ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).
By Erica Smith
A Love Letter To NOLA “New Orleans food is as delicious as the less criminal forms of sin.” — Mark Twain “The minute you land in New Orleans, something wet and dark leaps on you and starts humping you like a swamp dog in heat, and the only way to get that aspect of New Orleans off you is to eat it off. That means beignets and crayfish bisque and jambalaya, it means shrimp remoulade, pecan pie, and red beans with rice, it means elegant pompano au papillote, funky file z’herbes, and raw oysters by the dozen, it means grillades for breakfast, a po’ boy with chowchow at bedtime, and tubs of gumbo in between.” — Tom Robbins Jitterbug Perfume “She had understood before she had ever dreamed of a city such as this, where every texture, every color, leapt out at you, where every fragrance was a drug, and the air itself was something alive and breathing.” — Ann Rice The Witching Hour New Orleans is a hard city to put your finger on. It is an intoxicating, exhilarating, and at times, an infuriating experience wrapped in a boozy blanket of jazz, voodoo, architecture and romance of days gone by. The streets come alive with this gentle hum fueled from 300 years of history combining so many cultures into a dizzy patchwork of Creole, French, Cajun, Spanish and African influences. The traffic is crazy, the city is impossibly dirty, you will step over lazy drunks and crust punks and probably step in heaven only knows what… but you slowly fall in love with this magical crescent city of excess and extreme. In New Orleans, even the neighborhood names can be complicated. We stayed in the Marginy on the corner of St. Claude and St. Roch Avenues. The location alone is the perfect
example of the sinner and saints attitudes that pervades the city. The streets proudly shout the names of martyred saints while the bars and clubs are bursting with every possible sin and vice. This unique contrast is an ever present reminder of New Orleans’ dichotomy – a city of amazing possibility shrouded in the midst of crime, corruption and economic need. Driving through the Marginy, just a few streets from Frenchman Street and the French Quarter, shows the insurmountable gap that is strangely embraced by the people of New Orleans. One side of the street is marred with the reminder of poverty and loss while just a few steps away gentrification has begun wiping the stain away at a clipped pace No love letter to NOLA would be complete without a nod to the fabulous cuisine and hospitality the city kindly offers. Venture past the tacky tourist trappings of Bourbon and set your soul and soles on the raucous party of Frenchman Street. Eat a Dat Dog, watch the street vendors, push your way through the crowd to watch the golden glint of trombone slide and then eat another Dat Dog while taking in the pure high of an atmosphere that is charged with everything New Orleans stands for. This is a city that won’t disappoint, it gives you a mojo, a personal gris gris, a groove you didn’t even know you had. Ah NOLA, until we meet again. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com

Veterinarian of the Month “Doc” Mary McDaniel, Lake Alfred Animal Hospital, recently served as the chief veterinarian for the 2011 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. The Championship which took place in Orlando, FL is scheduled to be broadcast 2/14/2012 on ABC. Before becoming a 1998 University of Florida graduate, McDaniel worked as a veterinary pharmaceutical representative. Her love for dogs traces back to when she was young and showed them. She’s always been fascinated with breeding dogs and is the only veterinarian in Florida endorsed by the ICSB, an international organization known for its very stringent breeding procedures. But McDaniel doesn’t want to just be known as a “breeding” vet, “I serve breeders, locals, and rescues equally. I love my job.” Lake Alfred Animal Hospital 105 E. Alfred Street, Lake Alfred, FL 33850

GET READY TO EXPERIENCE THE IMPOSSIBLE
Y
ou have watched Robert Irvine on the Food Network “Restaurant: Impossible” series and a host of other television specials but who is the man behind those famous biceps? Does he really transform a failing restaurant in just two days on a $10,000 budget? Today & Tonight Magazine had the opportunity this month to sit down with Robert and discuss his upcoming live performance at The Lakeland Center on April 20th. What we discovered is Robert is the same man you see on television… commanding, to the point and incredibly energetic! Whether he is tackling an impossible food challenge or empowering fans to live a healthier lifestyle, Robert is the down-to-earth chef legions of television viewers have come to love. Irvine grew up with working class roots and joined the British Royal Navy where he received his first culinary training aboard Her Majesty’s Royal Yacht Britannia. His culinary career continued with positions in hotels, casinos and aboard cruise ships ultimately earning the privilege of being the executive chef for the MS Crystal Harmony and Donald Trump’s Taj Mahal resort. He has also served as head chef for the 2006 Academy Awards and served as a consultant for the US Navy. His big television break came with a TV show few fans have ever heard of titled “Fit for a King.” This show was the initial pitch to Food Network and after a few changes became known as “Dinner: Impossible.” More than 100 episodes of “Dinner: Impossible” aired including locations ranging from a deserted island to a hotel made of ice and beyond. He is currently the host and star of “Restaurant: Impossible” which gives the cast and crew 36 hours and $10,000 to save a restaurant from impending failure. With over 80 episodes and seven exciting seasons, Irvine is proud to share the success rate is 78% for restaurants participating in the challenge. Like his television shows, Irvine has combined his signature enthusiasm with his proven culinary chops to create a high energy, multimedia and multi-sensory theatrical experience -- ROBERT IRVINE LIVE. More than just a cooking demo, the live performance is an interactive show that provides multiple opportunities for audience participation and offers fans a special behind-the-scenes view of his successful television series. Multiple cameras will provide a close-up view of the master at his craft along with innovative music and
video content specifically produced for this show. In each live segment, Robert will face a new and unique culinary challenge inspired by the audience.
10 QUESTIONS WITH FOOD NETWORK’S ROBERT IRVINE T&T MAG: What has been your most memorable moment with Restaurant Impossible? ROBERT: I’ve helped more than 140 restaurants on Restaurant Impossible and have to say they all have been memorable. The ones I’ve enjoyed the most are those that the families truly want to change, make the commitment and six months later are successful. T&T MAG: What behind the scenes secrets can you share about the new season? What happens during production that would surprise fans? ROBERT: I can’t divulge the new season secrets but can share that we’ve added some exciting twists to a few of the episodes. Fans are always surprised to hear that I know nothing about the restaurant before showing up on set. What you see unfold on TV is really what happens. T&T MAG: What is your number one tip for start- up business owners? ROBERT: As a business owner myself, there are many tips and lessons learned I could share with start-ups. A common struggle for start-ups is the hiring and managing of people. As the business owner you need to understand what your strengths and weaknesses are, understand how that impacts the business and then hire the right people to fill those gaps. T&T MAG: Have you ever not completed a challenge...2 days is so challenging? What happens when there are unexpected problems? ROBERT: No. There have been a few that have come down to the final minutes but we have always finished. Because I don’t know what I’m getting in to, every problem is unexpected. I have a good team in place. We have a goal and we adapt to those unexpected challenges.

T&T MAG: We hear you have a few new restaurants opening up...but if you could open a new restaurant concept what would it be? ROBERT: I have three restaurant concepts in the planning phase and although they are different they each focus on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Each concept will feature dishes unique to that region and the atmosphere will range from casual dining to fast-casual. T&T MAG: Of the newest food trends, what is the most exciting? ROBERT: I’m a big fan of fresh, farm-to-table cooking. A meal cooked with fresh ingredients is healthier and tastes better. T&T MAG: What is a typical day in the life of Robert Irvine? ROBERT: There is no such thing as a typical day. I’m on the road 340 days of the year. Every day is different. T&T MAG: What is the number one problem in the restaurants you rescue? Is there a reoccurring theme? ROBERT: Each restaurant is different but some of the recurring problems include inventory and financial management and people management. T&T MAG: What will fans experience during your live show at The Lakeland Center? ROBERT: The LIVE show is a multi-sensory experience. Each show is different and directed by the fans. There is a ton of fan engagement, cooking challenges and fun. It’s unlike any other chef hosted show out there. T&T MAG: Is there any ingredient you think is impossible to cook with? ROBERT: No, and I prove that during my LIVE show. —————————————————————————

he best part of Kathy Griffin’s comedy is you never know what she will say next! Kathy is a towering figure on television, on tour and in publishing and breaks through the entertainment clutter with her universally recognized brand of pull-no-punches comedy. She made history with her 6th consecutive Grammy nomination and first win for Best Comedy Album (“Kathy Griffin: Calm Down Gurrl”), joining Whoopi Goldberg and Lily Tomlin as the only other female comedians to ever win Grammy awards for Best Comedy Album. And if that is not enough, you can see Kathy LIVE at The Lakeland Center for one night only on April 23rd at 8pm. In 2013, Kathy was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for writing and starring in an unprecedented 20 televised stand-up specials - more than any comedian in history. Buoyed by her dedicated and engaged fans, Kathy’s live stand-up performances are legendary and in a class of their own with sold-out shows everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. Her sure-fire hosting success led to her own LIVE late night talk show, Kathy. Her boisterous and revealing memoir, A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin, debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times Bestseller List. She also won two Primetime Emmy Awards for her hit reality series, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, which aired for six years on Bravo. The show also won the GLAAD Media Award for Best Reality Program and was nominated six consecutive times by the Producers Guild of America. Kathy was a cast member on NBC’s Suddenly Susan and guest starred on Seinfeld and Law & Order: SVU. She lent her unique voice to animated characters in Shrek Forever After and the award-winning television shows The Simpsons, American Dad, and Dilbert.
Her other awards and honors include The Human Rights Campaign’s Ally for Equality, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America’s Leadership in Entertainment honor, GLAAD’s Vanguard award, The Trevor Life Award from the Trevor Project, and a Gracie Award for Outstanding Female Lead. As one of the busiest professionals in the business, Kathy took a few minutes out her busy schedule to talk to Today & Tonight Magazine about her upcoming April 23rd live show, comedy inspirations, real life and what exactly happened on New Year’s Eve with Anderson Cooper. 12

ON TO THE QUESTIONS T&T MAG: What does it take to break into comedy as a female artist? What has been the secret to your career success? KATHY: Well, if you are a woman, you better want it. You better be prepared to work harder and jump higher than those boys. That is the secret to my success. I don’t know that my 94-year old alcoholic mother, Maggie, would consider me to be a success as she just told me yesterday she would prefer it if I got a “real job.” She suggested that I train to be a dental hygienist. T&T MAG: What is your daily inspiration? How do you keep material relevant? KATHY: Well, aren’t I the lucky one? On a daily basis, I have celebrities, politicians, pop culture figures of all kind and my own family to continue to “inspire me.” I love that you chose the word “inspire.” I do not think Oprah Winfrey would consider my material about her “inspirational,” but when I hear her shout any celebrity’s name in her signature way, I feel quite inspired. My material will always continue to be relevant as long as these crazy celebrities continue to find new ways to perpetuate their B.S. in a way I can comedically shine a light on. And yes, I’m talking to you Kylie Jenner with your endless Instagram posts.
T&T MAG: In your opinion, who is the worst dressed person in Hollywood and the best dressed person? Why? KATHY: The worst-dressed person in Hollywood would be whatever executive turned me down recently for whatever GENIUS idea I was pitching them. Okay, a non-famous Hollywood executive is not interesting to the general public, but dammit, I’ll put ‘em on my mental worst dressed list anyway. The best-dressed person in Hollywood is of course, Bruce Jenner. T&T MAG: Is there anyone you won’t talk about in your act… is there a line you won’t cross… or a person that is off limits? KATHY: Believe it or not, I actually do have a line I won’t cross and there are people that are off limits. Typically the way it works is, if a celebrity or someone I truly feel has earned the right to be “off limits,” I will say to that person, “let me know whether or not we are in a cone of silence.” They know that if they do not make me aware of this, there is a good chance that they WILL end up in my act. Did I say Anderson Cooper? Oops. T&T MAG: What has been the most embarrassing moment in your career? KATHY: Well, the number of embarrassing moments would be infinity. Luckily I have made a career out of the most embarrassing moments in my act. Many of them include times when I
have taken the opportunity to try and win over a celebrity or make a celebrity laugh after I have poked fun at them in my act. I would say that process has about a 95% failure rate, but I still keep trying. I’m looking at you Taylor Swift. T&T MAG: What happens behind the scenes before you take to the stage…do you have any strange requests like no green M&M’s? KATHY: Like most comedians, I have a whole process. I have a Cobb Salad 3 hours before show time. I typically don’t write down my show topics on my old-fashioned notebook until about 20 minutes before I hit the stage, as I want to be as up to the minute as possible. But in all honesty, the darkest part of the preshow process is that I have to check my phone up until the very second I take the stage to make sure that no one I am going to make fun of in my act has died in the last hour. Yes, it’s happened. T&T BONUS QUESTION: We watch you on New Year’s Eve with Anderson Cooper…did Anderson get mad when you dyed his hair blue this year? Are you really pushing his buttons or is he just a good sport? KATHY: He tweeted a photo of himself with the hair dye in the next day. Unfortunately, even with the hair dye he still looked gorgeous and perfect. He was not mad, but yes, I really am pushing his buttons. Someone has to. ———————————————————

FROM GAZOONI TO GREATNESS A Personal Interview with Legendary Trapeze Artist and World Record Holder, Tony Steele By Paula Blackwelder Many in the Circus industry know Tony Steele. They either worked with him, taught with him - or they were taught by him. He is a Circus Legend and an Aerial Wonder. Now, at the age of 78, there is a book available that reveals the choices Steele took to get there and the raw consequences of some of the moves that he made in his life. The book begins with his family life falling, further than “apart”, and when he became 15 years of age, he determines that going for his dream, is his best option. With his lunch wrapped up in a road map, the kid ventures 1,800 miles from home to join the Circus as a trapeze artist, only to have his dream postponed by a paint brush. The kid makes friends with a menagerie of odd-ball characters, who help him practice what he loves the most; the trapeze. When finally given the opportunity to prove himself in a show, the kid is told he will never be a flyer. But only one decade later, and this kid finds himself listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first to perform specific trapeze tricks, and receives an apology from those flyers who doubted him. Tony Steele becomes internationally famous, and in demand for live-shows, television productions and major motion pictures. He marries the love of his life, Lily, and they tour with shows in multiple countries, but this dazzling life gets interrupted by the United States draft. Steele thinks this might be the end, but his thoughts turn out to be incorrect. He gets notoriety for his trapeze accomplishments, while serving his country in the Army, along with famous singer, Elvis Presley, who is serving simultaneously. He is discharged early by a German-Circus connection, and is involved in a plane crash the very next day. Since Steele hasn’t let anything stop him before, he and his flying act continued on and received more publicity at the 1962 World’s Fair, than Liberace. Steele gets a break from the road and performs trapeze at Circus Circus in both Vegas and Reno, where he enjoys the staggering camaraderie provided by the mafia. He performs the “sponge plunge” in two James Bond movies, “Diamonds Are Forever” and “Gold Finger,” then on to Europe to double a female trapeze artist in the German television production, Salto Mortal.

APRIL 2015
Life couldn’t be more spectacular, but when his wife is diagnosed with cancer, Steele starts spiraling downward, and upon his wife’s death, becomes an alcoholic, who lost everything he had ever worked for, and even bathed in rainwater, caught in a garbage can. After receiving much needed help from Circus friends, a half-way house and Alcoholics Anonymous, he realized his life wasn’t over after all, and began his “guest instructor” career at Circus Schools, Camps and Club Meds throughout the United States and Canada. Now at the age of 78, Steele continues to perform in live shows, judge Circus competitions and mentor those who now had the dream that once belonged to him. This is a self-help, motivational, inspirational book for the Outrageous Goal Grasper, and includes questions at the end of every chapter, that engage and intrigue the reader. The book is written by former Circus Aerialist, Paula Blackwelder. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Paula Blackwelder entered the world of live entertainment at the age of 16. With her passion for the flying trapeze, she was driven to soar by the encouragement of her first trapeze coach, John Zimmerman. She performed aerial artistry in 5 amusement parks, 2 casinos and several traveling shows for Shriners Hospitals. Her aerial work included working with troupes such as the Flying Farfans, to performing high-acts with famous sky-walker, the late Jay Cochran. After touring the United States and performing for Circo Atayde in Mexico City, she left life on the road for entrepreneurship and family. For 10 years, she has written as a correspondent for Central Florida newspapers and wrote 5 columns weekly for 3 newspapers, formerly owned by the New York Times. Since Blackwelder was first coached by Zimmerman 29 years ago, the couple was wed by Tony Steele, on the trapeze on Dec. 27, 2014. Tony Steele is a Notary Public in the state of Florida. Autographed copies of “From Gazoonie to Greatness” are available on line at www.FromGazoonieToGreatness. com. These books are also available at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. The paperback book has 22 chapters and 53 photographs. Other characters mentioned in the book are Slick Valentine, Billy Woods, Betty Woods Rielly, LaNorma Fox and Tomi Liebel, among others. Tony and Paula are available for speaking engagements and can be contacted at PaulaBlackwelder@gmail.com

SARA MICHAELS’
PORCH Ones to watch in 2015…I should have written this article in January…but better late than never…haha! There seems to be a shift in “super stars” every ten years or so…as technology grows, it almost feels like an artist’s “shelf life” becomes shorter...maybe because our attention span is getting shorter. Who knows? It also seems as if the ages of the artists are getting younger and younger, or perhaps I am getting older. Either way, I have selected five artists that I feel have a future in country music.
Mo Pitney, Canaan Smith, Michael Ray Mickey Guyton, Kelsea Ballerini
MICKEY GUYTON: Arlington, Texas born Mickey Guyton’s tone reminds me of a cross between a Faith Hill with Carrie Underwood; however, her songs are more traditional country sounding…which is a hook, line and sinker for me. Her debut single (that she co-wrote) is called “Better Than You Left Me”… and it’s a breath of fresh air to hear a strong female voice on country radio. MO PITNEY: Mo’s voice is probably THE BEST male country voice that I have heard in a very long time. Mo was recently my Porch Pick and I just keep falling in love with his sound over and over again. Completely traditional…I’m sold. KELSEA BALLERINI: Kelsea is the youngest of the bunch. She’s a 19 year old Nashville native who wrote her first song at 13. Her first single is called “Love Me Like You Mean It,” which is steadily climbing the charts. Again, in a genre that has been dominated by men for SEVERAL years, it’s nice to hear a woman planting her feet in the playlist of country music. CANAAN SMITH: Not only is he one of the nicest guys I have met in country music, he is an incredible singer/songwriter with local ties to Lake County’s Jeff Hurst and Michael Ray. In my 15+ years in radio, NEVER once has a signed artist just “stopped by” to say “hey” at 16

WPCV if they were simply “in town.” Canaan did. He brought his wife and her parents with him (they are local folks)…and was the most gracious young man that I have met in a very long time. His first single “Love You Like That” is sitting in the Top 40 and he is about to embark on a tour with Dierks Bentley. My best goes out to Canaan and his future success. MICHAEL RAY: Last but not least, here’s a no brainer for you… Michael Ray. I first heard Michael at Boots N’ Buckles in North Lakeland several years ago, and it was then that my passion for music came back, he gave me someone to believe in. I fought tooth and nail to get him booked in as many places as I could, to get him played for as many people who could hear him, and try to have you believe in him like I did. Well, it worked. Now signed to Warner Brothers Nashville, last month…he was the most added debut singer in Warner Brothers history. Meaning, his debut song “Kiss You in the Morning” (which WPCV was first to play over a year ago), was added the most to country radio stations across America. Kudos to Michael, and to 97 Country for recognizing talent and believing in me, and in Michael. This kid is about to blow up!

Stinky Armpits, Hair Care and Stubble No kidding….I counted over 225 different kinds of deodorant in a drug store the other day. An armpit by any other name will smell the same, won’t it? The labels had names like, Artic Edge, Clean Concept, Tropical Breeze and Cool Rush. I was dumbfounded you can choose latitudinal and longitudinal fragrances according to your self-concept. Some were waterproof. I didn’t know you could stink underwater. Who would want waterproof deodorant? Does this make a shower meaningless? They have mostly the same ingredients, but are marked men’s, women’s, regular strength, and clinical strength…Clinical strength? Can stink be clinical? One claimed to have “stress response”, another, “time release” and others “motion sense”. I find it incredulous that sticky white stuff is capable of such sophisticated intelligence. The marketers just hope we’re that stupid. I ventured to the shampoo aisle, and there were hundreds of exotic frizz relief, curl improving, straightening and repairing formulas. Then there’s the “professional” section, which translates as “extremely expensive”. Let’s not forget to mention the exotic oils like Kuku oil. It is cuckoo for shampoo. If we can smell it, they will sell it. Lastly, I decided to brave the razor blade section. It was another gauntlet of choices with names like Mach 3 and Venus. They are razors. Just because one is blue and the other pink, doesn’t mean that it has a gender. It’s just a razor! ENTERTAINING POLK COUNTY FOR 10 YEARS!
I simply wanted a razor to shave the hair I don’t want after spending ions looking for products to take care of the hair I do want. I was overwhelmed with choices. I noticed the razors were locked up. I assume it’s to prevent theft, or maybe, just maybe, it’s to protect us from the unstable person who might lose their mind finding the right razor.
It also may be to hold the razors hostage as they have a higher value than one could imagine. For the price of three razors that aren’t disposable you could probably afford permanent laser hair removal. Yes, there are disposable razors. Some are not inexpensive, either. The ones that are cheap will cut you like an angry kitten that was chased into the corner of the barn by a pit bull and trying to scratch her way out. America is a land of choices. I love that. However, should just trying to stop stinking cause us to have to stop and do so much thinking? QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com APRIL 2015

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • You probably won’t be surprised to learn that when author (and noted wit) Oscar Wilde arrived in the United States in 1882, he told the customs officers, “I have nothing to declare except my genius.” • A pregnant goldfish is called a twit. • If you’re planning a summer vacation in Maine this year, you might want to keep in mind that in that state, it’s against the law to tickle a woman under the chin with a feather duster. • Despite the fact that 95 percent of the world uses the metric system of measurement, we in the United States still stubbornly cling to the archaic units of measurement derived from the old British Imperial system. This hodgepodge ranges from the mile (originally the distance a Roman soldier could march in 1,000 double steps) to the foot (originally the length of Emperor Charlemagne’s foot, later “standardized” to the length of 35 barleycorns laid end to end) to a yard (the distance between King Henry I’s nose to his extended fingertips) to an inch (the length from the tip to the first joint of a man’s thumb).

BRIAN’S BRAIN
By Brian Bruchey
Wally World I just left Walmart. As is the case with everyone, I literally only went to Walmart to purchase two things (toilet paper and soap), but left there with so much more. I ended up spending seventy-one dollars on this trip, leaving with my toilet paper and soap, as well as protein shakes & bars, insect spray, and weed killer. On this particular trip to Wally World, I arrived after dropping my kid off at school. Dropping off… such an odd phrase. Makes it sound like I tossed him out of the car while speeding by, when in fact, it was more like I pushed him out the door. So my visit to Walmart was around 8am, and I do believe that might be the magical time to visit. Although, it didn’t seem like it was going to be that way. I pulled into the parking lot, and there were actually some good parking spaces, but my happiness was short-lived. The space I was pulling into had a shopping cart in it. No doubt, it was left there by someone who should burn in hell for all eternity. As I walked inside, my mood got better. There were no people causing traffic congestion near the front door. It annoys me when I witness a driver wave a pedestrian to cross, then the pedestrian does one (or all of the following): - walk across in an angle, thereby extending the time it takes to cross. - stop midway to speak to someone else. -make the crossing, but then continues to walk in the center of the lot aisles, forcing cars to creep slowly behind them. On this particular visit, the most amazing thing happened---the first shopping cart I grabbed was one that had four good wheels, and didn’t squeak too much. You might be thinking, “Why did you get a cart if you only went for two items?” Because, duh! This is Walmart, and there is no way to get only what you
need. I thought we covered this in the opening paragraph. I bet you’re one of those folks who leaves their shopping carts in a parking space. At 8am, it seemed that all of the employees were cheerful. Not that Walmart employees aren’t normally
cheerful, but I think that by the time noon rolls around, they’ve put up with so many rude, crude, and stupid people, they’re about to snap. At 8am, the store is clean and in order. No spills on the floor, and all items are in their proper place. This means, there are no frozen pizza rolls sitting on top of candy bars in the check-out lanes. While making my way through the aisles, I occasionally encountered other shoppers. Happy shoppers. Polite shoppers. One lady even said “Excuse me” to me. Seriously! In Walmart! As I was heading to the checkout lanes, one of the cashiers smiled, and waved me over. She was in the “20 Items or Fewer” lanes, and she joked that she saw me looking at my cart, making sure I had fewer than twenty items. We shared a moment…a bond…both of us silently realizing that I would be her last customer today that would abide by the rule. As I placed the items in my car, and placed the cart into the cart corral, I heard loud thumping music, and people acting obnoxious in the parking lot. It was 8:58am. Happy hour at Walmart was over. By Mary Joye JB Lynn recently taught a workshop at the Florida Creativity Weekend in Sarasota presented by Florida Creativity Alliance, in Partnership with the USF SarasotaManatee and Florida Studio Theatre. Her class, titled, “Muzzle Your Inner Critic So That You Can Hear Your Muse” was fun and interactive. JB is a dedicated full time author of many books, including two series. One is “Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman” and the other “Matchmaker Mysteries”. They all have a cast of quirky characters. When asked about the “slightly” neurotic series, she giggled, “My publisher and I had discussions about the title length. Taking out the word slightly would help, but it lends sympathy to the main character, Maggie Lee.” She got the idea for Maggie by watching the news about a woman trying to hire an undercover policeman as a hitman and wondered if there was a “hitwoman” anywhere. According to my spellchecker, there isn’t, but JB Lynn has written ten novels about one. JB elaborates, “Maggie doesn’t want to kill anybody. She’s a hitwoman with a heart of gold. She only does bad things to bad people for a good purpose.” JB’s darkly humorous look into the human desire for justice is perhaps what keeps her loyal readers asking for more. JB relates, “I get feedback from readers that say my characters keep growing.” When asked how she keeps them all straight after ten books, she smiles, “I try to touch on everybody in every book, but some get more attention.” Her current work is titled “The Hitwoman’s Downward Dog.” JB Lynn is an animal lover in real life. This translates into her character of Maggie’s life through talking companions of a Doberman named Doomsday, an anole lizard named Godzilla, who prefers to be called God and a cat. JB giggles about Godzilla, “I spent hours in a pet store researching what kind of animal Maggie could have that was small enough to fit in her purse or be able to hang off her bra strap. Maggie hears Godzilla with a proper, snooty English accent, like the actor Alan Rickman. But when other people hear him they think her chest is squeaking. Godzilla is designed to be her conscience.” JB’s innovative process is technical but not restrictive. “I have an outline, but it’s like a roadmap,” she educates. 32

CONVERSATIONS WITH HER CHARACTERS Author: JB Lynn “You know where you want to end up and have the general idea of the route, but if you see the giant ball of string, stop and look at it!” When you look at JB Lynn’s body of work, you’ll also see she has a blog on a tongue in cheek website Www.killerchicks. org. This happened before the series was written. She also was a contributor to the “Must Love Pets: A
Romance Box Set” series. When asked to explain to “normal” folks about writing, she offered, “I think writers and artists see a bigger picture than normal people. What one person may see as an 8 x 10 view is seen by a writer as a mural! You might see everything clearly in your 8 x10 visually, but I’m looking at the mural and see something totally different.” She doesn’t have a box of ideas like
many writers do. She cites, “I agree with Stephen King. The good stuff sticks in your mind.” Mundanely showering she said she heard the phrase “Doomsday is coming”. It stuck in her head for months. While writing an early “Hitwoman” book, JB had Godzilla frantically repeating the phrase to Maggie. In that context JB explained, “Doomsday turns out to be the name of the Doberman. She’s dopey, loyal and grammatically challenged. I’ve had people write me fan mail in her incorrect language.” What a compliment to her characters who she says she carries on “conversations” with all the time. When asked about the idea of talking pets, JB returns, “How do you make a woman who is going to kill for money, sympathetic? You need to know what’s going on in her head. She can talk it out with a lizard. I rarely talk about or to the character I’m working on at the time. I get into a story line and see how the character reacts.” Then we discussed the business of writing. She shifted gears and said, “I’ve had two agents. For each book sent out, it came with about one hundred rejections. It’s almost always fear than makes you procrastinate or give up. That being said, I have to psych myself up every day to write. It’s that voice in your head that has a thousand reasons not to write.” The conversation comes full circle back to lessons from her class. She shares, “Don’t write the book you think you can sell; write the one you want to read…It’s also commitment. Sometimes you need accountability. No one watches you do your work. Don’t get hijacked.” Her new motto is, “Practice makes awesome.” She explains, “Writing is like the people in the Olympics who practice their whole lives. They may not be perfect but they are awesome!” If you call JB awesome, she is more humble and calls her success a “fluke”. I call it talent and tenacity. She concludes, “It’s interesting to read the sneak-peek perceptions of what my Street Team has to say. They are most trusted readers. Reviews help. I have a Facebook page just for them.” She cannot count the number of books she has published now nor the ones in the works. Her business card reads, “Author, Coffee Addict, Possibilitarian”. You must check out her Website out at www.jblynn.com or purchase through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Itunes or Kobo.

SOMEWHERE SPORTS BAR & CAFE

APRIL 2015
By Loren Spangler Photos By Chris Douglas A sports bar is an establishment that offers televised games with strategically placed large screen TVs suitable for viewing. People visit a sports bar for social contact and sports enjoyment. A comfortable sports bar has a décor of team logos, digital juke box, tribute to popular athletes; bar games (including darts), and at least one pool table. In addition to all of that, good eats and a variety of cold beers is a must. “Our food is what brings people here,” says Jeff Heaton, manager (with his wife Ann Heaton). “We are famous for serving awesome chicken wings, delicious burgers, and pizza,” he says and adds their friendly-attentive server/bartenders are: Nancy, Bobbie, Amanda, Dora, Val, and Judy. In the kitchen making great things happen culinary wise are chefs Butch, Joe, Carson, and Mike. “Joe is our pizza chef and has been making pizza at the restaurant for four-years,” says Jeff. “He always uses true pizza dough (his own recipe) and fresh cut veggies; nothing is processed. People know the difference. I can see it on their faces. They mention to me that our pizza is the best they have ever had.” Chef Butch has been in the restaurant business since the 1980s and for the last ten-years has displayed his cooking talents at Somewhere Sports Bar & Cafe. When preparing his foods, he only uses fresh meat and jumbo size wings bought daily. Items featured on the menu are delicious and affordable. WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM • FIND US ON FACEBOOK
Notice on the Daily Lunch Menu that each meal is only $5.99. “Pretty much everything in the kitchen is made hands on,” says Butch. “We make all the popular dishes, including our own potato chips and skins, and we do it every day.” He says even though their food is made to please, he is always agreeable to making changes and catering to the personal wishes of customers. “If a guest wants a selection cooked a certain way with special additions, or asks that their chicken wings are extra crispy, no problem.” Interestingly, several foods on the menu are named after customers. For instance: the T Rex Fries are named after a customer “Our kitchen staff is the absolute best. Very named Rex and is a variation made with bacon, seldom do we ever take a plate back to the kitchen.” cheese, and ranch dressing. Jeff says it doesn’t happen because everything is Jeff says he wants to do everything he can to draw cooked right first time. “At Somewhere Sports Bar & people in and make them happy. “We are always Cafe we have a motto: never reduce food size portions trying new things; like right now, we’re making a or lessen the quality.” really great spicy salad with grilled chicken,” he says. Daily Lunch Menu (all $5.99) including: Subs, “Another menu item that has become immensely popular is our Runners, which are large boneless wings with a choice of sauce.” Somewhere seats one-hundred people, including inside and outside seating. The space is conveniently located near Gold’s Gym (opposite Legoland) with plenty of parking. Now under new management, there are things being planned for the future or already in the works. For instance: live music entertainment, revised menu, karaoke night, bike night, and a Cinco de Mayo celebration (May 5th). Currently, bartender/ server Val hosts Trivia on Thursday. A sports bar is noted for its cold beer and Somewhere aims to please. In addition to Domestic and Import Draft Beer (Dos Equis, Guinness, Sierra Nevada, and Miller-Bud-Coors-Ultra Lite, Yuengling, Michelob Amber), there is also a variety of house wines and mixed drinks. Jeff says he likes people, makes them feel welcome, and treats his customers like they were old friends. “We have a lot of regulars that tell me how friendly the bar is and always mention the great food.” Jeff patterns Somewhere Sports Bar & Cafe after the family friendly concept of the TV show Cheers. TID BITS TRACEY’S
By Tracey Greene
Empire Strikes a Chord Television viewers have long been waiting for the return of real TV shows versus the reality style shows. When Scandal launched in 2012, “Olivia Pope” it’s starring character played by Kerry Washington was an immediate media darling and the show has roared in ratings ever since. Orange is the New Black debuted in 2013. People were astounded by the success of this new series portraying a women’s prison which was viewed through Netflix. HBO and Show Time have both known huge successes with series on cable networks but Netflix? Now we HAVE seen it all.... Forward to 2015 and a new star has shot to the top leader board - Empire, the newest night time soap opera people can really sink their teeth into. But be careful, this show bites back! Empire creators are not afraid to push the envelope and we LOVE them for it! Empire closed out season one to record breaking ratings for its finale. Admittedly, as each week went by in the regular season, I kept telling myself that I needed to watch this new show. It aires after American Idol, which I record to watch at a later date, so I would constantly see the show’s teasers. The day after the Empire season finale the media went crazy talking about it on the radio and on TV but not relieving any spoilers. That’s it! I thought to myself. I must watch Empire before someone released a spoiler that I wasn’t ready to hear. The results: I power 36

watched the 12 episode season in three nights. After the seasons finale, I wasn’t ready for it to end. Damn these writers! I am now sucked into the Empire vortex and feel a little more “street cred” has been bestowed upon me. With each show, you find yourself trying to figure out which real-life star from the entertainment industry are being portrayed: Jay Z, Sean Combs, Suge Knight, Rihanna? Maybe even Lee Daniels himself? Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, co-creators, have a smash hit on their hands. The first season was so powerful and had such great character development that you have to wonder which direction the show will take in the next season and does it have the staying power? I think yes. Lee Daniels has pulled together a monster cast with a lot of big celebrities. Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson back together as leads characters Lucious Lyon and ex-wife Cookie Lyon. The two were on the big screen together in Hustle & Flow. Empire is our generation’s Dynasty; Cookie and Boo-Boo Kitty. No love lost between these show characters; lots of dirty looks, back stabbing and cat fights. Can’t wait to get my next fix from Empire. Who’s gonna get thrown under the bus next? #TeamCookie QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS tracey@todayandtonight.com

Dunedin Brewery
DAY TRIP TO HISTORICAL DUNEDIN, FLORIDA Quaint Shops, Bayfront Dining, Gulf Fishing, Island Tours, And The Oldest Craft Brewery In Florida.
By Loren Spangler Dunedin, Florida is named after Din Eideann, a Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Bordering the town of Clearwater to the north, Dunedin boasts tensquare miles of land and seventeen square miles of water. As one of the few waterfront communities where buildings do not obscure the view of the Intra-coastal and the Gulf of Mexico beyond, its world famous Honeymoon Island and Caladesi State Park are rated among the best beaches in the world. The downtown business district is notable for its absence of large signage, franchise restaurants, and chain retail stores. Main Street delivers charm, boutiques, antique shops, and sidewalk café’s, such as the Living Room, and Adams Coffee Shop. The Museum, with its two-hundred volumes of history and close to five-thousand artifacts will take you back to another time. Making Dunedin unique among Florida cities is the tree lined thirtynine mile bicycle pedestrian trail (formerly the Orange Belt Railroad built in 1888). Since 1977, Dunedin has been the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays and Class-A Dunedin Blue Jays of the Florida State League. Their play stadium (Auto Exchange) is situated next to Dunedin Public Library 40

(founded in 1885) two blocks east of scenic Edgewater Drive. The city has a golf course and a large athletic base which includes baseball, hockey, and games of Gaelic origin. Scottish families settled the area in the late 1800s giving Dunedin the sole distinction of being the oldest town south of Cedar Key, Florida. With deep water dockage built to accommodate larger sailing vessels, Dunedin became a chief seaport and at one time had the largest fleet of sailing vessels in the state. The marina hosts 194 boat slips. For a taste of culture, drop by the Dunedin Fine Art Center, one of the most renowned centers for art in the southeastern United States. At 40,000 sq. ft., it houses five galleries, fifteen studios, gift shop and café, and the DLM Children’s Art Museum. In 2007, the Dunedin Community Center opened to the public at a cost of ten million dollars. Dunedin Brewery on Douglas Avenue (established in 1995) is the oldest microbrewery in Florida. The popular beer company is family owned and operated by founders Michael M. and Kandi Bryant. The Manager is Traci Bryant. The beers at the brewery are handcrafted in small batches, fifteen barrels at a time by brewers Trace Caley & Richard Crance. Management says that much of their
production supplies the Pub’s on-premise taps, while the rest of the kegs are shipped out to bars and restaurants through Taylor Distribution & Craft Beer Distributors, Inc. Brews: Gold Ale, Apricot Peach Ale, WheatRed-Pale-Brown Ale, American Classic IPA, Dram Alter, Backlight Lager, and Midnight Sextant. “During Beer Week, we sold out our supply of Imperial Porters in bottles,” says bartender Kurt. Food: Appetizers, Salads, Burgers and Wraps. Entertainment in April starts at 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The bands will perform from April 2nd to the 25th. For waterfront dining at its best, visit the Bon Appetit Restaurant located across from the Dunedin Municipal Marina at the Best Western Plus Yacht Harbor hotel. Proprietors Peter Kreuziger and Karl Riedi have owned and operated the restaurant since 1976. Bon Appetit’s outside, open-air “In The Loop” bar features bayfront sunset views, live entertainment; $2.50 Yuengling Drafts, $4.00 House Wines, and $4.00 Wells. Happy hour is from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Ask about their new options such as Tucher Kristall Weizen, Dunkles Hefeweizen, and Cigar City Maduro Ale on draft.
