ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).

By Erica Smith

Scary, Spooky, Haunted and Forbidden May Jack-o-lanterns burning bright Of soft and golden hue Pierce through the future’s veil and show What fate now holds for you. — Author Unknown When witches go riding, and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers, ‘tis near Halloween. — Author Unknown Hold on, man. We don’t go anywhere with “scary,” “spooky,” “haunted,” or “forbidden” in the title. —Shaggy from Scooby-Doo People are often surprised when I answer my favorite time of the year is Halloween. Growing up in Polk County, it is a given that Christmas should be your automatic response. Around these parts, people simply light up when they discuss Christmas cantatas, white lights and Bisquick sausage balls, but for me, Halloween is the most magical time of the year. You can almost smell the mischief in the air when the first pumpkins are pushed to front door and the spicy smell of cinnamon brooms adds a familiar crackle to the produce aisle at Publix. You can always tell someone is from Central Florida based on their intimate knowledge of the Publix holiday planagram; almost as if we have a genetic internal mechanism that nods yes, autumn is here at the first sniff of those fragrant rushes.

Halloween is the perfect oppor-

tunity to gorge on sweets, stay up late and watch movies that scare you so bad sleeping in the dark

will never be an option. You can

be who you want to be and if you are blessed; your childhood was filled with a mother who made your Halloween costume each

year. I am one of those very lucky

souls whose mother put her entire heart into the crafting of her chil-

dren’s costumes. She sewed every single sequin and pushed that

rhinestone press a million times

in order to craft the world’s most sparkly Genie in Bottle. As if a

Greek Fate herself, she managed to weave red yarn into Raggedy Ann’s messy mop of a wig. My two brothers were two of the

mightiest, miniature superheroes the galaxy has ever known. And, on top of all the sewing, she also managed to churn out dozens

of cupcakes for three classrooms

while never missing a beat teaching a room full of first graders…. all before the days of Google, Pinterest and iPhones.

I take it for granted as an adult

how hard my mother worked, staying up all night to put the final flourish in place, just to

make my costume a showstop-

per. So, if you ask me why I love

Halloween so much, please don’t be surprised when my answer is because my Mother loves me so much.

SARA MICHAELS’

PORCH There are times when I don’t have an album to review (like this month)…so I will just choose the Top 3 songs that I feel you should be listening to right now… makes things easy! Coming in at Number Three is Randy Houser’s “We Went.” I am a big fan of Randy, and have been since his debut single “Anything Goes.” When Randy first came out, he was a bit on the heftier side, as far as his weight…he wore this unusual hat all the time…and despite his amazing voice, it just seemed as if Radio/Nashville wasn’t giving credit where credit was due. In the years since his first single, Randy has slimmed up and lost the hat, and lookie there…more airplay. (I hate that video killed the radio star) Randy’s voice is like no other in country music today. It’s incredibly strong, I mean…BOOMING strong. His voice is pure country with a smooth R&B sound to it. It’s different! You can definitely tell it’s him if you were just to turn on your radio and his song was on the air. Now as far as the song “We Went,” from the initial intro of the song, it almost has like an old west feel to it…like a modern day John Wayne movie sound to it. I love different when it comes to music…and this song isn’t like any other song on the radio…it slows down, speeds up, slows down…it will keep your attention and possibly increase the speed of your car if you were driving down the road. The Runner-Up position goes to Dustin Lynch and his Number One song “Hell of a Night” When you aren’t in the radio business and you just enjoy your favorite station on a daily basis, I know that you get sick of hearing the same songs over and over. Can you imagine actually doing it for a living? Dustin’s song has already hit the Number One spot and I can honestly tell you, that I still get excited to play it. I have tried very hard to get sick of this song and I just can’t! Let’s put it this way, the song was released in November 2014, and it just now hit Number One…and I STILL love it. Dustin is one of the

12

OCTOBER 2015

few “hat acts” left, meaning he still rocks the cowboy hat and I adore him for that! I guess you possibly could group “Hell of a Night” into one of those “bro-country” songs because the theme is similar…”trucks, dirt roads, girls”…but I am so use to Dustin NOT having this sound to his songs, that it attracted me to it because he’s doing something different than he usually does. And the winner is: CAM “BURNING HOUSE”!!!! OOOOOOH MYYYY GODDD THIS SONG!!! This song is hands down the best song that I have heard in years! I haven’t felt so strongly about a song since (ironically) Randy Houser’s “Anything Goes.” This song is 100% country. The production of this song is amazing. If you get a chance, look it up on YouTube, put on your headphones, crank up the volume, close your eyes and listening VERY carefully…you can hear actual fire crackles in the background. This song makes me just want to buy a copy for everyone. Cam’s voice is flawless in this haunting ballad. Basically, take Patsy Cline, the Dixie Chicks, and perhaps some Bonnie Raitt…and that’s exactly what you get with Cam. Two thumbs up! 10 out of 10…just get this song and thank me later!

BRIAN’S BRAIN

By Brian Bruchey BANDIT

Bandit is a beautiful tabby cat with the prettiest swirls. He gets along well with everyone he meets and will make an excellent addition to the family.

Big Halloween Decisions Big decisions to be made. Some really serious ones. Halloween is at the end of this month, and we haven’t come to an agreement on what our six-year old son will be wearing for the holiday. I asked him a couple of weeks ago, and he said that he wants to dress up as something from Minecraft. If you don’t know what Minecraft is, it’s basically a computer game where you build things with blocks, and the digital graphics are purposely not good, especially in this High Definition era. Holy cow, I suddenly sound like a salesman from Best Buy. The few characters in Minecraft are square-ish. Not square-ish in a Pat Boone sort of way, but physically, they are boxy. I told my son that I could make him a costume out of cardboard boxes, but it would be difficult to walk, and very hot. That kind of sounds like I’m describing my wife after she’s had more than three glasses of wine. The easy way out would be for me to just go out and buy him a costume. We went to one of the Halloween stores and found a Minecraft mask. It looked cheap…until I looked at the price tag. It was not cheap. Now comes my parental task to convince the boy he really doesn’t want to be a character from Minecraft, but something else instead. This is going to be tough. I need to think of something he likes, something that will be easy for him to wear at school, something that won’t be too hot for Florida Trick-or-Treating, and something that is cheap. I have quite the reputation of being a guy who likes cheap and easy. My wife, for some odd reason, hates it when I tell people that I like cheap and easy. Last year, my boy wore two different costumes for Halloween. For school, he wore a doctor’s outfit that he had gotten as a Christmas present the year before. For Trick-or-Treating, he wore a store-bought Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costume that I had purchased for a few bucks during a post-Halloween sale the previous year. I didn’t do a good job planning ahead this year, and now we are within the month of October. I can start by thinking of the cartoons he watches. He likes Doc McStuffins, but I’m not going to dress him up like a girl character, even though that seems to be the “In-Thing”

PEANUT Peanut is all puppy she is still learning her manners and will be an excellent pet for a person on the move if you like to jog she would be the perfect pet.

to do this year. He likes Spongebob Squarepants, even though we don’t allow him to watch that show, so that is out. He likes Paw Patrol, but dressing up like a dog sounds neither easy nor cool. It’s a bummer I just recently buzzed his hair which had gotten rather long. I could have messed it up, put him in swimming trunks, and he could have been a surfer dude. Or I could have parted it on the side, put him in a suit with money sticking out of the pockets and he could have been Donald Trump. Not only is my boy’s costume a problem, there will probably be some event that my wife will want us to attend, and it will require me getting a costume. I knew I should have purchased one for me during the post-Halloween sales last year. This year, I think I will definitely make some post-Halloween sale purchases. Not just for my son, and I, but also for my wife. I’ll buy several for my wife. Maybe sometime next January I’ll say to her, “Hey babe, the boy is already asleep…how about you put on that BatGirl costume…just for fun”. And maybe sometime next February I’ll say, “Hey babe, how’s about you slipping into that female pirate costume and ye can shiver me timbers”. Suddenly, I’m really looking forward to this. — Brian “Mr Cheap & Easy” Bruchey

TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

A Magical Time Of Year

Fall truly starts such a magical time of the year even if, in Florida, our leaves don’t change colors and our air doesn’t get a cool crispness as soon as the calendar turns its page to unveil October. It was always such an exciting time for me as a child when my mom decided to pull out our Halloween decorations. The bags or boxes that held these transforming little delights came out from the depths of the closet about two weeks before Halloween; just enough time to keep the “spirit” going but not long enough to over stay their welcome. The 3-D paper decorations held together by a little metal clip to keep their form: the fat pumpkin, the little black cat wearing the witch’s hat, goofy ghosts hanging about and the funny skeleton or crazy-eyed witch taped to the front door. Something so simple and so delicate transformed the living space into instant happiness. More Halloween knick-knacks scattered about the dining room and family room, but still perfectly placed with devotion to detail from year to year. And the candy, pretty glass bowls of candy also make up a part of the holiday décor – the edible part! Everyone’s home seemed to have these beautiful bowls of candy sitting out for all to enjoy. My favorite: Candy Corn! My mom always bought one bag of candy corn to “display” in the candy dish. I loved this colorful Super Sweet treat. I could eat half a bag if allowed. Today, however, I doubt I would be able to eat five pieces in a row. Maybe the recipe has changed over the past 30-40 years or maybe my sweet has grown up and evolved along with me. Even though we must all grow up, we still enjoy those fond memories locked away in our mind. Each year, the sights and sounds of the season recall a few from the vaults in our memories to remind us of “the good ol’ days”. Running around neighborhoods in your favorite costume, collecting as much candy as possible from the neighbors then dividing up candy with my younger brother at the end of the night. This was a ritual, until my younger brother got wise to my methods. As the older sister, we would “share” our bounty of candy splitting it “equally” in my

view. Let’s just same that I made a lot of great deals with my younger brother for the best candy bars in his bag… When it’s time for you to buy candy for the little ghouls and goblins in your family, here’s the top Best and Worst candies for the season: BEST RATED CANDY 1. A Quick Look into the Making of the September 2015 Today & Tonight Magazine Cover By Loren Spangler Photos By Mike Potthast To promote the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival, Today & Tonight Magazine; Polk County’s premier Entertainment Magazine, chose the event for its September issue cover. The idea for the Vintage Legends photo shoot came from Publisher Chris Douglas, and featured a 1927 Dodge Brothers four-door sedan and a 1934 Aerial 350cc motorcycle owned by Tom and Peggy Kerr. The flapper attired model was Jordan Smith. The story of the Dodge Brothers cover car begins in 1980, in Hershey, Pennsylvania at the AACA National Fall Meet. “I saw Peggy pointing at one of the entries,” says

Tom. “Hey,” she exclaimed. “Look at that neat old car.” In response, Tom nodded and continued to tour while his wife stayed behind. “When I saw her later, she told me she had made a purchase…the 1927 Dodge Brothers, Series 126 sedan that had caught her eye.” “The family who owned it needed money for a hospital bill and had to sell. So, I made a deal,” Peggy stated. “Dodge Brothers made the Series 126 for three months,” says Tom. “You can tell by its long wheelbase and extended roof that forms a sun visor.” The vintage car, which rolled off the assembly line in January-February 1927, was featured in the Dodge Story Book, confirmed by its original license plate (of which Tom still has).

During restoration, Tom removed the body and started from the frame up. “It had been hit in the rear and we repaired it.” During this time, Peggy chose to remove the black paint that covered the wheel spokes and steering wheel…a job that she thought would only be a weekends’ work, but ended up taking a year. For her effort, she was rewarded with beautiful wood underneath. For the final, finishing touch, Tom had an artist from the Smithsonian (gold) pen stripe the blue enamel paint that seems to change color from every angle. Peggy commented that restoring an antique car is all consuming. “It’s a labor of love,” she says. “But I would never do it again.” “One night, on the way back from an auto show, I was stopped by the Winter Haven Police for having one tail

light,” Tom said. “I told the officer that in 1927, vehicles were manufactured with only a single light which also served as a mount for the license plate. She decided to let me go.” Also featured on the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival cover was a 1934 Arial “Red Hunter” motorcycle. Designed by the firm’s chief designer, Val Page in 1932, it featured an overhead valve engine with distinctive red painted petrol and oil tanks, and mounting brackets for a side car. “I first saw the motorcycle in England,” says Tom. “It had been abandoned in a vacant field; the fenders were rusted through, gas tank dented, and the H-bar suspension was bent…damage that occurred when it had made contact with a WW-2 German butterfly bomb.” After obtaining the bike from its owner; shipping it back to the United States, and then restoring it to its original condition, the Ariel won Best In Show (Riding Through History), in St. Augustine, FL. When Peggy was asked about Tom’s passion for motorcycles, her reply was that he rode motorcycles back when they were dating. “We used to have fourteen of them. Now we are down to only seven,” she says. Tom said his first motorcycle ride occurred overseas in 1957 when he was in the Air-Force…resulting in a wreck. At the age of seventy-eight, Tom still restores and races antique motorcycles. His track ride is a classic 1949 Vincent Comet. He is enthusiastic, healthy, positive about life, and looks a decade younger than his age. “I am the oldest vintage motorcycle racer in the U.S.,” he says proudly. The term flapper describes a breed of women in the 1920s with a carefree persona, extreme makeup and clothes, and having an affinity for jazz music. They were attractive, independent, and drove automobiles. On the night of the cover photo shoot, model Jordan Smith represented such a character and performed her role flawlessly.

POP OFF By Double T

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. . . Did We Burn Our Bras For This! So many young people told me about “Fifty Shades of Grey” and how I just had to read it, so I went to buy a copy. As with all books I read the back cover first. “Oh, hell no,” I said to myself. This bestseller is about an abused boy turned OCD S.O.B who gets a virgin to sign a contract to have dominant/submissive sex with him and she does. WE HAVE NOT COME A LONG WAY, BABY! As a product of the late 60s, early 70s, we are the generation who brought you the idea of “free sex” (though it is very costly, so I apologize for that.) Yet, this isn’t free sex, this is bondage. Again, I ask, did I burn my 34B for this? In those days one thing we fought for was not to be objectified as sexual possessions. There is no grey area there. Back to the book, I gave it the benefit of the doubt, and read a few pages. I thought maybe she writes as well as Jackie Collins (who really does). I never want to be judgmental. Popping off is very different than being judgmental. It’s just popping off about universally annoying things. It’s fun. However this month, I’m going to be judgmental. I did research. Other critics also said it was written poorly. One referred to it as “Mommy Porn” because the audience to this was married women with young children. Gasp! No wonder anyone seems to notice human trafficking is so wrong. How can this be a bestseller? How could we have gone so far backwards in civil rights?

Again, trying not to be judgmental I asked a young person her thoughts. Several in fact used the word “empowering” for women. They said it was because the virgin got to make the choice. Oh, my, we have failed as a parenting generation. That is the same logic prostitutes and strippers use when they say they are choosing to use their bodies how they want to use them. It is not empowering. It is fleeting. It is exhibiting a beautiful body to appeal to a male’s primitive nature and emblazoning women as sexual objects ever stronger in society’s brains. A writer acquaintance challenged me by saying maybe I was just jealous I had not written it. I replied, “That would be true if this were a dumb song like Achy Breaky Heart, but no, I don’t wish I had written this.” Of course I wish I had the royalty check, but let’s take a reality check. Yes, it’s just my opinion, but ladies, please take back your dominion! Submission is an omission of your humanity. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com OCTOBER 2015

HALLOWEEN PUSH PLAY-LIST A mix of must-play Halloween tunes

By Anastasia Zivic Settle in with your Pumpkin Spice Latte, October’s theme is dedicated to all things that go bump in the night – the creepy, kooky, mysterious and downright chilling! Whether you prefer classic horror, scares and kitsch or the odd gem, this monthly mix brings a ghoulish appeal to get you in the Halloween mood. 10. WARREN ZEVON

Werewolves of London Excitable Boy, 1978) Another reminder of everyday monsters, you’re certain to howl along with the perfect three-chord progression produced by Jackson Browne and accompanied by Mick Fleetwood and John McVie of Fleetwood Mac and the seminal Waddy Watchtel.

28

OCTOBER 2015

9. BLUE OYSTER CULT

Don’t Fear the Reaper (Agents of Fortune, 1976) This classic tune speaks to the inevitability of death and the sad romance of eternal love, but no one blames you for thinking Christopher Walken and calling out for more cowbell as you listen. 8. TALKING HEADS

Psycho Killer (Talking Heads: 77, 1977) With lyrics representing the thoughts of a serial killer, delivered by one of the strangest fellows to come from the wave of ‘70s New York punk rockers, Talking Heads’ Psycho Killer cautions you to run away – far away, and you’ll be convinced. 7. RAMMSTEIN

Sonne (Mutter, 2001) Although actually about the light of the sun, and originally written as an entrance

song for a boxer, when sung in German, Sonne by Rammstein is as creepy as they come. 6. MINISTRY

(Every Day Is) Halloween (Single, Wax Trax, 1984) For the freak in all of us, (Every Day Is) Halloween speaks to those who may stand out in one way or another, but reminds us that we’re all the same. We’re all the same to a great dance beat. 5. CUSSES

Don’t Give In (Cusses, 2012) This Savannah, GA female-fronted altrock trio hit a home run with this captivating release and a riveting music video to match. Be bewitched. 4. DANIEL JOHNSTON

Devil Town (1990, 1990) Kurt Cobain wore a t-shirt with his album artwork and photos of the grunge rocker asking “Hi, How Are You” thrust Daniel Johnston into cult icon status. Much like Cobain, Johnston’s music and story reek of eerie heartbreak, and the song Devil Town is no exception. 3. MARILYN MANSON

Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (Smells Like Children, 1995) The synth-heavy breakout song of the Brit-pop duo the Eurythmics was turned from androgynously compelling into something wonderfully macabre by Florida’s own shock rockers Marilyn Manson. Also dubbed the “scariest music

video ever made”, this song is sure to send shivers up your spine, and you’ll like it. 2. BOBBY “BORIS” PICKETT AND THE CRYPT-KICKERS

Monster Mash (The Original Monster Mash, 1962) It doesn’t get more kitschy – or wonderful – than the ultimate Halloween classic. Fun for the whole family; enjoy listening to the many cover versions recorded by numerous artists such as The Beach Boys, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Manheim Steamroller and The Smashing Pumpkins. 1. MICHAEL JACKSON

Thriller (Thriller, 1982) Thriller, because Thriller. And Vincent Price. But, Thriller. READER’S CHOICE: CLASSICS IV

Spooky — Chris “Wiley” Widner, Winter Haven NOTEABLE MENTIONS: Rockwell – Somebody’s Watching Me Donovan – Season of the Witch Ray Parker, Jr. – Ghostbusters Nina Simone – I Put a Spell on You Golden Earring – Twilight Zone AC/DC – Highway to Hell Van Halen – Runnin’ With the Devil The Misfits – Halloween The Ramones – Pet Sematary Danny Elfman – This is Halloween

PARTY PERFECT TRENDS… SO SIMPLE IT’S SCARY! The biggest trend for 2015 Halloween parties is the interactive treat station providing party guests with both a yummy treat and hours of “sweet” entertainment. This strategy also takes some of the pressure off the hostess allowing guests to personalize their treats with an array of great options. Make sure you dedicate an area with easy clean-up to the dessert station as these ideas can get a little messy. Also, look for cute paper labels or stickers for identifying toppings. Guests love the extra theme additions and the station can also double as Halloween décor. You will need plenty of bowls or decorative vessels for the different toppings and mix-ins – checkout local thrift stores for bargains. By Erica Smith

Caramel Apple WOW Bar

Purchase pre-made caramel sauce (or make your own with the recipe below) and keep warm in a slow cooker (keep on warm or low). Slice Granny Smith apples into wedges or provide whole apples for take home treats. Provide guests with Popsicle sticks, skewers or natural stick for dipping. You can also provide bowls for guests who want a larger amount of caramel for dipping. Arrange a variety of toppings in separate bowls. Be sure to have plenty of napkins on hand for spills. You can also add another slow cooker with white chocolate candy melts for a final deluxe drizzle. Here are some great ideas for theme-ing apple toppings: Take Me Out the Ballgame: peanuts and caramel popcorn Jason’s Favorite S’mores: marshmallows, graham cracker crumbs, mini chocolate chips Sweet as Apple Pie: cinnamon, sugar, granola Creature from the Black Lagoon: toasted coconut flakes, dried pineapple and mango bits The Haunted Forest: trail mix or chopped dried fruit and berries, white chocolate chips Bottom of the Halloween Candy Bucket: assorted candy corn and crumbled candy bars Jack-o’-lantern: cover with orange Reese’s pieces and use yellow ones to make a face Gator vs Noles: arrange colored sprinkles in the team’s colors and see what bowl empties first Cookies & Screams: crushed Oreos and white chocolate drizzle

Pop-tastic Popcorn Bar

This station is really easy if purchasing pre-popped popcorn from the grocery store! Arrange a large market basket or tub with napkins or towels and then Layer in the popcorn. Be sure to provide paper cones or bags for guests to mix their personal favorites. Arrange bowls with mix-ins including savory and sweet options. Another variation is to include different types of popcorn for mixing including buttered, cheese and caramel. To take this station over the top, include a slow cooker with melted white chocolate candy melts for a final drizzling. Mix-in ideas: A variety of savory spice mixes including cayenne and chili powder for a kick. Inexpensive popcorn

salt mixes are available online and at specialty grocery stores. Ranch dressing mix is also a great choice Nuts – peanuts, toasted walnuts, cinnamon pecans, slivered almonds Chocolate M&M’s – peanut and plain Reese Pieces Gummi bears or Gummi Worms Dried cranberries Candy Corn Nerds candy bits Chocolate chips and Butterscotch chips Pretzels Fruit Loops and other kiddy cereal favorites Mini marshmallows

Devilishly Deceptive Cake Pop Bar

This idea is so simple but guests will love the interactive dips and toppings. Buy a several dozen assorted donut holes and mound on a cloth covered table like a giant mountain (the bigger the mound, the better). Provide plenty of skewers for dipping donut holes into melted candy melts (white chocolate is the easiest- use a slow cooker set to warm). Arrange a variety of mini toppings such as sprinkles, chocolate jimmies, mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts and colored sugars. Look for flavored dessert syrups like strawberry or raspberries for a final drizzle. Encourage guests to dunk their donut holes in the melted chocolate and decorate. You can also use fruit and Halloween Ghost “Peeps” to make a deluxe layered skewer. Thread candy and fruit onto the skewers in advance and then guest and add the donut hole to the top before dipping.

Monster Sundae Bar

This idea is a new twist on a very old concept but who doesn’t like a gigantic bowl of ice cream with unlimited toppings? Have vanilla ice cream ready for dipping (most grocery stores carry a large

economy tub of vanilla ice cream. You can use a large punchbowl for displaying the ice cream over a bed of ice. Instead of traditional toppings, mark these “mix-ins” with delightfully disgusting Halloween labels: Witches Warts: Chocolate chips Monster Nails: Almonds or Cashews Monster Scabs: Frosted Flakes or any crunchy toasted cereal Green Goblin Slime: Marshmallow topping tinted green with food coloring Monster Snot: Warm Caramel Sauce Bloody Goo: Strawberry sauce or melted jam Monster Toe Jam: Chopped peanuts mixed with a little caramel sauce Rat Bones: Broken pretzel sticks Rotten Bloody Eyeballs: maraschino cherries Ghost Poop: mini marshmallows Scarecrow Guts: chopped candy corn

Scarecrow Teddy Crunch

Assemble separate bowls of the following yummy treats (you will need to have plenty of spoons on hand for each bowl): Crunchy Oatmeal Cereal Squares Tiny Twist Pretzels Autumn Mix Mallow Candy (pumpkins and candy corn mix) Peanut Butter M&M’S Caramel Popcorn or Caramel Popcorn Mix Chocolate Teddy Grahams Provide guests with small bags or bowls and allow them to mix and match their perfect crunch mix. Be sure to have plenty of decorative scarecrows on display along with a mix of fall leaves. Fake silk crows are also available at most craft stores – perch the crows on the side of the mix-in bowls for an extra effect.

Make Your Own Caramel Sauce

1 cup butter 2 cups packed brown sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract In a heavy 3-qt. saucepan, combine butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and milk; bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook and stir until mixture reaches 248° (firm-ball stage) on a candy thermometer, about 30-40 minutes. Remove from the heat; stir in vanilla. Insert wooden sticks into apples. Dip each apple into hot caramel mixture; turn to coat. Set on waxed paper to cool. Yield: 8-10 apples.

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was noted author and Nobel laureate Ernest Hemingway who made the following sage observation: “Never think that war, no matter how justified, is not a crime. Ask the infantry and ask the dead.” He would know; he volunteered as an ambulance driver on the Italian front during World War I. • Poets, take note: The words “orange,” “month,” “purple” and “silver” have no rhyming words in English. • Historians say that Queen Victoria didn’t like knocking at doors; she preferred scratching. • If you’re interested in space, you are probably aware that the second person to walk on the moon was Buzz Aldrin. Most likely, though, you didn’t know that his mother’s maiden name was Moon. Aldrin kept this fact a secret from NASA -- he was evidently concerned that his bosses would think he was somehow trying to gain favor. • It’s been reported that in the early days of the Christian church, forks were considered to be inappropriate. • Those who study such things say that deep-sea anglerfish mate for life -- the male’s life, anyway. The female is much larger than the male, and when they mate the male attaches himself to her abdomen – where he remains, living as a parasite, until he dies.
