ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).
By Erica Smith
Thoreau on Thugs As long as the world shall last there will be wrongs, and if no man objected and no man rebelled, those wrongs would last forever. —Clarence Darrow If... the machine of government... is of such a nature that it requires you to be the agent of injustice to another, then, I say, break the law. — Henry David Thoreau, On the Duty of Civil Disobedience, 1849 We who in engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive. — Martin Luther King, Jr Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty. — Henry David Thoreau I woke up this morning to a discussion on CNN about whether it was fair to call the teens involved in the Baltimore riots “thugs.” The heated exchange between the commentators hinged on the political correctness of using a racially charged term to describe participants of civil unrest. The graphic on the screen actually read “should teenagers be labeled thugs.” In true morning ratings fashion, each of the speakers rallied around the need to find new labels for the behavior as if “violent agitator” or “targeted brick hurler” would be more acceptable descriptions. After all the circular logic and “political speak”, the discussion left me thinking…what exactly is the difference between a thug and what Henry David Thoreau attributes as civil disobedience? The Oxford dictionary describes a thug as “a violent person, especially a criminal” and lists the following synonyms: ruf-
fian, hooligan, vandal, hoodlum, gangster, villain and criminal. Civil Disobedience is defined as “the refusal to comply with certain laws or to pay taxes and fines, as a peaceful form of political protest.” Having watched the live footage and taking these definitions into account, it would be fair to label those involved with the looting as thugs. Destroying vehicles, stealing, burning property and vandalizing fall into the appropriately labeled categories of criminal behavior. So, yes, many of the participants were thugs. There is no need for political correctness or sugar coating when it comes to the blatant destruction of property. The lack of respect for life and property is not a tenet of any successful example of civil disobedience. The major difference between Baltimore and other major international examples of civil unrest is the main goal. Not one message of change came through the coverage of Baltimore on fire. Unfortunately, the very opposite occurred. The discussion for change needs a new focus. We need less shouting and finger pointing and more civil dialogue. History is changed by unflinching dedication to ideals greater than one’s self. Violence is the symptom of a broken system and rarely does it ever solve any problem. Maybe, we are all at fault for the lack of respect by failing to place importance upon personal responsibility and that is the very heart of the matter. But in the end, thugs may make history but they never change it.

Before becoming a 1998 University of Florida graduate, McDaniel worked as a veterinary pharmaceutical representative. Her love for dogs traces back to when she was young and showed them. She’s always been fascinated with breeding dogs and is the only veterinarian in Florida endorsed by the ICSB, an international organization known for its very stringent breeding procedures. STAR OF THE MIKE & MOLLY SHOW Coming to The Lakeland Center June 25th
The Central Florida comedy scene is hitting the “big” time in June as The Lakeland Center is set to host one of television’s best loved comedic funny guys. Known for his role “Officer Mike Biggs” in the nationally televised series Mike & Molly, comedian Billy Gardell brings his sidesplitting standup comedy to The Lakeland Center June 25th at 7:30pm. A native of Swissvale, Pennsylvania, Gardell moved to the Sunshine State in the mid 1980s, where he embarked on “the long road to Hollywood”. After performing at a local comedy club’s open-mic nights, Gardell soon began opening for Dennis Miller and George Carlin. Before long, he had established himself on television by co-starring in the critically acclaimed television series “Lucky.” Other television credits include “Yes Dear”, “Judging Amy,” “My Name is Earl,” “The Practice,” “Monk” and “Gary the Rat.” He has also performed in several major films, including Bad Santa, You, Me, and Dupree and Avenging Angelo. Gardell took the long road to Hollywood, 14

stopping at every small town lounge, military base and comedy club along the way. His comedy act took him to Los Angeles where his dedication to acting, along with touring as a stand-up comedian, allowed him to grow consistently in both arenas. His stand-up show is a powerhouse. His grounded, down-to-earth point of view strikes a strong chord with American audiences. Stories about his rough childhood, wild adolescence and new family life are executed with the skill of a master craftsman. As a standup comic, his comedy specials, “Billy Gardell: Halftime,” premiered on Comedy Central and “Billy Gardell Presents Road Dogs” premiered on Showtime. Since 2010, Gardell has hit it big time as the co-star alongside Melissa McCarthy in the hit CBS television series “Mike & Molly”, and on March 12, 2015, CBS announced the sixth season renewal of the show. Additionally, Gardell eagerly accepted the position as host of “Monopoly Millionaires’ Club”, which airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Game Show Network. Gardell continues to
tour as a stand-up comedian in addition to acting on-screen and making regular appearances on “NFL Today” on CBS Sports. A native of Pittsburgh who currently lives in Los Angeles, Gardell loves Steeler football, stand-up comedy and his wife Patty, and son Will. Tickets are on sale now for Billy Gardell Live on June 25th to The Lakeland Center and can be purchased for $39*, $49*, and $69 VIP* (*service charges will apply, VIP ticket includes meet and greet). TID BITS TRACEY’S
By Tracey Greene
Spring Time Bugs This spring, in the midst of it being hotter than normal and folks awaiting the usual “showers and flowers”, we received two not so fun surprises: bugs! Not the creepy crawly kind or even those pesky flying ones, these consist of the gurgly tummy in-the-bathroom variety and the stuffy nose, cough, sore throat variety. Yuck! Everywhere you turn either someone has this crude or just got over it. There’s nothing worse than being stuck indoors feeling the sickperson-blues instead of being up and out enjoying everyday life. I deem myself a pretty healthy person and typically do not get sick; trying to avoid people that I know are under the weather, drinking my green healthy juices and always keeping hand sanitizer with me for clean hands. I love my hand sanitizer; vanilla and lemon are my two favorite scents. It’s my invisible safety net while out in the public at many work related events and community events filled with lots of germy potentially sick people. Well, my invisible safety net failed me because mid April, I not only started feeling a little crummy it went into full blown crummy and it held on for two weeks! TWO weeks!! It went as little like this: Tuesday I started feeling a little queasy and not like my normal self, so I went home and got in bed to rest like a good girl. Wednesday morning awoke with a slight sore throat so I gargled with peroxide before continuing on with my day but by that evening I felt drained and hoarse. Thursday morning a worse sore throat but tried to work out because I came home early and stayed on the couch Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Ruined a planned weekend away at the beach with friends. This crap sucks! And, it’s amazing to me the amount of mucus sick humans can have in their upper body. I mean where does it all hide because I know that I coughed up, spit up ENTERTAINING POLK COUNTY FOR 10 YEARS!
and sneezed out my weight in yucky “stuff”. For me, some of the worst parts of being sick is taking the medicine. I don’t go to the doctor (unless it was a real emergency) and I don’t take a lot of medications. However, with this cuddly cold I was taking medicine left and right: for the aches and pains, for the cough, for the cold, for the sore throat, for the mucus. I felt like I was hanging in a medicine cloud for many days. Speaking of medicine, why does the medicine that is supposed to make you feel better have so many ingredients it in that are not good for you? Red Dyes, Green Dyes, High Fructose Syrup, Sucralose and Fillers. Do the manufacturers really want to make us feel better just to make us feel worse in the long haul? Why can’t medicine be medicine with no cheap fillers, fake colors and bad sweeteners? If you want dye-free, it costs more. Makes you want to go hmmm....so to take ingredients out of the recipe it costs more money. I don’t need my medicine to be pretty or taste like artificial cherry flavor. I just need it to make my aches and pains feel better. This chick is ready to get back to enjoying spring time and not fighting with sick time. I wish I could be more like Martha Stewart, when asked about getting sick in a recent TV interview, she replied, “I don’t. Who has time to be sick”. Brushing it off with a wave of her hand like being sick is just a waste of her time so she just doesn’t do it... Wow, I want that Martha Stewart pill. Maybe she should bottle that concoction and sell it on her website. Sign me up! Until then, it’s just me, my green juice and my hand sanitizer fighting the good fight against colds, flus and bugs everywhere. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS tracey@todayandtonight.com MAY 2015

MAY 2015
Every once in a while, I get writers block. It happens to the worst of us (that would be me! Ha!). My head is so crammed full of the events of the last few days and I can’t think of anything else but that. On April 19th, Michael Ray made his first Red Carpet walk at the Academy of Country Music Awards in Dallas. On April 24th he made his Grand Ole Opry debut. So what does that mean to someone who doesn’t understand the significance of the Opry? According to the Opry website “What began as a simple radio broadcast in 1925 is today a live entertainment phenomenon. Dedicated to honoring country music’s rich history and dynamic present, the Grand Ole Opry showcases a mix of country legends and the contemporary chart-toppers who have followed in their footsteps. The Opry, an American icon and Nashville, Tennessee’s number-one attraction, is world-famous for creating one-of-a-kind entertainment experiences for audiences of all ages.” It’s been called the “home of American music” and “country’s most famous stage.” Every year, hundreds of thousands of people make the trip across town or around the world to the Grand Ole Opry to see a show live. Names like Elvis Presley, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Porter Wagoner and more have all stood in that famed circle to sing…now add Michael to that list. April 27th Michael made the trip back to his hometown to shoot his first music video in Eustis. The video will soon be aired on CMT and GAC. April 28th Michael’s EP is being released exclusively to Wal-Mart. EP stands for “extended play record” or simply “extended play.” EPs cover the middle ground between a single and a full length album. They are usually around 5 or six songs in length. Musicians release EPs for a lot of reasons, but perhaps most importantly, they are frequently used as a promotional
Michael Ray at the Grand Ole Opry tool. EPs are used to introduce new bands, keep interest alive in an artist between full length releases, to help promote a tour and more. It’s been a busy few weeks to Michael…but one thing that he made sure to do, was to call the first radio station that believed in him and started playing his music five years ago, before he was signed to a label…and continues to play him. He did a lengthy interview with me the day of his Grand Ole Opry debut. He hasn’t forgotten where he has come from, who stood behind him. Being that he returned to his hometown for his first music video is another example of that. My heart has been filled with pride for the young boy that I met so long ago. From seeing him featured in Country Weekly Magazine to Entertainment Weekly…all I can think of is “wow, it was worth it…this is really happening!” The tears streamed down my face as I huddle up to the radio to listen to his Opry debut. To see his dreams come true, because you believed in him, and me…there are no words. So from just a small town DJ…my words to you are simple. “Thank you.” BY SARA MICHAELS Host of “On The Porch” Monday - Friday, 3pm - 7pm 97 Country WPCV, 97.5 FM

May I Put You On Hold No, no please don’t put me on hold….I can’t stand the music! You make a call. You pass the gauntlet of options and then you hear, “Would you mind if I put you on hold?” With less than a millisecond I have been put on hold while pleading, “No, please, it will only take a second….” Click….cure the tape loop Ding ding da ling ling ding ding da ling. Over and over. AHHHHHH! This music is designed to be so awful that you will go crazy, give up and hang up. One time I started to sing the harmony part to the music. I knew I may have been brainwashed. The music is edited so poorly and in time you may even come to believe, like a mirage, the music is over. Ah, a human, you think. You clear your throat, ready to speak, then… Ding ding da ling ling ding ding da ling. AHHHHHH! Because time is precious, I’ve devised a put a stop to the “on hold” music. I put the phone speaker on, then do laundry, perhaps Google, solve a quantum physics problem and then bake a peach cobbler. The only drawback to this is you have to allot time to make this kind of phone call while performing chores. You have to be certain it is not at the same time you might be expecting an important call because as sure as shootin’ that you’re about to make it through the cue line of callers, some call you need to take will come through. You will be faced with a moral dilemma as to wait ENTERTAINING POLK COUNTY FOR 10 YEARS!
for a human on the line with the crazy-making music or take the call that’s incoming. Recently, I had the on-hold music on for so long I kept humming the melody all day. Can’t they at least make it more than 4 bars of mind numbing chimes? Could they put on meditation music so I will be calm…why no, because they want me to get angry and hang up. Tenacity is one of my greatest strengths. Perhaps I could start a business where I wait for your phone calls to be answered by a human. It will only cost you $500.00 per hour; which is a very fair hazard pay price since doing this day after day would certainly be stressful enough to take years off your life. The worst of all, when the music stops, and the human finally speaks, I make my request and the answer is, “You’ll need to talk to my supervisor. May I put you on hold?” Click….. BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was American playwright Wilson Mizner who made the following sage observation: “Copy from one, it’s plagiarism; copy from two, it’s research.” • If you went into a restaurant for breakfast in the 1930s and ordered “cluck and grunt,” the server would know to bring you ham and eggs. • Irish mom Maria Jones-Elliott holds the distinction of having twins with the longest interval between the two births. In 2012, she went into labor almost four months before her due date. After two days of labor, one of the girls was born, but then the contractions stopped. While Amy, born weighing just 1 pound, 3 ounces, continued to improve in the neonatal intensive care unit, her sister Kate continued to grow in utero -- for another 87 days. Against all odds, both twins survived and are now thriving toddlers. • If you’re like 60 percent of American pet owners, your pet sleeps with you. • A recent study conducted by researchers at the Nara University of Education in Japan found that music affects people’s generosity. Specifically, if you’re listening to music you enjoy, you’re likely to be more generous than if there were no music playing at all. In this scenario, the inverse is also true: If you’re listening to a song you dislike, you’re more likely to be stingy.

ENTERTAINING POLK COUNTY FOR 10 YEARS!
BRIAN’S BRAIN
By Brian Bruchey
My Aching Back! Alright, I know I have written about my aging and the affects it has had on my memory, my eyesight, and my memory, but now there’s a new theme for my geriatric boogaloo: my aching back. Now, I’ve had back pains when I was younger, most everyone who moves a little from time to time does experience the occasional pain, but this is chronic back pain. This is pain that started for me early last year, and has stayed with me. At first I was like, “Bah, it’ll subside soon”, but then, after the first 300 straight days of it, I was like, “Dang it to heck, my flippin’ back is really starting to torque me off” (some of those words may not be totally accurate). Nothing against doctors, but I just don’t like going to visit them. It’s not that I’m afraid of them… okay, occasionally I do get overcome with fear, thinking that there is one hiding in the linen closet, ready to jump out and scream, “Open up and say ‘Ahhhh’ sicko!”, but who doesn’t have that fear? Right? I just don’t like taking the time to see doctors. I don’t like getting to the doctor’s office early in case I can get in before my scheduled time. I don’t like waiting with a bunch of sick people. I don’t like waiting past my scheduled time to see the doctor. I don’t like that the most recent Sports Illustrated magazine on the table beside me is from May of 2013. I also don’t like to make appointments to see a doctor. Eventually, my wife gets tired of hearing me whine about my back pain every time I sit down, lay down, get up, walk, or sneeze. So she makes my appointments for me. Late last year, she made an appointment, and I went to the doctor about my back pain. The doctor asked me some questions, sent me to X-Ray, then sent me a letter in the mail a week later that said, “You’re fine”. Well, my back and I strongly disagreed. So, I whined some more, and after another four months, my wife got tired of my whining again and made a new appointment for me with a different doctor.
Today, I went to that doctor. He asked me questions, bent me in different bendy and not-so-bendy places, and pushed on different parts of me. He scheduled an MRI. He gave me a shot to take away the pain. And he gave me a prescription to take to
get rid of my swelling. It was a good visit. I had gotten there early. There was only one person in the waiting room, and he wasn’t hacking and coughing. Actually, I wasn’t sure if he was sleeping or dead, and honestly, it didn’t really make a difference to me at the time; he was quiet. I don’t know if there were current Sports Illustrated magazines in the waiting room, because I actually got to see the doctor before my scheduled time. And best of all, almost immediately, a lot of my pain was gone. True, I still carried a lot pain from the Cincinnati Bengals losing to the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowls XVI and XXIII, but that pain is in my heart. And I still have the pain of seeing Jack Black movies, but that’s more of a pain in the butt, and surely incurable. The cause of my back pain and whether it will stay away has yet to be determined, but at least for now, I can once again walk like a normal 44-year old super handsome and brilliant man. For now, it’s no more walking like a 93-year old WWII Vetone legged-gout-ridden-osteoporosis-suffering-old man. Q&A
WITH A “GRATE” ARTIST By Mary Joye
I thought it was odd I found beauty in manhole covers. It began in Manhattan as I watched steam waft out of decorative and protective manhole covers. Low and behold, I’m not alone. Bobbi Mastrangelo also beholds beauty in manhole covers, but she turns the industrial into masterpieces. Bobbi graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at SUNY Buffalo. She became a teacher and mother up north. In Florida, she has been recognized worldwide for rubbings, reliefs and multimedia pieces that incorporate manhole cover art. She is the United States representative on the Russian based Sewers of the World Unite website. Other awards, among many, are from The National Association of Women Artists and two SOS Grants from the New York Foundation for The Arts & East End Arts Council. She has permanent exhibits in many museums. Her website: BOBBIMASTRANGELO. COM is chock full of news, blogs and gallery works for sale. How she created her art works and special art events are featured on her blog in photos and stories. Bobbi’s unique sculpture relief: “Inside 52GA-R” won “Best of Show” at Orlando Museum of Art’s 1st Thursday Exhibition “Inside/Out” in May of 2014. Her credentials are impressive. Her images are impressionistic. Her passion is to be environmentally minded and in turn, encourage others to do the same. Bobbi was gracious to take time out of her busy schedule to talk with us. T&T MAG: What inspired you to elevate the grate? BOBBI: My art preference was classical and impressionism, like Renoir and Monet. When our boys were little I went to the university to study art. In Dan’s Welden’s printmaking class I did so much experimenting, he advised me to get a single theme or style. After viewing photos of my art, Professor Lawrence Alloway pointed out circles predominated in my work. He wrote books about art and one of them venerated the common object. Through him, I began to appreciate contemporary artists. The minimalist artist, Sol Le Witt’s Art Book included two pages of manhole covers. Discovering the manhole as art was the Eureka moment. T&T MAG: You’ve won awards for being environmentally conscious. Please share your message with us. BOBBI: When Al and I were in Europe in the 1960’s, I was impressed with the magnificent public gardens. In the Netherlands, people were constantly sweeping and washing their stoops and front entries. There was such pride. I still carry that image. When I started to do manhole rubbings,

I often had to sweep off the litter first; cigarette butts, candy wrappers, hamburger wrappings, etc. It was disgusting. While out exercising, I noticed litter on the curbs and sidewalks. “What can we do about this disgusting litter,” I asked. I then read, “You Can Make a Difference” by Earl Babbie. You can get more info from my blog, which describes starting The CLEAN group activities. T&T MAG: What are you working on currently? BOBBI: National Post Card Week and visualizing my next art work. It will probably be a sculpture relief of the Winter Park peacock manhole cover. It’s a striking design. I may possibly incise a poem below it. This would be in the manner of the old head stones at the cemeteries engraved with messages. Karl Shapiro wrote a poem about the beauty of man covers and I wrote a response poem. Works in progress, sometimes evolve during their creation. ODE TO KARL SHAPIRO : I am struck by the beauty of manhole covers. Addicted to their cryptic charms. I have brushed away sand and debris To reveal stamped symbols. I have kneeled at steel rims, To record autumn images: Waxed dark crayons, across white paper Taped to cold, notched-whelked lids. I have seen steam rising From cold wintry grates. Glimpsed rusty iron peeping through Snowy tracks and icy treds. Summer’s steaming Con Ed irons Burned my hands: melted my crayons. Rubbings, photos, prints and sculptures Honor these urban artifacts: Preserving their beauty Never outdated. T&T MAG: Wow, what talent. What is your favorite story concerning obtaining an image? BOBBI: Often our teen age daughter, Anne Marie, was my protector making sure I was not out in traffic when taking photos or doing a rubbing of manhole covers. On an excursion in NYC I happened upon a pristine Con Ed Cover in The South Street Seaport. My latest project was to be a Con Ed Installation. I needed photos and a rubbing of that cover. So I was prepared with a camera and rubbing paper. This cover was so clean, no sweeping was required. Just as I began to do a rubbing of the cover, a Security Guard accosted me. “Lady, that is forbidden. Don’t you that know that this is a protected area on the National Registry.” Could I have been arrested? I don’t know, but frustrated, I stormed out of there and finally came across a Con Ed Cover in an ordinary neighborhood. But it was filthy and steam was escaping. I made a futile attempt to clean it, but I almost burned my hands, and left in frustration. T&T MAG: You were a teacher. Educate us how we can notice that art under our feet. BOBBI: Other countries such as Japan have beautiful reverence for manhole covers. Google it! I’m trying to get people to do the same here. T&T MAG: They seem to be a symbol of solid safety, do you think? BOBBI: Yes! These pieces of art protect our precious natural resources as well as our streets. Look down! Look up Bobbi’s website for more!
