Foreword

Dear Colleagues, The festive season and year’s end are fast approaching. Other than last year this time, we have all reasons to look back excited at an excellent year, one of the best in our history and we are very optimistic when looking ahead to the upcoming year. We lost a lot in 2009, although we fared better than some of our competitors, we even gained market share, but we did not have to write red figures on a global scale thanks to our joint efforts and the dedication and commitment of our team from all over the world. This year now we reap the fruits of our seeds. We are a leaner company, we have worked hard to reduce our Accounts Receivable and we have managed to keep most of our customers and even gained back some top clients like Federal Mogul and this all was paying off in 2010. We will probably have an increase in turnover at around 40% and an increase in Gross Profit of about 23-25%. We were hoping, that our combined efforts will make this a better year, but we could not envision a success like that and again and very important, we were able to increase our market share. Of course, we cannot lean back and just be happy to have a result like that. We have to continue with our focus and stay close to our customers and offer the right solutions. We need to listen carefully to them and ensure that we are the customer oriented company we want to be and we both are confident we will achieve just that. The year 2011 most probably will be difficult, not because we expect again a collapsing global economy, but because it is always difficult to follow a successful year. Our expectations are high, and the

Jost Hellmann

budgets reflect that. It will be hard work, and we know that. A lot of determination and focus will be needed to achieve our goals. We will do whatever we can to assist and help, by seeing customers and by making sure we will have the right systems, like Helios internally and Hellogic as our global operational system, which everyone, including our partners will have to have. Recently, in September, we held the 22nd Worldwide Meeting of our global Network in Chicago. We had a great Meeting and we were eager to meet again, after we dropped the 2009 Meeting, and to discuss mutually the way forward and renew friendships and make new contacts. We are sure it will pay off, as it did in the past. The year 2010 is almost over. Many of you will take time off and spend quality time with and within your families. The festive season is always a good time to thank you all for your hard work, commitment and dedication. Without our great team globally we would not be here and it makes us proud to head such a great team. All the best to you and your families, no one can do without them and they are a major part of our success. Happy Holidays and a successful, healthy and excellent year 2011 in both your private and business life.

Worldwide Meeting – Success through Change D

ue to the global economic turmoil in 2009, we had decided to skip the Worldwide Meeting 2009 and rather focus on getting through the difficult times in an amicable way. Of course this ensured that many colleagues very much looked forward to this year’s Meeting, which was held, as originally planned for 2009, in one of the great cities in the world, Chicago. 250 delegates, representing 92 countries, were present and since many countries had an excellent result for the first half of 2010, the mood was great and the spirit running high. The motto of our Meeting, “Success Through Change”, clearly fit into our days. Without making changes, without adjusting the way we do business, without changing our focus, we would probably not have made it through a difficult year 2009 relatively unscarred. Jost Hellmann stressed in his speech, that

hellmann partner 03/2010 02/2010

“change is the only constant in life“ the one thing more or less affecting all of us, throughout our lives, be it privately or professionally. He furthermore said “circumstances are changing all the time, all of a sudden a door closes, but if you have the right attitude and if you are ambitious and hard working, doors will open up for all of us again.“ Well there was certainly no change in our approach towards each other. Although 67 delegates were with us for the first time, they were integrated fast and enjoyed the meeting days and the social events in the evenings as much as everyone else, if not more. As the host country, our colleagues from Hellmann USA were present at all times, not only during the regular meeting hours but particularly during the evening hours and they ensured that everyone felt just great and welcome. They were guides in many ways, as peo-

ple wanted to experience what the city of Chicago has to offer. Many people who only knew about Chicago from Al Capone movies and similar were very surprised how beautiful this metropolis at Lake Michigan is, and I am sure some will come back with their families. Roger Haeussler presented an update about the activities of Hellmann USA and it is great to see how things are

turning around to the better, with vastly improving numbers, reasonably low turnaround of staff and the pride our colleagues rightfully take in it. It is a great team with a great spirit! Our Agenda included, as usual, guest speakers. David Croft of Chep, one of the US’s largest customers introduced his company, our cooperation, stressed 

important necessities for a good cooperation and gave an outlook into what the future may hold for both companies. Why don’t you have a look into his complete speech, which is posted in our ‘Library’, like all the other presentations . Our friends from Lufthansa, Juergen Siebenrock and Mario Blumenroer and two gentlemen from FedEx completed the guest- and speaker list from outside our Network. Entertainments, i.e. social events, are playing a very important role in all our meetings. It is instrumental that we meet casually, on a social level, not only in Board- or Meeting rooms, because this is the way to mend fences, to create new friendships, to bond with the colleagues abroad, and I truly believe we have achieved that over all the years. An evening cruise on Lake Michigan, Chicago style music bands (Blues!), native American/Indian dancers and singers (First Nations as they say in Canada) and of course great food – steaks in Chicago are legendary – made it easy for all of us to feel comfortable and have fun. Some delegates said, from a professional standpoint, this was one of the best Meetings we had. I don’t want to take anything away from that, or the

previous meetings, but of course this is difficult to tell, looking back at 21 Meetings before that. Next year we will have a little questionnaire to get opinions and then know better where we stand. In any case, the Meeting was a great success and again perfectly organized and run by Sara Subirana, for who it was already the 12th Worldwide Meeting as an Organizer and Event Manager. My thanks also to my entire Network Headquarter Team, particularly those present in Chicago, Enrique Montealegre, Jorge Rivero, Roger Juarez and Mario Werner, who all have different jobs, but this is a team effort for us and they were all working long hours behind the scenes. In the next edition of the Partner Magazine I will give you an idea about the effort and workload, when writing about ‘Worldwide Meetings behind the scenes’. The ‘Bluez Brothers’ from Chicago made this a memorable Farewell Event, and if only we would have had more female delegates, the dance floor would have been packed. We will see us all again in 2011 for the 23rd Worldwide Meeting, in South Africa. Michael Claus NWHQ Miami

HELIOS crop 2010 M

any beads of sweat and enormous efforts are lying behind us, but our long and extensive preparation was really worth it! Back in 2009, about 300 of our colleagues in two countries were working with our new HELIOS work environment. Just one year later, we now already have more than 1,600 colleagues in almost 30 countries working with it. Right at the beginning of this year, we rolled out our two pioneer HELIOS modules: With the help of the new sales tool for Customer Relationship Management (“CRM”), customer visits can now be planned, contact reports can be created and new business opportunities can be maintained. The Customer Data Management (“CDM”) module offers one consistent and uniform customer database for all customer master data across all countries, all areas and all products. For the HR department we could also yield heavy crops with the implementation of the third HELIOS module Human Resources (“HR”). The main components of this new HR system are People Adminstration and Absence Management. Our HR departments enter all relevant employee information into the new system and therefore create a digital personal file for every Hellmann employee. So far, so good! This year is coming to an end and we, the HELIOS team, would like to say thank you to all of our regional colleagues, who coordinate

Team Europe (f.l.t.r.): Cornelia Kunsleben, Stefan Pfeiler, Susanne Beck, Oliver Wilkens

our HELIOS rollouts on site, and have supported us all along. Together, we make sure that all affected employees will be sufficiently prepared for the upcoming changes. Therefore, every employee will be supported throughout the whole transformation by comprehensive and appropriate information (communication) and familiarization (training).

Perspective 2011 In 2011 we are planning to introduce two more HELIOS modules for another 1,800 colleagues which will increase the number of Hellmann employees working with HELIOS to over 3,500! We would like to start off the new year with a very special project. Over the past few months, we have been working on extending the above mentioned Human Resources module in a way that it will soon be relevant for every single Hellmann employee in Germany. This “extension” of the HR module is called “HELIOS Self Service”. In the area of Human Resources the term Self Service describes a program through which every single employee is responsible for maintaining his or her personal data. Self Service consists of three parts: Employee Self Service, Manager Self Service and Performance Management. Ever since mid-November, our colleagues from the IS, including eCommerce and Process Services, have already been working with the

sonal development over the course of time. Besides Self Service, we are planning to implement HELIOS Finance („FIN“) in Germany in May 2011. Hellmann and pco to win coveted ECR Award O

n 22 September 2010 GERRY WEBER International AG received the coveted ECR Award 2010 in the category “Corporate Cooperation – Supply-Side” at an event in Hamburg, Germany. The prestigious jury awarded GERRY WEBER and their project partners the prize for successfully implementing their innovative “RFID for the Textile Supply Chain” project. The ECR Award honors outstanding corporate cooperation consistently focusing on consumer needs. Together with its partners, GERRY WEBER International AG launched the “RFID for the Textile Supply Chain” project at the end of 2009 for its entire international supply chain, using RFID to optimize logistics and retail processes. The goal of the winning project was to provide a textile RFID label combining anti-theft security, manufacturer care information and an Electronic Product Code (EPC), directly into the production process for all 25 million pieces of clothing made by the GERRY WEBER International AG brand each year. “By changing production procedures, incorporating our logistics partners and optimizing both warehouse logistics and retail processes, as well as cooperating with our wholesale customers, we INFO-BOX

The ECR Award ECR stands for „Efficient Consumer Response“ – and means consistently focusing on consumer needs. This year GS1 Germany awarded the prize for the 8th time. The ECR Award for corporate cooperation is given to ECR projects which demonstrate excellence in cooperative management for the benefit of consumers and the economy. There are two awards – one for supply side projects and the other for demand-side projects. The ECR Award for the Entrepreneur and Individual Company categories is given to those who consistently recognize the long-term merits of ECR and implement its philosophies.

gain many advantages in all areas of the supply chain,” ex-plained Christian von Grone, Project Manager and Head of IT and Organization at GERRY WEBER International AG. In order to achieve a common approach and maxi-mize cost savings, GERRY WEBER is dedicated to using and enforcing EPCGlobal and GS1 standards. All project partners were involved in the pilot phase and both Modehaus Jost and the HOUSES OF GERRY WEBER have been using RFID technology for managing goods on the shopfloor since November 2009. Avery Dennison, the global leader in innovative product labeling, developed the textile care label. Logistics companies among others Hellmann simultaneously implemented RFID technology at their distribution centers in Germany and abroad. Hellmann and another logistics company are responsible for transportation management from China to Germany. The new technology, which goes beyond retail security, has led to huge improvements in logistics processes. The Electronic Product Code makes it easier to record both hanging and stacked GERRY WEBER garments and improves the transparency in the logistics chain. RFID speeds up processes for incoming goods and stocktaking, so store employees are less involved in the process and have more time for customer service. Shrinkage has also gone down. The company has an accurate overview of its stock levels at all times and is able to make adjustments faster and more accurately. GERRY WEBER International AG, with more than 382 HOUSES OF GERRY WEBER worldwide and more than 1,800 shop-in-shops, is the first company in Germany to use RFID throughout its entire supply chain process and as a retail security technology. Hellmann introduces new road freight services O n 1 October 2010, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics expanded its delivery options for road freight from Germany to Great Britain and Poland. The introduction of new services to these two countries is just the start of our plans to improve our service throughout Europe. Since October, in addition to the standard dispatch service, customers are able to opt for a “Priority“ or “Fixed date“ service, which can be combined with a 10 a.m. or 12 a.m. service in selected zip code areas. The “Priority“ service provides guaranteed delivery on the first possible date, in compliance with the standard delivery time, while the “Fixed date“ service gives users the choice of delivery date (with due regard to the minimum delivery time), and in conjunction with the 10 a.m. or 12 a.m. service, also the choice of delivery time.

In cooperation with the cargo network System Alliance Europe, of which Hellmann is a founding member, the services are to be extended across Europe in the future. System Alliance Europe and Hellmann Worldwide Logistics thus aim to cater for the ever-increasing importance of ontime deliveries within Europe, and to offer our customers greater flexibility and planning reliability. Details of the zip code areas for which the new services are available can be found on our website under: http://www.hellmann.net/europa. Markus Dodt Hellmann Osnabrueck

International Logistics Management I

n July Hong Kong played host to the final full module of the ILM programme ahead of the final examination in February 2011. This module had a strong focus on International markets and Law combined with intercultural awareness. The fourth module was opened with an address from Regional Director for Asia, Mark Hellmann. He talked to the group about the current and future developments that were happening within his region. As we were fortunate to hold this module in the Asia region, the participants spent two days on intercultural awareness, not only learning the theory but also taking advantage and sharing their own knowledge from the many different cultures they all represent. This was facilitated by the Global People & Change team and the local external training company ICE. During the first week, Steve Lee, General Counsel AMCS region, joined the group for two days to introduce and discuss the important topic of the Anti-trust laws, foreign corrupt practices and negotiation skills. He went through several case studies highlighting how big this topic is and how it will affect all employees worldwide. Nicholas Boone, Professor for Logistics and Production at the University of Applied Science Ostwestfalen-Lippe who joined the group at the end of week one, introduced the group to the methods of how to explore new markets with a focus on our own Hellmann Industry solution markets. In the lead up to module 4 we asked our participants for their feedback on what they would like to have

more input on during their last full module. Consequently we invited Katherine Kampmeyer and Ada Chau from IS Customer to present to the group our full range of Hellmann IT solutions in more detail, in order to help them present solutions to their customers more competently. This also coincided with a two day sales training from our training consultant Tim Haslam, Lammore Consulting. Tim went through the ‘Single Sales Principle’ with them, helping them to identify Hellmann’s unique selling proposition. During the second week we also gave the participants the opportunity to go through a `Dry-run‘ in preparation for their final oral examination in February. The participants were able to gain concrete feedback from our DLA (Deutsche Logistik Akademie) professors to help them understand what is required to

Pascal Bolte, Hellmann Miami “4 of the 5 ILM modules have been completed now. When asked to identify the one thing which stands out about the ILM programme, it is not the individual lectures, the leadership training, the key note speeches, the project work or the field trips. It is the combination of all these items that are almost silently incorporated in our day-to-day work. Looking back to the first module, it is impressive how the work ethic and quality has improved. Each group presentation is done more professionally and with more confidence of being a great logistics manager/consultant. Looking at my personal development as well as the group development is great inspiration and motivation for the next module as well as for the time between the modules.”

& Leadership Programme Journey Doninha De Castro, Hellmann South Africa “ILM...wow, what an experience! Coming from a financial background I have gained an enormous amount of operational knowledge, self awareness, confidence in my ability, but also to network with colleagues I only see in the Hellmann Partner magazine. The cherry on top was the interaction with these people, travelling & learning about the different countries & their cultures in which the training was held. If this opportunity ever comes your way, grab it with both hands!” pass the examination next year. The group was also lucky enough to not only have a site tour of Hong Kong Cargo airport, one of the busiest cargo airports in the world, but to also have a key note speech from our customer Atif Malik from Levi Strauss & Co. He talked to the group about the key challenges they face with international transportation, customs-brokerage and trade preference programmes. We would also like to say a special thank you to Paul Goldsborough (Global Business Development Manager) for talking to the group about being an “Englishman in Asia”, Ben Hui (Senior Vice President Airfreight China, Hong Kong) for not only presenting “China – The opportunities and challenges” but also his kind hospitality, Katherine Kampmeyer (IS Customer, Germany), Ada Chau (IS Customer, Hong Kong), Steve Lee (General

Counsel AMCS), Lucia Fung (President Seafreight) and Stephanie Cheung (Global People & Change, Asia) for their time in helping to make module 4 a success. Now we are reaching the end of our first ever International Leadership & Logistics Management programme. Therefore, it is important to hear from some of the participants about their journey over the last 18 months. During February 2011 the participants will have their final examination in Osnabrueck, therefore we would like to wish them all the best in their preparations for their last phase! Jacques Roux, Hellmann United Arab Emirates “I feel so proud to have been a part of such a talented and diverse group of people. I have gained so much knowledge, not only from the external subject matter experts and Hellmann guest speakers, but equally from my fellow ILM‘ers. It has been so rewarding being able to transfer the knowledge and experiences gained back into my everyday work and to share these with my colleagues in UAE. We have been constantly challenged through various tasks and projects both as groups and as individuals, testing our learnings along the way, and now we prepare for our final examination in February of next year, when the inaugural ILM programme draws to a close.”

he Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour is a very well known 110 km cycle challenge that takes place in and around Cape Town, South Africa, each year. Roundabout 30,000 Riders come from around the world to participate. Well known cyclist Lance Armstrong also participated this year. Jens Schutte, Chief Financial Officer from MA Automotive Rosslyn (Pty) Ltd., one of our automotive clients, participated for the first time this year. Jens said: “I am not a regular rider but in January this year my friend, who usually enters this race every year, asked me if I wanted to participate in his place as he had to go on a business trip. Not really knowing what I would be in for, I accepted and he lent me his bicycle. Being a little unfit I started training regularly and going to spinning classes 3-4 times a week and cycling for about 2-3 hours every Sunday to practice for this grueling race which took place on 14

hellmann partner 03/2010 02/2010

March this year. For me it was all about having fun to see whether I could actually stand up to the challenge and complete the race. Having never participated in a race of this kind before, I was unseeded and therefore started fairly late in one of the socalled open groups. My results were as follows: n Total time taken 4 hrs 20 mins 48 secs n Average speed 25.31 km/h n Overall position 8,977 out of 28,976 n Position in my group 7th out of 407 riders I must say, I really enjoyed the race even though the wind was extremely strong (at times, over 60 km/h), so all the hard training paid off. My special thanks go to Hellmann who kitted me out in Hellmann colours and which incidentally, as you can see, blended in perfectly with the colour of the bicycle!“

Hellmann delivers extensive logistics solutions for Özler Plastik S ince 24 November 2010 the warehouse of Hellmann in Lehrte is the replenishment warehouse for Özler Plastik.

For more than three months the Hellmann branches in Lehrte/Hanover and Istanbul intensively operated with their customer Özler Plastik in this project. The first shipment was so successful that the continuous supply could be implemented only after a short project phase. After Özler Plastik was appointed a supplier of an important Northern German automobile manufacturer, the company was looking for an internationally established logistics company with long-time experience. This is why they addressed us. “In order to import his goods, our customer’s alternative was the foundation of a branch and a private limited company. This would have caused high investment costs. We found a solution that enabled Özler Plastik to start short-term and with

low costs. The company now is able to serve its customers on a daily basis.“, says Senol Kocdemir, Route Development Manager Turkey, Hellmann. Özler Plastik’s high-quality and technical plastic products are shipped from Istanbul to Lehrte by Hellmann. Stored in a consignment warehouse, the products can be released by the automotive company. This coordination is directly handled by Hellmann and the automotive company. “Hellmann quasi became the virtual branch for Özler Plastik.“, says Felix Scherberich, who is responsible for the Supply Chain Management and Contract Logistics in the European Board of Hellmann. Men in OLYMP focus on Hellmann A

nother six months of cooperation between OLYMP Bezner GmbH & Co. KG from Bietigheim-Bissingen (district Ludwigsburg/Baden-Württemberg) and Hellmann Worldwide Logistics conclude with very positive feedback from the customer. After a two-year break in procurement logistics from Asia, the two companies started working together again in May 2010. Although all service features argued for Hellmann, the leading shirt producer OLYMP had decided in favor of a considerably cheaper alternative in 2008. It is in difficult times that the true quality of a partnership shows. And this is what happened in the first and second quarter of 2010. No dependable space was to be found on the vessels from Asia. As dialog between OLYMP and Hellmann had continued the shirt specialist remembered the positive experience with Hellmann and confronted Uwe Riechel (Product Manager Fashion Europe) from Hellmann Fashion Logistics with a real challenge.

Important on-time goods had to be delivered punctually to the retail market and Hellmann could see to it. The subsequent cooperation shows that the price remains an important component, but particularly flexibility, service, and communication are extremely important for OLYMP in order to fulfil their own and their customers’ high expectations. Marcus Bartholomae (Production Planning Executive) thanked Andre van Rijckevorsel (Branch Manager Stuttgart): “You set standards! This is exactly why our companies match perfectly.“ Since that time the cooperation has been expanded far in excess of the initial sea freight imports. Uwe Riechel Hellmann Hanover

Chile Earthquake – Thanks to the F.A.M.I.L.Y

T

he Chile Earthquake occurred off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile on 27 February 2010 at 3:34 am, rating a magnitude of 8.8 Richter Scale and lasted 180 seconds. It was strongly felt in 80% of the regions of the country. The cities experiencing the strongest shaking were Aurauco, Coronel and Talcahuano, closely followed by Concepcion. The earthquake triggered a Tsunami, which devastated several coastal towns in South-Central Chile and crippled the port of Talcahuano. According to the press, Tsunami warnings were issued in 53 countries, causing minor damages in the Hawaii and San Diego, coastal areas. The earthquake was so powerful that it moved the

city of Concepcion 3.04 m to the West and the capital Santiago 24 cm to the West. Already by Sunday night, 28 February 2010, we had the good news that all of our staff and families had survived. The following days our emergency team followed the disaster plan and ensured that all installations and systems were operational and established temporary offices/operations where necessary. We proudly like to mention that our operational system had not suffered any damages in contrary to many of our competitors, which were without systems for days in some cases. In the meantime we changed offices in Concepcion and we are about to move back into our Santiago airport office.

19

On the humanitarian side we kept regular contact with our staff in Concepcion as well as our customers throughout the region and organized aid shipments to whoever was in need. We shipped goods such as: Water, rice, noodles, canned food of all kind, chocolate, batteries and flashlights just to name a few. After all that´s what we do for living. Logistics! Even though life goes on, this natural disaster has left many scars and footprints and no doubt will be remembered and also visible in many years to come. We restarted to provide logistics to many customers, who are rebuilding and repairing their installations, stocks and plants. However, many companies are still regrouping, assessing damages and working with the insurance adjusters as well as Government offices in order to restart their business. A rebound of business is expected sometime early in 2011. We have received an outpour of wishes and requests about our well-being and we have received several generous donations to aid the personal losses. The total sum of all donations was matched by Hellmann Chile as well as by the Hellmann Regional Latam office and even though we were unable to cover all un-covered personal damages by 100%, the donations made a real great impact.

Company Picnic 2010 in Poland T

he beginning of September was not very optimistic – the weather was fitful and the less days to the picnic remained, the more rainy and cold it was getting. But what could we do? We could not cancel the picnic due to the bad weather.

Tongue-in-Cheek Sports Contest. Some of us who were more tired after the long journey took a seat, while the remaining group counted to ten, formed ten colourful teams, made up their names and battle cries and started the competition to win the cup. The competitions were not very complicated, but they required team-work – and this was the idea.Whoever had the most points would win the contest. The winners were members of the team in grey T-shirts – i.e. the team proudly called “Grey Beetroots” consisting of: Marta Christa, Celina Tusk, Alicja Boguszewska, Wioleta Kołodziejczak, Beata Sztybrych, Piotr Wirth, Marcin Siemiński and Dominik Szczerbiak. When the contest was finished, a Football Game begun with teams from departments in Wrocław, Stryków and Raszyn. After a stiff competition and loud cheering, the team from Raszyn won the game. Next were teams from Wrocław and Stryków. Then we had a barbecue and sat by the fire. Those with vocal skills enjoyed karaoke. And in the morning ... even more beautiful weather. Those who felt cold after the night in wooden cottages could really warm themselves up. After the breakfast – shooting-range and driving quads, cake, coffee and back home … And from Monday it was pouring once again.

Beata Rucinska running through the tires

Advance payments were made, a hotel has been booked since June and food was waiting. I was hoping that the weather would be favourable for us, as usual. And it was indeed – from Saturday morning on, the sun was shining! “Somebody up there must like us”, I thought and I took my Wellingtons out of my rucksack, got into my car and drove to the rallying point in Raszyn. We arrived at Koszelówka on time, the Zdworskie Lake was beautiful, the weather wonderful and employees from Stryków and Wrocław were already waiting for us. Due to name tags, we could easily identify one another. After lunch (we had to queue for our meals for quite a while), the program activities begun. At the beginning – The winning team

New healthcare packaging solution H ellmann Healthcare Logistics, the new vertical solution of Hellmann Worldwide Logistics has teamed up with temperature-controlled packaging specialists, Cool Logistics India Pvt. Ltd, to develop a specialist solution for its airfreight services from and within India. Pharmaceutical supply chains have become more complex over recent years due to a focus on globalization and outsourcing strategies by many multinational pharmaceutical companies. Companies look actively at opportunities for growth in emerging markets and this has had a direct impact on their supply chains, namely longer lead times, whereby consignments are handled by a number of stakeholders across multiple regions with variable ambient temperatures. These primary distributions are a significant risk to the manufacturer as they tend to be higher in volume, both in shipment size as well as in monetary terms than secondary distribution. With temperatures reaching up to 50 °C in the summer and a lack of temperature controlled holding and storage facilities available, maintaining temperature at 2-8 °C and 15-25 °C is one

of the biggest challenges in India and the choice of the right packaging is an integral part of the pharmaceutical supply chain strategy. It is for this reason that Hellmann Healthcare has consulted with Cool Logistics to introduce a new, locally manufactured, passive temperature-controlled packaging solution. Hellmann Healthcare’s packaging solution in India is to cater for the transportation of goods via airfreight in the pharmaceutical supply chain. Maintaining a temperature-controlled supply chain from the beginning to the end of the distribution is the key. Cool Logistics is working with Hellmann Healthcare in the design and validation stages, through to the manufacturing of the temperature-controlled packaging itself. The new passive temperature-controlled packaging solution is an innovative alternative to existing products. Hellmann Healthcare Logistics is always looking for new approaches and solutions to support our customers in the pharmaceutical industry. The passive element of the packaging minimizes external intervention, reduces the requirement for temperaturecontrolled transport modes, increases the product volume shipped and will reduce overall freight costs. The fact that the systems will be manufactured in India allows us to provide a cost-effective solution and ensure very short lead times to deliver the material to the shipper. As part of the end-to-end supply chain solution, Hellmann Healthcare Logistics offers transport management, warehousing services and inventory management, value added services, purchase order management, packaging solutions, cold chain management and international, regional and local distribution to customers in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device sectors.

Hellmann Brazil focusing on Oil & Gas Industry D

uring the Bilateral Talks at the Worldwide Meeting in Chicago, we have confirmed with our colleagues from Argentina, Canada and USA the potentials that involve the Oil & Gas Business in Brazil. In week 37 just after our arrival from Chicago, we were pleased to welcome Jan-Oliver Schmidt – VP in Projects and Branch Manager in Houston – at our office for the Rio de Janeiro Oil & Gas Trade Show, where we had the chance to place several sales calls in Rio de Janeiro and Macaé, in order to define mutual targets for the future. Macaé is located 270 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro. It is the main area for oilfield operators and it is also the city where PETROBRAS and its suppliers are located. During his eight day stay with us, we had the chance to learn a lot about projects and to place many sales calls at the following companies: Apollo Tubos,

Saipem, Oceanearing, National Oilweill, Serimax, UTC, National Controls, Oils states, SBM and K 2. We also had a chance to visit the International Airport Cabo Frio which is the most potential airport for Oil & Gas Industry considering its brand new airport, built to support Oil & Gas Industries because of its closed location from Macaé. We hardly believe that we can do much more in terms of participating on this important market where projects and customs clearance services are highly demanded. We are working together to reach the target of getting new accounts. In June 2011 the important Oil & Gas Trade Show will take place in Macaé and we do believe that it will be a great chance for Hellmann to become a reference in terms of quality services to this important industry in Brazil. Online Container Disposition – New function in Hellmann Portal A

customer’s call at Hellmann in Bremen: “When will the three containers from Israel arrive? And the container from Hamburg from this morning has to be delivered directly to the branch and not to the main storage. It is still wrong in the list…“ Many of us know this problem. Different information channels and contradicting data. But especially for our customers with multiple daily containers, a plannable and reliable disposition of carriage is important. In the past there were lots of phone calls and data were exchanged via e-mail, but for some time this process is supported by a new portal function: Online Container Disposition. In cooperation with a customer from Osnabrueck, a mature program originated from an initial idea. At the beginning it was an individual customer solution, but in the meantime the Online Container Disposition became a universally applicable tool for all customers in the division of sea freight import FCL container. In the past, a list of incoming containers had to be created manually and mailed to the customer, but now the program filters all containers of a customer’s shipment and displays them clearly and sortable by different criteria in the Hellmann Portal. Both, the customer and Hellmann, are working on the same data base. As soon as a container is arriving, it is instantly provided for the customer with all relevant data. Should the ship’s arrival be delayed,

hellmann partner 03/2010 02/2010

it will be instantly considered and the deployment date will be refreshed. Thus, the customer always has the latest data. Each container has a distinct disposition status which eliminates mix-ups and misunderstandings regarding the arrival dates or times. In the past, a container could, at times, be “forgotten“ and thus creates avoidable costs, but now the system has the ability to inform the user about important events or pending actions with the help of a traffic light system. Further on, the customer can save various individual data for each container. The system has no limits. Should the shipment already contain information about the items it contains, the customer is able to find and dispose his specific container by searching for these information. A direct connection to the Data Warehouse for the purpose of creating reports, the ability to export to different formats and the integration into up- and downstream processes signify a profit for both parties. Naturally, the customer can and should directly talk to his Hellmann contact person, as some things are best discussed in a personal conversation. But with the consistent data base, it is now possible to talk the same language and to concentrate on the contents. Katja Schueer & Hans-Hermann Hunfeld Hellmann Osnabrueck

Mark Hellmann celebrates his 30 year Anniversary at Hellmann M

ark Hellmann began his training at Hellmann Osnabrueck on 1 October 1980. As a 20-yearold man, coming from Canada without knowledge of the German language but full of curiosity about forwarding, his ambition enabled him to speak the language fluently within two years. By 1983 he had become well acquainted with the Export, Incoming and Outgoing Groupage and Scheduling Departments, and passed his Forwarding Merchant’s exam in 1984 with a straight A! His first car in Osnabrueck was a bright yellow Toyota Starlet, with which he paraded the streets of Osnabrueck. He spent the first weeks of his stay with Undine and Klaus Hellmann, where he shared their current love for ice cream. The provisions in the freezer were usually at a worryingly low ebb … After four weeks, Mark moved into the neighborhood of his cousin, Jens Hellmann, Jost’s younger brother. From then on the two ‘great buddies’ were often to be met in the Osnabruecker nightlife scene. The “serious life” began for him after finishing his

training. Following a short training period in Hamburg, in order to learn about sea freight, Jost Hellmann asked him to go to Hong Kong for one year! That one year has turned into thirty. Mark was able to establish an excellent airfreight team in the initial years in Hong Kong, and was brilliantly supported by Lucia Fung and Carol Tsang. With much empathy, he has managed to understand and respect the Chinese mentality and has, thus, very successfully developed business, not only in Hong Kong but also on the entire Asian continent, for Hellmann. The most recent years have seen the acquisition of the Indian subcontinent. Mark is not only recognized highly by his employees, but also by his customers who have trusted and supported him for many years in Hong Kong. Mark is the father of three children. Today he is President and CEO for Asia as well as being a member of the Main and International Executive Boards.

Special Environmental Award goes to Hellmann I

n October of 2010 Hellmann received for its entry “it greens so green...biological garden on its facility“ an award for special achievements 2010 from the Lower Saxony Bingo-Environmental Foundation. “Usually people think of a forwarder‘s facility as a dead, dirty, concrete covered area with no room for animals or plants“, says the Chairman of the Foundation, Ms. Anne Zachow, as she handed over the Award in the guesthouse of the Lower Saxony Government. Hellmann‘s award entry under the motto “it greens so green“, convinced the jurors and they awarded this special award to Hellmann outside the regular competition. Hellmann was the only company, which received an award and a certificate as special recognition for environmental awareness. This is remarkable as logistics companies are not always ranked at the top in environmental matters and sustainability issues. The entry, says the Minister of Environmental Protection, Hans-Heinrich Sander, is so interesting that he would love to see the facilities with his own eyes. He looks forward to visit Hellmann where one can see most of the time blossoming and green flowers, bushes and trees. Hundreds of blossoming narcissus in spring, other

plants and green wine in summer, large trees, wild wine is giving the feeling of a nature like, environmentally friendly facility. With an almost 7.000 sqm large grass and flower roof one can see also from atop that this is an ecologically friendly and green industrial facility. Since establishing the environmental management system in 1996, but also already before that, the owners of the company were always interested in an ecologically friendly and nature like appearance of the facility. Even if on an older industrial facility no garden in the true sense could be created, it has always been possible to plant trees, bushes and flowers so that the facility has also a positive and colourful appearance, which is helping the staff to feel well. For Hellmann‘s environmental team which took off already in 1993 it has always been the goal to create together with the Management a truly ‘green concept‘ which is continually progressing.

AEO Certificate for Hellmann Polska

From left: Krzysztof Maryniak, Marta Christa, Jolanta Dula, Krzysztof Krasiński and Dorota Mizak

O

n 27 September, our company was awarded an AEO Certificate no. PL AEOC 440000100047 by the Customs Chamber in Warsaw. Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) is an entrepreneur who has one of the AEO certificates specified in Art. 14 a of the Executive Regulation:  AEO Certificate – customs simplifications,  AEO Certificate – security and safety,  AEO Certificate – customs simplifications / security and safety. Having been granted the AEO Certificate – customs simplifications, our company can benefit from the following simplifications:  Easier access to customs simplifications specified in customs regulations. In the case of verification of sim plifications that have been used so far as well as in the case of motion submission concerning the use of simplifications, customs authorities will not repeatedly control conditions to be fulfilled since these have been already controlled in AEO certification process.  Less thorough physical and documentary checks ascompared to other entities (which means that the AEO certificate holder is assigned a lower selection coefficient for customs shipments and the customs clearance is faster.) However, customs authorities can decide oth-erwiseif there occur special hazards or control requirements set forth in other community regulations. AEO Certificate is accounted for in a risk analysis that con-stitutes the basis of the control process.  Giving priority for AEO certificate holders in the control process (if several shipments of entities without any AEO certificate are also selected for the control process, the shipment of our company is award ed a priority)  On request, customs control can be carried out in a place other than the customs office (AEO certificate holder can file the petition for customs control to be conducted in some other place, e.g. in the place with easier access to the goods or with lower costs of customs clearance or unloading). If agreed with a competent customs authority, controls may be carried out in a place other than the competent customs office.

hellmann partner 03/2010 02/2010

Additionally, Polish customs administration has taken several steps to implement additional simplifications regarding organisation and technical issues that consist in:  Priority handling of customs declarations lodged – this regards faster acceptance and handling of customs declarations (if appropriate organisational measures are in place in the given customs office unit)  Priority handling of all petitions and requests – all petitions and requests for licences, certifications, etc. filed by AEOs should be given priority  Special service desks for AEOs – wherever possible, customs departments, offices and chambers will offer separate service desks dedicated to AEO certificate holders. These service desks will be designated with an AEO logo.  Separate traffic lanes – wherever possible, at frontier crossing points there will be separate traffic lanes dedicated to Authorized Economic Operators. These lanes will be designated with an AEO logo.  Newsletters sent to AEOs – important information, e.g. on changes in regulations, or instructions and clarifications, etc. will be sent by designated customs officers to AEO’s e-mail addresses.  Security obligation – customs authorities will not require any security, which can be demanded as per customs law regulations, without prejudice to the Regulation of Minister of Finance of 22. April 2004 regarding circumstances where security can requested by customs authorities, and except for customs procedures concerning goods considered to present increased risks as specified in Annex 44c of the regulation for the implementation of the Customs Code. We have to emphasize that without effort of many people it would be impossible to obtain the AEO certificate and at the same time to create the indispensable Information Security Policy. Without hard work of Jolanta Dula, Dorota Mizak, Marta Christa, Krzysztof Maryniak, Krzysztof Krasińsk and Dariusz Kośka and many other employees we wouldn’t have had AEO certificate now.

Secondary raw material export to the People’s Republic of China A

n event organized by the bvse (Federal Association for Secondary Raw Materials and Disposal) and Hellmann in cooperation with the CCIC (China Certification and Inspection Group) Bremen. That was how we imagined the event. “We”, that is the C&ERP (China & Europe Recycling Portal GmbH & Co. KG) and most of the time you can find us in the Speicher III in Osnabrueck. Yes, we really exist! The Chinese CCIC GmbH is known to almost everybody in the recycling industry and is often referred to as the TÜV (the German Technical Supervisory Association) for the export of secondary raw material to China. The level of popularity is also comparable to that of the TÜV, as bureaucracy is not only known and dreaded in Germany. So before one can export goods to China they have to be inspected by the CCIC. And to date the CCIC has never been looking for the dialog with their customers. Our event was the first time that a high ranked official of the CCIC spoke to a broad public and we were assigned with the organization and moderation of the event. We were especially aiming to avoid misunderstandings based on cultural differences. Despite some doubts and concerns that we had, the Monday afternoon started very promising. Virtually everybody registered on the guest list arrived early and already during the preliminary talk with the speakers, a lively discussion evolved. The vespertine Asia Buffet was well received and offered the opportunity to socialize or make “guanxis” as the Chinese would say. According to reports of some participants during the breakfast on

hellmann partner 03/2010 02/2010

Tuesday morning, the talks lasted almost until dawn. In the Morning, Senior Legal Secretary Dr. Andreas Jaron of the Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) opened the event at 9 a.m. During his speech, he emphasized the importance of recycling, especially with regard to the constantly decreasing natural resources. The aim of the BMU is to reshape the economy to make sure that the interest of companies in recycling will steadily grow. As the second speaker, Zhongliang Zhang, General Manager of the CCIC Bremen, entered the stage. He informed about Chinese amendments for the export to China as well as the license application and extension for the AQSIQ (Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the PR China). Due to his employment at the CCIC, Mr. Zhang did not have an easy stand with the audience as they had high expectations. But he managed the challenge outstandingly well. He clarified misunderstandings concerning the area of re-

31

From left: Dr. Thomas Probst, Si Chen and Junxin Zhang

sponsibility of the CCIC and their partner government agency AQSIQ and surprised the audience with giving out his e-mail address and encouraging the participants to forward questions, complaints and suggestions for improvement directly to him. He also agreed to a question and answer session following his speech. We were really impressed and happy about this level of openness. After this very interesting and open especially the attendant Hellmann employees were looking forward to hearing the speech of Christian Oswald, Hellmann Route Development Manager China, who – after a brief introduction of Hellmann – spoke about the challenges in the sea freight business, especially in the field of plastic material trade from Europe to Asia and how we as Hellmann master these requirements. As most of the recycling companies do not know much about the sea freight and are often irritated by high feed line and shipping costs, Christian Oswald explained the origin of these costs for the laymen in a plain and simple way and established understanding among our customers. In the course of the Morning, Daniela Hurst (as the representative of bvse) gave a lecture on the theory and praxis of raw material export to China and explained the various EU guidelines concerning waste material transport. As a government representative, Tillman Baehr of the government agency for urban development and environment Hamburg, who held his speech after Daniela Hurst, experienced the same skepticism from the audience as Zhongliang Zhang before him. Especially his introduction of the new term “non-waste” to the recycling business caused a lively discussion. He defined

“non-waste” as something which is no longer waste, but still not a product. This opens up many gray areas which do not make business life much easier for the recycling companies. The very excited discussion had to be interrupted by our Chinese host Gui Hao of Deutsche Welle radio due to the lunch break which was behind schedule already. Invigorated through the meal, the afternoon program featured two workshops and a panel discussion hosted by the German journalist and EU correspondent Hajo Friedrich. During the workshops on plastics and PPK (paper, cardboard, cardboard boxes) in the afternoon program, different experts informed about their experiences with the export to China. Again the relationship to the CCIC came up and the advantages and disadvantages of this relationship were critically discussed. During the concluding panel discussion on the topic “Opportunities and risks with the export of secondary raw materials to the Far East”, many participants had their say and explicated their impressions and expectations. As final thoughts we can say that this event definitely contributed to clearing the jungle of EU and CCIC provisions and to shedding light on the rather complicated circumstances in plastics material sea freight business. It was a great opportunity for an exchange of experiences and the cultural understanding which is especially important in the trade relations between China and Germany has been improved by all means. For us it was a successful event which we really enjoyed!

A new branch in Belo Horizonte H

ellmann is expanding its structure in Brazil by working to open the branch in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais that is one of 27 Federal States in Brazil with 586,589 km², equivalent to France in terms of size. The office will be managed by Hellmann Rio de Janeiro because of its location. Seafreight shipments in and out of Minas Gerais are shipped through the Port of Rio de Janeiro, because Minas Gerais has no access to the sea. We actually handle airfreight imports for VALE which is located in Minas Gerais (Mining business) and in the beginning we will have a small staff of one employee to run the airfreight import operation and another sales representative to cover the area. Our goal is having the branch opened with operations running on 1 January. We do believe that we can improve our results and market share in Brazil because of this potential branch due to the following main reasons:  Economy: third strongest state in terms of GDP, with many industries as mining, automotive, heavy equipments and textile

 Geography: huge state in terms of area without access to the sea. Rio de Janeiro port is applied on their exports  Competition: less players concentration in comparison with Rio de Janeiro where 75% of the GDP is related to Oil & Gas industry  Past: Hellmann Worldwide Logistics used to handle a lot of accounts that were lost due to a change of agent two years ago  Present: with our own operations & sales staff we will be able to succeed by getting new accounts. Opening our own branch for sure will help us to keep the development and even more increase our results. It is part of our strategy in terms of sales to improve our share in the Brazilian market. Global Tender Management and Sea Freight Team Meeting I

n the efforts to continue to work closer together as a global team, the US, Europe and Asia united in a Global Tender Management Meeting at the Hellmann US Headquarters in Miami, Florida. Alexander Krome – Tender Management USA Lead, Alleyne Reyes – Tender Management USA Specialist, Jens Pottschul – Vice President Ocean Freight Asia, and Stefan Hartmann – Tender Manager Europe were all in attendance for the global meeting that took place 1-3 September. Several topics were discussed such as the creation of a global share drive to access and save bid documents and a global tender management pipeline. Helios, one of the newest Hellmann applications launched earlier this year, will begin to be used in the near future as not only a CRM but to forecast RFQ dates globally far in advance. The Tender Management Global Team conversed on how to work closer with sales on the targeted accounts to identify customer needs and expectations prior to the bid launch. Also in the works is the development of a global standard rate template for origin and destination charges and airfreight rates for major trade lanes. Another key topic on their agenda was to spend more time on post mortem bid analysis. By devoting additional time to reviewing the bid in hindsight, it will provide valid information which will lead to identifying weaknesses and putting us one step ahead of our competition.

The Global Seafreight Team Meeting was held during the same time. The Global Seafreight Team met with the Global Tender Management Team to discuss their current approach on ocean freight bids and what can be improved in the future. The teams agreed on engaging in close communication and a consistent exchange of information. Top priority for the Global Seafreight Team is to receive proper feedback from Tender Management, outlining the reasons why a bid was lost and improvements that should be made moving forward.

Harbour Mouth widening Project pays off for Durban T

he Harbour Mouth Widening Project for Durban Port which was completed earlier this year and which now allows much larger vessels to enter the port, last month welcomed the largest container ship to enter a South African Port. MSC Maeva was the first new generation “Super Post Panamax“ vessel to enter the port after the completion of the ZAR billion plus harbour widening and deepening project. The vessel has a beam of 42.8 m and a container capacity of nearly 8,100 20-foot containers. The MSC Maeva‘s maiden visit to South Africa was a significant achievement for the Port of Durban. It represents the port‘s capacity to cater for these new generation larger vessels and to retain its position as one of Africa‘s leading ports. This surely marks the start of greater things to come! Pictured below is the fully laden MSC Maeva as it leaves Durban port. We would like to share some of the interesting factors of this mammoth project with you.

Delivery:  The construction programme lasted 147 weeks, with minimal upheavel to the port during that time  Four million man hours were worked without fatalities  More than 2,000 job opportunities were created Operations:  Ten million cubic metres of material was dredged from the sea, to widen and deepen the entrance channel  655,000 tons of rock was sourced from a commercial quarry for the construction work  More than 8,500 concrete blocks and Dolos weighing more than 260,000 tons were manufac-tured on site. Each was placed in the sea using GPS technology  The dredging operation revealed some fascinating obstacles like: railway wagons, a bulldozer and an old shipwreck Debbie Nortje Hellmann Durban

A special day R

ecently Hellmann Melbourne and the Richmond Football Club were able to combine their resources and make a special day for a life long Richmond supporter. The Richmond Football Club is one of the oldest and proudest football clubs in Australian’s AFL competition with a rich history of success. On Sunday 29 August, Hellmann Melbourne was privileged to be able to provide some match tickets to the last game of the season to Michael Danaher from ASSA Abloy Australia so he could take his mother who has recently been unwell. Peggy Danaher enjoyed a great day and with the help of Trent Cotchin of the Richmond Football club, we were able to arrange a team shirt signed by all

the players and personally addressed to Peggy. Peggy has been a loyal supporter and member of the Richmond Football Club for 70 years so this was a special moment for her and we were thrilled that Peggy had a great day. Unfortunately the Tigers were not able to get a win on the day, but they all played valiantly and next season already looks promising. We would like to thank the following people who all had a part to play in making this day special: Trent Cotchin, Dean Basar, Brent McPherson and Anita Todorovski and of course all the players from the Richmond Football Club. Customer Appreciation Picnic O

n 28 August, Hellmann hosted a Customer Appreciation Beach Picnic in San Diego, California. Over 150 Hellmann employees and customers, participated in a fun-filled extravaganza of outdoor events such as jet ski riding and water balloon tossing games! Some of Hellmann’s largest customers such as TDK, Waldo’s, and Sunrise Medical were in attendance for the outdoor festivities. As the sun set, the fun continued with dinner and dancing at a local hot spot in San Diego! Company events such as these allow Hellmann to strengthen its personal relationships with our customers and give us a chance to say “Thank You” for your business
