Happy St Patrick’s Day 6 MARCH 2016

So here we are in March. The year is flying by already. It’s about that time we start heading into spring. I grew up in upstate New York and could not wait for spring time. As a kid, as soon as it hit 60 degrees we where in the pool. Not in Florida though. Too cold! Anyways, check out this issue for some great St Patty’s Day parties. I know a lot of our advertisers want to see you at their venue. Be safe and have a designated driver if you choose to partake in the green beer. Make sure to check out the great article about the Dan Signor Project. This band has a lot going for them. The Polk Music scene is great. Go check out the Live Music section for all the live performances around the county. Until next time! Expect More, Get More, We Deliver. Chris Douglas Publisher/Editor

ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).

By Erica Smith

The Chicken Chronicles Continue “People who count their chickens before they hatch act very wisely because chickens run about so absurdly that it’s impossible to count them accurately.” — Oscar Wilde “The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not smashing it.” — Arnold H. Glasow Newton’s 2nd law of motion provides “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction” and this immutable foundation of physics certainly applies to backyard chicken farming. When we first started our poultry experiment, Keith and I agreed our flock would be limited to three hens. Our first set of chicks provided the “twisted sisters,” two nearly identical black hens which we aptly named Charlotte and Scarlett. The other flock mate turned out to be a rooster and we quickly made the switch with the breeder bringing home a sweet yellow chick named Juliette. We should have paid attention to Newton’s law as Juliette became Romeo and he too was safely rehomed to a farm thanks to our amazing neighbors. We then added Anna, Emily and Savannah compliments of an old-fashioned chicken swap. Our plan for “only three” was resolute, however when you find a roadside chicken swap and three pullets the color of pure sunshine… well…you just make room for more. Introducing the “Sunny Girls” to the “Twisted Sisters” was a nail-biting, hand-wringing experience, especially for me who has yet to transform into a hardened chicken farmer. I chased after Scarlett and Charlotte as they pecked the new girls not really understanding that a true pecking order must be established in all flocks. After a few weeks the excitement settled and flock harmony was established. Charlotte became the flock leader, Scarlett is the enforcer, Anna is the beauty queen, Emily is temperamental and Savanah, well she

is the whipping post. The chickens continued to grow, the farm thrived and in November, we discovered our first eggs. Our favorite hen has always been Savannah who is a little spitfire of a chicken and the runt of the group. When I let the chickens out in the morning, she paces in front of the door like a raging bull and flies out of the run like a banshee. She is also the most affectionate of the girls and will tolerate a few precious minutes of lap time. Her feathers are perfectly golden with a tiny row of jewel-shaped dots around her neck that looks like a petite diamond necklace. Little did we know, hens without roosters will often exhibit a strange behavior called “going broody” where they want to sit on their eggs and hatch chicks. They puff out their feathers, refuse to leave the nesting box, cluck incessantly and eventually stop eating. Savannah was our first hen to “go broody” and we helplessly watched her waste away while desperately attempting to find a solution. We tried special treats, blocking her from the nest box and even a cool bath, but as she is our stubborn “little bull,” none of these tricks worked. After 8 weeks, we finally succumbed and built a “broody buster box” which consists of a suspended rabbit cage that magically makes the chicken “snap out” of the broody behavior. One day in the broody box and Savannah was “busted.” She has rejoined the flock, is gaining weight and once again, laying eggs. But, back to Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion…as they say, what goes up, must come down and tranquility at the Cypress Chicken Coop has been brief. Miss Emily decided to go broody last night and will be spending her spring break at the Hotel Broody Buster. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com

By Erica Smith On St. Patrick’s day everyone is IRISH! This day of feasting and frivolity has become an American tradition providing an excellent reason to enjoy a pint (or two) and celebrate the rich entertainment of Irish culture and heritage. Like many communities across the nation, Polk County offers several festival events that will have your “Irish Eyes” a smiling! While millions of visitors will flock to the Emerald Isle each St. Patrick’s Day for a weeklong celebration, the event has traditionally been a religious occasion. Surprisingly, up until the 1970’s, Irish laws actually mandated pubs to be closed on March 17 the observance of the saint day. The Irish government began a global campaign in the 1990’s to use St. Patrick’s Day as an opportunity to generate tourism and the rest is history. Another very interesting fact about the growth of Irish heritage is that more than 34.7 million American’s claim ancestry which is 7x larger than the population of Ireland! The Irish have observed St 10 MARCH 2016

Patrick’s Day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. As the holiday occurs during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage. This tradition would eventually change as Irish families flooded into the United States searching for new opportunities and discovered beef was actually more affordable in their new homeland than pork. The recipe for corned beef was most likely in inspired by the cured meats Irish immigrants enjoyed in the Jewish and Italian delis of New York and Boston. But how did we come to celebrate the life of Saint Patrick? Many legends hold that Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was actually born in Wales about AD 385. Far from being a saint, he considered himself a pagan until age 16 when he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish raiders. During this time, he worked as a shepherd and spent much of his time away from

ST. PATRICK’S DAY PIZZA WITH CABBAGE AND CORNED BEEF

We love this fun take on an Irish American Tradition. Since corned beef and cabbage was born in the states along with pizza, this recipe is the perfect melting pot of flavors! Heat oven to 425 degrees. Use a pizza stone or metal pizza pan For the dough: Purchase prepared pizza dough or use your favorite pizza dough recipe Toppings: 2-3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for the pizza pan 1½ cups green cabbage, sliced Kosher salt 1 potato, peeled and thinly sliced Freshly ground pepper 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded 1/2 cup Monterey jack cheese, shredded 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese 3-4 ounces sliced corned beef Toss the potato with 2 tablespoons olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast in a single layer on a baking sheet until golden, about 15 minutes. Roll the prepared pizza dough into a 14-inch round and place on a pizza stone or a large oiled pizza pan; drizzle dough with 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil. Scatter each of the cheeses, corned beef, cabbage and potatoes on top of the dough. Season with salt and pepper. Carefully slip the pizza onto a hot pizza stone, if using one, or place the pan in the oven. Cook until golden and crispy, 15 to 20 minutes. Serves 4 people.

people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace and becoming a devout Christian. He escaped from slavery after six years and according to his writing, a voice— which he believed to be God’s—spoke to him in a dream, telling him it was time to leave Ireland and he walked nearly 200 miles to the Irish coast. After escaping to Britain, Patrick reported that he experienced a second revelation—an angel in a dream tells him to return to Ireland as a missionary. He studied for more than 15 years in a British monastery under the tutelage of Saint Germain. During his training, he became aware that his calling was to convert the pagans to Christianity – especially the Druids. He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries across the countryside. He also set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish countrymen to Christianity. His mission in Ireland lasted for thirty years and he died on March 17 in AD 461. In his honor, the day of his death has been commemorated by the church as a feast day since the early 17th century. While much Irish folklore surrounds St. Patrick’s Day not many of the stories and traditions are actually substantiated. Some of this lore includes the belief St. Patrick raised people from the dead. He also is said to have given a sermon from a hilltop that drove all the snakes from Ireland. Of course, snakes have never been native to Ireland leading many historians to believe this miracle was a metaphor for the conversion of the pagans. The lucky shamrock, attributed to St. Patrick, was a tool to teach the Holy Trinity - this may also be another tall tale. In fact, the first written mention of this story did not appear until nearly a thousand years after Patrick’s death. The shamrock, which was also called the “seamroy” by the Celts,

was a sacred plant in ancient Ireland as it symbolized the rebirth of spring. By the seventeenth century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism. As the English began to seize Irish land and make laws against the use of the Irish language and the practice of Catholicism, many Irish began to wear the shamrock as a symbol of their pride in their heritage and their displeasure with English rule. He’s also responsible for creating the Celtic Cross as it was his direction to superimposed a sun, a powerful Irish pagan symbol, onto the Christian cross making an icon that united the newly converted to their previous heritage. One of the most enduring symbols of St. Patrick’s Day is the loveable leprechaun and his pot of gold. The original Irish name for these figures of folklore is “lobaircin,” meaning “small-bodied fellow.” These mythical characters were cranky souls responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies. However, unlike the “lobaircin,” our idea of the lucky leprechaun is more a result of Hollywood filmmaking than Celtic legend. In 1959, Walt Disney released a film called Darby O’Gill & The Little People, which introduced America to a very different sort of leprechaun than the cantankerous little man of Irish folklore. This cheerful, friendly leprechaun is a purely American invention, but has quickly evolved into a cherished symbol of both St. Patrick’s Day and Ireland. In case you were wondering…Erin Go Braugh or Erin Go Bragh simply means Ireland Forever however many have come to see the phrase as Free Ireland and has been used as a battle call. This St. Patrick’s day, bring out the green and celebrate one of the fondest Irish traditions…in fact over 83% of American’s will be wearing green!

THE PERFECT IRISH MARTINI

1oz Irish Whiskey (we recommend Jameson or Bushmills) 1oz Irish Mist Honey Liqueur 1oz Irish Cream (Kerrygold, Bailey’s or Saint Brendan) Combine all three liqueurs, shake vigorously over ice, strain and serve in a martini glass. Garnish with a shamrock. This is also a delicious shot or after dinner drink. You can increase the recipe with equal parts of each liqueur and serve using a pitcher.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY TATER TOT NACHOS

This recipe is fresh, funky, chunky and quirky…just like most of us on St. Patrick’s Day! INGREDIENTS 2 (16 ounce) bags your choice frozen tater tots 6 slices bacon 1 whole onion, diced 1 whole red pepper, chopped 1 whole jalapeño pepper, seeded and diced 1 cup cooked black beans, rinsed and drained if using canned (optional) 1 pinch salt and pepper 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded Prepared guacamole for topping Fresh lime for garnish and spritz Garnish with sliced green onions and cilantro, salsa and sour cream (optional) DIRECTIONS Cook potatoes according to package directions, and make sure they are very crispy (about 30 minutes). Meanwhile, heat a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Cook the bacon until crisp. Drain on paper towels and then crumble into pieces. Drain all but 1 tablespoon of bacon grease from the skillet. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil and when hot add the diced onion, red pepper and jalapeno. Season with salt and pepper, saute for 5-8 minutes or until soft. Add the black beans and cook 1-3 minutes or until warmed through. Remove from the heat and, using a spatula, place the mixture onto a plate. Preheat the oven to 450ºF. Arrange half the tater tots in the bottom of the skillet (used for cooking the bacon and peppers) or use a baking sheet. Sprinkle half the pepper mixture over the top of the tater tots, and then add half the cheese. Add the remaining tots, pepper mixture and cheese. Bake for 5-10 minutes or until the cheese is warm and melty. Remove the nachos from the oven and sprinkle the bacon over top. Dollop guacamole and sprinkle green onion and cilantro. Serve warm with sour cream, salsa and/or hot sauce, if desired.

SARA MICHAELS’

PORCH Eric Church always seems to want to appear mysterious, keeping his fans on their toes. But how cool is this? Eric released his 5th studio album (“Mr. Misunderstood”) without any marketing or promotion…it was a complete surprise. On November 3, 2015 members of Eric’s fan club were shocked to find a copy of his new album in their mailboxes. To me, I would be stoked! Not only did the fan club members get the album first, they got it before Eric had any plans to release it to stores for purchase! I am a fan of Eric and his music. His last album “The Outsiders” wasn’t exactly what I was expecting from him. It seemed a bit louder than normal with too much production. Thankfully, his new album “Mr. Misunderstood” (which IS available for purchase now), is more of a stripped down, simple Eric. The Eric I tend to gravitate to more. However; much like “The Outsiders” album…there doesn’t seem to be many “sure fire radio friendly Number Ones” on it. Sure, Eric will release songs to radio…I just don’t see any of them going to the top. Maybe he doesn’t care about all that? He doesn’t seem to be the “sell out” type. There have been MANY artists that I have come to love from the start of their career without any hits, but with GOOD music. Then all of a sudden we hear some no brain, catchy, pile of poo that they have been forced to record by their label to sell records, gets sent to radio…and it goes to number one. VERY frustrating. I’m incredibly grateful that Eric either 1. Has SIGN UP FOR OUR NEW WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER AT WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

never done this or 2. I started to enjoy his music after he passed this part of his career. My favorite thing about Eric is his powerful songwriting. Up to this point, he’s always used the “less is more” approach. Simple lyrics with powerful meanings. In “Mr. Misunderstood” he uses this approach; yet, it seems as if there is a much more artistic approach to his lyrics. Unless you are a fan of Eric, this is not an album where I would say “download the whole thing!” It just doesn’t seem to have that universal flair that his album “Chief” carried. So if nothing else, spend a few dollars and purchase “Record Year”, “Mixed Drinks About Feelings” and if you have kids…then you will relate to “Three Year Old.” I hope as you read this, you don’t think that this is a bad review…it is far from it. The majority of people that I come into contact with just like the songs that they hear on the radio, not full albums…so I guess I’m writing this for them. Those other types of people (ones who enjoy the full piece of art) DO exist, and for them…I say “buy the whole album!” BY SARA MICHAELS Host of “On The Porch” Monday - Friday, 3pm - 7pm 97 Country WPCV, 97.5 FM MARCH 2016

BRIAN’S BRAIN

By Brian Bruchey KIARA

Sleep Walker The other night, my seven year old son came into our bedroom, and just stood there…silently. He does this often, and every time, it instantly wakes up my wife…it’s like she has twenty-four hour kid-radar. That’s a nifty parental tool which certainly comes in handy during intimate moments that you don’t want to have a 7yr old boy to be a part of. Anyway, he comes in, totally asleep, but his eyes are half open. He’s sleep walking. And he does this at least once each night. Usually, when the boy comes in to our bedroom at night, I sleep through it, but with my wife’s radar, she wakes right up. And darn near every midnight visit, he’s there to pee. It makes no difference that he has his own bathroom right outside of his room, he comes to our bedroom to use our bathroom. The kid does a lot of things that don’t make sense when he’s awake, so why would he start making sense while he sleeps? On occasion, usually on nights that my wife has had a lot of wine, her radar malfunctions, and I wake up when the kid comes in. And on those occasions, I’ll look at him and ask, “Do you have to pee?” And oddly, he almost always starts to cry. So I pick him up, and carry him to his bathroom…he does his business, I carry him to his bed…and he’s completely back to sleep immediately. When we ask him about it each morning, he remembers none of it. The boy is a frequent sleepwalker. From time to time, he giggles in his sleep, he screams “Woooo” in his sleep, and he talks in his sleep. But almost every single night, he walks in his sleep. When I was his age, I was also a sleep walker. I often woke up in the morning, on the floor in the hallway, on the couch in the living room, or on the couch in the basement. Maybe it’s genetic, and gets it from me. His mother never sleepwalked as a child. Although, she does like to tell the story of her brother sleepwalking once when he was young…walked right into the kitchen, opened up the

cabinets, and peed onto the pots and pans. I guess nobody could ever say that he didn’t have a pot to piss in, because he definitely did. My dog kind of sleepwalks. He does his sleep walking while he’s lying down on his side. His legs move, but since he’s on his side, he’s not going anywhere. He must have reoccurring dreams of being a rabbit too, because he often twitches his nose and whiskers, just like a rabbit. Like I said, my wife…not a sleepwalker. I wish she was a sleep dancer. I’d install a pole in our bedroom. She’d eventually figure out what was happening, because sooner or later she’d wake up with some dollar bills in her garter. I stopped sleepwalking in my teenage years, after I developed problems with insomnia. Maybe I did the occasional napwalk, I don’t recall. I would like to start sleepwalking again. In fact, I would rather start sleepjogging. That way I could get some exercise without even knowing it. Maybe do some sleeplaundry, sleepcleaning, and sleepdriving. There have been many times I drove somewhere, and didn’t remember the drive. I’ll let you in on a little secret, I sleepwrote this entire article while sleeptyping. Gotta go now, feeling sleeping. TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

Sick and Tired of Being Sick

By ANASTASIA ZIVIC

MOLLY MCHUGH’S IRISH PUB

T&T MAG: Who are you inspired by? CHRIS: My brother. He’s always been a go-getter and never lets anything stop him from what he sets out to accomplish.

111 S Kentucky Ave, Lakeland, FL 33801

(863) 686-6231

T&T MAG: What is the craziest thing you experience as a bartender? CHRIS: I see all kinds of weird and crazy. There was a wild car chase outside not too long ago. And lots of drunk stuff. You can only imagine.

T&T MAG: Pick one – Kitten videos, Star Wars, Death Metal? CHRIS: Star Wars, yeah.

T&T MAG: If you could pour a drink for anyone in the world, who would it be and why? CHRIS: My mom. She doesn’t drink – she’s not a drinker, but I definitely would like to see her get hammered one time. She’s pretty funny, so I can only imagine what a riot she would be!

T&T MAG: Your favorite drink to drink? CHRIS: Irish whiskey. T&T MAG: What is one thing the average person does not know about you? CHRIS: That I actually can be nice!

T&T MAG: Name something on your bucket list? CHRIS: To go to Ireland. My sister lives there, and I hope to get over there one day.

T&T MAG: Why should people come to your bar and have a drink? CHRIS: Because it’s a friendly bar, a neighborhood pub, so people speak to each other when they come here. It’s a fun place, and there are no distractions, like tv’s, so everyone has a good time speaking and conversing with each other.

T&T MAG: What do you do in your spare time? CHRIS: Sleep.

T&T MAG: Do you have any hobbies? CHRIS: I like to go to the beach, drink, sit in a tiki bar.

18 MARCH 2016

T&T MAG: In closing, you’d like to say... CHRIS: That’s what she said.

Typically, I am a pretty healthy person that does not succumb to every little sniffle, cold or sore throat that comes my way. One “bad” cold once a year does me just fine. When I do get sick, I am prone, since childhood, to keep a deep cough for a long time. This has led to bronchitis, pneumonia and at the very least strained backs, pulled stomach muscles and sore ribs. I wash my hands a lot, use hand sanitizer often and am aware of my surroundings and surfaces that my hands are touching – people, too. Over the past few years, I’ve become more aware of my exposures to handling other peoples’ bad habits. I’m out in the public at community events or delivering magazines to highly (human) trafficked locations. Let’s just say that I started thinking about all the people and all of their hands that aren’t washed maybe as much as mine are… basically, I don’t want YOUR funk, ‘cause I don’t have ANY funk. However, lately I’ve had a string of – let’s just call it – bad luck…over two months ago, I awoke in the wee early hours to a throbbing sore throat. OH NO! I sipped some cool water and tried to go back to sleep. A few hours later I got up and realized that my throat was indeed sore and not just a bad dream. So, the peroxide gargling began which helps to boil out the infection. I’m also a fan of using warm salt water the same way. The old remedies work wonders – only two days and I feel fit as a fiddle except for the cough. That damn cough – slithered its way deep into my chest to wreak havoc for more than four weeks. Mucus, where does all of that mucus come from? Where can it be hiding? Our heads, lungs etc. just aren’t large enough to hold all that gross “stuff”. As I was finishing up the second go-around of over-the-counter cough meds (did I mention that I hate takings medicine?) my cough was finally starting to die off. Probably helped that I was forced to go to the store to buy more meds – which weren’t the usual older/expired ones in the bathroom closet. Cough almost gone and now it’s time to be back in the public having a great time at community events: Friday night outdoor event, Saturday all day outdoor event and Sunday Super Bowl party at our friend’s house. Looking forward to time with friends at our annual Super Bowl Party – a kiss and hug hello from the party co-host. Let

the party begin! As the evening gets late into the game, said co-host starts to feel a sickness coming on and as most guests are leaving, sneaks off to bed. I’m one of the last to leave and get the nice surprise to find out that co-host has gone to bed sick – YIKES! The first thought in my mind was “a kiss and hug hello from the co-host”. Two days later and my household has a nasty NEW strain of sickness to fight off. This one was a just a crummy- zapyour energy- feeling weak kind-a cold. Needless to say, I pretty much stayed in the house. I worked from home, rested and tried to stay out of the public until feeling better. Two weeks later, it was time to emerge to go to a “family gathering” for dinner in Disney Springs. You know, the kind of place that has thousands of tourists and locals all mixing together with a lot of dirty germs hanging around everywhere. Well, we had a really nice time, great weather and, apparently, someone’s leftover FLU remains just waiting to attach itself to ME! Two days later, tummy started churning and it was ALL down hill from there – you know how the rest of THAT story goes! Since I am more considerate, when the yucky tummy started, I pretty much stayed upstairs in bed – sleeping as much as possible, sipping on water and ginger ale, working whenever I could keep my head up and keeping my sick funk to myself! I stayed inside for 4 days. I knew that I started feeling better when I became a carb monster, wanting to eat everything in sight. Did you know that WAWA has the most awesome Very Berry Muffins? Delish! I love WAWA. Thank you for coming to East Polk and being two minutes from my house. Now, I’m told this has probably all happened to me in such a short time because: A. Dumb/Bad Luck B. My immune system is just shot right now, and A LOT more susceptible than normal to getting all of this crap floating around in the public. Let’s just say that I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. I’ve experienced three different strains circulating around our county and that will do me just fine – thank you. I’m over my quota for the next year or so, so please wash your hands, cough and sneeze into your arm not your hands and keep your funk to yourself.

THE TWISTED TEAPOT TEA ROOM An Unforgettable Tea Experience

By Loren Spangler Photos By Chris Douglas The history of tea is spread across multiple cultures over the span of thousands of years and originated in China during the Shang dynasty as a medicinal drink (1600-1046 BC). Boiling tea occurred during the Han dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), and during the Sui dynasty (589-618 AD), adventurous Buddhist Monks traveled across the East Sea and introduced tea to Japan. “Because of our mother’s love for tea, my sister and I dreamed about having our own tea house,” says Twisted Teapot Tea Room owner Tara Messieh. “We talked about it and decided all the things we liked and didn’t like.” Years later, when she mentioned to her husband (orthopedic surgeon Dr. Samuel Messieh), that she wanted to open a tea room, her vision was already in place. As a goal, she was dedicated to providing an unforgettable afternoon tea experience with quality food, an enchanting atmosphere, and exceptional service. Foremost with The Twisted Teapot, the customer always comes first; whether catering to a particular need or delivering the perfect special occasion. stunning Victorian Quilt made in 1875), diamond pattern floors, crystal chandeliers, and comfortable furniture, customers are overwhelmingly charmed. Immersed in a perception of beauty and magic, interior designer, Tim Bryant made Tara’s dream a reality. The result was creating a forty-five seat tea room that’s lovely, well-dressed, and squeaky clean. With love and hope on gossamer wings, Tara opened for business approximately one year ago. “All of our tea here is handpicked and imported to us in strong, leak proof containers. My mother used to say that every time a package is opened, tea loses part of its aroma, so we keep the product sealed until the exact time of brewing.” Although Tara is Canadian with a Scotch heritage, her name is Irish from her mother’s side. Tara means Seat of Kings and the designation of sophistication fits like a glove. From the very first moment a customer enters inside, olfactory sensations of aromatic teas and home baking dominate. “This is our version of a classic tea room with authentic silverware and exotic teas…but it’s not stuffy,” she adds.

Her name is Claudia. Quiches & Sandwiches: Turkey Croissant, Chicken Salad, Royal Roast Beef Chibatta, Maple Ham w/Cheese, Quiche of the Day, Soup & Sandwich. Selection of Teas (twenty-two blends): Bengal Chai, Berry Berry (concoction of dried fruit and spices), Birthday Tea, Black Velvet, Earl Grey, Empress, English Breakfast, Mango Amazon, Peach Apricot, Lapsang/Souchong (smoked), African Rooibos, and South Pacific. Note, teas are brewed at exactly 170 degrees (green) and 195 degrees (black). Of special interest is the impressive teapot logo: A Scottish Thistle, Irish Shamrock, Crown (ode to the Royal Family), and a Twisted Spout (representing family and friends entwined). Be sure to check out the garden-inspired courtyard with tea plants. “We are happy and have fun here,” Tara says with a warm smile. The two-story structure with a complete wraparound porch was built as a farm house in 1923 by the Cunningham family. At the time, the surrounding land consisted of orange groves. Over time, it’s been a boarding house, law office, and two flower shops. “Everyone who has ever lived here has visited us. Once, the granddaughter of the original family stopped by for tea. and showed us her bedroom. It’s where one of the dining rooms is now,” says Tara. BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was Founding Father Thomas Paine who made the following sage observation: “He who would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.” • Most people prefer to kiss with their eyes closed; however, of those who do prefer to keep their eyes open, the vast majority are men. • It’s well-known that a certain segment of native Londoners speak in a dialect known as Cockney, which makes frequent use of rhyming slang -- some classic examples are “dog and bone” for “phone” and “apples and pears” for “stairs.” A more recent addition to the vocabulary is “Donald Trump,” which, for at least the past 15 years, has been used as an equivalent for going to the bathroom. • If you watch TV or movies at all, you’ve probably seen some variation of the Humane Society disclaimer “No animals were harmed in the making of this program.” You may not have considered that it’s also applicable to insects, but those who make the programs certainly do. In fact, if you see a bug being destroyed in a contemporary movie, it’s a safe bet that the bug was dead before the scene was shot. There are even people who stuff dead bugs with a sort of cream to fill it out -- and to ensure a satisfying squish for the camera.

MUSIC BAND PROFILE

BACKSTAGE PASS

I

t’s no secret why after twelve years in the local music scene Dan Signor has become a beloved figure with both fans and venue owners. The distinctively soulful voice coupled with classic, yet fresh, sumptuous keyboards makes listening to the talented Florida import’s original tunes immensely satisfying for even the most discerning ear. With a winning line up that includes easy fluidity from Jerry Escobedo on drums and the elegant fingerwork of David M. Brimer on guitar, as well as Signor providing additional guitar and bass, The Dan Signor Project is well on their way to capturing and captivating audiences nationwide and beyond; proving again why the Heart of Central Florida’s den of burgeoning talent is on the precipice of a mainstream explosion. Although the band carries his name, Signor is quick to point out the band’s appetite for musical inclusiveness. The project, with a capital “P” evolved from the desire to collaborate with and feature other artists as to build a tight-knit community of players. The Lakeland-based trio frequently draws from a skilled collective of savvy area musicians to add to their musical offerings. The day I sat down to chat with the band was no exception. Tapped as one of the six acts invited in to

be a part of the inaugural shoot of Live from the Music Ranch, an intimate performance series being filmed at the legendary Music Ranch, in Lakeland, FL, the prevalent practice of adding to the band set the scene for the conversation that was to come, and most likely not by chance. As the last act on the filming schedule, they found themselves with a small audience comprised of local musicians, which included songstress Adrienne Kneebone of the Brian Sutherland Band. True to Dan Signor Project form, Kneebone was invited to join the group to sing harmony during the recording of their original tune, God Awful Morning Light. Following their set, Signor, Escobedo and Brimer sat down to share their mission, thoughts on the current state of the music in the area and their hopes for the future. T&T MAG: You’re originally from New York, and you’ve been playing here professionally for some time. Twelve years is a long time to build up that name recognition. How did you guys meet? DAN SIGNOR: Lakeland has been good to me, I mean, very good to me and to us as a band and very receiving of what we do. When I moved here I got really lucky, I just happened to meet the right

players. There was something before this, but then I met Jerry.

JERRY ESCOBEDO: When I first moved to Lakeland I joined an original indie-rock band and the bass player in that band knew Dan, and we got introduced through him. T&T MAG: Where did you come from, Jerry? JE: Wachula! Cowboys and orange groves and cattle. DS: When I needed a drummer I said, “hey”! JE: [Laughs] Yeah. DS: When he came along the vibe got really good - original and funky and groovy, and everything just seemed to jive. And I said I needed another piece... And in rolls David Briner. DAVID M. BRINER: I’m the only guy who is from Lakeland, but I didn’t get my musical start until I moved to LA. I moved there when I was 19 in 2005 and within six-months I was playing behind Jackson Browne, and I was thrust into that whole LA singer/songwriter world at 19/20 as a guitar player. I lived there for four years, then moved back here, then left again for another four years, to Reno, then Portland, Oregon. I really wasn’t playing because I had also toured with Hanson after playing with Jackson Browne, and that was kind of a horrible experience... DS: Mmmbop DMB: I wasn’t all in to what we did so.. and then they fired me. T&T MAG: Wait a minute. You toured with Hanson, the Mmmbop guys, and they fired you? DS: Because he played too well. It happens, when you get outshined. T&T MAG: In my opinion, I always liked to be around people who are better than I am. It makes me better. DMB: I thought that I was adding to the music, and the fans liked it, but it was just too much exposure, I guess. That was back in 2008. And then I really didn’t play again professionally again until 2013, when I moved back here, and started all over again, like you do. When I heard about Dan Signor, I was like, who is this guy playing every night? Must be something to that. And a week later, a mutual friend calls me at 6 p.m. on a Friday, hey, you want to play a gig tonight, I show up, it’s for Dan Signor. DS: That was Scotty McCorkle. DMB: Yeah, he worked with my dad. So I show up, I don’t know what we’re playing, I don’t know any of the songs. And we played an incredible gig. Every song that he pulled out I somehow knew though I didn’t know it. At that point, I thought, this is my home.

DS: I was sold after that. And I kind of just started to repeatedly ask him if he wanted to play until he was in! One thing I do want to say, this is family. There’s a kinship between all of us that is very much a family feeling. And without that it’s hard to push forward and write. It’s not all about how well somebody plays, it’s also about how you get along behind the scenes, because any success in a band there has to be that element of strong family and friendship. T&T MAG: I always say that to make a name for yourself you have to be together. Be a family. You can’t break up the band. And you have to learn what each other smell like when you smell bad. And then you have to say, well, you stink, but you stink good. DMB: Oh God yeah. [laughs] DS: You’ve got that part down. DMB: This is the way I like to put that, and it’s kind of hippie dippie, but that’s me. There’s a guy in town named George Lowe, he created Space Ghost, from the the Cartoon Network/Adult Swim talk show Space Ghost Coast to Coast, he did the voice, and he lives in a Frank Lloyd Wright house, and every time I meet him, he’s like, “man, you and me, we’re in the ether”, and to me it makes a whole lot of sense. When we play together, we’re in the ether. And it’s not like we’re up above everybody, looking down, it’s just like we coalesce into this unit that is like, one. And you occupy that space when you play together, and then you come back down. And it’s like a higher, spirituality thing. T&T MAG: I was just speaking about that with someone else here at the Live from the Music Ranch filming today, Ed Munson, from the Toni Brown Band, and he made a comment to the effect of throughout life having felt like an outsider. We determined that was a commonality among people here today, the musicians and creatives and producers. Everyone being so unique, but finding a unity in all being different, and that is what makes you similar. JE: There’s a like mindedness there. DMB: It’s like in a sea of yellow there’s little dots of red, and you’re like, hey, there’s one like me, and you gravitate toward them. T&T MAG: That’s fantastic. I love it! Very quotable. DMB: Well, I am an English major [laughs]. T&T MAG: So, I know, Dan, that you’ve been interviewed by the magazine before, several years back. What would you say has changed since that time? DS: Last time I spoke to you guys I was bending over backwards to make something work for this band so that it all gelled. I was kind of sacrificing my own input and style, and now I feel it comes naturally and it’s more organic. It’s a very natural vibe with these guys, and they get what I’m putting out and they are there for me, and me for them. T&T MAG: What do you want people to take away from

a show? What can they expect when they come to see you play live? DMB: I think we want them to know it’s not just a cover band at a bar, it’s a show, it’s an experience, it’s unpredictable. JE: Different every time.DS: You never know what’s going to happen. There can be another guitar player that comes and jams with Brimer. There’s a fiddle player that will come and it’ll switch things up. I try to put a different flavor on each show each week. We keep the door open for improv. And that’s spur of the moment feeling stuff. Hopefully the crowd is feeling it too, we hope they take that away. DMB: We need people to know if they are there, they’re part of it, they set the tone. T&T MAG: And I think that’s right. That’s part of the inclusiveness, not just with the local musicians, but with the audience. JE: Exactly T&T MAG: How do you guys write? What’s your inspiration? For example, Dan, you’re a piano player, so are you looking to that music, piano music, and at musicians providing that kind of sound, and from there you’re working your way through being inspired by the best of the best...which then is going to come across in what you write? DMB: Every time I ride in this guy’s car he’s pulling out a lot of great music, like, soul and singer/songwriter acts, and I’m like, who is this? Who is that? DS: I think sometimes it’s about a simplicity, too. I do also like just a solo, folksy guy on guitar, and I write a lot on guitar because I’m not a great guitar player and it helps me simplify things. If I get on piano I try to do too much because I’m comfortable there. When I write on guitar I can strip it down and that’s where a lot of my best, I think, music is written. There are a lot of things that inspire me. Lyrically, there’s got to be substance there. Something you can catch on to. A story there. T&T MAG: So, what now? What are the band’s plans? Are you recording? DS: Yes! We want to let everybody know there’s a place to get a quality product in Lakeland, we’ll be laying down tracks at Center Door Productions, owned by Patricia Russell Boone, and we couldn’t be happier. T&T MAG: We’ll be on the lookout! Dulcimer ensemble that performs monthly in the downtown Winter Haven Park. What instruments do you play? I play the guitar, mainly. My bridge to learning that was with an old Ukulele that my Aunt Gladys unearthed in her closet. It was really cool, since it had a drawing of a hula girl on the front! Are you trained or self taught? I took piano lessons from the time I was five. I began learning Ukulele when I was a Girl Scout. When I was in 8th grade, my Grandmother and I saved S & H Green Stamps and I “purchased” my first guitar. I immediately become involved in High School choir ensembles and added a touch of Folk Music to the community. I played in a duo with another young lady, and we sang harmony as we strummed along. The rest is history.

BETH WAINSCOTT REASONER The Art Of Making Music and Building Community Walking down Central Avenue in Winter Haven, I heard the most heavenly music. As I turned the corner, there was Beth Wainscott Reasoner and her friend playing. She lives in Lake Wales and shared some comments but you have to see her perform! How did you get inspired to play outdoors? The day we met was inspired by Nat West, a dear musician friend of mine. Originally, my roots to outside music are from Girl Scout days in Indiana. It seems right. I’ve also been part of Farmer’s Market events in the Midwest. Down here in the Winter Haven area, I’m on board to help promote live music. Nat is a catalyst for seeing that this happens, too. I notice you sometimes play in different groups. I’ve been so fortunate to have a circle of musicians here. My parents retired here from Indiana almost 30 years ago. They introduced me to local musicians, namely Nat West and Eddie Bruner. (Pickin’ in the Park’s “Harmony Grits” and “Grateful Alive”) I 34 MARCH 2016

moved as a full-time resident in October of 2012. It was just merely coincidence (or was it?) that I meet Laura Greenberg (violin/ fiddle) at my church. She and I were helping accompany a choir piece and she approached me asking, “Do you know anything about Irish fiddling?” Consequently, I do believe in Divine Intervention. I’d been longing to play Irish music again but didn’t know how I would go forward with this wish. We’ve been rehearsing faithfully for over three years. We have a nice “book” of Celtic tunes. The name of our duo is “Wylde Thyme”. The chemistry is good. We feature each individual in the ensemble. Thus, the formation of our four member ensemble “Celtic String Along” came to be. I’m also a guitarist/vocalist in the five member Irish ensemble called “Mrs. Murphy’s Chowder”. Sally Anderson, the organizer of this group, has also been a great influence. This particular ensemble is in their 3rd year as a featured act at the Ormond Beach Celtic Festival. (This year we will perform on Saturday, April 16th.) Sally has also welcomed me to her Musical Hammers

Why is music so good for the soul? Music is like art. It can help you sort things out. With my music journey, it began as a shared experience. I grew and my music tastes and styles grew as well. Being a child of the 60s, there was wonderful Folk music and amazing role models. I was intrigued by artists like Judy Collins and Joan Baez. I embraced the tight harmonies of The New Christy Minstrels and Peter, Paul, and Mary. I didn’t begin writing my own songs until later on. Music helped me with shifts in my life and there were Coffee Houses where I performed. Making music is something you can take with you. I’ve been able to take my music with me throughout personal changes. It has been a comfort zone. My guitar is like one of my best friends. Wait. Let me rephrase this: My guitar IS my best friend. It helps me remember how lucky I am to have this gift of music. It helps me remember how blessed I am to have met so many mentors. It helps to connect and ground me to the “true me”. Any upcoming shows? We are hoping to continue a monthly appearance at the BrewPop, so keep an eye out for this! The local Scores Family Sports Cafe (downtown Winter Haven) is having a very special Irish Night on Friday, March 11th, 5-8pm, with an authentic Irish dinner and music by Celtic String Along. It is by reservation only, so if you are interested at all, please contact me for more information at the following phone number: (863) 547-8591. *I am handling the reservations, and there are only 45 spots,

so HURRY! On Sunday, March 13th, 5-8pm, Tanner’s Lakeside in Winter Haven will host Celtic String Along for an evening of music while you dine On Tuesday, March 22, 11:30am-1:30pm, I will be performing with Mrs. Murphy’s Chowder at Jackie’s City Hall Cafe in Haines City. *Every day, Monday through Friday, Jackie’s City Hall Cafe has LIVE lunchtime music!!! Yeah, that was a shameless plug for them. Not many places around that do this sort of thing, so I encourage everyone to come and experience it! Tell us about music in Polk County. My husband, Barry, a retired band director and I moved here primarily to escape the harsh winters of northwest Indiana. The music scene is alive and WELL here! The support of the Friday evening concerts in the Winter Haven Park is amazing. The Derry Down project is another testament that the town is invested in the future of music. Monthly street events help the ambiance and the exposure of our special music is a boost. Any final thoughts? I strongly suggest if you play a musical instrument, you find time to play! Purely from statistics about brain health, Music and better brain function are hand in hand. The deep joy I have when I play fun music with friends is absolutely priceless. My young grandsons are now playing fiddle along with my guitar accompaniment. Talk about JOY! The beat goes on...... Amen. How can people get in touch with you? Facebook. I’m The Person You Laugh At With A Small Dog People laugh at people like me. Heck, I used to laugh at people like me. You get older. You have no children. You get a dog. Suddenly, you have a four-legged child! It happened to me and I swore I would never get a dog smaller than a beagle. `“That can’t be a whole dog!” I would think when I saw people with a Chihuahua, a Dachshund or a Miniature Pinscher. Now I have a dog who appears to be all three of those in one. I’m writing this story as a warning to those of you who laugh at people like me. Let me tell you how easy it is to become hugely attached to a small creature. Innocently, I was going through Overstock.com to look for office chairs. Getting bored with it, I looked on the top menu and noticed a “Pet Adoptions” category. Overstock.com has pet adoptions? Yes, they do. It is their charity and a darn fine one. You type in a few things about yourself such as a zip code and zippity-do-da, up pops pictures of pets looking for homes. It tells you where they are, what they are, if known and I got hooked. This little min-pin mix photo looked as if was saying, “You can get chairs anywhere, but can you please come get me out of Doggie Auschwitz?” That is what many dog pounds are. This dog did not even have a name, just a number, so if you work at the pound, I’m sorry but I just can’t handle it. There’s got to

be a better way. Thanks for all the no-kill shelters out there. When I went to pick up AZ48207, this was not a dog. This was a person in a dog suit. This was a captive of the dog Nazis who needed a home and it would be mine. I sprung him out of the prison camp and wish I could have set them all free. We named him Ace and as soon as he was cured of kennel cough, there I was buying soft beds, elite dog park memberships, buying treats and having “new toy Saturday”. Ace does remind me to have some dignity, though. I bought him a little jacket to wear when it’s cold and he looked up at me as if to say, “Please don’t be one of those crazy ladies that puts clothes on little dogs. People will laugh at you!” QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com
