EDITOR’S LETTER For most of us from the southern hemisphere, Christmas is about a big feast with the family, long sunny days and hanging out at the beach or by the pool. But if you’re stuck in London over the festive season – fear not. Our feature on page 12 tells you how to eat, drink and be merry (and maybe help those less fortunate), even though you are far from home.

I’d like to say to Jess, who was travelling from Dublin on Ryanair after the Wallabies match, it wasn’t Ryanair’s fault, nor was it Dublin’s nor Ireland’s, that you didn’t read the instructions on your boarding pass, which said you needed to get your passport checked and boarding pass stamped. That you had to get it stamped on your way over was a pretty good indication you needed to get it stamped on the way back. The type of language coming out of your mouth was disgusting. Could you keep that for when you are next at Westfield Parramatta? Todd Marlow, SW1

➥ TNT 1368, NOV 16-22 ON WITH THE JOB I started reading Adam McCleod’s letter ‘Working at it’ with sympathy until I got halfway in. Your broken dream is understandable, but hatred of the English? What does this kind of childish, bigotry solve but to blame someone for a crisis affecting thousands of Brits, not just Antipodeans. I respect you soldiering on with other jobs to get by, but with the UK’s lax attitude to hiring those on working visas, the opportunity to further your career here has always been a privilege, not a right. There’s never been a better time for companies to be picky in their employee selection. More importantly and less selfishly, in times of economic struggle don’t you understand that Britain has to look after its own first? If you’d done some research before you left, you’d know the international banking crisis has been severely affecting

NEXT WEEK IN

In times of economic “ struggle, Britain has to look after its own first ” the UK since late last year. Yes, it’s disappointing, but if you can’t comprehend that there are Brits struggling just as much as you, I suggest you pack your bitter resentment and head home. Jayne Ellis, Greenwich

Big deal, so you’ve paid a couple of dollars for a visa and you think that gives you the right to have employment? The reason why you don’t have a job is most likely down to your poor attitude: you think everything should be given to you on a plate, and when it’s not, you can’t wait to blame everyone else for it. When I came back from my travels last year I applied for lots of jobs and whereas before I got hired within a week, this time it took several months. I didn’t however, blame foreigners or start developing a hatred for them, like you

➥ TNT 1365, OCT 26-NOV 1 BRITS TO BLAME The main culprits for the trains, Tube, buses and other public services not working is the British public itself. They take pride in having a stiff upper lip and a grinand-bear-it attitude while not realising this outlook makes it easier for the service providers to walk all over them and take them for mugs. They don’t complain so they get treated like shit, with contempt thrown in for extra measure. NYApple007, via tntmagazine.com

LETTER OF THE WEEK

YOUR SAY IT’S GAME OVER

I’ve given soccer my best shot. I’ve learnt the offside rule. I’ve learnt not to strike hard objects when skimpy guys in unnecessarily large shorts go over like extras in a Sylvester Stallone movie the moment their ankles are tapped. I’ve even learnt not to laugh when they wear gloves in the arvo. I’m now over it. That debacle in the France v Ireland World Cup qualifier was the final

straw. It’s a game of no morals. The French bloke’s handball to set up the winning goal was cheating, yet no one cared. All the blame went on the referee. It’s not the cheating that has put me off the game, it’s the fallout and general opinion that the player did nothing wrong. I’m leaving those overpaid wimps alone from now on. John, Forest Hill

Giant tree stumps from Ghana are about the last thing you’d expect to see in Trafalgar Square, but artist Angela Palmer’s Ghost Forest installation intends to raise questions about the future of the world’s vulnerable forests. And don’t worry, the stumps, which come from nine different tree species, were sourced from a regulated, commercially logged tropical forest.

Capital idea: Big Ben You’ve seen it on a million postcards and films, but Big Ben is still worth checking out up close. Contact your local member of Parliament to take a tour. You may be able to get onto the roof to get a real appreciation of the clock tower’s intricate detail and the brilliant craftmanship that went into building it. The name Big Ben actually refers only to the great bell that chimes every hour – probably after Sir Benjamin Hall, who commissioned the casting of

the bell – but has become shorthand for the whole clock and tower. The tower itself was built in 1288, while the clock first chimed 150 years ago. During the two World Wars the clock face was darkened at night, so as not to aid German air attacks. TS

BRITAIN EXPLAINED

Justine Walker / TNT Images, Getty Images

THE THAMES FLOOD BARRIER The prospect of being deluged by the sea would be a reality in London today without the Thames Flood Barrier. It protects London from going under – literally. At times of extreme high tide or storm surges (when high winds cause massive

tides and waves) the Thames would be at risk of bursting its banks and flooding London. But the Barrier – built in the 1970s and early ’80s – consists of a series of enormous gates raised from the riverbed to block the upper reaches of the river (stretching from the Cotswolds through central London) from the sea. LONDON

Spice things up

THE GRUB Razor-thin slices of meat prepared in succulent marinades and barbecued at your table. Wrap the tender morsels in lettuce leaves for the ultimate in finger food indulgence. Rice, noodles and soup are also on the menu. The ‘dolsot’ dishes – steamed rice with meat and veggies cooked and served in a hot stone bowl – are particularly

NATIONAL CURRY WEEK

As one of Britain’s favourite dishes, a whole week dedicated to curry comes as no surprise then. Good timing too – all this cold weather calls for a plate of something hot ’n’ spicy.

Camden Passage N1 8EA Made by an award-winning chocolatier, these are seriously delicious. Think little gooey squares of chocolate heaven.

Whole Foods Market Kensington High St W8 5SE These are a TNT office favourite – slightly pricier than most brownies, but with generous chunks of chocolate and exactly the right chewiness.

Rose Cafe pods. Add a little water or vegetable oil. Keeps in the fridge for up to one week. LONDON’S HOT SPOTS Brick Lane in the East End is renown for its budget-friendly

curry houses, but other areas in London are also worth visiting for some spicy food. Tooting, Ealing and, of course, ‘little India’ Southall have plenty of restaurants to tempt those tastebuds.

Dover Street Market, W1S 4LT Within the designer fashion emporium is this little cafe, offering brownies to die for. Their carrot cake is not to be scoffed at either.

CURRYING FAVOUR Chicken tikka masala may be a curry house staple here, but you’ll struggle to find it on a menu in India. Legend has it, a diner in the UK demanded gravy on his chicken tandoori, the Indian chef got creative and the dish was born. MAKE YOUR OWN While curry in a hurry means using a bottle of the store stuff, it’s really easy to make your own curry paste. Blend together 5 garlic cloves, 2cm piece of fresh root ginger, 1 red chilli, deseeded, 2 tsp ground cumin, 2 tsp ground coriander, 1 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp garam masala, and seeds from 4 cardamom

tasty, packing a chilli kick. BEHIND THE BAR Asahi beer, fruit tea, and the usual selection of soft drinks. BILL PLEASE Most main meals are around the £8 mark, with side dishes pushing up the bill. We spent £50 for two but practically rolled home. VERDICT All the fun of the barbie without threat from the weather. CLAIRE GOODALL

HOSTING DUTIES OVER: Popular Aussie variety show host Rove McManus has decided to quit after 10 years and three Gold Logie awards. McManus, 35, announced that the final show in the 2009 season, which was broadcast a week ago, would be his last, and said his future as a television host was uncertain. “It was a difficult call to make but after 10 years it felt like time to step away from the show and take a break to properly reflect on what I want to do next as a performer,” McManus said.

A BAD WEEK FOR

Three-time swimming gold medallist Grant Hackett has been dumped by Australia’s Channel 9 as its weekend sports news presenter. The network says they will still use Hackett for other gigs.

JACKSON GETS GORY Kiwi director Peter Jackson says he has had to take his movie The Lovely Bones back to the editing room to “basically add more violence and suffering”.

Instead of the common problem filmmakers encounter in having to cut scenes to qualify for a US movie rating aimed at teenagers, Jackson found test audiences wanted him to go the other way. Based on the 2002 bestselling book by Alice

Sebold, The Lovely Bones will open in New Zealand cinemas on Boxing Day. It tells the story of a murdered 14-year-old girl named Susie (Saoirse Ronan), who watches from her heavenly vantage point while her mourning family try to find her killer. Jackson told Reuters he was taken aback to find that in early screenings of the film, audiences “were not satisfied” with the death of one of the characters.

SAY WHAT?

”Just because you get older, your dick don’t fall off.” Ozzy Osbourne explains why he and wife Sharon still have a very active sex life.

Woman’s Weekly: Cover girl and TV presenter Hilary Timmins says she fell in love with the wrong man and is now single and starting over. Plus Katie Holmes and Kiwi girl Anna Paquin are hanging out while they film comedy The Romantics.

AUSTRALIA OK!: Australian Idol judge Jay Dee Springbett tells why he’s more family man than mean critic. Plus meet MasterChef’s cravat-loving judge Matt Preston. Meanwhile, it’s a world gone Twilight crazy with cover couple Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart going behind the scenes of this year’s most hyped-up vampire film.

SOUTH AFRICA YOU: An obsession with money and a certain cricket hero are being blamed for the collapse of model Minki’s marriage to Constant Visser. Plus Springbok captain John Smit talks about his romance with wife Roxy, rugby stardom and the price of fame. Meanwhile R-Patz and Kristen Stewart grace the cover as fans count down to the latest Twilight film.

WHERE

LOOK WHO’S TALKING ENTERTAINMENT

Jim Jeffries ‘Britain’s most offensive comedian’ is actually an Australian who is enjoying huge success in the USA INTERVIEW ALISON GRINTER You’ve gone supernova in the US with your own HBO show. That puts you in the same league as The Wire and The Sopranos. Are you worthy?

[Dirty laugh] I had a one-off comedy special. It’s hardly The Sopranos or The Wire. Well, Chris Rock, Will Ferrell and Ricky Gervais had the other ones [HBO specials] this year, so I’ll say I’m with them. But I’m not saying I’m in the same league as them either! You now share the same management as Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, correct?

No, I’m with the same agent. Agent and management are different. I’ve only now realised what the difference between the two is … But my movie guy is the same guy as Tom Cruise which is kinda cool. The only time they’ve ever said anything to me is, once this guy told me to be a bit careful with my Scientology jokes.

I’m going to be “ the most famous person on earth ” So are you looking to make the move to the big screen?

Well, you get a movie agent, a TV agent and a touring agent – they give you this whole team of people. It’s quite bizarre. I take all of it with a pinch of salt … It turns out I’m going to be the most famous person on earth, so they tell me, but it hasn’t happened yet [laughs]. What kind of movie would you make?

I’m going for auditions every week. I auditioned for the The Hangover, Extract, Funny People. For The Hangover I went for the part Ed Helms

got but it turns out he has a fake tooth, which he can take out and put in … he was without a tooth for three months. That probably got him the role. The irony of all your overseas success is that when you go home to Oz …

No one knows I exist in Australia! Exactly. Why the hell is that?

You know how Australia is! The Scottish people get behind Scottish [comedians]. The English alway get behind their people. Australians are always fascinated by anyone who’s travelled from overseas, but if you’re local you’re shit. Remember Jimeoin? He’s nobody in Britain but we got so excited by his accent. We thought it was the most fascinating thing on earth! In your stand up act you go into graphic detail about your sex life. What does your mum think?

My mum’s pretty cool. You know

like when you were a kid and your mum found a little bit of weed in your bedroom, well I said I was holding it for a friend of mine and she just believed me … but deep down she probably didn’t believe ya. But she’s ya mum and she wants you to do good. So whenever she hears anything about me shoving something up my arse, I just say it happened to a friend of mine. She has to believe me for her own mental health. Have you ever died spectacularly on stage?

There was the time I got punched at the Comedy Store in Manchester. There have been times when I’ve been booed off, or instances where I’ve let myself down by turning up drunk … Any comic who says they’ve never died on stage – they’re delusional.

» At Leicester Square Theatre, Leicester Pl, WC2H 7BX Leicester Square (0844 847 2475). Nov 26-28 and Dec 3-5. £15

YOU DON’T SAY? Who would play you in the film of your life? If I were casting it I’d want a younger John Cusack to play me. But if someone actually was casting me it would be Seth Rogen. What’s your porn star name? Mandy Gould – all my family pets when I was growing up had hot girl names. We had dogs called Mandy, Heidi and Gemma. What’s in your pockets right now? Well, I’ve actually taken my pants off since I got into the hotel. Hang on, let me look: a taxi receipt, 20 euros, some Scottish pounds and a lotta lint.

Amazing

DISGR ACE Bringing JM Coetzee’s literary masterwork Disgrace to the big screen was a tall order. But Australian director Steve Jacobs was up to the challenge WORDS ALISON GRINTER JM Coetzee

H

ow do you bring a literary masterpiece to the big screen? Or more to the point, how do you bring JM Coetzee’s complex, intense, brilliant tale of a miscreant professor who is being buffeted by the violent winds of change in post-apartheid South Africa to the big screen? Well, it helps if you get the notoriously reclusive writer onside for starters. “He was very professional and pleasant,” says director Steve Jacobs of the twice Booker Prize winner. Coetzee – who now resides in Adelaide – approved the script penned by Anna Maria Monticelli (Jacobs’ wife), leaving the director to assemble a cast worthy of the source material.

STRONG PERFORMANCES Faithful to Coetzee’s novel, the film centres around David Lurie, a divorced professor of romantic poetry with a penchant for visiting prostitutes and stalking young students, who is played beautifully by John Malkovich. “He’s a wonderful, iconic actor,” says Jacobs about Malkovich. “It demanded a performer who had the intelligence to make sense of such

■ CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY Alan Paton’s classic examination of the evils of apartheid was put to celluloid twice: first in 1951 and again in 1995. The latter starred James Earl Jones (better known as the voice of Darth Vader).

a complex character. With John, you know he knows what that poetry means.” Lurie is quite at home in Cape Town’s cosmopolitanism, where he works at the university. But after a sex scandal involving one of his students, he flees to the countryside to visit his daughter Lucy (Jessica Haines) on her remote farm. While there, he and Lucy are the victims of a brutal farm invasion (she is gang-raped, he is burned). The perpetrators are black and may be known to Petrus (Eriq Ebouaney), the black farm worker who lives near by. The resultant trauma brings into relief not only the ideological divide between father and daughter, but also the faultline between old the power structures of South Africa and the new.

STUNNING BACKDROP Aside from the impressive performances by the lead actors, the South African landscape also has a starring role in Disgrace. Shot in and around the Cederberg National Park, the film’s rugged terrain provides a vivid contrast to the seemingly refined, urban Cape Town. “What was interesting was here was a situation of a Western environment, which is the university and the city, and liberal lifestyles and seemingly tolerant views of the world,

and then when you get to the country you get to what the earth is about. The people are quite insignificant in that landscape,” says Jacobs (pictured below). “One needed to bring the landscape into the film so the drama of the human beings is set up against the forces of life and death, which is the harshness of survival in that region.”

Acclaimed poet and writer Antjie Krog reluctantly allowed her account of reporting on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to be made into a film starring Juliet Binoche and Samuel L Jackson.

■ GOODBYE BAFANA Based on the not-entirelyreliable memoirs of James Gregory who supposedly befriended Nelson Mandela while guarding him for 20 years on Robben Island.

■ INVICTUS CAUSING CONTROVERSY Disgrace is a powerful film, which, like Coetzee’s novel, shines a light on an unpalatable truth about the new South Africa: that all power flips, even ones with largely positive outcomes, have victims. The film also has uncomfortable echoes of Zimbabwe’s land grabs, and raised hackles in South Africa when it was released there. “There were people who were passionately for and against it,” explains Jacobs. “I had people totally for it, this brutal but realistic view of their country, and people who felt it was a betrayal of their country.” Disgrace isn’t an easy film to watch but then Jacobs wouldn’t have it any other way. “Like the book, it asks you to start questioning your own prejudices,” he says. ”We didn’t want to take the easy option of you don’t have to think about this – [that] you can walk away and have an ice cream.”

» Disgrace opens December 4 at ICA, The Mall, SW1Y 5AH Piccadilly Circus (020 7930 3647).

Morgan Freeman bought the film rights to John Carlin’s Playing The Enemy – which tells how Nelson Mandela used the 1995 Rugby World Cup to unite the nation – so he could play the great man himself.

Paranormal Activity

SCREEN TEST: SPOOKY FILMS

Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat

STARRING:

RT 99 MINS

1 In what movie featuring ghost-fighting good guys does the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man make an appearance? 2 Who starred in the 2001 unsettling thriller The Others? 3 What film features the line, “I see dead people”? 4 Which filmmaker directed the 1968 movie (and all round general spook fest) Rosemary’s Baby? 5 What’s the name of the movie about crop circles which starred Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix?

★★★★★

Paranormal Activity is proof that, when it comes to horror films, less is often more. Shot for small change on a camcorder, it takes the Blair Witch recipe to success and cooks up something heartstoppingly frightening. Couple Katie (Featherston) and Micah (Sloat) are experiencing some weird goings-on in their new house. At night, stuff is moved around, while they can hear footsteps and whispering. To determine whether the house is really haunted, Micah sets up his camcorder at the foot of their bed each night and looks at the footage during the day. It might not seem like much of a plot, but by building tension slowly and suggesting evil rather than showing it, director Oren

Peli has delivered a film that will test your bowel control. The scenes in the couple’s bedroom are particularly chilling, as the movement of a door or a billowing duvet make the skin crawl. True, the ‘shock’ ending

doesn’t really do justice to the excellent build-up, but for sheer creativity and sudden jolts, few films this year come close to Paranormal Activity. GOOD FOR: Those with nerves of steel. PIERRE DE VILLIERS

THE REEL DEAL Courteney Cox says she will return to horror in Scream 4. The 45-year-old Cougar Town and Friends star says she’s excited about the upcoming slasher sequel being written by Kevin Williamson, who scripted the first two films in the popular horror trilogy. Cox met her husband, 38-year-old actor David Arquette, on the set of the first Scream film in 1996. “There are really only a few of us that survived,” says Cox.

SERAPHINE

★★★★★ The incredible true story of Seraphine Louis, who went from French cleaning lady to famous artist in the early 1900s, is brought to the big screen in an interesting, if flawed, biopic. Director Martin Provost fails to get under the skin of Louis, but the film is rescued by a career-best central turn from Yolande Moreau. GOOD FOR: Art lovers. PDV

CULTURE CHANGE In under two hours, Italian quick-change artist Arturo Brachetti gets through more outfits than a battery of supermodels. Now in his fifties, he proves an engaging and nimble performer, let down only by a sluggish post-interval tribute to film director Frederico Fellini and Sean Foley’s superfluous script. However, the show is crammed with delightful moments. In the blink of an eye Brachetti changes from a punk to the Queen, and in a tribute to Hollywood transforms himself from Nosferatu to Gene Kelly,

The Wallabies’ season reached a shocking new low with a humiliating 9-8 loss to Scotland at Murrayfield. Flyhalf Matt Giteau missed a conversion attempt two minutes into stoppage time that would have saved Australia’s blushes after Ryan Cross had scored the game’s only try. The stunning victory was Scotland’s first over Australia since 1982, ending a painful run of 16 successive losses to the Wallabies. Compounding the Wallabies’ woes were suspected tour-ending injuries to key forwards Wycliff Palu and Benn Robinson. The game had to be stopped for several

minutes midway through the second half as Palu was transported from the field on a medicab with his neck in a brace after he collided heavily with Scottish forward Nick de Luca. Robinson lasted just 17 minutes before he was forced off with a shoulder injury. The writing was on the wall with the scores locked at 3-3 at half-time after Giteau missed a routine penalty goal attempt in the 37th minute and then also pushed a drop goal attempt wide seconds before the break. Australia dominated possession and territory throughout the match, but found themselves behind 6-3 when Scotland flyhalf Phil Godman landed a 57th-minute penalty goal which struck the left upright before falling over.

Referee Stuart Dickinson has been criticised for his handling of scrums

Saracens roll Springboks World champions South Africa suffered their third successive defeat on their European tour as Saracens flyhalf Derick Hougaard kicked a late winning drop-goal at Wembley. Saracens were 18-6 down at the break but recovered thanks to early second-half tries by Ernst Joubert and Brad Barritt. Hougaard, a former Springbok, then downed his native country with a goal five minutes from time. An extra edge had been added to the game, labelled jokingly by some as South Africa B versus South Africa D. South Africa coach Peter de Villiers accused Saracens director of rugby Brendan Venter of ‘unethical’ behaviour after the latter watched the Boks squad in a skills session.

New Zealand coach Graham Henry said he was glad to have “some reality” at the scrum after the world referees’ chief slammed Australian referee Stuart Dickinson’s display in their match against Italy. Paddy O’Brien, a New Zealander and director of elite referees at the International Rugby Board, took the extraordinary step of publicly saying Dickinson’s repeated penalising of the All Blacks at the scrum was “completely wrong”. “We need to educate that referee and get him better, because that scrummaging was not up to international standard,” O’Brien said.

All Blacks coach Graham Henry said he would have a quiet word with Neemia Tialata and Cory Jane after they revealed their non-selection to face England more than 24 hours early. Tialata and Jane both revealed on their Twitter pages they would be resting from the match against England, having started all three Tests on the tour to that point. The coach said he would remind them about publicly revealing their selections. “I haven’t lost any sleep over it, I haven’t even thought about it really. I saw the headline, shrugged my shoulders and got on [with it],” Henry said. “We announce the team on Monday to the guys and they probably thought it was going to be announced to the media during that day. “A quiet reminder tomorrow won’t go astray but it’s not a major. There won’t be six of the cane in the corner.”

The All Blacks repelled a much-improved England 19-6 in a dour rugby test at Twickenham as they kept their opponents tryless for a seventh consecutive northern hemisphere international. World champions South Africa ended their three-match losing run with a 32-10 victory against error-strewn Italy. The Springboks came into the match on the back of an unusual losing run but quickly found their form to deal Italy their 13th-straight defeat. Bryan Habana, Fourie du Preez, Jacque Fourie and Wynand Olivier all touched down, while Morne Steyn kicked 10 points and substitute Ruan Pienaar added a late conversion for the world champions. Gayle leaves squad The West Indies were poised to call in a replacement for captain Chris Gayle who flew home to the Caribbean to be with his sick mother.

Take a punt

It was not known if Gayle would return in time for the first Test against Australia at the Gabba on Thursday. If Gayle could not return it would be a massive blow to the tourists. Not only was the swashbuckling left-hander his side’s most intimidating batsman and captain, but he

was just one of two specialist openers picked in the 15-man tour squad. The Windies, who resolutely staved off an embarrassing defeat at the hands of

Queensland on Saturday, were giving Gayle until Monday to return from Jamaica. The West Indies finally had something to smile up about in their four-day match against Queensland in Brisbane. Former captains Shivnarine Chanderpaul (69) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (66) combined for a crucial 131-run fifth wicket stand to ultimately claim a draw. Trailing by 346 on the first innings, the Windies were 6-357 when play was stopped.

Lee admits career might be finished Brett Lee was set to spend the summer contemplating his sporting future with limitedovers cricket looking like his only avenue back to the top. The 33-year-old speedster was expected to be out of the game for up to three months with an elbow injury, effectively ending his hopes of anything but a fleeting return to the Test scene. He admitted the ravages on his body from fast bowling and the pain from being apart from his three-year-old son Preston for long periods of

time had taken their toll. “How long will that hunger be there for? I really do not know,” he said. “As I said, I have to be honest with you and say there are a lot of things that I have to work out both with cricket and my personal life moving forward. “There is a lot more to me than a fast bowler.” With younger bowlers having moved ahead of him in Australia’s Test ranks, Lee’s prospects of pulling on the baggy green again look slim.

“This is an insult to some of our great Olympic champions. Is Mr Crawford suggesting the gold medals won in Beijing by Matthew Mitcham, Steve Hooker and Ken Wallace meant nothing to the Australian people?” Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates, on the Crawford report, which questioned the funding given to Olympic sports. “The World Cup – it’s bigger than the Olympic 100m final. There’s absolutely nothing on this earth that’s bigger.” All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen on qualifying for the biggest show on earth. “We are not trying to take over rugby … Don’t get me wrong, I love rugby, but sometimes they need to share the limelight.” All Whites hero Rory Fallon. “I’d strongly encourage the powers that be to get straight on the phone to Guus for a number of reasons.” Former Socceroo Craig Foster calls on Football Federation Australia to approach Guus Hiddink (pictured) for a World Cup role after Russia failed to qualify.

Football Federation Australia will wait until the Socceroos’ World Cup group opponents are known before considering the possibility of playing New Zealand in a lead-up match.

With Australia and New Zealand headed to a World Cup together for the first time, there have been calls for the teams to renew their onceintense rivalry. The Socceroos have not played the All Whites since a friendly in the lead-up to the Confederations Cup in 2005. They used to meet regularly in World Cup qualification before Australia switched to the Asian Football Confederation from Oceania. their World Cup group. That could make finding time for a trans-Tasman match in Australia difficult, but FFA did not rule it out. The official draw for the World Cup will be on December 4 in Cape Town.

The 40-year-old fourdivision world champion and American boxing superstar arrived in Sydney with his manager on Sunday morning. One of the great pound-forpound fighters of the modern era, Jones is bidding to become the first man to hold world title belts in every division between middleweight and heavyweight. After coming through customs he fired off some pithy one-liners before being driven off in a stretch limousine. Asked by reporters if he was

going to win inside the distance, Jones replied, “He won’t go the distance, no way.” Three-division world title belt holder Green will be making the first defence of his cruiserweight crown. He is four years younger than his opponent, but that didn’t bother Jones. Told that Green had

reportedly lost respect for him, Jones wasn’t too concerned. “I think he’ll have that by round five, I bet you,” he said. Jones said his preparations had progressed without setbacks and he would find some Australian fighters to spar with and would most likely be based at Tony Mundine’s inner-Sydney gym.

UNDESERVED CRITICISM New Zealand copped their share of flak at the tail-end of the Tri-Nations, but McCaw insists

his men weren’t too far off the triumphant Springboks, who beat the All Blacks three times in a row this year. “South Africa played really well,” the New Zealand captain says. “They didn’t give us or the Aussies much chance and they really punished our mistakes. But we weren’t totally out of those games, so it was a matter of eliminating those mistakes, knowing that there was nothing disastrously wrong.” The trip to the northern hemisphere seems to have given the All Blacks a real spur, something McCaw attributes to the intense focus that usually accompanies a gruelling end-of-year tour. “The Tri-Nations is pretty stop-start, you have a week or two off here and there, but on tour the guys are all together and training together. That adds up to everyone being in better shape,” the flanker says. “It was a big focus for senior players to

Getty Images

In recent times, McCaw has come under attack from opponents who claim he regularly over-steps the mark at the breakdown. In August, Sydney’s Daily Telegraph labelled McCaw “a serial offender with a shopping list of illegal plays” in one match, “flagrantly entering the side of the ruck at least seven times, and contesting kicks while offside on three occasions.” McCaw might tread a fine line, but branding one of rugby’s champions “a cheat” smacks of sour grapes.

or so many years the All Blacks travelled to the northern hemisphere, preceded by a fearsome reputation and winning form. They completed grand slams in 2005 and 2008, leaving shattered Europeans in their wake. Their reputation is still largely intact, but this year the All Blacks arrived on these shores searching for rhythm, and captain Richie McCaw claims his men were intent on restoring their winning ways. “Losing four Tests – we’re not so used to that, so it was a frustrating year for us. But the gap between the end of the Tri-Nations and then coming over, that allowed us to take a real look at ourselves,” McCaw says. “You can’t change what’s happened, but you can learn from it and this tour has been like starting over.”

KICKING ON The All Blacks are famous for playing rugby admired by purists, with their emphasis on passing and carrying the ball. But a willingness to kick has crept in recently – a sign, the cynics claim, the team’s dynamism has deserted them. “Kicking’s a big part of rugby now, rightly or wrongly, and the South Africans showed how lethal it can be if you chase well,” McCaw says. “We’ve always liked to carry the ball and throw

it around, but you need to build pressure to do that, and that’s where mistakes have cost us.“ The All Blacks have also been forced to adapt to the loss of experienced players following the 2007 World Cup. Their depth has been tested, but McCaw has been encouraged by the results. “We’ve got some new fellas who have come in, but that’s not all bad,” he says. “You can’t look at it like, ‘we’re buggered after losing those experienced blokes’. You have to keep going.”

THE ROAD AHEAD Victory over France this weekend will see the All Blacks return home with some of their swagger restored. But, having watched France beat the Boks, McCaw expects a titanic struggle. “France were really physical, and they were basically the first side this year to out-muscle South Africa,” he says. “They have a really strong forward pack, big backs and good kickers, so there’s a fair bit of ammo.” Beyond this tour, the 2011 World Cup looms large, but McCaw isn’t looking too far ahead. “What happens two years out from a World Cup means nothing,” he says. “The key is to improve every match and the long-term stuff takes care of itself.”

THE SUMMER AFTER Simon Katich is determined to help Australia shake off the hangover of Ashes defeat when they return to the Test arena this week WORDS TOM STURROCK

ustralian cricket woke with a sore head after this past English summer. Amid the blur, the preceding months made for uncomfortable recollection: “We what? We lost the Ashes? Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann gutted us in the decider? I don’t believe you – that would never happen.” Alas, that’s exactly what happened and Australia must now suck down a restorative cranberry juice and head back into the office as the five-day hostilities resume. Opening batsman Simon Katich insists Australia need to pull together if they are to emerge, fortified rather than diminished, from the shadows of the summer before. “You want every individual knowing his role and contributing,” Katich says. “We did that beautifully in South Africa earlier this year, but not so well in England.”

RISING FROM THE ASHES After Australia famously lost the Ashes in the 2005, sweeping changes were made to the side. Katich was dropped, along with Damien Martyn, Michael Clarke and Jason Gillespie. Four years later, similar upheaval is unlikely. “The difference is that we played better cricket throughout,” Katich says. “The individual stats were pretty good, whereas in 2005 there were a few guys who struggled.” Katich is right. Statistically, Australia smashed the Poms. This year, seven of the top eight run-scorers were Aussies, as were the top three wicket-takers. But England won the big moments. “It came to a huge finish – and we

were very disappointed by the way it unfolded at the Oval. We needed to bat well in the first innings to set the game up and we didn’t do that,” Katich says. “We beat South Africa coming in, but we took a big step back by losing the Ashes.”

THE SUMMER AHEAD The first Test against the West Indies begins on Thursday, and Australian fans would probably prefer a tougher assignment after losing the Ashes. A hard-fought win over India or South Africa would prove the Aussies are back in their groove, whereas Ricky Ponting smashing

THE SPECULATIVE INS AND OUTS OPENING QUESTION Shane Watson seems likely to move down the order, replaced by a specialist, such as Phil Jaques or Phil Hughes, at the top. But the timing of the switch depends on the fortunes of Mike Hussey. MIKE HUSSEY He scored a century in his last Test innings and has strong ODI form, but since May 2008 he’s made 1129 runs at an average of 32. He’s vulnerable, and needs early runs if he’s to see Boxing Day. THE BOWLING ATTACK Will Australia go with four quicks or find room for a spinner? Australia took a “ big step back by losing the Ashes ” Sulieman Benn around the Gabba won’t cut it. Unsurpisingly, Katich doesn’t see it that way. “There’s been a lot of speculation that the West Indies won’t be competitive, but I don’t buy that at all,” he says, perhaps generously. “We’ll be playing at home, so we should be the favourites, but when we played in the West Indies last year, some of the Tests were close.”

IT’S TOUGH AT THE TOP There’s an unusual situation in the NSW side, of which Katich is captain. With Shane Watson defecting from Queensland, the Blues now have both Australia’s incumbent openers in their squad. But neither of them open for NSW, with Phil Hughes and Phil Jaques preferred. “It is unusual. Sometimes it just pans out that way,” Katich says. “We just try to pick a team with the best balance for NSW – we’re all pretty flexible about where we bat.” The 34-year-old (right) has become accustomed to chopping and changing at the top of the order. He fought his way back into the Australian side 18 months ago – initially as a stand-in for Matthew Hayden. But since then, he has become the constant – the mainstay on a merrygo-round – batting with four different opening partners in the past 18 Tests. “I’ve managed to hang in there – a few people probably thought that wouldn’t be the case,” Katich says. “Hughes and I struck up a good partnership, but Watson came in and did well. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

In need of ASSISTANTS If you’re in office support, here’s what you need to know about the improving job market WORDS ELIZABETH EUN

T

here’s finally a glimmer of hope in the recruitment sector for secretarial and support workers. Those in the know say the job market is looking up, which means all you PAs who’ve been ripping up your CVs in frustration now have something to fight for.

TNT Images

WHAT’S GOING ON? After months of job freezes and redundancy cuts, there’s been a significant increase in appointments in the financial sector as well as within commerce and industry, with both permanent and temp jobs available. According to Nick Dutton, of recruitment firm Robert Walters, there’s now competition in the marketplace, whereas in previous quarters small businesses were doing most of the hiring. “Some companies see it as a great time to attract top staff when bigger institutions don’t hire,” Dutton says. “But some of those bigger institutions are now starting to hire again.” Luckily, if you’re a competitive candidate, you’ll be able to pick between the two. THE RIGHT SKILLS There’s no need to be afraid of being overqualified. In a time when saving money is vital, companies are more than happy to take you on and wring out what they can,

so it’s important to have skills beyond your duties. Being a PA is no longer restricted to front-of-house responsibilities, so if you can learn a new language or the dynamics of office management, you’ll be a better candidate.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS Salaries for PAs and adminstrators are still quite stable (see box), but be realistic about bonuses. “If people assume bonuses are going to be absolutely spectacular, I think that’s a bit misguided given all of the press that’s out at the moment,” says Dutton. What companies can offer instead are more opportunities. “Candidates who are highly motivated, and highly driven and demonstrate good skill sets are the ones finding more in the marketplace,” says Dutton. THE FUTURE Although there’s no guarantee the job market will keep improving, there’s also no major signs of it declining. Dutton says there will be a natural slowdown in permanent job opportunities in December and January, but this will be offset with the standard increase in holiday temp jobs.

TNT Weekender Paris FRANCE

Paris is one of the world’s greatest cities. It drips with culture and beauty, making it a visitor’s delight. But even if you stay away from the tourist traps, which you really shouldn’t, there’s so much to love about a city that takes itself seriously.

HEADLINE ATTRACTION The landmark that instantly says France, the Eiffel Tower, isn’t as cheesy as you might expect. Not only is the view from the top pretty darn good, it’s a fantastic people-watching spot. The chances of seeing a man go down on bended knee to pop the question are higher here than any other place on earth. The queues to the top can get long but you can book ahead at tour-eiffel.fr.

TNT Images

BEST OF THE REST Take the time to meander along the River Seine. In summer, “beaches” are set up on the river’s banks and you can hire deck chairs to soak up the sun. Between February and November, cruise the

Seine on one of the cities’ hopon, hop-off river boats. A day pass will cost you €12 and sights include the Eiffel Tower, Musée d’Orsay and Notre Dame cathedral.

HILLTOP HOOD Grab a croissant and start your day at the Sacré-Coeur Basilica in Montmartre. It’s the highest point in Paris and offers a great perspective of the city. The surrounding streets and alleys are an escape from the thriving metropolis.

and Renoir, and cultural hub the Pompidou Centre, worth the visit for the building’s design alone.

RETAIL THERAPY After walking out of the Louvre you might need to unwind with a good dose of retail therapy. Be warned, your credit card may also need therapy afterwards because the famous shopping stretch Champs-Élysées is lined with top designer retailers, such as Louis Vuitton, where you often have to line up to get in.

GET THE CAMERA OUT

MUSEUM TIME If you’re into art, the Louvre museum is heaven. If you’re not, you’ll probably race around looking for Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, before trying to take a sneaky picture on your mobile phone. There’s also the Musée d’Orsay where you can admire the works by Monet

Situated at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe is the world’s most famous roundabout. Initially built as a monument to fallen soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars, you can climb to the top for a great view of the city.

SHOPPING CENTRE Back in town, you’ll find the Rynek Glówny, the largest medieval market square in Europe. It’s dominated by the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall), a glittering hall of souvenir stalls, which looks particularly pretty at night when it’s illuminated. Once you’ve done your Christmas shopping you can get cosy in one of the many cellar bars and clubs lining the square. Another plus of visiting Krakow in winter is the Christmas Market (until December 23), where you can browse traditional Polish crafts and gorge on local food cooked on massive grills. The problem is this, Terry: in December it’s dark and very cold in these places, and no one wants to go there. So day trips to Greenland that run from Iceland don’t happen at this time of year. When flights to Greenland do run (June to September) they’re operated by Air Iceland (airiceland.is) and prices start at £384. As for the North Pole, even the polar bears think twice about strolling across the ice to what is a godforsaken place at this time of year. Sea voyages to what is an unspectacular area of ice-covered water are offered by Discover The World (discover-the-world.co.uk) and start at £14,802. That’s not a misprint, this is a trip for the very rich with an itch to scratch. Console yourself with the news that you have a great chance of catching the northern lights while you’re in Iceland, and that there are an endless number of hot springs in which to warm up. We haven’t had a competition for a while, so I’m offering two copies of Lonely Planet’s Best In Travel 2010 for the reader who can tell me which country placed a plaque bearing its flag at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean, symbolising its claim on the area’s natural resources?

Many moons ago, my brother and I took the long road to Milan. This eventful journey involved a cross-channel ferry, a slow train to Paris and a lazy lollop across the French capital. There, enamoured more by Parisian ladies than train timetables – how times change – we had a last-minute sprint at the Gare du Lyon to board our night train across Switzerland. We found ourselves without seat reservations too, so passed the evening hanging out of the window as our train snaked its way up through the Alps on a summer’s night, which is still arguably my favourite journey ever. That’s one option, and even if you don’t fancy recreating this trip step by step, taking the Eurostar to Paris, then another train to Milan – after crossing the city on Metro or on foot – is a great way to travel. You could break the journey pretty much anywhere in eastern France, though Lyon makes the most sense. Or stop in Switzerland and see Geneva or Lausanne, or better still delve deep into the Alps with a week or more to mess around. Another suggestion would be to fly to Naples and amble north to Milan via Rome, Florence and Venice.

Email your words of wisdom to traveltips@tntmagazine.com. Tip of the Week wins a Lonely Planet guide and other published tips win a fiver.

KIWIS WIN GREEN GONG A tourism company founded by four Maori families in New Zealand has scooped the top prize at this year’s Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards. Whale Watch Kaikoura, whose activities make minimal impact on the environment, was acclaimed for developing a tourism initiative that had gone on to such success that it now had a joint venture with the Gold Coast’s Sea World to provide its whale watching. The judges pointed out: “Rarely do we see a tourism initiative developed from the ground up by a local community to such a successful and grand scale. Whale Watch Kaikoura provides consistently responsible whale

The large village forged a unique reputation as hippies, beatniks and holistic practitioners tried to create a new Bohemia. It’s easy to see why many of them stayed in a town blessed with a sub-tropical climate, guaranteeing an average yearly temperature of 21.5˚C.

TO MARKET, TO MARKET The heart of Tepoztlán is its market (main image). Although fairly quiet during the week, on Sunday it’s a joyous riot of noise, smells and colour. Traders sell everything from decorative silver, to cooking utensils and intricate wooden carvings called alebrijes. There are also stalls piled high with mouth-watering local food, such as quesadillas, enchiladas and moles to name a few. The town, just 80km from Mexico City, has been attracting travellers since the ’60s, seducing the likes of Tobias and his predecessors into staying far longer than they intended. Despite being so close, Tepoztlán is a world away from the kamikaze traffic and dense smog of the Mexican capital. It’s a confection of quaint, spindly roads, which converge in a historic centre, surrounded by a mountaintopped valley. Don’t leave Mexico without trying pulque. This alcoholic brew’s origins can be traced back more than 2000 years, when the Aztecs extracted the juice of the agave (maguey) plant. They called the frothy, milky concoction octli poliqhui and it was considered sacred in their culture – it was only drunk at certain times, such as at festivals, by specific groups of people.

77

A SPANISH TOUCH Perhaps surprisingly, it was the Spanish who gave pulque its modern name, after they conquered Mexico in the 1520s. For the next 300 years, consumption of the alcoholic beverage increased. However, during the 20th century sales of pulque fell rapidly due to competition, as immigrants from Europe imported their own cheap beer into Mexico.

Tolo Balaguer / PhotoLibrary, TNT Images, Getty Images, John Mitchell / Alamy

DRINKING IT TODAY Today people buy pulque in the same way they have done for generations: in traditional canteens/bars (pulquerías) or wholesale from huge vats called tinacals (below). When pulque is flavoured with fruit juice, such as orange or pineapple, or has nuts added to it, it’s labelled as curado.

It’s all worth it when we reach the top, and I realise why pilgrims flocked from as far afield as Guatemala to visit the religious site. Witness a plethora of huge white stone ruins spread over a 10km expanse. As this area used to be an important religious and commercial settlement from about 650AD to 1200AD, it has traces of Toltec, Aztec, Mixtec and Zapotec communities. Perhaps the most spectacular structure is the Pirámide de Quetzalcóatl. Another eye-opener is the Observatory, a dank, subterranean passage in which, due to its previous use to study the sun, a dazzling shaft of light shines.

Situated in the modern city boundary of Cuernavaca, Teopanzolco has constructions mostly dating back to the 14th century. Literally meaning ‘the place of the old temple’ and erected on a hill formed out of lava flow, this archaeological site has a much smaller radius than many other Aztec remains, due to a lot of it being underneath the latterday development of Vista Hermosa. But don’t let that put you off. These atmospheric rocky outcrops and their surrounding manicured lawns are a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, a photo opportunity or a picnic – a great way to enjoy the next phase of your journey.

Seeking Conrad, Saffa living in Switzerland: I’m trying to

if this is you, email me at yudee_dancer@hotmail.com.

track down Conrad, a South African from Cape Town, who is now living in Zurich. We met at the Springboks v France game in Toulouse on November 13, spent an awesome evening together, got bounced from a random club at stupid o’clock and had a nightmare trying to get a cab home. I lost him after the kebab shop :( and am kicking myself for not giving him my number. Hoping someone in London knows him as I know he lived here for a bit. I am reachable on ainsleeh@ hotmail.com. Fingers crossed.

My liefste Liberty McGregor:

It’s been more than a year and I still miss you more every day. Life is just not the same without our goodge times – have you gone to Piemelbier yet? Hope to see you soon, your liefste Monique Hurley. Dearest green shirt!: You: tall and handsome. Me: short, brunette and cute! We fly on the same day. Just a few days apart! What are the chances we land in the same place, but unfortunately as you head south I go north. I was on a mission in the one and only She Bu Walkie, which you interrupted and took my breath away. We found each other time and time again on the night, but still I let you get

of importance to someone as it has ‘Sam 84-09’ printed on the bottom of it, which may mean it represents someone who has passed away. The hoodie is blue and also has ‘West Coast Scallers’ on it. It was found on Thursday, November 5. I feel pretty bad as I mistook it for

mine. Cheers, Scott. Email scottnsmall@hotmail.com. Cute Kiwi girl named Jo (Anna Rowberry) at bar in Milan after the All Blacks Test: We met at

the Victoria bar (I think that was the name of the bar), I said you looked like Anna Rowberry and we had a pretty good time, but never exchanged numbers. Anyway if you’re out there and reading this, get in touch with me before you head home to NZ … it could be the best thing you ever do! Dan Carter. See tntmagazine.com/ seeking. Ugly Duckling in Camden November 18: To the cute girl

you’re single, you should be out there experimenting and having fun. Maybe you’re not into oral sex because the women
