How do the young ones cope here with the shortage of jobs, exorbitant rents and expensive travel costs? We are a young-at-heart, middle-aged couple who have been globetrotting for the past few years while working to continue our travels. Yes, we are very fortunate indeed to have had this experience. We have now run out of money as we can’t seem to find any sort of work here. Regrettably, it will be time to fold up the travel brochures, and call NZ home, and it feels almost like we have failed. But this is the real life out there, a recession in all things. We are the fortunate ones, I guess, in that we still have resources back in NZ, but we feel we are quitting when the going gets tough. This is a sobering fact – middle aged people can’t find work here in London! Go you young ones, while you can, make the most of this wonderful multi-cultural

A PLANNER IN THE WORKS Thanks very much for your magazine. I love reading it every week. I was wondering if you could tell us when the issue containing the 2010 calendar will be out, please? I love being able to hang it on my wall and see the whole year rather than flipping month by month. I enjoy highlighting any important dates for family back home and crossing off big sections with my planned holidays. I noticed that you included details of the Glastonbury festival last year and hoped you might be able to do the same for some of the other big ones, both within the UK and Europe. I tried to find something similar myself online, but didn’t have much success. Megan, via email Ed: Our 2010 wallplanner will be included in TNT 1372, out on December 14.

YOUR SAY LIVE FOR THE MOMENT
I’d like to blow a big raspberry to all the so-called experts out there in the media and finance worlds who just love revelling in their roles as economic crystal ball readers and deluding us poor members of the public. Before the global economic crisis hit, we were being told the good times would go on forever. Then the bubble burst and they forecast nothing less

than a full-scale global depression, to rival the one in the 1930s. But now, though there are people doing it tough, things are picking up. Every time I’ve been to Westfield or Oxford Street recently, they have been rammed with shoppers. So the moral is: live for the moment. I’m over worrying – I’m off to book a trip to Morocco for my girlfriend and me.

PIG’S EAR BEER FESTIVAL £3 WHAT: In its 26th year, this celebration of beer, cider and hearty winter food is one of East London’s favourite festive events. WHEN: December 1-5, noon-10.30pm DO IT BECAUSE: It’s a chance to get out and about in the East End, while also spending an afternoon getting fed and watered. With more than 200 ales to choose from, you’ll develop a taste for beers you don’t normally see on tap at your local. Probably a good idea to have a plan for getting home.

Capital idea: Palace of Westminster The Palace of Westminster sits on the north bank of the Thames and is home to British Parliament, with the House of Lords and the House of Commons. You might not be keen on British politics, but that’s no reason to snub this spectacular building. Its oldest part dates back to the 11th century – a reminder of just how bloody ancient this country is. From the outside, the building is a remarkable spectacle, especially when
it’s lit up at night. Few places will make you feel as if you’re at the heart of London as here. To get inside, head to the Cromwell Green visitor entrance when MPs are sitting (avoid Wednesdays) and say you want to watch a debate – you’ll be able to see the historic chambers and maze of corridors and stairways. TV LICENCES Since 1946, owning a TV in Britain means you have to pay an annual licence fee – £142.50 for a colour set and £48 for a black and white one. In 2008-09, TV licensing generated £3.49 billion, most of which funds BBC services. The law allows for a maximum fine of £1000 for non-payment, but the average fine is £150. The licence fee ensures the BBC’s
status as one of the UK’s most hotly-debated cultural institutions. Supporters of the fee claim it frees the public broadcaster from commercial and political pressures. Critics say it gives the BBC an unfair competitive advantage. It also makes it more gun-shy in the wake of scandals such as Russell Brand’s (left) Sachsgate. TS

IS ROBBIE ENAGAGED? Robbie Williams proposed to his girlfriend on live radio while on tour in Australia, but it’s still unclear whether the former Take That star is actually engaged.
Williams was on Australia’s Kyle And Jackie O radio show with his American girlfriend Ayda Field when he popped the question. But according to a report in the Daily Telegraph, the singer’s spokesman said the proposal was just a joke. ‘’He did say
it, but he did it in a jocular manner. They are not engaged,’’ the spokesman told the London newspaper. The radio presenters told Williams and Field that Sydney has a reputation for celebrity proposals, and asked if the couple would consider getting married. After a few seconds of dead air, which Field called ‘’awkward’’, Williams popped the question and Field accepted the proposal.

Yeah, I’m pretty outdoorsy. Growing up in Australia, even if you don’t think you are particularly sporty, when you come to England you realise you actually are. I also grew up in England so I am half and half. I remember my brother was in the B cricket team in Australia and here he was the star player at his school. So, do you consider yourself Australian or English?
Um, both. Actually, no, I’m Australian. Are you going home for Christmas?
I usually do, but not this year. My sisterin-law is pregnant with twins here in England. She can’t travel so I’ll be having a cold Christmas. I love London, so it should be good. How do you relax in the city?
Well, I’m an Aussie so I have a drink [laughs]. Red wine. I’m trying to cut down but it’s great fun isn’t it? I also do yoga, a canal walk or go to the National Portrait Gallery. Many TNT readers will know you from news parody CNNNN. What was it like to work on the show?
It was amazing. I was at university
YOU DON’T SAY? What was your nickname at school?
Mark Campbell / Rex Features
Skellenator. Why? Because I was in Australia. What are your guilty pleasures?
Champagne for breakfast, and also chocolate. What song always gets you on the dance floor.
Hey Ya! by OutKast.
in Sydney and The Chaser boys said I should come and audition for the show. Initially I didn’t want to because I had a bad experience doing TV before, but it turned out really nicely. They are such comic geniuses. A few years ago there was a public spat between two of your former boyfriends, Chaser host Chris Taylor and Whitlams singer Tim Freedman. What did you make of that?
You know what, I don’t really want to talk about it. The way I look at it, the
more I discuss my private life, the more the press will be interested in it. I remember someone once asked Holly Hunter how she dealt with the press attention and she said if you don’t speak to the media and tell them you are having a baby then they don’t hound you.
For the film “ crew it was like watching porn ” In The Descent 2 you are chased by monsters in a cave. Just how tough was the shoot physically?
It was pretty tough. There is one scene where I was hanging from a rope and I had to create a pendulum with my own body. I had been working out and doing lots of caving and climbing before the movie to get really strong. I got so into it, I flung myself onto a ledge and winded myself. I got a massive bruise on my chest. It sounds like you really went the extra mile on this one.
Yeah, but the people you should really feel sorry for are the actors dressed as the bad guys, the ‘crawlers’. There was this woman who only wore a tiny thong, with full body paint and KY jelly. In one scene I’m hanging from a rope and she has her legs around me and we are having a fight mid-air, and three storeys up. The whole crew was in heaven. For them, it was like watching porn!

You can count the number of good horror sequels on the fingers of one severed hand. It comes as little surprise then, that The Descent 2 follows its cave-exploring cast into the depths of misery. Basically telling the same story as the original film, only with slightly more diverse monster fodder, this is as derivative as things get in the horror genre. Picking up where the first Descent left off, we catch up with Sarah (McDonald), seemingly the lone survivor of the group of friends attacked by the goblin-like ‘crawlers’ while caving. With the police looking for answers to what happened to her mates, she is taken back underground along with a rescue party, including Aussie Cath (Skellern). But it doesn’t take long before the

crawlers catch wind of a new buffet in their presence. To try to build suspense, director Jon Harris starts things slowly, a good ploy if the characters weren’t so boring. There are a few moments of inspired gallows
humour – at one point two actresses literally get shat on – but it’s not enough to save a film that will kill the Descent franchise dead. GOOD FOR: Those who aren’t claustrophobic.

★★★★★ Saffa writer JM Coetzee’s brilliant book gets a halfdecent big screen treatment, courtesy of Australian director Steve Jacobs. John Malkovich puts in a powerful performance as the Cape Town professor who has to face up to changes in South Africa, but the actor is let down by plodding direction. ★★★★★ A cash-strapped couple (Cameron Diaz and James Marsden) are given a box with a button that, when pushed, earns them a million but kills someone they don’t know. The film is let down by pedestrian pacing within highconcept drama. It starts well but soon collapses under the weight of its own weirdness. GOOD FOR: A ‘would you?’ pub conversation. PDV

Kiwi actor Temuera Morrison says he’s happy he gets to play a Maori in his latest movie Tracker. Known for his role as Jango Fett in the Star Wars films, Morrison plays a man on the run after he is accused of murdering a British soldier. “I’ve been a Pakistani and someone from outer space so it’s good to get back to my gritty character,” Morrison told the Southland Times. The film, which is set in 1903 and also stars British actor Ray Winstone, is being shot around Queenstown.

Everyone loves a ragsto-riches story. The question is whether this qualifies. From the mock-shock he expressed on her first TV turn, to the label on which this album appears, this isn’t so much Susan Boyle’s record as Simon Cowell’s, and thus less a rags-to-riches tale than a riches-to-more-riches one. At this point, it barely matters what the album sounds like, but for the record, it’s what you might expect: measured

The latest money-grab from the reformed cash cow is a two-disc live set, split between the group’s summer concerts at Wembley and a lower-key session at Abbey Road. As with most live albums, it’s a souvenir aimed at listeners for whom a ticket stub and a T-shirt isn’t enough of a material memory. But with more than a million having seen the summer shows, that’s a lot of souvenirs. And the best news? No Robbie. WFJ
Eagle-eyed listeners will know the name from Gillian Welch’s albums; the two are partners, but Rawlings’ name only ever appears on the back of Welch’s LPs. The situation here is reversed: Welch’s face is on the back cover, with Rawlings’ twitchy tenor taking the lead vocals. Surprises are few but treats are manifold, chiefly the swinging Bells Of Harlem, and a jolly cover of Jesse Fuller’s fable Monkey And The Engineer. WFJ
Melbourne might seem an unlikely place for a doo-wop revival, but local quintet Little Red seem poised to achieve just that, with a reputation for thrillingly fun live shows. As you would expect, their debut is all toe-tapping tunes, dreamy harmonies and lets-holdhands naiveté. But the cutsie, jaunty “she’s so fine, she blows my mind” shtick wears thin pretty quickly. LIVE REVIEW The Specials Hammersmith Apollo Nov 24 ★★★★★ The predominance of middle-aged men wearing trilbies and Doc Martens in the pubs surrounding the venue are a sign that The Specials are back in town. The ska legends, who are nearing the end of their 30th anniversary tour, don’t disappoint. Livewire Neville Staple and more subdued Terry Hall make a great vocal tag team on classics such as Monkey Man. Among them is a slightly overbearing cover of The Rolling Stones’ Wild Horses, a wholly unnecessary Cry Me A River, and three blandly devotional hymns, all of which find Boyle accompanied first by echoey, almost Enya-esque atmospherics, and then by the obligatory, roof-raising, talent-show choir. In the late ’60s he was simply Vincent Damon Furnier, hell-bent on shocking middle America with his cross-dressing ways and “chicken incidents”. Q&A WITH ANDY WHITBY The hard house star chats to us ahead of his AWsum gig in London. Tell us about AWsum. AWsum is put on by someone who’s still a clubber at heart. I’ve been on dance floors and wanted to hear certain tunes and for the night to progress a certain way. I’m bringing this experience to my events. Hard house parties in London seem to be few and far between these days. Why? Dance music goes in a loop and now house and electro are the sounds we’re hearing. Lisa Lashes or Anne Savage? If I had to choose, it would be Anne. We’ve been on a lot of tours together and she’s given me good advice.
McDonald’s or Burger King? There’s something about the McDonald’s Big Tasty with bacon that gets me going.

Icebergs floating to New Zealand Ships in the south Pacific Ocean were alerted that groups of icebergs believed to have split off Antarctic ice shelves were drifting north toward New Zealand. The alert came three years after cold weather and favourable ocean currents saw dozens of icebergs float close to New Zealand’s southern shores for the first time in 75 years. Gary Lineker What’s his story? He’s just about turned into the male face of BBC Sport, but before that he was a morethan-handy footballer. By English standards? Actually, by everyone’s standards. He won the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
He played 80 games for England and also played for Leicester, Everton, Barcelona and Tottenham. What position did he play? He was a striker who scored 48 goals for England. He seems like a good bloke on TV? So would you if you had multimillion pound contracts with the BBC and Walkers crisps.

New Zealand saved their best for last as they punctuated their unbeaten tour of the northern hemisphere with a comprehensive 39-12 win over France in Marseille. The All Blacks, having already seen off Wales (19-12), Italy (20-6) and England (19-6) without really hitting second gear, showed a willingness to run the ball against the French. In return, their sure-handedness in the offload and ability to turn the slightest mistake by the French into an attacking opportunity made for some breath-taking rugby that resulted in five tries. The visitors overcame a nervous opening
10 minutes to score five-pointers through Sitiveni Sivivatu, Mils Muliaina, Jerome Kaino, Cory Jane and Conrad Smith, with the exceptional Dan Carter booting an additional 14 points. France, who had sprung a 20-13 win over South Africa the week before, responded with three Julien Dupuy penalties and a Francois Trinh-Duc drop-goal. Dupuy opened the scoring from 35m after three minutes, but the All Blacks came firing back, Yannick Jauzion hauling down Ma’a Nonu within striking distance of the French line before Sivivatu skipped through the threadbare defence. Carter converted and was then on hand to produce a potential try-saving tackle on Fabien Barcella after Jauzion had exploited a huge hole.

Strong team for Barbarians Some of rugby union’s best players will line up in Saturday’s Barbarian’s match against New Zealand at Twickenham. The Wallabies Matt Giteau and Rocky Elsom and Springboks Bryan Habana, Fourie du Preez and Victor Matfield, have been included in the Barbarians’ 22-man squad. Joining them will be Wales and Lions players Jamie Roberts, Leigh Halfpenny and Andy Powell while adding spice to the occasion will be the out-offavour All Black Joe Rokocoko. While the All Blacks squad had not been anounced, captain Richie McCaw said his team would not be in holiday mode until after the weekend. Tickets for the match are still available and cost from £35 at ticketmaster.co.uk.

The Wallabies broke a 101-year hoodoo with a morale-boosting 31-3 victory over the Cardiff Blues in their tour match last week. In one of the more bizarre records in sport, the Wallabies had lost all six previous encounters with Cardiff, dating back to their first meeting in 1908. But the Wallabies ended the century-long drought with a good win. Fullback James O’Connor, dual try-scorer Kurtley Beale, who was playing out of position on the left wing, flanker Matt Hodgson and crash-tackling hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau were the standouts for the tourists.
Wallabies great Joe Roff likened Australia’s current plight to that of the woes he and his teammates experienced in 1997 before they turned it around in time to win the World Cup. Roff, who played 86 Tests from 1996 to 2004, said the Wallabies’ shock loss to Scotland reminded him of the difficult period Australia endured in 1997. But he was confident the Wallabies still had the time and the personnel to turn things around before the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand. “Two years out from the [1999] World Cup we lost to Argentina and we were flogged by New Zealand,” Roff said. “This team is two years out from the World Cup and they’ve lost to Scotland and they’re in a very similar position. “But the quality of the players are there and some of the younger guys have been given Test experience on this tour and they will benefit from that hugely.”

The Wallabies ended their autumn tour in spectacular fashion with a commanding 33-12 victory over Wales in Cardiff. Stung by a sobering loss to Scotland at Murrayfield, the Wallabies rebounded with their biggest win over Wales since 1996. In an utterly dominant performance, the Australians ran in four unanswered tries to silence the 74,339-strong crowd at Millennium Stadium. The Wallabies had stars all over the park,
none more so than dynamic halfback Will Genia and inspirational captain Rocky Elsom, who both produced mighty performances. Matt Giteau delivered a masterclass from flyhalf, putting the Murrayfield disappointment behind him to terrorise the Welsh, who badly missed injured captain Ryan Jones and then lost 2008 world player of the year Shane Williams in the fifth minute with a hamstring tear. The awesome Australian forward pack was the cornerstone of the Wallabies’ success, with the scrum smashing Wales and Benn Robinson and Ben Alexander outstanding in the loose.

Windies crumble Still hurting over their Ashes defeat, Australia vented their frustration by beating up the hapless West Indies in the first Test in Brisbane within three days.
The wilting Windies lost 15 wickets in all on Saturday to lose by an innings and 65 runs, as Australia rumbled to their sixth-straight win at the Gabba dating back to 2004. It extended their 21-year
unbeaten run at the ground in Tests. At least West Indies debutant Adrian Barath, 19, could hold his head high after becoming the youngest West Indian to score a Test century on debut. But when he fell for a magnificent 104 in the final session on Saturday, the end was nigh for the tourists. Man of the match Ben
Hilfenhaus (3-20), spinner Nathan Hauritz (2-40) and Shane Watson (2-44) helped bowl out the Windies for 187 in their second dig after Ricky Ponting enforced a surprise follow-on earlier on Saturday. As he did in the first innings Hilfenhaus tore the heart out of the top order.

Umpire referrals prove successful Breathe easy, traditionalists – the benefit of the doubt remains alive and well in Test cricket despite the introduction of technology. That was the verdict after the new umpire review system was used during the first Test between Australia and the West Indies in Brisbane. Fears that whizbang gadgets could take over the game were allayed when Australian skipper Ricky Ponting dodged a bullet after a confident LBW shout and Test opener Shane Watson “walked” despite a 50-50 LBW call. While the spotlight may have shone on the new
technology at the umpires’ disposal, the opening morning action showed grey areas still existed in Test cricket. The new system looked like it would be activated in just the third over of the match when Watson shouldered arms and was given out LBW to Jerome Taylor for a duck. The ball appeared to have hit Watson high but the opener opted not to question it, albeit begrudgingly. The West Indies had little success with the technology with Chris Gayle unsuccessfully challenging his dismissal in both innings when he was plumb LBW.

The Umpire Decision Review System will be used next month in the Test series between South Africa and England. The use of the system was said to be in doubt because of the reluctance of Cricket South Africa to help fund the technology. England was the only ICC member to vote against the introduction of the technology.

Playing his first Test for two years, Bond eventually overshadowed the exploits of the 19-year-old whose batting almost stole victory in a cracking Test. Set a victory target of 251 in 91 overs, Pakistan were dismissed for 218 as New Zealand grabbed the early initiative in a three-match series which resumes in Wellington on Thursday. De Villiers, given the responsibility of filling the number three batting slot, hit 121 off only 85 balls as South Africa piled up 6-354, a record total in matches between the two countries. Paul Collingwood hit a defiant 86 for England but the tourists were bowled out for 242 in reply. It was South Africa’s first win in eight matches against England, after six defeats and one no-result, and levelled the current series with two matches to play. Gibbs back in SA squad Herschelle Gibbs was recalled as cover for injured all-rounder Jacques Kallis for the remainder of South Africa’s limited-overs international series against England. Kallis was expected to be sidelined for a month with a rib injury. Gibbs did not play in South Africa’s win over England at Cape Town. Gibbs, who belted a record six sixes in one over against the Netherlands at the 2007 World Cup, was initially overlooked for this series. He scored 22 in his last ODI, a loss to England in the group stage of the Champions Trophy in September. The absence of Kallis causes problems for the balance of the South African team because he bats high in the order and is used as an extra seamer in the bowling attack. His fielding would also be valuable.

n recent times, few athletes have taken their sport by storm as emphatically as Australian surfer Stephanie Gilmore. In 2007, her first full season on the ASP World Tour, Gilmore, then 19, took out the world championship. In 2008, she stormed away from the pack by winning the final three events of the year to go back-to-back. And now, with a hat-trick beckoning, she’s top of the championship standings, as the season reaches its climax in Hawaii. “I definitely get nervous, but I try to keep things pretty simple,” she says. “It really just comes to me naturally when I hear the horn blast. My instincts take over and I hit a whole new focus – it’s all about those two waves in 30 minutes. “The ocean is forever changing – I’m acutely aware of that, and I know that I still have so much room for improvement. Gilmore admits it’s a blessed existence, but alludes to its hidden stresses. “It all looks very glamorous on tropical islands, but there’s so much travel,” she says. “And you’ll rock up to an event and have to sit around for a few days. OUT OF THE BLOCKS The history of sport is pockmarked with supernovas – shooting stars who light up the sky before flaming out ahead of schedule. And certainly, Gilmore’s success has been sudden. ”It’s been a big couple of years. I’ve basically come in and achieved all my goals straight off the bat,” Gilmore says. “From the beginning, I just envisioned myself winning – I never wanted to settle for anything less.” Few athletes can claim to have realised their dreams as quickly as Gilmore. With her mission accomplished, will her drive to succeed wane? “It came very naturally to me – to just go out there and have fun and enjoy it, as well as learning a lot along the way,” she says. “But it only takes losing one heat and I’ll be thinking ‘wow – that really sucks’, and I’ll be desperate to win the next one.” TOUGHER THAN IT LOOKS Life as a professional surfer looks like the winning hand. It seems so relaxed, unlike the lifestyle of competitors in other individual
In surfing there “ are so many things that can go wrong ” on obsessive-compulsive in attention to detail. By contrast, surfers need to go with the flow. “That’s something a lot of surfers fail to do,” Gilmore says. “You have to let go of that aspect. You can make your own luck with smart decisions, but in surfing there are so many variables, so many things you can’t control.”
THREE IN A ROW? While she leads the world championship race, Gilmore has not had it all her own way, with Brazil’s Silvana Lima beating her in two consecutive finals earlier in the year. Gilmore is still on top, by virtue of her win at the start of the year on the Gold Coast, but a showdown with Lima looms. “I haven’t started as well before, so it’s a new situation. I’ve got a lot of confidence in my own ability, but the other girls are right there,” Gilmore says. Defending champions are meant to feel the pressure of previous success. It’s meant to be a millstone that weights them down. Not so for Gilmore. “There’s always pressure on the top five, and the defending champion,” she says, “but I like that extra pressure. It just pushes me along.”
NEWS & SPORT
AS IT STANDS
The record books show Aussie surfers have won 45 world championships, behind only the US, which has 49 wins. On the women’s side, Australians have dominated, sharing 15 of the past 20 titles, thanks mostly to Layne Beachley (below), who won six in a row and seven overall. On the men’s tour, it’s been tougher, with Mark Occhilupo and Mick Fanning the only Aussies to break the American supremacy since 1992. But the world title seems set to be taken out by an Aussie bloke this year, with Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson neck-and-neck with one event remaining. Gilmore’s explanation of Australians’ surfing success is straightforward. “There definitely seems to be something in the water with Aussies, and we have a different approach,” she says. “All the surfers love what they do, but Aussies just love being at the beach, and just love sport – the fame or money doesn’t seem to come into it.”

mployment rates in New Zealand continue to plummet, indicating the country is in for a tough 2010. The employment figure for September was 40,000 lower than a year earlier, and most of the jobs that have been shed were in the export processing, construction and manufacturing sectors. Economist Ganesh Nana says it is worrying there is no growth in those industries
as they should be at the forefront of New Zealand’s economic recovery. “It suggests the recovery, if it comes, is going to be a relatively long, slow, hard grind rather than anything spectacular,” he says.

DOUBT ON GREEN JOBS
Workers in Australian call centres face high levels of stress, a new survey shows. Factors include unrealistic performance targets, abuse from customers, high call volumes and concern their jobs would go to overseas workers.
The Australian opposition claims the Rudd Government’s Green Jobs Corps, which was created in July to ease youth unemployment and help the environment, could be used to spin jobless figures and may do little to create new work.

support Care work is a great way to earn money while at the same time making a difference to someone’s life WORDS ELIZABETH EUN IS IT FOR ME? Peter Henry, of Origin, tells you what you need to know about care work. What kind of people is care work suited to? Care work is for friendly, easy going, but responsible, bright, independent people. Do carers get time off? It ranges from minimum wage to good rates, plus food and accommodation costs are included.

lexible hours, good pay and the chance to make a positive difference to someone’s life. A job as a care worker can deliver much more than expected.
THE WORK Carers provide day-to-day support so clients can live independently, rather than in a communal home, says Peter Henry, owner and manager of care company Origin. One of the benefits of working as a carer is that each job is different because each client is different. Tasks include shopping, housework, cooking meals, personal care and driving. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? A carer’s job is to give necessary support to their client so they can lead an independent lifestyle. “Good quality care support can mean the difference between being able to live in your own home, have a job, enjoy sports and a social life or being confined to a residential home of some kind,” Henry says. The feeling of helping
someone achieve their independence gives carers the greatest job satisfaction.
LIVE IN, LIVE OUT Live-in carework typically means that you live in the home of the person you will be caring for. Live-out care work is usually undertaken with a residential home, where teams of care workers support the home’s residents in a more structured setting. WHO NEEDS CARE? Elderly people and people with mental and/or physical disabilities, need care. Some care agencies specialise in particular fields. For example, Origin specialises in care services for people with spinal injuries. TRAINING AND SKILLS While some care agencies may ask for care work qualifications, most welcome people with no previous experience or qualifications. Origin provide a free four-day training
Athena van der Merwe, 23, originally from Cape Town, has been in the UK since July 2008. She lives with a care patient outside of London. What does your job entail? I pretty much have to do everything the person can’t do for themselves, so that’s dressing, cooking, cleaning, and taking them places. Do you enjoy your job? I really do. Before I became permanent with my current client, I worked all over the UK. My client sails, and so I’ve been with him sailing and to events. My other clients did things such as wheelchair rugby, or went on holiday, so I’ve seen many places and met lots of cool people. It’s a very feel-good job because you know that what you’re doing is making a person’s life as normal as possible. What are your future plans? I’m leaving in December to go back home to study medicine. This [job] has motivated me to do it – I’ve always wanted to [be a doctor], but it’s pushed me a bit further to achieve it.
course to all its care workers, while most of the better care agencies provide some free training, as well as the opportunity for further formal training, which can lead to gaining some qualifications. “In most cases, no experience is necessary,” Henry says. “At Origin we have carers who have been scuba instructors, holiday reps, hotel managers, teachers, physiotherapists, care workers, secretaries and butchers – plus just about every other job too.”

Pubs serving food are increasing their market share, as the consumer trend of visiting pubs to eat as well as drink continues. According to a report by market analyst Key Note, food-led pubs now represent 35.2 per cent of the restaurant meals market, which it valued at £13.1bn in 2009.
Aussie consumers continue to avoid racking up debt on credit cards – a habit learnt from the financial crisis – and instead are using cash from their growing weekly wage packet. New data show the annual average wage is now $62,431, up 5.2 per cent in the 12 months to August.
How do you budget?
I try not to have too many nights out during the week, sometimes unsuccessfully. And I usually find a way to spend all my money on the weekends, anyway. What do you blow your cash on?

Christmas is just around the corner, but instead of blowing a heap of cash on gifts at department stores, think outside the square to save some money. No one is suggesting you only give home-made gifts, but it’s worth hitting the Christmas markets in London. The Cologne Christmas Market on South Bank and All I Want For Xmas in Brick Lane offer a range of ideas. Weekend markets on Golborne and Portobello Roads are great for knickknacks. Camden markets are best if you want something edgier, and browse your local Farmers Market (lfm.org.uk) for tasty treats.

My family and I are in the last six months of my four-year ancestry visa and we need to apply for a one-year extension. This seems straight forward for my wife and two children who are under 18, but my oldest son has since turned 18 and is at university. His current visa is linked to my ancestry visa as an accompanied to parent. He is still fully dependent on us. Will he fill in the same form as the rest of my family or will he be treated independently?

You are correct in the assumption that your spouse and children under the age of 18 can be included on your application

The application for your eldest child will still be considered as dependency on your ancestry visa. You will need to demonstrate that he is completely financially reliant on you and that he is not leading an independent life.

The UK tax year begins on April 6, and if you work only part of the tax year you should get some tax back. The tax threshold is £6475 per year – so if you earn less than this you won’t pay any tax. You’ll need a P45 (when you leave a job) and a P60 (at the end of the tax year). No wonder, as this strategic and stunning island lies in a pivotal position between Europe and Africa, and also boasts beaches as good as you will find on either continent. This strong sense of Corsican identity and spirit is most evident in the old hill town of Corte. Here sits the island’s university, which was originally opened thanks to the stirring efforts of Pasquale Paoli, one of the great Corsican heroes. Today his legacy helps keep the language and culture alive for young Corsicans. Corte is also home to the Museum of Corsica, which showcases Corsican culture and the struggle to preserve its identity as part of France. In recent decades the desire among some more extreme Corsicans for independence has led to bloodshed, but this museum focuses on the positives of Corsican culture rather than the independence struggle. Bonifacio, perhaps the most beguiling of all the Corsican towns and cities, lies further south. It enjoys a spectacular setting atop vaulting limestone cliffs, which adds to the drama of the tales of bloody battles that ripple through its history. The winding streets of the old town ramble over the crags in a warren of stone streets while the Mediterranean surges far below. Bonifacio’s restaurants are among the best on the island. BEST BEACHES ■ Rondinara: Voted France’s finest beach, the crescent swirl of white sand sweeps around shallow balmy waters. ■ Calvi: this northern beach is well set up for tourism with loads of water sports, sun loungers and the like. ■ Cupabia: A bijou contender with golden sand and crystal clear waters. The effort of getting to this remote hideaway is worth it. ■ Petit Sperone beach: Just outside Bonifacio this gorgeous inlet lies apart from the town’s bigger beaches. ■ Lavezzi Isles: Another southern gem just off the coast of Bonifacio, these isles are home to a sprinkling of unspoilt beaches.

French. Traditional hearty cooking from the interior is also popular, a rustic style bursting with flavours almost in defiance of the delicate sauces and intricate styles of mainland France. The wines too stand apart, alive with minerals blown in from the sea. While the past is never far away in Corsica the locals could not be accused of failing to enjoy life in the present. Their island boasts some of Europe’s finest beaches, swathes of unspoilt countryside and a mild Mediterranean climate. The pace of life is measurably slower than on the mainland, something most visitors appreciate as they ‘slip back into Corsican time’ – as one Australian visitor I met in Bonifacio put it. Throw in some of the most challenging hiking in Europe on the island’s spiny bone of mountains and surfing off its coast, and it is a compelling mix. Staring out over the mountains and beaches it is easy to see why the Corsicans are fiercely proud of their ‘most beautiful isle’. Go shopping in Calvi
WHEN TO GO Corsica is a year-round Mediterranean destination, but there are fewer crowds in winter. GETTING THERE EasyJet and Ryanair both fly to Corsica. TNT Weekender St Petersburg RUSSIA
St Petersburg seduces you with its old European charm and penchant for hedonistic partying. Dubbed ‘the Venice of the north’, this pastelpainted city is best seen on foot or by boat from its network of canals.
HEADLINE ATTRACTION As it’s packed with one of the world’s best collections of art, you’ll spend hours wandering the Hermitage, which includes the Winter Palace and cavernous Palace Square. There are works dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, including some by Leonardo da Vinci, but the highlight of the museum is the large number of Picasso paintings in the modern art sections.
BEST OF THE REST Nevsky Prospekt, the main street that stretches through the centre of the city, takes a while to traverse, but there’s plenty to see along the way. The 4.5km strip of shops and history has been the social hub of St Petersburg since the 18th century. Take time to admire the Stroganov Palace
in between browsing the shops on the busy road.
CHOW DOWN Traditional Russian dishes include beef stroganoff, beetroot soup and lots of potato. The restaurants dotted along Nevsky Prospekt are mainly fast-food options, so try ducking down some of the back streets to sample some authentic cuisine.
of the cathedral is the famous Mariinskiy Theatre – treat yourself to a night of opera or ballet.
TRY THE LOCAL TIPPLE Vodka, vodka, and more vodka – you have to try a drop of the stuff while you’re in St Petersburg. Be warned it’s usually served as a shot, and asking for a soft drink or juice to dilute it might raise a few bartenders’ eyebrows.
OUT OF TOWN
GET THE CAMERA OUT The coloured domes of the Church on Spilled Blood are instantly recognisable. It was built as a memorial to Tsar Alexander II, on the site of his assassination in 1881, hence the gruesome name. Inside are stunning colourful mosaics. Another church to visit is St Isaac’s Cathedral, the largest church in Russia. Climb up the 300 steps to the colonnade for a great view of the city. South
In Pushkin, about 25km south of St Petersburg, is Catherine’s Palace, the summer residence of the Russian tsars. The palace was extensively damaged by the Nazis during World War II, but has now been restored. You need to join a tour to see it: a bit of a problem because they’re all in Russian, unless arranged. But you can drop to the back of the group and explore the palace yourself.
NEED TO KNOW WHEN TO GO The city looks beautiful with the frost and blue skies of winter. GETTING THERE The main international airport for St Petersburg is Pulkovo 2. There are several buses you can take to the city centre. Taxis will set you back a bit, so make sure you agree on the fare before you get in. VISAS All those without a Russian passport need a visa in advance. CURRENCY Rubles (RUB). 1 GBP = 47.80 RUB. LANGUAGE Russian. GETTING AROUND The metro is efficient, good value, and colour-coded like the Tube. GOING OUT A pint costs about 90 RUB. ACCOMMODATION A dorm bed is about 500 RUB, hotel rooms are about 3500 RUB.

– the first four Star Wars epics and three of the Indiana Jones expeditions – were all shot in Hertfordshire at Elstree Studios (apart from the scenes both movie franchises filmed in Tunisia). And if that’s not enough, it was here that Shakespeare fell in love, Private Ryan was saved, Cliff Richard went on a summer holiday and a host of famous actors, such as Hugh Grant, found love actually at Christmas. Fans of Agatha Christie’s Poirot and Miss Marple might choose to venture to Knebworth House just a stone’s throw up the A1 to witness the scene of many an ITV murder mystery.
THAT FAMOUS FIRST SENTENCE But even without the big screen, Hertfordshire can hold its own as a destination. It was in Hatfield House’s Old Palace that Henry VIII lived with his children, future English monarchs Mary, Edward and Elizabeth. In lavish Knebworth House – built in 1490 – Edward Bulwer-Lytton wrote that famous first sentence of his 1830 novel Paul Clifford: “It was a dark and stormy night.” He also coined the phrase: “The pen is mightier than the sword.” It was Baron Lytton’s literary chum and
FROM RELIGION TO ROMANCE Nearby St Albans is home to splendid Ye Olde Fighting Cocks – the oldest licensed pub in England and a favourite of Inspector Morse – but also has a majestic cathedral. It was here that Rowan Atkinson as Johnny English managed to pull down the pants of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The holy building (above) was a church double for Westminster Abbey, whose authorities wanted nothing of the film on their premises. The latest movie to boast Hertfordshire as a backdrop is Jane Campion’s Bright Star, about the English poet John Keats, which was shot almost entirely in the east of England. The scenes for this romantic drama were filmed on location at the National Trust’s Ashridge Estate, Hunsdon Woodland in East Herts and Bower Heath Woodland in Harpenden. And therein lies the beauty of this filmic county. From space sagas to romantic poets, Hertfordshire sets the scene.
WHEN TO GO You can visit Hertfordshire’s screen locations all year round. See sceneonscreen.co.uk. GETTING THERE St Albans, Hatfield and Elstree are less than a 30-minute train ride from London’s King’s Cross station. There are frequent services every day. HOW TO MAKE YOUR PHOTOS STAND OUT
THEME: USE OF COLOUR Border Crossing, Bolivia/Chile by Vanessa Ballauff, Sydney, Australia For hints and tips on your holiday snaps, email hotshots@tntmagazine.com
TRAVEL
Clever use of colour is a great way to bring the wow factor into your images. There are tomes filled with colour theory, and I’m not suggesting you read these but a little awareness can go a long way. Vanessa’s image shows good use of cold/warm contrast, contrast of hue and contrast of extension.
71
WHY THIS WORKS: 1 Limited colour palette. The bus is the focus with its splashes of green and red. 2 Large, unbroken sky and landscape emphasise the vast empty space. 3 Strong hues and direct light emphasise the contrasts in colour. 4 The streaky clouds add perspective to the image. 5 The bus is low in the frame, making it insignificant against the larger space of the sky.
HOT TIPS: 1 Contrast colour – some colour contrasts have obvious connections. For example, green/red for Christmas. Colour contrasts tend to be bold, especially with bright primaries red, blue and yellow, but less obvious ones can be more subtle, such as pink/pale green for romance. 2 Contrast of light – the ultimate is black/white, but lots of impact can be gained
from an image of just dark and light blues, or pale and deep purples. Juxtaposing subjects works well for light/ dark contrasts. For example, a pale baby’s finger reaching for a well-tanned adult hand. 3 Contrast of cold/warm – cold colours are greens, greys and blues, while the warm brigade is reds, oranges and yellows. Using from one
side or contrasting the two will alter the mood of your shot. Light is warmer in the evenings and mornings. 4 Contrast of intensity – if there is dominating hue in your image, then its intensity is high. Lots of different hues will make a low intensity image. High intensity images tend to have more impact, such as Van Gogh’s Sunflowers.
5 Contrast extension – a single yellow tulip in a field of red ones makes a different statement to a single red tulip in a field of yellow ones. Anyone who has decorated knows the shock of seeing a whole room painted in a colour that seemed ideal as a small patch from the sample pot. Large areas of the same colour have a major effect on your image.

Let’s be like Tsar Nicholas I, who outlined the first railway route between Moscow and St Petersburg by drawing a line between the cities on a map with a ruler. Legend has it a 16km bend near Novgorod is where he drew around his finger by mistake. A direct line from Istanbul to St Petersburg crosses the western edge of the Black Sea, passes near the Moldovan capital of Chisinau and traverses Ukraine and Belarus before arriving at Peter the Great’s Window on the West, about 2000km up the road. With a few tweaks, this route can work. There’s a weekly ferry from Istanbul to Odessa (ukrferry.com), from where you can catch a train as far as Minsk, capital of Belarus. You’ll need to sort your visas out before – see uk.belembassy.org. Onward trains from Minsk to St Petersburg take 11 hours. Get tickets at realrussia.co.uk. But why rush? There are great stops en route, such as Gallipoli, Lviv and Brest. Congratulations for being up to the challenge of taking an unusual route home. Send me a postcard. In fact, if anyone wants to send me a postcard, care of TNT, I’d be delighted.

Buying a car to travel across North America sounds attractive, but it may be more trouble than it’s worth. Purchasing a car is the easy part – you then need to register yourself as the owner of the vehicle and get insurance. Both of which are very difficult if you don’t have a Canadian (or American if doing this in the USA) address. You may have more joy trying to register a vehicle in British Columbia than Ontario and get insurance by providing the address of a hotel or hostel. All this costs several thousand dollars up front for even the cheapest car. Then you have to sell the vehicle at the other end, under time pressure. Offloading a foreign-plated car in LA puts you in a very weak position with their super-slick car sales companies and you are looking at a serious loss of money. You’re better off hiring a car in Canada, dropping it off before crossing the border into the USA, and picking up another hire car for the American leg. In Mexico use buses unless you want to go to particular remote spots.
My partner and I are planning to do the Trans-Siberian railway trip next year. Before going to Russia, we’ll be in Turkey and want to get from Istanbul to St Petersburg without flying. What’s the best route there, with a few interesting stops on the way? Anna, via email

GET YOUR BEER NECESSITIES There’s a lot to consider when deciding where to go on holiday, not least how much a beer costs. To help travellers find out this important detail, travel specialist Round The World Experts has launched a global beerometer on its website, which provides the average cost of a pint of beer in countries across the globe. Whether it’s a knees-up in New Zealand or a Thailand tipple, just enter the country of your chosen session, and instantly see how many pounds you should budget. Using information from the beerometer,
Round The World Experts has also compiled a list of the cheapest beer destinations – in first place is Delhi, where a pint of lager costs only 50p, compared to £4.18 in Dubai. Round The World Experts marketing manager Robyn Simper says: “Knowing how much you are likely to spend in each destination … is an important part of pre-trip planning. “Our beerometer is a simple tool that can help travellers head for the places that offer the best value for money.” See roundtheworldexperts.co.uk.

BIG TRIP
T
BANGKOK, THAILAND By anyone’s standards, south-east Asia is the place to be when it comes to street food, and there’s nowhere better than Bangkok. In this noisy, gridlocked city, sidewalk hawkers jostle into any space to dish up pad Thai, fried bananas, wonton soup or green papaya salad, with no shortage of hungry customers. With so many choices, where does the street food aficionado begin? Do as the locals do and step away from Khao San Road and hop in a taxi, telling the driver to take you to Saochingcha neighbourhood. It’s off the tourist map, but teeming with hungry locals. The packed few blocks is crammed with street food stalls serving up some of the most delicious specialities you’ll find. Head to Gai Yang Boran (474-476 Tanao Rd, Sanchaposue) for Thai-style barbecue chicken with sweet chilli sauce. Niyom Pochana (109 Mahannop Rd, Saochingcha) will satisfy your craving for red pork, while Kao Neoo Korpanich (431-433 Tanao Road, Saochingcha) serves up sticky rice and mango. The stall uses fresh mango, so is open only from June to December, when the plump juicy fruits are in season. For something a bit different, head to Khanom Buang Phraeng Nara, which has been making the old-style royal dish of khanom buang for more than a century. It consists of pankcakes made of three types of flour, eggs and palm sugar, served with sweet or savoury fillings: minced shrimp, fried coconut, sesame seeds or cream.

Go bananas for the street food in Bangkok
TRAVEL
here’s a revolt going on in the world of street food – but that doesn’t mean it’s revolting. Rather, canny vendors in some parts of the world are cleaning up their act, and their stations, while elsewhere the idea of street food has taken hold in places where it’s never been the norm. Street food comes in all forms and caters for all tastes, from fried spiders to carb-stacked burgers. You don’t have to be adventurous to sample streetside fare, just confident and a little choosy.

CAUTION: PROTECT YOUR MONEY! If you claim a tax refund, be sure to use a company bonded by the Association of Tax Agents (ATA). If a company is not bonded by the ATA and goes out of business, you could lose your refund. Also, we recommend you avoid agents who charge unusually low commission rates – three such agents have gone out of business in the last 4 years and clients, like yourself, have lost their money.

Stacey B aka T-Bone: It is
Our Perth brother from another mother … Palm: Well
mate, we’ve had an awesome time with you in London Town! Best permanent dosser ever! Gonna miss your funny laugh, random Superman waking us up, and funny moments in the villa’s shed! What will we do without our walking, talking UBD? It’s not goodbye, it’s just bye for now! Remember where ever you are, keep living the dream! Love your Aussie Trashbags. PS Are you still talking? White beanie girl at The Slug, Fulham on Sun, Nov 22: Sexy
Melbourne girl in Fulham Slug, I chatted to you for a while but can’t remember much, and then you left. Kicking myself that I didn’t ask for your number. Would

Canon camera lost at She Bu Walkabout on Sun, Nov 22. Please return if found! £50 up for grabs as reward! Ask your friends! Think about karma. See tntmagazine.com/seeking. The Coup: Turkey, thanks for a year of fun. Thanks for putting up with my steggleness. Don’t ever lose your portable heater. Looking forward to many more adventures together. Super big meerkat hugs. Kiwi Brian, who was on the train back from the NZ v England game on Sat, Nov 21:
I got on the train at Putney eating a kebab after a day of rugby watching. You were on the way back from the game and we started chatting. You introduced yourself as I got off the train at Clapham Junction,
and I walked away thinking I should have stayed. I know it’s a long shot, but if you happen to be reading this, it would be nice to continue our conversation. Emma. People’s Republic, Clapham, Nov 21: James from Brisbane
living in Wimbledon (or any of his friends who may be reading this). You were with your friends, one of whom was wearing a Spider Pig T-shirt, and I was there with fellow Saffas. Somehow we neglected to exchange details after you paid for my taxi ride home. It would be good to hear from you and I promise I won’t think you are from New Zealand – ha ha. Drop me a line at little.eva@hotmail.co.uk. Not spotted: Seeing as this is my last chance to get in TNT, I thought I’d make a corny attempt at thanking all the amazing people I have met

Q
I’ve recently started seeing a Greek guy, who’s gorgeous and pretty fantastic. The only thing is his English is not that good, and sometimes it’s difficult to communicate. Should I stay in a relationship with someone I can’t talk to properly?

gutting you’re leaving London Town! I think you will find it is not going to be the same at the Reddy without you, and what is going to happen to Zanadu Sunday? I hope for your sake you have your life insurance updated and you got your rabies injection. I’m not going to lie, but now Morrisons lip balm will still be on the shelf for everyone else. Just a few words for you to remember, you need to sort your life out, and friends that care share. Please wait for me … Love A and B Weapon.

that’s not his own, and you still call him “fantastic”. Are you sure you want to nit-pick? OK, so his English isn’t that good and sometimes you may
have awkward silences over dinner or find what he says unintentionally funny, but to be honest, it doesn’t sound like his language skills, or lack

along the way. Thanks for nights out – those remembered and those not so much! Thanks for yummy dinners, coffees and worldly travels. Thanks for every hug, kiss and things too naughty to write here. Thanks for every inspiring and kind word. You all rock! Much luv, Trudy. Oh, if you’re reading this and have just arrived, laugh loudly on the Tube and smile, people love it! Goodbye London. Princess Fiona: Have an awesome birthday! Make sure you have plenty of snakebites at the Reddy – we know you always read this section so we hope this brings a smile to your face. Love you. Gals at Flat 7, Putney. Shan: They say all good things come to an end, but why the best? This year has been unreal. I’m so glad we got a second chance. Do you think we’ll be lucky enough for a third? Hope Canada is everything you hoped it would be. All the best. Goodbye my lover, goodbye my friend. Claire. Lisa, the Aussie (maybe) at She Bu Walkabout on Halloween: You grabbed my
friend’s meat cleaver and said he has a nice beard. You don’t actually live in London but are around every second weekend He thinks you’re dead hot and isn’t really taken. Email meatcleaversrule@live.com. thereof, are shaping up to be a relationship breaker. Actually, your relationship appears to be pretty good. You clearly think he’s an attractive, great guy. I think you need to start remembering that sitting around and chatting about stuff isn’t always the most important aspect of being with someone.
