War ... what is it good for?
I’m loving the call to end the war on, and legalise many, drugs. Adults could then use stimulants to enjoy themselves without the associated paranoia/ harassment of the police. Surely if a responsible person wants to expand their mind with chemicals or herbs, then they should be able to do so. Isn’t having a curiosity to experience a state outside the one you would otherwise be in 24/7 is a sign of intelligence? Watch all those fly-on-the-wall police programmes and you’ll find the common thread among offenders is alcohol. Politicians, give people more options and you may find violence decreases. Tax the ‘drugs’... whatever. Let us choose what we do with our minds. End the war. Coby, Greenwich

all, I miss your sincere notes apologising for the delays. But, alas, I do wonder if you are seeing others with your constant breaks from me on the weekend. Please when can we become serious and see each other on the weekends too? Jess, Willesden Green.
TO TRAVEL OR NOT TO TRAVEL That is the question I have floating in my head. With terrorist alerts set on high, Heathrow welcoming more high-profile dignitaries and celebrities than a highclass hooker with free champers and a doomsday ash cloud stopping all flights in its wake, I don’t know if it is safe (or worth it) to take advantage of weekends to head abroad. Actually, the above won’t stop me booking that last-

TROOPING THE COLOUR FREE WHAT: It’s one of London’s most spectacular royal traditions, with members of the infantry doing a whole range of fancy military manoeuvres to impress the watching monarch. Fortunately, it’s possible to enjoy all the pomp and ceremony without properly knowing what it’s all about. WHEN: June 11 DO IT BECAUSE: That whole stretch from the Mall down to Green Park comes alive with the trappings of tradition. You might feel a twinge of patriotism – even if you’re not British.

BFI: A top afternoon
Capital idea: British Film Institute The BFI Southbank may look as imposing as the British Museum or the National Gallery but, in its own way, casts just as long a shadow. For anyone new to these shores – or even long-term residents who remain curious – the BFI archives are an unimaginably rich resource of old films that record the way this country has changed. Whether you’re interested in how Britain looked during the wars or how they dressed in the 1960s, you’re sure to find
some priceless footage here. And it’s not like you have to go rummaging around a dusty attic – it’s all electronic and easy to use. They make for a fascinating afternoon and you can easily spend several hours immersed in them. They also stage incredible foreign film showcases – great for lapsed cinema studies majors. TS

BRITAIN EXPLAINED LONDON BY NUMBERS

Lord Sugar was around long before the UK version of The Apprentice. Born and raised in Hackney, Sugar droppped out of school at age 16 and started selling car aerials out of a van he bought with £100 of savings. When he was 21, he founded Amstrad, the elctronics company that made him one of Britain’s wealthiest men. His status as one of the country’s big-hitting technology tsars took a bit
of a battering, though, in 2005, when he declared that the iPod would be “dead, finished, gone, kaput” by the following Christmas. That didn’t quite work out.
Sugar also made a foray into pro football, buying Tottenham Hotspur in 1991 – he was unpopular with fans because he insisted on running the club as a business and Spurs failed to register a topsix finish in the league during his time as chairman. During his 10 years at Spurs, Sugar appointed seven managers. Of his unpopular decision to sack Terry Venables in 1993, Sugar later said “I felt as though I’d killed Bambi”. TS

London’s best beer gardens ... Summer’s going to be a scorcher, so you’d better make the most of it. Here, TNT selects the top city spots for alfresco drinking WORDS ALISON GRINTER Cheers!

ondon summers are so brief that you’ve got to wring every last bit of enjoyment out of them. That means seeking out a large, leafy beer garden where you can combine two very British past-times: drinking and getting sunburnt. Here’s our guide to some of the best pub gardens in town ...

There’s a Paula Abdul song called Opposites Attract that came out in 1989 and it’s all about a couple who get together despite being different in many ways. For example, he likes movies and she likes TV; she makes the bed, he steals the covers; she’s got the money and he’s always broke. It’s weird, because, in the video, Paula Abdul dances around and flirts with a

And then, at the high-point of our year, the re-enactment of the Battle of Hogwarts, she was aligned with the forces of Voldemort – I had no choice but to extinguish her flame with the Avada Kedavra curse. She didn’t speak to me after that, and after we got stuck into the butterbeers, she was seen shagging a bloke dressed as Draco Malfoy behind the Shrieking Shack.

HINCH’S SHAME Legendary Australian TV broadcaster, Derryn Hinch, 67, has been found guilty of four contempt of court charges for publicly naming two sex offenders, who were subject to court supression orders. It was during a ‘Name Them And Shame Them’ rally in 2008 on his website. He pleaded not guilty on the grounds that naming them did not ID them. ’The Human Headline’, who has liver cancer, has vowed to continue to out convicted sex offenders.
FHM’S MAN-LOVE Male model Andre Pejic has been voted by the readers of FHM Magazine UK as one of the top 100 most beautiful women in the world.
Yep, you read right. Pejic scraped in at 98. And, although in itself that’s kind of wierd, it’s not what has been getting fashion observers in a tizz. Rather, it was the comments of one of the magazine’s writers by the model’s entry online that captured his fans’ sensibilities.
“Pass the sick bucket”, one author opined at the idea of Pejic modelling for Victoria’s Secret. The magazine apologised but it hasn’t washed with Pejic’s manager, Matthew Anderson, who described the comments as “insecure and negative”. “If Andrej made the sexiest list, then they should just admit their readers thought a man was attractive and deal with it,” he said.

One ninth of Gentleman’s Dub Club on finishing their UK tour, being hunted by Robbie Williams’ agent and not being sent knickers
ENTERTAINMENT
Johnny Scratchley INTERVIEW CAROL DRIVER
23 You’ve just finished a 22-date UK tour. How was it? Amazing – 22 gigs in 26 days, which was a marathon, but amazing and very, tiring. We’re walking around dazed and confused. What were the best cities? Brighton, London and Leeds. The crowds were on it from the first note. The moment we walked on stage it exploded. What made them stand out? Getting to stage dive in those three gigs, although I nearly killed myself in London. You put a lot of trust in people when you do it, and I’m not a small person. Tommy the drummer said I jumped out and just disappeared, reappearing four seconds later. It was a little scary. What was the worst moment? Going on stage at our last gig in Southampton. It was the end of the road, half of us were ill or getting ill. I’d consumed far too much local cider in Plymouth the night before which turned my head into a painful burning flame. Luckily it turned around the moment we got on stage. There are nine in the band and you’re all suited and booted. Is it fair to say you’re the ska version of Glee club? Of what, sorry? Glee club? [Laughs] Oh, my word. I’m not really sure how to react to that ... I’d definitely say there’s more individualism within the group than that.
Getty Images
Who’s idea was that for the band, you look very dapper? It’s probably a bit of a natural reaction to our usual get-up – we were all a bit too scruffy to walk on to stage. We wanted to look sharp and fresh. It’s also nice to get dressed up. It’s part of performing. You’ve been pitched as one to watch this year by a few magazines. Does that put pressure on the group? Not at all. We absolutely adore it. The bigger
Scratchley, front right, with the group
it gets, the more fun it is. We’re very fortunate as we all met at university and started off as friends more than anything, so there’s a special vibe when we’re on stage as we’ve been playing for so long.
It’s nice to get “ dressed up when performing ” Is it true Robbie Williams’ agent trekked to Leeds to see you? Yeah. It was quite crazy actually. I think it was just on a bit of a whim. A friend of his recommended us, so he came and checked us out. He had an amazing reaction to us and signed us to his books. Did it feel as though you’d made it? As a band, we’ve taken a course that a lot of acts don’t take – we’ve put in a lot of graft ... We have known for a long time we’ll get the crowds to where they need to be. But to get the sort of recognition from the people who
can make those big decisions helps in a massive way is great. Which of this summer’s festival has got the best line-up? Glastonbury has got the big ones, but it’s gonna be difficult as we’re playing maybe five gigs there, so we won’t have much time. It’s gonna be good out in Croatia, there’s really good acts at Outlook festival. Were there any rows on tour? When you’re put in a small metal container for that amount of time with eight other guys, there’s bound to be silly little things. But we all realise that everyone with us is the reason we’re able to be here. And that we’re really lucky to be doing what we’re doing. So that keeps everyone in check. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve been sent by a fan? Nothing like knickers. Just very strange emails and Facebook messages declaring love, marriage, dirty weekends ... the usual.

With Shrek having retired, it is now up to high-kicking Panda Po to challenge the animation supremacy of Pixar at the box office. And does a great job in this funny, touching and visually spectacular sequel. We catch up with bumbling Po (Black) at a time when he’s comfortable in his role as the Dragon Warrior, protecting local communities from evil alongside Tigress (Jolie) and the rest of the Furious Five. The rise of power-mad peacock Shen (Oldman) offers a tough challenge for our furry hero, though, especially since the foe can shed some light on what happened to Po’s real parents. Following in the footsteps of awesome animated features such as Toy Story 2
He’s back: Kung Fu Panda
and Shrek 2, Jennifer Yuh’s film manages to outdo its predecessor thanks to some truly inspired vocal work. Black and Jolie build on the sterling work they did in the original but are outperformed by Oldman who is pitchperfect as the camp villain.
THE REEL DEAL Actress Cate Blanchett, pictured, has defended appearing in an advert backing the introduction of a tax on major carbon polluters in Australia. The Oscar-winner was accused of being out of touch with “ordinary Australians” over the role. In the “Say Yes” adverts, paid for by environmental groups, she calls on her fellow Australians to support the government’s move to tax big polluters to limit greenhouse gas emissions. Miss Blanchett, 42, said she was unsurprised by critics and would not be deterred.
While the film’s message is an obvious one – stay true to who you are – it is pulled off with such humour and heart that you can’t help but cheer on Po as he finds inner peace and saves the day. GOOD FOR: A laugh PIERRE DE VILLIERS Odd journey: Thomas Dekker

The titles of the two longdelayed prequels to Lord Of The Rings have been unveiled. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due for release in December 2012, while The Hobbit: There And Back Again is due to air 12 months later. The latter was the subtitle of the original 1937 book about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, while An Unexpected Journey echoes the novel’s opening chapter, An Unexpected Party. The £300m two-part prequel began filming in New Zealand in March.

By album number three it was clear the Arctic Monkeys had outgrown the swaggering indie rock that had made them household names. But Humbug, their Josh Hommeassisted foray into scuzz rock, didn’t exactly set the world on fire so Suck It And See sounds very much like a band returning to the drawing board. As such, it
borrows heavily from lead singer Alex Turner’s side project The Last Shadow Puppets with lots of cinematic flourishes and nods to 60s rock. But while early Monkeys grabbed you by the throat and dragged you along
despite yourself, Suck... merely floats pleasantly by. Even so, Turner’s lyrics are as trenchant and clever as ever with the line “Topless models doing semaphore” vying for best opening lyric of the year. ALISON GRINTER

For Jason Sawford, keyboardist in The Australian Pink Floyd Show, this moment arrived in 1994 when real-life Pink Floyd guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour visited him and his band backstage after one of their shows. “He just knocked on the door, popped his head around the corner – we didn’t expect it at all – and we went: ‘Oh my God it’s David Gilmour!’,” Sawford says. “So he

But, back in 1988, Sawford and his three other TAPFS co-founders came together in their native Adelaide, Australia, with no more grand ambitions than to perform the music of their favouite band. “We were just Pink Floyd fans,” Sawford explains. At the time he was studying biochemistry and the real Pink Floyd were touring their final album, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. “I’d never even heard of tribute bands at the time. It started out as a project, just something to do.” They toured Australia largely for fun, then spied the success fellow Oz tribute bands Bjorn Again (see breakout) and The Australian Doors were having in the UK and decided to have a piece of the action. (bassist), relocated to the UK where they still live. Brit members Alex McNamara (vocalist) Paul Bonney (drummer) and Dave Fowler (guitarist/vocalist) complete the line-up. Like the real Floyd before them, TAPFS live gigs are spectacular affairs complete with lasers, special effects, elaborate screen projections and the more recent addition of 3D technology. They performed in Battersea Power Station in 1997, the derelict landmark which graced Pink Floyd’s iconic Animals album, and their shows boast an inflatable pink pig and kangaroo, though neither of these have floated away as Pink Floyd’s pig famously did in 1976. Interestingly, a British Sunday Times
journalist credited Australia as “the main cradle of the tribute band ... Starved of big names, owing to [bands’] reluctance to put Oz on their tour itineraries, Australians were quite unembarrassed about creating home-grown versions.” Still, there are plenty of purists who dismiss bands like TAPFS as copycats or parasites riding on the coat-tails of the bands they are emulating. “There’s always been that snobbery that you have to play your own music to play music, but we’ve become such a name in the tribute band business that people respect us for what we do,” counters Sawford. “I like to think of what we do as like a classical musician who plays Bach or Beethoven as the composer intended and that’s what we do with Pink Floyd.”

WU TANG CLAN

JAMIE WOON
The hip hop revolutionaries who pioneered hardcore hip hop in NYC during the 90s will be on stage together in the UK for the first time since 2007. Expect to hear cuts from seminal albums Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and Wu-Tang Forever, which became the first rap LP to debut at number one in both the US and UK charts.
Despite being named by the BBC as one of music’s movers and shakers for 2011, Brit school graduate Jamie Woon remains something of a mysterious, media-shy figure. His otherworldly, dubstep-flecked music, as evidenced on debut album Mirrorwriting, is similarly enigmatic. Here’s your chance to get to know him.

Hoodlums

THE BUZZ SO FAR London’s Hoodlums first attracted plaudits
when they opened for Suede’s comeback gigs last year. Renowned for their swinging-from-the-rafters live sets, the quintet’s infectious indie pop is already being championed by the likes of radio tastemakers Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson. WHAT ELSE? Frontman Lou Vainglorious took a songwriting masterclass from Blondie’s Chris Stein at Rockness last year, so expect to hear new wave influences in their music. CLUB OF THE WEEK LED After making its debut on the capital’s summer festival scene last year, the London Electronic Dance festival returns in 2011. Rethinking its strategy, LED has shied away from the August long weekend this year, perhaps because of the horde of SW4 festival faithfuls who tend to migrate to Clapham Common in their thousands. Nonetheless, with names like Deadmau5 and Calvin “I Get All The Girls” Harris leading the line-up, it looks like this festival’s a stayer.

JOYRIDE BOARDER A skateboarder went on a peak-hour joyride through Melbourne’s busy Burnley Tunnel because “it looked like a nice road”. The morning stunt disrupted traffic and forced the closure of a lane in the tunnel. Metropolitan Fire Brigade officer Alan Morton said he spotted the skateboarder while driving to work just after 7.30am. The man, believed to be a tourist from Switzerland, who appeared to be unaware of the drama he had caused. “After I ordered him into the car I asked him what he was doing and he said and I’ll quote: ‘it looked like a nice road’,” Morton said. “He didn’t seem to have a clue that he shouldn’t be there skateboarding.” A police spokesman said the man was taken to The Alfred hospital with minor injuries and for observation.

A couple who sparked a major rescue operation after claiming their son had floated away in a helium balloon are to auction it for charity. Richard and Mayumi Heene served 30 days’ and 20 days’ jail respectively over the incident in 2009, which the world saw unfold over Sky News. Now they plan to sell the huge UFO-like craft which was seen floating over Fort Collins, believed to have their son inside. However, six-year-old Falcon was in their house, and the whole episode was found to be a hoax. They have made a video stating they will auction the inflatable to raise money for the Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief – and they expect to raise $1m (£610,000). YouTube is inundated with ‘hood videos’, bating rivals and showing gang allegiance
Some 200 gangs operate in the capital. Here, ex-members reveal why it’s getting harder to escape the city gangland WORDS FRANKIE MULLIN

O
ne of my friends was stabbed multiple times in the chest. Another person I knew was beaten to death by a rival gang. He was 16.” Such are the teenage memories of Fola Odebunmi, 25, who was in a Greenwich gang until the age of 20. The violence associated with these groups is regularly thrust into the limelight, the most recent cases being the conviction of 15-year-old hitman Santre Sanchez Gayle jailed for the murder of Gulistan Subasi in East London, and the accidental shooting of five-year-old Thusha Kamaleswaran in Stockwell. Between these waves of public reaction, for many, the existence of gangs in the nation’s capital remains a hazy concept. There are, however, some 200 gangs operating in London – some of which are split into still smaller feuding cliques. Delroy, 45, is an ex-gang member who now works with young offenders. He notes the proliferation of postcodespecific gangs that have sprung up since he was a teenage member of East London’s Hoxton Firm. “Now there are probably 20 gangs in what was once our area,” he says. “Young people say it’s easier to be in than out.” Odebunmi has also escaped the world of gangs and is about to start a job as a key worker, but he’s still understands how he was dragged into such a brutal world. Growing up in Hackney, then moving to South London as a teenager, Odebunmi says life at home was violent and the conflict he found on the streets mirrored that. “I was in a gang before I knew it was a gang,” he explains. “To begin with we
just played football, but we moved on to fighting, robbing and drugs. We’d rob people either by intimidating them or a group of us would rush one person. “In the nearest borough, another group of boys was doing the same thing and the next thing you know, you’re involved in gang warfare.” According to Tony Thompson, author of several books on the subject, this default entry into the world of crime is the norm. “Every street and estate is now split into gangs,” he says. “Just by living somewhere
attractive side of belonging to a clique. But words are not the same as actions and there’s a danger that teenage bravado can come back to haunt those who want out of gang membership. “By making videos, people are being branded for life,” says Delroy. “I’ve worked with a kid who got fired from his job when his boss saw him on YouTube.” Not only this, but traditional ways out for disadvantaged kids are rapidly disappearing as the recent spending cuts
London contains an estimated “ 200 gangs, some of which are split in still smaller feuding cliques ” you’ll be perceived as a threat by rival gangs. The only way to get any protection is to join yourself.” And, once in, leaving a gang is increasingly difficult. Try typing “London hood video” into YouTube and there, immortalised on the web, is a catalogue of film made by – usually teenage – gang members. Most of the videos feature groups of attitude-drenched boys rapping into a mate’s camera, bigging up their toughness and threatening rival gangs. Some, in which weapons are brandished, are more frightening. Police are unwilling to talk about gangs’ use of social networking, cautious of drawing attention to the showy, teen-
kick in. Hackney Youth Service has seen its budget slashed by 50 per cent, meaning that initiatives like its volunteers project, which played a part in helping Odebunmi turn his life around, face an uncertain future. “Jobs and training schemes are dwindling, benefits are being cut and young people are growing up seeing their parents and siblings unable to get decent jobs,” says Delroy. “Lots of people I work with say they’re fed up with being in a gang. “You realise these are normal young people who’ve been thrust into a violent world. “But real escape routes are being closed off.” It’s a sobering thought.

Tulisa: Will she behave on X Factor?
Frankie Mullin frankie.mullin@tntmagazine.com

G
obby, unashamedly rough-around-theedges new X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos has received a right slating from certain sections of the press. According to the Daily Mail’s Alison Boshoff, the 22-yearold N-Dubz star should be allowed nowhere near prime-time TV due to a self-confessed past as a drug-taking girl gang member. Boshoff frets that Contostavlos won’t be able to “control her wilder outbursts enough to front a family show”. But really? Really? Does she honestly think Contostavlos is going to fly into some sort of girl gang frenzy as she sits on the judging panel? An incident in 2009 has been brought up in which Contostavlos and her then-boyfriend were involved in a fight in which a man was stabbed. The singer wasn’t charged and Adam Bailey was cleared of any involvement. But apparently that is irrelevant. Either way, is the concern for this “family show” really that Contostavlos might start a fight? Pull Kelly Rowland’s hair? Punch Gary Barlow? Stab Louis Walsh? Of course not. Boshoff’s real complaint comes at the beginning of her article where she describes seeing Contostavlos drunk on an Ibiza beach with her “bleached hair, gold jewellery and huge
Next top model?
tattoo”. And now we get to the real fear. TV is full of drug-taking, boozing, shagging celebrities. It’s how half of them got famous. No, what Boshoff objects to is Tulisa’s refusal to “de-chav” herself a la Cheryl Cole. But Chezza could be said to have a “chequered” past herself. Don’t forget the National Treasure was convicted of assaulting a toilet attendant. Only she primped and simpered and “played the game”, whereas Contostavlos, as yet, has refused to do so, telling fans on Twitter that she “don’t no how to be anything other than myself”. X Factor fans (teen girls, not “families”) will adore her. “We love u simply cus u ‘get it’,” Tulisa tweeted. And they do. But Boshoff, if you’re that scared, maybe watch your back next time you see Contostavlos.

Bunce became an internet star when his profile page was retweeted by 1500 people and ‘liked’ 10,000 times on Facebook. “Thanks for all for the support ... I’m overwhelmed,” Bunce wrote. Bunce won’t win and half the comedy is that people actually seem to expect the “real” Roland Bunce to step forward. But no matter that he probably doesn’t exist, it’s still a small (but funny) stand against the tyranny of beautiful people.

MORE THAN A TRIPLE? The Kiwi who landed the world’s first triple back-flip on a BMX last week believes his best is still yet to come. Jed Mildon, 24, nailed the dangerous stunt at an event in Taupo using a purpose-built 20-metre-high ramp. “That was a 20-metre roll-in and I could handle going that fast (60 km/h), so I’m pretty sure we can make it bigger and better. You’re going to see pretty crazy things in the near future and I think this is only the beginning,” he said. Mildon described mentally preparing in the final moments before attempting the stunt as “surreal”. “I don’t really know that much what was going on around but the fact that all I wanted to do was pull really hard off that lip and land three flips which is what we achieved.” Mildon’s jump can be seen on YouTube.

Toulon rugby boss Mourad Boudjellal wants to put his new super-signing Willie Mason up against his former star Sonny Bill Williams in a boxing match in France. At 194cm and 115kg, Mason has 3cm and 7kg over Williams, but Mason hasn’t had a bout yet while Williams had his fourth pro fight over last weekend. The two former league sensations are mates off the field, and played together in the Bulldogs from 2004-2007 – Mason took Williams under his wing when the Kiwi initially made the Dogs’ first grade side. “It would be fantastic,” Boudjellal, who is confident of getting 8000 of people to such a fight, said. That’s because the racetrack offers a host of overtaking chances, and because its place on the schedule can be a turning point – good and bad – for drivers and teams in the championship chase. The big question will be if Sebastian Vettel, who has won five of the first six races of the campaign and leads the world title chase by 58 points from McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, can score yet another victory. There are fears on some quarters that the German’s runaway success could lead to a dip in interest in the sport, but Hamilton,
ever the scrapper, is convinced the fight isn’t over just yet. “I am always very quick at Montreal and he (Vettel) has got no high-speed corners to pull out on me there,” the Englishman said after the Monaco race. And Ferrari will introduce new parts to the car of their racer Fernando Alonso in the hope he will climb on to the podium again. Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali believes Alonso, who finished second in Monaco, will surprise the viewers by putting up his best show at the Canadian circuit. “We are not giving up. The situation in the two championships continues to become more difficult. But now we’re coming up on two races in which, on paper, we should be competitive,” Domenci promised.

A spot of jail may fix sports cheats

Pakistani cricket fans burn an effigy of Salman Butt after he was busted spot-fixing last year. Would a jail threat have deterred him?
Jahn Vannisselroy jahn.vannisselroy@tntmagazine.com

W
hen I was about 12, a classmate promised to give me his Pearl Jam CD if I bowled him a couple soft balls in a trial game for the school cricket team. I could generate a bit of swing back then and it was no easy feat to knock my bowling around. He wanted to impress his father who was something of a legend-in-hisown-lunchtime club player. I mulled it over and decided it wasn’t such a bad idea: I was guaranteed a place in the team anyway and to help out this poor kid was no hassle. Plus, that CD was a real clincher. These days you’d call such an arrangement spot-fixing, the smaller, less-visible cousin of the practice known as match-fixing. In 2011, these are now such a scourge of professional sport that Australia last week proposed jail sentences of up to 10 years for those involved in the practice, across all sports. It’s a move that should be welcomed the world over (except perhaps in Pakistan). When you or I watch a game, we want, nay demand, the thrill of absolutely not knowing what will happen. If it’s a scripted performance we seek, there’s the local theatre (or the FIFA World Cup hosting decision show) for that. Why
should we pay money for Sky TV or a match ticket when the result is already decided? Good work Australia, lock up those cheats. The three Pakistani cricketers caught in the News Of The World spot-fixing sting last year probably laughed all the way to the
Good work “Australia, lock up the cheats ”
bank. Their eventual bans became a joke when Salman Butt continued to make money on TV at the World Cup. The trio were prepared to gamble, knowing that the cash they gained would keep them comfortable, even if they were busted. The threat of jail may have made them think twice. And as for that kid who wanted
to make the school team: well, I stepped up to the bowling crease and sent him down a slow, looping delivery. The ball hummed through the air, the revolutions of the seam creating a blur as the leather orb pitched well outside off stump. The kid licked his lips and cocked his bat for an almighty slog. He swung like a champion but connected only with air as the ball hit the fake grass pitch and turned sharply, careening into his stumps. As he trudged off with tears in his eyes we both reflected on the lessons we had learnt. He now understood that if you’re not good enough, you’re not good enough, no amount of bribery can really change that. Me, well, I learnt always to get the payment first.

Only time will tell whether the Super League equivalent, pitting England against the Aussies and Kiwis playing over here, takes on the same mythic dimensions but it is unlikely any quarter will be asked or given in Friday night’s clash. Exiles captain Danny Buderus reckons the players are ready and raring to go for the inaugural hit-out, insisting that acting as pioneers is as much a motivating factor as bloodying English noses. “Hopefully it’s a success and guys who come across in future are keen to play,” Buderus says.
ENGLAND AGAINST THE REST REST Exiles captain Danny Buderus is ready to lead his team of Aussie and Kiwi expats against the host nation WORDS TOM STURROCK
The tough Australian defensive approach has worked its way into the Super League
NEWS & SPORT 47 Buderus is hoping for an Origin-like intensity
“People say that we’re going to be going out there to put one over on the Poms but it’s more about being pioneers of this concept and being part of it from the start.”
EXILES The Exiles are made up of players who forfeited the chance to represent their state or their country when they came to play in Super League, for whom the chance to take on England is an unexpected bonus.

It took a long “ time to let go of Newcastle ”
Chase, who has been probably the stand-out performer in the Super League this season.”
COMING OVER In 2009, when Buderus left the NRL to join Super League powerhouses Leeds Rhinos, he closed the book on a decorated career with Newcastle, where he stamped himself as one of the great hookers of the modern era. He played 220 games and captained the Knights, as well as notching 21 Origin caps for NSW; he played in the 2001 premiership and won the Dally M in 2004. “It took a long for me to let go of Newcastle, to get the place out of my mind,” he says. “But I came over for the right reasons and because I wanted to be adaptable.” Buderus is now part of the Aussie diaspora, accomplished players heading north in the twilights of their careers, enriching the English league. “With all the Aussie coaches over here, they’ve brought their style with them and encouraged that defensive side of the game,” he says. “It’s no better or worse over here – it’s just different.”
“There’s not that history yet but I think the main thing is that it makes you think how powerful the side is with the Aussies and Kiwis combined,” Buderus says. “We’ll prepare and play as though we’re playing for your country and it’s great for these guys to have another crack at representative footy.” And it’s not as though the Exiles are a pub side; indeed, for Buderus, the chance play alongside some of his decorated teammates is a major incentive. “Look at the guys you get to play with – Mark O’Meley, Steve Menzies, Matt King,” he says. “And the Kiwis who you’d never play with Super man: Rangi Chase otherwise, guys like Rangi
BACK HOME As a favourite son of Newcastle, Buderus has been keeping a close eye on the sweeping changes at his old
club, where mining magnate Nathan Tinkler has taken over and promptly poached legendary coach Wayne Bennett for next season. Some momentous on-field signings are tipped to follow. “I’m a footy nut and I have a big interest in seeing kids come through. I love seeing the Knights doing well,” Buderus says. “I’m really excited about what’s happening there. It will be great for the club and the community. It’s an amazing time, to have Wayne coming on board. Sounds like there are some good times on the way, but also a lot of hard work.” When Buderus runs out at Leeds on Friday night, though, the Knights will be the furthest thing from his mind, for he will have a new team to lead, another honour to add to an already long list.
INTO EXILE An initial 34-man squad was announced in April, which was then, in a novel innovation, whittled down with the help of the rugby league public. Voting will determine 13 of the final 22 spots, with a cap of three players from any one Super League club imposed on the 13-man group chosen by fans. Squad: Louis Anderson, Danny Buderus, George Carmont, Rangi Chase, David Fa’alogo, David Faiumu, Craig Fitzgibbon, Brett Hodgson, Matt King, Kylie Leuluai, Thomas Leuluai. Steve Menzies, Joel Monaghan Luke O’Donnell, Mark O’Meley, Tony Puletua, Pat Richards, Iosia Soliola.

Chris Grayling will unveil plans to get the jobless into work
49
ON THE JOB BELINDA SO Career Group fitness instructor Age 30 Lives Shepherd’s Bush From Sydney How did you get into your line of work?
I worked in an office for 10 years, but have always been pretty active as I have a background in dance. So, I decided to leave the desk job when I realised I was spending as much time at the gym as at work. It made sense, really. What do you do day to day?
I teach an array of gym classes such as spin, body pump, body combat and yoga, constantly pushing people outside of their comfort zone.
Long-term jobless rises T
he number of long-term jobless in Britain has hit a 14-year-high, according to new figures. Some 850,000 people now claim benefits – a third of the country’s unemployed. The analysis, by think tank IPPR, showed that 386,000 had not worked in two years and a further 464,000 had been jobless for at least 12 months. The figure is the highest since 1997. This is despite a fall
in last month’s short-term unemployment tally. IPPR director Nick Pearce said being out of work for more than a year could have a “scarring effect”. The worst hit long-term job hunters are the over 50s, but youth unemployment is also rising at an alarming rate. One in four 18-24-year-olds have spent a least a year out of work. Employment minister
Chris Grayling will next month unveil a £14,000 sweetener for employers to take on benefits claimants in a bid to get more people back to work. “Our new programme will start to turn things around,” he said.

MIGRATION SOARS
BANK JOBS AXED
Workers will be treated to an extra long weekend next year to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. A repeat of the royal wedding holiday will mark 60 years on the throne. The first Monday in June will be a day off, while the May bank holiday will move to the Friday.
The number of low-skilled workers, such as those in retail and hospitality, has more than doubled in the past nine years. It was driven by a 60-fold rise in migration from EU countries within Eastern Europe, which fall outside the government’s immigration cap.
UK banks are culling 1000 jobs a week. Barclays has made the most recent, shedding 500 jobs after Lloyds axed 360. RBS has cut 20,000 since it nearly collapsed in 2008. David Fleming, of union Unite, described the situation as “haemorrhaging jobs”.

the force: one big family
FEEL THE FORCE Like the sound of policing the streets? Become a volunteer copper and you’ll see a side of London you never knew existed WORDS REBECCA KENT
D
id you always want to be a police officer when you were little? If your dream was never realised, don’t give up just yet. You can join the 55,000-strong Metropolitan Police family as a special constable – volunteering for the force without giving up your day job.
DO A GOOD DEED Ask any special constable the best part of their role and they’ll tell you it is about making vulnerable strangers feel safe. That could be by responding to a domestic violence 999, protecting a bystander caught up in a street riot, delivering first aid to an accident victim or helping a pensioner across a road. ‘Specials’, as they are warmly referred to, are not simply consigned the duff jobs. “They have the same powers and uniform as regular police officers,” assures a spokesman for the Met. “But they’re just ordinary people who are prepared to give up at least 16 hours of
their spare time a month to do something positive for themselves and the community.”
WALKING THE STREETS OF LONDON Neil Dickerson, 29, works as a Blackberry specialist for Price Waterhouse Coopers by day. He now channels the gusto of his “hardcore” Friday and Saturday evenings with his mates into pounding the beat in Brixton and Lambeth, never quite
A FIRST FOR EVERYTHING As well as 80 hours of coached patrol, recruits undergo 18 months of training, covering everything from officer safety, report book writing and preparing evidence to court and, of course, powers of arrest. “I’ll never forget my first,” Dickerson says. “I was doing a plain clothes patrol Desk by day, on the streets at night

knowing what a night will entail. He says: “We usually start off by doing a high-visibility patrol in areas known for crime and respond to break-ins, then after midnight you’re mainly dealing with drunk and disorderly behaviour. People are generally cool and like a bit of banter. “I remember one day, a cab diver pulled up with a lady passenger who was being aggressive, but then she collapsed. “Our first aid training kicked in and we were able to save her. It turned out she was diabetic and had gone into a coma. Had she gone home, she’d have died.”
You could be policing protests
RUBBING SHOULDERS WITH STARS Policing is not only about dealing with London’s gritty criminal underbelly. Emine Ondal, 25, who has a desk job at the Met as a performance information analyst, has been a special for five years. She got a kick from patrolling the BAFTA awards last year. “My priority was obviously keeping the risk of threat away from all the celebrities, but, yes, there’s a chance you get a bit star struck,” she says.

GAME, SET, MATCHING THE TASK Certainly, it’s crowd situations that specials play a vital role. Now strategising staff placement for the London Olympics, The Police Federation has estimated 1000 additional officers will be required each day of the Games and are hoping most of these roles will be filled by specials. The force is planning to increase the number of recruits from 5000 to about 7000 by 2012. NOW WHAT? To qualify, you must be between 18 and 57, have indefinite leave to remain in the UK and have been permanently residing here for the past three years. You must also have a willingness to commit at least 200 hours a year. Some companies are willing to negotiate

days off for employees to commit to their duties, such as court appearances. The Met does warn that a number of occupations are incompatible with being a special, for example, magistrates, court clerks, politicians, soldiers and parking attendants. You must also be presentable, compassionate and have tact. If your application passes an initial assessment, you will have to perform a written test and an interview, then a fitness and medical test.
REAPING THE BENEFITS Specials don’t get paid, but they do get public transport for free when both on and off-duty. There are also unlimited transferable benefits. “Specials will experience new and different challenges every time they go out on patrol,” a Met spokesman said. “They’ll hone skills like problem solving, negotiation, communication and coping under pressure. Plus, they’ll learn more about life than most people will ever see.” Ondal agrees: “I have young brothers and sisters and part of the reason I became a special was to be able to provide a link between them and their peers and the police. So far, it’s been hugely rewarding.”

Ben Sparkes was a wide-eyed globetrotter when he first arrived in London from Australia eight years ago. Then aged 19, he recalls speaking to a roving TNT reporter who quizzed him on his travel tales. He described, still with his heaving rucksack on his back, how he was fresh from a ski season in France and Switzerland. “I couldn’t boil an egg when I got there,” he told us in 2005. “Now I know how to make really posh things like beef bourguignon.” What a difference eight years makes. Sparkes, 27, from Melbourne, who now lives in Crawley, near Gatwick airport, is a full-time police officer. “It was strange at first to see myself wearing the uniform and the helmet. “Although I had friends who were policemen back home, I never really thought I would become one, too – especially not a British bobby as it’s seen as quite a novelty.” Having been in the force for two years, after serving in the British Territorial Army, Sparkes notes his role in the recent Trafalgar Square student riots as a career high-point. “It was insane to turn up and see thousands of people throwing bottles. “It was scary and exciting all at once. But you always look out for your colleagues and they look out for you, and that’s what it’s like being in the force – you’re part of a big family,” he says. The job has even taken him to New York to run a half marathon with the NYPD for charity. You’ll usually find Sparkes on the beat around Brick Lane, but having also worked in other corners of the capital, he says not even his travels could have prepared him for the array of cultures he has encountered on the job – besides the odd Australian, of course. “I’ve met a few who have had a bit too much to drink and have told them to move on from the street. “It’s hard, because I was that person once!”

COOL CAMPING Pitch up in ancient forests and dreamy beaches by visiting Scotland’s hippest campsites WORDS ROBIN MCKELVIE

Camping SCOTLAND
I
once thought camping was something best left to scout groups. Then I was commissioned to research the book Cool Camping: Scotland. Over the course of writing two editions I have been blown away by the great campsites dotted around my native land; locations that qualify as cool due to their sweeping Atlantic beaches, ancient forest areas or aromatherapy oil-infused saunas and funky hammocks, rather than any official rating system. Here are my favourites:
BEST FOR CYCLISTS Where? Comrie Croft Tucked away in serious cycling and mountain biking country in Highland Perthshire, Comrie Croft even have their own trails and rent out bikes. This innovative self-styled ‘eco-camping’ retreat boasts the snug treat of staying in their Swedish kata tents. Scotland has been voted the world’s number one mountain biking destination, and in this corner of Scotland it is easy to see why. See: comriecroft.com BEST FOR TREES Where: Rothiemurchus If you love trees – no, I mean really love trees – then Rothiemurchus is the site for you as you can pitch right amongst the ancient Caledonian forest that used to

BEST FOR GETTING AWAY FROM IT ALL Where? Applecross There are not many campsites worth losing your car over, but Applecross is one. My car engine surrendered as I attempted to tackle Scotland’s highest road, the Bealach na Ba (The Pass of the Cattle), to get to this ultra remote spot. If it happens, you won’t mind later when you are taking in the epic views across to the Isle of Skye and the rugged Cuillin mountains. Sipping on a cold
Scottish ale here on this grassy meadow as the sun bursts over the jagged Cuillin ridges and smoulders into the Atlantic, the modern world feels very far away indeed. See: applecross.uk.com/campsite

BEST FOR CHILLING OUT IN A HAMMOCK Where? Lazy Duck If you are into laidback cool then the Lazy Duck, a bijou four-pitch site, is the place. The moniker emanates from the resident Aylesbury ducks who are so lazy they cannot be bothered to hatch their own eggs. Humans tend to feel similarly relaxed here with hammocks tempting in the heather, a Tarzan swing made out of an old boat buoy, a sauna soothed by essential oils and an unusual outdoor ‘bush shower’, – an ambitious attempt to bring a slice of Africa to the Highlands. See: lazyduck.co.uk. BEST FOR IF YOU WANT TO CHEAT A LITTLE Where? Mabie Forest To the south of Glasgow, Mabie Forest is perfect for those who want to cheat. You don’t have to struggle to pitch your tent as you can stay in either their Iron Age roundhouse reconstruction or their tipi. Both are ideal for groups as you can hire them for exclusive use – the roundhouse sleeps 16. There are a range of walks in the forest and a high rope course at the site, as well as a web of Lovely cup of tea

BEST FOR WALKERS Where: Red Squirrel, Glencoe Tucked in perhaps Scotland’s most scenic glen, Glencoe, this campsite is surrounded by mountains. There is everything from easy low level walks, to rugged trails and on to serious rock climbing. The legendary Clachaig Inn awaits in the evening with hearty portions, ales and tall walking tales by a roaring log fire. See: redsquirrelcampsite.com BEST FOR BEACH LOVERS Where? Invercaimbe Some of the finest sunsets in Europe melt across the sands here. Enjoy the fiery oranges and reds with a backdrop of the Small Isles. A bit low on facilities, but with a sweep of pristine sand and those views, you don’t need much else. With mile upon mile of unspoilt white sand you can easily find your own slice of idyllic beach. See: invercaimbecaravansite.co.uk BEST FOR WILD CAMPING Where? Glen Etive For real outdoor types, wild camping is the only way to go, just choosing a site in a remote spot and pitching your tent. Scotland has long enjoyed a relatively liberal attitude to camping and land access compared to England and Wales (see mcofs. org.uk for the ‘rules’). Glen Etive is wild camping heaven. Just leave the main Road to the Isles and tumble down the glen towards Loch Etive and you enter a world where man feels very small.

WINNER LITTLE LAUGHTER Jane Garfoot, from Australia
Children are deceptively hard to photograph. Put a camera in front of them and they either break out into a cheesy smile or they run away. This natural shot has a playfulness about it. There is a cheesy grin from one boy but it hides genuine embarrassment for his chum who is hiding his face behind a shoe. The whole thing is rounded off by
the other two children, who seem to have forgotten the camera and are more interested in their friends’ reactions. The school doors and bags set the scene and the dappled light adds to the shot’s charming atmosphere. HOT TIP: Get down to the same level as your subject. For full length shots, your lens should be level with your
subject’s waist for the most natural effect. » Jane wins a three-day tour of Scotland worth £218 from Haggis Adventures (0131 557 9393; haggisadventures.com). Must be taken within three months of receiving prize letter.

Be aware that the light on the bridge and the light on the scene it frames can be markedly different, so expose with care. » Matthew wins a course voucher from Nigel Wilson Photography (020 7793 8664; photographycourses.org.uk) valued at £60.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR PHOTOS STAND OUT
THEME: SHOOTING THROUGH WINDOWS Mt Rigi, Switzerland by Krystyna Mailer from Australia Shooting through windows, although not ideal, is sometimes the only option. Krystyna managed to inject some of the drama of the journey and the vehicle she was travelling in with this snap through a window.
TRAVEL 63
WHY THIS WORKS: 1 The slight tilt of the camera complements the curve of the track making the viewer feel as though they too are tilting with the train. 2 The inclusion of the overhead lines create dramatic diagonals which sweep you into the image.
3 The curve of the track also leads the eye into the shot adding to the sense of precarious drama. 4 This wonderful light scene has minimized reflections. 5 The trees on the snowy hillside offer contrast and emphasise the crisp whiteness of the snow.
HOT TIPS: 1 Use a lens hood if possible to minimise reflections and press the lens right up to the glass. Shooting at an angle to the glass can give a distorted effect. 2 Make sure the glass is really clean. Rub off any smears or dirt before shooting.
3 Wear dark or black colours to minimise your reflection in the glass. 4 Switch to manual focus to avoid focusing on the window or a reflection in the glass and do not use flash. 5 A polarizing lens can help. Use a circular polarizer and turn it to see the effect.

is far less developed than in the south of France, and it provides ample opportunities for anything involving boats or waves, not to mention a stunning array of seafood. Add to this Brittany’s Celtic heritage – introduced by folks fleeing Britain ever since Roman times – and it has as much in common with Wales, Cornwall and Scotland as it does with mainstream France. So, if you enjoy outdoor activities and great food, you’ll love this truly distinct part of the country.

Brittany’s maritime landscape
t’s with good reason that France receives more foreign tourists than any other country in the world. Great food and wine, vibrant culture, beaches, mountains, thriving cities and idyllic countryside – it’s all on offer. But on the Finistere peninsula, jutting out into the Atlantic, is Brittany – a province that is as enticing as the rest of the country, but with its own distinct language, culture and geography. MUST-SEE TOWNS Two of the best towns to experience atmospheric Breton heritage are St Malo and Dinan, in north-east Brittany. ■ St-Malo was once home to pirates who made a handsome living raiding ships plying the English Channel, but these days it’s far more genteel. The walled city (Intra-Muros) is home to restaurants, bars, cafes and shops, while walking the ramparts provides great views, both to the old town (which looks the part even though most of it was rebuilt after WWII bombing), the beach below and the nearby beachside suburb of St-Servan. At low tides wander over the causeway to the Fort National (open to the public and summer), or have a picnic on the Ile du Grande Be. ■ A few kilometres away is Dinard, a pretty seaside resort, famous for its striped bathing tents. It’s a classy place with a stylish promenade. Equally enchanting is Dinan, a walled city overlooking the River Rance. With timbered buildings, cobblestone streets and a ye olde feel, it’s a great place to get lost in its narrow streets.

Firstly, sign up to airlines’ e-newsletters and look out for their sales. Next, consider flying via Madrid or larger American airports to find some cheaper options. Remember, the larger cities served by more airlines will usually be the cheapest destinations. The more carriers that fly there, the greater the competition and the cheaper the price. Agents use software which starts with a date or month so it’s difficult to search a range of possibilities. You can, however, gauge some prices and options online first and then head to an agent with your findings to get a good deal. Go to matrix.itasoftware.com’s ‘month to view’ option of lowest fares and start plugging in possibilities. You will soon find a number of flight options and prices which vary by date. The site will show you the cheapest route and airline combinations. You can’t book flights more than 11 months in advance so bear this in mind planning your return journey. Spend some time looking at the different month’s prices and then go armed with your information to your travel agent.

I would suggest you travel less and concentrate more on the area around Albania, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Include Montenegro in this itinerary too. Belgrade will be an excellent place to start your trip. The quaint Stari Grad is perfect for strolling – with the occasional cafe and museum to break up the day. Don’t miss the 19th century Palace of Princess Ljubica to see Balkan style architecture, then get outdoors and explore some of Serbia’s stunning countryside. The region of Zlatibor has some great walks. Next, Bosnia-Herzegovina is dotted with achingly beautiful and historic towns – try Mostar and Jajce. Take a break on one of Montenegro’s gorgeous sandy beaches. Petrovac is a very pretty resort but expect it to be busy in high season. After recharging your batteries, head to Albania’s capital Tirana for vibrant nightlife in the Blloku area. Finally, experience the gorgeous Albanian landscape with great views from the Mount Dajti cable car.
I am going to South America in autumn for five to eight months. I’m very flexible in terms of when and where to fly to. How can I find the cheapest deal? Angela, via email
Q
Try to arrange your travel bookings so that you arrive at your destination by late afternoon, if possible. This allows for delays and permits changes in further plans at short notice. Arriving in a new city late at night should be avoided as it is a stress that can spoil the freedom and fun of independent travel, particularly if you’re travelling alone.
TRAVEL NEWS Fatty boom boom: beer bellies are a big turn-off on the beach
TRAVEL 67
BIG GUTS HARD TO STOMACH Women sporting hairy armpits and men with bulging beer bellies have topped a list of offensive beach sights. Other repugnant holiday looks include socks and sandals, visible foot infections, men in thongs and sunburnt children, according to a survey of 2000 people by Scholl. Travellers also voiced their disapproval of unkempt bikini lines, men in speedo-style swimwear, women with unflattering muffin tops, tattoos on older people, builder’s bums and moobs. Good news for Australian, Italian and Spanish beach-goers – those polled reckoned they were the sexiest nationalities when stripped down to their bathing suits, while four in 10 people reckon that Brits look particularly bad on the beach.
A third of those quizzed think folk should keep covered up unless their have taken full care of their appearance from top to toe, including manicured nails, shaven legs and well-kept feet. More than half (54 per cent) of those surveyed said they can’t stand it when people dare to bare when they haven’t bothered to make an effort with their personal appearance. “Unflattering outfits, unsightly bodies and inappropriate clothing are all a bit of a turn off when you go down to the beach for a day of relaxation,” said Charlotte Brown, Scholl UK’s senior brand manager. “The last thing you want to be presented with when trying to enjoy a bit of British sunshine is someone else’s wobbly bits or nasty-looking feet.”

Tourist tokers out in the cold? Tourists will be banned from Holland’s coffee shops if new anti-drug laws come into effect. The legislation has been branded “tourism suicide” because many foreigners are drawn to the country for its cannabis-selling cafes. But far-right politicians argue the coffee shops attract the “wrong” type of visitor, known as “drug tourists”. “They block streets in the city centre, they don’t respect parking rules, they are noisy and, when they go from one

Monarch has scrapped fees on passengers paying by debit card. Consumer watchdog Which? has welcomed the move. “Over 42,000 people told us they want to see an end to excessive card fees,” said Rochelle Turner, head of research for Which? Travel.

The accommodation website has decided to give the cash to either the British Red Cross, Oxfam or WWF, with the two runners-up each receiving £1000. People can choose their charity on any of Hostelbookers’ six Facebook pages. Voting is open until June 22.

Don’t be shy about haggling; it’s an essential, and expected, part of the process. Shopkeepers will often want you to enjoy a cup of mint tea with them as you come to an agreement on a price. Effective discount plays are to say you’re from Africa or Eastern Europe and a student. Walking away can often bring

EXPLORE THE SAHARA DESERT For the ultimate Arabian adventure, do a camel trek across the never-ending palm-tree dotted dunes of the Sahara desert while watching the blazing sun go down, changing the colour of the sand from cinnamon-yellow to blood-red. Camel rides often include the epic Erg Chebbi, an eye-popping gigantic mountain of sand that has inspired much myth and legend. sky, an experience offered by several operators including Intrepid Travel and On The Go Tours. The Berbers were the original inhabitants of North Africa, a people who managed to retain their traditions and culture despite the invasion of Arabs, Romans, Phoenicians and other tribes sent to conquer the tip of the continent. Most Berbers live in Morocco and although many have moved to the cities, three groups live in the Rif Mountains, the Middle and High Atlas ranges, and the Sahara.
a price down dramatically too. Beware of pushy market sellers who try to corner you in their shop in an attempt to force you to buy. Never be bullied into buying something you don’t want!
GET SCRUBBED CLEAN IN A HAMMAM Don’t expect an entirely soothing experience when visiting a hammam (traditional steam bath), which can be found in luxury hotels and riads. You’ll be given a no-holds-barred scrubbing with black soap, which will wipe away any trace of dirt or tan, before having a bucket of water thrown over you, and then sweating it all out in the sauna. The experience is normally topped off with a soothing massage, so you leave feeling rejuvenated and super-clean.

tour of the film sets. Also meriting exploration is the fortified city of Ait Benhaddou, an 11th century Unescoprotected kasbah which provided the backdrop for Russell Crowe’s swashbuckling Gladiator movie. The well-preserved town marks the start of the road of a thousand Kasbahs, known as one of the world’s oldest trading routes. It’s freckled with ancient Kasbahs with buildings built from mud and straw, while olive and date palmeries break up the dry desert landscape, along with small markets selling prickly pears and watermelons. Sex And The City 2 was filmed in the recently opened Mandarin Oriental Jhan Rahma Hotel, in Marrakech, although the movie was set in Abu Dhabi.

Monkey madness in Marrakech
mighty High Atlas mountains, home to terraced crops, snaking rivers and Berber villages. The wild and rugged peaks of North Africa’s highest mountain range, some of which top 4000m, can be reached from Marrakech in two hours, and can be explored by hiking, mountain biking or horse riding. Visit as a day trip from Marrakech or spend a few days trekking through rugged terrain and camping in rustic Berber tents.
STAY IN A RIAD Beautifully decked out with colourful cushions, lanterns and mosaic-tiled floors, riads are traditional Moroccan houses set around a courtyard and are normally situated near the souks in the middle of the medina. Many have rooftop terraces with reclining seats, which afford views of the medina. Riads cater for everyone from budget to money-is-no-object travellers. In cheaper riads, expect rooms to be small and simple with a curtain (if you’re lucky) separating the bathroom and bedroom. If you find the prospect of no bathroom door terrifying, you can either banish your other half/buddy from the room when you need the loo or start singing when on the throne. Luxury riads offer hammams, terrace pools, whirlpool baths and plush rooms (with bathroom doors). Book through hostelworld.com or hostelbookers.com.

sizzling aromas from the open-air food market made up of pop-up stalls with gas fires, where cooks are dressed from head to toe in white, and cheery waiters will vie for your custom with promises of “Asda price” tucker. Eating here is a no frillsaffair – you will sit on plastic benches, but the food is delicious and the prices are low. Food ranges from brochettes (meat skewers), salads and couscous to fish and snails. Agree a price up-front to avoid getting ripped off.

VISIT TODRA GORGE The looming cliffs of Todra Gorge, in the High Atlas Mountains, make a rugged contrast to the lush-green landscape. Watch your back for oncoming motorbikes and mules if you walk through the canyon at its narrowest point, surrounded by 300m cliffs. The soaring rock face can also be explored on a horse-riding excursion.

Del: “Come ‘ere I’m gonna make you smile” is a surprisingly good chat-up line and your bedroom door has become revolving with a constant stream of (lovely???) ladies, all of whom are very accepting that you have a neurological condition that means you cannot remember their names in the morning. Chances are you’ll be reading this while enjoying some “just eat” chicken goodness, piecing together your day out at The Church/Walkie where, you will, of course, have spat in a few faces and whipped out your wooden spoon. You may not have the “trifecta” to your name, but as the dirty housemate, the jury is out on whether you’re a champ or a grot. Happy birthday Del :) have a good one. To my dearest Alex aka Big Dong: You are the apple of
my eye, the pumpkin in my pie, the icing on my cherryflavoured cake. Happy 31st birthday. Thank you for being such a wonderful, supportive boyfriend – you are the wind beneath my wings! Love Annie Honey Bunny. PS: Thank you for you the ride of my life. Chicken: My UK adventures are now over but my travel plans certainly aren’t. Enjoy your summer travels and everything the UK has to offer over the next couple of months, as it comes and goes so fast. Love, live, laugh, remember. Ever since you came up to me on the dancefloor and whispered in my ear (you thought I moved like MJ and Usher) you’ve made me laugh. See ya soon.
post your message at tntmagazine.com/seeking or email seeking@tntmagazine.com Aussie guy with the tight fluro green shorts at Rugby 7s on the Saturday: I pegged goggles
at you and they got you in the back of the head. Good shot, aye? I also dance as good as I throw. Many more of my talents come from there – *wink wink* – and I’d be pretty keen to show you. You were with a bunch of Aussie mates who looked like they were in a swimming team. I hope you’re keen to hook up. Give me a shout out here. Rubber Ducky. Zennon, the Australian brewery worker who crept out of my bed last Friday night:
Thanks for breaking my drought, but I wish you would have let me cook you eggs in the morning. Sorry you had to encounter my flatmate Kylie. If it’s any consolation, I copped it, too. Next time we go STRAIGHT to the bedroom. I hope there’s a next time. You were something else. You know where to find me. Jo. Lost sunnies: I lost my prescription Guess sunnies at the She Bu Walkie on May 22. They were in a white case and the sunnies are brown with a crystal set in the side. Great
love romance friendship... tntmagazine.com
Looking for travel buddies to go to Download with, or to meet up with at the festival:
Keen to go up on the Friday and leave the Monday morning. My friends are either lame, or can’t stay for the Sunday night as they need to be back at work on Monday. Get in touch! Tntmagazine/forums Looking for pals – my age: I am a 21-year-old Kiwi girl working as a nanny in Southwark. I have been here about two months and have been meeting people but everyone seems to be a lot older then me! Looking to meet people in who want to have fun, go out drinking and dancing and exploring at the weekend! I know that there are heaps of people in the same boat. Also, I love to travel so definitely want to plan some trips away in the future! My email is: rebeccaleejefferson@ gmail.com. Ruby you dirty slapper: Thank god you’re leaving. London

might finally get a chance to replenish its cider stocks. Nah, seriously, we’ll miss your dirty knickers, and your ability to scoff three peri peri chicken burgers for a snakebite. Legend. Have a wicked time on your van tour. I bet you’ll be the last (wo)man standing at 100 Club. Smash it. The Quix club. Filty Ed: I have to be honest, I meant what I said to you in the Grand Union. You are kind of ugly and you do need your teeth fixed. But – and maybe this makes me some sort of freaky pervert – I think you’re hot as hell. This is the thing, I was drunk and it came out wrong. What I wanted to say was that you’re skanky and slightly deformed in a SEXY way! Please please get in touch with me minging boy so I can stick my tongue in your (slightly waxy) ear. Miriam. Happy birthday Mr President:
You da man, Cowie. Have a top birthday next week. Let’s. Get. On. It. Tick tick ... BOOM. Beefcake: Big Brad’s skedaddle back to Oz equals sad faces all round. I’ll be lost without you, you cuddly love bean. We’re gonna give you a proper send-off next week though, so hope you’re prepared. The last three years with you have been ace. I’ll miss you so much but here’s hoping the next six months go quick. Your fluff ball, Jen. Gaddie: Let’s have dinner ... but not together. You have yours and I’ll have mine but we won’t brush our teeth. We’ll meet afterwards and lick each other’s mouths out – bits of food and all – and play guess what I ate. My god, I can hardly wait.
