Silly Sock Saturdays Hosts a 1950s-style Sock Hop

by James Coulter

Four years ago, Zachary Kirkland was assigned a project by his eighth-grade critical thinking and research teacher. He was to think of a way to impact his local community by addressing a need within it. At that time, Zak had many friends in the hospital. He remembered how they were bored with nothing to do. He decided he would help them and other children by providing them with toys and other small gifts. “Because it is an extremely hard time when children are in the hospital, [I wanted] to make an impact and to make a better experience for them,” Zak said. Zak, with the help of family and friends, collected donations and gathered them into small gift bags that he then distributed to young 6 JULY 2021

patients at Lakeland Regional Hospital. His first trip had him deliver up to 30 bags. All of his research, hard work, and time spent on his class project earned him an A+. What started as a class assignment has since evolved into Silly Sock Saturdays, a non-profit organization that has received both local and national acclaim. The name was inspired by the “silly” blue socks that his friends received during their initial hospital stay. Since then, Silly Sock Saturdays has continued collecting donations, raising funds, and making deliveries. Their gift bags consist of silly-designed socks, along with coloring books, crayons, card games, puzzles, crafts, and other comfort items. They request donations of small toys, specifically non-gender or age-specific toys. They do not accept stuffed animals or religious-affiliated items.

Every month, Zak and his volunteers visit Lakeland Regional Hospital to deliver their gift bags to the young patients. There is nothing Zak loves more than receiving feedback from the hospital staff and families of the patients and about how much his donations helped them through their stay. One Facebook reviewer tells how their threeyear-old son better enjoyed their stay because of the gifts given to him: “When he woke up the first thing he saw was the Bag with Silly Socks on it that was left for him! It was filled perfectly with all of his favorite things. Those toys kept him distracted and excited for the next 4 days while we were there.” To help fund his organization and collect donations, Zak often hosts several events through the year. His main event has been a bowling fundraiser at Cypress Lanes in Winter

Haven, which was inspired by his love of bowling. This year’s main event will be a 1950s-style sock hop. The fundraiser will serve root beer floats and barbecue catered by Sonny’s BBQ, and it will provide other games and activities including a photo booth, raffle prizes, and music performed by a DJ. Attendees will be encouraged to dress in 1950s attire. When Silly Socks started, they delivered 30 bags per month; now, they deliver up to at least 60 bags, Zak said. Their organization’s growth especially prove useful following the expansion of the hospital with its Women’s and Children Health Building. “Starting in eighth grade, it seems so small, the impact that you make, but being able to read the reviews and different feedback from the families who are given the bags, and being able to know how much the one bag was able to impact their stay and change their outlook and be able to bring that joy and positivity to their hard time...it has allowed me to continue going forward and be able to keep that drive going,” Zak said. Silly Socks Saturdays has been recognized locally and nationally. Several years ago, Zak received the Disney Be Inspired Award, which was partly conferred due to his visits to elementary schools speaking to students. Recently, he received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which was provided through AmeriCorps and Points of Light. His award recognized the volunteer work that he accomplished through his high school years, especially through Silly Sock Saturdays. Zak owes his support to his school and friends. Through his research, he was able to figure out how to turn his class project EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

into a non-profit organization. And, of course, he wouldn’t be where he is today without the assistance and support of his family, friends, volunteers, and community. “At the end of the day, it is not about me,” Zak said. “It is about making a positive impact on the kids who are receiving [the gift bags] and getting that feedback, which is what enables me to know what I am doing is great.” His mother, Dianne Forcier, who is also a Director of the Board of his non-profit, has helped and supported Zak from the very start. She is more than proud as a mother could be for what he has accomplished with what started as a class assignment. “It is pretty exciting,” Dianne said. “I am very happy and proud of what he has done, and that he has been able to continue and persevere through, not only being busy with school, but through COVID-19, to maintain and be able to continue what he started.” Zak recently graduated from Bok Academy in Lake Wales. He is set to start his first year of college. Even then, he still plans to continue running Silly Sock Saturdays with the help of his board members and making deliveries to the hospital. “Knowing Zachary, it would not surprise me if while he is at college, he finds another way to give back or start something new even,” Dianne said. Silly Sock Saturdays’ Sock Hop will be hosted on Sat., July 24 from 5 PM to 8 PM at Venue 650, located at 650 6th St SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880. Tickets are on sale for $10. JEFF FOXWORTHY The Good Old Days Tour

Comedy icon, multiple Grammy Award nominee, and bestselling author Jeff Foxworthy is going to take us back to “The Good Old Days” in a laughter-packed evening featuring all new material at the RP Funding Center on Saturday, September 29th at 7 pm. Jeff Foxworthy is one of the most respected and successful comedians in the country. Widely known for his “you know you’re a redneck” jokes, his act goes well beyond that to explore the humor in everyday family interactions and human nature, a style that has been compared to Mark Twain’s. He has his own comedy channel “Jeff and Larry’s Comedy Roundup”, a partnership with SIRIUSXM. He has hosted numerous television shows including “What’s It Worth”, “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader”

and “American Bible Challenge.” He created the games “Relative Insanity” and “See What I Mean?” and has his own outdoor company, Foxworthy Outdoors, which features a line of products related to the outdoor lifestyle. Away from the stage, Jeff is focused on his family including his new grandson. When asked how he came up with the idea for the tour, Jeff said “You always hear old people talk about how the world is going to heck in a hay wagon and how much better things were in the “Good Old Days” … Well, one day it hit me, why not put pen to paper and see if it really was better? It didn’t take long for me to realize that this is a comedy gold mine and it covered multi generations.” Tickets go on sale Friday, June 11, 2021 at 10 am. Tickets are

Immigrants, They Get The Job Done “When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were [once] foreigners.” — Lev. 19:33-34 (NIV) “Nearly 300 thousand illegal entries make many more unemployed to care for,” one headline reads. “One foreigner enters by stealth for every one who is legally admitted,” reads another. These news stories appear as though they were ripped from the front page of Breitbart. In reality, they were published in 1925 in the Wisconsin Kourier, an infamous KKK-owned newspaper. Sadly, even 100 years later, anti-immigrant hate lingers on, and the excuses remain the same: “Illegals are stealing our jobs! They’re bringing crime! They’ll take over the country if we don’t stop them!” Even today, politicians and pundits parrot the same xenophobic talking points. Donald Trump ran his presidential campaign by stoking fear about Mexico sending drugs, crime, and rapists. Fox News’ Tucker Carlson argues that immigrants make America “poorer, and dirtier, and more divided.” Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene tried to set up an America First Caucus to stop “mass immigration,” which she called a threat to the “future of America.” And yet, these anti-immigrant arguments prove no truer now than they were a century ago. Immigrants do not steal jobs. On the contrary, they make the economy better for everyone. Nearly a quarter of American businesses are started by immigrants, and immigrants are twice as likely as native-born Americans to start new businesses. As INC reports: “From 1996 to 2011, the business startup rate of immigrants increased by more than 50 percent, while the native-born startup rate declined by 10 percent, to a 30-year low.” Many American companies, including AT&T, Google, and Pfizer, were started by immigrants. In fact, immigrant-started businesses make up nearly half of the U.S. Fortune 500. As

Newsweek reports, these businesses amass more than $6.1 trillion in annual revenue. They also “employ 13.5 million people and, on average, employ 11 percent more people than the median Fortune 500 corporation founded by a non-immigrant.” No wonder, then, that with so many immigrants starting large companies, many immigrants themselves have become rich. Of Forbes Magazine’s list of the 400 richest Americans, 42 were immigrants from 21 countries, and they all have a combined net worth of $250 billion. These wealthy immigrants include Tesla CEO Elon Musk, WhatsApp Founder Jan Koum, and New York City grocery mogul John Catsimatidis. Far from being a drain on the economy, immigrants stimulate economic growth. They create jobs, start businesses, and, most importantly, pay taxes. According to the Congressional Budget Office, as reported by Dispatch, undocumented immigrants pay more than $11 billion annually in state and local taxes. Overall, “50% to 75% of undocumented immigrants pay billions in taxes each year,” and they have been doing so for the past 25 years ever since the IRS allowed people to pay taxes without a Social Security number. In contrast, Former President Trump, as reported by Cornell University, “only paid $750 in federal income taxes in 2016, and nothing at all in 10 of the prior 15 years.” Immigrants, meanwhile, paid nearly $328 billion in state, federal, and local taxes in 2014. So who’s more American: the American-born businessman-turned-president who paid no taxes and whose businesses all went bankrupt? Or the immigrants who strive to live the American dream by working hard, creating businesses, and paying their taxes? This Fourth of July, let’s celebrate the people who really make America great. This county was built on immigration, and immigrants make America great. Special to T&T Magazine EXHIBITIONS “Josephine Sacabo: Those Who Dance” On View through through October 17, 2021 | PolkMuseumofArt.org/Sacabo Josephine Sacabo’s art is both of our time and embedded deeply in a time past. She is an acclaimed, New Orleans-based contemporary photographer whose body of work seems infused with a powerful nostalgia for the non-digital photographic forms and techniques of photography’s nascent years as an artistic medium in the previous two centuries. As visitors to “Those Who Dance,” an original exhibition of Sacabo’s most recent series, will quickly realize, Sacabo (b. 1944) is one of the most poetic photographers actively working in the United States today and one whose ethereal and moving photographs look nothing like those of any other artist. “Y2K: Art at the Turn-of-the-21st Century from the Permanent Collection” On View through August 28, 2021 | PolkMuseumofArt.org/Y2K This installation of works from the Museum’s permanent collection features a selection of objects in a variety of media and from a 20 JULY 2021

multitude of perspectives from the Y2K era. The works on display span the consequential period of 1998 to 2001, and, while most artists do not comment explicitly on the millennial change, their art is inseparable from the time in which they lived. Striving to produce meaningful art, artists, like everyone else in the late 1990s and early 2000s, grappled with a world on the cusp of great change and new realities, be they psychological, emotional, social, technological, or otherwise.

“Steven Chayt: Some Call it Art” On View through August 7, 2021 | PolkMuseumofArt.org/Chayt The Polk Museum of Art is pleased to present “Some Call it Art,” a solo exhibition by artist Steven Chayt. Conceptual to its core, Chayt’s work explores the various ways in which language and photographic images interact to provide visual encounters that are both humorous and paradoxical. Prizing ideas over the formal, Chayt’s practice pushes us to contemplate more than the literal object itself. Indeed, by challenging us to unravel the concepts that underlie each work in this show, Chayt provokes subtle “ah-ha” moments for each and every viewer. “Heart for Art” On View through August 28, 2021 | PolkFIND US ON FACEBOOK AND WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

District students. From each of these exhibitions, one piece is purchased by the Museum to be added to our Student Collection. This exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) of Polk County Schools, whose mission is to provide support for students of various disabilities as well as gifted learners. “Hindsight 2020: Art of this Moment” Online Exclusive Exhibition | PolkMuseumofArt.org/Hindsight2020 The Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College invited artists from across the Central Florida community to submit work for our “Hindsight 2020: Art of This Moment” online exhibition. A truly contemporary exhibition, “Hindsight 2020” sought art produced since March 2020 and that represents a diverse spectrum of perspectives, ideas, and reflections upon the transformative five months of our lives between March and August 2020. On multiple fronts and in many ways, our collective worlds and everyday existences shifted and changed dramatically in the first half of 2020, and we are excited to present an exhibition that showcases how individual artists have engaged with and considered this novel moment in time.

Woody’s Bar-B-Q Kicks Off Summer with a Locked and Loaded Burger Bash ®

As summer approaches and childhood memories of the heavenly aroma of burgers on the grill return, the Pitmasters at Woody’s Bar-B-Q showcase their grilling expertise with a tasty trio of gourmet burgers, available for a limited time only at participating locations. Designed to trigger the tastebuds of the classic Southern BBQ chain’s growing fan base, each new “Locked and Loaded” burger features a 1/2-pound of ground Black Angus steak at its core - perfectly prepared to lock in the flavor. Loaded with toppings that are right on target in the taste department, patrons will need two steady hands to hold on tight until the very last bite! “Following the awesome reception our Gone Fishin’ limited time offer received earlier this year, we’re really excited to see the response to these imaginative new burgers,” said Yolanda Mills-Mawman, Co-Founder and President of Woody’s Bar-B-Q. “Our chain is 41 years old with a very established menu of BBQ favorites and comfort food sides, but we still love to innovate and bring something new to the table. While burgers don’t really have a season and can be enjoyed any time of the year, summer is the perfect time for this release. We believe it will blow the concept of a backyard barbecue out of the water. And I can personally attest, they taste as good as they look. Our Hawaiian Burger on the regular Woody’s Bar-B-Q menu 24 JULY 2021

was once a limited time offer. I could definitely see one – if not all three – of these new offerings performing well enough among our guests to score a permanent position on our menu, too.” Among the soon-to-debut menu items in the “Locked and Loaded Burger Bash” promotion are:

THE BARREL BLUE CHEESE BURGER

This bold blue cheese burger is virtually bullet-proof! Sure to be a fan favorite, it showcases a 1/2-pound Black Angus steak patty topped with melted blue cheese, cool lettuce, ripe tomato, a crisp slice of red onion and just the right amount of ketchup and mayo on a toasted bun.

THE MUZZLE MUSHROOM SWISS BURGER

Mushrooms and swiss aren’t the only ingredients in the chamber for this burger with an unexpected kick. The secret is in our expertly grilled 1/2-pound Black Angus steak patty and toasted bun slathered in garlic butter and our tangy horseradish sauce. Rounding out this mighty mushroom masterpiece are sauteed mushrooms, sauteed onions, a slice of swiss,

cool lettuce and a ripe red tomato.

THE HAMMER MAC AND CHEESE BURGER

One bite of this burger and you’re going to want an immediate reload! Woody’s tops a 1/2-pound black angus steak burger with our original recipe mac and cheese, even MORE cheese, lettuce, tomato and a crispy crown of onion straws. To find a list of locations and peruse the rest of the menu, prospective patrons are invited to visit www.Woodys.com. About Woody’s Bar-B-Q®: After opening their first Woody’s Bar-B-Q in 1980, partners Woody Mills and Yolanda Mills-Mawman have spent nearly four decades setting the “bar” higher for classic Southern barbecue. From the humble beginnings of just one location in Jacksonville, Florida, a shared passion for barbecue, and a dog-eared collection of recipes, Mills and Mawman have grown the Woody’s BarB-Q brand to locations reaching from the Deep South where barbecue is king to the Northeast and Midwestern fronts. Perhaps best known for their legendary melt-in-your-mouth slowsmoked Signature Baby Back Ribs, Woody’s has also built quite a following among patrons with their secret recipe barbecue sauces and meats, as well as their freshly prepared comfort food-inspired side dishes.

Beaches, Creatures, and Cowboys: Florida Film Posters is on loan from the Museum of Florida History, and features the colorful and eye-catching posters and lobby cards that advertised some of Florida’s most famous films from the early 1920s to the present. They are all part of the Museum of Florida History’s permanent collection of Florida movie memorabilia. The Florida sunshine, coastlines and attractions provided the sets for many movies, while the palm trees and beaches provided a beautiful backdrop. Movie producers have been making films in Florida almost since the dawn of the industry. For a short time in the early twentieth century, Florida even rivaled California as a place for movie making. However, a lack of government support, money, and studio facilities hurt the industry here, and movie companies soon began leaving the area. In 1920, though, when many other studios were heading for Hollywood, Norman Studios set up shop in Jacksonville. Although whiteowned, its movies featured all-black cast members, drawing from the large pool of African American actors and studio workers in the area. Even after most studios had gone to the West Coast, many films still included some scenes shot in Florida. Tarzan swung through the Florida jungles, swimming champion turned actress Esther Williams frolicked on the beaches, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon lurked in the state’s dark and mysterious springs. More recently, major studios, like Universal, Disney, and MGM began moving to the state. Florida now boasts the third largest movie industry in the country. “We thought this would be a fun, summertime exhibit as our movie theaters reopen, and we celebrate getting back to in-person activities,” states Jennifer D’hollander, museum director. The museum is hosting this traveling exhibit and other great events this summer, including: 28 JULY 2021
