

In response to the letter ‘More than skin deep’, you should be ashamed Kiwi from Tooting. How long has it been since you lived in NZ or supported NZ sport? Black is our colour for national sport – just because avid Kiwi supporters wear All Blacks jerseys and paint their faces and other body parts black doesn’t mean they are trying to be Maori, let alone “tak[ing] the piss out of skin colour”. Have you thought it may be that we are proud to be Kiwi and want to spur on our fellow countrymen who represent us in sport? Perhaps you should take your blinkers off as it seems like you are still looking at life in the ’70s and ’80s. Bex, Acton

This is leaving me with “ bitter and sad resentment towards the English ” WORKING AT IT I love London, even with the expensive living, crammed Tube and cold, dark days. Arriving from New Zealand six months ago on a typical OE, I have embraced London life. But my one disappointment is the job situation. Just how hard is it to get any decent work here? I know it‘s a bad time for the economy, but it’s beyond a joke, and I know I am not the only one with this problem. I have a management and marketing degree and over two years’ experience, but have had doors slammed in my face and over 400 rejected applications. I love London, but this is leaving me with bitter and sad resentment towards the English and how they ignore a potentially great employee when they see one. I have branched out in other areas, such as ditch digger

London

How to make the most out of Christmas in London

and shit shoveller, but am I destined to go completely broke and leave London with a broken dream of an OE and a hatred of the English? I call on my travelling brothers and sisters from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa to get the networking channels going in our favour. Get people you may know in touch with that someone you heard of. You’ll be surprised how small connections can make a big difference. And if there is anyone out there who can help my situation, please get in touch. I will even happily give my first week’s wages to anyone who can get me a decent position. adammcleod, via tntmagazine.com

LETTER OF THE WEEK

YOUR SAY WITH DUE RESPECT

Thank goodness New Zealander Sir Keith Park is finally getting the recognition he deserves (‘Kiwi war hero honoured’, TNT 1366 Nov 2-8). It’s a crying shame that a man whose efforts saved Britain from being invaded by the Nazis during the dark days of World War II is not a household name – I asked my Kiwi and Aussie mates but none of them had heard of

him. Surely there’s something wrong in our schools if we’re not learning about him? I reckon we should all go to Trafalgar Square and pay our respects at the statue of Park. If it hadn’t been for him who knows what could have happened to this country. There may not have been a London for us to visit on an OE – or everyone would be speaking German. James, Acton

Capital idea: The Roof Gardens Seeing pink flamingos splash contentedly in the stream running through the manicured garden, it’s easy for visitors to forget they’re on a rooftop in central London, seven storeys above the hubbub of the Kensington High Street. But then again, there’s not much about the Roof Gardens that’s typical. As well as being home to a super-funky night club and a sumptuous restaurant, it boasts 1.5 acres of green space, including a Spanish

garden, an English woodland (home to the flamingos), and a Tudor-themed garden. All are truly magnificent, providing a unique London backdrop for an original and lavish night out that’ll make every one of your mates back home green with envy.

WHAT HAPPENED IN 1066? 1066 featured the Battle of Hastings and ensuing Norman conquest of England. It was also the end of the Dark Ages and the start of the Middle Ages. Edward the Confessor, King of England at the time, died on January 4, and Harold Godwindson was anointed his successor. But William, Duke of Normandy (in the north of France), was Edward’s cousin, and

soon made a counter-claim on the throne. William invaded with an army of 20,000, and Harold hurried his forces south to Hastings. During the battle, Harold was killed and the Norman army prevailed. By the time William’s army reached London, the northern earls had submitted. He was crowned King of England on Christmas Day. TS

the many lives of Soho

Between Oxford Street and Piccadilly Circus sits one of London’s most colourful, controversial and storied neighbourhoods WORDS TOM STURROCK

”W

hen the respectable Londoner wants to feel devilish, he goes to Soho, where every street is a song,” wrote author Thomas Burke. And in its various incarnations, Soho has kept an eclectic beat – over the years it has been many different things to an ever-changing cast of characters.

HOW IT BEGAN In the 1500s the Lord Mayor of London would go out to inspect the city’s water supply while hunting – soho, like tally-ho, was a hunting call, indicating the quarry had been sighted. After the Great Fire of London in 1666 gutted

the city, many of the displaced thousands moved west, and Soho was born, attracting hard-working artisans and craft trades. “It’s not surprising the more colourful visitors such as Casanova and Mozart, took up in Soho,” London historian Richard Tames says. “That’s where they’d gravitate.” See: The first civic buildings, Golden Square and Soho Square, on Rathbone Street.

CENTRE OF STYLE In the swinging ’60s, London’s influence on fashion and popular culture was huge, and Carnaby Street (main image) was the place

LITERARY LANDMARKS Cafés and dining rooms in Soho were popular among writers, such as Karl Marx, Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens and William Blake. The area features in fiction – Sherlock Holmes is a Soho regular and Mr Hyde’s apartment is amid the maelstrom of excess and debauchery. “Soho had the feel,” Tames says, “of an area of transformation that was also slightly forbidden.” See: The French House pub on Dean Street,

LISTEN TO THE MUSIC In the 1950s, Soho was at the heart of London’s music scene, with the first all-night jazz sessions on Meard Street. Rock music took over Soho in the ’60s, with the Rolling Stones jamming at venues in the area and Jimi Hendrix playing his last live gig at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club. “You had the Musicians Union headquarters on Archer Street. Session musicians would hang around all day,” Tames says. “If anyone wanted a trombonist or a pianist at short notice, they could go down and take their pick.” See: Ronnie Scott’s has moved from Gerrard Street to Frith Street, but is open every night.

It was a global hub of male fashion. “A big part of it was that it got pedestrianised very early, and that really altered the nature of the shopping experience,” Tames says. OUT AND ABOUT In the days when homosexuality was frowned upon, the permissive air of Soho ensured it had a reputation as the heartland of gay culture in London. It remained discreet though – so-called Molly Houses sprang up around the area, where gay men could go and meet other men. “The Golden Lion on Romilly Street was the place for men to go if they wanted to pick up a sailor or a guardsman,” says Tames. See: Old Compton Street is the pink precinct. DENS OF INIQUITY At one point there were about 200 sex shops and strip clubs in Soho. The sex trade in the 1960s was a licence to print money, and the vice squad often turned a blind eye. “In Soho, the ’60s were already happening in the ’50s – that’s where artistic, bohemian and homosexual elements were drawn,” Tames says. “If you knew the right places, you could drink 24 hours a day.” See: Oscar Wilde took rent boys to restaurants in Rupert Sreet, while Brewer Street is now the centre of the diminished sex trade.

» Covent Garden And Soho: The Illustrated A-Z Historical Guide by Richard Tames is out now

ALMOST AT AN END Soho faced extinction in the 1970s, when Westminster City Council earmarked it for redevelopment. The threat galvanised Soho’s residents, who took councillors on a backstreets tour of the area. “The councillors saw people making everything from violins and ballet shoes to shotguns,” Tames says. “This concentration of craft skills would [have been] dispersed if the area was re-developed. Instead, they curbed the sex trade and created a more diverse economy,” forming Soho as we know it today.

Sausages

It’s that time of year for warming winter grub, and it’s easy to see why Brits reach for a comforting plate of bangers and mash.

Market Row, Electric Ln, SW9 8LD A real gem, partly due to the woodfire oven shipped all the way from Naples, partly due to the pizzas themselves – crisp bases covered with generous toppings – and partly to the price, most about £6.

OFF WITH A BANGER It’s thought pork sausages clinched the name ‘bangers’ during World War II when, due to rationing, they had a high water content, and often exploded when being cooked as the water turned to steam. HIT A SNAG While most supermarkets sell sausages in a range of flavours – M&S pork and apple are delicious – there are also English county sausages to try: Cumberland sausages, originating from Cumbria, are peppery and longer in length. Lincolnshire are flavoured with herbs, namely sage, and are chunky in texture.

PARIS IS NOT AMUSED American heiress Paris Hilton is threatening legal action against a Wellington company that used her picture on a billboard with the word ‘vacant’ written across it.

A company called Media5 used a photo, which showed Hilton partying, to advertise vacant billboard space in Auckland. But according to Hilton’s Los Angeles-based manager Jamie Freed, Media5 had not gained permission to use the image and could

expect to hear from the heiress’s lawyers. Media5’s Adam McGregor said the company was having a “bit of fun” with the ad. “We were thinking about using [former foreign affairs minister] Winston Peters, but Paris is much prettier and she has a proven ability to laugh at herself,” McGregor said. “We assume that the [advertising] agency has taken care of the rights to the image of Paris, but we will ask [them].”

LOOK WHO’S TALKING

Ahead of the end-of-year tennis finals in London, former Aussie star Pat Cash holds court on the men’s game and sparring partner John McEnroe

ENTERTAINMENT

Pat Cash INTERVIEW TOM STURROCK The ATP Tour Finals are coming up in London. How do you see it going?

It’s an opportunity for guys who didn’t break through at any of the Grand Slams to get in there, and hopefully play their best tennis straight away. So they’ll be fired up, and that’s why it’s tougher than a Grand Slam in some ways, because you get the best players right from the first round. The format is really geared towards seeing the best-of-the-best. A year ago people thought Roger Federer was spent, only for him to bounce back. Then he lost in New York.

You’re still playing on the Masters tour and taking on some of your old opponents. How’s that going?

Yeah – I’m still playing. I’m still involved and playing those seniors events. But some things haven’t changed. McEnroe hasn’t mellowed at all. He’s still as intense as he

The next year “ or two is shaping as fascinating ”

These young guys, like Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro, are getting more experience, and it means Federer has been made to pay for some of the shots he likes to play. Players are catching up to him and he’s having to work a lot harder.

always was. It makes you worry he’ll have a heart attack on court. He takes it the most seriously out of all those older guys.

It makes for an unpredictable finish to the year, doesn’t it?

Are any players on tour actually mates with each other or is it too cut-throat?

Certainly, with Rafael Nadal fit, the tournament is going to be interesting, and the next year or two is really shaping as fascinating. Federer is still young enough to be a force, but he’s got some real competition among the guys behind him.

Yeah – there are guys who are mates. There are guys on the Davis Cup team who generally get along pretty well, though it’s possibly not as close as it used to be. But even other guys, like Mats Wilander, I’m good mates with, as well as the Aussies I played Davis Cup with.

How about the local hope, Andy Murray? How’s he travelling?

It’s not easy – he’s improving and he’s a quality player. He had a bad match at the US Open, when he lost to Marin Cilic in the fourth round in straight sets, but he’s a real threat. I expect him to be a Grand Slam finalist at least a few times over the next two years. What about Lleyton Hewitt? Is he cooked or can he get back up there?

competitor, but I don’t think he’s going to be able to deliver all year the way those top guys need to.

I don’t think Hewitt can be a consistent top-ranked player. He’ll be a threat to the top players, but to be right up there in that top five you need to be consistent, playing all year. Beating Hewitt over five sets will still be tough, because he’s such a great

YOU DON’T SAY? Do you have a nickname? Butcher. There’s a story behind it, but I probably shouldn’t tell it. Which actor would play you in the film of your life? Danny DeVito – I’ve always fancied myself as a penguin. What’s your porn star name? My porn star name [confused]? It’s Hugh Jorgen. When I was on the tour, that used to be my alias. I booked into hospitals for surgery as Hugh Jorgen.

And there are some who don’t get along – you’ve said in the past that Ivan Lendl annoyed you.

He’s all right – I put up with him all week at the US Open in New York. In professional sport, it takes all types.

Matt Damon, Scott Bakula

STARRING:

RT 108 MINS

★★★★★

No one could ever accuse Matt Damon of being a vain actor. Sporting a hideous rug and moustache and lugging around 30 extra pounds, the star just about destroys his sexy image as oddball corporate whistleblower Marc Whitacre in The Informant! Based on true events, Steven Soderbergh’s satire reveals how Whitacre agreed to help the FBI expose pricefixing at ADM, the agribusiness giant where he worked. Problem is he’s a pathological liar, to the point where the agent in charge of the investigation, Brian Shepard (Bakula), doesn’t know what to believe. As the authorities turn their attention from ADM to Whitacre, the whistleblower’s tales get increasing taller. With Soderbergh adopting a slow, meandering pace,

Damon has his work cut out to stop The Informant! from turning into an almighty snore. Showing a deft comic touch, the actor is up to the task and delivers a performance both funny and poignant. It is the sort of multi-layered

turn that whets the appetite for Damon’s portrayal of Springbok captain Francois Pienaar in upcoming Clint Eastwood movie Invictus. GOOD FOR: Those who like to see a method actor at work. PIERRE DE VILLIERS

THE REEL DEAL Oscar-winners Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Kidman are lined up to play a husband and wife in an upcoming film about the world’s first transsexual. Paltrow, 37, and Kidman 42, will play artists Greta and Einar Wegener in The Danish Girl, entertainment industry newspaper Daily Variety has reported. Einar Wegener, who will be played by Kidman, was a male artist who underwent groundbreaking surgery to become a woman in 1931 after pretending to be a female model in a series of successful portraits painted by Greta Wegener.

The Coen brothers make a thoroughly riveting return with this comedy-drama about a college professor (Michael Stuhlbarg) whose life is falling apart as his wife demands a divorce and his deadbeat brother won’t move out of his house. British actor Tom Hardy (below) is expected to step into Mel Gibson’s lead role in the new Mad Max film. Hardy, 31, is a rising star who recently won acclaim for a UK television production of Wuthering Heights. He will star opposite Oscar winner Charlize Theron in the new movie, Mad Max: Fury Road, the Sunday Express reported. A film insider said filming would start in Australia next year. The new project comes a ripe 25 years after the third movie in the series, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which costarred singer Tina Turner.

TAIO CRUZ

If you’ve seen the sorry bunch of tryhards on this year’s X Factor, you already know that, Stacey’s daffy charm and the ‘Jedward’ weirdness aside, there ain’t much to write home about. Which makes last year’s winner Alexandra Burke seem all the more stellar. The soul diva-lite is in town this week plugging new single Bad Boys.

Taio Cruz began his career as the songwriter responsible for Rihanna’s Umbrella. But we’ll forgive him for that, as he’s now a leading light in the post Dizzee Rascal wave of Brit “urban” acts crashing the mainstream. Thomson said if Australia was to avoid an “environmental disaster”, net overseas migration needed to be slashed from 213,500 to 70,000 a year. ■ Minister warns civilians will continue to die in shoot-outs between police and criminals. ■ He says police will be given greater licence to use lethal force. ■ President Jacob Zuma backs proposals to give police more firepower.

t was unavoidable innocent civilians would get shot in the crossfire between police and criminals, deputy police minister Fikile Mbalula said, as he defended plans to give officers greater licence to use lethal force. “Where you are caught in combat with criminals, innocent people are going to die, not deliberately, but in the exchange of fire,” Mbalula said. The grim assessment came as controversy continued to rage over the Government’s proposed amendments to section 49 of the Criminal Procedure Act. Section 49 states that if someone suspected to have

Mbalula and national commissioner Beki Cele have suggested that the act puts too heavy a discretionary burden on the police. “The act says they’ve got to make a deliberation as to what is dangerous,” said Mbalula. “That is why police are

killed and are dying like flies.” Controversy about the planned amendments mounted after the police shot dead a toddler in Midrand, apparently mistaking the metal pipe he was holding for a firearm. However, President Jacob Zuma backed the proposed changes to the act, to “limit the number of police killed by criminals”.

signage is not always clear. “If you go to Nelson Mandela Bay you are not going to find a sign at the airport. No plane goes there. “Yet you get off and there is a big sign saying ‘welcome to Nelson Mandela Bay’.” Cities such as Port Elizabeth may have to consider joining the name with Nelson Mandela Bay, Jordaan added. “The same applies to Mangaung. You drive to Bloemfontein but you get welcomed to Mangaung.”

A ton of dagga with an estimated street value of R36million was destroyed in Port Elizabeth. Superintendent Priscilla Naidu said the dagga was confiscated in a container on a farm in March this year.

Just before half-time Fallon put his team in front as he met a corner cross from 6m out and buried his header into the back of the net.

Socceroos claim gutsy victory The 10-man Socceroos scored a stunning 2-1 Group B qualifier victory over Oman to put them in pole position to make the Asian Cup finals in 2011. Australia were forced to play one man short for 75 minutes after losing defender Rhys Williams to a red card, as well as fight back from a goal down. But a first-half goal to Luke Wilkshire and a late winner to Brett Emerton, with eight minutes left, secured the Socceroos an unlikely victory to put them top of the group with two matches remaining. The top two teams in the group qualify for the tournament finals in Qatar. The Socceroos’ hopes looked grim when Williams was marched for a clumsy challenge on Oman striker Emad Al Hosni just 15 minutes into the match. Bafana Bafana head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira’s new era with the South African national side got off to a good start when a new-look Bafana held the highly rated Japan to a hard fought 0-0 draw at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Parreira, who replaced fellow countryman Joel Santana last month, had an immediate effect. While there were a lot of bad mistakes made by Bafana it was by far their gutsiest performance since reaching the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup in June. The draw ended a series of poor defeats under Santana and Bafana go into Tuesday’s friendly against Jamaica in Bloemfontein with morale restored and confidence high. There were limited opportunities for either side during the tight tussle.

New Zealand’s 1-0 over Bahrain in the second leg of their qualifier gave them a 1-0 aggregate result, sparking scenes of jubilation among the home players and most of the capacity 35,000 crowd. It will be just the second time the All Whites have appeared at a finals and the first since Spain in 1982, when present coach Ricki Herbert was in the squad. Billy Slater atoned for his moment of madness in last year’s World Cup final with a piece of brilliance to secure Australia the Four Nations trophy with a 46-16 win over a gallant England. Slater scored a second-half hat-trick but it was the fullback’s effort to set up Melbourne teammate Cameron Smith which defined his match-winning performance. Slater, whose errant pass infield cost Australia the World Cup last year, juggled and

then acrobatically tapped the ball back infield for Smith to pounce on the crumbs and give Australia a 28-16 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game. As anticipated the match got off to a rugged start with Adrian Morley doing his best to knock Ben Hannant back to Sydney with the first tackle. The hosts had the better of the opening exchanges but it was Australia who looked like they had scored when Brett Morris went over in the corner, only for the video referee to rule he had lost the ball.

THE SAFFA-SARRIES

CONNECTION Saracens are the early leaders in the Guinness Premiership, but their South African flavour has the Pommy press up in arms WORDS TOM STURROCK

C

hanges have swept through English rugby club Saracens. Most noticeably, they’re winning – currently sitting atop the Guinness Premiership, undefeated, seven matches into the season. But another shift also occurred this year, both on and off the field, with Saracens being shaped by a deepening South African influence. A consortium led by South African billionaire Johann Rupert is now the club’s majority shareholder, and Saracens signed seven South African players in the off-season. Their new director of rugby, Brendan Venter, is a former Springbok, while chief executive Edward Griffiths is also South African. “There’s no sense of it being a South African takeover, but we are keen to make our club a welcoming place for South Africans,” Griffiths says in response to claims the changes risk alienating supporters of the 133-year-old club. “Some people look at Saracens and maybe feel a little bit uneasy. But our aim is to grow the club, and produce players who can play for England.”

SARACENS’ WINNING WAYS Certainly the new leadership has delivered on-field, with Saracens rising to the top of the table, having finished ninth in the Guinness Premiership last season. “We’ve recruited well and we’ve got the right talent, but we’ve also brought in good characters,” Griffiths, a former CEO of South African Rugby, points out. “Players from the southern hemisphere sometimes see English club rugby as a pay-day at the end of their careers – that’s not what we want.” Saracens supporters’ nerves have been tested this season, with four of their team’s games decided by a nail-biting four points or less. “Last year we lost by a lot of small

margins,” Griffiths says. “This year we’ve come out on top in those tight games.”

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME Winning, however, has not been enough to placate some quarters of the British press, who have greeted the increased Saffa presence at Saracens with suspicious chuntering. “Within rugby circles there has been some scepticism,” Griffiths says diplomatically. “But a lot of clubs have South African players. The reality of world rugby at the moment is that South African players are in demand.” That said, Saracens are openly courting South African support. They play their home games in Watford, about 15 miles north-west of the capital, and hope to become the default option for London-based expats. “We have at Former Lions captain Ernst Joubert

the club people who have an understanding of South African rugby, and what those fans want from the club they support and from that match day experience,” Griffiths says.

AN APPOINTMENT AT WEMBLEY Misgivings about Saracens’ burgeoning South African connection are unlikely to be soothed by this week’s fixture against the touring world champions. It will be the first time the Springboks have played a London club. “The Boks aren’t playing at Twickenham this year, so hopefully we can fill that gap for London-based South Africans,” Griffiths says. Traditionally, end-of-year tours have served as a shop window for southern hemisphere players in the market for a lucrative stint with an English club. But while Griffiths might love to lure a Fourie Du Preez or a Bryan Habana to the club, he insists it’s unlikely. “We had a high turnover of players last year, so we’ll be looking for more stability, but I won’t rule anything out,” he says. “But Saracens has seen before that bringing a big-name player in from abroad doesn’t guarantee success. It’s all in the character of the player, not his reputation.”

With confidence returning to the accounting and finance sector, there’s good news for those on the job hunt

D

emand for accountants and finance professionals took a hit this year, but those in the industry say things are starting to look up.

THE MARKET With renewed optimism in the workplace, companies are thinking of hiring more finance staff. Clive Davis, director of recruitment company Robert Half, says recent surveys of chief financial officers in the UK found that the majority are becoming increasingly confident about the prospects for both the British economy and their own companies. JOBS IN DEMAND As the UK moves out of recession, accountants are likely to be the biggest hiring priority, followed by specialists in financial analysis, reporting and audit and compliance. Interim or temporary positions remain in demand, Davis says, as these appointments allow companies to address varying and unexpected needs in a flexible framework.

tntmagazine.com

THE FUTURE Davis says Robert Half recently researched developments in the job market and found twothirds of accountants were likely to move jobs when the recession ended. “This indicates that while many accounting professionals have been happy to stay in their jobs during the recession, the upturn will see a significant turnaround in the job market. This will in turn lead to opportunities to those out of work and those looking to enter the profession as positions become available,” Davis says. THE CITY It used to be the place for finance professionals to get a foothold in London, but the City took a wallop in the economic downturn. According to Davis, things are beginning to change: “We are seeing an increase in demand for experienced accounting professionals with experience of working within treasury in a financial or product control capacity. “With increasing regulatory burdens looming, accountants with regulatory expertise are also in demand among City firms.”

Dancing in a sweaty, dark room with hundreds of strangers and the smell of spilt beer reminds me of my uni days. And I’m loving every second of it. A follow-up search on the band’s MySpace page reveals every one of their forthcoming UK gigs is sold out. It seems they’ve been blessed with King Tut’s magic kiss. Another legendary venue is The Arches (above). The massive subterranean space is host to tons of gigs, while clubbers rejoice at its Death Disco night, an event locals rave about. HOLIDAY SNAPS

HOW TO MAKE YOUR PHOTOS STAND OUT

THEME: FLOWERS Kew Gardens, London, by Sutapa McCrael For hints and tips on your holiday snaps, email hotshots@tntmagazine.com

TRAVEL

Flowers are irresistible subjects and close-ups are guaranteed to make your photography look a cut above. Sutapa chose a colourful bloom and had the added interest of a wasp for her study of a flower.

67

WHY THIS WORKS: 1 Good specimen. Perfect blooms free of disease and bent petals can be quite difficult to select. 2 Bright colour bloom against a dark, contrasting, unfussy background. 3 Flat lighting – no hard shadows to spoil composition. 4 Good focusing. Depth of

field goes to nothing when you are this close, so accurate focusing is important. 5 Wasp on rule of thirds and in a good position on the bloom.

HOT TIPS: 1 Use your macro setting: this will allow you to get nice and close to the subject. 2 Check your minimum focus:

somewhere in that complicated manual will be some technical info, including how close you can focus without blurring. 3 Focus by moving back and forward: with close-ups it is sometimes easier to switch the autofocus off, set the minimum focal point and just move the camera back and forward to focus.

4 A gentle summer breeze can be a hurricane to a delicate wispy flower. A large piece of card used as a windbreak will help reduce the shakes. 5 With a static subject you have some degree of freedom. Use a spray to create dewy water drops or shoot from different angles.

Say you have nine days in Portugal, and will need three to see Lisbon and one to detour north to Sintra, a wonderful fairy-tale village with an awesome castle. So that only leaves a few days. Most people would pass straight through the Alentejo, the chunk of coast and forest that separates the centre of the country from the south, but I would recommend Évora, a lovely medieval town two and three quarter hours from Lisbon. Another treat of an old town is Estremoz. On the coast, Vila Nova de Milfontes is a lovely seaside stop with good connections from Lisbon and to the south. You could also high-tail it to Monchique in the Algarve for hiking, biking and horse-riding with a bonus trip to the Caldas de Monchique spa. To get there, catch a bus to Portimao and change, reaching the highlands in about four hours. Consider a stop at Setubal where there are dolphin-spotting cruises. On the Leeward coast consider Lagos – a fun place, thanks to its surfer community, with a great eating and drinking scene. Lastly, make time for Faro, which does a better job of being Portuguese than other resorts in the Algarve.

You can see Pompeii on a day trip from Rome, but it would be a tiring day. It’s two hours by train from Rome to Naples, and from there you can get a train to Pompeii-Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station in about 40 minutes. If you left Rome at 6am you might be at Pompeii by 10am or so, and then after the four hours necessary to get the most from the place you’d have enough time for a pizza in Naples before catching a train (fsonline.com) back to the Eternal City. The whole thing would cost about £50, including entry to the ruins. There are also direct buses from Rome to Pompeii but I couldn’t find out the times of operation. As for day tours, factor in the above then imagine sharing the agony with dozens of tetchy fellow tourists. It sounds exhausting. If you’d like to see a deserted Roman city, admittedly without the funky charred people, aim for Ostia Antica, the former port of ancient Rome. This once-great seaside town is now two miles from the sea thanks to silting up and a fall in sea level, but it is a very well preserved place and has some superb frescoes. It’s an hour’s train trip and will cost about £2 return.

MARKET KNOWLEDGE Earlier this year there was a heart-breaking story about a wallaby at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm in Somerset who, at six months old, tumbled from his mother’s pouch. He was found abandoned in the wallaby enclosure and when keepers tried to put him back, his mum was having none of it. You may be wondering how this relates to hats, but it was a woolly hat – fashioned by staff into a surrogate pouch, that saved Wallis’s life. At least

ANIMAL ATTRACTION

NEED TO KNOW WHEN TO GO Between April and June is a good time if you want to see the migration. Keep in mind that predicting where the animals will be is not easy. GETTING THERE Going on an overland trip is a great way of seeing different parts of Africa. If you want to go it alone fly into Dar Es Salaam and make your way to Arusha, where many safari operators are based. VISAS Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans need a visa for Tanzania. All foreigners also need to show proof of a yellow fever inoculation. CURRENCY Tanzanian shillings. 1 GBP = 2100 TZS. Travellers cheques and credit cards are not widely accepted. Use cash, in particular US dollars are extremely handy to have. LANGUAGE Swahili and English. GOING OUT A beer costs about 2500 TZS. ACCOMMODATION Lodges in and around the Serengeti can charge hundreds of US dollars per night. Most overland tours will use camping sites.

middle of the night, don’t wander far. Just do it outside the front of the tent.” With the health and safety speech over, I make my way to the campsite to go about my nightly ritual before heading to bed. Then I see them. Two green eyes in the bush. I think if I stare back and go about my business then everything will be all right. And it is. But on the next night even the toothpaste advice is taken seriously.

GAME FOR IT The next morning, the reality of where we are dawns as we leave our campsite for a game drive. Not 200m from where I slept is a giraffe nibbling on breakfast as the sun beams threads of light through the early morning clouds. For the next four hours it’s a who’s who of the animal kingdom. As it’s the time of the annual animal migration which passes through the Serengeti, the plains are teeming with wildlife. We see hyenas weaving through the grass, antelope nervously twitching at every unexpected sound, lions eyeing wildebeest from rocky outcrops and hippos not doing too much in swampy creeks. But it’s the migration that’s astounding. Perched on a hill in our Land Cruiser, we look out as far as possible to see countless

wildebeest and zebra dotting the plains like ants. After grazing on our own lunch we’re still in search of the one animal that will complete the list of the big five – leopard. It doesn’t take long, and soon we’re surrounded by 15 other vehicles as we stare up at a leopard serenely perched on a branch. It’s only later we appreciate how lucky we are to spot the animal, with our guide telling us some people who work in the reserve can go up to six months without seeing one. Having ticked it off the list, the rest of the afternoon becomes more about taking it all

SOME BIG FIVE FACTS WHY ARE THEY CALLED THE BIG FIVE? The big five – lion, leopard, Cape/African buffalo, rhinoceros and elephant – are so named because they are considered the most dangerous to hunt on foot. Of course, poaching is now a serious offence in nearly all African countries, and it is illegal for guides to carry guns in the Serengeti.

IN THE MONEY In the 1990s, the South African government redesigned the country’s bank notes, putting each of the big five animals on the different rand notes.

lions will have sex 3000 times for every cub they produce that survives to one year old.

FORGET HUNGRY HIPPOS Male elephants can weigh up to 6800kg and eat up to five per cent of their body weight each day – that’s 340kg for the big boys.

GOT IT TOUGH The rhinoceros population has decreased by 90 per cent since 1970. There are only five species left in the world – all are endangered.

FREE ROAMERS Leopards are solitary animals. They can have territories of up to 450 sq km.

ONE TO LOOK OUT FOR DOWN TO BUSINESS In the wild, lions live for about 10-14 years. It is believed adult

Despite their docile appearance buffalo are one of the most dangerous animals in Africa, killing dozens of people every year.

BIG TRIP in, and we try and milk every moment left on the drive. That night I go to bed knowing the animals are out there around us, possibly still watching. But I couldn’t be happier about it.

ON THE MOVE Every year almost 2.5 million animals migrate in a circuit in search of pasture and water. In April the animals can be found in the Serengeti and by June they’re on the move north towards Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve. By November the migration moves back towards the eastern part of the Serengeti, heading to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area by March, when they often give birth. Timing your visit to be in a place to see the migration can be difficult – obviously the animals have little respect for a calendar, but safari and overland operators can give you the best advice to maximise your chances. VISITING NGORONGORO CRATER NATURE’S THEATRE Descending into Ngorongoro Crater can be a somewhat underwhelming experience. As we start the 30-minute drive in a troop carrier we’re shrouded in a blanket of mist, which dampens the mood among our group. We’ve been told that spotting wildlife in their natural environment can be difficult at the best of times, and now we’ve arrived in a pea-soup fog which makes seeing difficult. But as we approach the bottom, we leave the problem behind us. Clouds sit perfectly on the crater’s rim, while the sky above us is crystal clear. It’s a stunning amphitheatre for Mother Nature to showcase some of Africa’s best-loved animals.

Getty Images, TNT Images

LIFE’S GREAT IN THE CRATER Aside from being a stunning setting, Ngorongoro Crater is a popular destination because visitors are almost certain of seeing a huge amount of wildlife in a relatively small area (260 sq km), unlike the vast Serengeti, which covers about 30,000 sq km. The crater was formed when a volcano

exploded and collapsed more than 2 million years ago. Its rim and dense vegetation act as a natural barrier, discouraging many animals from coming and going. While this has led to some genetic issues, many animals still thrive in the environment.

SO MANY ANIMALS As we drive into the crater the density of wildlife becomes quickly apparent. After spotting buffalo we come across a pride of lions enjoying the morning sun. Not far off zebra wander down the road, and within a couple of hours we spot a rare black rhino. Before lunch a sea of pink welcomes our arrival to Lake Magadi, where thousands of flamingos provide a beautiful foreground to the lush green that covers the crater’s rim. In less than five hours it feels like we’ve seen many of the 25,000 large mammals that live here. Underwhelming is now the last word I’d use to describe it.
