I have heard that fares for the Tube are going up again in January. The Tube on weekends is a joke – the Jubilee line never seems to fully operate, Warren Street station is always closed, we are lucky if the Circle line is running, and during the week the trains are overcrowded and getting more packed every year. ➥ TNT 1366, NOV 2-8 KEEPING TRACK I’ve been following the letters in TNT regarding the uselessness of the train services in London with great interest. Like Damien of Kentish Town suggested (‘Bad track record’), I kept a list of all the disruptions to my services over a month-long period, then emailed them to the train provider. First of all, they tried to weasel out of it, saying my

The capital’s trains are “ overcrowded and getting more packed every year ” complaint was a day late, so I rang them and pointed out that their trains are always late so that’s a bit rich, coming from them. So they reviewed my complaint and came up with the princely sum of £5 compensation. Five pounds! For a month’s worth of delays and cancellations. It seems like no one is accountable. CALMING INFLUENCE To those TNT readers who may be feeling a little stressed in this current climate, I’m a teacher and my school has just gone through an Ofsted inspection, which is when an organisation scrutinises your school for two consecutive days and tells you how good (or bad) you are. I was extremely stressed out. I didn’t sleep for four consecutive nights and cried a lot. Then I was recommended Rescue Remedy (available in pharmacies). WHY DO IT: Let’s face it, the Chinese are incredible at this kind of stuff. Remember the opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympic Games? They know how to put on a good show. And instead of a ringmaster, they have a Monkey King who runs the whole caper. What’s not to love?

Capital idea: The Serpentine It’s a pleasant time of year for a wander along the banks of Hyde Park’s S-shaped lake. On a drizzle-free morning, there are few better spots to drink a coffee and read the paper. The best place to start is across the road from Lancaster Gate Tube – that entrance brings you straight into the Italian Gardens, a picturesque quadrangle filled with babbling fountains and chalky, moss-covered statues. You might assume it’s too chilly to take a dip this time
of year, but the Serpentine Swimming Club is gearing up for its annual Peter Pan Cup on Christmas Day (only members can participate, though). At the south-east end of the lake, there are plenty of chances to pick up a mulled wine – check out the Winter Wonderland fair or Serpentine Bar and Kitchen – before you pop out in Knightsbridge. TS
There are some great markets that specialise in food, but the one at Somerset House is more focused more on crafts and design. Great for lastminute Christmas shopping.

CIDER The Poms take cider to a new level: the UK has the highest per capita consumption and the world’s largest producer in HP Bulmer. The earliest record of production seems to be in 55BC, when Kentish villages were drinking a bevvy made with apples. Variations range from dry to sweet and cloudy to clear, but there are two main traditions:
the West tradition, with a higher percentage of ciderapples for richer tannins and sharper flavours; and the Kent and East Anglia tradition, with culinary and dessert fruit. Connoisseurs wax lyrical about cider made from 85 per cent (or more) fresh apple juice, but there is a booming market for mass-produced cider such as White Lightning, drunk mostly by chavs and hoodies. LONGPLAYER What is it? A composition of Tibetan gongs and singing bowls, arranged so it will play for 1000 years without the same sequence being repeated. Why is it cool? Housed in London’s sole lighthouse, the composition will only play to completion if technology survives or evolves.

BEAR IN THE SQUARE What is it? A life-sized ice sculpture of a polar bear, carved on December 11, that will melt over 10 days, drawing attention to climate change. Why is it cool? The public can touch the sculpture, causing it to melt, echoing the way humanity affects the balance of nature.

QUANTUM CLOUD What is it? The 30m pile of hollow sections of steel appears utterly chaotic, but if you look closely you can make out the image of a human in the middle of it all. Why is it cool? Antony Gormley, one of the UK’s most prolific public artists, chose this

SEIZURE What is it? Artist Roger Hiorns pumped 75,000 litres of copper sulphate into an abandoned council flat, causing a bright blue crystalline growth on every surface. Why is it cool? Hiorns succeeds in jarring his audience out of their numb urban fug.

ONE FOOT IN THE GROVE What is it? An open-air exhibition of street art, giant sculpture and installations, fully licensed, underneath the Westway road bridge. Why is it cool? British graffiti and street art has serious roots in this neck of the woods, so this show celebrates the genre’s origins, but also what it has become.

THE BEST OF BANKSY What is it? You never know where you will come across a Banksy, identifiable by his distinctive graffiti-stencil design and the deadpan satirical or iconoclastic message. Why is it cool? Beyond the sentiments of the individual Banksy pieces, the identity of the artist adds an extra layer to the intrigue. Banksy remains quasi-anonymous, although he is believed to be 35 years old and from Bristol.

WELL DONE ME: Oscarwinning US actor Morgan Freeman said he felt that he’d done “a good job” portraying Nelson Mandela in a film about the former South African president’s appearance at the 1995 Rugby World Cup. “We did a good job of reinventing and bringing him back,” Freeman told journalists at the premier of Clint Eastwood’s new film Invictus in Johannesburg. The film deals with how Mandela used the 1995 Rugby World Cup to help bring unity to South Africa.

GIBSON BEHIND BARS Hollywood actor and director Mel Gibson is heading back to the lock-up – but this time it’s for professional reasons.
Gibson will clear out a prison to shoot scenes for his second movie in Mexico next year, according to Veracruz governor Fidel Herrera Beltran. Gibson will return to eastern Mexico, where he shot the 2006 movie Apocalypto. It’s been reported that prisoners will be transferred
from the Ignacio Allende prison to other state facilities to make way for filming from January. Construction of a new prison in the area will finish before Gibson arrives. The star has already visited the Allende prison, and he donated US$1 million towards hurricane relief in the Gulf of Mexico region in 2005. Many Mexican prisons are notorious for overcrowding and rioting.

Sam Worthington INTERVIEW JAMES MOTTRAM You used to be a bricklayer. How hard was it getting into acting?
I was never really trying to get into the industry. I was a bricklayer. I wanted to build houses … and I just fell into the industry. I fell into drama school. And then I’ve been fortunate enough to work ever since I got out of drama school at 21. You name it, I did it in Australia. I couldn’t do any more. That was it. I hit the glass ceiling. People were turning me down for jobs, going: ‘I can’t afford him. Why the fuck doesn’t he go to America?’ So it hasn’t been a case of me struggling, but it’s been a case of me keeping on working. How important was Somersault, with Abbie Cornish, to your career?
I started to take things more seriously after that. A lot of the movies I did in my apprenticeship, I saw how you can coast, because you’re in your early twenties. You go out on a bender, and you come in at 6am, and your call time is five past six – and you still do fucking good work. But to me Somersault was ‘Come on, man, let’s buckle down a bit and see what you can get if you work a bit harder and not be an inherently lazy actor like most of them are.’ How was working on James Cameron’s Avatar?

It was 14 months, so it was a megaexperience. Apart from Avatar 2 – if they make it – most movies won’t take that long. Essentially, you’re working in the most rudimentary style with the most advanced technology. Working with Jim, any job after that is easy. After Avatar, Terminator Salvation and Clash Of The Titans to come, how do you feel about being in three of the year’s biggest blockbusters?
I fucking hope I’m in more, to be honest!
But doesn’t that amaze you?
No, I’m fucking excited! I’m not going to be coy here! Fuck that! Fucking A! If I’m coming in and playing with the big boys, I want to do it the right way. They’re offering me blockbusters – fantastic! I watch blockbusters. So I like to do movies that I watch. Why do you think some of the more successful film actors are Australian?
I always look at it that it takes us 15 hours to get to America, and that’s a long time, so we’re not going to waste our time or their time. And we come packed with a bag of experience. To pay the bills in Australia, like any small cottage industry, you have to do theatre, film and TV. You check your ego at the door. You may win an award one week but the next week,
you’re doing a Nescafé commercial, and the next week you’re digging a hole … So that’s what I think it is. We’re armed up with passion and we’re experienced.
I’m not going to “ be coy here! Fuck that! Fucking A! ” Do you feel that you’ll get typecast, though, as the tough guy?
I’m always going to get typecast as what I am – a 33-year-old man who has a soft heart … In a way, I’m trying to choose movies to identify what I’m going through in my life. So in Avatar, it’s about a young kid – a marine, but I played him as a fiveyear-old kid – going to another planet. What are you soft-hearted about?
I’m soft-hearted about a lot of things. I’m a gentle soul. If I tell you, you might hurt it. Terminator Salvation director McG said they had to pull you out of a lot of bar fights during the shoot. Is that true?
No that’s not true! He talks it up! It’s a great story – and I will perpetuate it.

On planet Pandora, a mining corporation is at loggerheads with treehugging natives the Na’vi. To befriend their hosts, a team of scientists develop an ‘avatar’ system, which allows humans, including marine Jake Sully (Worthington), to download their consciousness into bodies that look like the tall, blue locals. When Sully

falls for Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Saldana), it spells trouble. The CGI serves the story pretty well, with the special effects gurus capturing the facial expressions of the actors who portray the native Na’vi. Cameron overplays his hand, though, and the film’s last
30 minutes has too much weird chanting and one too many battle scenes. All-in-all an impressive, if flawed, return for the ‘King of the World’. GOOD FOR: Those who like cutting-edge visuals. PIERRE DE VILLIERS
A Spanish guy looking for his dad and a Belgian woman who’s unlucky in love find out how exciting and frustrating being a backpacker in London can be when they move into the same place in Shoreditch, in Alexis Dos Santos’s vibrant dramedy. The characters are a tad annoying but this will resonate with anyone who has shared a house in the capital. GOOD FOR: Backpackers. PDV

★★★★★ A drunken dare inspires two college buddies (Mark Duplass and Joshua Leonard) to enter a competition and make a gay porn film in Lynn Shelton’s budget comedy. Convincing performances ensure a good build-up, but some interesting themes are left unexplored in a movie that doesn’t live up to the hype on the festival circuit. GOOD FOR: Fans of bromance movies. ize, apparently, does matter, according to Marawa, the Melbourne-born star of stage extravaganza La Clique. And the 27-yearold – who’s one of about a dozen acts in the special Christmas season of the cabaret/circus at London’s Roundhouse – should know. Apart from her sparkly costumes, the London-based Aussie will be wowing the crowd with her cheeky, high-octane hula hooping, in which she shimmies in ways we certainly never did as kids. “It’s really very simple,” chortles Marawa, who has been known to spin up to 102 hoops around her body at one time. “When you were a kid, you were really short and the tiny hula hoops were perfect. Now when you pick up those same hoops and you’re twice the size, you can’t do it. But it’s Mario, Queen of the Circus

The show’s Australian creative producer, Brett Haylock, is devoted to his “tiny show with a big heart”. Describe the show. La Clique was created five years ago and you’d think by now we’d have nailed that sound bite, but it’s still impossible to define. How did the idea develop? It was created as a latenight cabaret alternative for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, in the Famous Speigeltent, which is owned by an Australian. It captured everyone’s imagination and hasn’t stopped for five years.

While the GrohlJones engine room locks into solidity often enough – see the likes of No One Loves Me And Neither Do I and New Fang – there really aren’t many songs here that linger long in the memory. ★★★★★ If Jay-Z occasionally sounds as if he’s on cruise control, that’s nothing compared to the disinterest that exudes from Snoop Dogg, who isn’t so much coasting as asleep at the wheel. Snoop’s basically been making the same record for the better part of 20 years, and Malice N Wonderland doesn’t offer much variation on the same themes (bitches, pimping and weed). The most entertaining thing about Malice N Wonderland may be the jawdroppingly awful cover. WFJ

LIVE REVIEW Alice In Chains Brixton Academy Dec 7 ★★★★★ Back in 2002, after a lengthy hiatus and the death of iconic vocalist Layne Staley, it looked like Alice’s adventures in the grunge metal wonderland were over. But tonight, promoting their first studio album in 14 years, Black Gives Way To Blue, they sound like resident kings. They move effortlessly between the portentous riff epics of their past, the more intense, multi-layered slabs of their present, and a delicate mid-gig acoustic set, as new singer William DuVall’s voice – distinctive, emotive and, thankfully, not karaoke Staley – glides richly above. in the years since it took place. Live At Reading is also different because, unlike most live records, it lives up to its reputation. From the opening blast of Breed to the unlikely encores (two obscure punk covers and the fearsome Territorial Pissings), this is a rock group at the peak of its powers, not necessarily delighted with the global success that’s recently come their way but confident enough to blast their way through the discomfort. PARAMORE
As you’d expect from a band formed of Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones, this trio make a fairly decent racket flecked with elements of their respective bands (Queens Of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters and Led Zep). And as you’d expect, they are pretty amazing live. Catch ’em as they pimp their debut LP this week.
Paramore aren’t just a rock band, they’re a phenomenon. This quintet of God-fearin’, gun-totin’ emo kids from Franklin, Tennessee, have sold four million albums worldwide, and can easily fill cavernous venues like Wembley Arena. Providing songs for the first Twilight film certainly didn’t hurt their popularity either. In town Friday.

VICTORIA A pathological gambler was ordered to pay $1 million back to Melbourne’s Crown Casino after failing in his bid to sue for millions of dollars he lost at the venue. He lost $30 million during a 15-month, $1.5 billion gambling spree in 20052006 and argued the casino preyed on his gambling addictions.

ustralian kidnap victim Nigel Brennan admitted he shouldn’t have risked being in Somalia but said his motives to be there were honourable. The 37-year-old photojournalist arrived back in Australia after spending 15 months in captivity in the east African nation. He and Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout were kidnapped while travelling to a refugee camp near the capital city, Mogadishu, on August 23 last year. They were kept apart from

each other, beaten and tortured until a $600,000 ransom was paid for their release in November. Brennan said he risked his life in Somalia to help raise the profile of the plight of those less fortunate. “In hindsight it was a risk I maybe shouldn’t have taken and I am personally distressed
at the grief and heartache I have caused, but my motives were honourable,” he said. He thanked those who raised the ransom including Dick Smith, who underwrote the ransom, and the Australian Government, which he said deserved credit despite criticisms over its refusal to provide the money.

Swimming Australia boss Kevin Neil vowed there would be no “cover-up” over accusations of sexual abuse against a former head coach and “inappropriate” behaviour by Alan Thompson, his successor. Former Australian swim team coach and manager Terry Buck, who died in a tractor accident in 2005, was accused of abusing a number of elite Australian swimmers. The allegations were made by Greg Rogers who won silver and gold at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Rogers said he and his
brother were abused as youngsters by Buck. He told News Limited that Buck first targeted him as an 11-year-old at Clovelly Surf Club, and the abuse lasted for the next seven years. Police spent five months investigating the allegations after the Sydney Olympic Games, but the case was dropped in early 2001. Buck’s widow slammed the allegations as false. Neil was also forced to announce current head coach Thompson had taken personal leave after being accused of “inappropriate” behaviour.
NEW SOUTH WALES A young mother tried to shelter her baby as a car collided with a truck killing them and three other relatives, including her husband, south of Sydney. The five family members, died instantly with the 23year-old mother being found protectively covering her three-month-old baby.
QUEENSLAND A 70-year-old man celebrating his birthday had a heart attack when he went skydiving on the Gold Coast. The man was on a tandem jump when he lost consciousness after jumping out of the plane.

Botched circumcision A doctor who botched the circumcision of a wriggling four-year-old, severing an artery in the boy’s penis, may face further disciplinary action. The boy needed emergency hospitalisation after the operation, which was performed in January by a general practitioner, assisted by a doctor unqualified to practice in New Zealand, and the doctor’s wife. A report by the Health and Disability Commissioner, recommended the doctor in charge should reconsider his work practices, “giving particular consideration whether he should undertake circumcisions in boys aged older than six months”.

Authorities say air travel still safe The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said contrary to perception, the number of air accidents had decreased year on year in 2009. The CAA was commenting after an Airlink plane overshot the runway at George Airport and came to rest on the road to Herolds Bay. None of the 30 passengers and three crew members aboard were injured. CAA spokesperson, Phindiwe Magwebu, said most accidents reported involved the general aviation sector, including private aircraft. Statistics released by the

CAA showed there were 176 accidents from January to November last year, while the figure for 2009 stood at 108. Airklink was under mounting pressure from authorities after three air safety-related incidents in less than three months. Another Jetstream veered off the runway in Port Elizabeth during take-off last month, but no one was injured.

Titans catch Bird cheaply Controversial star Greg Bird said the opportunity for a fresh start with an NRL club which had shown him compassion influenced him to sign an unusual four-year deal with the Gold Coast.
Bird signed a one-year deal for 2010 with three one-year options. The unusually structured contract would allow the Titans to discard Bird if he were to breach the club’s
strict code of conduct. Bird said he was seeking a fresh start after being cut adrift by Cronulla in January and enduring a stressful court case which had its sequel last month when a conviction of recklessly wounding his girlfriend was quashed on appeal. On Tuesday he was fined $2500 by a magistrate for falsely accusing his friend of the attack.
Ablett talks with Coast Nathan Ablett looms as the wildcard in Gold Coast’s audacious bid to make his brother Gary the marquee player of their AFL debut. The club-in-waiting sent a chill through Geelong after confirmation of their meeting with the Brownlow medallist and two-time premiership player. A turf war is set to erupt in Australian sport with the two biggest football codes unwilling to accept Football Federation Australia’s requirements to host a soccer World Cup.
The FFA is bidding to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022 but to do so it would require exclusive access to 12 of Australia’s largest stadia for up to 10 weeks. But both the AFL and NRL were refusing to step aside completely and claimed they could not run their competitions under the proposals. Left hamstring soreness restricted Siddle to eight overs in the second innings of the second Test in Adelaide, which finished in a draw. The 25-year-old said he
began feeling pain the week before the Adelaide Test but the injury was exacerbated by bowling 25 first innings overs. A scan revealed a strain, as well as bleeding and fluid in the hamstring and quadricep. But Siddle said he had improved steadily since the end of the match and expected to line up on Wednesday. “I think I’m a good chance, you always want to be a good

In the first innings of the first Test at Lord’s, Allan Donald, then 27, gutted England, taking 5-74. On South Africa’s return to the home of cricket – a neat parallel for their return to the international fraternity – Donald’s bowling encapsulated the talent and power of cricket’s prodigal sibling. The Proteas weren’t back to make up the numbers. They were a threat. Now, at the end of 2009, South Africa have
recently surrendered top spot in the rankings to India, but are arguably the best side in the world nonetheless. Teaching has always been my passion – a career in another field has never really been an option for me.
I love the variety of my job, and in particular the exposure to so many differing teaching practices as a supply teacher. I feel like my skills are being developed much quicker than if I were in one school for a long time. It’s also great to only work a maximum of 38 weeks per year – it leaves you with lots time for travel and exploration. What’s the most challenging thing about your job?
The most challenging element of being a supply teacher is constantly having to find the energy to build up a rapport quickly with different students and teaching staff at the new schools I go to.

How can I cope better with the stress of getting all my work done? Feeling overwhelmed at work isn’t much fun and can be bad for your health. A good starting point to tackle the problem can be as easy as prioritising tasks by making lists and then ticking off the completed job. You could also look at all the duties you have taken on

at work, and try to pinpoint the areas where you can enlist the help of others. It’s also extremely important to remember that you shouldn’t have to face the problem alone. If you find you’re continuously struggling with your workload you should be proactive and talk to your line manager, or your recruitment consultant if you’re a temp.
Repats doing it tough A
n Australian research group has declared that white-collar expats returning home – or ‘repats’ – expecting their overseas experience to help them to walk into a new job may in fact be returning to a tight job market. Australia enjoys a low unemployment rate of 5.8 per cent, but a report by IBISWorld claims 10,000 finance, banking and insurance expats have trickled back into Australia from around the world since
the start of the financial crisis in October 2008. That influx has pressurised a local finance market, where the number of jobs fell 4.4 per cent in the year to July, and where the IBISWorld report projects losses of a further 0.8 per cent by June 2010.

At Christmas time, your credit card is probably about to get a hammering, so be smart about how you manage your plastic to avoid a debt hangover that lasts long into the new year. It’s always tempting to only pay the minimum on your credit card each month, but you should find a way to tighten the belt a little further to prevent even more debt accruing through interest. Only once you have resided in the UK with ILR status for the requisite period thereafter (currently 12 months) can you apply for British citizenship.

ravel writer Bill Bryson has seen many a city, but he was so taken by Durham that he lingered long enough to become Chancellor of its university. Less than three hours by train from London, Durham’s winding streets and spectacular cathedral make it a good base for exploring the oft-ignored north-east of England.
A WEALTH OF HISTORY The “Land of the Prince Bishops” was once a
semi-independent state, ruled by powerful church leaders, and Durham is probably best known for the towering cathedral that captures the gaze of passengers arriving on the city’s high rail viaduct. The semi-French names of nearby towns, such as Chester-le-Street, are a reminder that long after the Romans left the area William the Conqueror’s cohorts also managed to push this far north. The cathedral – often cited the best example of Norman architecture in Europe – was one of

A TALE OF TWO CITIES Durham has a Jekyll and Hyde personality: by day it’s genteel with posh students and American tourists en-route to Edinburgh. But the North East used to be a major mining area, and in the reconstructed village and pithead of nearby “living museum” Beamish, visitors can get a feel for the tough industrial past that shaped the locals’ no-nonsense character. This enduring earthiness makes for good pub banter, and at the complex of new bars and restaurants around the Gala Theatre you’ll find plenty of people happy to have “a bit craic-on” with you as they chuck a few down – especially during the office party season. The theatre’s name is a reference to the annual Miners’ Gala, where villagers proudly marched behind the bands and banners that belonged to their local collieries. The first parade was in 1871, and despite the controversial pit closures of the
1980s this gathering still takes place every July. During the world wars many local men were recruited to the Durham Light Infantry. The DLI Museum (durham.gov.uk/dli) tells their story, and also has a small art gallery. Afterwards you can shop for presents in the Victorian market before retiring to the various pubs around Elvet bridge, where the meandering River Wear encircles the cathedral and a castle which is now a university residence. While you may not become a figurehead for Durham, you should catch a glimpse of why Bryson fell in love with this “perfect little city”.

Backgrounds are always there by default but foregrounds need a bit of effort to include in a shot. A good foreground, however, can turn a snapshot into a well-composed image. Stephanie has used these yellow daisies to the point where the foreground is now the subject.

WHY THIS WORKS: 1 Bright yellow flowers make a surprising, stark contrast to the background. 2 A wide-angle lens makes the most of the blooms reaching for the mountains. 3 The flowers take up the entire foreground in the image, making them appear
larger than the mountains. 4 The low viewpoint makes the towering mountains appear as if they are being pushed back by the mass of flowers. 5 The cloudy sky enhances the harsh environment that the flowers have been able to grow in.
HOT TIPS: 1 Foreground subjects are usually insignificant, but they serve a purpose. They lead the eye back to the main subject to hold the viewer’s attention. 2 By getting low, you’re often presented with a suitable foreground subject.
3 If there is nothing in the foreground, pull back and go for a longer lens, or get closer and try a wide-angle lens. 4 Choosing a different angle may present some interesting foregrounds for the shot. 5 Try to include a leading line in the foreground to connect the background.

US-based international travellers’ alliance Ethical Traveler has highlighted countries in the developing world that are best at protecting their natural environment, promoting responsible travel, and building a tourism industry that benefits local communities. AN EARLY START As much as I think I want to sleep in while on holiday, I’m up at 7am every morning. But it’s much easier to rise at this early hour when there’s the promise of a snorkel safari, which means sailing out to the deeper side of the coral reef surrounding the island. The Marine Lab offers snorkel safaris on a complimentary basis every second morning, and local guides who grew up on nearby
It’s the Marine Lab “ that really gets my blood pumping ” islands take guests out to sea. It’s on my first snorkel safari that I hear about the alien plant, and I want to show it who’s boss. Before we jump into the water, Ikraam, one of the local guides, reminds us how important coral is: “The coral reefs around Velavaru Island support a quarter of all the marine life [of the area] and protect the coasts from wave erosion.” This fact is brought vividly to life as soon as I put my head under water. Milk fish, tiger fish, small yellow fish with faces shaped like trumpets; there are so many fish I don’t know where to look first. “It’s like looking into a very full giant fish tank!” exclaims a fellow swimmer. It’s fascinating to just float and stare at all the goings-on under the sea, but we’re here to do a spot of coral gardening, just one of the

reading water as I peer through my snorkel, I’m face to face with public enemy number one as far as coral reefs are concerned. The foe in question is a brown cauliflower-like plant, which is damaging the fragile coral – for which the Maldives is famous – by attaching itself to it and leaching the coral of its nutrients. As enemies go, this is one very bad guy. I fancy myself as a tree-hugger – I recycle all my plastic bags and switch off the lights when I leave rooms. But there comes a time when even the most ardent ecologically aware soul wants a holiday. Finding myself on Velavaru Island, in the South Nilandhe atoll of the Maldives, I realise I haven’t sacrificed my green conscience at all for the sake of a break. I squeal with delight at the sight of the island’s spa and lick my lips looking at the resort’s cocktail menu, but it’s the Marine Lab on Velavaru that really gets my blood pumping with excitement.

Marvel at the coral reef
Dive right in
eco-friendly activities that the Marine Lab offers guests on the island. The coral gardening on our safari takes the form of ‘weeding’ the reefs of this nasty alien plant, and we are itching to find it. We’re instructed to pull the plant off of the coral without causing too much harm to it, and then to swim out away from the reef and drop it. Lying on the seabed away from the coral, it can’t cause any damage. The snorkel safari takes about two hours and by the time we all clamber back on to the boat, a fair size of the reef has been weeded by our green fingers. I realise how effective this is as an eco-tourism activity. The Marine Lab is maintaining the environment and teaching guests all about ecological issues through the snorkel safaris. Coral planting is another activity the Marine Lab occasionally gets guests involved in. During the 1990s, the El Niño weather phenomenon brought such warm tides past the island that a lot of the coral died and the rest was bleached white. After being tested in Indonesia, coral was transplanted in Velavaru, which proved to be so

TURTLE CONSERVATION PROJECTS Velavaru is a key turtle-nesting site and the resident marine biologist at the Marine Lab can tell you about the ongoing turtle conservation projects. You can get involved in monitoring nesting sites and collecting data on the habits of these sea creatures.
VIDEO PRESENTATIONS It might sound a bit like school, but once you’ve been on a snorkel safari, it’s anything but. Twice a week, Velavaru’s resident marine biologist gives a short presentation on the reef fi sh and the origins of coral in the Maldives.

SPOTTING BABY SHARKS The reef not only teems with fish – turtles and sharks regularly hang out here too. The lagoon around Velavaru Island acts as a shark nursery as it’s a calmer and more protected environment than the deep sea. Pregnant black-tipped reef sharks come into the lagoon to give birth, and then return to the ocean. The babies, however, stay in the lagoon, exploring the coral and melting the hearts of all who see them. I spot one in very shallow water and immediately want to adopt it. Velavaru Island means ‘turtle island’, and the Marine Lab is involved in turtle conservation
SCUBA-DIVING The Marine Lab takes guests out scubadiving and offers PADI qualifications. For guests who want to scuba-dive, but don’t want to lug all their gear with them on longhaul flights, the Marine Lab can provide wetsuits and air tanks.

The Marine Lab gives me a much clearer and more intimate idea of the Maldives than just lazing about a five-star resort ever will. I feel a close connection to the aquatic inhabitants of the Maldives and any enemy of coral is now an enemy of mine. Brown cauliflower-like plants, you have been warned!
