ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).

By Erica Smith

The Chicken Chronicles Part II Living the Coop Dream “I have a lot of fruit trees and my own little vegetable garden and chickens. “ — Gisele Bundchen “We have a micro-farm - it’s a step up from a garden. We have a pretty extensive vineyard. We grow about 60 percent of our own food, make our own wine, have chickens for eggs. “ — Emilio Estevez “I have a farm and I love it there. There’s really nothing to do, but watching the chickens, it’s fun. “ — Salma Hayek “I’ve raised chickens for their eggs for years, and I must say that it is a most satisfying pastime. A backyard chicken coop is an obtainable introduction to farm life and nothing beats a homegrown egg! “ — Martha Stewart I am very happy to report we are nearing the three month mark and our little chicken farm is thriving! In fact, we have given the coop its official name – Cypress Chicken Cottage – and our tiny flock continues to amaze us with each day. I know it sounds, as if I am gushing, but in a way we have become a little chicken crazy. Our days now start and end with our micro farm and the girls have become backyard celebrities with coverage in the local newspaper and on Backyardchickens.com. We are beginning to live the “coop dream.” We have experienced a few ups and downs including the discovery of two roosters who had to be quickly re-homed. That is a euphemism for “get rid of the rooster before it crows” but the story ends well. Who knew it was so hard to tell roosters from hens…believe me when I tell you the process is as reliable as flipping a coin. No matter how many hours you spend scouring the internet for charts, graphs and insider tips, when it comes to sexing a chicken, your odds are better off in Vegas. But,

back to the “roo-st” of the story. We started our flock with three chicks and after a few days the dynamic just didn’t “feel” right. I began consulting every website, looking at hundreds of online images and finally stumbled across the most detailed drawing of developing chicks in order to confirm our “hen” was indeed a rooster. He was quickly dispatched to the chicken farm and we went home with our little yellow “Juliette.” Well, several weeks later, “Juliette” began exhibiting some of the same behaviors and she became “Romeo” overnight. This little wrinkle was thankfully solved by our gracious neighbors who provided “Romeo” with new home on their family farm in Haines City and I am very happy to share he is living the good life with grandpa. Losing a chick left us with no other option than to expand the flock. Remember how I said we were only going to have three chickens…well, I have already broken that promise and after a visit to the chicken swap, we are now the proud parents of five girls – Charlotte, Scarlett, Savannah, Anna and Emily. We have hit a new milestone this week as Charlotte and Scarlett are clucking and have started roosting on the high bar. Coop construction has been one of the most memorable moments in our marriage. My husband, in true Keith fashion, has constructed one of the most adorable coops complete with a spacious run and chicken swing. I was a little skeptical of the chicken swing but Savannah, Anna and Emily have become quite the acrobatic trio with their nightly aerial act. We look forward to the next development here at Cypress Chicken Cottage as Indian Summer and the October Harvest Moon will hopefully bring the promise of EGGS! Q&A YOUNG ARTIST TRICIA SHAMBURGER By Mary Joye

Tricia Shamburger has talent and a gift for expressing herself in pictures and words. The questions asked were mature ones, but her verbal skills parallel her ability to make subjects, familiar, pop or imagined light up the canvas and convey her inner most spirit. She shared it with us!

Tell us about your process. Tricia: The process I go through is both frustrating and therapeutic all at once. “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home” -Twyla Tharp.

What got you interested in art? Tricia: Nothing got me interested in art, it just happened as soon as I could pick up a crayon. It was and still is a way to get all of my ideas out onto something more than just my head.

What is your favorite media? Tricia: The medium I choose to paint with is Acrylic. I use the primary colors in all of my paintings. When I was younger, I

8

AUGUST 2015

immediately bought what color I wanted at my local craft store, but with the basics you can make any color. Sometimes I mix a color with another and discover a unique color that in itself is amazing. As much as I love Acrylic, I really want to try oils because it’s very forgiving. With oils if you don’t like something you did, you can paint right over it. On the other hand, acrylic, unless you do it right away you have to paint

the part over and over again.

How long does it take you? Tricia: This has to be the hardest question to answer. I can never keep track of how long it takes me. Sometimes I will paint something every day for hours upon hours but other days I paint nothing. For example, the painting of me holding a baby wolf I’m still not done with because I laid it into the corner of my room a couple of months ago. I don’t know how to describe it but something inside of me says I’m not done with it, so I just have to wait and see what the future holds!

WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM • FIND US ON FACEBOOK

What inspires you? Tricia: Nature, past experiences, and tasks I do throughout my daily life. Something as simple as raindrops on the car window, can light a spark that can set me off into my own world for hours. We as humans tend to overlook a lot of things around us. All it takes is to look around and you are bound to find beauty. Whether it’s the leaves on the ground below you or the way the sun is shining through the trees. You can find beauty as long as you open your mind. In contrast, some of the best things in life aren’t things. Sometimes I won’t go off of a picture I’ve taken, instead I’ll go with my emotions and see where that takes me. Describe this kind of talent at age 16! Tricia: The best thing people say to me is, “You’re really talented for your age.” Sometimes I say in my head, “What?! Are you crazy? There’s a bunch of mistakes I have yet to fix!” But what I’ve come to realize is that art is the one thing where it’s okay to have flaws. Any awards yet? Tricia: I have never entered my artwork into a contest before, but this upcoming school year (my junior year) I got accepted to be a part of the Center of the Arts Program. This program at my school expands your bubble. I’ll be learning about and from artists all around the world. I get to do something I’m very passionate about with people that are also passionate. Is your family supportive? Tricia: Yes, my family is nothing but supportive of my work. They always want to have a peek! It makes me happy to see the joy on their faces when they see a new piece. My Aunt Carolyn loved the elephant painting, so I decided to give it to her so she could hang it up in her office. It’s an indescribable feeling seeing what you’ve created from scratch on a wall where everyone can see.

What does the future look like? Tricia: I would like to explore more with different techniques and do more abstracts. I’ve been doing

pieces that require days of detailed attention, it would be nice to let go and do some splatter paint! Truthfully, I can’t tell what the future will hold. Every day I have an urge to explore a new medium or idea, but I end up working on the same piece some more. I can’t read two books at the same time, maybe it’s kind of like that. Ideas are infinite in my book.

Talk about art to an unbeliever.

Tricia: Art is all about what you feel

or want to express. Art is your voice, not anyone else’s. Do not compare your art to others. Everyone has

different ways of interpreting things or emotions. Why compare? Others might say “I don’t get it” or “that’s

weird”. This is only because they’re

not you! Nobody can think what you think besides you.

Now talk about what it means to you.

Tricia: Art enhances my life dra-

matically because it’s a way for me to cope with happiness or sadness,

anything I’m feeling it can be done Sometimes I feel like if I don’t get

my ideas out, I might explode. Art enhances the lives of everyone around you. It might speak to them or spark some connection or emo-

tion. Art connects people. The beauty of it is that we all interpret different perspectives.

Latest endeavor?

Tricia: “Rainy days” was inspired by all of the rain we have been having. Studying the raindrops was really

interesting; I’m planning on painting more!

We know you will succeed! If you want to see more check out her Facebook page “Art of Tricia”.

Veterinarian of the Month When Loren Nations graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1981 his dreams of becoming an influential veterinarian in a big city would follow many paths. After graduating from UF with his veterinary degree in 1991 he completed a medical and surgical internship at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, NY considered the Johns Hopkins of veterinary medicine. Instead of remaining in New York City he returned home to practice “big city” medicine with his mentor Dr. John Maxwell. Dr. Nations’ desire to help animals and commitment to practice at the highest level led to specialty board certification in canine and feline practice, one of only 425 ABVP diplomats in the country and 27 in the state. With this expertise, the practice has flourished into a seven doctor 24 hour emergency and critical care hospital, specialty referral center, and general practice. Dr. Nations has devoted his life to creating a center that will improve our pet’s lives for years to come. Dr. Nations The completion of a state-of-the-art 10,000 square foot veterinary center is only the beginning of the medical advancements Dr. Nations hopes to bring to Central Florida. “My life revolves around my family and animals. They are one and the same, that is who I am and why I am so passionate about being a veterinarian.”

SARA MICHAELS’

PORCH You know sometimes those reality shows really do find a star. Remember that show on the USA Network called “Nashville Star”? It was basically a country version of American Idol. It introduced us to artists like Chris Young, Miranda Lambert, and Kacey Musgraves. My porch pick this month is none other than the immensely talented Kacey Musgraves. I’m a sucker for singer/songwriters. To me, singing is a gift…and writing is a talent. The lost art of poetry put into song. Kacey is one of the best out there. Her lyrics are so simple; yet, so deep at the same time. I’m also a fan of those that aren’t scared to push the limits. Kacey is known for her controversial lyrics in a conservative format, like country music…she pushes the envelope… and I adore her for it. Kacey rarely does any shows in Florida; however, the Tampa Bay Rays booked her for their Summer Concert Series, and I JUMPED on my chance to see her in person. The concerts take place in the outfield of the stadium and it’s standing room only. I’m 5’4” on a good day, so it was very difficult to see around people, so I wandered off from my group and stretched out in right field to watch her on the huge monitors. Her voice was flawless. Country song after country song, she reminded me why I love country music…tears streamed down my face knowing that there are still people out there like me 12

AUGUST 2015

who love the traditional sound of the genre…she embraces it. Kacey’s music inspires me to do some pretty random things. Her song “Follow Your Arrow” from her previous album, inspired one of my tattoos…on her latest album, her song “Die Fun” inspired the purchase of our new boat. Her lyrics just put life into perspective for me. The album just released is called “Pageant Material”…it even features a duet with country music legend, Willie Nelson (the only song that she wasn’t a co-writer on, might I add). Of course, I bought the album on the day of its release and didn’t stop listening to it for almost two solid weeks. It showcases 14 solid tracks, 46 minutes of nothing but solid country music. If you have been yearning for a traditional sound, a phenomenal voice, and lyrics that truly hold meaning…look no further than purchasing any and all of Kacey Musgraves material. You will NOT be disappointed. BY SARA MICHAELS Host of “On The Porch” Monday - Friday, 3pm - 7pm 97 Country WPCV, 97.5 FM

he history of the humble hot dog begins as early as the infamous Roman emperor Nero whose

kitchens were responsible for producing the first recorded sau-

sage links after discovering pig intestines could

be stuffed with a tasty combination of game

meats, spices and wheat. However, humans have been curing meats since 50,000 B.C. so the first

hot dog could have been served at the annual Caveman Cookout. All kidding aside, the Great American hot dog story has “links” to much of

“Viennese.” Many food historians also report that

served in German villages for centuries and are the true

source of the modern hot dog. Despite all the different

the ideal meat companion for sauerkraut and beer.

Americans consume 20 billion hot dogs a year and

THE HEIGHTS AT CLEVELAND HEIGHTS GOLF COURSE

22

AUGUST 2015

By Loren Spangler Photos By Chris Douglas The history of Cleveland Heights dates back to 1923 when real estate magnate H.A. Stahl bought five-hundred-sixty acres on South Lake Hollingsworth to develop a subdivision. Among his leisure time ideas for the nearly one-million dollar investment was a stylish golf course and clubhouse which opened in the spring of 1925. By 1927, due to financial difficulties and the inability to pay his taxes, the City of Lakeland (Division of Parks and Recreation) took over the property and in 1935 changed the name to “Lakeland Yacht Club.” Many transformations have taken place since then, including lifting the ban on women teeing off on weekends in 1973. The clubhouse, renovated in 2001, boasts over twenty-thousand square feet and offers a full service restaurant with an extensive breakfast, lunch, and evening lounge menu. There are also innovative specials like Penne Primavera and Apple-wood Bacon BBQ Chicken Pizza. On Monday there are two-dollar Pints. Wednesday features a Hot Buffet with Soup-Salad and Fried Chicken. Thursday is Ladies Night (6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.) with onedollar drinks. On Saturday, guests enjoy sevendollar domestic pitchers. Sunday has two-dollar Mimosas, and four-dollar Bloody Marys. “Lots of folks think our golf course and

clubhouse is private, but it’s not,” says Cleveland Heights Golf Club General Manager Brock Witmyer. “We want everyone to know we are open to the public,” he says and emphasizes their staff is conscientious and people friendly. “A good attitude is very important in this business,” he adds. Brock points out that Cleveland Heights is unique in that there are no condominiums on the golf course, so players can experience an open space feeling and being with nature. Witmyer has been with the City of Lakeland for twenty-five years and has served as General Manager since 2003. “Our goal at The Heights is to provide a peaceful atmosphere where people feel relaxed and comfortable,” says Bar and Lounge Manager Ashley Von Heal. “The view of the golf course from the veranda makes the Clubhouse one of a kind. We work hard to take care of our guests and feel it’s important to maintain this standard daily.” Ashley is experienced in the hospitality business and comes from a hands-on background. She started out as a server, then tended bar, and progressed to her current position of organizing day to day operations. The restaurant and lounge has been under the management of Ovations (Everything’s Fresh) Food Services since June 2014. The Clubhouse Grill is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Happy Hour is daily from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There is a food menu in the lounge from 11:00 a.m. to close. Ask about their daily specials. Worth noting: In 2012, they won the coveted Golden Plate Award to The Heights for “Best Fried Chicken.” Open to the public for over eighty years, the twenty-seven hole municipal facility offers an upscale Pro Shop, golf instruction, practice areas, and restaurant/bar. Annual memberships are available and green fees vary according to the season. The facility also offers a driving range with small, medium, or large buckets available for

purchase. Cleveland Heights maintains the status of being a Historic Golf Trail…one of a collection of sixty Florida Department of State courses dating back to the 1890s. Ashley emphasizes The Heights is generational. “It’s a place where Dads, Moms, Sons, and Daughters can enjoy the golf course, lounge, and restaurant,” she says. Brock adds that the goal of the club is to provide a quality, golf and lake experience and families are a big part of that. Host your wedding or next banquet at Cleveland Heights. The dining and banquet room of the clubhouse are perfect for a group gathering. Contact Opal Phakousonh at catering to coordinate your event with courtesy and personal service. ANTI-Social Media Every now and then I take a digital detox and deactivate my social media accounts. I de-clutter them, too. I have “friends” that I have no idea how they got on my sight. I get oogled on Google. Since when can people follow you on Google when there is absolutely nothing to follow? I get up. I go to work. I come home. Please stop following me. I’m just not that interesting. Also, let’s stop using the words friends so loosely. It’s like the music business tossing around the phrase, “I love you!” I was in the music business for years and told even Gene Simmons when I worked for KISS, “I love you, Uncle Gene.” There was no love. There was no affection or anything else your mind can conjure. He was not my uncle. There was respect for his talent. He was a mentor, who I later said, “When you quit being my tormentor, you became a mentor. Thank you.” “I love you” really meant, I thank you.” So let’s think of a more authentic word for Facebook or any other site’s word for friends. How about Internet Intimates? I love a good oxymoron. I’m beginning to feel like a moron for ever getting on these sites anyway. At least LINKEDIN allows you to see (for the most part) who has “viewed your profile”. Some people are anonymous, but it’s just business patter that doesn’t matter. How about Nosy Neds and SIGN UP FOR OUR NEW WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER AT WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

Negative Nellies? How about Stalkers, Gawkers or Talkers? How about Broadcast Braggarts? Do you know that Depression is on the rise as some people look on Facebook at your so-called normal life and get despondent over theirs? Yup, clinical truth. So, as I choose to de-activate yet again, which is not an easy thing to do, I will write here what I post there….I’m going on Digital Detox for a while….Ya’ll who are really my friends will always know where I am and what I’m doing and you can pick up the phone and call me. You who are looking through my pictures file and all my “Friends” will have to choose someone else. And some of you are just mean….keep you mean posts and your personal vendettas off the Internet, please. Choose the person who posts, “I woke up with a fever today? Had the chills. Think I’ll stay home. Does anyone feel as bad as I do?” Yes, but not bad enough to want to read the post and reply. How do you have “likes” on such a comment? But if I really was your friend, you could call me so I could help you feel better. Now that’s social! QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com AUGUST 2015

Today’s youth are growing up in a world

dramatically with children being raised by a

Young people need support and mentor-ship

to succeed. They also need to have a place where they are physically and emotionally

safe with access to tutoring and recreational programs that promote education, health, social character, and leadership.

This exhibition, The Moon Museum (1969): Apollo XII’s Secret Art Mission, was curated by Jade Dellinger in partnership with the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at Florida South Western State College to celebrate that first space art project. The Moon Museum was the brainchild of New York sculptor Forrest “Frosty” Myers, who invited a group of the most significant artists of the time, including John Chamberlain, David Novros, Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg to join him in contributing individual drawings. Myers collaborated with engineers at Bell Laboratories to transfer the images (using a then-cuttingedge photo-reduction technique developed for micro-circuitry) onto a handful of identical postage stamp-sized, paper-thin ceramic wafers, one of which was secretly attached to the Apollo XII lunar landing LEM 6. It has remained on the surface of the moon for more than 45 years. This exhibition features one of the few remaining 28

BRIAN’S BRAIN

By Brian Bruchey

The Anniversary Last month, my wife and I celebrated our 17th anniversary. Please, hold your applause, especially, if you’re reading this in a public restroom. If our marriage was a kid, it would be in that weird, still-going-through-puberty stage, thinking it knows everything, and feels indestructible. It has been quite productive though. We’ve birthed one kid, managed to keep a dog for the past ten years, and had marginal success in the hamster department. It may be hard to believe, but we have never had an argument with each other. When I get mad, I just go be grumpy all by myself, so I don’t say anything stupid…which is always of high probability. In an article I wrote last year, I spoke about how I operate as a husband, but this is more about how we operate as a team. I believe that it’s the little things that keeps a wife happy. This is not a “size doesn’t matter” argument. When I say “little things”, I’m talking about small gestures, or tasks. When I see the Q-Tip container is almost empty, I refill it. When the toilet paper is out, I put a new roll on the toilet paper holder thingy. When I see my wife taking off her shoes, I go ahead and help her take the rest of her clothes off. I do laundry. I clean toilets. And I load and unload the dishwasher. Like I said, I do the little things to keep her happy. And when it comes to the big things, I hire someone else to do it. Actually, I usually tell her to hire someone, because I absolutely hate talking on the telephone. I hate texting too. I basically hate communicating with people. They say a good marriage is based on trust and good communication. Unfortunately, I don’t communicate with my wife very well. I hear her, most of the time, but her words don’t register in my brain. She might as well be speaking

Portuguese. I don’t talk much either. I think today I said to her, “That top makes your chest look bigger”, and “Are you going to eat that slice of garlic bread?” When it comes to trust, we do well with that. She trusts me to not screw things up too badly, and I trust her not to get too upset when I do. In our marriage, I try not to rock the boat. I do as I’m told, and nobody gets hurt. Specifically, me. I’m an easy going guy. I’m like a dead fish in a toilet bowl---I go with the flow. Maybe to a fault. Many women often wish they had a husband who does whatever they want. My wife gets tired of it. She gives me choices, “What do you want to do today?” “Whatever works for you” I will answer. “What do you want to have for dinner?” “Food” I answer. “When do you want to leave?” “Whenever” I reply. She tells me that she doesn’t like being the one to make all of the decisions. Before we got married, I was told that marriage is all about compromise. I just decided to go all in. Beyond compromise. She makes the decisions, I go along with it. The path of least resistance, and all that. I gave my wife absolute power. They say absolute power corrupts, but it’s not always the case. Believe me, I’ve tried to corrupt her. It hasn’t worked yet. Get back with me in another 17 years. Brian “Obedient” Bruchey QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS bruchey@gmail.com AUGUST 2015

T&T MAG: How did you become interested in bartending? AND How long have you been slingin’ the drinks? JULIE: There was a bar shift opening at my work and I was offered the job. I’m not the slingin’ type, but I have been keeping it classy since March of this year. T&T MAG: What’s your customers’ favorite drink that you make (a signature drink)? JULIE: A Chocolate Martini. T&T MAG: Tell us about your customers... JULIE: We have a lot of regular guests that are all unique. They love being called by their names and for us to memorize their favorite drinks. JULIE: I’m a Lakelander! T&T MAG: What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen a guy do or say to try to pick up a girl? And/or the funniest pick up line? JULIE: Best pick up line…Now I know why Solomon had 700 wives…because he never met you. T&T MAG: Best cure for a hangover? JULIE: Milk, it does the body good. T&T MAG: Something your customers would be surprised to know about you? Do you have any hidden talents/hobbies? JULIE: I graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University down in Fort Myers with a dual major in Forensics and Criminal Justice. I plan on joining the Air Force as an officer. If everything goes as planned, I will be leaving for OTS by next year. I help with coordinating my church’s events at Word Up. It’s a church plant I am a part of here in downtown Lakeland. Right now I am assisting with a baby shower and three bridal showers. T&T MAG: When can people come by to see you at The Heights @ Cleveland Heights? Tuesday nights, all day Thursdays, Friday nights, and some Saturdays (take your chance and stop by though ;)). When I am not there, we have other great bartenders. TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

Turtles, Turtles Everywhere!

Recently, I was invited on a girl’s weekend to Melbourne with two friends. We stayed at the family’s waterfront condo, which has such a beautiful view. The mornings were met with long walks over the causeway bridge. To the left, groups of sailboats anchored in the bay like a picture that should be framed for the wall and to the right, fisherman heading out to sea in hopes of catching their limit for the day. The views, the smells, the other invigorated walkers on the bridge – what a great way to start the day! Days were loosely planned out, and breakfast was had. Then later each day, we enjoyed a little bit of pool time as well as relaxing leisure time at the beach along with afternoon cocktails, snacks, breezy conversations and strolls down the beach. Evenings were met with casual waterfront dining, music and light-hearted fun. No fuss, no muss. What could be better? TURTLES! Late one afternoon while walking around on the beach, my friend and I noticed these little “creatures” scurrying around the sand towards the water. At first, we assumed it was the crabs, which are moving about everywhere. Upon closer inspection…No Way! Baby sea turtles!! We were so excited that both if us were moving about like the Three Stooges – running for cell phones, jumping up and down like giddy teenagers and yelling for our other friend that had just made a trip up to the condo.

The baby sea turtles were coming from a huge nest that didn’t have a “nesting marker” on it like a few others in the same area. The commotion we created caused a small crowd to gather; everyone watching these little creatures make their long trek from their underground nest to the ocean. It’s a fight for life from the word “go”! Some turtles came out of the nest and down the beach like Michael Phelps in an Olympic race while others had to take breaks to re-gain strength every few feet. On-lookers were so excited at the sight of these baby sea turtles. We were all cheerleaders and body guards this day; protecting them from joggers running in the same path and small children with little fingers aching to touch or little feet unknowingly able to step on them. All of us willing these tiny creatures to continue on even though they were so tired and so young, making sure no debris hindered their path or nothing tried to swoop down to eat them before hitting the water. It just so happens that a flock of pelicans were teaching their babies to swoop into the water for mealtime not more than 50 feet from our band of baby sea turtles. Coincidence – I think not. No one wanted to see OUR baby sea turtle from

that nest on that day not make it down to the water’s edge. Typically the baby sea turtles only emerge from their nest at dark with the moonlight guiding them towards the water’s edge where waves help pull them into the ocean. Maybe all of the recent storms messed up their little internal clocks on this particular day. Several in our group live in the area and had been monitoring the nests for days for any signs of movement. One person contacted the official sea turtle hot line so the organization was aware of the unmarked nest. We were informed that many nests on the beach had been marked by GPS even if there were no present markers. A representative would come out the next day to check out the nest. I certainly learned a lot about sea turtles this weekend. Now I understand why they are endangered. Baby sea turtles have lots of obstacles to over come: fighting to make it out of their nest; next, with little flippers in motion, trying to get all the way down to the water’s edge and then into the ocean where life begins – if they don’t get eaten by other creatures first. However, humans are still the number one cause that keeps this species on the endangered list: polluting waters, poaching the nests for eggs, hunting them in the wild, destroying nesting spots, diminished beachfronts, and getting caught up in fishing nets. Unfortunately, only 1 in a 1,000 make it to what is considered adulthood. If they do, their life span is 80 years. Interestingly, the temperature of the sand also determines the sex of the turtles in the nest: below 85 degrees for males and above 85 degrees for females. With as H-O-T as it had been lately let’s just say that batch of babies were probably girls! Incredibly the females also come back to lay eggs every 2 to 5 years, nesting 3 to 5 times in a season, in the very same area where they were born. Each time they lay about 100-200 eggs. Considering the vast body of water they live in, venturing out some 1,400 miles at sea, instinctively knowing where to find this same area to make a nest and lay their eggs for a chance at survival. Our Florida’s east coast is one of the major nesting areas for green (sea) turtles in the world. Mother nature is truly awe-inspiring. Thank you for a weekend to remember for a lifetime. BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was ancient Chinese military strategist and philosopher Sun Tzu who made the following sage observation: “Opportunities multiply as they are seized.” • It’s been reported that putting earmuffs on a homing pigeon will keep it from wandering off. Tiny earmuffs, I imagine. • Have you ever heard of pink turtle-head, creeping Charley, scarlet monkey, lady’s ear drops, painted tongue, false dragonhead or the beefsteak plant? If you’re a horticulturist you may have; they’re all names of flowers. • The ferret, a domesticated relative of the weasel, gets its name from the Latin word for “little thief.” • If you’re a fan of the classic film “Casablanca,” you know that actors Claude Rains and Sydney Greenstreet portrayed the characters Renault and Ferrari. You might not be aware, however, that those characters’ names also are the names of two leading European auto manufacturers. • Until 1928, women who wanted to swim at the beach in Atlantic City were required to wear stockings. • Noted American composer and conductor John Phillip Sousa started out as an apprentice in the U.S. Marine Corps band at the tender age of 13. • Those who study such things say that among all prison inmates convicted of violent crimes, murderers are the ones least likely to have tattoos.

• It caused a bit of a scandal in the art world when a papercutting of a sailboat by famed French artist Henri Matisse hung upside-down in New York’s Museum of Modern Art for more than a month. It seems that in the artwork, the water’s reflection of the boat was mistaken for the boat itself, causing the mishap.

ANSWERS
