by James Coulter Alligators lounging around a pond within the Everglades. A tall tower looming over a sea of orange groves. A pirate ship landlocked within a pond and surrounded by carnival rides. These were some of the sights that tourists could see while driving along Highway 27 during it’s golden era between 1934 and 1971, between the opening of the highway and of Disney World respectively.

I want this to be as much as a visual road trip as if you are an early tourist coming down Highway 27 experiencing Florida for the first time - Megan Stepe, SFSC Museum Curator While many of these sights have since faded away, many of them have been memorialized into artwork currently on display within “Little Slices of Heaven Along Highway 27” at the Museum of Florida Art and Culture in Avon Park. The traveling exhibit contains several paintings, photographs, and memorabilia of attractions both man-made and natural that were most prominent during Florida’s Golden Era. Once such art piece, created by artist Joannah O’Donnell, showcases a former Kissimmee attraction, Xanadu: House of the Future, with a Florida panther in the background. The juxtaposition of the two Water Skier at Cypress Gardens subjects symbolize artifacts of Florida’s past, with one aspect of Florida that has gone extinct, and another that is currently going extinct, she explains. “I think the state re-invents itself on a regular basis, and we maybe don’t necessarily put that much stock SIGN UP FOR OUR NEW WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER AT WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

The exhibit will also incorporate multimedia displays including music and motion pictures to help instill visitors with a sense of Florida nostalgia. “I want this to be as much as a visual road trip as if you are an early tourist coming down Highway 27 experiencing Florida for the first time,” says Megan Stepe, SFSC Museum Curator. throughway for tourists. As such, many “tourist traps” were constructed to lure in such curious tourists, with landmark attractions such as Citrus Tower in Clermont, Gatorama in Palmdale, and Dinosaur Jungle in Sumterville. Unfortunately, the construction of interstates such as I-75 and I-4, and especially of larger Chalet Suzanne in Lake Wales attractions such as Disney World, saw a decline of tourists traveling along Highway 27, and with it, a decline of visitors to these old attractions, many of which have since closed. But while these places no longer exist, remnants of them still linger on, if not only within the memories of tourists and locals who once traversed Florida’s backbone. As a big fan of history with two degrees in art history, Stepe has been fascinated with old Florida and loves researching some of the highway’s former sights. state to places such as the Sebring Raceway and Chalet Suzanne in Lake Wales, though she wishes she could visit attractions that no longer exist like Mystery Garden. Her interest led her to create the exhibit showcasing artwork and memorabilia of many of these old places. During that time, she was approached by many people willing to loan their own artwork and even create artwork themselves. Cindy Rose, a nature photographer, will be showcasing some of her nature photos taken from Florida settings such as Highlands Hammock State Park. For the past 14 years, she has attained her photography skills to bring the natural world up close and personal without disturbing the surrounding wildlife. “These things stir my heart, and the photos that I have will inspire [other] people to explore them for themselves,” Rose says. As someone who lives near Highway 27, she is drawn to the surrounding landscape, having explored these areas in search of the best subjects for her photographs. She hopes this exhibit will likewise inspire others to do the same. “Once you get off the beaten paths, there are plenty of nooks and crannies for you to explore,” she says. Stepe also hopes visitors will walk away with a better appreciation of the state, not only of its golden past, but also of its modern attractions, all of which serve, as she puts it, as “a logical extension of the quirkiness that has always existed in Florida.” “I want people to be delighted by it,” she said. “Especially if they lived in Florida for a long time, I want them to relive old memories. I really want them Underwater Thanksgiving, Rainbow Springs to have fun with this exhibit.” “Little Slices of Heaven” runs at SFSC Museum of Florida Art and Culture (MOFAC) from May 16 to June 15. The opening reception will be hosted on May 17 at 1 p.m.

many years and wanted to bring the safari experience to Central Florida. Allison says Salisbury liked the idea of having safaris here so those who can’t afford to go to Africa can still experience what it would be like. “It’s an intimate experience,” Allison says. “It’s a small group and it is a nice night out in nature.” This is the second year for the Sunset Safari.

They were receiving calls about doing safaris later in the day, so they tried it and it was successful. The trips begin at 6:45 p.m. in June and July and 6:30 p.m. in August and reservations must be made in advance. Safari Wilderness Ranch, surrounded by Florida’s Green Swamp, also offers other fun experiences, such as daytime safaris, camel expeditions, kayak safaris and school field trips. did not have a staff of handlers on the ready to help him with any travel requests. That morning it was Cosby, a small cup of coffee and me. Unlike the recent courtroom reports, I found him to be genuine, charming and full of nutritional trivia. That morning, I too fell into his spell and was willing to push aside any nagging cognitive warnings for the chance to be near a mega celebrity. Fame is a powerful drug. As a television generation, we are quick to overlook pain and ultimately the bigger picture. As a woman who has been a sideline observer to the “Me Too” movement, I have done very little to process the true cost of such behavior. Cosby’s guilty judgment shows that maybe that tide is turning and “me too” can slowly turn into “me better.” Perhaps, that was the aim of the movement after all. hat could be better than listening to Fleetwood Mac’s Grammy award-winning album “Rumors”? How about listening to an authentic recreation of those songs almost as you were listening to the world-famous British rock band playing them live? Such “note-for-note, cut-for-cut” renditions of classic hits as “Don’t Stop” and “Go Your Own Way” will be presented during a “Classic Albums Live” performance at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland on May 20. At Classic Albums Live, you won’t be seeing anyone dressing in costumes or attempting impersonations, but you will hear them perform the greatest hits of the greatest musicians of all time, almost as if you were actually listening to those classic musicians in person. “Think of it as a recital,” says founder Craig Martin. “These albums are historic and stand the test of time.” Since 2003, Martin and his crew have been striving to “live the music we perform”, as he says on his website, performing the greatest albums and songs as authentically as anyone could without being the very musicians who first penned and performed those songs. Such a commitment to the classic hits require much more practicing than most other performances, as the musicians have to emulate every single note and even every sound effect to make their performance sound as authentic as the original, explains lead singer Nick

THE SWEET SPOT

“That nice little groove in life—and music. It’s right where we all want to end up.”

Nothing screams “tourist” more than feeding seagulls. Although I’m a transplant, I consider myself a professional beach bum after a decade of frequenting the Florida shore. Wind-blown hair, skin radiating the rays, licking the salt from your lips as the rhythmic sound of waves crashing lull you to a siesta, gulls serenading (while trying to pilfer your bag of Doritos), feet smoothed by the sand--the sticky odor of tanning lotion, Pub subs, listening to the radio, and drinking ice cold cervezas. We all have our tips, tricks, and hacks that make each coastal adventure our own unique experience. The one constant is the serenity saltwater therapy brings while at our favorite aquatic chill spot. For Brothers Osborne, theirs is just to the north in Port Saint Joe on the Florida Panhandle. It’s where they cut their second full-length release Port Saint Joe, which shares the namesake of the small coastal community. Foregoing the traditional Nashville studio setting, they recorded at the beach. “We shacked up for two weeks to make an unabashed record that would reflect who we are in every way, and in the process, we had the most enjoyable and memorable recording experience of our lives,” says TJ Osborne. The end result is nothing short of one of the best musical journeys so far this year. Thematically and schematically, we’re talking dynamic duality. Enigmatically but not sporadically, Brothers Osborne are simply complicated; if you pick up what I’m putting down. Those last sentiments were meant to leave you scratching your head, just like Brothers Osborne’s classification within the country spectrum. Are they rocking rebels, classic crooners, laid-back beach bums, or all the above? Despite winning ACM and CMA awards for vocal duo of the year, most casual listeners know very little about John and TJ Osborne. Originally from Maryland, they cut their teeth touring with Eric Church and Chris Stapleton. Elder brother John sports the beard and lays down sick guitar riffs. TJ takes care of lead vocals and social activism. “Port Saint Joe is a sonic representation of who we’ve become not only as a band but as people,” adds John. Now the question remains, will this project translate into commercial and radio success beyond merely being lauded and praised by critics and

COCO

Brothers Osborne industry insiders? There are only ten tracks, but there are no throw away songs. Every track leads in to the next and its laid out to be listened to sequentially. Go ahead and leave shuffle play off. “Slow Your Roll” sets the tone, a needed reminder for relaxation. The first single released to radio, “Shoot Me Straight” picks up where their first album Pawn Shop left off with its breakout hit “It Ain’t My Fault”. But don’t be deceived, Port Saint Joe offers much more laid-back depth than is indicative of the most rapid track on the album. “Tequila Again” begins like a cool ocean breeze and goes down as smooth as quality agave nectar. I may or may not have had a sip or two during the penning of this review. “A Couple Wrongs Makin’ It Alright” is a groovin’, funkadelic 70’s jam to toss a Frisbee to. “A Little Bit of Trouble” puts the vibe out and captures a jazzy chance encounter through a kaleidoscope of rose-colored glasses after the witching hour. “Pushing Up Daisies” with lyrics like “we ain’t getting out of this love alive”, how can you resist? This one is on repeat. It’s difficult to pick a favorite, but mine is “I Don’t Remember Me (Before You). Songs about mature love changing a man are near and dear to me for many reasons.
