Are the men better at home?
I would like someone to explain to me how my British chav cousin with nothing going for herself is getting married while I am single. Seriously, any clues would help. Should I get myself a young child and a council flat like hers? Or put on an extra 30 kilos and get a personality removal? I’m far from feral. Actually I’m a pretty awesome chick whose only foible is maybe having too much of a good time. That’s what living in London is all about, isn’t it? But at the risk of being an Australian spinster here forever, I don’t know. Maybe I should return home. Are the men there even any better these days? Amelia, Battersea » Turn to P6 for a chance to win a date and a weekend away!

Mr and Mrs Johns have a perfect right both to their opinions and to foster children (TNT 1436). Sexuality is a phony word and utterly irrelevant to any child. Children are being deprived of loving homes just because would-be foster parents refuse to go along with the pro-gay line. Mark, Bromley
SHARE THE ROADS OR GET EGGED, DRIVERS This morning three motorists tried to wipe me off the road at T-intersections, where they were supposed to give way to cyclists. TO THE SELF-RIGHTEOUS Firstly, to the landlord who is claiming all Aussies are grubs (TNT 1436): you’re basing this opinion on one couple? Do you have any idea how stupid that makes you sound? Secondly, Rob, do you realise how selfrighteous your heading ‘Don’t Pollute My Air, Smokers’ (TNT 1436) is? No, I do not get annoyed with smokers. Masked and decadent
NIGHT OUT: MASQUERADE BALL Masks obligatory, clothes optional. Come again? Well then, if you were thinking of getting all frocked up for the Orphanage Masked Ball on Saturday, April 2, then you won’t have to worry about what to wear at least. However, it may take a particularly large face decoration to conceal your blushes. Elaborate feather and pearls, perhaps? If this is the first time you’ve ever heard of the ball, then you ought to thank us for telling you. It’s brought to you buy the crazy cats at the Last Tuesday Society – a pataphysical organisation that sometimes gathers on a large bed to philosophise over the meaning of life.

But, anyway, back to the ball. Your divine decadence is required in the vaults of the luxurious private members club, Adam Street, just off the Strand. The finest masks wine a prize. Guests will be entertained with live Fado music from Portugal’s Claudia Aurora, blues from Mariachi Jalisco, of Mexico, as well as a little jazz from the house band. On the decks are Troylus Earle, who is touted as ‘London’s finest waltzing DJ’, plus David Dickon Edwards and Francois Dirty South. REBECCA KENT

TATE MODERN LIVE: PUSH AND PULL £8 WHAT: A high-concept, performance-driven means of unpacking and explaining art theory. They take the form of evening seminars but are a mile away from the sit-downand-listen format that bored you to tears at university. WHEN: March 18-19. DO IT BECAUSE: It sounds a bit wanky but the Tate is a remarkable institution and this is your chance to come to grips with some of the artsy discussion that has hitherto left you baffled. And, really, do you want to be a bogan all your life, sitting at home watching old episodes of Gossip Girl?

Capital idea: Selfridges Selfridges may now be officially a ‘chain department store’ after branches opened in Manchester and Birmingham, but the flagship outlet remains the one in Oxford Street, which is the second-largest shop in the UK – after Harrod’s. Part of Selfridges’ notoriety comes from the pioneering influence they had on the way people shop and the way department stores fundamentally altered that experience. Tickets to the 2012 London Olympics going on sale this week.
It was 15 years ago this week that a mass shooting in a primary school in Dunblane, a small Scottish town (right), left Britain in a state of shock. A lone gunman, later revealed to be former scoutmaster Thomas Hamilton, walked into the school’s gymnasium and opened fire on a class of kids aged five and six. The attack lasted just three minutes but ended up claiming the lives of 16 children, along with one of
their teachers. Hamilton also took his own life. Hamilton had been questioned by police leading up to the attack, after their suspicions were raised following complaints about his behaviour to young boys in the area. The handguns he used to carry out the massacre were all legally obtained, galvanising lobby groups to successfully push for a ban on cartridge ammunition handguns. TS

here’s nothing like a good Irish knees up, to be sure, and you can bet communities in London are going to squeeze as much good craic out of St Patrick’s Day, on March 17, as possible. Swathes of the capital will be given over to leprechauns and Guinness. Plus, getting inordinately drunk and singing loudly is the order of the day. This is an opportunity to embrace another country’s national day if there ever was one.

BANJOS AND FIDDLES We dare you to leave in the state you arrived in, should you make your way to the
Irish Cultural Centre, which is where a good portion of London’s Irish will be twinkling their toes to the sounds of a mean fiddler. The Hammersmith venue is a traditional meeting place for anyone of the Hibernian persuasion. On St Patrick’s Day, it is expected to be packed to the rafters, as Le Cheile, a longstanding band of the emerald vein, promises a barnstorming performance. Also on the bill, and bound to whip the crowd into a frenzy is Celtic music band Beoga, acclaimed for their high energy performances.

Are you sure you’re not over-reacting? Or at least failing to recognise the opportunities presented by your girlfriend’s erratic behaviour? Nothing gets me into the sack quicker than a blazing row with a boyfriend. Admittedly, it’s often been someone other than my boyfriend who I’ve ended up in the sack with, but the principle remains the same

The Huichol believe dosing up on peyote allows them to commune with their deities. For me, it was all about the mescaline; I got hooked bad. One night on a mescal binge, I befouled one of the shrines to their maize goddess and the next morning, they banished me, sent me into the desert and forbade me from returning. Now, even in that warm mescal glow, I still see her – singing softly while she wades, her braid swinging by her side – and remember all I’ve lost.

You’d think some safety warnings are more necessary than others but there’s always one idiot who need the obvious spelled out. Last week, a 24-year-old woman spotted a 7ft, 50-stone moose eating from a tree in the Alaskan town of Anchorage. Rather than quickly heading in the opposite direction, the woman moved in to cuddle the moose. Unsurprisingly, the moose didn’t want a bar of it and headbutted her, leaving her with injuries to her head and chest. Serves her right.

LAND APLENTY: In the flick Australia, Nicole Kidman plays a rich landowner. And it seems it was art imitating life as Nic’s family has 24 million acres of land. “At eight on the list of individual and family landowners are the farms and ranches of the Kidmans in Australia, to whom the actress Nicole Kidman is related,” the Daily Mail quoted a survey as saying. About the size of Hungary, it’s the largest private landholding on Earth, which doesn’t belong to a state or a royal family. Kidman Holdings was founded in the 19th century by Sir Sidney Kidman, who, aged 13, ran away from home on a one-eyed horse.

Doc Brown INTERVIEW ALISON GRINTER Is it true that during your rap days in Hackney you used to carry a can of pepper spray as protection?
You use rap quite a bit in your comedy routine: were you inspired by someone else or are you a complete original?
I did carry it for a while, yeah. It was about a combination of things: paranoia, youthful exuberance, fear and genuine stuff as well – there were times when I was threatened, there were times I was confronted, bizarre but true.
I hadn’t watched stand-up before I started doing stand-up. I knew about Peter Kay and Jimmy Carr and I knew about Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. But, no, the rap came first. The first time I got up
Did you ever have to use it?
No, thank goodness. It’s a strange psychology, carrying a weapon. For some people it’s a step down a very slippery slope. For me I was just more aware of not wanting to get involved in anything.
What I wrote “ as a teenager was self-righteous
”
in front of a comedy audience I was just doing rap so it grew organically. I wasn’t really paying any attention to what people had done before. In stand-up you’ve got to talk about what you’ve been through and what has made you the person you are. In your show you mock some of your early rap lyrics such as, “Don’t be racist, it doesn’t matter what colour your face is.” Still cringing then?
Oh definitely! All of the stuff I wrote as a teenager was so self-righteous and pompous. I think a lot of people identify with that whether they made music or not, it’s just the embarrassment of being a teenager who thinks they know it all. What’s your current show ‘Unfamous’ about?
What it’s really about is ageing and selfishness and how that correlates
YOU DON’T SAY? Who would play you in the film of your life? O.T. Fagbenle. I saw him in one of those Inspector Thorne thrillers on Sky 1. He would make a good me. Have you ever been mistaken for someone famous?
with fame. It’s about not forgetting that there other people in the world other than yourself. And things like money and attention can take you further away from that realisation and make you into a knob, essentially. Did you see a lot of that kind of behaviour in the music world?
Oh yeah, no question. You’re just living in a bizarre atmosphere – you’re touring in different places every day – it’s almost like Groundhog Day. Mix that with the adulation from crowds you almost feel like your days have no consequences. You’ve said that you saw Amy Winehouse’s slide into infamy...
It was just drug abuse mixed with a level of fame that you or I couldn’t possibly understand. When I met her she was something of a heavy drinker. By the time her album had done really well she’d already moved from cocaine to crack. You’re Zadie Smith’s younger brother. Have you read all her books?
Of course! I’ve read everything she’s ever written. My favourites are her first and third books; White Teeth is awesome. It’s amazing that a 21-year-old can write a book that’s then translated into 57 languages and turned into a TV series. I’m a massive fan.

Most people know Richard Ayoade as the wild-haired, bespeckled nerd Moss in sitcom The IT Crowd. Judging by Submarine, which he directs with considerable skill, it is behind the camera where Ayoade will from now on be making a name for himself. An engaging, funny, hugely creative coming-of-age film with a visual style of its own, this is one of the most impressive debuts from a British director for some time. Based on a novel by Joe Dunthorne, Submarine is narrated by Oliver (Roberts), a 15-year-old Welsh kid who is desperate to lose his virginity to classmate Jordana (Yasmin Paige). Also occupying his mind is the rocky marriage of his parents (Hawkins and Taylor), which comes under increased strain
when one of his mum’s exes (Considine) moves close by. Delightfully offbeat, Submarine defies genre conventions thanks to Ayoade’s brilliant script and some inspired cinematography. Possibly Britain’s answer to
Wes Anderson, the director should also be complimented for assembling a fantastic cast for his first film, with the lead actors all fleshing out memorable characters. GOOD FOR: Something different. PIERRE DE VILLIERS

Sidney had decided the birthday cake was in for it
She may have been reluctant to sign up for the latest movie but Neve Campbell embraced the role of Sidney like an old friend INTERVIEW FRANCESCA ORSINI / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE
There was a time when you weren’t really keen on doing a fourth Scream. What made you change your mind? At first I was apprehensive. Ten years ago I swore I would never do another one of those films, mostly because it was such a feat for us to do three movies. That’s a rarity. Also I think we all felt the need to move on. But now ten years have passed and I thought it might be fun to revisit this character and see the crew and cast. And audiences really loved these films, so I thought this might be something they’d enjoy to see again. Was it easy to pick up that role after so many years? It was like revisiting an old friend. It’s not a difficult character to play. In some way it’s challenging because there are so many different levels of ... It’s a lot of action. There are a lot of fight and action sequences. And we were usually shooting nights. So in that way it was challenging, but finding the character herself was not.
Getty images; The Interview People
If she were a real friend – what would you have in common? Oh gosh. I like the character. Sidney’s got gumption. She is a very courageous person. She’s got strength. And she’s dealt with a lot in her life. In that way the character is admirable. Do you share that gumption? I have been fairly strong in my life and disciplined from dancing, and courageous in going for the things that I want achieve. Have you ever been in danger yourself where you’ve kept a clear head? Just a near car-accident which I managed to avoid. But luckily I have never been in a situation where I’ve got into danger.
In the movie Sidney has written a selfhelp book. If you were to write one – what would it be about? The most important thing in this industry is to stay grounded and keep a realistic perspective on life and on what things are important and what things don’t need a lot of attention. As a woman in this industry and even in this time, it is important not to hate yourself and not be too hard on yourself. What helps you gaining or keeping perspective? I have worked at an orphanage in South Africa a year and a half ago for a little while and I work with them quite often in trying to put together fundraisers. When you go to a place like that experience of the culture or what other people deal with in other countries or even in your own sometimes the struggle that people go through, it’s pretty easy to get perspective. Do the kids know you from the movies? No, they don’t. How often does it happen that you meet people who have no idea of who you are and what movies you played in? It happens. As much as I get recognised I also don’t get recognised, which I prefer. I live in London, and I prefer living in London, because I am more anonymous. Are there other reasons why you chose to live in London? I really love the city. I was in Los Angeles for 11 years, I never felt it really suited me. As much as it was great for work, for life I didn’t find it inspiring. Obviously one aspect of living in a city is getting to know more of the other sex. What do you find attractive in men? Consciousness. Someone who is worldly in a way, who is conscious of what is going on in the world and has a perspective on life and has a certain amount of spirituality. So if someone is following the news and meditating and dealing with spiritual issues that would make him sexy for you? It doesn’t have to be someone who does yoga or is meditating. He just needs to be aware of the people around them and of who they are and be kind and good and gracious and charitable – that kind thing is important.

GIG OF THE WEEK KATY PERRY Who’d win in a fight between Katy Perry and Lady Gaga? In the one corner is Gaga, covered in raw meat and in the other, Perry is looking resplendent in pink ... Of course Gaga would win! She’s altogether edgier, dirtier and has way more ‘tude. Perry even paid Gaga the ultimate compliment during a Paris gig with a stripped-down cover of her smash hit Born This Way.” Still, Mrs Brand has a way with a catchy tune as she’s demonstrated on hit tunes such as Firework. She’ll be strutting her stuff this week.

They were described by Floyd drummer Nick Mason as “probably better than we are”, and performed at David Gilmour’s 50th birthday. Not bad for a band who’ve built a career on ripping off the Floyd’s songs. Still they must be good or their heroes wouldn’t have heard of them.
He lost 80,000 followers on Twitter when he cut his hair, but given he had around seven million to start with, does he look bovvered? FISHERMAN BELTS CROC A fisherman fought for 15 minutes to free himself from the jaws of a four-metre crocodile by holding on to mangroves and punching the beast with his bare fists. Todd Bairstow, 28, from Weipa, in northern Queensland, was fishing on the banks of Trunding Creek when the huge monster lunged out of the water. Bairstow told hospital staff that he fought for his life with the croc “for about 15 minutes” before locals heard his cries and ran to his aid to help drag him to safety. He told medical staff how he desperately clung on to mangroves to prevent the beast dragging him underwater for the deadly death roll. Not too often that a local gets attacked by a crocodile. Normally it’s boozed-up tourists who ignore warning signs.

SARDINES SWMP BAY A marina in South California became awash with about one million dead fish, leaving harbour authorities to conduct a particularly unpleasant, smelly clean-up operation. The sardines apparently lost their way and ended up in the marina, at which point they suffocated because their numbers were so great. “All indications are it is a naturally occurring event,” said Andrew Hughan, a California fish and game spokesman at the scene. “In the world of fishing, this is an
A tribute to Julius Fromm – the inventor of the modern condom – has angered officials in the Polish town of Konin. Well-wishers draped an over-sized rubber over the town’s largest fountain, a stunt which humourless bureaucrats deemed “inappropriate.” Fromm invented the first seamless latex condom in 1916 but lost control of his creation when he was forced to sell it to Nazi Party leaders for a pittance under anti-Jewish business laws. He died in Britain in 1945, without profiting from his invention. A spokesman for the inventor’s supporters explained: “The town should be proud that one of their own created something that has lead to so much pleasure and is still contributing to world health.” Wonder who came up with that infuriatingly slippery packaging.

limit it to 140 characters but they chose to and it works. It’s instantly accessible.”
THE TRASH MOVES FASTER Not everyone is enamoured with Twitter. Canadian technology writer Clive Thompson scathingly diagnosed it as “the ultimate expression of a generation of celebrity-addled youths who believe their every utterance is fascinating and ought to be shared with the world”. But, as Beckett points as out, Twitter’s great selling point is that users are able to pick and choose. “You don’t have to follow Justin Bieber if you don’t want to,” Beckett says. “It’s that flexibility that means Twitter can help start revolutions in Tunisia while at the same time promoting D-list celebrities.” Marshall McLuhan, a theorist who predicted the internet 30 years before it was created, coined the phrase, “The

his week, Twitter celebrates its fifth birthday – it’s been a meteoric rise for the microblogging site, soaring from humble beginnings to becoming the ubiquitous ‘SMS of the internet’. The brainchild of three young podcasting company execs, who hatched the idea while eating Mexican food in a children’s playground, Twitter now has more than 190m users and generates about 65m tweets each day. According to Charlie Beckett, director of Polis – the London School of Economics’ journalism thinktank – the secret of Twitter’s success is its flexibility and simplicity. “People can adapt it to suit their lives and I think a lot of other stuff has in turn adapted to suit Twitter,” he says. “Twitter gets into places people might not have expected … they didn’t have to
Egyptians overthrew their government and (inset) kept the world informed via Twitter
It’s all about “ the idea and its momentum ” NEW MEDIA, NEW CHALLENGES Last year, Chelsea footballer John Terry successfully took out a super-injunction suppressing details of his extra-marital affair with an England teammate’s former girlfriend. The newspapers and TV stations complied; Twitter didn’t. The episode demonstrated, in tawdry microcosm, the power of Twitter. With traditional media shackled, Twitter caught fire; effectively, thousands of independent publishers flouted the super-injunction until the dam burst, enabling TV and newspapers to join the fray. “I don’t think anyone’s quite sure about what to do about social media,” Beckett says of the attempts to regulate publishing on social media platforms. “They can’t go around prosecuting everyone – it would be like going around to pubs and arresting people for having conversations.” The corollary, of course, is that, in countries where free expression is stifled,

medium is the message.” It’s a prescient line ratified every day on Twitter, where immediacy and the fact content is unfiltered matter as much as content itself. “The difference is not so much that Twitter produces more trash; just that the trash moves faster,” Beckett says. “If Charlie Sheen has a breakdown or someone goes on a Twitter rant, it would take a day or two for a newspaper to publish and for people to write letters and express opinions. Twitter accelerates not just the reporting of that news but the speed of people’s reactions to it.”

Twitter becomes a crucial cog in the exchange of information that would otherwise be censored. Across the Middle East – Iran, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya – Twitter has allowed voices of protest to be heard internationally. “I think it’s more useful in telling the world what’s happening, rather than actually generating the support on the ground,” Beckett says. “I don’t think it’s right to talk about a ‘Twitter revolution’. YouTube is probably more important, but maybe people are directed via Twitter – it’s all oil in the machine.”
HERE TODAY, GONE TOMORROW? By definition, the zeitgeist changes quickly; Twitter enjoys prime position in the collective cultural conscience that it aims to replicate online, but for how long? “It could be gone in two or three years’ time – look at MySpace – there could be something else just around the corner,” Beckett says. “That’s the nature of new media – in old media, newspapers didn’t tend to come up and then disappear quickly, but in new media, the investment is relatively small. “It’s about the idea and its momentum
and if that goes, we could all be using something else with a silly name.” According to Beckett, for Twitter to reach its tenth birthday in the same frenetic, chaotic health as it has reached its fifth, adaptation is inevitable. And, tellingly, it will ultimately boil down to the bottom line. “I think we now need a two-speed Twitter,” he says. “You’d have one account where people burble away and another where people say more significant things. “And they need to make it pay – they’ve got the conventional ads but Twitter creates an incredible data-set of what people are interested in and what people like and dislike, so it’s the opportunity to monetise that without pissing people off.”

THE MOST POWERFUL MAN ON TWITTER?
Charlie Sheen has used Twitter to find an intern
British author, actor and TV host Stephen Fry was one of the first celebs on the Twitter bandwagon and has mobilised his support on the site to edifying effect. In 2009, Fry used his cult following to help smash an injunction taken out by Trafigura – a Dutch energy firm trying to conceal the damaging effects of its pollutants on the African coast. The same year, Fry led the backlash against Daily Mail columnist Jan Moir, who seized on the death of Stephen
Gately – the gay former Boyzone member – to attack same-sex marriage. But Fry may have been surpassed by Charlie Sheen as the most influential man on Twitter. When Sheen opened his Twitter account last week, he attracted one million followers in just 25 hours. And then, when Sheen advertised via Twitter that he was looking to employ “a winning intern with tiger blood”, the site hosting the advertisement received more than 75,000 applications.

OZ VIEW Gillard and Rudd deny Libya rift ■ GOVERNMENT PULLING IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS ON NO-FLY ZONE Prime minister Julia Gillard has rejected suggestions she and Kevin Rudd – the former prime minister, now foreign minister – were in open conflict over the country’s stance on Libya. Rudd has, over the past fortnight, repeatedly called for a no-fly zone over Libya to halt Muammar Gaddafi’s air attacks on rebels, and has been seeking support in the Middle East over the issue. But during her visit to the US, Gillard was less hawkish, saying the UN Security Council should consider the “full range” of options to address the worsening conflict in the North African
nation. “Kevin Rudd and I are talking about exactly the same thing,” she said. “We view as absolutely revolting and repugnant the violence we are seeing against the people of Libya. We are calling on Colonel Gaddafi to cease this violence and go.” Gillard said she wanted the UN Security Council to consider a no-fly zone over Libya. Opposition leader Tony Abbott was broadly supportive of Gillard’s position, remaining open to a no-fly zone. “I think Colonel Gaddafi and his crew have well and truly forfeited any legitimacy and I
think that the sooner we have a more democratic form of government in Libya, the better,” Abbott said. Alexander Downer, foreign minister under John Howard, was happy to interrogate the contrasting stances taken by Gillard and Rudd. “Rudd has been the world champion of the no-fly zone. There’s no foreign minister I’ve come across who has been as upbeat about a no-fly zone,” Downer said. “She’s gone to Washington, obviously that’s been a topic of conversation and they will have given her the cautious line.”

Primary support for Labor is up three points, to 26 per cent, but Coalition support has risen by four points, to 50 per cent – the first time in 15 years the Liberals and Nationals in NSW have attracted support from half of all voters. In two-party-preferred terms, the Coalition leads Labor by 63 per cent to 37 per cent, the equal-largest lead the conservatives have reached since Newspoll began measuring state political opinion.
‘Barack, meet Barnsey’ Australian prime minister Julia Gillard spent the week in Washington hobnobbing with President Obama and marked the occasion by giving him a Sherrin – the ball in Aussie rules – and an iPod, full of Australian music. The idea of the leader of the free world being expected to tap along to Jimmy Barnes may make Aussies cringe, but at least she didn’t give him an Akubra and a stuffed koala.

The earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last week had the entire Pacific region on high alert. But the Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology quickly claimed the country’s mainland, islands and territories were safe, citing the shelter provided by Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Charitha Pattiaratchi, a tsunami specialist at the University of Western Australia, said the quake in Japan had triggered a tsunami because it occurred in relatively shallow water, just 25km below the sea bed. “If the explosion is very deep in the ocean you don’t move the sea surface, so you don’t get a tsunami,” Pattiaratchi said. “Usually we say for a tsunami to be generated it has to be less than 30km deep.”

NZ VIEW KEY WANTS CUP CRITICS TO BUTT OUT Prime minister John Key has angrily dismissed an English rugby writer who suggested Christchurch would be unable to host Rugby World Cup matches later this year. Journalist Peter Bills claims even if AMI Stadium can be repaired in time, the city is too unsafe because it’s impossible to guarantee there won’t be another destructive quake. “I think he should stick to writing rugby columns and avoid becoming a seismologist,” Key told reporters. He also dismissed suggestions, advanced by Bills, that another big earthquake is forecast to hit Christchurch. “No, that is not the way I have seen the advice presented.” Key, pictured below, said no one was in a position to decide on whether the cup could be held in Christchurch. It was purely speculative at the moment.

Dispute over quake funds New Zealand’s opposition has urged the government to clarify how funds from the recent earthquake appeal will be spent, amid suggestions that businesses may receive some of the money. The Government Earthquake Appeal was established shortly after last month’s disaster and Labour’s earthquake recovery spokesman, Clayton Cosgrove, said support for Christchurch’s small firms was crucial, but should not rely on charitable donations from the public. “The first priority for charitable dollars is literally to help people with the necessities of life. Why should the charitable dollar go
straight to contributing to commercial arrangements? “Though there is a legitimate need to fund small business in terms of cash flow ... I would have thought that was a role clearly for the government.” Cosgrove said it was now important the government offered some clarity as to how appeal funds would be used. In response, a spokesman for prime minister John Key said funds would likely go “to support families in need as they go about rebuilding their lives, and is likely to support trauma and social services and the rebuilding of community infrastructure”.
COPS UNCOVER HUGE CANNABIS OPERATION A major police operation in Hawke’s Bay uncovered what police say is about NZ$40m (£18.5m) worth of cannabis and resulted in dozens of arrests. The two-week annual operation involved property searches and arrests from Wairoa in the north down to Central Hawke’s Bay. Police confirmed the seizure of about 12,000 cannabis plants, most of which had been grown outdoors, and welcomed the haul, insisting it would deal a blow to the area’s drug underworld. Detective senior sergeant Mike Foster of the Napier CIB reportedly said the number of plants seized was up on the 10,000 confiscated last year. “We are certainly happy we have got 12,000 plants out of the system and arrested a number of people,” he said.

t’s bleak times for smokers – or so they’d have us believe if you listen to their nicotinefuelled rants for long enough. The ‘poor things’ were hard-done by in 2007, when the government brought in the smoking ban, preventing them from lighting up in enclosed public places. Now tobacco has been banned from being on display in shops – products will have to be kept under the counter in supermarkets by next year (although not until 2015 in small shops – why?). And there are proposals to sell cigarettes in plain packaging, so that the companies behind the brands can’t cash in as much. But are all these anti-smoking actions really making a difference? Yes. According to Cancer Research UK smoking rates are declining by 0.4 per cent a year. Not a huge amount, but enough to show the social stigma attached to puffing away is changing. In 10 years’ time, smokers will be completely shunned. I know it’s working, as I’m one of the victims of this ‘Nanny state’. I used to be a culprit myself, a ‘social smoker’, puffing along with my friends and colleagues in the pub after work. But once the smoking ban came to force, things changed. Instead of
a sneaky pleasure, smoking became a burden. Yes, Big Brother telling us what to do is irritating, but with one out of two smokers estimated to die from a tobacco-related disease, it’s hard to ignore the gruesome symptoms. It used to be cool and glamorous to smoke. Now, not so much. Well, I guess it’s the same with supermodel Kate Moss. She used to be cool and glamorous too. Now, not so much. Lighting up her cigarette at Paris Fashion Show on No Smoking Day is certainly bad judgment, considering millions of people around the world are dying from their tobacco addictions. Maybe her career should head the same way – up in smoke.

up with bed bugs, a blocked toilet or a stomach virus? Travel agent sunshine.co.uk claims organisers receive loads of complaints from Brits abroad (who, let’s face it, most of us try to avoid), whinging that their holidays
had offered ‘too much of the good’. Examples of complaints includes a holidaygoer in Portugal, who moaned that his bed had been so comfy that it caused him to oversleep instead of getting up and making the most of it. Another blamed his 2.25kg weight gain on the resort as the buffet food had been so nice. What’s wrong with people? Are we really so spoilt we have to blame others for everything? INGLIS TRY NOT ENOUGH South Sydney Rabbitohs welcomed star recruit Greg Inglis for the first time but were unable to start their season with a win. The Rabbitohs went down to the Sydney Roosters 40-29 in a thrilling match at the Sydney Football Stadium. The Rabbitohs looked absolutely shot when they trailed 28-6 early in the second half but then came storming back with four tries in 19 minutes, including one to Inglis, to level the scores 28-all. A field goal to Chris Sandow put the Bunnies in front and a rousing win appeared on the cards. But it wasn’t to be; Tom Symonds emerged as an unlikely hero, crossing twice in the dying minutes to snatch victory for the Roosters.

HUSSEY TO PLAY ON When Australian batsman Mike Hussey was left out of his country’s World Cup squad because of a hamstring complaint, it appeared his ODI career was over. After the World Cup, older players would be moved on to make way for new blood. Or so the theory went. A few weeks later, though, not only is Hussey back in the squad as a late call-up; he’s talking about playing on after the tournament. “I’m pretty keen to keep playing,” Hussey said. “The key factors for me are, am I still contributing to the team? Am I enjoying the contest out in the middle? And if I’m still enjoying playing for Australia and doing all the travel and the training and still trying to motivate myself to get better. At the moment I still feel like I’m ticking all those boxes.”

Preview … Super 15 getting serious BLUES V HURRICANES WARATAHS V CHEETAHS LIONS V FORCE BULLS V STORMERS Saturday from 6.30am TV: Sky Sports 4 The Super 15, with its new three-conference set-up, is a month old and the pecking orders for this season are beginning to emerge. The beauty of dividing the competition up into three national groups is that it injects a whole other layer of drama, as sworn rivals jostle for position with the aim of qualifying for finals. In New Zealand, little seems to separate the sides – the Highlanders have started brilliantly and the Crusaders should eventually flex their muscles – but the evenness of the opening exchanges means there’s plenty at stake when the Blues and the Hurricanes clash this weekend.
Among the Australian sides, the Waratahs have been the predictable front-runners and have a golden opportunity to consolidate their position when they host the struggling Cheetahs. The Tahs are Australia’s only real hope of mounting an assault on the title this year – the exciting football of the Reds notwithstanding – but have a history of falling at the final hurdles. Will this year be different? In other matches, the Lions and the Force face off – it will be of interest to the anoraks who want to keep an eye on their national team’s young players, but of little consequence in the battle for play-off spots. Possibly the biggest match of the weekend will be the Bulls against the Stormers. They’re two powerful South African franchises, peppered with world-class players, both with designs on taking top spot in their national conference. Could be epic.

The Chat … INJURIES HIT ENGLAND STARS What’s happened? England’s World Cup campaign has been horribly disrupted by the withdrawals of fast bowler Stuart Broad (pictured) and star batsman Kevin Pietersen. Broad has gone down with a side strain while Pietersen suffered a hernia. Is KP a bit soft? There’s talk that the England staff expected Pietersen to be able
to play through with the aid of painkillers and that they were a bit surprised when he ‘pressed his own eject button’. How much does it hurt England? Pietersen has been in ordinary form and he’s replaced by Eoin Morgan, so the net loss isn’t too great. The absence of Broad, though, could really hurt England, particularly as their bowlers have already been leaking runs.

Benji Marshall: the burden of restraint still applies

A
t 3am two Saturdays ago, Benji Marshall – captain of the Wests Tigers and arguably the best rugby league player on the planet – allegedly punched a bloke outside a Sydney takeaway joint. Marshall has been charged with assault and will appear in court next month. He claims provocation; specifically, that he was racially abused. Let’s assume that’s true; does it let Marshall off the hook? It should go without saying that it’s absolutely inexcusable for someone to amble up to a stranger on the street – or anyone, anywhere – and give them an earful of racial invective. It’s also worth noting that Marshall is a cleanskin and the NRL has taken no action against him. In that context, anyone can see why the prevailing view Down Under might be that Marshall had every right to thump the dickhead. Assuming that’s what happened, there’s an obvious natural justice in a racist getting his right whack. Unfortunately, though, it’s not that simple for footballers. They can’t just belt anyone who asks for it. And once you license individuals to react violently to provocation, where do you draw the line? If someone approached Marshall
and insulted his mother, would he be entitled to punch him? Maybe? Maybe not? Not really. Not at all. So is racial vilification the exception? Should we privilege that kind of abuse above all others and say that race-based insults alone excuse a violent response? It’s a Pandora’s Box. The only sound conclusion is that, although racism is especially vile, a player’s burden of restraint still applies. Unfair? Perhaps. Maybe bear that in mind next time you encounter casual racism. Because authorising a footballer to punch a racist outside a kebab shop is a cop-out – it’s just another way of abrogating our shared responsibility to confront and condemn racism wherever it surfaces.

One day, a “footballer will kill himself ” the relentlessly shrill, outraged tenor adopted by the media when covering the off-field missteps of elite sportsmen. Judgement is the fuel that fires Australia’s sports media. Turning footballers into hate-
figures is Plan A when it comes to capturing an audience. And one day, this kind of coverage will push a sportsman over the edge – it could have happened to Ben Cousins or Joel Monaghan. One day, a scandal-plagued footballer will kill himself. And those columnists, who spent months assassinating his character and harassing his family, will offer maudlin eulogies in fake-sombre tones. But the veneer of too-late sensitivity will do little to conceal the blood on their hands.

AN EIGHTH TITLE FOR ROSSI? Rossi, the Italian who has dominated MotoGP over the past decade, does not present himself as a man desperate to add another title to the seven he has already claimed. He seems happy to fan speculation that he will leave MotoGP at some point, either to race in World Superbikes or Formula One. This year, Rossi is riding a Ducati, rather than the Yamaha he rode to four of his championship wins, and early testing suggests he could find himself off the pace. “This bike must be ridden mostly through oversteer, in the sense that, in order to make it turn, you need to get the

he MotoGP circuit kicks off afresh this weekend, with the first grand prix of the new championship race being held in Qatar. The shuffling of top riders between teams in the off-season has created some welcome uncertainty and the expectation that the established contenders may face stiffer competition from the chasing pack. That said, experience still counts for plenty and it’s hard to imagine Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner and Jorge Lorenzo – the last three world champions – not occupying spots at the pointy end of the standings once the final chequered flag is waved.
CAL CRUTCHLOW: THE BRIT IN THE MIX day. “I played for Coventry (City) and Northampton (Town), had some trials with (Aston) Villa and then went back to Coventry and carried on playing at youth team reserves level,” Crutchlow says. “But I enjoy motorcycles more, it’s as simple as that.”

A new addition to the MotoGP scene, Cal Crutchlow – yes, that’s his real name – will be hoping to make a big impression. After being recruited from the ranks of World Superbike, the 25-year-old will have his work cut out this year, on a circuit that is notoriously unforgiving for newcomers. rear to slide a lot,” Rossi says. “In this respect the Ducati is very different from the Yamaha. “But this is a manoeuvre I do to try to solve the problems we have now: in my opinion, with time, we’ll be able to improve the situation a lot. “[Turning is] the thing we lack the most. But at the moment the only way to handle this bike is to adapt to that way of riding, it’s the bike’s DNA.”
CAN STONER RETURN TO THE TOP? After winning the world championship, aged 22, back in 2007, Stoner looked set for an extended run at the top of his sport. But blighted by injury and illness, as well as some issues with his bike, Stoner has struggled to scale the same heights. Like Rossi, Stoner has switched teams

for 2011 – indeed, Rossi has replaced Stoner at Ducati, while the Australian has moved to Honda. With the upper echelons in a state of flux, Stoner predicts a dark horse will challenge the established riders. “I expect some surprises, although I did the same last year and there were the same four riders winning races and getting on the podiums,” Stoner says. “I am certain Dani [Pedrosa] and Jorge [Lorenzo] will be in front, but Andrea [Dovizioso] is quickly improving and also Simoncelli and Ben Spies can increase the list. Valentino might be ready for the first race, but we might have to wait a little. But I am sure that there might be some unexpected rider that will make an effort to be in front.”
BACK-TO-BACK FOR LORENZO? In winning the world
championship last year, Lorenzo produced the most dominant season on record, securing the title with three races remaining and ending up on the podium in 16 of the 18 grands prix. The Spaniard is perfectly placed to take advantage of Rossi’s declining fortunes – at 23, his best years of racing lie ahead of him and he will undoubtedly benefit from the stability of staying put on his Yamaha. “I’m very happy to be here again preparing to start another season riding with Yamaha,” Lorenzo says. “Winning the World Championship last season was an incredible feeling, but now we start again. I have a great crew and with the hard work of the Japanese engineers over the winter I feel confident we can fight for more success this year.”

ost bosses believe that the unfair dismissal law should be changed to make it easier for them to lay off staff. More than 80 per cent of 250 employers surveyed by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development felt they had no effective protection against workers taking “unjustifiable” claims to an employment court. Three out of five firms complained that an employee
claiming unfair dismissal had “tagged on” a discrimination claim in the hope of getting more compensation. Mike Emmott, the institute’s employee relations adviser, said: “This survey reflects the strength of feeling among employers about the failings of the current system for resolving workplace disputes.” Employment tribunals have seen an increase in the number
of claims despite attempts in recent years to find a solution, the institute says. The government has recently outlined plans to increase the minimum period employees serve before they can make a claim from 12 to 24 months.

THE BACKGROUND COUNTS The management of extras, or film background artistes, as they are also known, is much more professional than it used to be. ‘’In the dark old days of filming, extras were seen as cattle, moving from one side of the set to the other and kept back from the feeding bus,’’ says Chris Villiers, the managing director of 2020 Casting. These days, unscrupulous agencies have, for the most part, been weeded out
and that’s due to people like Villiers, an actor himself, who attaches great value on the role of extras. ‘’By creating a really authentic background in a movie you allow the foreground to come to life,’’ says Villiers, who prides himself on finding the perfect fit for a movie. Whether it be for a swashbuckling fantasy, Georgian period drama, or barbarian epic, which demands brutish, long-haired men, there is genuinely work for every kind of person. “We recently supplied extras for a Russian bar scene set in Moscow, so we sourced as many Russians living in London as we could,” says Villiers.

While he is a regular on the set of EastEnders he has secured a more glamorous gig recently on the set of the new Martin Scorsese film, Hugo Cabaret, featuring Jude Law. “I’m quite punky and tend to get cast as a geek, or a reporter. However, no one ever puts me in a suit, so it’s no surprise I don’t get cast as a solicitor or doctor,” King says.
He’s happy to get his kit off altogether, though. “I once was in a nude wedding scene where the lead had locked himself in the bathroom because he’d taken Viagra and me and some other extras were bashing down his door. I was so nervous at first, but it was all tasteful.” Working as an extra is not for aspiring actors, King has found. Despite being right in the thick

At the historic Roman Baths, humorous actors recreate scenes from centuries ago around the pool’s 37ºC waters. Next door, at Bath Abbey, a brass and double bass ensemble fills the magnificent church’s eaves with musical messages to the heavens. And after climbing the 294 steps of the Abbey’s tower to survey the city from one of its highest points, I almost feel as if I’m the recipient of those melodies. Back outside, waves of tribal roars from the Rec Stadium echo around the town as the local team play host to an Aviva Premiership rival. I join the hordes of other cheapskates on the Pulteney Bridge (a popular spot for marriage proposals) to watch the game on the big screen at the unobscured northern end of the ground, cursing inwardly whenever the action moves south. Then, the renowned six-mile Skyline track on the city limits offers perspective on the hustle of the city. Its Roman ruins, hidden valleys and tranquil woodlands provide ample exploring until dusk finally extinguishes daylight.

Fiction merges into fact in Stockholm
ucked away in a corner on Tavastgatan road, from the outside Samirs Gryta could be just any other ordinary restaurant in Stockholm. Its name is emblazoned in thick white letters on a red canopy, which hangs down, casting a partial shadow over nondescript grey walls. Inside, steam rises out of dainty coffee cups and the flicker of white candles illuminates a black-panelled wooden and glass interior. A couple are sitting discussing a criminal conspiracy that could rival any of the theories surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy. Suddenly, all hell
breaks loose as a gunman with an automatic weapon tries do away with both of them. But fiction is merging into fact, as I’m on the Millennium tour and my imagination has recreated one of the scenes from that eponymous trilogy of novels.

attack in 2004. Yet, it wasn’t until twelve months later that this was achieved. Almost immediately, this cliffhanger and the subsequent The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest struck a chord with the public; combined global sales total of more than £19m. Such phenomenal success is no surprise, as the paperbacks and later films have some of the most fascinating characters ever invented. The heroine is Lisbeth Salander, a foxy, lesbian, computerhacking vigilante who gives a new meaning to the term kick-ass. And her partner in crime is Mikael Blomkvist, a dedicated investigative reporter and publisher (of Millennium magazine), whom Larsson has clearly based on himself. Together, this pair of über-sleuths roam the 20th century pastel townhouses, parks and cafés of Stockholm and further afield, trying to get to the bottom of various mysteries. And the Millennium tour leads me to several of these places, plus various other haunts from their world.
FACT AND FICTION For the entirety of our tour we are based in Södermalm, an island and one of the four districts (the Innerstaden) which form the nucleus of Sweden’s capital city. We begin on the enchanting narrow cobbled streets near Bellmansgatan 1, the location of Blomkvist’s luxurious apartment. Other sites we encounter in this, the most bohemian milieu of the whole city, are Salander’s

Not only have the exploits of this Nordic gumshoe been made into a native film and TV series, it was also on the small screen in Britain. Despite already being Scandinavian productions, Stieg Larsson’s yarns are now being fashioned into Hollywood movies. The Social Network’s David Fincher is set to direct the first.

When in LA, stay TIP OF in Santa Monica THE WEEK rather than Hollywood, which sounds exciting but can be dodgy at night. There’s a great (Hostelling International) hostel out there, just two streets away from the beach and one street away from all the famous shops. You can fly to Montenegro from London Gatwick with Montenegro Airlines, but this is relatively expensive. You may find it easier and cheaper to fly to Dubrovnik, particularly as you’ll be leaving from there anyway. EasyJet flies direct from Gatwick, book early for the cheapest fares. From Dubrovnik you can catch regular buses to Montenegro. To be frank, you could easily fill a week in Montenegro, so you will need to be selective with just a few days. I would start in the Bay of Kotor, in south-western Montenegro, famed for its stunning scenery of mountains and deep blue sea. Its old town is worth a look too for its maze of cobbled streets and hidden piazzas to get happily lost in. There are some great resorts along the coast, but bear in mind these do get busy in peak season. Depending on your taste, there’s lively Budva, flush with beaches and bay islands historic monuments or picturesque Petrovac, alive with olive trees, long sand-pebble beaches and small inlets. There’s also a fortress called Castello.

I would suggest stopping in the New Forest on your way there – the village of Lyndhurst is a great place to pause for lunch and there are plenty of picturesque hiking routes. The south west coast path offers superb walking; the 630-mile trail runs from Poole to Minehead so you have plenty of stretches of coast from which to choose. Two and half hours by car from London, Dorset offers the perfect solution to a week away. Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove are stunning examples of our coastline to stroll along. The awe-inspiring ruins of Corfe Castle should definitely be on your list of must-see attractions.
I have booked myself on a Croatia sailing trip leaving from Dubrovnik in July. However, I would like to arrive a few days early and head down to Montenegro. What is the best way to get to Montenegro from London and where should I visit if I’m staying for just a few nights? Jenny, via email

Ban kids from flights?
TRAVEL
Tourists have been warned not to swim in the sea at Bali’s Kuta beach due to pollution which could be a potential health risk. A plankton infestation has turned the water dark brown and flotsam has been brought ashore by seasonal winds. Other beaches in the south of the island remain unpolluted.

ADULT-ONLY FLIGHT PLEA

A massive 83 per cent of people would like to see adult-only areas on flights, according to a recent survey. And almost a third of passengers (31 per cent) would go as far as banning children on flights completely, revealed the HolidayExtra.com report, which polled almost 5000 people. Noisy children aren’t the only issue with holidaymakers. More than 75 per cent of those quizzed said they suffered because there wasn’t enough leg room and feeling uncomfortable was the most dreaded aspect of a flight. Stinky passengers were named as another bugbear, with nine per cent of those surveyed having had their flight spoilt by the foul smell of a neighbour. Only one per cent of travellers found snoring

Egypt attracts adventurers Tour operators have seen a renewed interest in Egypt by travellers seeking an adventure holiday. Since the Foreign and Commonwealth Office declared the country safe to visit after weeks of protests which led to the overthrow of Mubarak, Tucan Travel’s regional operations manager Rowena Byrne has revealed that adventure travellers are first in line to return to the rapidly changing country.
Find smaller crowds at top sights
She said: “With no travel restrictions in place, now is a fantastic opportunity for travellers to not only witness history in the making as the sun rises on a new and hopefully more democratic Egypt, but to take advantage of smaller crowds.”
irritating, although twice as many women than men considered it an issue on a flight. Anthony Clarke-Cowell, HolidayExtras.com spokesman, said: “I’m surprised so many travellers have expressed such a strong desire for adult-only flights. “Flights abroad always presents a challenge for families and this is reflected in the results. “There is clearly a need for more facilities to keep children happily engaged in quieter pastimes both during and before a flight.” Last month, it was reported that campaigners were urging airlines such as BA and Virgin Atlantic to introduce child-free flights. Virgin Atlantic said it had no plans to introduced adult-only zones on planes, while BA said it does its best to “help families travelling have as smooth a journey as possible.”

WALPURGISNACHT (WITCHES’ NIGHT) HARZ MOUNTAINS, GERMANY, APRIL 30 WHAT: Dress as a witch, spend all night dancing yourself into a frenzy around the bonfire and watch out for warlocks (and for teenagers playing pranks on you). WHERE: Celebrated in various forms throughout north and central Europe. The Harz Mountains are spookiest. WHY: The name comes from Saint Walburga and there are also May Day associations. In Germany, this is the night
when witches and warlocks reputedly flew to the top of Brocken Mountain for debauched celebrations which included sex with the devil. DO IT BECAUSE: You might see the ‘Brocken Spectre’ – a magnified shadow of yourself.

THE INSIDER DOMINIC SPEAKMAN, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, DESTINOLOGY The best part of my job is travelling the world to see and experience everyone's dream destinations. The worst part of my job is jetlag. My favourite UK city is Manchester. My most memorable travel experience was sleeping
under the stars in The Maldives and waking up to see the sun rise over the most beautiful crystal clear waters. The next trip on my travel wishlist is South Africa and Bora Bora. I always pack my laptop (I'm a bit of a geek). My guilty travel pleasure is spending time in the spa. I also try to have a massage every day when I'm on holiday.

THE LOST Forget the tourist hordes of Machu Picchu and brave an Indiana Jones-style hike through Colombia’s jungle-dense Caribbean coast WORDS JANINE KELSO
Colombia SOUTH AMERICA
A
seemingly never-ending series of moss-covered steps rise up out of the river like an MC Escher sketch. After three days of Indiana Jonesstyle trekking through steamy dense jungle in Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in Colombia’s Caribbean coast, followed by a 20-minute wade in a fast-flowing river, we’ve almost reached our destination.
STEP BY STEP Flanked by swarming jungle, the 1500 crooked and slippery steps make for a tough ascent. After passing up and over a mist of clouds, we arrive at the top of the stairs at the mountain’s summit, the dramatic setting for the Ciudad Perdida (“lost city”), an ancient city dating back to 500 years BC, where the Kogi Indians once made their home. Scattered across a 4km radius are the remains of the ancient city: more than 100 weed-encrusted and palm-fringed stone terraces that once provided the base for the villagers’ wooden huts, linked by a labyrinth of winding paths and steps, studded with wildflowers. As our group of 10 are the only people wandering around this crumbling city, it feels like we’re discovering a lost world, one that has sat forgotten for hundreds of years. There is an eerily quiet feel to the place, especially when you consider thousands of people lived here until it was abandoned during the Spanish Conquest. And with its endless hidden staircases, untamed vegetation and lack of tourists, I feel like a child in a fairytale exploring a secret garden.

Picking coca leaves. Ouch Cartagena’s cityscape
INSIDER VIEW Cecilia Cambero, tour leader, Intrepid Travel My favourite place in Colombia is Cartagena de Indias because it’s the most beautiful city in the country. Visitors to Colombia should not leave without trying the best ceviche in South America, made with prawns and mango juice. One of the best places to try it is in Lav Cevecheria, in Cartagena de Indias.
TREASURE HUNT The Lost City was unearthed in 1972 by treasure looters and has since been hailed a national gem by the Colombian government. But thanks to its remote setting, it has not become as touristy as Machu Picchu and the hike itself is nowhere near as well-trampled. The only way to reach it is by doing a five-day gruelling and sticky hike, sloshing through rivers, tackling steep hills, sleeping in hammocks and bathing in waterfalls, while fending off mozzies. Alternatively, it’s possible to visit the spot by helicopter if you’re willing to splash the cash (according to rumour, Colombian pop princess Shakira opted for this option). MEET THE LOCALS The site’s lofty position offers sweeping views of the lush jungle-clad mountains as well as revealing a sky alive with exotic birds and brilliantly coloured butterflies. Just below us is a clutch of pretty thatched huts, lived in by Tayrona Indian tribes, descendants of the Lost City inhabitants who watch over the city. The natives say they knew about this city long before it was ‘discovered’ in the 1970s, but unsurprisingly they wanted to keep this peaceful retreat to themselves. Our guide tells us that the city was built
THE DARK SIDE Unfortunately, the Tayrona Indians aren’t the only jungle dwellers. In the 1970s, vast swathes of forest near the Lost City were cleared to make way for marijuana production, later replaced by still-thriving coca plantations – large-scale operations that are guarded 24/7 by paramilitaries. During the trek, we are lucky enough not to bump into any gun-wielding guerrillas, but we do visit a cocaine lab. More akin to a garden shed than a hitech military operation, the lab is loaded with buckets of grubby chemicals. The farmer candidly outlines the process for making the nose candy, describing how workers pick coca leaves from prickly bushes under the hot sun.
The cocaine “ lab was like a garden shed ” “The workers crush the leaves with their feet for about an hour and they don’t wear clean boots,” he says, grinning. The leaves are then mixed with a heady blend of gasoline, water, calcium carbonate and salt before the gasoline is siphoned off. The final product is normally mixed with aspirin and other chemicals to give it a white colour. “If the final powder contains 25 per cent cocaine, that’s good,” he tells us. “It’s normally about three per cent.” This farmer produces about 1kg of cocaine every month, for which he is paid about $1000 (£617). He used to farm coffee but a friend suggested he would increase his earnings by producing cocaine. We are all struck by how grimy and unhygienic the production process is. Hit the hut in Tayrona National Park

“I do this tour to try to put people off taking cocaine,” the farmer told us with a smile.
BACK TO REALITY After our trek, we head to a small fishing village near Santa Marta called Taganga for New Year’s Eve. Music is pumped out of beatboxes propped up outside people’s houses and we spot numerous ‘guys’ which are burned on January 1 to mark the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year. Most of the ‘guys’ are clutching beer bottles and sporting huge erections. Up until that point we’d not seen a sniff of cocaine in Colombia, but that night at a club, my mate and I were quite surprised to see such a surfeit of wasted revellers. An American guy began to speak to me about his travel experiences. “Do you know which country I would really suggest that you visit?” he asks. “Where?” I reply. “Colombia” he says. “You must go there. It’s fantastic.”

IS IT SAFE? ■ The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) errs on the side of caution, advising against all but essential travel to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, including the ‘Lost City’. The FCO advice reads: “Armed groups are still active in this area, there is extensive cultivation of illegal drugs and the risk of kidnap remains high. While tour organisers may assure you that the trek to the ‘Lost City’ is safe, we do not believe it to be so ... the risk of kidnap remains high.” Sound scary? The FCO says 23,000 visits were made by British passport holders in 2010 and most visits to are trouble-free. ■ Take some comfort from the Colombian Tourist Authority’s catchline: “The only risk is wanting to stay”.
San Augstin’s stone sculptures
BEST OF THE REST ■ CARTAGENA: The walled city of Cartagena is one of Colombia’s top draws thanks to its colonial architecture, beautiful beaches and lively squares dotted with pavement cafes and top-notch restaurants. Enjoy a cocktail at Café del Mar, set on the historical fortress walls, overlooking the Caribbean Sea. ■ BOGOTA: Don’t miss the Botero museum to marvel at the Colombian artist’s paintings of plump people and objects: expect portly babies and dogs, plus-sized sculptures and even a chubby Mona Lisa. Don’t wander alone in Bogota at night; take taxis everywhere. For a dose of bling, visit the recently spruced up Gold Museum, loaded with thousands of gold objects found throughout South America, making it the biggest goldwork collection in the world. ■ SAN AGUSTIN: Sited in the south of Colombia, the San Agustin archaeological park is home to hundreds of monster-like stone sculptures carved between AD 100 and 1200. The sculptures are set within a picture-pretty park made up of lushgreen vegetation, forests and dramatic valleys. If you choose to visit the archaeological park, the Foreign and Commonweath Office suggests you enter and leave on the main road through Neiva. ■ TAYRONA NATIONAL PARK: Colombians refer to this idyllic national park as ‘paradise’ and for good reason. Home to mangrove swamps, corals, algae prairies and cloud forests, the park teems with howling monkeys, deer, condors, reptiles and even
pumas. The park’s highlight is its unspoilt palm-fringed beaches, reachable by walking for an hour through jungle. ■ CALI: Colombia’s undisputed nightlife capital is a hotbed of fiestas, street parties and sizzling salsatecas, the best of which can be found 12km east of the town centre in the Juanchito district. The most famous salsa “dance-o-dromes” include Chango and Agapito. If you fancy a bar crawl, swing by main drag Av Sexta Corridor, lined with bars and clubs pumping out hip-hop, reggaeton and disco. Those in the know say that Cali is home to Colombia’s most beautiful women. It’s also the plastic surgery capital of the world. Go figure. Fatty fatty boom boom

PROTECT YOUR MONEY! If you claim a tax refund, be sure to use a company bonded by the Association of Tax Agents (ATA). If a company is not bonded by the ATA and goes out of business, you could lose your refund. Also, we recommend you avoid agents who charge unusually low commission rates – three such agents have gone out of business in the last 4 years and clients, like yourself, have lost their money.

Rochelle, the beautiful French girl at Wimbledon Walkie on Saturday, March 5: You work
as a teaching assistant in Ealing. We talked about South America and London life. Not only are you a beautiful girl but you’re smart and funny too. Would love to take you out for a drink sometime. If you’re interested, please email rochelleatwiwa@hotmail.com. Marius, the Cape Town guy.

Andrew, my sexy husband:
No poems, no fancy words, I just want the world to know that I LOVE YOU with all my heart and I am the luckiest to have you in my life! Happy wedding anniversary for March 15. Lots of love, Lisa x Rachel Aitken: London will not be the same without you! You and I met in London 2006 and had some incredible experiences – from Cirque du Solei, O2 concerts (Bon Jovi rules!), Moroccan meals, Toast, Chicago and mini-breaks to Cologne and Cornwall. The next chapter in NZ will be fab though!! Can’t wait to see you soon in the Southern Hemisphere. Love Larissa xx Alfred or Alphie´s owner (we met at Marble Arch on March 1): Hello, I´m looking
for you because I didn´t have the opportunity to ask for your email, I would like to send you the photos of Alphie. If someone reads this message and knows the person who I´m looking for, please send me an email. My name is Mariana and that day I was with my friend taking photos. Details: Your dog loves to chase pigeons; I´m from Colombia; You have two

labradors and Alfred; You were recording a video for your university; You’ve lived here for four years; My friend said you probably are from Holland. Thanks a lot, I hope you´ll read this message jejej!!! Mariana. See tntmagazine. com/seeking. Happy birthday Jimbo: Hope you’ll have an awesome 31st birthday in London. Might not be quite as big as your 30th last year but hey, that might be a good thing :-). Wishing you lots of fun and shenanigans for the year ahead. The Lily Rd crew plus Jase and Dana. Lost Canon Exilim camera – reward offered: It’s a black
Canon Exilim camera with a green turtle sticker on the front. Less concerned about camera but memory card contains precious photos. Reward offered. See tntmagazine.com/seeking. Corey: So did you make yourself some pancakes for Pancake Tuesday in the end? Or let me guess, you stayed at The Slug all night? Yep, thought so ... :-). Anyways, thought you were a really nice and funny guy and would love to meet up with ya again
sometime. Drop me a line at franyisback@hotmail.com. Fran at the bar. Reply to ‘be my friend?!’:
Hi all, Kiwi guy here, just had a bunch of mates leaving plus always looking to meet new peeps. Going to gigs by yourself sux (but better than missing out) so if you’re keen to grab a beer or go see a show, gimme a holla. See tntmagazine.com/seeking. Desperately seeking males for mixed netball (West London):
Hey, we are in desperate need of some males for a couple of mixed teams that play on Thursday nights in Acton. Contact devinestorm@xtra.co. nz if you are interested – Cheers :-). Farewell Big Spoon: It’s been two years since you became our Degrees Of Separation Consultant. In that time, you helped us become bery crever indeed. We now know the liver is evil and must be punished; the joy of statue recreations and jump shots – of all variations; the pleasure of Yum Cha (not duck tongues!) and the delight of a Chowie lasagne. BBQs won’t be the same without you this summer
Desperately Seeking is a reader forum, and all messages should be within the spirit of the page; TNT cannot take responsibility for offence caused. No phone numbers can be printed. Messages may be edited for publication. See tntmagazine.com/seeking
– pass the tongs to someone worthy! While our livers and wallets will heave a sigh of relief at your departure, we bid you a sad farewell, but know we’ll catch you soon somewhere along the Yellow Brick Road ... Love from Churchill Castilians and (the remaining). Cling-ons... Erin, the blonde chick from Perth that I met at The Elk bar on Friday, February 25: You
totally rocked that dancefloor with your hot moves! You took my number but still haven’t heard from you. I hope that you’re ok; that you aren’t dissing me; and that you’ll phone me for a date asap. PS. Have still got your pink plastic bracelet if you want it back. Email jessiehowards85@ gmail.com. Jessie, the pretty-fly guy ;-) Sharone: Happy b-day for the 19th hon. Can’t wait to party with ya!! The peeps upstairs x Slutface: Can’t believe you’re heading home to Aus. You’ll always be a MY vacuum that sucks up lives and spits out shit. We’ve known each other for over 20 years, in this time we have never been friends merely forced acquaintances. Never forget that. Lost leather jacket at the She Bu Walkie on the night of the Waitangi Day pub crawl: Hey,
I lost my leather jacket at the She Bu Walkie after the Waitangi Day pub crawl and would really like it back! It’s a brown leather jacket, zips on the sleeves, no pictures or anything, pretty plain. If found it would be much appreciated if you could contact me. See tntmagazine.com/seeking. Thanks, David.
