Earth Artifacts

Project synopsis “Earth Artifact” Promoting research, creative thinking, experimentation, semiotics, media channels and visual narrative. “For millions of years mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk, we learned to listen. Speech has allowed the communication of ideas enabling people to work together ... to build the impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking ... and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future with the technology at our disposal - the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking”. Stephen Hawking

Background The Voyager Golden Records are phonograph records, which were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft, which were launched in 1977. They contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them. The Voyager spacecraft’s are not heading towards any particular star, but Voyager 1 will be within 1.6 light years of the star AC+79 3888 in the Ophiuchus constellation in about 40,000 years.[1] As the probes are extremely small compared to the vastness of interstellar space, the probability of a space-faring civilization encountering them is very small, especially since the probes will eventually stop emitting any kind of electromagnetic radiation. If they are ever found by an alien species, it will most likely be far in the future as the nearest star on Voyager 1’s trajectory will only be reached in 40,000 years. Carl Sagan noted that “The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this ‘bottle’ into the cosmic ‘ocean’ says something very hopeful about life on this planet.”[2] Thus the record is best seen as a time capsule or a symbolic statement rather than a serious attempt to communicate with extraterrestrial life. wikipedia.org

Brief Over the next few weeks you are required to submit creative proposals through to finished design work/ animation for a new version of the ‘Golden Record’ entitled, ‘Earth Artifact’. This does not have to be a slavish reproduction of the original golden record, but could be a more contemporary version, which should be reflected in the content and the format/media channel of your choice. You should document all stages of the research and design process, which should demonstrate a critical understanding of the design challenge. You should be inventive and demonstrate your ingenuity in solving this creative challenge. It is important you generate several creative solutions, taking one justified idea forward to a final solution.

Starts off at the beginging of time walking though to the present showing milestones of the earths achievements and distructions.

A Simple message: Technology chasing man - to kill An Alien chasing a Human?

Idea’s

Evolution, from a fish crawling out of a pond, walking through time untill it becomes a human, sitting in an office.

Christi du Toit, a Illustrator, Letterer & Designer of sorts, based in Cape town, Africa. Christi’s work must be one of my favouirite arists i have selected so far. His work has the slightly rough, unfinished look to them, but they look so proffesional that they dont need anything else adding to them otherwise it would ruin t h e m .

WRelajaelcoco Studio is a Graphic Design studio in Madrid, Spain. With most artists I study, they all are based around simplistic illustrations with simple bland colour palates. I in particular like the yellow image, with the city on; I want to include this type of illustration in the background of my upcoming project.

Guillaume kurkdijan is an Illustrator/Animator from Nantes, France. I really like the style of his work, with the simple shapes and colours; they create a very powerful image, especially against the pastel coloured backgrounds. I really want to take up this style in my own work.

James Roper, an Artist based in Manchester, England. James’ work is very colourful and bold, unlike the other artists he uses bring powerful colours that create big scenes. The picture to the right is very appealing to my sytle of art i like.

Idea One The first scene is of the Probe/capsule flying through space. The camera then zooms into a small window on the Probe to see the Golden record. It then cuts to a scene showing the ‘Evolution of man story’. it will be an animation showing the basic transformation everyone knows of the fish walking out of the water, and transforming untill it becomes a walking human, then walking through scenes and evolution of the world till they become an old person and then walking into their grave. CWamera pans out to see hundereds of people doing the same thing.

Idea Two This Idea is a development from the first idea, instead of the fish evolving through different forms, i will have one form of charcter, walking along. And then the background will be moving back, and changing in time, showing they keypoints in history, such as the dinousours, ice age, etc, and the destruction etc untill it reaches modern day.

Idea Three For the third idea, it envolves a zoetrope, This would be a simple animation. Perhaps a Machine/robot chasing a human in circles. This would be to try and put a message across that technology is controlling us, and will soon be way more advanced than us. Another version could be showing the future perhaps, of an alien chasing a human.

Final Idea The idea i am going with is the first idea. But i am making a few changes to this. The opening scene of the capsual is no longer going to be a part of it. Neither is the Character walking through time. I feel removing the character and being able to focus on the Background/Timeline will be the better idea. So now on my timeline, which will start from the beginning of time, will show earths growth all the way to our current time (or slightly ahead of our time). I will have Certain things on the timeline moving in each eara/scene. i am going to try and have something repeat in the timeline, that links from the beginign and the end of the timeline. The timeline will be viewed as an anomatic.
