For my boyfriend’s Christmas present I got us a city break in Prague, which is a beautiful place to visit. We had a lovely time, but on the day we were due to fly home we received word – not from the airline or the travel agent we’d booked with, but from family in the UK – that Gatwick was closed and our flight had been cancelled. We went to the airport anyway. Our flight wasn’t on the board so we lined up at check-in, only to be told the only available flight for us was five days later, and that if we chose that flight they would put us in a hotel with breakfast and dinner for our stay. We had to be back at work the next day, so after lots of lining up and not being able to get hold of our insurance companies to see if our cover would get us home, we figured we’d make our own way and insurance should cover it. Wrong! Neither the travel agent nor insurance companies

➥ TNT 1376 JAN 11-17 MORE TRAIN WOES Joe, I am also sick of opening my edition of TNT Magazine every Monday morning to read the same thing (‘Shut it over trains’). However, I feel that at times the complaints are actually justified. I have on many occasions publicly sung the praises of public transport here in London. I’m from Sydney,

To suspend a whole “ train line every weekend justifies a huge whinge

would help ‘due to it being adverse weather conditions’. Whilst we had a very scenic route back to the UK via plane, train, bus, ferry and more trains, it has left us about £500 out of pocket. So everyone just keep in mind that while you think it’ll be cheaper and easier to make your own way back under the those conditions it’s not – and people are pretty unhelpful. Happy travels. where in my opinion the trains are deplorable. In London they’re a dream – generally arriving frequently. However, when almost on a daily basis the Overground is delayed and nearly every weekend – for weeks on end – the Jubilee line is down, sometimes in conjunction with the Metropolitan line, you can be stranded. For some, such as the elderly, disabled, partially sighted and people with prams, buses may

not be an appropriate option – and yet there’s no choice. I understand that with a network as large as London’s there is bound to be repairs or upgrades, but to suspend a whole line every weekend justifies a huge whinge. So I’m sorry Joe, but if are you experiencing this every weekend like I am, then I hate to disappoint you but these letters will still appear in TNT Magazine. Rant over! Anthony, West Hampstead

I came to London for Christmas, braving the winter, when I found myself missing my home in Brisbane, Australia. Among the homesickness and culture shock, I reached a period of delusion, dreaming of back home. Then I read ‘Missing London’ (TNT 1373, December 21-27), in which Kimberly Golding wrote about how much she misses London. I identified with her

Members of the mounted Household Cavalry are a familiar sight around The Mall. The cavalry is made up two regiments – the Life Guards and the Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons). The ceremonial mounted unit is stationed at Knightsbridge barracks, but the mounted troops are often to be found around Buckingham Palace where they fulfil state and royal functions.

LONDON TAP JAM AT RONNIE SCOTT’S £6 WHAT: It’s an improvised tap dancing jam, held upstairs at Soho landmark Ronnie Scott’s, set to a soundtrack of live jazz. WHEN: January 24. DO IT BECAUSE: It promises to be an eye-popping spectacle, and who knows – after a few beers, maybe you’ll even pluck up the courage to throw some shapes yourself. There’s a diverse turn-out, with dancers from across the country showing up. Everyone’s welcome, amateur or professional, aged anywhere from 18 to 80 and beyond.

Capital idea: The British Library The notion that libraries are dusty old graveyards striped with cobwebs doesn’t survive very long at the British Library. This is a cutting-edge resource, flooded with natural light. The foyer features several brightly coloured panels illustrating the Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam – a collection of 1000 fourline poems written by an 11th century Iranian astronomer, philosopher and mathematician. It’s an apt introduction

to a building that distils everything the brightest minds have figured out about the world, no matter how esoteric – there’s a whole room devoted to rare books and music and another for maps. The British Library reinforces the idea that, even in a world obsessed with the frivolous, knowledge for its own sake is magnificent. TS

He got his break by appearing on Comedy Idol back in 2005, and his act now consists of trying to solve all the world’s problems with some crudely sketched graphs. Genius.

BRITAIN EXPLAINED CHEESE ROLLING The Poms acquit themselves pretty well when it comes to bizarre traditions, and there’s no finer example of this than their time-honoured cheese rolling ritual. The largest and most famous cheese rolling event takes place in May at Cooper’s Hill in the Cotswolds. A double Gloucester cheese is rolled from the top of

the hill, which is ridiculously steep, and competitors chase after it. Rarely does anyone manage to catch the cheese, which reaches speeds of up to 70mph. The tradition dates back at least 200 years, and there’s speculation that it may once have been a pagan healing ritual, which seems a bit of a stretch. TS

Housed in the Natural History Museum, the Darwin Centre was opened to the public last year. It contains millions of biological specimens. Why is it cool? While it’s a state-ofthe-art museum, it’s also a site of ongoing experimentation and discovery. You’ll observe scientists at work – mapping the effects of climate change or unlocking the mysteries of DNA.

The Prime Meridian, the basis for longitudinal measures and the international dateline, runs through the building, hence the expression Greenwich Mean Time. Why is it cool? BEHIND THE BAR Extensive wine list and wide variety of lagers and bottled beers. The Volunteer also promotes real ale, and offers several guest beers on draught. BILL PLEASE Not bad for the

location – just shy of £25 for a meal and drink for two. VERDICT I want to like this pub – it’s got everything that appeals: comfy sofas, good food, reasonable prices and a lively buzz. But the night we went, it was too loud to hold a conversation and our food took 35 minutes to arrive. Perhaps I’m just getting old. CLAIRE GOODALL

Oh no, please don’t. There were many of them, right. And Stuart [Manning] and Gino said we’d get one for dinner cos we were starving. Me and Lucy [Benjamin] were like ‘Please kill it humanely.’ You became a Page 3 girl at the age of 16. Were you mature enough?

At the age of seven I was going to stage school … I had my first band at 15 so I was edging towards that life anyway. There are a few kids out there who probably couldn’t have handled it but I was ready for it. I was the youngest ever Page 3 Girl and given a four-year contract. It was the first time that had ever happened, so I felt very privileged, very secure.

Were you involved in Ratgate?

I was there … I got the ribcage. I thought, ‘Hang on a minute, there’s no meat on this’. I was like ‘Is that it?’ It tasted like chicken or rabbit. Gino [D’Acampo] made me feel better when he said they’re not like the rats in London, they don’t rummage around in faeces … They were quite

YOU DON’T SAY? Vegemite or Marmite? Ooh, gawd, none of them! What song would you want played at your funeral? Time To Say Goodbye by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli. We had it at my nan’s [funeral], it was beautiful. Tell us your guilty pleasure. Haribos. I’m not a chocolate girl but love sweeties and chews.

You were a sex symbol to millions of blokes but secretly you knew you were gay – did you feel like a fraud?

I didn’t know I was gay at an early age. I was very inquisitive, you know? I don’t believe in labels, I believe in love and attraction. I never knew what I was until I met Myra [Stratton, Fox’s manager and fiancée]. But I knew I was attracted to women. My first crush was The Bionic Woman Lindsay Wagner and I loved Julie Andrews in The Sound Of Music. Touch Me went to No.1 in Oz. Were you blown away by the success of the song?

I just knew when I heard it. I remember Madonna came out with Like A Virgin and the record company had read that I loved to sing. They auditioned me for Touch Me – there were 200 girls there. I learnt it for two weeks and envisaged myself as Madonna, giving it my all. You were huge in India too.

We went there with a band. They drove us onto Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium and we were like, ‘What we doing here?’ We played for three nights to 70,000 people and had to borrow extra PA equipment from Jethro Tull who were there the night before. I did a Bollywood film not long after … and sang Touch Me in Hindi … And then I got an award from Mother Teresa! I went to a Catholic school and every weekend I’d put money in the hat for Mother Teresa. Next thing I know, I’m getting an award from her for being the Most Influential Woman, amazing!

Australian director Scott Hicks returns to the silver screen with The Boys Are Back WORDS JAMES MOTTRAM

I

t’s been 14 years since director Scott Hicks (above) burst on to the scene with Shine. His 1996 Oscar-nominated tale of pianist David Helfgott captured public imagination like few other films that – or any – year. Inevitably Hollywood came calling, but the resulting films – Snow Falling on Cedars, Hearts In Atlantis and No Reservations – never came close to making the same impact. So perhaps it’s no

coincidence that his latest film, which sees him return to film in Australia with the aptly titled The Boys Are Back, is his best film since Shine. In truth, Hicks never went away. Born in Uganda and raised in Kenya and England, he has lived in Adelaide for most of his life and doesn’t own a house in the US. “I’m a traveller,” he says, in his softly spoken voice, when we meet in a Soho hotel. “I guess in

the past 12 years I’ve spent four or more years off shore. I lived in New York for a year, doing No Reservations. The point is, if I moved, I never would’ve been at home anyway, as none of the films I’ve done in America were shot in LA.”

IN HIS OWN BACKYARD Even so, Hicks admits he was “hesitant” about making his first film on home turf since Shine. “I wasn’t sure how it would work out – whether my filmmaking methods and style would fit in the local filmmaking scene,” he says. It can’t have hurt that the film was shot in and around his own backyard – “literally” in the case of one scene, which was “shot from the balcony of my beach house”. Based on the autobiographical book The Boys Are Back In Town by UK journalist Simon Carr, the film follows an Adelaide-based English sport writer, Joe Warr (Clive Owen), who is forced to look after his six-year-old son Artie (Nicholas McAnulty) after his wife dies of cancer. Making his life yet more complicated is Warr’s estranged teenage son Harry (George MacKay), from his first marriage, who decides to come and stay for the summer – leaving him at breaking point. IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER Now 56, his long hair twinkling with grey, Hicks says he responded immediately to the screenplay’s theme of fatherhood – though stresses his own domestic situation, with his

producer-wife Kerry Heysen, is very different. “I’ve been a father since I was 18. I became an instant father to a four-year-old [Scott]. My wife’s first husband had died very young, and I took on the role of a stepfather – looking after him, cooking, cleaning, all that stuff. I am his dad, and I have been for 38 years.” Hicks concedes it was “unusual” to become a father at such a young age. “It’s just what happened, and I took it up and stayed with it,” he says. “It was odd. I was still an adolescent really. But I just adored the kid.” Hicks did not become a father again for another 12 years, when his wife gave birth to their second son, Jethro. Despite the 16-year age gap, Hicks maintains the brothers are “actually very close”. While this history differs from the script for The Boys Are Back, Hicks stresses the resonance of the story. “You can’t help but hear the echo of things that you’ve experienced.”

SHINING ON The film features a moving performance from Clive Owen, far removed from his usual tough guy persona. But Hicks is reluctant to suggest that his star might follow Shine’s Geoffrey Rush and scoop a Best Actor Oscar. “I let other people talk about that because anything I say never works! I think Clive’s performance is well worthy of attention. But it takes so many different planets to align for that to be a possibility, it’s better not thought about.” So what does he wish for? “The most important attention is from the audience,” he says.

» The Boys Are Back opens in the UK on January 22

Q: What made you want to do The Boys Are Back? A: It was about parenting and the inadequacies of this guy, trying to make it work. It was funny and charming but also terribly touching and sad, and it wasn’t sentimental. I just felt – because I’m a parent and I’ve got two girls – I wanted to explore that area. Q: Do you think it’s a very unusual role for you? A: It’s unlike anything else I’ve done. A lot of the film is me and a seven-year-old. Q: Your family stayed with you for some of the shoot. Did you all get a chance to explore Australia? A: We had a fantastic time on Kangaroo Island. Very unspoilt. It was really lovely. It’s some of the most beautiful countryside I’ve ever seen in my life.

As the late, great British comic Peter Cook once famously said of David Frost, OneRepublic have risen without trace. The group sold two million copies of their debut album, racking up unavoidable top-five UK singles in the process. Speaking of dodgy lyrics, here come Lostprophets, surely the only heavy metal act from Pontypridd to have twice reached number 33 in the American album charts. Despite the rotten words, the group are on solid form when they keep things aggressive, as on Dstryr And Dstryr. The softer tracks are less successful: For He’s A Jolly Good Felon and Streets Of Nowhere are the sound of a band who heard Hard-Fi and liked them a little too much for their own good. WFJ

In case you missed our interview with him last week James Milne aka Lawrence Arabia is an erstwhile member of The Brunettes, The Ruby Suns and The Reduction Agents, who didn’t write the score for Eagle Vs Shark. His shtick on latest LP Chant Darling is to marry a wry sense of humour to delicious harmonies, dreamy ’60s guitar pop with much success on tunes such as the joyous Apple Pie Bed, and Tiki-flavoured Auckland CBD Part 2. Chapman is one of those Nashville singersongwriters whose earnest sincerity and well-practised professionalism don’t always fare well on these cynical shores. Six of the 11 tracks on Back To Love have ‘love’ in the title; the others have names such as Happiness, Shadows and Peace. It’s a relief then, to find Chapman’s melodies stick a bit better than her occasionally cornball lyrics; the fluidity of Even As It All Goes By is the most memorable example. WFJ

LIVE REVIEW Martha Wainwright Jazz Cafe Jan 13 ★★★★★ So comfortable is Martha Wainwright on stage, joshing with audience members about hiding guitar picks in her bra, that she could be in her front room playing to friends. Her acoustic, folksy tunes, charting various shades of heartache, can sometimes seem forgettable, but live she inhabits them heart and soul. And then, of course, there’s that voice, so rich and raw that it lends itself perfectly to an interlude of Edith Piaf numbers, which Wainwright performs beautifully with a little help from jazz pianist Zoe Rahman. and go unrecognised. You can’t help but suspect the record company are delighted with such anonymity. As with the band’s debut, much of Waking Up seems designed to be dropped into whatever is this season’s big US teen TV drama. Passing over the cack-handed rap of Everybody Loves Me and booming All The Right Moves, the likes of Fear and the subKeane balladry of All This Time are carefully heartfelt, painfully sincere and resolutely anti-charismatic. If they sound familiar, that’s the general idea. Give ’em time and they’ll sink without trace, too. WILL FULFORD-JONES

Alison Grinter PICKS OUT THIS WEEK’S BEST LIVE MUSIC

GIG OF THE WEEK WOLFMOTHER Hippy-fied frontman Andrew Stockdale may have returned in 2009 with a new line-up, but as Wolfmother’s latest album Cosmic Egg attests, the band haven’t compromised on their heavy rock sound one iota. Cosmic Egg has had a bit of a roasting from the critics for highlighting the band’s failure to evolve. But what did they expect from a band channelling the hard-rock elements of AC/DC and Black Sabbath, along with the mystic stylings of Led Zep? And anyway, Wolfmother (now a quartet) are pretty ace live.

BRETT ANDERSON

Darryl ‘DMC’ Matthews McDaniels is one-third of Run DMC, the innovative hip-hop act who crashed through a wall (both literally and metaphorically) to jam with Aerosmith on Walk This Way. Since the murder of his bandmate Jam Master Jay in 2002, DMC has been solo and will be previewing his new album The Next Level this week.

Some band members flourish on their lonesome. Some don’t. Witness onetime Britpop pin-up Brett Anderson. Since The Tears – formed with his exSuede bandmate Bernard Butler – went MIA, Anderson’s solo career has been DOA with three lacklustre albums. But Suede fans no doubt will be sated by his return to the stage.

Sam Allardyce What’s there to know about ‘Big Sam’? Well, he’s certainly one of the more high-profile English managers getting about. But he’s never actually won much. He can’t be a complete dud. No, he’s not a dud. He did very well with a limited Bolton squad

Daniel Vettori will play for Queensland and Ross Taylor will be in the Victorian line-up when the two teams clash to decide which team will join South Australia in the IPL finals in India.

Pakistan saga Pakistan’s tour of Australia descened into a debacle when there was a public fallout over the selection of keeper and vice-captain Kamran Akmal. Akmal dropped four catches in the second Test, but publicly maintained that as a member of the tour selection committee he would not drop himself. But he eventually fell on his sword handing Sarfraz Ahmed a debut cap.

South Africa were in the box seat to level their four-Test series against England.

South Africa had England 3-48 heading into the fourth day, with the tourists needing another 196 to make the Proteas bat again. Going into the final Test, England held a 1-0 series lead. Dale Steyn (5-51) was the man who put South Africa in the dominant position on the first day when he ripped

through the English line-up to bowl them out for 180. Paul Collingwood (47) and Ian Bell (35) were once again the best of the English batsmen. Steyn was more than ably supported by Morne Morkel (3-39) who did the damage early, dismissing three of the top-four batsmen. When South Africa got their chance to bat, it was Graeme Smith (105) and

Hashim Amla (75) who laid the early foundations with a 165-run stand. Mark Boucher played another typically aggressive innings as he put the English bowlers to the sword scoring 95 off 118 deliveries. Smith declared at 7-423. England’s hopes appeared to rest on Kevin Pietersen.

Technology still causing problems England go up in unison

Graeme Smith was caught in the middle of a storm concerning the video review system in the fourth Test. While on 15 in South Africa’s first innings, Smith appeared to get an edge to a wide delivery off Ryan Sidebottom which flew through to England keeper Matt Prior. Smith stood his ground and umpire Tony Hill gave him not out. England captain Andrew Strauss immediately asked for a review but third umpire Daryl Harper stood by Hill’s decision. Smith went on to score 105. It was later claimed that Harper could not hear the

edge on his monitor because he didn’t have the sound turned up loud enough. England later lodged an official complaint and repeated their objection to the review system. Smith later said he didn’t believe he hit the ball. “There definitely was a noise but I didn’t feel I’d touched the ball,” he said. “Even talking to Ashwell [Prince] as the review was going on I didn’t feel the ball hit the bat. “That can happen, maybe it did, maybe it didn’t. “I thought it was my thumb on the bat handle, and I still don’t feel like I hit it.”

Australia’s opening odd couple Shane Watson and Simon Katich continued to haunt Pakistan before Hobart’s weather loomed as the tourists’ third Test saviour at Bellerive Oval.

Rain washed out the last 22.4 overs of day four as Pakistan fought for survival at a perilous 4-103 after being set 438 for an improbable victory. After Katich (100) broke his 90s curse to set up an attacking declaration at 5-219, opening partner Watson showed his all-round value by starring in a vital nine-over spell that reaped 2-24. The 28-year-old ended any faint hopes of a Pakistan miracle in dismissing captain Mohammad Yousuf (23) and Umar Akmal (15). Earlier in the match, skipper Ricky Ponting and his deputy

Freddie aims for Ashes return Andrew Flintoff opened the door for a possible Ashes return after revealing his desire to play first-class cricket and also represent England again. Plagued by injuries, Flintoff announced his Test retirement during last year’s home Ashes victory but a successful knee operation now has him keen to play all forms of cricket for Lancashire. The 32-year-old all-rounder’s excitement levels for the game have also been boosted by England’s gripping four-Test battle in South Africa. “During my time in rehabilitation I have been watching England playing well in South Africa and it has made me realise how much I have missed cricket,” he said. “If I am going to go through another six months of hard rehabilitation and training for long hours, I need a big incentive to be the driving

North gets more support Ricky Ponting urged Australia’s selectors to keep the faith with Marcus North after the under-pressure lefthander failed to silence his critics in a no-win situation in the first innings of the third Test against Pakistan. North had nothing to gain and everything to lose when he went to the wicket following Ponting and Michael Clarke’s mammoth 352-run stand. He fell edging a Mohammad Asif leg-cutter, the same manner of his SCG dismissal, for just 21. With 207 runs in six Tests at 23 this summer, the West Australian’s No.6 position is not assured for the two-Test tour of New Zealand in March. But Ponting felt North, who scored three centuries in his first eight Tests, looked in good nick and felt he should be retained.

Lleyton Hewitt

Hewitt gets it tough Lleyton Hewitt faces two familiar roadblocks in his quest for a maiden Australian Open title after the draw was announced – Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and world No.1 Roger Federer.

Australia’s highest-ranked male player will play a qualifier in the first round, but has found himself in a landmine-riddled quarter of the men’s draw. He faces a potential third-

round clash with Baghdatis – his conqueror at last week’s Sydney International and a foe at Melbourne Park in a match that finished at sunrise two years ago – then perhaps Federer in the fourth round. Popular Australian player Peter Luczak received a horror first-up assignment against defending champion and world No.2 Rafael Nadal. Several other Australians fared better in the draw. Both teenager Bernard

Tomic and Australia’s No.1 women’s player Samantha Stosur will play qualifiers, while Casey Dellacqua takes on Anastasiya Yakimoro of Belarus, who is ranked outside the world’s top 100 women. Another Australian on the comeback trail, Alicia Molik, plays world No.75 Julie Coin of France.

Australian tennis bosses were not risking any damage to their recently patched-up relationship with Team Dokic. “We have spoken to Jelena and Jelena’s team, and there’s two sides to the story,” Australian Open boss Craig Tiley said. “All I can speak to is the dealings we’ve had with Jelena’s team, particularly over the past four years, have been nothing but good.”

Jelena Dokic

Former world No.1 John McEnroe warned Australia needs to be patient and realistic with rising tennis prodigy Bernard Tomic. McEnroe said he had practised with Tomic several times over the past two years, but the retired seven-time grand slam singles champion said, while Tomic was a great talent, Australian fans should temper their often over-the-top tennis expectations for the 17-year-old. “He’s got great upside obviously but it’s not easy to make that jump real fast – the best junior expected to beat a top pro player … physically the breakthrough is much more difficult,” McEnroe said. “The history of Australian tennis, there’s so many great players … the expectations are higher than is fair sometimes.”

Seeds as expected Australian Open organisers kept the seedings according to world rankings and resisted the temptation to elevate or lower players – most notably star Belgian duo Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters. Seven-time grand slam winner Henin was unseeded as she continues her road back from a year-long hiatus from the sport. Clijsters will be seeded 15th. Only two Australians were seeded – Lleyton Hewitt 22nd in the men’s singles and Samantha Stosur 13th in the women’s draw. Defending men’s champion Rafael Nadal was No.2 men’s seed, putting him on course to meet Federer in the final.

Australian tennis officials threw their support behind embattled Jelena Dokic despite her entourage being embroiled in an air-rage incident en route to the Australian Open. BALLS, PLEASE

This week, the Australian Open heralds the start of the tennis year. We look ahead to some of 2010’s stories in the making WORDS TOM STURROCK HEWITT: “I CAN WIN WIMBLEDON” The former world No.1 turns 29 next month and hasn’t made a Grand Slam final since the 2005 Aussie Open – but that hasn’t stopped the little battler talking himself up. Hewitt makes the legitimate point that he doesn’t lose to many mugs in the majors. If he can stay injury-free, the pugnacious little bugger will back himself in for a return to the Top 10 and a real crack at a third Grand Slam title. Good luck.

CAREERS What do you do day to day?

CAREERS & MONEY

I’m heading to Africa to pick up a stringer’s job, so basically I need to monitor breaking news, travel out to wherever it’s happening and hopefully use whatever contacts I have to piece together the story. I have to write it all up on a pretty tight deadline and then file it. What’s the best thing about your job?

ON THE JOB JEREMY CLARKE Career Journalist Age 26 Lives Bayswater From Sydney, Australia How did you get into your line of work?

I studied journalism at university back in Sydney and then went travelling through Africa. I didn’t have much of a plan, but I managed to pick up writing assignments and semiregular work wherever I went.

The best thing about being a journalist is that I get paid to be interested in the world. I enjoy writing, but the stage before that is probably more important – finding the stories and fleshing them out. I really enjoy that process of inquiry and figuring out how to convey that to people. What’s the most challenging thing about your job?

I’ve spent a lot of time away from Australia, and while that’s been exciting, there’s a lot that I miss about home. I guess, day-to-day, it can be frustrating when a story gets cut or doesn’t quite pan out the way you envisaged it.

TACKLES YOUR CAREER DRAMAS

When is a good time to look for a job? It depends what kind of job you’re looking for. But Hays manager Catherine Goosem says there’s usually a spike in jobs at the beginning of the year, following the Christmas break, and then again after the summer holidays. This year the recession

means that there won’t be the usual peaks, but it doesn’t mean there’s no opportunities. “Last year we saw continued demand for high performers with specialist skills and we expect this to continue into 2010,” Goosem says. If there are suitable jobs out there for you, make sure you are really selling yourself.

change to the UK’s visa regulations will open the door to people born overseas to British-born mothers before 1983, who, until now, were unable to register as British citizens. These people would likely otherwise have been eligible for an ancestry visa, but switching that into citizenship can be a long and complex process. “This would be of particular interest to people in the UK who may have decided to enter

as ancestry visa holders as they were not eligible for registration,” said David O’Dea, immigration adviser at smoothmigration.com. “This would mean that they could potentially take as much as six years off the time needed to qualify for citizenship.”

Layoffs will be inevitable if the Australian government imposes recommended new controls on gambling, NSW clubs and hotels have warned. They say the controls would reduce revenue by 30 per cent, and force 190 venues to close.

An estimated 30,000 nonEU migrant workers in the technology sector, with a majority from India, entered the UK under intra-company transfers last year, flooding the market and reducing the number of vacancies.

COMING & GOING ACCOMMODATION There are Antipodeans and South Africans calling all parts of London home, but generally they tend to head west (Acton, Shepherd’s Bush, Fulham, Hammersmith), north (Dollis Hill, Kilburn, Willesden Green) or south (Clapham, Southfields, Tooting). For listings see tntmagazine. com/accommodation. Dossing Offer to chip in £5 a night minimum. Hostels Expect to pay at least £10-£25 a night. Sharing You can share a room for about £50 a week, while a room to yourself will start at about £80 a week. Going it alone A bedsit or studio is at least £150 a week. Bills Bills can include phone, gas, electricity, water, council tax and a TV licence. Bond This is usually a month’s rent. You may also have to pay one month’s rent in advance. Leases You may need to sign a lease, which will typically run for six or 12 months.

ASK THE EXPERTS David O’Dea SMOOTH MIGRATION

Q

I am a Kiwi who is here on a five-year ancestry visa. My Australian partner lives here on a sponsored work visa. We plan to go back to live in New Zealand once his visa expires. Is it true that if we got married and wanted to come back to the UK, he could come as a spouse on my ancestry visa? And if we had a child and wanted to come back to the UK, would this be possible? I wouldn’t be working but my partner would.

A

Your husband and child would be able to return to the UK as your dependants and would receive visas in line with yours. Your

husband would have the same right to work as yourself, but the rules stipulate the main applicant should be able to work and intend on doing so in the UK. If you spent five years on your ancestry visa and your partner spent the same amount of time on his work permit you would both be able to apply for permanent residency. By doing this you should really be intending on making the UK your home and could lose this status if you left for more than two years.

you want, though it’s usual to give a month’s notice and help find someone to move in. Pay and cancel your bills

Namely council tax, internet, phone, gas, electricity, TV, gym membership, insurance. Settle overdrafts and credit cards Any defaults on bank

payments will be filed with a credit reference agency (making it difficult for you to set up an account or rent a flat if you return), or you could receive a County Court Judgement.

EMPLOYMENT Getting a job doesn’t have to be an impossible task. Register with a couple of agencies, the cream of which advertise in TNT and at tntjobs.co.uk. Most recruitment agencies handle specific sectors: IT, banking, finance, secretarial, legal, medical and teaching are the broad categories. Make an appointment to see a consultant, and take your passport, CV and references with you. Some agencies will help you open a bank account.

TNT Images

NATIONAL INSURANCE You need a National Insurance (NI) number to work in the UK. Call 0845 600 0643 to make an appointment to apply for one. Some NI contributions go into a State Second Pension (S2P). You can contract out of this and direct the money into a private pension fund instead. You’ll need to do this before the end of the tax year or your contributions will be lost.

much notice you need to give your employer will depend on your contract (usually two weeks to three months). You must give at least one week’s notice if you’ve been in your job for a month or more. Give notice on your flat

Check the conditions of your Tenancy Agreement. If you want to leave before your lease is up you may be liable to pay until new tenants are found. If you’re living in a sharehouse and haven’t signed a contract, you can move out whenever

The UK tax year begins on April 6, and if you work only part of the tax year you should get some tax back. The tax threshold is £6475 per year – so if you earn less than this, you won’t pay any tax. You’ll need a P45 (when you leave a job) and a P60 (at the end of the tax year). If you’re leaving the UK and won’t work again before the end of the tax year, you can claim a rebate by filling in a P85.

SHIPPING Get plenty of quotes, checking sizes and whether customs and tax charges are covered. For sea freight (which should take no longer than 12 weeks to arrive) you’ll pay about £80£150 for your first box – less for suitcases – and £30-£90 for additional boxes.

e careful you don’t end up in Morocco,” quips our windsurfing instructor Guido as we head into the turquoise water off Playa Sotavento, one of Fuerteventura’s best beaches. In the natural lagoon created by an offshore sandbank, the Canary island’s legendary wind and safe water levels make it the perfect place to learn. Speed past the sandbank, though, and the north-easterly wind might just whip you across a narrow stretch of the Atlantic, all the way to the west coast of Africa.

item of clothing on between them. Winter in the Canary Islands isn’t only mild enough for water sports, it seems.

WIND IN YOUR SAILS Year-round sunshine and strong winds are just two reasons water sports enthusiasts – or those looking to be – should head to the second largest Canary island in winter. The off-season means a lack of crowds, a surplus of good package deals and little sign of the Brits abroad vibe that might put some off a visit to the Spanish archipelago. At Pro Center René Egli II it’s hard to believe that the Irish bars of the island’s main resort Corralejo exist, though. The shack, stuffed to the brim with boards and sails, and manned by tanned, tousled hair types, fronts a deserted, 3km beach of soft, caramel sand. The centre was opened by René Egli 25 years ago and has since grown into one of the biggest windsurfing centres in the world. The empire doesn’t stop there. Further north along the Costa

TRAVEL

From Fuerteventura it’s only a 35-minute ferry trip to Lanzarote, an island famous for its volcanic landscape. In Timanfaya National Park you can ride a camel up the Montanas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) or, better still, take a coach tour into the lava fields created by eruptions in the 16th and 17th centuries. Leave time to see the geysers at Islote de Hilario or have a meal in the restaurant El Diablo, where the food is cooked using the earth’s heat. See turismolanzarote.com.

63 Calma, Egli has a kiteboarding school too. This is where the seasonally empty beaches really come in handy, as groups of beginners wrestle with kite strings without the accompanying fear of trampling sun bathers.

WHEN TO GO In winter or spring to avoid the crowds. GETTING THERE Direct flights from London to Fuerteventura take about four hours. GETTING AROUND Hire a car to explore the island. For 5 per cent off log on to easycar.com/tntmagazine. VISAS South Africans need a Schengen visa. CURRENCY Euro. 1 GBP = 1.12 EUR. LANGUAGE Spanish. GOING OUT A beer is about €5. ACCOMMODATION Hotel rooms from €30 or look for good value package deals. SEE turismodecanarias.com; fuerteventuraturismo.com.

HAWAII OF EUROPE Inland Fuerteventura is worlds away from the blissful white beaches of the coast, with the eerie lunar landscape broken only by scattered villages and grazing goats (goat’s cheese is one of the island’s main exports – more goats live here than people). We take a drive in the early evening to catch the sun setting on El Cotillo. Kite surfs dot the horizon, but in this part of the island it’s regular surfing that rules. Lajares is the island’s surf hangout, with rental shops complemented by laid-back bars and restaurants. Peter Brabants, who owns a surf school here, tells us that the north-east is best for beginners while the north shore reef breaks benefit the more experienced surfer. “This is the best place I’ve ever surfed,” he says. “It’s the Hawaii of Europe.” IT’S A KIND OF FEELING Driving back to our hotel our guide Robert tells us: “Fuerteventura doesn’t have big attractions, it has a feeling. It’s special.” I know what’s he getting at: Fuerteventura doesn’t have the black lava landscapes of Lanzarote or Spain’s highest mountain like Tenerife – but to say it lacks attractions misses the very obvious appeal of catching waves or soaking up rays on an empty sandy beach in winter.

TNT Weekender Avoriaz FRENCH ALPS

On the French and Swiss border, in the shadow of Mount Blanc, the Portes du Soleil ski area attracts skiers and boarders (and hardy sledding fans) who come for the thousands of kilometres of runs on offer between December and April, and the chance to ski in two countries on the same day.

www.morzine-avoriaz.com, Image Bank Sweden

HEADLINE ATTRACTION Two of the area’s main resorts (there are 12) are Morzine and Avoriaz. Morzine is a large ski town but still manages to look pretty with wooden chalets and fairy lights adorning the restaurants and bars. A local bus service runs through the town and will take you to the base of nearby slopes. Just outside of town is the ski cable car to Avoriaz, perched 600m above Morzine on the cliffs above the valley Ardoisières. Avoriaz is ski-in, ski-out. No cars are allowed so there are horse-drawn carriages on offer to ferry you around.

PARKLIFE Opened in 2007, the Burton Stash is a

snowpark in Avoriaz where boarders and skiers can turn tricks. The slopes wind among the trees and are punctuated with hidden wooden obstacles that boarders can hit to create jumps. There are wooden elements including a wall for vertical sliding, logs and tree trunk obstacles and wooden tables for sliding on.

THE LIE OF THE LAND Advanced skiers should make for the Hauts Forts area in Avoriaz, where long, steep runs take you all the way back to the valley floor. Beginners can try out the area serviced by the TS Seraussaix lift. The runs are wide and not as steep, so you’ll have plenty of time

to work on your moves on the way down.

WHEN TO GO The ski season runs until late April. GETTING THERE EasyJet fl ies from London to Geneva in Switzerland, with bus connections to Morzine. VISAS Aussies and Kiwis don’t need a visa. Saffas need a Schengen visa. CURRENCY Euro. 1 GBP = 1.11 EUR. LANGUAGE French. GETTING AROUND By ski or snowboard! The village is small enough to explore on foot. GOING OUT A beer costs about €5. ACCOMMODATION Rude Chalets offers catered and self-catered chalets in Morzine and apartments in Avoriaz. Another budget option is The Morzine Mountain Hostel.

Morzine has restaurants to suit all budgets and lively bars and clubs (Bar Robinson and the Cavern are two to try) thanks to its seasonnaire population. Avoriaz might be sleepier but there are some great places to eat and drink including the Michelin rated Dromont Hotel. There’s also a bowling alley and an ice rink.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE Try night sledding in Morzine, where you take a ski gondola to the top of the tree-lined Pleney ski run and slide back down it on a plastic sledge.

SUMMERTIME The action doesn’t stop when the snow melts. Instead thrill seekers can take advantage of the mountain biking and hiking trails.

WINNER CLOUD GATE, CHICAGO Astrid Sandberg

Astrid has cleverly composed this image so the reflection appears to be a continuation of reality. The line of buildings march across the frame, the concourse appears to stretch into the distance, people walk in both directions, and the sun shines in the corner. Because the sculpture

takes up half the frame and continues out of it, the reflection becomes the main focus, and the people in the left corner appear to be walking into it. HOT TIP: By focusing on a reflection you can make it appear to be reality. For example, take a reflection

in a puddle or lake and look at the results upside down or use exposure. » Astrid wins a three-day tour of Scotland for two valued at £198 from Haggis Adventures

RUNNER-UP CANADIAN ROCKIES Neal Ebbett Neal’s peaceful shot is full of gentle movement – the strong diagonal in the foreground leads to the right, while a shorter diagonal sweeps to the mountains in the distance. The water is perfectly still so the mountains appear to float. The flowers in the foreground add texture and colour to lift the scene without jarring the serenity. HOT TIP: If you are lucky to

HOW TO MAKE YOUR PHOTOS STAND OUT

THEME: HAND COLOURING Chain Bridge And Buda Castle by Matt Dalton Hand colouring a black and white shot is an alternative way of drawing attention to a subject. Matt has used yellow to lift this night-time image of Budapest.

WHY THIS WORKS: 1 The shot is strong already – Matt has not tried to dress up a bad shot with an effect. 2 Yellow is an appropriate choice as it imitates the yellow of floodlights. 3 The bridge and riverside buildings are separated from the castle. 4 There is extra interest to the

HOT TIPS: 1 Fibre-based paper gives the best results and can handle a variety of materials. Plasticcoated prints can be used with appropriate resources. 2 A print that is slightly lighter

than usual is easier for beginners. Try to choose a subject that is not too dark. 3 You can use a toner bath, such as sepia, gold or platinum. These add warmth or coolness. Simply soak the print as instructed. 4 For selective colouring you can get special photographic paints and pens, but almost

Atlases out! These three countries are always the last to be named when discussing South America. Many people think they’re in Africa, or the Caribbean. Not many plonk them correctly in the north-east of South America, bordering Brazil and the Atlantic Ocean. Guyana borders Venezuela too. They’re short on attractions of the kind you find elsewhere on the continent, and don’t attract many visitors. French Guiana – strictly speaking an overseas department of France, and therefore part of the EU – has the most to see. Here you’ll find the European Space Centre of Kourou, from where rockets blast off, and the Iles du Salut, the former penal colony where Henri Charrière, author of prison-break book Papillon, was based. The book and subsequent film are both ace, by the way. Apart from that it’s rainforest all the way, and these three countries have huge amounts of deep, impenetrable jungle. Guyana’s Kaieteur Falls are the stand-out natural attraction. They’re not cheap to visit – not terribly South American – but these countries are something of a final frontier for an increasingly explored and mapped-out continent.

And as you Aussies and Kiwis will be going home after the first round, you don’t have the option of waiting until the later stages when less fans might free up flights and hotels, allowing you to save £500 or so, but get less of the carnival atmosphere caused by 32 teams’ supporters charging around one of the world’s most beautiful countries. The main problem is that flying to southern Africa tends to involve going via Johannesburg, so the usual cheap entry route into the region happens to be the main transport hub for the tournament. Bah. Give some serious thought to taking six weeks off work, flying to Nairobi and having the time of your life making your way to South Africa in time for the tournament. There are rumours Dutch fans have chartered a dozen overland trucks to do just this, so you’ll have plenty of company. If anyone has better ideas about the World Cup in South Africa, I’d love to hear them.

What is there to see and do in Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana? No one talks very much about them and I wonder if they’re worth a visit? Jim Broad, via emaii

THE GREATEST ADVENTURE The experience of staring into the smouldering eyes of a tiger while on an elephant in India’s Kanha National Park was selected as the world’s greatest travel adventure by a jury of the UK’s top explorers, adventurers and writers. The list was drawn up on behalf of Adventure Travel Live, an exhibition taking place in London on January 29-31. For the past two months, travel luminaries including Lonely Planet founder Tony Wheeler

have assessed the most intense adventures on the planet. Skiing down a live volcano on the Japanese island of Hokkaido was voted in at second place and diving with hammerhead sharks in the Galapagos came in third. An encounter with mountain gorillas in Rwanda took fourth place, while hiking the Inca Trail in Peru and exploring the Larrapinta Trail in Australia’s Northern Territory were placed equal fifth.

Travel to save the planet If your new year’s resolution is to do something good for the planet, then you may find what you’re looking for on an Earthwatch expedition. The international environmental charity is offering expeditions to more than 50 research projects in 24 countries this year. Earthwatch is also launching three expeditions to North America, plus some shorter expeditions, such as three days in New York helping scientists study coyotes in Manhattan and the Bronx. CAPE CRU If you’re not satisfied by the Cape Breton Peninsula you’ll get your money back – at least as far as the resident whales are concerned WORDS ALF ALDERSON

Nova Scotia NORTH-EAST CANADA

P

ut together any list of North America’s top 10 scenic roads, and few in the know would fail to include the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia among their number. The 298km highway loops around the Cape Breton Peninsula at the northern tip of the province, situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of St Lawrence. It’s named after the explorer John Cabot, who was poking about in the region way back in the 1490s, and if you park up and take one of the many hiking trails through the Cape Breton Highlands National Park you’ll discover a wild and verdant forested landscape that’s changed little since Mr Cabot was going about his business. The peninsula is a five-hour drive north of the funky maritime city of Halifax, and the spectacular Cabot Trail is a smooth blacktop snake that dips down to unspoilt beaches, soars above craggy sea cliffs and wends between

The Cabot Trail “ forms an irritatingly scenic highway ” these dense forests to form a highway that’s irritatingly scenic – you feel compelled to stop every couple of kilometres to break out the camera yet again. Two very different cultural regions make the people here as interesting as the landscape and wildlife. Scottish émigrés have clearly left their mark with many settlements boasting a Highlands namesake (Inverness, Craigmore, Creignish, etc), while Celtic traditions such as fiddle playing and ceilidhs are an integral part of local life – there’s even a Gaelic College in the curiously named town of South Gut St Ann’s where, should you so choose, you can learn to play the bagpipes. North-west of the Celtic influence, though, you’ll find things are very French, particularly around the town of Chéticamp. This is where Acadian settlers, whose forebears came from France, made their homes in the 1800s, erecting huge Catholic churches which seem somewhat out of proportion to the small communities they serve. Virtually every home flies the Acadian flag (a tricolour with a small gold star in one corner) alongside the Canadian flag – divided loyalties or just a proud heritage I’m not sure, although I suspect a bit of both. On my autumn visit I encountered weather that would have had the early Scottish settlers feeling very much at home as wind and rain drove in off the Gulf of St Lawrence, but pulling over for a hike in the forest the wind was stilled

I’d hoped to spot a moose, as this is prime territory for these magnificent beasts, but came no nearer than fresh scat and an old skull; however, one healthy population of the local wildlife that I did get to see was whales. The various whale watching trips operating out of Pleasant Bay on the shores of the mighty St Lawrence estuary actually offer a moneyback guarantee if you don’t see a cetacean of some sort, and at a rough estimate I’d say we encountered 50 or more pilot whales during the hour we sailed around the gulf, while other

SURF NOVA SCOTIA Improbable as it may seem, for all its snow, ice and general frozen northerly-ness, Nova Scotia has a small and insanely enthusiastic surf population, with Lawrencetown Beach near Halifax being the focal point of the wave riding action. I visited with the intention of joining that tiny circle of madness – never before had I encountered a surf shop beside a road sign advising motorists of the danger of blowing snow – but unfortunately there were no surfable waves during my stay. However, the same low pressure systems that create waves along the coastlines of Western Europe can also produce some epic beach, reef and point breaks in Nova Scotia – just ensure you have a very good and very thick wetsuit. CAUTION: PROTECT YOUR MONEY! If you claim a tax refund, be sure to use a company bonded by the Association of Tax Agents (ATA). If a company is not bonded by the ATA and goes out of business, you could lose your refund. Also, we recommend you avoid agents who charge unusually low commission rates – three such agents have gone out of business in the last 4 years and clients, like yourself, have lost their money.

A big thank you to the lovely girl who handed in my lost handbag to the DJ at Mish Mash, Clapham Junction, on Saturday night, January 9:

After collapsing and being taken to hospital in an ambulance, it was such a relief to have it returned, especially with my cash still inside! Thank goodness there are kind honest people like you still in the world! Tamara. Yvette aka Bluey: We were flatmates in Ealing Broadway back in 2006. You had to leave suddenly to go back to New Zealand due to a family situation and you never came back to Rooftop Mansion. Would love to meet up with you again if you’re in London, and see what you’ve been up to and talk about the good old times. I tried to email you a while back but your email account doesn’t seem to exist

I had what I thought was a fling with a guy who’s going home soon. I ended up really liking him – but then found out he had a girlfriend all along. He says he’s broken it off, and that he really likes me, but I don’t know if I can trust him again.

A

I’d bet a tenner that he’s still with his girlfriend, which means both you and she

are getting royally played. The bloke knows how to get girls to believe his lies, but here’s some honesty for you (which you obviously haven’t

had in a while): besides the fact that he most likely believes cheating doesn’t count if it’s in a different country, he also probably doesn’t really fancy

anymore. Email farinaljacobs@ hotmail.com. Farin. Chezza: OK … well you are leaving the She Bu for greener pastures, but you’ll be sorely missed. It won’t be the same without you. Who else can we eat pepperoni pizza with while playing electronic Monopoly and listening to The GaGa whilst also talking about dugongs and dancing on the kitchen chairs with tassle 1 and 2. Miss you already. With love from the Pennard Palace crew xoxoxoxox. Gary from the Gold Coast: We met on a night out at Fulham Belushi’s back in December. Still up for a trip to the casino to cash it in? You’ll bring your charm, I’ll bring the brains :-). You’ve got my number, phone me. Oceans 14. Wee Chicken: Just wanted to say a big thanks for an epic New Year’s Eve! Haven’t had so much fun for a long time, and though you were working behind the bar, we still managed to get absolutely blind! And that Sunday that followed at the Reddy! Oh gosh, I’m surprised I’m still allowed back in! Let me know when you’re over power hour ban and we shall make friends with teapots and Bundaberg once again! Trouble and trouble equals disaster – and I’m loving it! Cheers for the crazy times at 2010!

you all that much. He won’t leave his girlfriend for you, won’t stay in London for you, and all things considered, I’d bet 10 more quid he’s screwing someone else on the side. You had it right in the beginning – let it go. It was a fling, it meant more to you than him. Leave it at that.
