Winter Haven, Florida, boasts a vibrant music scene with talents spanning rock, country, jazz, blues, pop, and classical genres. Among these local gems are guitarists David Brimer and Marcus Brixa, who have been fixtures of Polk County’s music community for decades. With over 40 years of combined experience, these seasoned veterans have gotten together and are making some noise.
Brimer and Brixa’s debut album “Clay Pigeons” dropped last November and is available on all streaming platforms. On May 24th, they released their first live album--“Recorded Live at The
Local Guitar Duo Debut New Album “Clay Pigeons”
Ghost Light Lounge,” and are currently crafting their second studio album, slated for release this fall. Their next live concert event will be held at Gram Parsons Derry Down with special guest guitarist Joe Gavin on June 8th.
Marcus Brixa, originally from Hamilton, Ontario, has been a central Florida staple since 1988. With a degree in Music
Education and Classical Guitar Performance, Marcus’s repertoire spans classical, jazz, rock, and blues. Influenced by greats like Pepe Romero, Bill Frisell, and even Eddie Van Halen he has performed extensively, from local theaters to touring acts.
Marcus cofounded the local band KeySoundSoul, performs as a solo or duo, and has been the go-to
guitar instructor at Carlton Music Center for 30 years.
David Brimer, a Lakeland native, started his guitar journey in his teens and honed his skills at the Musician’s Institute in California. Drawing inspiration from players like Jeff Beck, Robert Fripp, and Al Di Meola, David regularly performs solo or in the duo Black Satin with his wife,
Laura. He has released several albums in a variety of genres, has performed all over the country, and works as a studio guitarist and music producer. David also teaches guitar at Carlton Music Center's Winter Haven location.
Winter Haven’s music scene thrives thanks in part to musicians like David Brimer and Marcus Brixa. Keep an ear out for their upcoming releases and live shows!
Tell us how the Brimer & Brixa duo was formed.
Marcus: David and I got together in March of 2023 and started talking about how much we liked acoustic jazz. One of my favorite duos is Tony Rice and John Carlini. David also loved that style, so we decided to try playing some songs together. We did a tune at The Guitar Parlor show and really hit it off. Almost immediately, we started working on songs that would become the “Clay Pigeons” album.
How would you describe what you do?
David: It is unclassifiable. Is it jazz? Yes. Is it folk? Yes. Is it classical? Yes. Marcus and I strive to compose beyond anything we
have previously done, paying little attention to genre limitations. What’s important is the sonic and emotional resonance. Does it make us feel good? Then it’s a winner.
What is your method for composing music?
Marcus: On “Clay Pigeons,” we had a few songs individually that we each brought to the table and refined, but we also wrote several songs together as a true collaboration. We typically come up with ideas on our own and then get together in my teaching studio and work on the material. Each song has defined melodies and chord progressions that we work out, but we also leave a lot of room for improvisation.
David: I typically come up with a clever chord progression and bring that to Marcus, then we woodshed it for a while, composing melodies and the like. What is most important to me is creating beautiful harmonic passages and challenging progressions to improvise over top of.
- Continued On Page 6
How did the album “Clay Pigeons” come about?
Marcus: Originally, we were not sure if we were going to do a shorter thing, like maybe an EP, but things moved very quickly during the writing process and we realized we had enough material for an album. We recorded it with our good friend, Josh Miller at his studio over 3 sessions.
David: I have been pushing Marcus to record his own compositions for a long time. It’s part of why we ended up coming together as a duo. Once we had written “Clay Pigeons,” I knew an album would have to follow. We produced it relatively slowly over the course of 2023, and I’m very proud of the results.
How did the live album come about?
Marcus: The live album is very cool in that it is a recording of our first official concert together. We did it in The GhostLight Lounge in September of 2023.
David: Who doesn’t love a live album?
Can you tell us more about the Guitar Parlor?
Marcus: I created The Guitar Parlor about two years ago. I love how many open mic nights we have in our community, but I was trying to find a place where I could have a dedicated quiet listening room for solo instrumental musicians. Classical players, acoustic jazz players, stuff like that. I schedule 4 concerts a year, and they are free. We hold them in The GhostLight Lounge at Theatre Winter Haven. Every concert is different, and we are getting a good following. If you look up The Guitar Parlor on Facebook, you’ll find out when we are host-
ing the concerts. The next one will be Tuesday, July 16th.
What’s next for Brimer & Brixa?
Marcus: Right now we are getting ourselves ready for a concert at Gram Parsons Derry Down. It is going to be Saturday, June 8th, and will feature our friend Joe Gavin playing his amazing solo acoustic stuff, and then David and I will perform a full concert. Tickets are available at the Gram Parsons Derry Down
website.
David: We are deep into recording our second studio album at Omnipop Recordings with Josh Miller. The material on the second album is a giant step forward in composition and a large expansion upon the ethos we captured with those two vintage Martin guitars on “Clay Pigeons.”

Nine Years of Pride and Counting
by James CoulterPut on a rainbow wig and face paint. Pin a button with your preferred pronouns. And proudly fly your pride flags. Because LGBT Pride Month is upon us and Polk Pride is celebrating nine years and counting.
From Sat. June 8 to Sat. June 15, Polk Pride and other local LGBTQ organizations are hosting a whole week of live music, games, and other fun activities for folks in the LGBTQ community and their allies.
Polk Pride kicks off with a Kick-Off Brunch at Union Hall in Lakeland on Sat. June 8 at 11 AM. What follows is a week of fun events ranging from an after dark party, interfaith worship service, and a youth party.
The weeklong celebration culminates with the big event on Sat. June 15: Pride in the Park at Munn Park. This annual event draws in thousands of attendees to Downtown Lakeland with nearly 100 ven-
dors, food trucks, and a full roster of live music and entertainment.
“We are excited for the 9th year of Polk Pride and look forward to celebrating with a week-long event lineup including our largest event, Polk Pride in the Park - the must-do event for the entire family.” said Scott Guira, President of Polk Pride. “Polk Pride welcomes the entire community to join in celebrating inclusion for every member of the community.”
A Legacy of Love and Acceptance
Polk Pride Week started nine years ago. Hosted in LGBTQ Pride Month in June, this annual celebration is a collaboration of various local organizations, including the Lakeland Youth Alliance (LYA), a support group for local LGBTQ youth, and PFLAG of Polk County, a group for parents, family, friends, and allies to get support regarding LGBTQ questions and needs.
“Polk Pride creates an inspiring and
dedicated culture of support and aspires to be the premier platform for education and entertainment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, as well as their friends, families and allies in Central Florida,” their press release states.
Kerri McCoy, Vice President of Polk Pride, remembers standing on the stage during the inaugural event nine years ago. She could not have imagined back then that a small event that barely drew in a meager crowd of nearly 100 attendees would grow to attract thousands of participants annually.
“I never thought we would see this grow as big as it has,” McCoy said. “I remember the first year we were on the stage, wondering how many people would come out, if anyone would come out. We had a low number of attendance--maybe a couple hundred, if that. It has just grown exponentially over the years. The outpouring of support has been wonderful from the community. It is amazing to see we have done this and made it grow. It is exciting.”
Since its inception, Polk Pride Week has grown exponentially with more attendees, sponsors, vendors, and activities. McCoy owes its success to the hard work and dedication of their volunteers, all of whom give their free time making sure an event like this runs like clockwork.
“I owe the success to the hard work of our board,” she said. “Our board is all volunteers. No one is paid. They all have a full-time job. And they give their spare time what little we all have between jobs and life. They all volunteer, and they are the most wonderful people and hard workers to make all this happen.”
LGBT Youth & Their Challenges
More and more young people are feeling comfortable with their identities and are “coming out of the closet.” Nearly 30 percent of young adults in America (ages 18 to 25) identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer, according to a report by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI). These numbers far exceed the number of people in older generations who identify similarly.
However, while the number of LGBTQidentifying individuals continues to grow, so, too, do their problems. Many people, especially young people, in the LGBTQ community, still face prejudice and discrimination, which, in turn takes a toll on their mental health.
Between 30 to 60 percent of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender people deal with anxiety and depression at rates 1.5 to 2.5 times higher than that of other people, according to statistics from the Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA). 56 percent of LGBT youth have claimed they wanted mental health care but couldn’t receive it, while 41 percent have contemplated suicide.
With more young people identifying as LGBTQ, and with so many becoming susceptible to mental health issues and suicidal thoughts, young people need a “safe space” where they can feel comfortable and accepted in their budding identities, and where they can receive care and attention for their emotional and mental health needs.
The Lakeland Youth Alliance (LYA) provides such a safe environment for local LGBTQ youth. LYA is a charter of The Orlando Youth Alliance, which has been facilitating the need of young people since 1990.
LYA offers a weekly peer-to-peer mutual support group for LGBTQ youth and their straight allies. Its purpose, according to its website, is, “to find a safe place for these kids to gather and be among their peers so they may fully understand their uniqueness and participate as a diverse member of this community.”
“Numerous professionals have spoken to our youth about their careers and the options that await them,” their website states. “Developing this nucleus of friends is the key to never feeling alone. Since LGBTQ youth are five times more likely to commit suicide than their heterosexual classmates, it is vital that we provide the services of OYA to our area youth.”
Challenges for the Future
The past decade has seen a growing acceptance of the LGBTQ community. A supermajority of 91 percent of Americans feel that LGBTQ-identifying people should be free to live their lives, with 84 percent supporting equal rights for the LGBTQ community, according to statistics from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
However, despite this growing level of acceptance, a political backlash against LGBTQ rights has also grown, especially towards individuals who identify as transgender. Many states have passed laws restricting access to bathrooms, sex educa-
tion in public schools, and hormone therapy and other forms of medical care.
Here in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis has made the restriction of transgender medical care, support, and education a pivotal component of his political platform. His most infamous and controversial law, informally known as “Don’t Say Gay”, prevents educators in public schools from discussing topics concerning sexual orientation or gender identity.
Other controversial anti-LGBT measures implemented in Florida includes laws that penalize medical providers who offer gender-affirming care, criminalizes transgender people for using the restroom that matches their gender identity, removes majors and minors in gender studies from universities, and permits healthcare providers and insurers to discriminate against LGBTQ patients.
However, despite these legal and societal challenges, Polk Pride remains committed to providing a community event for residents to express their gender and sexual identities in a safe environment.
The organization works tirelessly with the City of Lakeland and the Lakeland Police Department to ensure attendees can celebrate safely, and they have nothing but high hopes for the future moving forward.
“This event is important because it lets people celebrate who they are and also let people know that there are people in this community who accept them for who they are and that they are loved,” McCoy said.
“I think one way we overcome challenges is to keep striving and going. We do not let anyone stop us. all the negativity and all the things going on in our state, we just keep pushing. We keep going.”

God (Doesn't) Hate Gays!
It’s LGBTQ Pride Month! Which means it’s that time of year when, aside from the LGBTQ community simply wishing to celebrate their identities and lifestyles in peace, homophobic “Christians” try to argue that homosexuality is a sin against God. But is that true? Is homosexuality actually condemned in the Bible? Is being homosexual really an “abomination”?
Many “Christians” certainly think so. And they have plenty of “clobber verses” to beat gay people over the head with. The most infamous are Lev. 20:13 and Lev. 18:22, both of which allegedly call homosexuality an “abomination.”
However, many Bible scholars believe these verses are less about consensual sexual relations and more about incest. Queer Bible Hermeneutics, a blog run by Southern Methodist University, argues that “the so-called homosexual law appears within a list referring to incest.” As such, “Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 continue the theme of incestuous relationships.”
Because of their variant meanings, theologians and Bible scholars debate whether these words are used in these verses as a condemnation of homosexuality, male prostitution, male-on-male sexual assault, or pedastry (pedophilia towards young boys).
As an article in The Guardian explains: “While people could take it to mean man bedding man, within the context of the time, scholars believed that arsenokoitai alluded more to abusive, predatory behavior and pederasty than it does homosexuality.”
In fact, in Martin Luther’s translation of the German Bible from 1534 (more than 300 years before the term homosexuality existed), the words malakoi and arsenokoitai were translated to knabenschander, which roughly translates to English as “boy molester.” (In other words, God is more bothered by priests molesting altar boys than gay men having consensual sex!)
But all of these commonly mistranslated and misinterpreted verses aside, the big question must be asked: “What Would Jesus Do?”
1. TELEVISION: What subject does Walter White teach at the beginning of “Breaking Bad”?
2. GEOGRAPHY: Which three countries make up the Baltic states in Europe?
3. MUSIC: What is the title of The Beatles’ first album?
4. LITERATURE: Prince Edward Island is the inspiration for which novel series?
5. HISTORY: Which Roman emperor built a wall across northern England to deter invaders?
6. MOVIES: Which movie first featured the character Lisbeth Salander?
7. ASTRONOMY: The asteroid belt
lies between which two planets in our solar system?
8. U.S. STATES: Which state’s coast was dubbed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” because so many ships wrecked there?
9. FOOD & DRINK: What does the term “a la carte” mean?
10. SCIENCE: What is the process called when a gas changes into a liquid?
In other words, both verses, which are often read as condemning homosexuality, are, in their proper context, better read as: “Sexual intercourse with a close male relative should be just as abominable to you as incestuous relationships with female relatives.”
Another common “clobber verse” is 1 Cor. 6:9, which allegedly lists “homosexuals” with other “unrighteous” sinners like “adulterers” and “idolaters” who will not “inherit the kingdom of God.” (KJV) Specifically, the actual word in the verse is often translated into English as either “effeminate” (KJV) or more explicitly as “men who have sex with men” (NIV) or “men who practice homosexuality.” (ESV)
However, many Bible scholars argue this verse has been mistranslated from the original Greek in order to justify homophobia. Specifically, the two Greek terms used in verses like this are malakoi, which translates to “soft” or “effeminate” (but can also mean “lazy” or cowardly”), and arsenokoitai, a compound word that roughly translates to “male bed.”
Nowhere in the Gospels does Jesus mention homosexuality. However, he did discuss how we are to treat other people. In fact, his two biggest commandments are to “love God” and to “love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:30-31, KJV)
Jesus was less concerned about what people did and more about how they treated others. He told us to treat others the way we want to be treated (Matt. 7:12) and that we should “judge not, lest ye be judged.” (Matt. 7:1, KJV)
The remainder of the New Testament details how Christians “are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:28, KJV) and how they “should not call any man common or unclean.” (Acts 10:28, KJV) Therefore, we should love one another and treat each other with the respect with which we wish to be treated.
So, what would Jesus do? Certainly not hate LGBTQ folks!

• Recycling notes: Cardboard that’s greasy or food-caked is just not recyclable. It’s trash. On the plus side, your glass jars don’t have to be perfectly clean, nor your cans crushed, in order to take them to the recycling center or drop curbside if your community has a plan in place.

not to soak. Secure in a delicates bag or tie inside a pillowcase, then put in a dryer at low heat until completely dry. Adding a fabric softener sheet for the final five minutes is nice, too.” -D.W. in Oklahoma
• Wonderful tip from Fibrenew, a leather, vinyl and plastics refurbishing specialist, on what to do if you get ink on your leather car seats: “DON’T use dish soap or hair spray to remove the marks. The degreasing agents in dish soap can permanently degloss and damage the top coating on the leather surface. Hair spray, another commonly recommended remedy, has alcohol in it and will ruin the surface coating on your leather.” Use a special leather-cleaning kit instead, or contact a local professional to fix it for you.
• “Remove tea stains from your teapot with a few drops of bleach added to a pot of hot water. Let sit for five or so minutes, then swish with a brush. Most tea stains will come right out. Be sure to rinse well.” -- A.A. in Florida
