Assange is a nerdy sex god!
I have to own up to a very teenage, unintellectual obsession with Julian Assange. It’s something about the mix of geeky subversion, power and that slightly wild look in his eyes. I’ve been quizzing my mates and find opinion as to his sex appeal is vastly divided. Some people think he’s creepy; for others he is the nerdy sex god of the year. Assange himself is certainly not publicity-shy, especially for someone involved in such a ‘covert’ work line of work, and has provided ample leather jacket-wearing poses for me use as screensavers. I know he’s a crusading champion of freedom of information, blah, blah, blah, but personally I just like his hair. Lucie, via email

I was surprised to see TNT allowing Heather Mills to spread her pernicious support for veganism (TNT 1424, Dec 13). Most of the folk I know think veganism is an eating disorder, in many ways on par with anorexia and bulimia. Depending on your beliefs, if evolution, or our creator, had designed us to eat only plantbased food then surely we wouldn’t have the kind of teeth that we do, and we wouldn’t have a bowel the length it is? A healthy diet is really all about eating a range of different foods – meat included – regularly, and in moderation. Veganism is fanatical, leading to problems around eating in social situations. Just ask yourself who wants to eat in the company of someone who can’t go to this or that restaurant, or who can’t eat this or can’t eat that. So no,

TOO SILLY? I’m an avid reader, but have found the ‘Silly Buggers’ page really offensive over the past few weeks (1421 and 1423). I am not here to preach or judge, but I really feel that there are more than enough immoral magazines out there
and there is no need to drop the standard of your publication. I am a South African citizen who has seen how AIDS can ruin lives and families. December 1 marked World Aids Day, there is a huge need to educate people about being faithful to their partners or otherwise to abstaining completely from promiscuous behaviour. I therefore find it really irresponsible of TNT, which has a large following, to publish such articles. Keep up your great work otherwise! Frank Van Velzen, via email

PETER PAN CUP SWIMMING RACE FREE WHAT: Just as you’re opening your Christmas stocking, a bunch of hardy souls will be diving into the icy waters of the Serpentine, preserving a tradition that dates back to 1864. WHEN: December 25. DO IT BECAUSE: Honestly, there’s no good reason why you’d want to take part, unless you’re a complete masochist. But getting along to watch should be good for a laugh, and a brisk morning stroll through Hyde Park will help you build up your thirst for a few flagons of mulled wine.

Vast: National Gallery
Capital idea: National Gallery Even from across the other side of Trafalgar Square, beyond the ornate fountains and the hordes of tourists, the grand facade of the National Gallery draws the eye. There are few more imposing reminders of how seriously London takes its status as one of the world’s cultural capitals. In contrast to the Tate Modern on Southbank, with its hard lines and sleek, stark interior, the National Gallery has a more classical feel; with its cavernous, corniced
ceilings, spiralling stairwells and echoing corridors, it’s everything a proper gallery should be. The major exhibition at the moment showcases vistas of Venice by Italian master Canaletto. But even if you just want to stroll around the regular collection, it’s vast enough to keep you busy for several hours. TS

I
f the fact that Christmas Day is looming has passed you by – and you’re still thinking you’ve got plenty of time to prepare, think again. You’ve got a lot of leg work to do, but it’s possible to plan your festive celebrations, and do your Christmas shopping, in a matter of days. Just follow our survival guide.
Dig out the retro games
Our friends at vouchercodes.co.uk have put together a list of retailers that are pushing delivery dates to the limit – such as Warehouse, which delivers on Xmas Eve if you book by midday on Tuesday. Check out their website for full details.
THE GREETINGS You’re rapidly running out of time to post, so send e-cards instead. Turn your loved ones into dancing snowmen on JibJab.com or download the Super Dance Elf app and create an iPhone card using a picture of an elf and your friend’s face. To post cards, order from moonpig.com or funkypigeon.

THE GIFTS If all else fails, you’ve got to get this bit right. People will forget if you don’t have a turkey, but your other half won’t be happy that you forgot their gift. Lots of shops on Oxford Street are open on Xmas Eve, but, if you’re really strapped for time, some online retailers are still taking orders for pre-Christmas delivery. Shop on amazon.co.uk until Dec 23, but only on selected items and at a price. Harriet Webber, of Party Planners (party-planners.co.uk), recommends taking a look at allthingsgifts.co.uk – where you can opt for next-day delivery until Wednesday. “It’s an amazing website full of quirky little gifts, especially for men who are notoriously hard to buy for,” she says. If you order today, Funkyhampers.com has themed gift packages. Also try redletterdays.co.uk for anything from spa packages to parachute jumps – you can opt to have an evoucher sent to the recipient, so no need for delivery!

com, where some cards cost less than £2 and are delivered in the UK for free. But do it today.
THE BOOZE Christmas just isn’t the same without some mulled wine and bubbles. Nakedwines.com is still guaranteeing next-day delivering on orders placed up until Dec 23 as is www.beerritz.co.uk.
You won’t be “ forgiven for not buying gifts
”
However, Virgin Wines (virginwines. co.uk) has a deadline of today for deliveries before Xmas. Once you’ve ordered your booze, don’t make the mistake of forgetting the ice.
THE GRUB If you have never tried buying your groceries online, now is the time.
Cheers! The hard work will pay off
All the major supermarkets deliver the next day if you order by 12pm – but you may have missed their Christmas slots. Harriet Webber recommends Waitrose’s online arm, Ocado. “They put amazing Christmas packages together such as a vegetable medley, where they’ll send over a whole selection of veggies in one package, plus they have turkeys basted and ready to go and canapes,” she says. If you are roasting a turkey, text its weight in kilos to a texting service on 64446, which will weigh up your cooking times and how many it will feed.

TRANSPORT On Christmas Eve and Boxing Day Tubes operate a Sunday service. This will be the same for buses, but they will stop running near midnight. The last Overground services will depart at about 9pm. There are no TfL services on Christmas Day. Boxing Day services are on a reduced Sunday timetable.
TAXIS THE ENTERTAINMENT Don’t kill a festive atmosphere by putting everyone in front of the TV. Either get on to iTunes fast to download a bunch of Xmas songs – or go retro. “Puzzles, Trivial Persuit and the gameshow based games are great,” Webber says. “Or charades.” THE DECORATIONS Fulham Palace Garden Centre, Fulham, may still have trees left. If that fails, cheat. “If nothing else, candles, candles, candles,” says Webber. “They are the most flattering light you can provide for a festive gathering and one of the cheapest decorations around.”
DON’T forget gifts
CHRISTMAS SURVIVAL GUIDE
GOING OUT Very few pubs are open on Christmas Day, but we’ve tracked them down – and they’re serving lunch. Thatched house, Ravenscourt Park (thatchedhouse.com), Windmill Hotel, Clapham Common (windmillclapham.co.uk), The Ship, Wandsworth (theship.co.uk) and The House, Islington (thehouseislington.com).
To book a black cab, ring the 24-hour One-Number Taxi (0871 871 8710) or hail one in the street. There’s a £4 surcharge on Christmas Day. You can book a licensed minicab through the 24-hour line (020 7222 1234) or use the Cabwise service. Text the word HOME to 60835 and you’ll be sent telephone numbers for two licensed minicab operators in the area.
POST The latest recommended posting dates for Christmas is today for first class post so get a wriggle on! Special delivery is Wednesday Dec 23. You’ve got little hope of sending Christmas gifts overseas at this stage.

No – you should not. A partner’s infidelity is only acceptable if you are in the room at the same time, watching from a darkened corner, visible only by the light of your cigarette. But if she’s been running around on a cruise ship, rutting away with some cabana boy on the poop deck, your judgement must be swift

It’s unconventional but just proves there are no rules to govern the human heart.

The picture of the Australian actor hanging mid-air, before crashing into the stage, has already become an online classic, thanks to internet meme: ‘Hugh Jackman can ride anything!’ And, looking at the pics to the left, it sure seems there’s nothing the Hollywood tough man can’t do. Jackman joked: “That was so much fun until the end. Too much fun.”
A TWEET LITTLE ROMANCE They may be thousands of miles away from each other, but the love story of Liz Hurley and Shane Warne is continuing on Twitter.
The former Aussie spin bowler is having trouble sleeping, and at 4:45am he tweeted: “Not really a wink of sleep, Tossed & turned all night, feeling extremely grumpy any tips to get a couple of hours at least.” A few hours later the cricket legend continued: “Still no
sleep … so got up out of bed, sulking and feeling grumpy!! Need cheering up today!”. But if Warne is hoping for Hurley to jump on a plane, he’ll be disappointed as she tweeted: “Bored now of silly speculations: no one is divorcing anyone yet, & I have no plans to go to Australia.” She later wrote : “An all time low; tonight’s VLS (vodka, lime and soda) is actually a VTS. No limes & too slothful to shop. T for tangerine”.

LOOK WHO’S TALKING
Best known for his role as Ringo Brown on Neighbours, the 22-year-old actor is not exactly following in Kylie’s footsteps with his rock debut album …
ENTERTAINMENT
Sam Clark INTERVIEW ALISON GRINTER Was it tough trying to record your debut album Take Me Home when you were still working on Neighbours?
It was really difficult. For two years I had to do it in this really stunted way which was really annoying – cos when I write a song it’s sort of a snapshot in time and the point is: you change. For instance, the stuff I wrote at the age of 15 is not the same as the stuff I write now.
A lot of the time “ the question is ‘can he sing live?’ ” What were you writing at the age of 15 – was it angsty?
Back then I was writing about not fitting in at school, basically. It was a bit angsty, slightly angry but not in an aggressive way. But obviously I don’t write about that any more. Your album is very rock so you’re not sticking to the formula of putting out a post-Neighbours pop record.
For me, guitar-playing came before singing so I’ve got to have guitar in there, and I’ve grown up loving rock. At the moment I think 30 Seconds To Mars are awesome – Jared Leto’s the lead singer and an amazing actor as well. Do you see him as an actor-to-muso role model?
to take. Some people like Holly Vallance and Steph Mac, I totally respect their ambitions in the industry but, unfortunately for them, they weren’t received so well in Australia. So it can taint the water, but then obviously, there’s Kylie Minogue … It’s been very difficult here in Australia. What attitudes did you face?
As funny as it sounds, sometimes things are seen as too commercial – and the only thing I can see that goes alongside is that I’m on TV. I mean I don’t see how my music can be seen as “too commercial” given some of the stuff that gets played on the radio! And a lot of the time the question is: “Can he sing live?” As Ringo Brown in Neighbours you had some serious storylines – like the anorexia one. Did you feel a lot of responsibility with that?
I’ve experienced eating disorders, not firsthand, but a with a close friend of mine. Having seen the effect of that on the person was a massive in help in being able to play it as realistically as I possibly could. It was probably the most full-on storyline I did. And it’s amazing the effect your mind can have on your body – I lost
YOU DON’T SAY? What song is guaranteed to get you on the dancefloor? None, I don’t really dance – I need to learn! But Thirsty Merc’s Betty Page. would get me on the floor.
I think it’s amazing what he’s done in that he’s considered so credible in both acting and music. But there’s a big difference in just making it in both industries and being considered credible.
What’s in your pockets right now? A wallet, and that’s all!
Neighbours is obviously a blessing when you start out as a musician but is it also a curse?
Name your guilty pleasure. Buying technology like iPhones and computers and laptops.
I think it depends on what path you want
a couple of kilos doing the storyline even though I didn’t change my diet at all. You described playing Ringo’s death as “a lot of fun”. He got hit by a motorbike which doesn’t sound like much fun at all.
I got to do my own stunts – I love doing my own stunts and I got to something completely different in my last couple of weeks – most people when they’re about to leave are just winding down which is quite boring.

Having kept us waiting for seven years for his new film, brilliant Aussie director Peter Weir is under a fair bit of pressure to deliver something a little bit special with The Way Back. Sadly, the man that gave us Witness and The Truman Show has, after his long layoff, come up with a distinctly patchy offering. Based on a book by WWII POW Slavomir Rawicz, the film follows the long walk to freedom of a group of prisoners who escape a Russian gulag in Siberia. Among the rag-tag crew who trek across hellish terrain towards India is Mr Smith (Harris) and thief Valka (Farrell). As they take on the Himalayas and the Gobi desert, their resolve and ability to stand together are severely tested. Despite

excellent, committed performances from Harris and Farrell and some truly staggering cinematography, The Way Back is not really as emotionally engaging as it should be. The perils the group face certainly make for some exciting viewing but ultimately
you don’t really connect with any of the cons on the run. Given the quality of work that Weir has produced before, The Way Back has to be seen as a disappointing return. GOOD FOR: Those who like bumpy road movies. PIERRE DE VILLIERS

Olivia Newton-John will grace the big screen in a major film role again for the first time in nearly 20 years. The US-based Aussie will star in wedding comedy A Few Best Men by Priscilla: Queen Of the Desert director Stephan Elliott. Newton-John will play the mother of the bride in the film which will begin shooting next year. The flick is “about a groom and his three best men who travel to the Australian outback for a wedding”. It will be NewtonJohn’s first big role since 1983’s Two Of A Kind with John Travolta.

CULTURE
SEE THIS: Theatre The cast certainly seems to be having a good time in this determinedly jolly but dated revival of the late Ken Hill’s 1991 spoof adaptation of HG Wells’ famous thriller. There are corny jokes and innuendo, stock stereotypes (from pipe-smoking bluestocking to buxom innkeeper) and magic tricks galore, but this tale of mysterious goings on in the Sussex village of Iping is too long and the slapstick too repetitive. Still, Ian Talbot’s musical hall style production with its intentionally rough and ready feel boasts a splendid

The Irish charmer is a lead character in Australian director Peter Weir’s latest movie, about the gruelling journey of a group who escape a Siberian gulag in the 1940s. Inspired by Slavomir Raqicz’s The Long Walk: The True Story Of A Trek To Freedom, published in 1956, Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris and Farrell make the 6500km trek from Siberia to India. day, one of my least-favourite characters to play,” Farrell reveals to TNT. “I found him very sad. A very lonely fella. Somebody who is at once a victim of, and a huge proponent of, the system which formed him, which shaped him. I found that really interesting.” With 10 years in pre-production, the film has also been on a journey of discovery – and the story is still surrounded by controversy, as no evidence has been found to prove or disprove whether Raqicz’s tale was based on truth. Although it is believed the walk took place, it is not clear if Raqicz was on it. But for six-time Academy Award nominee Weir, who hails from Sydney and is best known for Dead Poets Society, Gallipoli and The Truman Show, it was a challenge worth undertaking. “Twenty million people passed through the gulags. This is the fictional account of seven of them, inspired by actual events,” Weir says about his first movie since 2003’s Master And Commander. “We travel with our characters across four seasons, 12 months and some 10,000km, seeing how their behaviour and personalities are affected by such harsh

circumstances. They are on the run, coping with nature, and trying to avoid conflict with anyone in their path, knowing there is a bounty on their heads.” And Weir reveals how important it was to have the movie as historically accurate as possible.“I wanted everything to be sourced back to a survivor’s account or a book written by a survivor,” he explains. However, so realistic is the portrayal, that the group even had the right weather conditions at the right times. “We had our wind machines and not two hours before, a sand storm was heading through,” the director adds. “If we needed snow, snow came.” Lead actor Jim Sturgess jokes that Weir
must be at one with the weather gods. “Peter has friends in some very high places,” he laughs. And, thanks to the Oscar-tipped film, Sturgess, 29, is now on many experts’ ‘Actor To Watch’ lists for 2011 after his role as Polish officer Janusz. It was a tough film for him, too. In a life-imitates-art twist, Sturgess discovered what physical extremes really were after suffering food poisoning while battling the elements during filming in the Sahara. In the spirit of the film, though, director Weir found a way back: “I held my breath and we got through it.”

GIG OF THE WEEK SHAKIRA So, Shakira, what has she done for us lately? Well, for starters the slinky-hipped Columbian pop princess stole the show at South Africa’s World Cup opening ceremony earlier this year, spawning a hit with official cup tune Waka Waka. What’s more she’s already followed up her 2009 album She Wolf with back-to-her-Latin-roots LP Sale el Sol/The Sun Comes Out and released catchy-as-hell single Loca. So quite a bit, actually, is the answer to the original question, and now she’s in town for a monster pre-Christmas show. Bring it on, we say.

AUSTRALIA Casualties ‘not known’ Prime minister Julia Gillard has claimed the total number of casualties resulting from the asylum-seeker boat tragedy on Christmas Island may never be known. The boat was carrying up to 100 Iraqis, Iranians and Kurds when it smashed into Christmas Island – an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean. Gillard said 42 people survived last Wednesday’s crash but confirmed at least 30 died.

FAT CAT CRIES POOR December 2. Some of the workers have since lost their jobs because of a fire at the plant, adding insult to injury. “It’s bloody rough, that’s how bloody miserable they are,” said one worker. “They wrote it on the board that we would be stopping at 2pm to pay our respects. The chain stopped. We didn’t expect to be docked, though.”
The worker said the loss of pay was a “kick to the teeth”. “Two cattle, 49 cents each, that’s less than $1. What’s a dollar to those mongrels?” However, Silver Fern Farms chief executive Keith Cooper insisted there was no ‘pay deduction’, claiming throughput fluctuates day to day, affecting the amount earned by workers.
Air NZ forced to pull billboard Air New Zealand has been pressured into taking down a billboard in Nelson after its tagline – advertising “Fares lower than your grandma’s boobs” – drew a barrage of criticism. Aussies restore mongrel

Staring down the barrel of Ashes defeat in the third Test in Adelaide, Australia fought back into the contest on the back of a great spell of bowling from Mitchell Johnson, but also by rediscovering their combative edge.
Johnson, whose six-wicket haul in the first innings in Perth represented such a remarkable turnaround for both the player and the team, said Australia had been trying to rein in their natural aggression for three years, ever since being howled down as “ugly Australians” in the aftermath of the spiteful Test against India at the SCG in January, 2008. But with the Ashes on the line at the WACA, the doggedness has burst out of them once more. “I guess we decided we needed to get up there and get
fiery, but not overstep the line,” Johnson said. “We definitely did back off for a period there. We’ve sort of been up and down with it to be honest. “I had a bit of an incident with Scott Styris in NZ and there’s been a few others along the way – we sort of cop a fair bit of stick for it and then sort of go back into our shells.” “You look at the times when we do play well, when we’ve got that bit of fire about us we do play very well I think.” Indeed, Cricket Australia has given its blessing to Australia’s restored cussedness. “The field of play is not a place for namby pambies and the public doesn’t want to see namby pambies out there,” spokesman Peter Young said.

Lee and Hodge win ODI recalls
India may be the world’s number one ranked side, but they were torn to shreds in the first Test in Centurion, first by South Africa’s bowlers and then by their batsmen. The Proteas won the toss and sent India in to bat, and the South African bowlers immediately vindicated captain Graeme Smith’s decision, Dale Steyn removing Virender Sehwag for a duck in the third over. Steyn and Morne Morkel bowled beautifully in tandem and the Indian batsmen offered scant resistant, all out for 136 from less than 39 overs. In reply, South Africa struck a blow that will have left India’s teeth rattling, the hosts’ top order treating the Indian bowlers with complete disdain. Openers Smith and Alviro Petersen laid the platform, both making half-centuries
The World Cup is still more than two months away and the initial 30-man squads named last week will need to be trimmed between now and then but Australian veterans Brett Lee and Brad Hodge can take heart from the fact they are still in the frame. Hodge, 35, has not played a ODI since October 2007, but is the leading run-scorer in domestic one-dayers this season with 439 runs at an average of 87.80. Lee, 34, has made an impressive return from injury, taking 15 wickets at 21.73 for NSW. Otherwise, Australia’s squad contained few surprises, consisting mostly of older heads and familiar names, with 20-year-old Victorian paceman James Pattinson the only player selected yet to represent Australia in any format.

before handing over to the middle order. Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis combined for a 230-run stand and when Amla got out, Kallis was joined by AB de Villiers, who belted a century in less than a session, bringing up his ton off just 75 balls as South Africa’s score surged past 500. Kallis scored the first double-century of his career – remarkable that he hadn’t posted one before – before South Africa declared with a lead of 484 runs. For India to climb off the mat and mount a challenge worthy of a series between the world’s two top-ranked sides, there will need to be an extraordinary turnaround.

Fergie surpasses Busby Even though Manchester United’s clash with Chelsea was cancelled, Sir Alex Fergsuon still managed to claim a record, becoming United’s longest-serving manager, surpassing Matthew Busby’s mark of 8,810 days in charge. In praise of Busby, Ferguson recalled the best piece of advice he ever received from the Old Man: never read the press. And Ferguson claims he hasn’t since.
Black Cats into top six On a weekend thrown into chaos by snowfalls across England, significant results – completed ones, even – were thin on the ground. That said, Saturday did see Sunderland and Bolton Wanderers squaring off for a spot in the top six. It was Sunderland that prevailed, with 20-year-old English striker Danny Welbeck banging home a diving header from close range after seizing opportunistically on a juicy rebound. Sixth place might not seem like a prize worth playing for, but it’s the lowest a side can finish and still be guaranteed a spot in next year’s Europa League. Whether Sunderland can hang in there and secure that qualification in the
new year remains to be seen – certainly Liverpool could challenge for that position if they get their act together. Newcastle are another team that could push into contention for that final top-six spot, although their fortunes seem to hinge on whether Andy Carroll and Joey Barton keep their noses clean. New manager Alan Pardew even admitted that keeping the two misfits on the straight and narrow was one of his main focuses. “Joey and Andy need to understand that’s what we want to see from them,” Pardew said. “But it isn’t going to come from me, it’s going to come from within them.”

Redknapp unfazed by San Siro return
Harry Redknapp
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp seems to grows more bullish about his team’s prospects every day. This week, Redknapp was talking up Spurs’ chances of progressing beyond the first knock-out round of the Champions League, in which his men will face AC Milan. “It’s a great draw – whoever you get at this stage of the competition it’s always going to be tough,” Redknapp said, insisting that San Siro holds no fears for Tottenham after they ran Inter Milan close there in October. “They don’t come much bigger than AC Milan – they have won the European Cup seven times and are six points clear at the top of Serie A, so they’re the best team in Italy at the moment.
“We should have no fear going back to the San Siro. We’ve been there and scored three goals this season and although it’s a different team this time they have got some fantastic quality players.” In the more immediate future, Redknapp will be hoping his side can take three points away from their Boxing Day fixture against Aston Villa to keep the pressure on the sides above them in the top four.

Greg Inglis has been left in limbo
“How quickly can we expect an Ashes series of the quality of 2005? Could it happen inside another decade? You would require generous odds to make the bet.” James Lawton, writing in The Independent, reckons Australia will be unable to seriously challenge England for the next decade. These Poms are cocky buggers, aren’t they? “I’m sure if I am given another chance, I can certainly make an impact … It cuts me pretty deep to know I didn’t put in my best performance in Adelaide and knowing I’m a better bowler than that” Dropped Australian spinner Xavier Doherty assesses his chance of a recall. Webber confident of equal billing “That is why we achieved so much as a team.” Vettel and Webber had some clashes in 2010, most notably when they collided during the Turkish Grand Prix, ending the German’s race. Despite some friction in the team as a result, Webber had every intention of taking on Vettel again. “I am absolutely confident that next year will be a great opportunity for me to get phenomenal results again,” Webber said. “I will need to beat everyone and one of those drivers is going to be Seb. “Full credit to Seb to have the No. 1 on his car, but come first practice in Bahrain, that won’t make him go any faster.”

Australian Formula One driver Mark Webber is confident he will receive equal treatment from his Red Bull team next season, despite teammate Sebastian Vettel having won the 2010 drivers’ title. The re-legalisation of team orders and Vettel’s world title has led to speculation that Webber will be forced into a supporting role next season but the Australian claimed he expected to be given a chance to fight for the 2011 championship. “The team know the best way to defend our championship is to put both their feet forward in the best possible way,” Webber said.

KATIE MCCARTHY Career Bar manager Age 28 Lives South East London From Ballarat, Australia How did you get into your line of work?
I started working with Creativevents at a bar at a George Michael concert and before I knew it I was working on all types of events and eventually became a bar manager. I have been able to progress in my job so quickly by being given so much responsibility early on. What do you do day-to-day?
I set up and run different bars for Creativevents, ensuring we always have enough food and drink in stock, managing staff and I also serve customers. The best thing about your job?

orkers rejoicing at the news of a public holiday to mark the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton might not get a paid day off after all. Employees are being advised to check over their contracts as some stipulate entitlement only to specific bank holidays such as Christmas Day or Good Friday. Equally, staff whose contracts
state they are allowed 5.6 weeks’ annual holiday “inclusive of bank holidays”, may have to negotiate, according to human resources consultancy, Croner. However, contracts which state the worker is entitled to four weeks’ holiday a year “plus bank holidays” are likely to be safe. Carol Smith, senior consultantat Croner, told the Guardian that for contracts
which refer to each public holiday by name, “it will be up to the employer to make a decision about that day – whether to trade or not and whether the day off will be paid or unpaid”.

At least 22 per cent of the UK’s doctors are migrants from outside the EU. They also fill 16 per cent of IT roles and 19 per cent of chef positions. The figures come on the back of a proposal to slash visas issued next year by up to 25 per cent.
The UK’s unemployment rate rose to 7.9 per cent in the three months to October. The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics also found public sector employment fell by 33,000 while jobs in the private sector stayed at 23.1m.
Listed companies should publish the number of executive women who work for them. The Confederation of British Industry made the recommendation in response to the lack of women on the boards of top UK companies.

One in four workers takes time off to recover from stress-related illnesses
BALANCING

Striking the right balance between work and a social life doesn’t have to be an eternal quest. It just takes a few small changes WORDS REBECCA KENT

■ SMALL CHANGES Once you’ve got your life in balance, you’re laughing
M
ore than half of workers suffer from stress and a third admit to falling asleep at their desks, according to surveys. If this sounds like you – and your work/life balance is 90/10 – the break over Christmas is the perfect time to address your life. Make a new year’s resolution to have some more ‘me’ time, while still proving yourself in your career. Finding a way to juggle a job and a wholesome life is not as impossible as it may seem.
KNOWING WHEN TO STOP Careers psychologist, Sherridan Hughes, says the problem with many people is that “we just don’t know when to stop working”. She adds: “I had a client who took his laptop with him on his honeymoon and needless to say, his wife wasn’t pleased.” The days of leaving work in the office are long-gone. Laptops, Blackberrys and iPhones have ushered us into a 24-hour working day.
TNT Images, Pixland
PUTTING IN THE HOURS A third of workers are putting in more hours each week than the 48-hour suggested maximum by EU directives, the International Stress Management Association found. But it has come at a price. Stress-related leave costs the British economy £7bn a year, with one in four workers taking time off to recover from stress-related illness. “Compounding that is the fear that, in this economic climate, is that if we don’t bend over backwards at work, we’ll lose our jobs,” says Hughes. SOME ARE JUST LUCKY If you are well-matched to your job and actually thoroughly enjoy it, then there’s probably no real need
Making an overhaul of your work-andlife balance can seem like a huge task, so it’s best done at a sustainable pace. Pick a small thing that you can change such as committing to getting out of work on time once a week. Once you’ve acheived this, move on to something bigger and enjoy a balanced life. The other benefits will come rolling in.
■ GET YOUR 40 WINKS
Stress is a killer: avoid it
for self-examination. But, Hughes says, if you’re not that fortunate, then the emphasis needs to be on your life outside of your job. “Some people are dynamos who are energised by obstacles and pressures at work and are happy to be social all day at work as well as all evening,” she explains. “However, there are those that talk all day to people and just want to go home, open a book and shut the world out.” If this seems familiar, at least make sure you wait until you get home. More than 10 per cent of workers surveyed by Sudafed, admitted to snoring at their desks at work and 16 per cent have even caught themselves dribbling.
TAKE A BREAK ALREADY If you’re feeling stressed and tired at work, schedule in some time off – it will do you, and your colleagues, the world of good. “Doing exercise, mediation, relaxation, just getting out to get some fresh air, or even taking up a hobby, like painting, can be therapeutic. Some people enjoy pounding the pavement for a release,” Hughes says. She also recommends laughter. “Go and see a comedian, or do something ridiculous. Laughter is surefire therapy,” she adds.
You’re in dangerous territory if you are consistently sacrificing sleep for work. It’s not worth the damage to your health. So, try to schedule in a full eight hours at least one night a week. It’ll make a marked difference to the other four days.
■ WORK SMARTER Take a look at your workload and see if there are any processes that can change to get things done quicker and more efficiently. Try to multi-task or be better at prioritising.
■ REGIMENT YOUR CALENDAR It’s not ideal, but if you have to regiment your social life, then do it. Perhaps you can schedule in a drink with your friends every second Thursday or theatre each Tuesday, or even a walk/run on certain days each week.
If you have to stay in once in a while, so be it

SHAKESPEARE Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is a treat to watch the old Bard’s plays. The round theatre has an open, thatched roof similar to how it would have been in its original incarnation at Bankside in 1599. The cheapest tickets can be bought for £5, but at that price you have to stand. Some of the performances try to recreate as best possible the conditions under which the plays could have been first performed, including all-male casting, recreated clothing, music and dance. See shakespeares-globe.org
OFF WEST END You don’t have to dive into the centre of London to watch great theatre. There are some great independent and fringe theatres ‘off West End’, where the tickets are much cheaper and the shows certainly just as good, if not better. Some include the Ticycle theatre, Kilburn (tricycle.co.uk) and Riverside studios in Hammersmith (riversidestudios.co.uk)
WHERE TO GET TICKETS The best place to get half-price tickets for top theatre seats is
from the TKTS booth in Leicester Square. In the clock tower building on the south side of the garden in Leicester Square, it’s the only official discount ticket booth in London. Also see tntmagazine.com/theatre for a great range of cheap tickets. Otherwise, you can approach the theatres directly for budget tickets, but sometimes it’s only in the way you ask. LISTEN LIKE THIEVES Enjoy a stroll through Thieves Wood, once part of the legendary Sherwood Forest. As the name suggests, Thieves Wood was a hang-out for outlaws who preyed on travellers. A stone’s throw from here is Fountaindale, the spot where Robin Hood first met Friar Tuck.
DRINK UP Robin Hood’s boozer, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, dates back to the 12th century and claims to be England’s oldest pub. Locals say the hero used to drink in here and there’s even an ale on tap named after him. The pub’s cellars are made up of a labyrinth of caves which could have helped law-wielders make a sharp escape. Whatever the truth about Robin Hood, the trail casts him as a role model for people to fight against oppression. Expert Ade Andrews says: “The biggest truth about him is that he’s lived on in folklore for over 700 years and will continue to do so. That’s the beauty of folklore.”
LOCK UP Set in a 1100ha National Nature Reserve, the village of Edwinstone is home to St Mary’s Church where Robin and Marion tied the knot. The church also provided the setting for one of the legend’s oldest stories. TAKE A BOW Once a hunting ground for royalty, Sherwood Forest was shut off to the public for finding food or firewood. Anyone breaking these rules could be punished by death. It was these harsh laws that made Robin Hood rebel against the rulers, using the forest’s greenery to disguise himself and outwit authorities. The Major Oak tree, now 800 years old, was said to be the secret meeting place for Robin Hood and his merry men, and they are thought to have hidden in its trunk when lawenforcers were about. The truth is, though, that the tree would only have been a sapling back in the 12th century so the tree in question must be an older oak. If you want to learn archery in the land of Robin Hood, in the wooded depths of Sherwood Foreset, visit Nottingham’s Adrenalin Jungle (adrenalinjungle.com). HOW TO MAKE YOUR PHOTOS STAND OUT
THEME: EFFECTS Atop the Cliffs of Ola, Santorini by Gavin Brown of Aukland, New Zealand Fine-grained razor-sharp images are not always desirable if you want to inject some atmosphere into your shots. In the days of film, grain from photos shot on faster films in low light was seen to be intimate and moody. Gavin has given this image of Santorini the grainy treatment for an unusual effect.
TRAVEL 59
WHY IT WORKS: 1 The grain removes the harsh realism that photography sometimes brings to a scene, so the image is more romantic and dreamy. 2 The colour from the grain (or noise if digital) adds a texture reminiscent of pointillism – an artistic technique from Impressionism. 3 The composition is good with lots of interesting lines and shapes.
4 The high viewpoint flattens the shapes so the buildings are abstracted. The effect is like a cubism painting. 5 The vignette at the top of the frame keeps the eye from wandering out of the image.
HOT TIPS: 1 You can monochrome in any colour and it is so simple with digital processing. Sepia is good for nostalgic images and blue or purple for moody subjects.
2 Adding grain or noise is great for a moody atmosphere. Some digital software can add it for you or you can shoot in low light. If you are feeling creative, underexpose the picture for really good grain. You can do this on your compact if it has a bracketing option. Bracket by -1 or -2. 3 Use a soft focus filter. A nylon stocking over the lens will do. Popular for cheesy beauty shots, it is great for any
subject that you want to mix some romance into. 4 Increasing contrast is great for extra drama. Most digital imaging programmes can increase contrast, but for ultimate control try playing with curves and levels. 5 Using flash with filters in daylight is great fun. This does not have to be an expensive experiment. Cellophane from sweet wrappers stuck over your camera’s flash will do.

ere’s something you can’t imagine a Parisian (or a Londoner) saying: “The sun is in our hearts if not in the sky”. No, this declaration of friendliness comes from the people of Lille, a city which actually has plenty to be pretentious about if it felt inclined. Lille, the fourth-largest city in France, recently transformed itself from the French equivalent of grim Northern industrialisation into a trendy, arty mecca, but somehow managed to not to get too full of itself in the process. So if you’re feeling the call of some continental chic,

In Roubaix, eight miles outside Lille, La Piscine houses art around what was probably once the world’s most stylish swimming pool. All art-deco stained glass and curving balconies, your local council pool this isn’t. La Piscine was built in the 1930s, following staunch socialist principles, as a public washing place for the town’s factory workers. The grimy masses have gone but the beautiful pool remains, and you can now see Picassos from the changing booths around its edge.

Stop worring “ and start enjoying modern art ” THIS IS FLANDERS Lille lies in Flanders, a region that once included parts of present day Belgium, Holland and France. The Flemish influence is still strong and the architecture will have you wondering if you’re in Bruges or Amsterdam. But for a deeper look at Flemish culture it’s worth a trip to Cassel, built on one of three hills that rise from Flanders’ plains, and site of numerous historic battles. On top of Mont Cassel stands a windmill that still grinds flour. Visit and you’ll get a bag for free. If the weather’s good you’ll be able to see England, Belgium and Holland from the summit. The Musee Departemental de Flandre has just opened in Cassel. Here you’ll find modern work sharing wall space with old
masterpieces. Some of the paintings date back to the 16th century and are gloriously disturbing with scenes of witchcraft, monsters and strange, satanic goings on.
PEEK A BOO Full of vintage kitsch, this quirky bar opens in the day selling homemade cakes, tarts and salads. By night a DJ turns the floor into a party (peekaboocafe.com).
LOCALLY BREWED Keep yourself fed and watered in Lille’s many estaminet. Back in the day, these Flemish cafes were where workers met to smoke, booze and watch cockfights. Today, estaminet are still full of character with random objects and bunches of hops hanging from the ceilings. It’s as friendly and laid-back as it comes, and after a few locally brewed beers you might even feel up to making an intelligent comment about some that modern art you saw today.

Majorca is a gorgeous island for a holiday; it’s no surprise that Michael Douglas and Andrew Lloyd Webber have both bought retreats on the island. Palma is a bustling port town with plenty to keep you occupied. The Gothic architecture of the Catedral and Basilica de Sant Francesc and the numerous museums should provide some daytime activity, while in the evening you might want to head to (or avoid) the more lively night scene in Platja de Palma. For New Year’s Eve head to Plaza de Cort (Town Hall Square) to hear the bells toll and share the traditional twelve grapes. If you are still on the island on January 5 it is Three Kings night, where parades arrive by boat in Palma and continue through the town. You’re right that Majorca’s not too far from Ibiza, there are two ferry companies that operate the route, Trasmediterranea and Balearia. I would opt for Balearia’s fast service as it takes half the journey time. In winter the ferries operate limited schedules plan well in advance.

This largely depends on how intrepid you are and how determined you are to see the very oldest buildings. Most of the remaining ancient buildings that have survived are grand monuments, temples and palaces. More humble dwellings have crumbled to dust. The Royal Tomb of Ur in Iraq is thought to be the oldest building in the world still standing above ground – more than 4000 years old – although travel here is currently not advisable. Alternatively you could visit the Pergamon Museum in Berlin which displays reconstructions of the infamous Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and its highlight is the stunning and very old Ishtar Gate of Babylon. The Pyramids at Giza are the most accessible of the oldest buildings in the world and date from around 2500BC. Greece, Israel and Turkey also have some excellent options. Ephesus in Turkey is the best preserved classical city in the Eastern Mediterranean. The first settlement on this site was in 600BC. There are also a number of ancient ruins in Negev region of Israel, Avdat and Shivta are both worth a visit.

‘I’M MATES WITH SIR RICHARD’ Passengers will stop at nothing to secure a free upgrade to an airline’s Upper Class Suite, according to a recent survey. “Sir Richard Branson is my friend” and “Sir Richard Branson promised me an upgrade” were the two most common tall tales that passengers used to try and get upgraded, research by Virgin Atlantic has shown. Other popular reasons included passengers saying they were on honeymoon or that it was their birthday. The survey of more than 3000 of the airline’s staff also revealed some unusual stories that passengers used to try to swindle an upgrade. Here are a few of our favourites: 1. “Manchester United lost today, I am really
upset and need the space to get over it.” 2. “My wife is pregnant; I need an upgrade as it is a really stressful time for me.” 3. “My newborn baby has claustrophobia, she is in counselling and we really need an upgrade so she has more space.” 4. “I am Sir Richard Branson’s dentist.” 5. “I have lost all of my money in Vegas but really need an upgrade.” 6. “We are getting married today.” (The couple turned up in full wedding attire). 7. “It’s a Sunday, no one flies on a Sunday so please can I have an upgrade?” Virgin Atlantic’s director of sales and marketing Paul Dickinson said: “In truth, free upgrades are rarely offered.”

didn’t mean to a crash a wedding on my Caribbean holiday. If I had, I might have honed my technique. the ‘long lost cousin’ guise either. It was my tour guide, Toyo, who had heard about the local marriage ceremony and suggested we check it out. “Don’t worry. It’s not formal,” he assured. Toyo hadn’t been wrong yet during our trip around his homeland - the Kuna Yala islands, on Panama’s Caribbean coast – and it seemed he wasn’t going to start now.
Sure enough, we arrived at the thatched hut to find an exceedingly casual affair. The family’s washing was still hanging from the rafters and the catering involved simply helping yourself to grandma’s bread rolls. The best part, however, had to be the ceremony itself, which involved simply throwing the 16-year-old bride and groom into a hammock four times, then declaring them man and wife.

BEACH AND CULTURE The New York Times once said Kuna Yala – also known as San Blas - is one of the few holiday destinations that an anthropologist and a beach bum can agree on. True enough, with ancient tribal culture mixing with translucent Caribbean seas and coral reefs, you can’t really go wrong. The myth is that the expansive archipelago consists of 365 islands, one for
every day of the year. The real number is thought to be greater, about 400, but that depends if you count those consisting of nothing more than a palm tree on a patch of white sand. Seeing as they make the best photos, you probably should.
MEET THE LOCALS One of the reasons development here has been kept to a minimum is because Kuna
people rule their own roost having gained semi-autonomous status after uprising against the state in 1925. Proud and protective of their heritage, they now manage their own tourism industry and refuse to sell any land to outsiders. Although there is a constant threat from creeping westernisation, Kuna traditions remain very much alive. Some of the local outfits that could come straight out of the

pages of National Geographic. The women’s traditional dress – brightly coloured and hand embroidered – is simply stunning. One of the hottest tickets among backpackers in Latin America has to be the trip from Kuna Yala to the historic walled port of Caragena, Colombia. Most hostels in Panama City will be able to point you in the right direction. Details have to be arranged with your captain, but a fiveday trip typically costs from £240, including all meals, but not soft drinks or alcohol. Trips are rarely booked in advance, and sometimes demand outweighs supply, so be prepared to be patient and have a fallback plan. Bring your sea legs, because it can get choppy and most passengers feel sickness at some point. For up-todate advice, contact Casa Viena in Cartagena (casaviena.com) and Luna’s Castle in Panama City (lunascastlehostel.com).
boat, from Panamanian mainland or nearby Colombia (see box). A few, like me, take the overland route from the capital, which is the way the Kuna travel. The track has been recently paved meaning it less spine-joltingly bumpy. There’s also said to be a point on the route when you can see the Caribbean sea on one side and the Pacific on the other; either that’s a myth or I was looking the wrong way.
ISLAND HOPPING Wherever you first arrive, your stay will soon become all about island-hopping. Most people head to the uninhabited islands for the true ‘Robinson Crusoe’ getaway (and the most popular area for backpackers is, in fact, called Islas Robinson), yet it’s well worth combining this with a visit to a Kuna village. The island of Tigre – where Toyo and I attend the wedding – has a good balance of tradition and low-key tourism.

BIG TRIP AFTER HOURS PANAMA CITY NIGHTLIFE When in Panama City, you’ll hear a lot about infamous nightlife strip Calle Uruguay. It’s bright, brash and fun, but for something a little more artsy and familiar, head to the rougher-roundthe-edges neighbourhood of Casco Viejo. Here you’ll find La Casona, a great live music venue which makes its home in rundown colonial properties before the developers move in. For this reason, it tends to up sticks from time to time, so be sure to check the current address at enlacasona.com. Cartengna, Colombia is not far away by boat
guaranteed to catch a wedding or a sodadelivery boat, but it’s the unpredictable nature of travelling in these parts that is worth embracing. As I spend my final night in a Kuna family’s hammock, falling asleep to the sound of lapping waves, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

FINDING A HOMESTAY Not sure where to head for a homestay? William Friar, author of the latest Moon Handbooks Guide to Panama, offers some advice: “The area that is easiest to get to and best-equipped to deal with visitors is on the western end of the archipelago, which is also the most modern and most exposed to tourism. “Slightly east of that area is Islas Robinson, which have the cheapest places but are mainly uninhabited except for backpacker huts. The most traditional places are farther east, but backpackers will probably just have to head out there themselves and see about finding a place to stay when they arrive.” For further advice, try contacting a Panama City hostel or Elias Perez from Kuna Yala’s Hotel Corbiski (eliasperezmartinez@yahoo.com, corbiski.com, +507 6708-5254).

Fascinatingly the island is run on socialist principles. When a school is built, everyone has to take part: the men dig the foundations, the women transport the rubble. If one of them decides they’d prefer to move to the mainland to find a job, they are expected to bring back a share of their earnings. Similarly, although tourists are welcome, they must stay in community-built huts so all the proceeds from their visit can be shared. Over the next few days I find myself moving from island to island in various dugout canoes. I get lucky when I happen upon the inter-island congress meeting, where all the local chiefs have converged to discuss a range of issues, including the protection of their land and culture. The next day, I catch my ride onwards via boat that delivers the islands’ supply of fizzy drinks. Travelling to some of the least-visited islands in Kuna Yala involves improvisation and a willingness to adapt to limited infrastructure. You can’t be
