Looking for a new book to read? Searching for the next Great American Novel? Seeking a niche story written by an indie author rather than a big-name corporate publisher? Then visit the inaugural Writer’s Block Party and Street Fair being hosted on Sat. May 20 in Bartow.
Several dozen local authors will be gathering in Downtown Bartow to distribute their books and discuss their work. Whether you’re interested in crime thrillers, high fantasy, Disney history, or even bigfoot and aliens, there’s a writer who has written something that’ll pique your interest.
Participating authors include J.C. Alexandre (author of the Light Prince fantasy series), A.B. Kayge (author of the mystery crime thriller, The Dicer),
Rob Robertson (paranormal expert and author of Legend Tripping), William Hatfield (murder mystery author), and Lloyd Harris (local historian).
Several other activities will be hosted throughout the day, including a Jane Austen Society panel and tea party, a literary character costume contest for both people and their pets, children’s arts and crafts, and even raffle prizes.
Furthermore, participating authors will be invited to partake in a “story line”, where they will be able to contribute a paragraph to a collectively-written story that will be published for posterity.
“We will go to each author and provide a paragraph for a story. Each one will contribute until the story is finished. So each of them will put together a story for us and we will have it published for the Writers Block
Party,” explained Lori Serdynski, event organizer and founder. The best part is that, not only is the event free to attend, but also pet-friendly. So both people and their four-legged friends will be invited to attend and participate in various activities throughout the day.
Sponsors for the event include Richard & Cheryl Dreyer, Meeks Real Estate, Sackett Properties, and Bartow Community Service Center. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Bartow Community Center, formerly the Bartow Church Service Center. The facility received heavy damage from wind and rain, so proceeds will help fund repairs.
“The main reason why I chose Bartow Service Center is because I am good friends with Rusty Music (the director of the Bartow Community Service Center),” Lori explained. “I love his
vision and outlook for the community. The way they reach out and help others, I wanted to help them...The main goal is to make money for them, to make sure that they will have payback. So, when I collect vendor and sponsor money, once the expenses are paid for, then the Bartow Community Service Center will get the remainder donation from Bartow Con, LLC.”
Lori and her husband, Sean, have 18 years of experience hosting weddings, private parties, and small events. Sean has been in the convention business for 25 years. His greatest accomplishment has been SyFy Bartow, the annual outdoor scifi convention hosted annually in Downtown Bartow for 10 years.
After working many years alongside her husband, Lori decided to start her own organization, Bartow Con, LLC. Her organization specializes in events to
help raise funds and awareness for local causes. The Writer's Block Party will help benefit the Bartow Community Center.
“I put this together to do mostly benefits and fundraising events for other people, not only if they are struggling, but to bring awareness to their business and what they have to offer, with proceeds donated back from the vendors and sponsors,” she said.
Whether it’s the annual SyFy Bartow or the upcoming inaugural Writers Block Party, Lori and Sean specialize in hosting great events with excellent presentations and layouts alluring to both vendors and sponsors alike. When everyone has a good time, they have good reason to return year after year, she explained.
“Our goal at Bartow Con, LLC is not to make a million dollars, but to make a million people happy,” she said. “That is my main goal and focus to make sure everything is taken care of, that they are not only making money, but having a pleasurable experience, and to come and
see what we have going on. We like to keep it busy and keep the activities flowing through the entire day.”
The Writer's Block Party and Street Fair will be hosted on Sat. May 20 along Sumerlin Street in Downtown Bartow. The event is free to attend and pet-friendly. For more information, visit their website at: https://bartowcon. com/

The Polk Museum of Art is thrilled to announce its 51st annual Citizens Bank & Trust Mayfaire by-the-Lake festival, to be held along the shores of Lake Morton May 13 and 14, 2023, from 9 am to 4 pm. Showcasing over 150 artists from nine states working in a variety of media, from painting and sculpture to woodworking, hand-crafted jewelry, and more, this free two-day fine art festival promises to have something for every art enthusiast and visitor to enjoy.
In addition to the artists’ booths, this year’s celebration will include a robust daily event schedule, including fun activities for everyone of every age. “Kids Collect,” a kids-only tent where children can purchase artwork donated by Mayfaire artists at nominal prices, returns to the Ruthven’s Mayfaire Kids Zone to engage even the youngest of art connoisseurs. Free hands-on art activities for children of all abilities will also be available at each Kids Zone tent.
“Thanks to our community of art lovers, our loyal sponsors and local partners, and all the talented showcasing artists from near

Performances by FrediDANCE Project, Samira Belly Dance, and Musical Hammers, among others, will also be held throughout the weekend on the Lakeland Public Library lawn. Concessions will be available for purchase from Jimmy’s Famous Seafood, Chicks Coop, Heavenly Pretzel, and more. At the Museum, visitors will be able to re-experience festivals of yore with “A Blast from the Past: Festival Favorites from the Permanent Collection” on display in the Murray/Ledger Gallery, highlighting past festival winners.

Fantasy vs. Reality
“When I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” ― C.S. Lewis
There’s a scene in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series where Death and his grand-daughter, Susan, discuss the purpose of fantasy.
“You’re saying humans need fantasies to make life bearable?” Susan asks.
“No.” Death replies. “Humans need fantasy to be human, to be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape.”
“Tooth fairies? Hogfathers?” Susan asks.
“Yes.” Death replies. “As practice, you have to start out learning to believe the little lies.”
“So, we can believe the big ones.” Susan said.
“Yes.” Death replies. “Justice. Mercy. Duty. That sort of thing.”
“They’re not the same at all.” Susan said.
me to read other stories like A Wrinkle in Time, Chronicles of Narnia, and, of course, Lord of the Rings
Some people don’t like fantasy. They say they can’t get into it because nothing is real. Why read about something that isn’t real? I’m the exact opposite. I love fantasy because none of it is real. I love escaping into magical fantasy worlds and exploring and experiencing things I can’t find in reality. Why bother reading about the real world? I already live in it!
As a kid, I always assumed the most unbelievable aspects of fantasy were the things assumed to be make-believe: magic, fairies, dragons. Now that I’m an adult, I’m starting to believe that the most fantastical elements are the things assumed to be “real.” As Death said: justice, mercy, duty.
1. MOVIES: Which movie gave actor Tom Hanks his first Oscar?
2. SCIENCE: Apollo astronauts reported that the Moon smelled like what substance?
3. GEOGRAPHY: How many stars are on the Australian flag?
4. U.S. PRESIDENTS: Which president killed a man who insulted him in a duel?
5. MUSIC: Which pop group produced the hit song “God Only Knows”?
6. TELEVISION: “The Brady Bunch” features how many blended family members?
7. LANGUAGE: What is the offi-
cial language of the United States?
8. U.S. STATES: What is the state capital of Rhode Island?
9. ASTRONOMY: Which is the only planet in our solar system that is not named after a god or goddess?
10. FOOD & DRINK: What is a cheese connoisseur called?
“You think so?” Death asks. “Then take the universe and grind it down to the finest powder and sieve it through the finest sieve and then show me one atom of justice, one molecule of mercy. And yet you try to act as if there is some ideal order in the world, as if there is some— some rightness in the universe by which it may be judged.”
“Yes.” Susan said. “But people have got to believe that, or what’s the point?”
“My point exactly.” Death replies. “You need to believe in things that aren’t true. How else can they become?”
***
Ever since I was young, I had a love for fantasy. It started with fairy tales and Disney films, of course. And as I grew older, I watched the classics: Neverending Story, Last Unicorn, Dark Crystal. By high school, I was playing video games like Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy. And, of course, who could forget the Harry Potter series? Those books inspired
In the end, what seems more unreal: Harry Potter flying on a broom to catch a golden flying ball? Or him and his ragtag group of friends defeating the evil wizard Voldemort? Is it Middle Earth with its elves, dwarves, and hobbits? Or is it one small person like Frodo taking down an evil tyrant like Sauron through a small, simple act?
In fantasy, men are brave and honorable, and women are kind and virtuous. Leaders serve the common good. And if a leader is bad, they are defeated and replaced with a good one. Good and evil are easy to tell apart. And when evil arises, good people will band together to defeat it. Because good always triumphs over evil.
Sadly, none of that is true for the real world. Turns out justice and mercy are as “real” as fairies and dragons. They don’t exist. But that is why I read fantasy. Because I want to live in a world where they do. We need fantasy to dream of a better reality.

MUGHAL-E-AZAM
INDIA’S BIGGEST AND MOST SPECTACULAR MUSICAL PLAY EVER
Special to T&T Magazine
After more than 200 spellbinding performances across six Asian countries, India's most spectacular musical play now premieres in North America. Mughal-e-Azam, produced by Shapoorji Pallonji Group and directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, is based on K Asif’s 1960 classic film of the same name –showcasing India’s rich culture of Kathak dances and classical music intertwined in a legendary love story. Presented in North America by Cinema on Stage this summer, the 13-city tour will be making a stop at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland, Fla. Friday, June 16 through Sunday, June 18.
Tickets are on sale now! Tickets prices range from $121.89 to $454.89. Purchase your tickets by visiting www.rpfundingcenter.com. Dates and ticket prices are subject to change without notice.
For more than 60 years, the story of Mughal-e-Azam continues to enchant legions of fans across the globe. India’s most expensive theatre production comprises mesmerizing dance sequences, spectacular lighting, extravagant costumes, and live signing. To date, it has performed in Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Muscat, Doha, and soon, North America.
India’s first Broadway-style musical, with a cast and crew of more than 150 people, has been met with all-around accolades follow-
ing its 2016 premiere in Mumbai. In 2017, it won seven out of the 14 BroadwayWorld India Awards, including Best Play, Best Director, Best Costume Design, Best Choreography, Best Original Set Design, Best Original Lighting Design and Best Ensemble Cast.
Mughal-e-Azam centers on the love story between Prince Salim and court dancer Anarkali. Upon learning of this forbidden relationship, Emperor Akbar vehemently disapproves and must choose between his responsibility towards his empire and his duty as father of a beloved son. The play is in Hindi/Urdu or Hindustani, with LED screens displaying English subtitles.

WINSTON
Meet Winston! A 3 year old tan and white male Hound mix. Winston came to us as a transfer from animal control. Since being with us, we have learned that patience is truly a virtue when it comes to Winston. When meeting new people Winston is cautious & very talkative. He has done well with both small & large dogs, however, he is picky with whom he befriends.
CASSIE
Cassie is our hyper 11 month old Husky Lab mix. She is a super playful girl. Cassie can be shy when it comes to meeting new people but she warms up quickly and shows her true rambunctious self. This beautiful girl loves to play fetch with just about any toy you give her. Cassie loves to run! When she gets done with her zoomies, she will dive into the grass and roll and spin.
ATHENA
My name is Athena and I am a 4 year old female domestic short hair mix. I do well with almost everyone, including men, women, children but I need a little time to get familiar. I need to be the only animal in the house. I love my crate with my litter box inside, to sleep at night. I am very affectionate, on my own terms. Please don't pick me up though.

• To keep kids from running into a closed sliding-glass door, cut out a small picture of something that’s brightly colored, “laminate” it by taping it across both sides, then tape it to the door at children’s eye level. -- E.R. in New York
• Painting season is in full swing at my house, and here are my two favorite painting tips: One is to lightly soap the windows (glass only) and let it dry. Any paint
• Here’s a great spring facial: Split an avocado, mash half of it and use it as a mask. Let sit for up to five minutes, then rinse away with warm water.
• Cleaning windows? Use a nylon net scrubbie from the kitchen to get rid of bugs from screens. It also works really well to scrub bugs off the car grille or car window.
• Here’s a great tip you can use when parallel parking in front of a storefront. Check the reflection to see if it looks like there’s room when backing in or pulling forward. -- O.W. in California
