SCUSTOMS

By Elizabeth Morrisey For more than 40 years, JC’s Customs has been serving generations of customers in the Winter Haven community. And it’s the customer loyalty and dedication of the employees that has kept the business going. What started with window tinting is now a complete automotive customizing accessory facility known for its suspension kits, wheels, truck parts and other items. “From the inside out and front to back, we can provide any add on options,” says owner, Kevin Cheeseman. - “There is not another company that does what we do with all the services we provide in Winter Haven.” As customers asked for more options, the company listened and transformed as it needed to. Now it is four businesses under one: EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

window tinting for cars and home and office, the accessory division and electronics. “Not many shops do all of that or as well and as long as we’ve done it,” he says. “We are customer-service focused and try to have it done the way service was designed,” Cheeseman explains. “We do the right thing and provide the best service.” In 1975, the company was founded but purchased a few years later by the “late and great” Peter Bonifay. He was a mentor to many people, including Cheeseman who started with the company under Bonifay in 1985. “This was my calling,” he says and he purchased the company in 1998. JC’s Customs has nine employees and many have been with the company more than 20 years. “Our employees help make our business. Our salesmen have more than five years experience and two installers have been here more than 22 years,” he says. “We make sure our employees have a home and we are giving

back to them.” Jason Smith has been an employee for 21 years and he works on just about everything. “I get to work on giant toys,” he says. “I do mostly mechanic work and wheels and tires.” He says JC’s is loyal to its employees and treats him well. Why does he think the company has survived as long as it has? “It’s the way they do business. They treat every vehicle like it was their personal vehicle and want the customer to be satisfied,” says Smith. JC’s also supports local charities and functions, such as Jeepin’ With Judd – an annual event to support the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. JC’s has been a sponsor of the event for four years. “It helps give back to the local communities and supports people that are in need,” Cheeseman says. To help continue to catapult JC’s business, the company recently remodeled the 10,000-square-foot building to provide more useable work space for even more services. “What we are doing now, I didn’t think we would be 20 years ago,” Cheeseman says. “Our business model has changed.” JC’s is now focusing on more technology and can now install back up cameras, driver recording systems and other car safety features. And once again it came back to customer demands for high quality services and products. “Our business has transformed as the customers have asked, we’ve added more services,” he says. The company also has competitive pricing. “It’s a task for small businesses to stay as competitive as possible and stay in business. We fight it every day. Our goal is to educate our customers in the difference between buying parts online versus us helping with parts and installation,” Cheeseman says. “We need to be ahead of the curve.” The company provides training for its employees by attending trade shows and seminars.

Some of JC’s unique installations include electronics for boats, tractors and commercial vehicles. “Work or play … we are finding solutions,” says Cheeseman. They offer well-known brands such as Rockford Fosgate, Alpine, Wet Sounds and others. Some of their most popular installations are large suspension systems with color coordinated accessories as well as wheels and tires on pickup trucks. Cheeseman says it is also fun to lower cars to make the vehicle look like it’s sitting on the ground. “We’ve been blessed to see generations coming through our doors,” he says. “They are valuing the service we provide.” Located at 515 5th ST SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880, 863-293-5555 or www.jcscustoms.com

EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

Why Trump? When I first started this column, I promised myself I wouldn’t write anything about Donald Trump. That promise has since been tossed out the window now that he’s been acquitted of his abuses of power and obstruction of justice. Ever since he was elected, and now that he’ll probably be re-elected, I’ve been asking myself: “Why?” After everything he’s said and done, why do so many of his supporters continue to support him? Oh, I know they have “reasons.” But let me use this column to address them: “He’s making America great again.” No, he’s not! America’s global perception has fallen under him. According to U.S. News, ever since Trump took office, America’s ranking as the “best country in the world” has dropped from #4 to #8. “He’s a good Christian President.” No, he’s not. A good “Christian” President would inspire people to attend church. Instead, church membership has reached an all-time low, with membership rates falling by 70% since 1999, as Gallup reports. Now only half of Americans are church members, and more are identifying as having “no religion.” Somehow, having the physical embodiment of all Seven Deadly Sins in the White House isn’t helping. If anything, his blatant hypocrisy has inspired more #ExVangelicals to #EmptyThePews. “He’s growing the economy.” No, he’s not! His tariffs have hurt American businesses. According to the Federal Reserve, American farms have seen “low commodity prices and rising input costs strain farm incomes”, while manufacturers suffer “higher costs due to tariffs, and ongoing trade policy uncertainty.” But that’s okay! Trump’s “fixing” the problem by spending more than $28 billion on farm subsidies, more than twice the cost of Obama’s 2009 auto bailouts, as Bloomberg reports. Trump’s fixing a problem he created in the first place. How’s that helping the economy?

“He’s kicking out the illegals.” No, he’s not. Illegal immigration was declining long before he took office. Illegal border crossings are at their lowest point in the past 50 years, according to Customs and Border Protection. Even with Trump cracking down more on “illegal” immigrants, that’s not a good thing. His immigration restrictions will do more to hurt the economy than help it. Contrary to popular belief, immigrants do not “steal” jobs. They actually help create new jobs and tax revenue that stimulate the economy. Trump’s restrictions will only cut back on the number of new employees and employers. As the New York Times reports, immigration rates fell to 200,000 immigrants annually as of last year, the lowest level in more than a decade. Under Trump’s restrictions, if these rates remain constant “rather than a more normal one million [immigrants], gross domestic product would be $1 trillion lower a decade from now.” “He’s bringing Americans together.” No, he’s not. He’s tearing them apart. Since he took office, the number of hate groups have increased by 30 percent, rising to a record high of 1,020 as of 2018, the Southern Poverty Law Center reports. With the rise of hate groups comes a rise of hate crimes, which are at an all-time 16-year-high, and which have only increased further under Trump, according to the FBI. Somehow, calling Mexicans “rapists” and neo-Nazis “very fine people” only further fans the flames of hate. Trump isn’t growing the economy. He’s not making America “great.” He’s done nothing to be considered a “good” president. So when I hear his supporters say that he’s a great president who deserves as a second term, I have to shrug my shoulders and ask, “Why?” QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Info@todayandtonight.com MARCH 2020 9

MARCH 2020

By Amy Sumerlin Photos By Chris Douglas Café Zuppina is not a large restaurant, and there are no neon signs to pull you in to its (also relatively small) plaza on S. Florida Avenue in Lakeland. If you’re not careful, you could drive right by it. But trust me, that’s not something you want to do. BERNA’S DREAM Berna Nar and her husband, Erkan, moved to the states from Turkey in 2004 – landing in Plant City – seeking expert medical care for health issues Berna was experiencing at the time. She began to feel better, and credits healthy eating for this. “Berna swears by healthy eating to eliminate medical problems,” said Blake Dossett, who is the Manager of The Market at Café Zuppina (more about that later). While in Plant City, the Nars owned a sandwich shop, the Sub Club, but once they moved to Lakeland in 2010, they looked to fulfill her dream of making Berna’s family recipes the centerpiece of the new restaurant. “What we serve is different than

In the Market you will find Turkish products including coffee, pastries, gelato, breads and spices.

what you would see in a typical Turkish restaurant,” Dossett began. “The items on our menu represent the “home cooking” of the region.” THE MENU Because of the name Zuppina (which happens to be one of about four Italian words I know), I expected to see a lot of soup on the menu. There was some soup on the menu – and Berna is known for her Red Lentil and Spring Chicken Soup ($3.95 for a cup and $4.95 for a bowl) – but the menu, unlike the size of the dining room, is definitely not small. The first thing I noticed about said menu was that everything was truly unique: You weren’t going to find typical appetizers (think onion rings or nachos) on The Starter lineup. Instead, you will have obviously healthier choices, including Hummus ($9), Zucchini Pate ($11), or Sautéed Vegetables ($9). My friend, Tiffany, and I decided upon the Eggplant Rolls ($11). Herb infused with a light, flaky roll, and deliciously broiled eggplant; we quickly gave it a thumbs up. Next, Tiffany was intrigued by the Strawberry Chocolate salad ($13) to which she added a side of Chicken ($6.95)– and I admit, when it came out, I felt a tinge of salad envy. Beautiful, obviously uber fresh spinach was topped with walnuts and equally fresh strawberries and the entire salad was lightly drizzled with a Chocolate Vinaigrette Dressing. She let me take a bite and it was refreshing and delightful. I decided to go for a heartier meal and chose the Romanian Style Brisket Platter (Berna’s mother was from Romania, so some of her recipes come from there), which runs $15. I cannot say enough good things about this meal, which is far different than American, barbecue style brisket. Oven baked, moist, shredded and served with mushrooms, it is a must try – even if you think you don’t like brisket. As the side, I asked for the Brussels sprouts, which came out EXPECT MORE... roasted perfectly. The servings, by the way, were huge. I noticed on the menu that there was a sharing fee of $4.95, and I can see why – if you have a smaller appetite, you may want to try this: The leftovers from my brisket – which was the lunch portion – was enough for an entire meal the next day. Next time I go, I would like to go for dinner and try the Mixed Grill Platter ($28), which features lamb chops, chicken, gyro meat, and lamb patties. And, by the way, I will try to share with someone… because next time, I must try the desserts next door. THE COFFEE SHOP, THE MARKET — AND DESSERT! Desserts next door? Yep. When Berna gave me the check -- yes, you’ll see the Chef delivering meals and checks – she told us we had to check out the desserts next door. Oh my. I was stuffed. “What do you have today?” I asked, even though I knew I would explode if I ate one more

thing. “Beril makes different pastries every day,” she said, obviously with pride. Beril is the Nars’ daughter, I now know, and she inherited the couples’ love for the culinary arts. In fact, Beril’s dream was to be trained by a French pastry chef in Europe. “As luck would have it,” Dossett continued, “the pastry chef happened to come here, and that is where she did her training.” Despite being full, we still walked over to the space that, prior to 2018, housed a consignment shop. “Berna had always felt limited before – not just by the small space – but by a regular menu,” Dossett began. “She is constantly inspired by memories of family meals and other culinary treats that you can find throughout her native Region.” THE MARKET And therefore, The Market was born (it opened in 2019). It’s not just a market, either; rather the charming space features a full-fledged coffee - Continued on page 20

Integration is a basic law of life; when we resist it, disintegration is the natural result, both inside and outside of us. Thus, we come to the concept of harmony through integration. — Norman Cousins Our culture does not ask about preserving the essence of pig; it just asks how we can grow them faster, fatter, bigger, and cheaper. We know that is not a noble goal. — Joel Salatin This was going to be my last chicken column. Sometime during the early morning hours of February 15, a predator got into the chicken coop and killed our hens, Emily and Savannah, leaving only our flock leader, Charlotte. It is hard to describe the helplessness you feel after a predator attack, especially when you try to equate these feelings with the reality that you enjoyed chicken tenders the night before. We often grapple with the morality of raising backyard chickens and hosting a barbeque only a few short yards from the coop. Emily and Savannah were full of personality and both of them offered a quirky chicken story. Emily was the broodiest of our flock and chose to sit on her nest for months despite our many measures to break the cycle. We tried everything from a chicken bath to a broody buster cage. She was formidable and resolute in her ability to hold true to nature. Savannah was our favorite hen and the most affectionate of the bunch. The word affectionate is a bit of a misnomer as she was the only the chicken that would tolerate being held. She was the smallest of the flock but fierce in defending herself from the pecking order. Groups of chickens function as

a flock because each bird takes on roles like members of a family or a team. This behavior is extremely complex and the social structure means everything to chickens. Bolder hens become flock leaders stepping up to be the protector in the absence a rooster. The head of the flock will often assign roles to the least dominant birds and will enforce her decision with violence in order to keep the pecking order established. Like humans, chickens require social exchange and without interaction, they become stressed leading to a shortened life span. Charlotte immediately began showing signs of stress and stopped eating and drinking. We contemplated sending her to rescue so she could rejoin a flock but the guilt was too much. Instead we went full “Mission: Integration” and searching for a bantam breeder to build a new flock. We also became the new owners of a deluxe but humane trap that has already snagged a few predators. This weekend, we came home with three new sisters, Charli, Carly and Caroline. This trio of silkies are smoky colored and the breed sports a comical puffball of feathers on the tops of their heads. Integration can be difficult for older birds; however, Charlotte has already taken the three new babies under her protective wings. The stress behavior has stopped and we are happy to announce we saved our old girl and opened our coop to a new generation. Be prepared for many more chicken chronicles to come. MUSIC OF CREAM 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR by James Coulter More than 50 years ago, three young British musicians— bassist Jack Bruce, guitarist Eric Clapton, and drummer Ginger Baker—banded together after enjoying successful solo careers to form Cream, one of the first rock super groups. Together, this rock trio created a musical legacy that not only earned them a place in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, but also influenced other musicians like them. “Cream was a chemical explosion like no other, the blueprint for every super group to follow and the heavy blues precursor to Hendrix, Zeppelin and so much more,” their website states. Now, nearly 50 years later, the descendants of these rock legends have come together to honor their loved one’s musical legacy through “The Music of Cream”, a 48-date North America tour paying tribute to the band and its landmark album, “Disraeli Gears.” Their tour will perform album in its entirety, including its biggest hits such as “Cocaine,” “Layla”, “Crossroads,” and “Wonderful Tonight.”

THE TOUR “The Music of Cream” started its tour with a tribute performance at the “Eric Clapton & Friends: A Tribute To Ginger Baker” event in London on Feb. 17. The band arrived

in the States with their opening act in Montana on Feb. 25. They have since been making their rounds to cities such as Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and San Diego. Their upcoming performance will be in Lakeland at the Youkey Theatre at the RP Funding Center on Thurs., March 26. Local fans of the classic British group will have a chance to hear their hit songs as recreated by their own family members. “With the recent passing of Ginger Baker, The Music of Cream looks forward to sharing Cream’s incomparable music with fans, new and old, to keep the trio’s legacy alive,” their press release states. “With primal riffs, soaring operatic choruses, poetry, fashion and theatre rolled into one, Disraeli Gears defined the era in which it was written.” Continuing the band’s legacy are family members of the original band members: drummer Kofi Baker, son of Ginger Baker, and guitarist and vocalist Will Johns, nephew of Eric Clapton and son of Led Zeppelin/Rolling Stones engineer Andy Johns. Both will be joined by Sean McNabb and Chris Shutters.

9. Interestingly enough, after his other band broke up, Johns decided to get a “proper job” at the aquarium in Brighton, later working within the charter fishing industry. Following an interview with the British Blues magazine, “Blues Matters”, Johns rekindled his love of music and re-started his musical career. He slowly began making a name for himself as a British blues player, traveling across Europe and Russia. Over the next few years, he would join many other musicians and tour across continents including Europe, Australia, and North America. Aside from his performances in his band, he released three solo albums: two of which, “Count On Me” and “Hooks In Line”, whose songs were nominated by the British Blues Awards. In his current tour, Johns hopes to honor the musical legacy of his Uncle, Eric Clapton, by performing their hit songs from their Billboard-topping album.

THE GUITARIST

Q&A WITH WILL Recently, Johns spoke with Today & Tonight Magazine to answer a few questions. Here are some of his answers:

Will Johns taught himself to play guitar at age 16. His love of music motivated him to attend Oxford and study performing arts. Soon he started spending less time with his college lessons and more with his first college band, Cloud

ning. I have always been into blues, punk, and soul—mostly blues. I was also influenced by Jimmy Hendrix a lot in the beginning and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Then I progressed and became big into B.B. King. I would say for the last ten years, B.B. King is my inspiration and he is the King of the Blues. So I think if there was anyone to take a tip from, then B.B.’s career has been so long and amazing. And he has gone through so many changes as well, his style and what he has been into, that there is such a gold mine of inspiration…for a blues players. He continues to be my daily inspiration. I am also really into Snoop Dog. In my shuffle list, it may go from “Every Day I Had The Blues” to something of Snoop’s.

to what we are doing. It is old music, but it means so much to people over here. So their reaction really does spur me on and makes me grow as a better musician who comes up with new and exciting stuff to impress an audience.

Q: Of the different venues you have performed at, which ones have been your favorite and why? I really, really enjoy playing some of the theaters over here in the state. They are so beautiful, and the sounds are amazing. I think it would be hard for me to pick out [just one]. But one of the most memorable would be the Paramount in New York. [Also] The Keswick Theatre. There are many, many more. I love to perform over here in the States because you all really appreciated the kind of music that I play, and that makes it fun for me.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your musical career? I love traveling. I love seeing different places and meeting new people. I say that the highlight of it all is making the audiences happy and hearing that applause and meeting them afterwards and hearing how much the music meant for them, and how it is the greatest gift: to be able to give so much and have it come back, that is just the greatest thing. “Music Of Cream” will be hosted on Mar. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Youkey Theater at the RP Funding Center, located at 701 W Lime St , Lakeland, FL 33815. For more information about the band and their tour, visit their website at: https://www.musicofcream.com, or their Facebook at: www.facebook.com/musicofcream

Q: What motivates you to continue what you do in you musical career? I think it is like an unstoppable train now. I couldn’t stop it if I tried. I think it is just hearing the crowd’s reactions

Q: If you could play as the opening act for any musician or band, who would you open for? Kofi and I were lucky to play with Eric Clapton. That was a huge honor and privilege of my professional career. As well, at the moment, I am into Gary Clark, Jr. I think he is great…I also love Snoop Dog. Don’t really know how that would fit, but [to] open up for Snoop or jam with him somehow would be an absolute dream come true. He is really cool.

TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

GIZMO

49 and Holding Exactly 11 months ago I wrote about turning 49 years old and on the road to becoming 50. It’s been almost a year. Ugh!! Really! That’s the ONE thing that seems to be true…years seem to fly by the older we get. Fast forward. So now the BIG 5-0 is just around the corner…7 1/2 weeks to be exact. So now I’m 49 and 11/12th years old… It seems that I’ve been talking about turning 50 for so long, now it’s really here, not that big of a deal. Right? Wrong! It’s a great milestone in my life or anyone’s life for that matter. Time to celebrate! Just like turning 21, 30, 40 and so on. Fifty and fabulous that’s what I’m focusing on. Some people seem a little surprised that I’m turning 50, thinking that I am much younger which is always nice to hear. I think that some people assume I’m younger than I am because I’m on the go so much; out attending events around the county and helping with charity events. Plus, I don’t have kids – just fur babies. I’ve never liked sun-baking. And I don’t smoke, toke or do drugs…except my ibuprofen. Gotta have the ibuprofen for the increasing aches and pains which do come from aging! I do love my Captain Morgan, though, but I hate that I drink Diet Coke with it – which is one of my unhealthier vices. But at least that’s the only time I drink Diet Coke is with my Captain! My diet’s not perfect – lately a little worse than usual and I need to get back on my work-out routine. Losing 10 pounds would make me feel and

look much better. But, all-in-all I’m ahead of the game. Turning 50. It’s a rite of passage, a new outlook or reflection on one’s life. What’s been accomplished? What’s new on the horizon? How to we celebrate? Turning 50. They say it’s the new 40. So, yes, we celebrate! As much or as little as we want. An intimate dinner with friends. A big blow-out bash. Quiet weekend with family. A “me” spa day for a much needed massage. Or a mini-vaca to a happening hot spot with your close peeps. Why not check “yes” to all of the above? Getting older can cause anxiety or depression for some, but it’s an undeniable fact. It’s much better than the alternative. Think about it…I’ve never been one that minded getting older. It’s just a number that I’ve always been proud to wear; like a badge of honor. We all age, but it’s how we age and about our journey in this game called Life. It’s not always perfect, it can be messy and we can always strive to make it better. We can’t play the woulda, coulda, shoulda games and need to focus on the next chapter, the part deux. What’s in my future? What’s my Part Deux? It’s an adventure not to be missed. Heading towards a Sexy 60. How about Sassy at 70? Yes, and yes! Today, I’m 49 and holding… holding open the door for 50 and beyond. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS Info@todayandtonight.com

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was American political scientist, economist, psychologist and professor Herbert Simon who made the following sage observation: “What information consumes is rather obvious: It consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention, and a need to allocate that attention efficiently among the overabundance of information sources that might consume it.” • Those who study such things claim that the act of licking a stamp burns one-tenth of a calorie. • The shortest song in the world is “You Suffer,” recorded in 1986 by the British band Napalm Death. It lasts precisely 1.316 seconds. • Stanley Mason was an inventor who really got around, in a manner of speaking. In addition to coming with the idea for the granola bar, he also created the squeezable ketchup bottle, the disposable diaper, heated pizza boxes and the dental floss dispenser. • There are more Polish people living in Chicago than in any city on Earth except for Warsaw, Poland’s capital. • You might be surprised to learn that the most dangerous profession in the country -- in terms of the percentage of people holding that profession who have been killed -- isn’t firefighter or police officer, it’s president of the United States. A total of 9% of our presidents have been assassinated.
