ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).
By Erica Smith
The Price Of Perfect The Price of Perfect People don’t understand the pressure on me to look perfect. — Kim Kardashian Tell me I’m clever, Tell me I’m kind, Tell me I’m talented, Tell me I’m cute, Tell me I’m sensitive, Graceful and wise, Tell me I’m perfect - But tell me the truth. — Shel Silverstein As I expected. “Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way — Mary Poppins Give up the nonsensical and punishing quest for perfection that dogs too many of us through too much of our lives. It is a quest that causes us to doubt and denigrate ourselves, our true selves, our quirks and foibles and great leaps into the unknown, and that is bad enough. — Anna Quidlen, from Being Perfect The hot topic around the lunch table this month has been all of the media coverage dedicated to the Kardashian clan. One recent headline actually read “Rob Kardashian Makes Trip Outside” begging the question of how did walking to the front door become a national newsworthy event. This newest headline certainly illustrates how far the tabloid media society has fallen. The only appropriate headline to follow up this important development should surely read “Kardashian Clan Continues to Breathe.” One fellow coworker aptly pointed out we are all to blame for the Kardashian coverage as our willingness to read and follow such nonsense provides all the marketing momentum needed to keep their antics in the news. While this is a far and wise assessment, I think the problem with the Kardashians and Kylie
in particular, is the pursuit of perfection. The Kardashians, while not perfect by any standards have been setting an unattainable picture of American perfection. Take a quick look at pictures of Kylie from two short years ago and you can begin to see what the perfection machine can accomplish. This new standard of physical and material perfection is exactly the core problem with the whole Kardashian mess. What girls see from the images shared both by the family and the tabloid media is a fantasy. That type of transformation shows just how far we are willing to go in order to achieve a fabricated picture of perfection. Her appearance and life appears perfect just like her sisters before her. If you look like this…your life will be perfect. Perhaps, that is my biggest gripe with the whole disaster. I recently read a book by Anna Quindlen about the subject of being perfect. The book is a very quick read and leaves you with this profound question… do I need to be perfect? I have to admit, after finishing the quick read, I was thinking…is that all there is? But, that is the point. We need to move past this desire for absolute perfection. We must stop this pursuit of the ideas, images and poor realizations that makes us so unhappy. Is this quest for perfection the true root of our problems? In the end, the Kardashians are not to blame for our problems, as we are allowing them to set our standard of perfection. We need to change the narrative by not falling for this idea of perfect looks, perfect careers and perfect personas but instead discover what makes us passionately imperfect. BRIAN’S BRAIN
By Brian Bruchey
Nurses This month, I’d like to acknowledge all of the fine nurses out there! Over the past few weeks, I’ve met more nurses than I really cared to, thanks to some of my back problems. In one weekend, I met nurses at an urgent care, nurses at an emergency room, and nurses at my primary doctor’s office. And then, most recently, many more nurses at the hospital where I had surgery. All those nurses, and not a one of them had a bad attitude, or treated me in any way that was less than professional. I do miss the days when nurses wore the white hose, short skirts, and those little caps. Maybe it’s just me being old-fashioned. Maybe it’s just me having a thing for nurses in white hose and short skirts. These days, most nurses wear scrubs and Crocs. Not exactly the sexiest outfit, but then, they’re not there to look sexy, they’re there to make me feel better. Many years ago, I had surgery on a broken nose. Most of the nurses there were Dunkards. For those of you unfamiliar with the term Dunkard, they are a lot like the Amish. Very capable in their job, not much in the hubba-hubba category. I understand all this makes me sound quite sexist. I guess I watched too many Cinemax movies in my teenage years. Seriously though, I have loads of respect for nurses. In the recent months, all of my nurses have been nothing less than great. Nurses do a lot of hard physical and mental work. Lots of heavy lifting, lots of running around. They work with a lot of gross things, and a lot of gross people. They put up with a lot of crap, both literally, and metaphorically. My own Mother battled cancer in 2013 and 2014, and the nurses she had were great as well. The drugs they had her on, gave my Mom not only a different personality, but the occasional hallucination that made visits with her quite interesting. Regarding that different personality,

there were times she became downright mean to a few of her nurses. There was one male nurse in particular that she hated with a passion. I apologized to the nurse, but he told me not to worry about it…he didn’t take it personal, and he knew it was the drugs talking. As with any profession, there are always a few bad apples. Fortunately, I personally haven’t met any bad nurses. My articles for Today & Tonight Magazine don’t normally cover serious matters, but I would like to just say a special thanks to the wonderful nurses (as well as doctors and volunteers) at Family Health Center of Lake Wales, Owl Now, Heart of Florida, Winter Haven Hospital, and Neurology & Neurosurgery of Winter Haven. And you know, the pharmaceutical companies get a bad rap in the media. Let me just give a special thank you to them as well. If not for them, I would be a crying little bitch right now. Hopefully, I am on the road to recovery. That road does not include Lake Howard Drive. Seriously Winter Haven….fix that road. When you have back and neck pain, that is one road you do not want to ride on. Here’s to you nurses! Keep up the great work. Since you’re not using those white dresses and hose, can you give some to my wife? You know, for home care? — Brian “I need a Candy Striper” Bruchey QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS bruchey@gmail.com

SARA MICHAELS’
PORCH I’m sure it will be to no surprise that I chose to review Michael Ray’s debut album for this month’s Porch Pick. I had a lot of mixed feelings when it was released, OF COURSE I wanted it to be good and it was obvious that I would choose it for a review. Then again, I didn’t want readers/ listeners to think that I would be bias considering the history that Michael and I share. I can honestly tell you, I put my prejudices aside and sat down to really evaluate his album in an impartial way. The result: Hands down, the very best debut album that I have heard from ANY artist. I SWEAR to you that I REALLY tried to find something wrong with it. With that being said, there’s only ONE song that I’m not fond of, it’s a catchy song…but the lyrics are repetitive & grammatically incorrect and that drives me crazy. Out of 12 tracks, only one “so-so” song… that’s amazing! His first single “Kiss You in the Morning” was released in February, as of the beginning of August selling over 230,000 copies, and securing him his first Number One song on the date of the release of his debut album on August 7th. Michael led Warner Brothers with the MOST added debut artist to radio stations playlist in the label’s history. He is also the FIRST male debut artist to score a Number One in 2015. Michael & his record label did something very special for WPCV (97 Country) on the day of his album release. He hosted a private dinner with VIP contest winners at Texas Cattle Company, went through the album…talked 12

about the songs, sang a couple of songs, and presented each winner with a plaque to commemorate that event that included his CD, before anybody else got one. The following day, he saluted MY hometown (Winter Haven), by hosting a CD signing in Wal-Mart. Some unintelligent people made comments on Facebook about how signing at a Wal-Mart wasn’t very prestigious. Let me remind them of these facts: Wal-Mart is the BIGGEST store in the nation that is the LARGEST distributor of tangible albums...there aren’t any music stores around anymore like Specs to purchase CDs. PLUS Wal-Mart keeps prices down for the average customer, and I bet that 80% or more, of country music fans shop there. Hence why the BIGGEST star in the country Garth Brooks chose them to be

Fans of Sara Michaels and “On The Porch”
the only distribution store of HIS music. Oh wait...I tend to remember Garth doing an in-house performance there as well. Making friends with Wal-Mart is NOT a stupid move as a career choice. With that being said...Michael chose to come home during the biggest days of his life...and honor the people that got him there... keeping him humble and grateful. What would they suggest he do as far as an autograph signing? The MidFlorida Amp? They don’t sell CDs. (Yes, I am still a bit protective of my little brother from another mother!! Haha) Now back to his album. Michael takes his career and his music VERY serious and personally. He does not want to be lumped into a category of “one of those guys” that just sings about drinking, tailgates, tanlines, and whiskey shots. His second single is called “Real Men Love Jesus.” One of the main things that I have noticed throughout my years of friendship with Michael is that his faith is VERY strong. He removes his hat at the table, and prays before every meal. Another thing that is no secret is that he loves his family…very much. “Real
Men Love Jesus” is a song that Michael said that would have been his beloved late grandpa’s favorite song, if he were still with us. Tragically, Michael lost his idol suddenly earlier this year. I know that everything that he does is for him, his God, his family and fans. I’m given a certain amount of words that I can use in an article, so I will try my best to wrap this up. If you don’t download or purchase the entire album (which you should)…let me tell you the standout songs besides the two above mentioned. “Everything in Between” is hands down my favorite. “Somewhere South” is a song that anyone can relate to if they are a southerner and have spent too much time away from home. Gosh it’s so hard not to list all the songs…haha and “This Love” is another one that grabbed my attention. Just get the whole thing, you won’t be sorry! To the listeners of 97 Country in over 32 Florida counties, YOU made this happen for this young man. Lake County believed in him first, I heard him for the first time at Boots N Buckles Saloon as he was a struggling young musician, and I presented him to you. YOU made this happen. Be proud of yourselves…I sure am. He’s already appeared on Good Morning America, performed on The Grand Ole Opry many times, he’s in countless magazines, all over the internet…and the thing is… this is just the beginning. BY SARA MICHAELS Host of “On The Porch” Monday - Friday, 3pm - 7pm 97 Country WPCV, 97.5 FM

most scenic venues in the country. This event is known for its beautiful lakefront setting and friendly atmosphere. The Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival attracts over 35,000 spectators and draws top car collectors from all over the southeast. On Friday night from 6-10 p.m., one-hundred cars will take place at the art deco themed
Lake Mirror Park for the Budweiser Hot Rod Rendezvous and free outdoor concert/party. The night will be rocked away by the Lake Mirror Classic’s perennial favorite band, Junior and the MD’s. While the hot rods and custom cars fire up their engines to make some music of their own, Central Florida automobile dealers will unveil their new 2016 model cars. On Saturday, the day begins with the Concours d’Elegance (French for Contest of Elegance) which is the foremost featured event of the annual Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival weekend (October 16-18).
Approximately
one-hundred premium-classic automobiles are invited to be displayed along the Lake Mirror Promenade on Saturday. A thirty-five member team of expert judges will inspect and grade vehicles worthy to receive the coveted Lake Mirror Swan trophy. In case of an even score from the three-hundred point scale, judges will rely on the car’s ambiance or “presence” to break the tie. Also on Saturday, don’t miss the Vintage Fashion Show at 1 p.m. or the Awards Ceremony starting at 3 p.m. All special presentations will take place at the Lake Mirror

The Lake Mirror Classic is a coordinated festival of the highest level with multiple events occurring simultaneously; that type of management does not happen by chance. Without the tireless effort and attention to detail by show creator Ford Heacock III and his people, the renown collector car happening would not continue to be the elegant show it has evolved into. In addition to his involvement with Lake Mirror Classic, Ford Heacock III is owner and president of Heacock Classic Collector Car Insurance and Heacock Insurance Group. Heacock Classic, which is located in downtown Lakeland at the beautifully restored Old City Hall Building, is one of the top providers of classic, antique, exotic, and car collector insurance with over thirty-thousand policies nationwide. Heacock Insurance Group, located across the street from Heacock Classic @ 100 E. Main St. in downtown Lakeland, is your one stop shop for insurance. WILD FIRE BBQ GRILL & BAR
22
SEPTEMBER 2015
By Loren Spangler Photos By Chris Douglas At a great eatery, preparation starts with selecting the right meat, hand rubbing with a special blend of spices, and letting it rest for at least twenty-four hours. At Wild Fire BBQ Grill & Bar, they believe in using patience and not rushing their cooking… taking time to slowly smoke each and every choice of meat. For instance, pork shoulders are smoked for at least nineteen hours and their hand cut brisket twenty-one hours. The goal at Wild Fire is to organize every meal for guests just like they would for their personal friends and family. The care that goes into every dish shows their love for cooking, and that passion will keep loyal customers from Dundee, Haines City; Auburndale; Lake Alfred; Winter Haven; Bartow; and Lake Wales coming back again and again. “I have been in the hotel restaurant management business for twenty-seven years,” says owner Syed Raza. “My background is turning around distressed properties through bankruptcies as a Chief Restructuring Officer. I purchased the Red Roof Inn and restaurant two years ago.” He says since it was closed when he took possession, he had to start from the ground up. “In 2014, we opened the hotel, followed by the one-hundred ninety seat restaurant

in April 2015.” With a focus on BBQ and premium beef steaks, Wild Fire Grill’s chef, Robert Waugh, comes from a culinary background bringing with him his cooking talents from Palm Beach and the elite Grand Floridian at Disney. “As an Executive Chef, I have been honing my trade under “star chefs” for nineteen years,” he says and mentions that he has also been employed as a food and beverage director…”being responsible for operations in both the front and rear of the house.” Entertainment: Alternating on weekend dates from now until December 2015 will be Favorite Country Songs (past and present), Kevin Brooks, Bill “Elvis” Lindsey, and future entertainers to be announced. Guests should confirm dates and times. This month, they started karaoke night and also have plans in the works for bingo. “We are always looking for new, upcoming bands to introduce,” says Syed. “By acquiring additional entertainment, we continue to grow.” Wild Fire BBQ Grill & Bar is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their breakfast buffet consists of a made-to-order omelet station that includes fresh pancakes, all you can eat bacon, sausage, southern-style grits, and hash browns. There are also biscuits and gravy, breads, fruits, and much more (7 a.m. to 11 a.m. weekdays and until noon weekends). Their lunch favorite is a pulled pork sandwich with fries for $4.99. They also have other great sandwiches (with fries) for $4.99. Takeout orders are available. While there, ask about their private dining room that can accommodate one-hundred people or more and their full catering service for birthdays, reunions, corporate meetings, etc. The distance in miles for catering is proportional to the amount of people cooked for. Syed says Wild Fire BBQ recently catered a large event in Orlando that included one-hundred-fifty people. Draft Beer: (Yuengling, Bud Light, Budweiser,
Miller Lite ) $1.49. Wine by the Glass: (Red, Cabernet, White, Blush) $2.49. Soft Drinks: $1.98. Appetizers: BBQ Quesadillas, Macho Nachos, Fried Calamari or Pickles, Spinach Artichokes Dip, Jumbo Onion Rings, Wild Mushrooms, Wild Fire Wings, Sliders, Shrimp, Soups, and Salads (Grilled Chicken or Fish). Entrée/Mains: Selection of Wraps, Steak-BeefChicken Sandwiches, Fish Taco, Selection of Burgers. House Specials: Smoked Chicken, Ribs, Brisket-Pork Platters. Pasta: Chicken or Fettuccine Alfredo, and Shrimp Pasta. Hand Cut, Aged to Perfection Steaks (served at desired temperature): Tenderloin, Top Sirloin, RibEye, T-Bone. Fish: Salmon, Mahi-Mahi, Breaded. Generic Blow Up Men, Swinging Signs and Moving Billboards What do all of the above things have in common? They are annoying enough to cause an accident. They come out of nowhere and scare the heck out of you. If you’re a little A.D.D. or not, aren’t you just amazed at how many people are advertising with such frenetic pieces of junk like the blow up man with the flailing arms? They cost a lot of money and I don’t know about you but they are not attracting me. They are distracting me from safe driving. Then, I don’t mean to disparage anyone or anything, but surely you can think of better ways to get people to come to your business instead of making them stand out in the hot sun swinging a sign. They could get heat stroke. My compassion is intense as I pass them when they are smiling and waving. I don’t notice what
to it. Perhaps people are tired of seeing so many images in so many places. I love driving out west where the only sign you will see is “Last Chance for Gas”, weather worn and hand painted long ago by some outpost owner in the desert. You will not see another sign again for hundred miles or two. There’s a priceless commodity for wide open spaces. People love them. Let’s de-clutter the visual environment from a glut of stuff that really doesn’t work. If it worked, I could understand. If I took a poll of every reader that pulled in a place just because it had a big blowup man, I bet it wouldn’t be many. I also bet many like me would tell you that they noticed the GENERIC blow up man but don’t have a

They are HUGE and also highly distracting. I’m just reading one ad and another takes its place! You had me, you lost me! We are all so bombarded with advertising we are desensitized

he original phone remains attached to the front of the Derry Down, which was once a teen music club. I’ve often envisioned a young Gram Parsons calling his mother, Avis Snively Connor, to come get him after a rehearsal. Gram’s father, Cecil “Coon Dog” Connor, a celebrated Air Force veteran pilot, bought the small barn-like building so his son could perform in it. The building was brought up out of the weeds by an author. In 2013, Bob Kealing wrote the book “Calling Me Home: Gram Parsons and the Roots of Country Rock”. Parson’s helped create The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Winter Haven was his birthplace and a boyhood home. Eccentricity and tragedy could have been Parsons’ sole legacy. However, the Derry Down was the launching pad for much of country rock and it is that positive aspect of his life that is the focus of the renovation project. Main Street Winter Haven is restoring the property. They are now using more modern technology than that old phone to call on the community to complete it. The original intent to use this venue as a music listening room will be upheld. Executive Director of Main Street Winter Haven, Anita Strang shares, “Proceeds from Cosmic American Music Festival will go to the restoration of the Gram Parsons Derry Down while providing an amazing weekend of live music. This will be all about FUN from the fundraiser on Friday, Free Festival on Saturday and Juke Joint shows on Saturday night. It will be great music for a great cause to preserve a part of Winter Haven’s history.” Supporters and donations have come from near and far. The list was lengthy and is growing. She mentioned a few in-kind donors that were carrying the “bulk of the renovation” but took care to say, “We have been so blessed by so many. I would hate to miss anyone and thank everyone.” It is a quality project meant for future posterity. Don’t mistake this for some stuffy museum, though. It is a live music venue and it will be available for your events too! Strang states, “Gram Parsons’ Derry Down opened in 1964 as venue for teens with no alcohol. The Derry Down will reopen as an alcohol

free space, with the option to have it at special events. The space will be flexible in use providing Winter Haven with an option for 100-140 people. It’s perfect for a listening room. For those not familiar, it’s all about the music. Come play, listen and enjoy. We are providing a space to affordably expose people to different genres of music. Our deepest satisfaction and vision of course will be utilizing the building for its original purpose for musicians of all ages to play before a live audience.” Lots of live music will be enjoyed for the festival. Hickory Wind is coming down from Waycross, Georgia, which was another childhood home of Parsons’. The band was named after a famed Parsons song. Billy Ray Herrin who owns Hickory Wind Music and band mate, Dave Griffin shared some comments. Griffin relates, “We are really looking forward to coming to Winter Haven. This building is historical and significant. It’s perfect. It’s beautiful that it’s being restored to bring musicians of all ages together. I was introduced to music by Billy Ray Herrin. We put the band Hickory Wind together when Waycross, Georgia initiated a Gram Parsons Music Festival. We thought it would be a profound historical opportunity for a Waycross contingency to head to Winter Haven and tie the two together. That was exactly Gram’s life story, Waycross and Winter Haven.” We will welcome them both. Griffin concludes, “People should invest in it because it legitimizes the building as a historically significant place. It was a teen club and that was prominent in those days. Money was supplied so the kids would have a place to go. Teenagers are all about music. Gram needed that and looking at this place in hindsight, he made something out of himself coming out of this place. It makes the Derry Down even more important.” Herrin, who also owns Hickory Wind Music store in Waycross agrees, “A lot of people don’t know about the importance of Gram Parsons’ contribution to music. It will be great to come down to Winter Haven and see where Gram’s family is from. When Gram’s father, Coon Dog, committed suicide, his mother Avis moved him back to her hometown which was Winter Haven. We’re looking forward to playing there. I’ve been involved in paying tribute to Gram since his tragic death.
Gram said there were only two kinds of music: the kind you liked and the kind you didn’t. He had such a deep knowledge of the music and put styles together that influenced others like Keith Richards and Emmylou Harris.” You will hear lots of genre fluid music at this event. Herrin continued, “We have a term now called Americana music but Gram was playing it long ago. Playing from the heart was what he really did.” The heart of downtown Winter Haven is fortunate to have so much of this building intact, but much work needs to be done. Strang announced, “We are over the moon about the Derry Down receiving an Historic Marker from the State of Florida Division of Historic Resources designating Gram Parsons Derry Down as an historic site. The historic marker dedication ceremony will be held on November 5th, Gram’s birthday. We plan to gather at 5:30 for the ceremony followed by live music of course!” Buy a brick for the walkway. I did! Your name will be at the entrance. http://www.mainstreetwh. com/derry-down-project/buy-a-brick/ is the link. The Main Street Winter Haven office is located at The Chamber of Commerce across the street from the Derry Down. Strang offers other ways to get involved. “Now that the biggest single expense of the roof is complete, the generous in kind donations of labor and materials can start. There are many ways to donate that can be found on our website. We will be posting dates for work parties for the landscaping, fence and interior clean up.” Parsons is a legend. The Derry Down stands as a testimony. Much like Winter Haven itself, there is a reinvention going on and music will be part of it. Strang pays her respects to all who want to be part of this unique Southern town. “Gram Parsons Derry Down has proven that it is creating cultural tourism for our historic downtown. Main Street Winter Haven could not be more excited about our town’s future. With residential, retail, new restaurants & bars, two amazing art locations and our first craft brewery opening soon, the future of downtown as a work by day, play by night destination is here and now. Come play in an authentic downtown.”

Recently an aunt of mine died leaving the pieces of her life for others to sew up. She was 75 years old and lived alone with her cat in Orlando. She did not have a lot but some tangible items, “stuff” accumulated through life and, of course, bills so her siblings are now left to the task of finalizing her business which is a bigger burden when there is no will left behind. My aunt was always a bit quirky and kept to herself but a talented painter and photography hobbyist in her younger days while living most of her life in California. In recent years, a fear of driving and slight paranoia began along with the onset of Alzheimer. But her two local siblings, my father and a sister, kept in touch with her and tried to visit when allowed. My aunt did not suddenly get sick even though she was still a heavy smoker but she fell down stairs while trying to get back inside her trailer from the screened in porch. There was a stroke involved whether it caused the loss of balance and the fall or was caused after she hit her head on the ground from the fall is now neither here nor there. But this fall caused massive swelling on the brain with bleeding, a coma and then within a week death. She died peacefully at the hospice in Auburndale and I was able to pay my respects before she passed. Now that she is gone, there is the burden of death by her next of kin: taking care of her remains which in this case is just a cremation, proving to all creditors or bill collectors that she is no longer alive, breaking down her home and getting rid of “stuff” and making sure her beloved cat is well taken care of too. She had a small amount of money in her bank as well as two CDs that she

drew off of to live, she owned an older car, and a modest trailer but there is lot rent, utilities and so forth that continue racking up amounts owed until her “death” is legally finalized. Having a will to know her wishes or giving one of the siblings power over her estate would have lessened the stress for all. Unlike many that pass away she has the means to pay off any existing debt but the amount will grow depending on the number of weeks it takes for siblings to get power over her estate. For example, her lot rent is $500, even though the land owner knows she has passed until her death has legally been taken care of, she still owes him lot rent each month, so $500 will become $1,000 quickly and so on…no compassion for the dead and business continues as usual. This got me thinking. Who will take care of my “stuff” if something happens to me? Who will have the burden of shutting down my life? No one wants to have to think about these tough questions dealing with mortality and everyone hopes to live, what is in their mind “a long time”. But, something can change your path or expectations of a long life in the blink of an eye. “Shit Happens” as they say…something to think about. Who’s burden in death will you become? How can you make it easier? It makes me want to start the de-cluttering process of my life and stay better organized as well as write down a few of my wishes on paper to give directions on my life in death. http://www.aarp.org/money/ estate-planning/info-09-2010/ ten_things_you_should_know_ about_writing_a_will.html QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS tracey@todayandtonight.com SEPTEMBER 2015

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was noted 18th-century German scientist, philosopher and satirist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg who made the following sage observation: “It is almost impossible to carry the torch of truth through a crowd without singeing somebody’s beard.” • Sometimes looking at local ordinances can make you wonder what inspired lawmakers to pass such laws. For instance, in Florida it’s illegal to wear nothing but liquid latex while in a public place. • The lyrics to that favorite Irish ballad “O Danny Boy” were actually written by an Englishman. • Famed comedic actor Charlie Chaplin was born in England, but at the age of 19 he came to the United States as a performer with the prestigious Fred Karno company. Interestingly, Stan Laurel, of Laurel and Hardy fame, emigrated to the U.S. at the same time, as part of the same company -- as Chaplin’s understudy. • In a recent survey of pet owners, nearly half of all respondents said that the best description of their relationship with their pet would be “soul mate.”

• Sardinia, the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, also is an autonomous region of Italy. If you ever decide to vacation there, keep an eye out for “casu marzu,” a cheese that’s produced locally. Whether you’re keeping an eye out in order to sample it or avoid it depends on whether or not you have an appetite for adventurous eating. The makers of “casu marzu” deliberately introduce into the process the larvae of a particular cheese fly. Though the cheese is sometimes cleaned out before it’s served, it’s often presented in its original state, wriggling maggots and all.
