Life Is But A Mist “For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” - James 4:14 (KJV) On Jan. 25, 2023, around 10 p.m. at AdventHealth Heart of Florida in Auburndale, my mother went home to be with the Lord. Ironically enough, she passed away the day before my birthday, Jan. 26. My mother had nearly died giving birth to me 37 years ago. So, her passing seemed oddly poetic, almost as if death was claiming what it wanted those many years ago. The best thing I can say about her passing was that her entire immediate family was in that room when she finally shuffled her mortal coil. I was there, by her bedside, along with my step-father, sister, niece, and nephew. Oddly enough, my nephew had arrived to Florida earlier that morning. It was almost as if my mother had been clinging onto life long enough for him to come and pay his last respects. Seeing your mother, the person who gave you life, lose their own life before your eyes is a harrowing experience. I still remember the heart monitor flatlining, the doctor announcing her time of death, and me kissing her now cold forehead before leaving the hospital room. If there was one consolation, the very next day was my birthday. Originally, I had intended to cancel my birthday party. What would have been the point if my mother couldn’t be there to celebrate. However, my decision to continue the event proved to be my best, as it proved to be my happiest moment amidst my darkest. Nearly everyone I knew and loved attended to shower me with love and praise. I thought I lost everything. I learned I still had

everything. Even then, it’s still a harrowing experience realizing that most of the people who raised you, most of the people you grew up with, are now long gone. My father passed away nearly five years ago, and all of my grandparents on both sides of my family passed away within the past decade or so. I am not without family. My step-father still lives with me and supports me. I still have my sister, along with my niece and nephew. And if there is a brighter spot in all of this, two years ago saw the birth of my great nephew, and this year will see the birth of my great niece. As for my own life, while I can’t say it’s been the best (then again, who can?), it also hasn’t been the worst. I still have people who love and support me. I’ve had a steady job for nearly a decade. I’ve won at least two awards. And I managed to publish my novel (self-publish, but at least it’s a book on a shelf). Even then, even after living for more than three decades (with the fourth slowing creeping up on me), I still feel how short life is. After all, it was short enough to see most of my immediate family pass away. And I know, in the back of my head, that my own passing is imminent. I hope to live a long and healthy life. I try (and usually fail) to eat right. I routinely exercise. And I don’t drink or smoke or chew or run with those who do. And yet, even then, I still can’t help but feel how short my own life is. It is but a mist that appears for a moment before vanishing. I hope to have lived a good life once I vanish. CELESTE

1. What group appeared at the San Francisco’s Cow Palace on Aug. 19, 1964? 2. Name the member of TLC who burned down her boyfriend’s house. 3. Paul Williams wrote a song for The Carpenters, but they rejected it. Name the future hit song. 4. Which group released “Are You Lonely for Me”? 5. Name the song that contains these lyrics: “Should I bring him down, should I scream and shout, Should I speak of love, let my feelings out.” Answers 1. The Beatles, in their first U.S. tour. The small 17,000-seat venue was chosen because promoters feared the

event would not sell out. Fans were so berserk by the end of the half-hour show that the Beatles were hustled away by ambulance. 2. Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. She put his shoes in the tub, sprayed them with lighter fluid, and set them on fire. 3. “An Old Fashioned Love Song.” Three Dog Night picked up the song in 1971 and took it to the top of the charts. 4. The Rude Boys, in 1991. 5. “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” by Yvonne Elliman, 1970. The song was included in the soundtrack for the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar.” It was originally entitled “Kansas Morning.” inside of a plastic bag (you can use the one that comes with the ice bucket). Touch all you want; germs are trapped inside.

a Brooms get worn down with use. a Struggling with your shower

cleanliness? Keep a bottle of shower sanitizer and a grout brush in the shower at all times. Use the grout brush if something pops up, and spray shower daily. This should greatly extend the time between deep cleanings.

a“I bought a television recently

and didn’t realize until I got it home that there are NO buttons on the unit itself. It operates only through the remote control. So, I put some hook and loop tape on the remote, and also on the TV and the side table. That remote stays put, and I can always find it when I want to turn the TV off!” -I.J.M. in New York

a Hotel rooms can be germ par-

adises. Try sticking your TV remote

Be sure to remove clumps of hair and dust bunnies after use, and give it a dip in soapy water or a spray with the hose weekly (not straw brooms, though). Hanging a broom will give it a longer life.

a “After we replaced our kitchen

knives with a nice block, we repurposed the magnetic strip to the garage, where it can hold a variety of tools and hardware.” -- E.P. in North Carolina

a If you want to keep a few bottles

of beverage cold in your hotel room, use one of the trash bins lined with a bag that’s filled with ice. The actual ice bucket is typically too small to use as a cooler, and if you use the bathroom sink, where will you wash your hands?
