Do Saffas know best when it comes to barbecues/braais? (‘Saffas know best’, TNT Letters). The food would have to be good if you were washing it down with your underachieving beer and wines. I moved to the Ravenscourt Park area not so long ago and expected to have peace and quiet. My first night was awful – I was suddenly woken by the most dreadful screaming, like something or someone was being murdered. This

I hate mornings – always have done, always will do. I just don’t understand why anyone would like to get out of bed any time before noon if they weren’t forced to. For some reason you morning people think you’re so much better than everyone else when you sit there with your porridge sprinkled with hand-picked blueberries and home-made scones at 6am. But I tell you what early birds, you’re the most boring people I’ve come across. And guess what, research shows that people who get up later have a longer attention span throughout the day. And from my experience they have much more fun, too. In your face, early birds!

I phoned Hammersmith and Fulham Council, as the foxes also cause havoc with rubbish bins, and I am sure they have killed some of the smaller pets too. I asked the council if they could do something about it and they replied “No they can’t”! I asked what I could do, and the operator suggested

I want to thank the three people who hauled me off the road after I stacked my bike in Balham on Tuesday. I was too dazed to say much at the time, but am so grateful that you took the time to stop. THE MAYOR’S THAMES FESTIVAL FREE WHAT: The south banks of the Thames are transformed into outdoor performance spaces when the area plays host to London’s biggest and best free arts festival. WHEN: September 11-12. DO IT BECAUSE: There’s plenty happening on the banks of the Thames year-round, but they can still be a bit grey and foreboding. For this event, though, they explode in a burst of colour and chaos. It’s a great vibe on an early autumn evening, with highlights including music, installations and street theatre.

Capital idea: Gerry’s Soho is commonly associated with London’s sleazier elements – and not without good cause – but there’s also a seriously cosmpolitan aspect, with the area boasting a growing reputation for great food and drink. Indeed, Gerry’s may be London’s most famous bottle shop, offering an unparalleled range of wine and spirits. They stock more than 30 kinds of gin, for example. Soho, of course, has long been steeped in drinking

folklore, with plenty of famous boozehounds (think Oscar Wilde, Karl Marx) nursing their share of hangovers in its dimly-lit backstreets. In becoming a Soho institution, Gerry’s has tapped into that cherished history of vice while attracting the more well-to-do set that consider themselves connoisseurs when it comes to grog. TS

If you ever need a reminder that London is bloody old, all you need do is observe the remnants of the London Wall that can still be found on the grounds of the Museum of London, just north of St Paul’s, in the Barbican Estate and around Tower Hill. The wall was built in the second or third century AD as a defensive boundary to protect the Roman settlement around the port then known as Londinium, probably to

keep out the Picts who were causing trouble up north. It was one of the largest construction projects carried out in Roman Britain, using

stone that would have taken some 1300 journeys to be transported from Kent. The wall was used as a fortification for a further 1000 years and it was not until the 18th and 19th centuries that it was substantially demolished. Even after the Blitz in the Second World War, some of the tallest ruins in the bombravaged heart of the capital were remnants of the London Wall. TS

’s t ha Win a name?

London’s fascinating street names hint at a colourful past WORDS LARA BRUNT

P

uzzled by Poultry? Confused by Cornhill? London’s full of weird and wonderful street names but have you ever wondered where they came from?

STREETS AHEAD Some of the oldest street names are – unsurprisingly – in the Roman and medieval heart of the capital, the City of London. “A lot of the names in the City itself date back possibly even to the old English period, which is pre-Norman conquest, pre-1066,” says David Mills, author of A Dictionary of London Place Names. “They include Eastcheap and Cheapside, which referred to two ancient markets for the east and the west side of the city,” he explains. “Other names referring to products on sale in the old city, like Cornhill, Bread Street, Milk Street and so on, are also quite ancient.”

The streets surrounding St Paul’s take their names from prayers

tntmagazine.com

HIDDEN MEANINGS But while the origins of some street names are pretty clear, others are more intriguing and have less obvious roots.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME No wonder they changed these street names …

■ GRUB STREET

LONDON

■ STINKING LANE

Perhaps once infested by caterpillars and worms, it was changed to Milton Street in 1830.

11

Lots of slaughterhouses = not so pleasant smell. Wisely changed to King Edward Street in 1843.

■ SHITEBURN LANE Home to public loos, it was unsurprisingly changed to the less evocative Sherborne Lane.

■ GREAT BLOODY FIELD Can’t imagine London’s posh crowd hanging out here. Sloane Square is a definite improvement. Expensive real estate: Cheapside

Laila Pacheco / TNT Images

“There are names in the City that surprise you when you look at their origin,” says Mills. “Aldgate is one of the old Roman gates to the city and looks as if it should mean ‘old gate’. In fact, the early spellings show it was an ‘ale gate’, so very few people would have any idea that Aldgate has to do with beer.”

MEDIEVAL MAZE Grab yourself a map and discover just what is in a name. Begin at Pudding Lane EC3, where the Great Fire of London started in 1666. It gets its name from the ‘pudding’, or offal, which fell from the butchers’ carts as they made their way towards the waste barges on the Thames. Head up Eastcheap EC3, and make your way to Clements Lane EC3, named after the original 11th century St Clement’s church which was later made famous in the nursery rhyme, Oranges and Lemons. Turn left onto Lombard Street EC3, named after the Italian moneylenders from Lombardy who took over banking after Edward I expelled the Jews in 1290, and pass Pope’s Head Alley EC3. Named after the tavern that stood here in the sixteenth century, its sign featured a picture of the Pope’s head as the majority of the population could not read. EASY STREET Travel up Poultry EC2, home to the city’s poulterers who sent their feathered friends to be prepared in the ominous-sounding

Scalding Alley, and pass Old Jewry EC2, centre of the old Jewish quarter, then Ironmonger Lane EC2, where ironmongers plied their trade. Walk along Cheapside EC2 and turn left down Bow Lane EC4, named after the church of St Mary-le-Bow – it’s said that only those born within earshot of its bells can call themselves true cockneys. When you reach St Paul’s, check out the nearby streets believed to take their names from prayers recited during processions round the cathedral – Paternoster Row EC4 (‘pater noster’ means ‘our Father’ in Latin), Ave Maria Lane EC4 (Latin for ‘Hail Mary’) and Amen Corner EC4. Walk up Ludgate Hill EC4, meaning ‘back gate’ and another of the Roman gateways into the city, and finish up at Fleet Street EC4, named after the River Fleet that still flows underground and famous for its demon barber and newspaper hacks.

The bells of St Mary-le-Bow church helped define Cockney roots

GET STREETWISE London’s more unusual street names …

HA-HA ROAD SE18

Medieval junkies? Nah, just a spot-on description of the sharp rise in the road.

A ‘ha-ha’ was an eighteenth century garden design with a trench that caused much hilarity when unsuspecting people fell in.

COCK LANE EC1

KNIGHTRIDER STREET EC4

Cruel rather than rude – fighting cocks were sold here, a popular pastime from the Middle Ages until it was banned in 1834.

Sadly not named after David Hasslehoff’s Michael Knight, but after the knights who rode down here on their way to jousts.

We plumped for a mixed grill, a scrumptiously succulent meat feast of sirloin, rump and fillet steak, sausages and cheese, which arrived sizzling on a hot plate. WHAT YOU NEED: 1 tbs olive oil; 25g butter; 1 finely chopped red onion; 1 finely chopped garlic clove; 2cm piece of fresh ginger peeled and grated; 1 tsp curry powder; 250g longgrain rice; 200g smoked trout fillets, boned and flaked. To serve: 3 hard-boiled eggs; a handful of coriander leaves; lime wedges; half a cucumber, sliced. THE WORK: Heat the oil and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion with a good pinch of salt and cook for 8-10 minutes until soft. Then add the garlic, ginger and curry powder and cook for two minutes.

FEAST ON THE BRIDGE HIGHLIGHTS – SEP 11 The foody celebration takes place on Southwark Bridge.

Bridge bakery Brockwell Bake serves up bread and pizzas cooked in mobile ovens. Grab a slice and enjoy at the giant tables. Add the rice to the pan and stir to coat it in oil. Pour in 500ml of water, bring to the boil and then turn down to a simmer. Cover the pan and cook for 15 minutes, or until the water has been absorbed. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the trout.

Serve the kedgeree topped with egg and coriander leaves, and with lime and cucumber on the side. » TNT readers can buy Bill’s Basics for £17 (normally £25) with free p&p. To order, call 01256 302699 and quote “4NF”.

My job requires me to travel quite a bit and my girlfriend is finding it increasingly difficult to deal with my time away. How can I balance the demands of my career with my relationship?

In any relationship worth preserving, you should be able to follow your dreams. I’m sure it would be an enormous comfort for her; she could sleep with the doll next to her or hang it around her neck while she goes about her housework. Just make sure your girlfriend doesn’t develop an interest in the dark arts because she may try to ‘activate’ the doll in order to replace you. And that, as always, would end in tears.

STRIKE A POSE Some film roles demand that little bit extra from actors, and a fine example is Kiwi Flight Of The Conchords star Jemaine Clement stripping off for porn shots in a public park – all in the name of art, of course.

Clement, who plays an eccentric artist with an appetite for nudity in new comedy Dinner For Schmucks, was asked to prove his suitability for the role by sending the producers porn pictures of himself while on holiday in Greece.

As inspiration for the shoot the producers sent him some examples to look at. “I checked my email at an internet cafe and opened a PDF with 20 or 30 pictures of naked guys,” Clement told The Observer. He found a photographer who was willing to take the shots, but soon found out that there was no studio. “So I had to go to a public park in Athens and replicate gay porn shots in my underpants.” Playgirl next, hey Jemaine?!

Real-life lovers traditionally do not make convincing onscreen couples, so it’s a welcome surprise, then, that on-off pair Drew Barrymore and Justin Long generate great chemistry in Going the Distance, a strong candidate for the most enjoyable rom-com of the year so far. Long plays record company worker Garrett who starts a relationship in New York with wannabe writer Erin (Barrymore). The two click like Lego but soon Erin has to head back to San Francisco and the couple have to face up to the pain and insecurity of a long-distance relationship. Refreshingly, the film is largely devoid of contrived plot-twists that are so prevalent in the rom-com genre. Most of the emotions

the couple experience feel real, something that is helped by Barrymore and Long’s believable performances. True, director Nanette Burstein shoe-horns in some needless gross-out scenes that are at odds with the subtlety that

precedes it, but Barrymore and Long are such charming leads, this is well worth checking out for those who have tried to keep a fledgling relationship going over the phone. GOOD FOR: Romantics. PIERRE DE VILLIERS

THE REEL DEAL Kiwi True Blood star Anna Paquin will have a cameo in Scream 4, now shooting in Michigan. The Wes Craven project has a top-secret script, but those in the know say the cameo is of a similar nature to that of Drew Barrymore’s in the original Scream. USA Today broke the news of Paquin’s cameo. Apparently The Hollywood Reporter already knew of the cameo, but complied with a request not to reveal it as a service to movie fans.

THE LAST EXORCISM

★★★★★ A minister steps into hell when he performs an exorcism on a farm in this creepy, Eli Roth-produced horror film. The material covers familiar territory but some shaky documentary-type footage and improvised acting ensure that this will give even the most hardcore horror fans nightmares. GOOD FOR: Those with a strong ticker. PDV

THE RUNAWAYS

★★★★★ Kristen Stewart shows she has a future after Twilight with a fine turn as 1970s rocker Joan Jett in a film that chronicles the rise of group The Runaways. The film doesn’t delve into what drove the band, but Michael Shannon is superb as the group’s sleazy manager and director Floria Sigismondi meticulously recreates the era. GOOD FOR: Those who love rock ’n’ roll PDV

Mel Gibson may be suffering one of the worst media scandals of his career, but apparently it’s having a relatively small impact on the Aussie film star’s box office pull in the United States. According to a poll in the US by 60 Minutes and Vanity Fair, more than three quarters of respondents said they would not be affected by audiotapes of phone calls, widely reported to be Gibson (pictured) ranting at his estranged exgirlfriend, when deciding whether to see one of the Oscar winner’s films.

Victoria (abovethestag.com). Until September 26. £14

In 1968, Jimi Hendrix and his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham moved into the top floor flat of 23 Brook Street, the same building where George Frideric Handel lived and composed for 36 years during the 18th century. Hendrix was delighted at the musical connection, saying: “This is my first real home of my own”. This exhibition, mounted to mark the 40th anniversary of the influential guitarist’s death on September 18, 1970, examines in detail his contribution to modern music. There’s certainly something odd about exploring the life and times of hard-living wild man Hendrix while someone gently plays Handel on the harpsichord in the next room. But it’s perhaps fitting for a man for whom convention and “the ordinary” were simply barriers to be broken down.

Definitely worth a look – there’s handwritten lyrics, a fabulous Hendrix-penned cartoon, his lurid orange velvet jacket and one of his famous hats. SAMANTHA BADEN

The Killers have been sliding towards blandness since the completion of their terrific new-wave debut Hot Fuss and lead singer Brandon Flowers’ first solo jaunt Flamingo doesn’t seek to reverse this trend. So if you found The Killers’ 2008 LP Day & Age to be a snooze-fest then you’ll likely find this to be the sonic equivalent of Mogadon.

Sarah Blasko Electric Ballroom, Nov 17 (0870 264 3333). £12.50

There’s plenty of Killers-style operatic pop, thematic explorations of godliness versus Las Vegas glitz, gambling metaphors and overblown production. But all the studio work in the world

can’t hide the weak songcraft and the lazy arrangements. Flamingo is the last gasp of a man fresh out of ideas, or a man sitting comfily on his laurels. Either ain’t good. ALISON GRINTER

LIVE REVIEW Leeds Festival Bramham Park Aug 27-29 ★★★★★ The talk is all about whether Sunday’s headliners, Guns N’ Roses, are going to show, and speculation swirls about as to Pete Doherty’s ability to stand up long enough to deliver his set with the Libertines. In the end, Axl Rose (pictured) rocks out – albeit 30 minutes late and with a succession of ridiculous guitar-filled intervals for his costume changes. And it turns out that Doherty is also

on form. Dizzee Rascal pleases with a version of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit and credit goes to Blink 182 for an impressive stage show that attracts a youth stampede. REBECCA KENT

FEDDE LE GRAND

At least three things make this party great. First up is Space Ibiza resident Jonathan Ulysses, his Balearic beats always please. Second is the venue, a space-age, firecracker of a club called The Lightbox. Finally, you’ve gotta wear some headgear, and we do like that.

Put your hands up for Fedde. The Dutch DJ’s string of hits such as Let Me Think About It and The Creeps are known to create mayhem on the dance floor. He’s in the main room at Ministry this weekend where you can expect more of the same electro-fuelled anarchy.

The school’s principal, Garry Martin, admitted he made a “hypersensitive” decision. “I just suggested to kids that nowadays gay can mean different things,” Martin said. Crusader Hillis, from gay and lesbian advocacy group the Also Foundation, said schools had a duty to teach children about respect and diversity.

The kookaburra that sits in the old gum tree, as the classic Australian song goes, may not live such a gay life anymore. Lepage Primary school in Cheltenham, Victoria, controversially banned the word “gay” from the song about Australia’s indigenous bird and instead told students to sing the line “how fun your life must be”.

Labor now has 74 members on its side, including Greens MP Adam Bandt. It needs the support of two of the three other independents – Bob Katter, Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott – who are yet to decide who they will back to form government. “It is in fact the ALP that

best meets my criteria that the next government must be stable, confident and ethical,” Wilkie said. However, the new member for Denison, Tasmania, stressed that he would not necessarily pass all Labor legislation. Gillard thanked Wilkie for his “decency and diligence”.

Chesterton was defamed: jury Justice Lucy McCallum said the eight defamatory meanings found by the jury were “serious imputations on Mr Chesterton’s reputation”. It was a “nasty, vituperative attack, the terms of which were calculated to humiliate,” Justice McCallum added. She rejected the defence of qualified privilege made by Laws’ lawyers and the claim that Laws’ spray was a reply to Chesterton referring to him as a “70-year-old disc jockey” in his column – a description that was “calculated to belittle one of Australia’s greatest broadcasters”.

■ The ALP secures the backing of independent MP Andrew Wilkie. ■ Wilkie says Labor is best placed to form a minority government with 74 seats, over the Coalition’s 73. ■ Julia Gillard promises to tackle problem gambling.

Radio station 2UE was ordered to pay $90,000 to former Daily Telegraph columnist Ray Chesterton after veteran broadcaster John Laws called him a “beer-bellied buffoon” and “Ankles” on air. The jury trial at the NSW Supreme Court was run on the basis that “ankles” was a term meaning a despicable person who is ‘lower than a c***’. According to the transcript, Laws, 70, told his audience that the now-retired Chesterton, 64, was a “bombastic, beer-bellied buffoon … a creep … [with] an inferiority complex … [whose friends call him] Ankles”.

SUMMARY

ndependent MP Andrew Wilkie, one of the four independents holding the balance of power in the House of Representatives, gave his backing for a minority Labor government. His decision, made in light of Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s promises to tackle problem gambling and to fund a $100m upgrade of Hobart Hospital, gave Labor an edge over the Liberal-National coalition, which has 73 seats – three short of the 76 required for a parliamentary majority.

The quake, the nation’s most damaging since 1931, forced people from their homes and left the city centre resembling a warzone. Around a dozen people were pulled from either lifts, buildings or holes in the ground and, although there were no initial reports of

casualties, a man in his 50s was taken to hospital and placed under intensive care. Welfare centres were set up around the city to provide food and shelter, while emergency service workers, with urban search and rescue personnel, scoured the streets for trapped or injured people.

Wage offer rejected A nationwide strike by South African public sector workers was likely to continue into its third week after the Congress of South African Trade Unions rejected an increased wage offer. Union leaders were in ongoing discussions with the government about its latest offer to increase wages by 7.5 percent and workers’ monthly housing allowance to R800. The strike had closed thousands of schools and disrupted treatment at hospitals. It had also been a catalyst for further industrial action at car parts manufacturers, where a separate wage strike forced Volkswagen AG to shut its South African plant. State workers wanted an 8.6 per cent wage increase and a housing allowance of R1000.

The account had lain dormant since September 2008 until recently, when, within hours, the number of its followers rose to nearly 150 as ‘Zuma’ began tweeting about his trip to China, the proposed media tribunal and the public sector strikes.

Amid other accusations, Maphatsoe alleged that the nearly broke broadcaster was paying the telephone bills of human resources consultant Justice Ndaba, despite him not being a permanent board member. “Integrity must be restored,” Maphatsoe demanded. SABC also faced accusations that it offered to sell positive news coverage to the Democratic Alliance-run Western Cape government on a flagship live morning TV programme for R217,700.

WESTERN CAPE Police planned to team up with local media to name and shame motorists who flouted road rules by driving in a lane for bus and minibuses on the N2 in Cape Town. The lane was introduced in 2007 to cut travelling time into the city during the morning rush, but regular drivers had consistently disobeyed the restrictions. Kevin Pietersen gets dropped What’s happened? England have dropped Kevin Pietersen from their limited-overs squad for T20s and 50-over games against Pakistan. Isn’t he their best batsman? Pretty much. He’s been out of form in Tests and ODIs over the past 18 months – averaging 35 and 17 respectively –

but he was still named man of the tournament when England won the World T20 earlier this year. Any implications for the Ashes? The worry for the Poms is if he’s still out of form because the Aussies will happily kick him while he’s down. Although KP did respond by belting a century for Surrey.

A long-range penalty goal by full-back Kurtley Beale with the last kick of the match enabled Australia to defeat South Africa in a thrilling Tri-Nations match on Saturday. The Wallabies scored four tries in the space of 17 minutes in the first half, spreading the ball wide with quick passes which enabled their pacy outside backs to rip open the Springboks’ defence. Australia led 31-6 shortly before half-time but the Springboks came storming back to go ahead 33-31 midway through the second half. A penalty from Morne Steyn put South Africa five points ahead, 36-31, with 11 minutes

remaining, and the home side seemed to have gained a decisive advantage when Wallabies replacement hooker Saia Faingaa was yellowcarded for a spear tackle. But Australia produced another thrilling thrust which ended with wing Drew Mitchell scoring under the posts and James O’Connor’s conversion putting them two points ahead. The lead changed again, though, with three minutes remaining, when Steyn landed a penalty from near the right touchline to complete a perfect goal-kicking game and put his side ahead once more. It then fell to Beale, who, with his only kick at goal in the match, calmly booted the ball over from near the right touchline, just inside the South African half.

AUSTRALIA After Australia had apparently blown a rare chance to win at altitude in South Africa, Beale covered himself in glory. The record will not show that he made several errors in the second half, only that he landed the monster penalty to secure a famous win.

Pressure mounts on outspoken De Villiers

“It is an unfortunate reality that these things can happen to anybody. The team supports Bees 100 per cent, not on the deed, but rather on the circumstances that led to the situation developing,” De Villiers said. Unsurprisingly, De Villiers’ paymasters are growing increasingly agitated with a coach who has repeatedly demonstrated a nose for controversy. South Africa’s Times newspaper quoted a SARU official as saying: “We are not only unhappy with what he said regarding the Roux incident, but also over his previous comments.”

The Boks’ loss to Australia in Bloemfontein condemned them to last place in this year’s Tri-Nations series. Less than a year ago, South Africa sat atop the rugby world; they were world champions, Tri-Nations champions and then went on to beat the touring British Lions. But now, with the World Cup 12 months away, coach Peter de Villiers could soon himself a casualty of his side’s recent struggles. De Villiers did himself few favours last week when he pledged his support for Bulls’ prop Bees Roux, who has been charged with the murder of a policeman.

The Titans secured a home final on the back of a masterful display from Scott Prince, who shrugged off a shoulder injury to lead his side home. But it was still a gutsy effort by a Wests Tigers team ravaged by injuries – coach Tim Sheens was forced to dip into the NSW Cup and dust off full-back Sean Meaney, who had played just three minutes of senior football. Down 13-0 at half-time, the Tigers made their intentions clear early in the second half by scoring two tries in as many minutes. The shell-shocked Titans watched as their healthy lead was cut to just one point after Robbie Farah helped set up tries to Chris Heighington and Lote Tuqiri. Prince, who had earlier been taken off after being hammered by Tigers prop Keith Galloway, then sprang to life, sprinting down the blind side to send a brilliant cut-out pass for flying winger Kevin Gordon to score what proved to be the match-winning try, before thumping over the conversion. Prince’s heroics made it 19-12 but the Titans were still forced to weather a big finish from the Tigers. Indeed, the margin could have been even wider had the Magpies converted their scoring chances. With Dane Swan turning in another topnotch performance, Collingwood strangled the Bulldogs at every opportunity, denying them the time and space to create. The Hawks dominated the inside-50 count 29-18 in the first half but their inability to convert that into scoreboard pressure – they instead registered a disastrous 1.11 for the half – allowed Fremantle to take a 23-point lead into the main break. The Dockers further put their stamp on the match with six goals in the third term before taking their foot off the pedal in the last. at the last change. Victoria among favourites

The second T20 Champions League kicks off this week and, of the southern domestic sides, the Victoria Bushrangers are the bestplaced to beat the cashedup Indian franchises to the £1.6m winner’s purse.

Victoria will have an axe to grind against Bangalore, with batsman Cameron White, the Bushrangers’ captain, contractually obligated to play for his Indian Premier League team instead of his Australian side. “Bangalore had the choice on the basis of contract. I told them I wanted to play for Victoria but they were not too keen to release me,” White said last week, before backing Victoria to thrive under the leadership of David Hussey. “Victoria are amazingly capable. We have won four

out of the last five T20 tournaments in Australia. My place will be taken by someone equally capable. Victoria will be hard to beat.” Certainly, Victoria boast their share of players with international experience, including Brad Hodge, Andrew McDonald, Dirk Nannes, Clint McKay and Peter Siddle. South Australia are the other Australian side, while New Zealand’s Central Districts and South Africa’s Warriors and Lions are also taking part.

Josh Hazlewood, 19, Steve Smith, 21 and Peter George, 23, will head to India, indicating that the selectors are looking to usher in the next generation of Australian players. “While it was disappointing to draw the series in England against Pakistan, the squad reflects the good performances of the team over the last 12 months,” chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said.

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting believes the new domestic one-day format – where teams’ innings will be split into two blocks of 20 overs and then 25 overs – will hamper the World Cup preparations of fringe players vying for a spot in the Australian side. “It’ll be OK for the guys that are in the national side, we’ll probably play another 12 or 13 one-dayers before the World Cup,” Ponting said. “The guys on the fringe that are playing domestic cricket won’t play any 50-over games really until that World Cup. Probably for the young spinners around Australia in particular, they’re going to find it difficult this summer.”

Australian selectors recalled 21-year-old batsman Phil Hughes when they announced the 15-man squad for next month’s two-Test series against India, after injury prevented the opener from touring England earlier this year. Despite Australia playing out an underwhelming 1-1 draw against Pakistan during the past English summer, no players were dropped, with under-pressure batsmen Marcus North and Mike Hussey both retained and keeper Tim Paine still filling in for the injured Brad Haddin. Arsenal had been keen for Schwarzer, 37, to make the move to north London, but the transfer window expired last Tuesday, bringing the curtain down on what could be Schwarzer’s last chance to play in the Champions League. Evidently, the failed transfer remains a source of irritation for Schwarzer. “I would rather not say anything, I would really rather not say anything because otherwise I might say something wrong,” he said after the loss to Switzerland. “At the end of the day you have to get on with your work and coming away with the national team was a great relief for me really.” Australia were perhaps

THE QUOTES

Surrendering soft penalty corners cost Australia’s women’s hockey team – the Hockeyroos – during their World Cup match against the Netherlands, going down 4-1 to the world No 1 team in Argentina. With the Netherlands scoring three of their four goals from penalty corners, that proved the difference. Knowing a win would go a long way to securing a spot in the semi-finals, Australia were aggressive early, with quick passes and constant movement placing the Dutch defence under pressure. However, the Netherlands soon demonstrated why they are the top-ranked team, scoring a goal against the

run of play to take the lead at the 10-minute mark. Australia levelled, but two further goals from corners saw the Netherlands pull clear. “In the end, the penalty corners were the difference, it was disappointing from our point of view, but if you give away soft penalty corners to supposedly one of the best in the world, they are going to score goals,” coach Frank Murray said. “I’m obviously disappointed, I thought our first half we played reasonably well but our second half was not so good.” Australia were to face New Zealand on Sunday, but their final pool match – against Germany on Monday – loomed as a virtual elimination final.

“Have not had face lift or any work done to face, training hard and lost 5kg. Yes have had teeth whitened. No have not had hair transplant, have regrown my own hair with laser therapy!” Via Twitter, Shane Warne addresses rumours he’s had some work done. Thank for sharing. “I’ll gain a lot of friends but I’m also losing a lot of close ones as well. I’m leaving a lot behind, too. It’s only a two-year deal so hopefully I can head back down there down the track.” Greg Inglis (below) fully intends to return to Melbourne once his twodeal with Brisbane expires.

With no Melbourne Storm to contend with, the window is wide open for another side to break from an even field WORDS TOM STURROCK PANTHERS Overview: Bolted up the table this season after finishing 11th in 2009. Frank Pritchard and Michael Jennings give the Panthers enough bite for them to go deep into the finals, despite a patchy run at the end of the regular season. The star: Michael Gordon – the league’s leading scorer has won Penrith several games with his goal-kicking but has also been impressive enough in general play to have started on a wing for NSW. Prediction: Eliminated third week.

On the straight and narrow: Todd Carney

DRAGONS Overview: They ran out of gas last season but have been the benchmark for most of 2010. Coach Wayne Bennett has the Dragons ready to win a first title and the return of favourite son Mark Gasnier means a fairytale finish beckons. The star: Brett Morris – the 23-year-old back has had another prolific season and, with a premium on game-breakers in finals, the Kiama flyer could be the local hero if the Dragons go all the way. Prediction: Premiers.

TIGERS Overview: Woefully inconsistent since their 2005 premiership, the Tigers have been big improvers this season, fusing equal parts grit and dash to produce some of the season’s most eye-catching football. The star: Benji Marshall – the Kiwi pivot has been the main man for the Tigers for years but now has enough support for his side to challenge. Marshall’s skills and vision are absolutely world-class. Prediction: Runners-up. TITANS Overview: They’ve had their ups and downs throughout the season but strung some wins together in the final third of the season. After choking in last season’s finals, the Titans have momentum for a serious assault on the premiership. The star: Scott Prince – the star half-back has the big-game experience and creativity to be a key player in the Titans’ campaign. He brings others into the game and his best football is crucial to the Titans firing. Prediction: Eliminated third week.

WARRIORS Overview: Another side to vault from last year’s bottom half into contention. Capable of muscular, dynamic football at home, the Warriors have built momentum at the tail-end of the season but will need to deliver away from their Auckland stronghold. The star: Manu Vatuvei – has become a cult figure for the Warriors and looms as a player who could make the finals his own if he lights up. The gigantic winger will be the player opposition sides focus on stopping. Prediction: Eliminated second week.

The star: Josh Dugan – he’s only 20, but the Raiders’ full-back has quickly emerged as one of the league’s most exciting players. The recession hasn’t stopped Australians changing jobs, with recent Australian Bureau of Statistics data showing one in six workers started work with a new employer during the year to February 2010.

any employers in New Zealand and Australia that moved quickly to lay off staff during the economic downturn now believe they made too many people redundant, according to recruitment firm Hudson. The firm says its survey of 605 employers and 1690 employees – 21 per cent of which were in New Zealand – indicated that 84 per cent felt they had axed too many jobs. Hudson’s general manager,

Marc Burrage, said many employers now found themselves under-staffed or without the right talent. “Most employers we spoke to said that, in retrospect, they wished they hadn’t made the cuts they had during the downturn,” he added.

f your time in London is coming to an end you’re probably thinking about all the barbecues and beaches back home. But sooner rather than later, you’re going to need a job, so start the search in the UK.

MAKE CONTACT Get in touch with a recruitment company that has a branch Down Under, or works closely with recruiters there. Alex Flowerdew of HCL International explains that recruiters can be useful contacts. “Some of the larger international firms can refer you directly to their offices in Australia and New Zealand and set up interviews from the UK, or as soon as you get back home,” Flowerdew says. “If you need help with your CV, covering letter or preparing for an interview, a recruiter can give you good, free advice.”

BE REALISTIC According to Scott Stacey, the managing director of WH Marks Sattin, a reality check about how things stand back home can be crucial. “Many people return with unrealistic expectations of their worth in their home markets, either in terms of the roles they are suited to, or their salary expectations,” Stacey says. “Talk to Australian specialist recruiters in your area as well as UK recruiters – and make sure they do have a global network and are actually getting your details to Australia.” It is also important to build relationships with recruiters, so find someone who you can trust, Stacey advises. “Global recruiters will generally only be interested in candidates with professional qualifications, as it is difficult to place people who have only done bar work. But if you have good skills and a good resume, most will help you from the UK.”

NETWORK As usual, who you know can be as crucial as what you know when finding a job. “Speak to people in your industry in the UK – they may well have contacts Down Under,” Flowerdew says. “Use professional

MAKING THE MOVE

Be proactive: find a recruiter with contacts Down Under

After six years working in the UK, Mike Baxter made the move back to New Zealand last July. Baxter, who works in software consultancy and development in Auckland, managed to line a job up before leaving the UK. The job market in New Zealand for IT staff is quite strong because “there is a

shortage of experienced IT professionals, meaning good jobs are available”, but Baxter has a word of warning for returning Kiwis. “You need to be prepared to do more. The UK tends to be an easier working life, and NZ employers want more for their money.”

The Disasters Emergency Committee has praised the UK public for “leading the way and shaming politicians across the world” with their generosity. Donations to help Pakistan’s flood victims, which include 20 million homeless and the families of 1600 dead, have now reached £40m.

More than 50 academics from leading universities as well as 15 other professionals in law, social policy and economics signed a letter which stated “that the co-ordinated policies of the Australian Labor Government have prevented the Australian economy from a deep recession”.

Why did you leave London?

I left London after two years because my visa expired. The thought of going home was hard as my Scottish boyfriend and I were both loving our London lifestyle. How did you deal with London’s high cost of living?

I saved for years before I went away, but I somehow managed to spend $15,000 in four months … oops. Compared to Australia, it was easier to eat on the cheap and days out exploring the city never cost that much. What were your major expenses back home?

My Scotsman moved to Australia with me, so minus a few boxes of belongings, we basically had to set ourselves up from scratch. It was hard going at first, but we’re back on track now.

ARE THEY REALLY WORTH IT? Football’s transfer deadline passed last week, so we took a look at the history of the transfer record. Thing’s have taken a turn for the ridiculous since 1893 … » Scotsman Willie Groves (£7.7m now) in 1982 and sold broke records when he moved to Aston Villa from West Bromwich Albion for a fee of £100 in 1893 – the equivalent of £10,500 by today’s standards. » Barcelona bought Diego Maradona (pictured) for £3m

him to Napoli two years later for £5m. A tidy profit. » Things got really silly last year, when Real Madrid not only bought Kaká for £56m, but also Cristiano Ronaldo for £80m. They still couldn’t beat Barcelona though, could they?

If you’re heading home, make sure you stock up on reading material for the journey in advance. Buying books at the airport or in a high street shop is expensive, despite frequent offers that stores hold. Plan ahead and buy reading material from Amazon – you can pick up virtually new copies for as little as 1p, meaning you will only cover the cost of postage. I’ve heard I can take this money home with me, but I’m guessing they’re not going to let me have anything in cash. Once you have left the UK for good and are back in Australia you will need to find a superannunation fund that has QROPS status (Qualifying Recognised Overseas

Pension Scheme). The pension providers will then be able to arrange the transfer on your behalf. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to cash it out. There are a list of schemes on the hmrc website – just search for QROPS at hmrc. gov.uk. You should aim to have the transfer completed within six months after leaving the UK. It is definitely worth consolidating your pension arrangements and will be easier to administer in the future.

Dartmoor ENGLAND

RIDE-TO-BE I’ve come here to experience the eerie prehistoric landscape for myself, joining one of Skaigh Stables’ pub rides, which promise a hack of “about 20 miles, with a stop at a pub for lunch”. It sounds perfect, it’s just a shame that I’m halfway to Devon when I realise I can’t remember how to sit on a horse, never mind ride one. Luckily, my group is more experienced than me and reminds me how to hold the reins and sit properly. It’s tricky at first and I spend the morning obeying countless instructions but it’s worth persevering as riding is apparently the best way to see Dartmoor’s scenery. You cover more ground than walking and the ponies are sure-footed and tire less easily than humans on the rocky terrain.

TRAVEL

W

indswept, rugged and moody, Dartmoor is the bad boy of all the UK’s national parks. Unlike the pretty Lake District or the proud, high land of the Peaks, Devon’s famous moorland is best known for its brooding skies and rocky, gorse-strewn wilderness. Like any bad boy, it’s the moor’s edgy reputation and untamed looks that make it so alluring. Covering an area the size of London (but with 280 times fewer people), Dartmoor is the UK’s largest area of wilderness, chiefly known for three things: a prison, wild ponies and the Sherlock Holmes story The Hound of the Baskervilles, where a hellhound chases people across the moor until they die of fright. It doesn’t sound like the most welcoming place but visitors have been attracted here for hundreds of years. Its first inhabitants – up to 4000 years ago – made use of the large stones found here to build UK Bronze Age communities and there are more ruins here than in any other UK national park.

Rugged: get back to nature in Dartmoor

BOOZE BREAK We stop for lunch at the Northmore Arms in Throwleigh, a village that borders the moor and is straight out of Postman Pat. After lunch and a pint or two of top country cider I’m in a stupor of good food and raring to get back on the horse. I’ve forgetten my nerves and just enjoy the scenery. Or so I think. The other riders have decided I’m ready to canter. Fear makes my brain seize and I cling on for dear life. But it’s wonderful. The horse’s hooves pound the stones and my heart thunders as I throw my head up and feel the wind in my face. What a buzz! END OF THE ROAD The day flies by as good days tend to. As we turn back to the stables the sun comes out, almost as if it knows this is the finale. We spend the end of our five-hour marathon ride wandering the ridge of a hill, watching tiny patches of cloud cast shadows like handprints on the patchwork of fields below us. It’s the perfect end to my West Country romance with this moorland bad boy.

BEDDING DOWN WILD CAMPING To really get a feel for Dartmoor, try wild camping. A visitor’s right to bed down on the moor is enshrined in law, as long as you keep off private land and only ‘bivouac’ (the technical term) for a maximum of two nights. The National Park Authority website (dartmoor-npa.gov.uk) has a map of the areas where wild camping is allowed. Responsible souls will already be familiar with the instruction ‘Take nothing, leave nothing’ but in addition the site warns campers to: ‘Take all litter home. Guard against risk of fire. Ensure you do not pollute streams or rivers and avoid disturbing wildlife.’ Apart from these hard and fast rules, the quality of the experience is up to the individual. Some people hike deep into the moor to pitch a tent, while others prefer to stay relatively near to roads or other civilisation. Wherever you decide to pitch, it’s important that you have access to clean water and, for when nature calls, take a shovel.

TNT Weekender Bordeaux FRANCE

The chic French city of Bordeaux is famous for its wine and a trip here should always be accompanied by a nice red. While the vineyards and wines of the Bordeaux region are world famous, the city itself is gorgeous, with wide boulevards, neoclassical architecture, beautiful parks and a thriving student population.

riverfront esplanade and admire the Pont du Pierre – a bridge built during Napoleon’s reign. It has 17 arches, one for each of his victories.

BEST OF THE REST Musée d’Aquitaine provides an interesting look at the city’s history and art buffs should not miss the Musée des Beaux-Arts. All the permanent exhibits at Bordeaux’s museums have free entry.

TNT Images

HEADLINE ATTRACTION Take time to explore the city before heading out to the vineyards. Start in the north at Jardin Public, where you can check out the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle or Jardin Botanique. Only a short walk from the public garden is the Musée d’art Contemporain. Stop for a photo at the Monument aux Girondins before heading past the Grand Théâtre and down Rue SteCatherine (the city’s main shopping precinct). Take a stroll along Bordeaux’s 4km-long

Bordeaux has a thriving restaurant scene with hip eateries and lively bistros. Seafood features prominently on the menu, and you’re also likely to see Aquitaine caviar, which is farmed locally. Check out the dining precincts around Place du Parlement and Place St-Pierre.

OUT OF TOWN Wine region St Emilion is worth an overnight stay. The fortified medieval town is 35km east of Bordeaux and has a

huge subterranean church, cut out from a single piece of rock, and eerie catacombs.

TRY THE LOCAL TIPPLE Even if you don’t like red wine you should still make time to visit the wine-growing region, as it is such an integral part of the area. The Bordeaux Tourism Office runs themed one-day tours to the nearby regions, including St Emilion and the Médoc. Alternatively hire a car and explore the region yourself. Tasting courses, which last from two hours to three-days, are also popular.

AND A RANDOM FACT Bordeaux’s city centre is transformed into a car-free zone on the first Sunday of the month, when the streets are abuzz with cyclists, rollerbladers and outdoor fitness classes. Make the most of it.

t’s just above freezing, damp and dark, the kind of night when many would stay indoors or head to a cosy pub. Instead, we’re heading for the Reykjavik Art Museum to see Brighton band Metronomy, who are just one of the many artists at the Iceland Airwaves Festival. Around us are young, mostly blonde, long-legged locals who don’t seem to feel the cold in retro dresses and short-sleeved vintage jackets. I feel as if we’re in Shoreditch rather than in Iceland’s capital.

Oh yes: Danish band Oh No Ono will play this year

Once inside we grab plastic cups of Viking beer and push to the front of the stage as the band, sporting some bizarre costumes, begin their act.

BEST OF THE FEST Iceland Airwaves is an annual weekend music festival held in Reykjavik every October, and its aim is to showcase upcoming music not only from Iceland but from around the world. This year, acts include London’s Bombay Bicycle Club, Denmark’s Oh No Ono, and The Antlers from the US. Bigger names also take part – previous groups include The Shins and Hot Chip, while Robyn has been announced for 2010. Festival venues span across the capital, from museums and galleries to clubs and pubs. We headbang to Icelandic metal outfit Klink in the moshpit of Sodoma, dance to the ’60s beat of American band The Postelles at Idno, usually a picturesque restaurant overlooking the City Pond, before shuffling on to the crowded dance floor of nightclub Nasa to hear electro outfit FM Belfast. Beztu by the harbour is one of the best for late-night munchies, or Nonnabiti in the city centre serves meaty subs. Of course, it also means that bars stay open all night, and when we’ve had enough of the crowds, we take pleasure in a bottle of beer and the jukebox of Bar 11, where patrons include a grey-bearded man in a black cape and a couple of girls dressed as cheerleaders.

HANGOVER PARTY The next day, after a much-needed lie-in, we’re on the bus to the Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most visited attractions. The hems of the hanging scarves have wonderful wiggling diagonals, which descend from the blown out highlights at the top so they appear to come from the heavens. The use of

the large expanse of wall to fill most of the shot has emphasised the narrow corridor. A beautiful use of space and colour. HOT TIP: You don’t have to cram your image with details. Sometimes large areas of blank space can create atmosphere and emphasise your message more effectively than a busy composition.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR PHOTOS STAND OUT

THEME: SHOPPING Window Shopping, Strasbourg, France by Sarah Ullrich

Reflections in windows can add an extra dimension to your images as they show two views layered on top of each other. Sarah used this technique to show this slick shopping scene.

TRAVEL

WHY THIS WORKS:

69

1 The high contrast checks of the outfit and shiny black bag give a clear focal point. 2 The face does not cross over the scene too intrusively, which prevents confusion. 3 Black and white suits the cosmopolitan image and graphic design. 4 The model’s eye, mannequin’s face and horizon of the scene are all on the rule of thirds.

HOT TIPS: 1 Shoot at an angle to avoid getting yourself in the shot. 2 Turn off your flash. Using a flash with glass rarely works. 4 An Image with a high contrast, mixed with a low contrast image, usually work best. The high contrast image will be the main interest, while the low contrast will provide atmosphere. 5 Ensure that the reflection relates to the subject in message and composition.

Q

A

Puffins are like penguins but better as they can fly and also have technicolour beaks. You can buy puffin meat in supermarkets in Iceland and by all accounts it is very tasty. Should you wish to view them while they are alive you don’t have to go as far as Iceland. Several spots in the UK, including Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel and Skomer Island off the coast off Pembrokeshire in west Wales, to try. Mid-June to mid-July is the best time to see them in really large numbers, though they will be present before and after that too. Both of these places are fantastic, wild sites that you need to go to some lengths to get to. Lundy can be reached by a ferry from Ilfracombe and Skomer from Martin’s Haven. Of the two, Ilfracombe is easier to reach by public transport – you get to Barnstaple by train and then hop on a bus. You’ll also find puffins in the Orkney and Shetland Islands that are a lot of fun to get to, but require a much longer journey.

Now you can call me old-fashioned, Octavia Ski Bunny, but I reckon in exchange for your free accommodation and days spent swishing down snowy alpine cols you can expect to have to do a bit of hard graft, and there are worse jobs to have than having to serve up hearty fare for fellow ski enthusiasts. Some of them may even, as you state, have unusual dietary requirements. Some of them may smell. Who knows? Who cares! You’ll have the chance to spend a season in the mountains doing what you love. Life isn’t always a rose garden but this sounds like a pretty fair exchange to me, even if you have to do a tonne of housework on top of it. As you say, you haven’t learnt French, or another language, so your options are restricted. What else could you do? You could try getting some work with tour companies, or peruse the many ski season employment agencies out there. I would cast the net wide, start looking now, and also start learning some French. Or you could work your socks off in the UK, see if you can scrape together enough for a room and a sack of

porridge for the winter and try to get by not working, but I suspect you’ll end up with empty pockets and scurvy pretty soon. And that won’t win you many friends on the dancefloors of Tignes.

New rules for adventurers New Zealand is upgrading its adventure tourism rules after a campaign by a British dad whose 21-year-old daughter drowned while riding on a body board in the Kawarau River Gorge near Queenstown in 2008. Prime Minister John Key launched a review which has recommended that adventure tourism companies sign up to a compulsory register and enrol in a voluntary safety auditing scheme. But the dad Chris Jordan said that the proposed new

regulations don’t go far enough. “A voluntary check is not good enough,” he said. “Nor has anything been done with regard to punishing companies that don’t come up to standard.” Between 2004 and 2009, 39 people died in adventure tourism accidents in NZ.

said to be the most chirpy. Travellers who holiday with friends, or made new friends while away, were happiest. Unsurprisingly, good weather was important in helping to achieve maximum satisfaction while on holiday. The guarantee of sun – or snow if on a ski or snowboard holiday – was a vital factor in holiday enjoyment. And people who booked holidays a long time in advance were happiest. “People who have booked ahead well in advance have the satisfaction, and some might say smugness, of knowing exactly where they are going and when,” psychologist Cliff Arnall said. “Telling other people about nice things you are going to do is a crucial part of boosting selfesteem and achieving social status.”

NEW TRAVEL GUIDES Time Out has launched a brand new collection of pocket-sized Shortlist city guides for 2011, including Barcelona, Paris, Rome and New York. The guides cost £7.99. Meanwhile Rough Guides has recently published the fifth edition of its guide to Cuba (£14.99).

My favourite place in the world is ... The Tibetan grassland, due to its spectacular scenery. My most memorable travel

experience was … travelling around Vietnam by motorbike. It was amazing! The next trip on my travel wishlist is … Peru and Argentina. I always pack … handy wet wipes and a sense of adventure! My guilty travel pleasure is … a pair of heels always ends up in my backpack. My top travel tip is ... try everything once.

From the wildlife-rich Amazon to the guerilla infested Darien Gap, we pick five of the best jungle treks WORDS MARK EVELEIGH

Jungle treks ADVENTURE TRAVEL

BEST FOR … WILDLIFE WATCHERS Where: Madagascar. Trek description: More than 80 per cent of the wildlife on Madagascar, the world’s fourth-largest island, cannot be found elsewhere. Despite heavy logging, huge swathes of rainforest remain in the north and down the east coast. Montagne d’Ambre in the far north is an intriguing mountain wilderness, home to some of the weirdest-looking creatures on our planet. Watch out for: One of the worst facets of Montagne d’Ambre’s incredible bio-

diversity is that it boasts 21 different types of mosquito, including the voracious malaria-carrying anopheles. How to plan: The French colonials did a thorough job of mapping the wilderness and you can buy detailed tactical pilotage charts at good map shops, like Stanfords’ in Covent Garden (stanfords.co.uk). Getting around this immense island can be time-consuming unless you fly, but a road trip to the north is guaranteed to be an adventure. Book it: Cox & Kings (coxandkings.co.uk) organises group and independent tours.

When to go: December to March is cyclone season in the Indian Ocean. Getting there: Flights from London to Antananarivo start from £749. Visas: All foreign visitors must apply for a visa prior to arrival. A one-month visa costs US$30. Currency: £1 = 2.98 Madagascar Ariary. Language: Malagasy and French. Going out: A beer costs about 60p.

BEST FOR … CULTURE VULTURES Where: Borneo. Trek description: While Sarawak, Sabah

Nepal is the pinnacle of the world’s mountain adventure locations. From Kathmandu, plan anything from a sedate two-day stroll to a full-blown attack on Everest. Discover a wealth of adventurous pursuits in South Africa, with its vast national parks and dramatic coastline. Dive with great white sharks in the morning, lunch at a vineyard and trek among mountain zebras in the afternoon. The Australian Outback is sadly overlooked by the majority of people who head Down Under. Explore ‘beyond the black stump’ and travel up through the great Red Centre for one of the greatest adventure travel experiences of your life. Indonesia boasts an estimated 17,000 islands, each with its own unique identity. From Sumatra to Irian Jaya, Bali to Borneo, you could spend a lifetime island hopping here and still not get bored. Full of the intrigue of nomadic desert tribes the Sahara is a surprisingly varied region, offering some of the most challenging landscapes on earth.

(October to February) when many roads (not to mention jungle paths and rivers) become impassable. Getting there: Fly to Pontianak via Jakarta. Visas: Buy a 30-day visa for US$30 on arrival. Trek inland and to attempt to trek across the border between you’ll find friendly Dayak villages and Panama and Colombia would be potentially longhouses where life has remained suicidal. However, with careful planning virtually unchanged for hundreds of years. and good guides it’s possible to trek from Watch out for: Thankfully headhunting coast to coast on the Panamanian side. (taking a person’s head after killing them) is a thing of the past. Poisonous snakes are Watch out for: Anyone you meet deep in the Darien jungle is likely to be a drug not uncommon, but leeches will be your trafficker, a guerrilla, a bandit … or a mix most persistent attacker. of all three! How to plan: If you’re heading into How to plan: Thorough planning is uncharted jungle, maps will be of little essential but keep the exact details as use. It is possible to carry out an in-depth secret as possible. Angel Murillo, who has trekked through the region many times, is a good contact. See jamurillo.com. When to go: Dry season is mid-December to mid-April but the Caribbean gets sporadic rainfall all year round. Getting there: Fly from London to Panama City from about £595, then take a ‘bush-hopper flight’ to the San Blas islands to begin your trek. Visas: Australians, Kiwis and South Africans need to buy a US$5 tourist card for a 90-day stay. Currency: £1 = 1.56 US Dollars (official currency in Panama). Language: Spanish. Going out: A beer is about 60p.

BEST FOR … RIVER RATS Where: Amazon. Trek description: The world’s greatest river and its biggest jungle is a must-see for adventurous travellers. You may not be made of the same mettle as Ed Stafford, who recently completed a walk down the entire length of the Amazon, but Manaus, the Amazonian ‘capital’, offers river trips and treks to suit all tastes. Watch out for: Among its cuter inhabitants, such as otters and pink dolphins, the Amazon also boasts piranhas, caiman and candiru – horrific little fish that swim up the urinary tract of unsuspecting trekkers. How to plan: Tour operators in Manaus will help plan excursions to the Amazon. Book it: Find a local tour operator in Manaus or book before you go through a specialist operator, such as Journey Latin America (journeylatinamerica.co.uk). When to go: Low season (May to September) is cheaper and less crowded. Getting there: Return flights from London to Manaus start at £749. Visas: Aussies and Kiwis need a visa.

BEST FOR … GOING APE Where: Uganda. Trek Description: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a trans-frontier park that shares borders with Rwanda and the Congo (DLC). This central African highland jungle and bamboo forest is home to some of the last big bands of gorillas. Watch out for: Only attempt a border trek along the DRC with armed rangers. How to plan: Mgahinga is hard to access without a self-drive 4WD so arrange a tour in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, which has more tourism infrastructure. Book it: Ku Tunza Travel (kutunza.com). When to go: Uganda’s climate is balmy all year round. Getting there: Global Village (globalvillage-travel.com) offers return flights to Kampala from £558. Visas: All visitors require visas (available at all major land borders and Entebbe airport. A three-month visa costs US$30. Currency: £1 = 3,000 Uganda Shillings. Language: English. Going out: A beer costs about 30p.

NEXT WEEK: CYCLING IN POLAND

Discover neat vodka, gorgeous landscapes and hip cities by bike

TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR OWN JUNGLE TREK Research thoroughly in advance and try to learn the local language. The relevant Lonely Planet is the best first stop and Google Earth provides a real-life picture of the sort of terrain you will be going through.

1

Hire reliable and experienced local guides through a headman where possible – village honour often counts for far more than local law enforcement in many developing countries.

2

Haggle hard to fix the guide’s price before departure, but let it be known there is a big bonus held back if you are happy with the experience.

3

Log your planned route into a GPS but also waypoint potential escape routes for use in case of injury or illness. Allow family and friends to follow your progress in real time through the remotest terrain using a spot tracking device (findmespot.com). More importantly, its SOS rescue feature could potentially save your life.

4

5

Travel light. You can get by with a lightweight jungle hammock and two changes of clothing: one for trekking (you are sweaty and dirty within 10 minutes anyway) and one for sleeping (never underestimate the benefit of a good night’s sleep). Ensure your equipment and footwear is up to the job and allow extra space for a good medical kit.

teddy with the name Dougal on him, however, I think the tag has come off. There is a lot of sentimental value to this teddy so if you have found him, please let me know. Amy. See tntmagazine.com/seeking. Cheryl: I can’t believe the great London game is already over for you. We’ve had a ball – from sinking vodka shots in Russia to throwing back pitchers of Pimm’s in the sun at the Boat Race. It’s been a huge party! Good luck back home. The crew at Eastlock Road! To the Saffa boy who vomited all over himself in Soho last week: You cost yourself a root.

I’ve never been so digusted in my life. And I found a vomit fleck in my hair when I got home. Control your drinking, dickwad. Janey. Lando: Hope you don’t contract any exotic viruses on your way back to Australia. Make sure you exercise duty of care. And just hold fire on that before you put it all in the blender. Having worked your way up from sales support to the big chair, your fling with the marketing manager could only be described as “high-

risk”, but rest assured that it will survive as an hilarious anecdote for years to come. Take it easy back in Cloud City. Cheers, TRS. Mr Jones: I can’t believe that after all these years we’re back together again. Second time lucky, hey? And practice makes perfect anyway, so now we know which buttons to push, and which ones to stay clear of. I love you more than ever before, and never ever want to lose you again. Yours forever, Amanda. South American looking for a cool guy to paint London red with :-): Hey, I’m just a normal

girl with loads of sense of humour, rather intelligent, who likes to have a laugh, meet new people, explore new places, travel and much more. Looking for a cool, easygoing, down-to-earth guy to have a coffee or dinner with and see how it goes. You should be tall, 26-30 years, if you’re into sports – great (I only watch them sorry!), open minded, fun, willing to dance the night away, or maybe just stay in and have a great conversation. If you think that sounds like you, or have a friend who would be

perfect for it, then email me at belleame@live.co.uk and we can take it from there. I’m sure you won’t get bored :-). Belle Ame. To my keyboard: You’ve taken some serious punishment over the years as I worked my fingers to the bone (well, kind of) bashing out endless streams of words. Now you can have a rest before the next geezer gets a go. You know who. Into a new decade there Rock Stur: Can an old dog be taught

new tricks? Or are there enough in the bag already? Smash it. Dan The Man: So you think you’re leaving us, huh? Well, we all know you’ll come back for more in 10 years time you’re the human TNT boomerang remember. But who can blame ya? The Queen, the music, the people, Where In The World, house cricket, and all the intense and random discussions - what’s there not to love?! Thanks for all the good times mate, and wish you all the best for back home. See ya later, The TNT crew. Lost Chef Knives: After a long week at work I left my chef knives stupidly on the bus. This was Thursday, August 19 on the number 11 to Fulham. At the final stop at around 4.45pm I got off and left my knives in the knife roll on the upper deck of the bus. These knives are more than just valuable in terms of money to me and if anyone may have seen them or know anything I would love to hear. The roll had my contact details on it too.
