T

hose who’ve followed Keller Williams’ recording career to date know that he has given each of his albums a single-syllable title: FREEK, BUZZ, SPUN, BREATHE, LOOP, LAUGH, HOME, DANCE, STAGE, GRASS, DREAM, TWELVE, LIVE, ODD, THIEF, KIDS, BASS, PICK, FUNK, and most recently, VAPE (released April 20, 2015). Each title serves not only as a concise summation of the concept guiding the particular project but also as another piece of the jigsaw puzzle that is Keller Williams. GRASS, for example, is a bluegrass recording, cut with the husband-wife duo the Keels. STAGE is a live album and DREAM the end product of a wish list: Keller collaborating with some of his greatest musical heroes. THIEF is a set of unexpected cover songs. And KIDS offers up, you guessed it, Williams’ first and possibly only children’s record. The naming trend continued with 2012’s BASS and PICK, respectively a set of songs where Keller plays bass and William’s collaboration with royal bluegrass family The Travelin’ McCourys. With VAPE, released in April 2015 – Keller celebrates his 20th official album release. What all of the titles reveal, when taken together, is an artist of great stylistic breadth and infinite imagination, a singer, songwriter and musician, always on a quest for the new. Keller Williams has never followed the prescribed path laid out by the conventional music business, nor has

he taken the prescribed meds laid out by his team of conventional doctors. Instead, he has taken the A.D.D. path (Artistic, Determined, Dedication). It’s a path that has served him quite well. Since he first appeared on the scene in the early ’90s, Williams has defined the term independent artist. And his recordings tell only half the story. Keller built his reputation initially on his engaging live performances, no two of which are ever alike. For most of his career he has performed solo. His stage shows are rooted around Keller singing his compositions and choice cover songs, while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. With the use of today’s technology, Keller creates samples on the fly in front of the audience, a technique called live phrase sampling or looping, With nothing

pre-recorded, the end result often leans toward a hybrid of alternative folk and groovy electronica. A genre Keller jokingly calls “acoustic dance music” or ADM.” That approach, Williams explains, was derived from “hours of playing solo with just a guitar and a microphone, and then wanting to go down different avenues musically. I couldn’t afford humans and didn’t want to step into the cheesy world of automated sequencers where you hit a button and the whole band starts to play, then you’ve got to solo along or sing on top of it. I wanted something more organic yet with a dance groove that I could create myself.” Williams’ solo live shows—and his ability to improvise to his determinedly quirky tunes despite the absence of an actual band—quickly became the

stuff of legend, and his audience grew exponentially when word spread about this exciting, unpredictable performer. Once he began releasing recordings, starting with 1994’s FREEK, Williams was embraced by an even wider community of music fans, particularly the jam band crowd. While his live gigs have largely been solo affairs, Williams has nearly always used his albums as a forum for collaborations with fellow musicians. An alliance with The String Cheese Incident on 1999’s BREATHE marked Williams’ first release on the band’s label SCI Fidelity Records, an imprint he still partners with today for recordings. DREAM, Keller’s 2007 release, found him in the company of such iconic musicians as the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir, banjo master Béla Fleck, bass great Victor Wooten, American musician/poet Michael Franti and many others. “That album took, from start to release time,” says Williams, “about three years. The object was to get people that I admire musically to play my stuff, so when I’m old I can crank this album in my pimped-out golf cart and have something that I’m really proud of. I was going for the historical effect for my own personal listening pleasure. “Each record,” he continues, “is a little snapshot of history. I like to think of it as a period piece for an artist. Each record is a little bit different but all of them have some kind of common thread, which is my musical ability as far as I can take it. I

enjoy making records. In some people’s eyes, they’re a dying breed, but I’m very passionate about it. They document where my head is at that time in my career and where I am in my songwriting.” Williams’ story begins in Fredericksburg, Virginia, just south of Washington, D.C. There he was exposed to a wide variety of music at an early age, starting with country and bluegrass and working his way up through hip-hop and go-go, a brand of funk particular to that part of the country. Once he began playing guitar, Williams’ sphere expanded to what he calls “the post-pseudo-skateboarder punk-rock rebellious type of thing, Black Flag and Sex Pistols and Ramones, Dead Kennedys, things like that. That slid into the more melodic college rock, like the Cure and the Cult, the Smiths, R.E.M.’s first five or six records.” Then came the Grateful Dead, a seminal influence on Williams’ own music. “I studied and learned their music and went to the shows,” he says, adding that the impact of Jerry Garcia on his attitude toward music remains incalculable. Another major influence was Michael Hedges, the late virtuoso acoustic guitarist. “He was really excelling in a whole different world from what I knew,” says Williams. After relocating to Colorado, further exposure to bluegrass music and progressive acoustic artists such as Béla Fleck and the Flecktones also had a major impression on Williams. As he began to develop his own distinctive compositional and performing style, Williams incorporated all of the lessons he’d learned from the long list of artists who’d found their way into his world, then filtered their music through his own experiences until something wholly unique emerged. The list of artists whose music he has covered either in concert or on his recordings constitutes a mind-blowing spread: songs originally performed by everyone from Pink Floyd and Ozzy Osbourne to Ani DiFranco and old-school rappers the Sugar Hill Gang! When he first started out, Williams played in regional bands but also performed as a solo artist, “me sitting on a stool playing covers, like a happy hour situation,” he says. “I’d get dinner and maybe tips. There were bands in high school and in college. But it turned out I could get the same money playing solo that I was getting with the band. Around that time I was also doing temporary jobs and I was making the same amount playing music as I was scraping mortar out of the cracks of cinder block walls for eight hours in the summertime at minimum wage. So it seemed like the obvious choice was to play music. I started to work and over the years I incorporated more technology. The looping thing started to happen and tickets were sold and people came to shows, so there wasn’t any reason to fix something that wasn’t broken.” What Williams calls “the looping thing” is actually a big part of what has made him such a compelling live performer. “Basically, I have these machines that are essentially delay units,” he explains. “What

I do is step on a button and sing or play something. Then I step on the same button in time and it repeats what I just played or sang. Once that initial loop is created, I can layer on a bass line or a drum line and then have this layer that I just created in front of an audience that I could sing over and solo over. Nothing is pre-recorded. Everything is created onstage in front of the audience.” If it sounds complicated, it is: but the basic thrust is that the technology has allowed Williams to go out on tour week after week, year after year, and play music by himself—without limiting his sound to what we most often associate with the solo singer-songwriter: a guy strumming a guitar and singing. With his arsenal of tech toys, Williams can expand his reach onstage by, in essence, jamming with himself. But these days, Keller also performs often with live humans. The summer of 2010 found Keller sharing a bus with two of his biggest heroes, former Grateful Dead drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, as a member of their powerhouse assemblage the Rhythm Devils. “That was a very surreal experience,” Williams says.

“We rehearsed for a few days and then we were on a bus with 12 people, two of them being the original drummers from the Grateful Dead.” In 2013 and 2014, Keller also performed with Dead bassist Phil Lesh as part of Phil & Friends. Williams has also toured as part of a string trio with singer/guitarist Larry Keel and his wife, singer/bassist Jenny Keel, hitting key stops on the bluegrass festival circuit. And he has a band of his own, with Keller on rhythm guitar and vocals, Jeff Sipe on drums, Keith Moseley on bass and Gibb Droll on lead guitar. They toured throughout the spring of 2007 to the fall of 2008, and subsequently released a double live record with a companion DVD. In true Keller Williams fashion, it’s called Live. If it seems as if this is a man who never stops, that would be about right. Keller released the amusingly titled THIEF—his all-covers project with the Keels—early in 2010, and KIDS, his sixteenth album, in the fall of that same year. A father of two himself, Williams was, of course, inspired by his own offspring but, he says, some of the songs were written before his children were born. “When Not For Kids Only by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman came out,

I knew that there was hope for me with kids music,” he says. “I was really attached to that record.” The songwriting for Kids, Keller says, “was not necessarily singing to the kids. A lot of it was me singing from the perspective of the kids. That was my plan, to get on their wavelength, on their level, and be one of them, so it’s kind of like one of their friends singing to them.” In 2011, BASS found the multiinstrumentalist only playing bass guitar. BASS was also the first album to be recorded with Keller’s live reggae-funk band Kdubalicious, which in addition to Keller on bass and vocals, features Jay Starling on keyboards and Mark D on drums. On the other end of the spectrum – but just as tasty – is Keller’s 2012 release PICK. This collaboration featuring Keller Williams with The Travelin’ McCourys is a classic case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts—although the parts are rather massive on their own, to be sure. “Performing with The Travelin’ McCourys is one of my favorite things to do in the world,” Keller explains. “This project has struck a special chord with me [pun intended]. It is very addictive.” Indeed, Keller always enjoys working with a band. In 2014 he stepped out with his 6-piece funk band dubbed More Than a Little, which draws from the Richmond, VA R&B/gospel scene including a pair of show stealing female singers. The resulting album, FUNK, is a sexy live recording that pays deep homage to the genre’s roots. Today, Williams is gearing up and touring in support of his 22nd official album release, KWahtro. This particular version of KWahtro features his old friend and levitational guitar player, Gibb Droll, who joined in on the 2008 release, LIVE, and boasts collaborations with Brandi Carlisle and Bruce Hornsby, “the precisely groovy” Danton Boller on acoustic upright bass and “the rhythmic genius” Rodney Holmes, who traveled the world with Carlos Santana, will be holding it all together on drums as they, “attempt to float on acoustic goodness.” And as if all of this doesn’t keep him busy enough, Keller’s thirst for music of all kinds has also led him to the world of radio. For the past several years he has hosted Keller’s Cellar, a weekly syndicated program available on both terrestrial stations and online at www.kellerwilliams. net. Williams describes the show as “a selfindulgent, hour-long narrated mix tape of stuff I’m into. It’s rule-less except for what the FCC says we can’t do. I don’t play contemporary country music. I don’t play contemporary Christian music—however, there is possibly some old gospel. I don’t play opera. Everything else is fair game. World music from all around—African music from all the countries, jazz, funk, reggae, techno, chill, lounge, lounge singers, rub-a-dub, dancehall. I pretty much stay away from smooth jazz. It’s definitely a fun outlet for me. I’m trying to do something different.”Something different. That, we can assume, is how it will always be with Keller Williams. Catch Keller Williams at Jessie’s Lounge in Winter Haven on Friday, October 14, 2016. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at kellerwilliams.net or eventbrite.com.

BRIAN’S BRAIN

By Brian Bruchey

What Are The Odds I am amazed that I am still alive, and that I’m not laid up in my house with some kind of disease, syndrome, or disorder. I see commercials on TV frequently, and hear news stories on the radio daily, and basically, I’m left wondering, “How have I survived 46 years?” Consider this, one in four Americans have high blood pressure. The trick in making sure I’m not going to wind up being that one in four is for me to hang around with three other people who are fatter than me, and have way more stressful jobs than I have. I find it difficult making sure I don’t get high blood pressure. Sometimes, the experts say eating eggs and butter is good for you, then they say it’s bad for you, and then good again. I can’t keep track. I seriously doubt the experts really know what they’re talking about. I have my own hypothesis. Eating greasy foods is good for your blood pressure. It only makes sense. Think about it…if you have grease on the floor, and you step on it, you’re going to slip. Grease in your veins is just going to lube up your blood cells, and it’s not going to require much pressure to keep your blood flowing. Duh! It’s science!!! Driving statistics are scary too. One in every 14,000 people will be involved in a fatal car crash. Sometimes, it feels like I pass 14,000 cars every time I drive to Orlando on I-4. If my wife is driving, 14,000 cars pass us. Either way, from now on, I’m counting all of the cars, and when we get to 13,500, I’m pulling over. Cancer is a big one. I believe I read that one million Americans get cancer each year. And of those one million, half of them will die. And there are so many types of cancer… it’s like a smorgasbord of tumors. If I was a smart man, I would have married a woman born between June 20 and July 22nd. That way I could stake my claim to a Cancer that could help pay the bills, take care of me when I’m sick, and fold our fitted sheets (which I absolutely

have no clue how to do). Marrying a Cancer would be far better than having a cancer that would destroy my organs. And as an added bonus, when I introduce her to new people I can say, “This is my wife…she’s a Cancer, but don’t worry, she’s benign…most of the time.” People tell me often that there is something wrong with my head… specifically, my mind. I usually take that as a compliment. I heard that one in every 100 people has bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, one in every seven people suffer from depression. That’s just crazy talk. The odds of me getting struck by lightning this year is one in 700,000. If I go to a hockey game in Tampa, and tell one of the players that his momma is so ugly that even Ripley wouldn’t believe it, the odds of me getting struck, punched, kicked, and beaten by Lightning is pretty much a certainty. I’ve even wondered how likely it is that one day, I’ll be caught in a huge machine and get split right down the middle. It truly frightens me, even though I don’t work around huge machines. I guess if it only cut off my left side, I would be all right. What are my odds of making it through life without anything catastrophic ever happening to me? Is it even odd to think of such a thing? Would the odds be even, or odd? And is this whole thing even oddly considered?

Pushing the Culinary Envelope

Slicing Jamon Iberico (Cured Ham) for the Charcuterie Plate Served with Chorizo and Variety of Spanish Cheeses with Mixed Olives.

18 OCTOBER 2016

By Amy Sumerlin Photos By Tina Sargent My husband and I made a mistake when we tried the hot new restaurant in Lakeland, Nineteen61: We didn’t make a reservation. Luckily, it was a weeknight and they were able to squeeze us in, but you might not be so lucky. We got there right when the doors opened, and the place, which only has about four booths and maybe ten tables, quickly filled up. Oh, and by the way: What looks like the front door is not a front door. Drivers along Florida Ave, who already knew this, probably got a giggle or two from me trying to enter that way. Enter through the back. While the restaurant is not yet a year old, the owner/chef, Marcos Fernandez, is not new to Lakeland; he was the Executive Chef at the Lakeland Yacht Club for four years. He spent those four years – and multiple years before that (some of his experience includes time working in Lima, Peru; at a Denver restaurant group (a French restaurant); and at the Maggiano’s Little Italy chain) -- developing his personal culinary style. “I love pushing the envelope with my menus,” Fernandez said, as he explained that he enjoys mixing styles and techniques from different cultures. Even the Ropa Vieja ($24) I enjoyed that night

mixes Cuban and Italian cuisine, because he mixes the delightful, slowbraised flank steak, espagnole, sherry, peppers, and onions with risotto – the epitome of Italian home cooking. He believes this adaptation of cooking styles is a nod of respect to his parents, Cuban emigrants who are now American citizens. “When they came here, they had to learn to adapt everything – their way of life, their cooking styles,” he said, proudly. Appropriately, the name “Nineteen61” represents the year his parents immigrated to the United States. We started that night with the Pan con Queso ($11): knowing it had chorizo (one of my favorites) is what made me order it, but it was the goat cheese and house romesco, all artfully presented on ciabatta bread, that will make me order it again. But not next time, which is when I will dive in and taste the Pulpo (Octopus) ($17). I admit, I was hesitant to try it: but diners around me were singing its praises, and they’re not alone: Nineteen61 goes through 30 pounds of octopus each week! Another dish I will try is the Paella Mariscos ($40). This may sound a bit pricey, but it is heaven in a dish for the seafood lover: Lobster tail, shrimp, clams, calasparra, and chorizo. FARM TO TABLE Back about two years ago, Fernandez was approached by Lakelander Magazine with a proposal: They wanted him to create the menu, and of course do the cooking, for a Farm to Table event. The rules were strict: Everything

served had to come from local farmers, no more 50 miles away. “I had never before embraced the Farm to Table concept,” he began, but the process opened his eyes. He found local pig farmers, local honey, local chicken farmers, even local duck farmers. “I had such a fun time with this, and everything was great, simply because it was so fresh.” The event was such a success that Fernandez continues to embrace the concept at Nineteen61. Everything is made from scratch there, with the exception of the Cuban bread, which is still sourced locally. “We make our own bacon, our own sausage…we utilize the entire pig, so nothing goes to waste.” The result is fabulous, and when it is teamed with the upscale-yet-cozy atmosphere, it’s going to become a place you think of first for special occasions. The couple next to us, in fact, was celebrating their anniversary.

coconut ($8); the Crema Catalana ($6), which was quite light and refreshing; and Cheesecake ($8), with a seasonal topping. I knew the desserts would be fabulous from the beginning, because there was a lovely lady sitting next to us who had apparently saved most of her meal for later (she had a box), but

was eating every inch of her key lime pie. “I get this every time I come,” she said. FMI: Nineteen61, 1212 S. Florida Ave., Lakeland; 863-688-1961 Open 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; Sunday brunch, 10 am to 2pm.Closed Monday.

THE WINE Nineteen61 does not yet have a liquor license, but I thought the wine and beer list – including craft beers – was quite respectable. Additionally, wine lockers are available. You can “rent” your own wine locker for a year, three years or five years and supply it with wines you buy through the restaurant. He has obviously hit on something popular with this: they are all currently rented out: “Some may become available in December,” he said. THE DESSERT Nineteen61 serves three desserts: a deconstructed key lime pie with

Pulpo (Octopus) served with Plancha Charred Kalamata Caramel, Kalamata Aioli, Roasted Chorizo Potatoes, Chimichurry and Sweet Potato Chips.

Chickens For Change The Chicken Chronicles Continue… The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. — H. L. Mencken Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself. — Mark Twain All politicians should have 3 hats one to throw into the ring, one to talk through, and one to pull rabbits out of if elected. — Carl Sandburg When our backyard flock was first established, we were quick to learn that chickens have a very rigid political structure complete with a very real “pecking” order. Yes, they peck the heck out of each other when looking for the best treats or trying to get the favorite position on the roosting bar. It is often painful to watch our flock leader Charlotte as she administers her punishments when one of the other hens steps out of line. However, just like politics, dominance is part of the game. The most interesting part of barnyard politics is how in the absence of a rooster, one hen will eventually become the leader. Charlotte naturally assumed the role (she is also the largest of the five hens) and provides protection for the other hens. She watches the sky for predators and alarms the rest of the flock when she senses danger. Charlotte is also the only one of our hens who has not experienced a period of broodiness, remaining the sole member of the flock to not succumb to the influence of Mother Nature. At twilight, our flock returns to their coop and each of them takes the same position on the roosting bar. Charlotte prefers the space nearest to the door and always sleeps next to her sister Scarlett. The yellow hens are then pushed to the side and huddle up near the window. Like a true politician, Charlotte assumes

the warmest and safest position. The three yellow hens are a month or two younger than Charlotte and Scarlett with their own sense of politics. Savannah is the runt of the group and she is the most pecked. Anna and Emily can be very aggressive and we have to intervene at night, rearranging them on the nesting bar into the proper order. Internal power struggles are usually only seen when the chickens want the same nesting box. We often walk into the coop and see Charlotte nesting on top of one of the other hens. As she is the ruler of the roost, she simply sits on top of whoever is sitting in the prize box and to lay her egg. We have four different nesting boxes, all at the same height and for some reason; each of the five girls wants to lay their egg in the same box. The fight over grapes is also the culprit for many different pecking challenges. During the summer, cold grapes are the treat of choice especially for Savannah who appears to have a sweet tooth (make that a sweet beak, as chickens do not have teeth). She is a fierce competitor when it comes to getting the biggest grape and will stand up to the larger hens, dodging and weaving like a prizefighter. Unlike American politics, the girls do work together to fend off predators. Recently, our neighbor’s cat was making her way through the yard and stumbled upon our girls in the middle of their morning treat. Like a team of ninjas, they circled the poor cat and started to cackle and crow loudly defending their territory. The poor cat was completely surrounded by the flock and was trembling with fear. Working together, the chickens were a ferocious team! I had to pick the poor cat up and walk him to safety. Goes to show you…never mess with girl power. BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist Gabriel Garcia Marquez who made the following sage observation: “Words are not created by academics in universities and suchlike; rather it is the man in the street who does so. Dictionary compilers almost always recognize them too late and embalm them in alphabetical order, in many cases when they have lost their original meaning.” • Those who study such things say that when faced with a crisis situation, the average woman tends to remain calmer than the average man. • You might be surprised to learn that the first printing press in North America was not anywhere within the present-day boundaries of the United States. The very first one was set up in Mexico City, back in 1539. • In the Talmud, a central text of Rabbinic Judaism, sneezing is called “pleasure sent from God.” • The largest single dormitory in the world is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. With 4.8 miles of corridors and providing 33 acres of floor space, Bancroft Hall provides a home for the school’s entire brigade of 4,000 midshipmen. • Many people harbor a fear of snakes (which, incidentally, is known as ophidiophobia), but venomous bites and constricting squeezes aren’t the only ways a snake can kill. For instance, in the 1990s a man in Iran, while trying to capture a snake, placed the butt of his shotgun against the snake’s neck behind its head. In attempting to escape, the snake wrapped the length of its body around the gun, pulling the trigger in the process -- and killing its would-be captor.

The Names of Paint Colors, Faucets, Mirrors and More If you are into home improvement you know exactly what I’m talking about. The names! The collections! Recently I went to look for shades of gray and there were way more than 50 and not so sexy. Web Gray. Steel Gray. Faster than Light Gray! Mark Twain Black! Help. There are only subtle little nuances of hues. How to choose? I decided the same way I choose nail polish colors; by name. Ladies, you know you won’t wear a nail polish shade name “Cotton Candy” or “Sugar Daddy” no matter how much you like the color. Gentlemen; yes, there are shades by those names along with “Say, I Do” and many more that would scare away the commitment phobic male. Now back to the names of wall paint. I chose colors named Aviatrix and Dovetail. I had to look up Aviatrix. As if I don’t have enough to do working and improving my home, I am improving my vocabulary, too. Aviatrix means woman aviator. Like it! I felt this sensation that a gray by any other name would not be the same. I liked Intuitive Gray. I saw a pattern. They were appealing to my interests. Women must be buying most of the paint. I noticed they did not have “Lumberjack Brown”, “Man Cave Beige” or “Dirty Socks on the Floor White”. You’re not going to see “WWF Yellow” or “John

Deere Green”. Those are the colors they sell in spray paint at Tractor Supply. I love that store! They sell air compressors for impatient men to paint faster, too! I also marveled at sink names and faucet monikers. For some reason most are named after people. “Bryant” sinks and “Lindsey faucets”. Male and female names for inanimate objects. Interesting. Even more interesting was that the wonderful people at the store were getting to know my name. They helped “Confused Mary” find things I didn’t know I needed. Remodeling became a psychological experiment. I discovered how much you could learn about yourself if you looked at the names of things you were attracted too. Many light fixtures also had people or place names. Things like Taylor and Safe Harbor Bay. Hmmmm. Who is making up these names? I want that job! (I really want the job of whoever decides what Siri says back to you if you ask her something ridiculous, but that’s for another day.) If you want a little extra fear in your Halloween season, see what you like and what it is called. What are the names? No wonder Stephen King named a predatory car “Christine”. That’s a good Halloween color. Crazy Christine Red!

PORCH JASON ALDEAN I get small little hints of excitement in my life that probably nobody but someone in my profession would understand. For example, while driving down the road and listening to my iPod on “shuffle,” I can hear a small guitar riff and know exactly WHO the artist is without even knowing the song. It’s a sound brand, so to speak and Jason Aldean definitely has it. I recently found out that Jason insists on recording with his live band instead of using Nashville studio musicians. To me, this makes his sound more consistent each time I hear him. For certain, his music has a distinct “sound” and that is so important. For years, it seems as Jason Aldean has been over looked at award shows as a powerhouse in country music. Perhaps the year he was finally noticed by the voters was the year that he was also caught cheating on his wife and mother of his children? The associations tend to look down on that behavior as a good representation of country music artists. Earlier this year, Jason Aldean finally won the illustrious Academy of Country Music (ACM) “Entertainer of the Year” award. However, the latest nominees for the Country Music Awards (CMA) came out, and Jason’s name was nowhere to be found. Aldean told the Seattle Times “It’s a little weird to me that you can win the highest honor that one award show has to offer and you can’t get a single nomination from the other.” It is frustrating and disappointing. You feel like you’re out there and that you’ve done well and you feel like you’ve got as good a shot as anybody of being there and you’re not.” In the past three years, he’s only been nominated for one award at the CMAs, which was album of the year for his last platinum-selling record, “Old Boots, New Dirt.” Like everything else in the world…politics…simply politics. 32 OCTOBER 2016

Push the awards aside, I believe it’s the fans that have the loudest voices, and Jason’s fans are LOUD! Aldean is one of the top touring acts in country music, selling out venue after venue. Jason recently notched his 17th Number One single with “Lights Come On” off his new album in stores, entitled “They Don’t Know.” “Lights Come On” is his debut single off his seventh studio album and his third to debut at the top of the Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart. As I started this article, I told you about Jason’s sound. In his latest album, I couldn’t hear any surprises from Jason. It’s classic scruffy, muscle, bad boy, Georgia native Jason. Though Rolling Stone magazine only gave Jason 2 out of 5 stars for “They Don’t Know,” if you are an Aldean fan, this album is for you because it’s Aldean music, it’s Aldean sound. His current single out is “A Little More Summertime,” it was released in late Summer (July) and it’s an appropriate song for the time of year we are in. The songs that stood out to me on his latest venture are “Bad,” “All Out of Beer,” “Whiskey’d Up” and “Any Ol’ Barstool.” (I had to laugh as I typed out those titles, definitely country music songs!) I’m a fan of classic Jason, I think it would be odd if his sound changed. It’s distinct, it’s raw, it’s real, it’s Jason… and I’ll take it. THE PINK PIANO 1015 Florida Ave S, Lakeland (863) 937-8885

T&T MAG: How long have you been a bartender? COURTNEY: 4 years T&T MAG: How long have you been at your current bar: COURTNEY: 1 year, 9 months T&T MAG: How did you become a bartender? COURTNEY: When I turned 21 I started hanging out at DC’s Sports Bar (ironically the bar that is now The Pink Piano), and fell in love with the place. I happened to be in need of a part time job while I finished up my degree, so I got to know the owners and they decided to give me a shot behind the bar. I trained for 2 weeks and the rest is history. T&T MAG: What is your favorite thing about your job? COURTNEY: Getting to sing with some of the talented musicians that perform at The Pink Piano. T&T MAG: What is one crazy thing you experience as a bartender? COURTNEY: Some of the stories my patrons share are pretty outrageous. T&T MAG: Your favorite drink to drink? It depends on the day, but my go-to is gin and tonic. T&T MAG: Your favorite drink to make? COURTNEY: I make a mean peach sangria! We use my recipe at The Pink Piano! T&T MAG: What is one thing the average person does not know about you? COURTNEY: I studied opera for 8 years and earned my bachelors degree in voice performance. Singing is my heart and soul.

T&T MAG: Name something on your bucket list? COURTNEY: To perform for a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden. T&T MAG: What do you do in your spare time? COURTNEY: Play music with my crazy talented boyfriend Josh, spend time with the people I love the most, and hang out with my cats. T&T MAG: Do you have any hobbies? COURTNEY: Darts, reading, playing my keyboard T&T MAG: Who are you inspired by? COURTNEY: My mom. She is the most genuine, accepting, kind-hearted person I know. T&T MAG: Pick one – Jazz, Blues, Metal, Folk? COURTNEY: Blues, hands down. T&T MAG: If you could pour a drink for anyone in the world, who would it be and why? COURTNEY: Stevie Nicks, because I absolutely adore her and her work with Fleetwood Mac. I can’t imagine the stories she has to tell and the advice she could give me. T&T MAG: Why should people come to your bar and have a drink? COURTNEY: We have a wonderful craft beer and wine selection, and the best variety of live music and good people in town! T&T MAG: In closing, you’d like to say? COURTNEY: If you haven’t been to The Pink Piano yet, you’re really missing out on something special. I am forever grateful for the people I’ve had the privilege of meeting and the magical music I’ve been lucky enough to experience and be a part of
