is the season o’pumpkin. A beautiful fruit that comes in many shapes and sizes. It’s used in everything from home décor at front doors to fireplace mantels to pumpkin bread, cheesecakes, cookies, muffins, soups – and of course, the traditional pumpkin pie! There are more than 30 varieties of pumpkins ranging in size from small to jumbo – a man in Germany just broke the world record in October with the largest pumpkin weighing in at 2,624 pounds. The average weight, though, is 6 to 18 pounds. I mean, who has the room for a 2,000 pound pumpkin! Pumpkins are a squash plant – a member of the gourd family. Among their cousins are cucumbers, melons, and zucchinis. Pumpkins are definitely the much better looking cousins… A whopping 90 percent of the pumpkins are sold in fours months: October to January. And it’s estimated that 3.7 million are sold at Halloween; for decorations and pumpkin pies. They are a hearty fruit that will last from 1 to 8 weeks, which makes them perfect for your fall décor. Colors also vary from the traditional, and most popular, orange to the green, white and brown tones. The non-traditional colors have become steadily more popular in the recent years for in-home décor, especially the white, brown and speckled hues. They are perfect to transition home décor from fall with Halloween and Thanksgiving to Christmas by adding in gold accents along natural materials and textures. Even if you do not buy a real pumpkin for your home to announce to the world “fall is here”, retailers will make sure that you get your pumpkin flavor fix from every turn of a grocery store’s aisle to coffee shops, restaurants and even our favorite mega-gas station-convenient stores are getting in on making the “green” from our favorite orange seasonal palette pleaser.

Richard’s Fine Coffees

This coffee shop also serves up breakfast and lunch. For the fall, they also have a great variety of pumpkin flavors for all ages: Pumpkin bread; available by the slice or the loaf, pumpkin cheese muffins, pumpkin special spice latte (served hot, iced or blended), herbal pumpkin spice tea AND pumpkin vanilla swirl ice cream – yummy! 330 Avenue A, NW, Downtown Winter Haven 33881

Slow Down, Thanksgiving is Coming to Town

It’s November, which means that Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Most of your responses would probably have been “Christmas is around the corner”. Also the same people that start decorating as soon as the last trick or treater rings their doorbell for a crumb of Halloween candy. I could not believe, this year, that a retired manufactured home community around the corner from me went into full Christmas decor mode before the Halloween decorations were put away into their boxes. A season for everyone, and for everyone a season. For me, November equals Thanksgiving. The coming together of friends and family to enjoy (hopefully) a perfect meal. No long list of holiday gifts to buy, just a grocery shopping list and the decisions if your meal will only consist of family-secret recipes OR do we ruffle some feathers by adding in a new dish or two this time around. We plan, we cook, we enjoy period! Well, there may be a little stress after the kitchen is totally destroyed, like a bomb went off, to make that said perfect meal. And we do eat way too much, but hey, it’s Thanksgiving and that’s the way it’s supposed to be! Thanksgiving also means the message of being thankful and grateful. On the top of MY list this year is that I am very grateful that the elections will

be over. Each night as I doze off in front of the TV the “his” and “her” political commercials drill into my brain bringing mud-slinging fights to bed with me. Ugh! This election season is definitely one for the books. In my opinion, the most obnoxious and most embarrassing in our nation’s history for BOTH sides. It’s caused a political PTSD for “we, the people”. Whether, by our precious Thanksgiving holiday, we have a Madame or Mister President - it’s done and over for another four years. Maybe this Thanksgiving while everyone is around the dinner table holding hands to say grace, add a little prayer in for our country to get back on track to greatness. Let’s remember better ways and better days, like the Pilgrims and the Indians. Coming together over a wonderfully cooked meal (to break bread) that is shared by friends, family and sometimes strangers makes the world seem a little nicer, a little happier - if only until that turkey is gone and the last slice of pumpkin pie is eaten. Happy Thanksgiving! May your meal be filled with peace and love; joyous times to make long-lasting memories. I wish you a perfectly cooked turkey, moist cornbread dressing and giblet gravy for all.

There are so many events and festivals going on there is no way I could mention them all. So, I encourage you to head over to our calender of events section and check out everything that’s happening. I will wrap up by saying... Let’s get out in the community and support it. Polk County has so much to offer and the people who offer it work very hard. Let’s support them this holiday season. Support local businesses and buy local as much as you can. As Always, Expect More, Get More, We Deliver. Happy Thanksgiving! Chris Douglas Publisher

Order it by the bowl; a cup is not enough of this luscious concoction that always leaves your mouth wanting more.

A fresh local and organic food concept that has an ever-changing menu and specials. Lang’s Café is a seasonally run business so, of course, they have to get their “pumpkin on” when time to re-open the first of October. PUMPKIN BEER

Look around and you will find some type of a holiday or seasonally inspired beer. Personally, my favorite is the Imperial Pumking beer. It’s got the cool bottle, label and of course the story on the back about the “pumking”. This beer, in my opinion, is the essence of the holidays jammed into a beer bottle. Take the Southern Tier’s advice, it’s best served in a goblet. I’ve tried it in the bottle, in the goblet and on draft – goblet wins every time. The spices tickle the nose and your senses however it’s not too sweet. But, buyer beware, this beer is 9% ABV so it can sneak up on you… Just Look Around

Supermarket Lovers of pumpkin pie rejoice each season as the Publix brand “limited edition” premium pumpkin pie ice cream makes its way back onto the shelves in the freezer section for the holidays. BRIAN’S BRAIN

By Brian Bruchey

Potty All The Time When ya gotta go, ya gotta go. And sometimes, you just have to go so bad, you have to utilize a restroom that you normally would steer clear from. I learned long ago, if a gas station has a sign out front that says, “Clean Restrooms”, chances are that sign is as full of crap as the toilet is when you walk in. Seriously…why do some people not flush when they’re done? Were you particularly proud of your work, and wanted to share it with others? Men have it better than women when it comes to public restrooms. Of course, we men have urinals that we could use for those quick pit stops, while women have to make the full commitment, and use a toilet. Not to mention that the clothes women wear can be more bothersome for potty breaks than men’s. A woman walks into a stall, having to pee, she walks in, and sees that the seat is really gross. She has a few options: 1. Place a seat cover or toilet paper on the seat. 2. Hover. 3. Just sit down, and try not to think about it. If a man has to pee, he goes into the men’s room, walks up to the urinal, and does what he has to do. No problem. But let’s throw a curveball into the scenario. Let’s say he walks in and sees a large puddle around the urinal. He has two options: 1. Step in the puddle, because hey, shoes. 2. Stand back several feet and let loose. Men are always up to that kind of a challenge, and besides, that’s probably how the puddle got there in the first place. Obviously, if a man has to do more than tinkle, he has to use a toilet just like a woman, and two of the three options are the same. Men don’t hover. Ever. Unless there are pine cones on the ground. I should use this time to issue a warning to men everywhere. If for some reason you have to pee into a toilet while standing up, lift up the seat first you barbarians. Any guy who dribbles on a toilet seat then leaves it, need to be shot. In the face.

With a cannonball. Twice. And ladies, I’m going to let you in on two secrets, so pay attention. Let’s say you’re out dining with your husband, or boyfriend, and he goes to the restroom. There’s a really good chance that he didn’t wash his hands before returning. It happens a lot. I am amazed at how many men walk out without washing their hands. And then there are some men who do stop at the sink, but just rinse, for maybe five seconds. With no soap. Yeah, that did a whole lot of good Mr Nasty Hands. The other tip for you ladies… never, ever touch the top of your husband’s or son’s shoes. You see, when a man uses a urinal, there can be some splash back. And that splash back will land on the top of his shoes. Keep that in mind if you ever help a little boy tie his shoes. Back to the restrooms. I have one more tip for everyone here, and you’ll definitely want to know this one, because I guarantee that it’s a good one. Especially, if you’re someone who travels a lot, or who has to use the restroom a lot. The next time you’re out on the highway, and the urge hits you, don’t go to a gas station or restaurant. Stop off at a hotel. It’s what I do, and it’s way better. Their restrooms in the lobby are rarely used, and are almost always super clean. And if it’s a really nice hotel, you could always tell people as you pass by it, “I stayed in that hotel once”. You don’t have to tell them it was for twenty minutes. hether you want to trick out your truck, add tint to your windows or install the best sound system for your vehicle, JC’s Customs does it all. The 40-year-old Winter Haven business is seeing record sales as it continues to provide what the customers demand. “More people are not wanting ordinary vehicles,” said Kevin Cheeseman, co-owner. The hot tech trends customers want include Wi-Fi, navigation systems, bluetooth, car

alarms, video systems, iPod connections and pumped up audio systems. JC’s Customs works with car dealerships, like adding tint to vehicles before they are sold, and directly with customers to re-style their car. JC’s Customs has also added marine audio to its portfolio. “We are living in the land of lakes,” said Cheeseman. “The trend is growing for sound systems (in boats).” More than 50 percent of the company’s customers are repeats. Donnie Jouppi has been a customer of JC’s Customs for 12 years. “They always treat you fair and stand by their work,” he said. JC’s helped Jouppi customize his Jeep with new wheels, bumpers and a lift kit. He also had JC’s tint the windows of his business, Performance Plus Carts, in Auburndale. “I’m a particular guy and you don’t have to worry about (their work),”

Jouppi said. “If it’s not right, they’ll make it right.” Fifteen years ago Cheeseman said his business changed. “The customers wanted us to expand our portfolio,” he said, adding that the company began with a main focus on window tinting and small vehicle accessories. “Our business plan is to adapt to the customer’s needs and be reactive to what they are asking for.” To keep up with the latest trends, Cheeseman and his co-owner Steve Burroughs attend trade shows, vendor training and classes. “In our business there are not a lot of certifications, so you have to work diligently with the manufacturers to keep on top of it,” said Cheeseman. Cheeseman, who worked for at JC’s Customs as a teenager, managed the company for a former owner and then he and his partner purchased it. Business is going strong, but it wasn’t always that way. When the recession hit in 2008, things were tough on the local economy. “We worked harder, stayed longer and limited our expenses,” Cheeseman explained. They got through it and never had to let go of an employee. In fact, many

employees have been there more than 15 years. The workers have different strengths with some focusing on accessories and others on tinting. Forty percent of their business is window tinting, which helps the car look better and addresses glare and heat issues. “We do what we need to do and take pride in that,” Cheeseman said. “We have the best customer relations and our installers understand the needs of the customer. We want to make sure we provide the finished product correctly. From the 16-yearold to the grandparent, we cater to all of their needs. We want people of all demographics to feel comfortable.” All of the work is done in the 10,000-square-

foot facility on 5th Street SW. The installation area is 6,000 square feet and the rest is for the show room and stock area. JC’s offers many accessories, such as bug shields, floor mats, lift kits, truck liners and many more. In fact, it’s just too many to list. Custom wheels and tire packages, trailer hitches and commercial vehicle outfitting are also a part of the company’s services. “We are one of Polk County’s largest and oldest automotive restyling companies and we establish relationships with our customers,” said Cheeseman.

ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).

By Erica Smith

Thankfulness Challenge I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual. — Henry David Thoreau Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings. —William Arthur Ward A few years ago, a friend of mine offered me a simple worksheet with one hundred blank lines and a headline that read “List One Hundred Things to Be Thankful For.” I politely folded the paper and stuffed it into my overflowing tote bag before rushing off to complete some ridiculous but necessary task. Ordinarily, papers like this get pushed to the bottom of the bag and remain hidden among a sea of catalogs, junk mail and magazines. But, this time, I was very mindful that failing to complete the black lines was a symbol of my lack of thankfulness. No matter how much stuff I added to the tote bag, the blank lines on the worksheet found their way to the top of the stack. I thought about throwing the worksheet away and shrugging the task off but the guilt was too much. My mind kept returning to the thought that with all of my blessings, why was I unwilling to take ten minutes and complete the worksheet? Finally, after much procrastination, I pulled out the crumpled sheet and started filling in blanks. Top of the list was my husband, our home, our families and quickly my pencil was fly-

ing through the lines. Next came a few selfish items like new furniture, technology and gifts. I moved into bigger items like health, financial security and

happy memories. Soon, the lines were completely filled but I had so much more to add to the list.

I started erasing previously penciled in thoughts and writing in new items. After going through an eraser, I drew in lines on

the back and quickly had them filled.

I asked my husband to com-

plete the same worksheet and

after a few days, he proudly presented his completed list. Like me, the task became an experiment in gratitude. Taking the

time to really think about thankfulness gave both of us a whole new perspective. We could be thankful for all the wonderful

blessings and concentrate on the positive instead of letting the

holiday stress lead to feelings of wanting more and more.

Now it is your turn to take the

challenge. Take a plain white

piece of paper and with a ruler, draw 100 empty lines and then write in your blessings…and

repeat. I promise you will experience the same great lightness

of spirit that comes from being truly thankful!

Wishing you and your

family the most wonderful Thanksgiving blessings! QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS info@todayandtonight.com

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was beloved Scottish author J.M. Barrie, creator of Peter Pan, who made the following sage observation: “Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.” • Among the Balonda people, an African tribe that dwells along the Zambezi River, it was once customary for a groom to promise that he’ll supply kindling wood to his mother-in-law for the rest of her life. • Those who study such things -- word mavens with a penchant for statistics, presumably -- have determined that, on average, English-language text contains 56 e’s for every q. • A fisherman in the Philippines recently revealed a treasure that he’d been keeping under his bed for 10 years: a 75-pound natural pearl with an estimated value of $100 million. Evidently, after finding the pearl in a giant clam, he decided to keep it as a good-luck charm. The “Pearl of Puerto,” as it’s known, blew the world record out of the water (pun intended). The previous record holder for largest natural pearl was the “Pearl of Lao-Tsu” (sometimes called the “Pearl of Allah”), which weighs in at a mere 14 pounds. • The female Jesus bird is the one in charge, it would seem. She controls her own territory, allowing several male birds to build nests within it. Then she lays eggs in all the nests, and the males incubate them.

The Debates

A lot of people don’t know when writers write a column, we have a deadline. When this was written, the election had not taken place yet, but by the time you read this they probably will have been decided. I don’t know who won the presidency, but I could take an educated guess. Perhaps like Lewis Black, political comedian suggested, we might not need a president. He was convinced of this and I will leave the expletives out, that since past presidents had been having affairs right there in the Oval Office and beyond, and nothing of consequence happened, why even have a president? It’s funny but of course not possible. Who else will there be to use fancy pens to sign executive orders that we know nothing about until we

get a tax bill? I did my best to watch all of the debates. Then I realized what I heard so many other people say. The system must be broken! We see two people up there fighting and slinging insults and assaults at each other. We have people acting like fourth graders in a sandbox fighting over who is going to take control of the GI Joe and Tonka toys running for president. There are human lives at stake here. Please stop fighting and offer solutions. They were yelling, talking over each other, blaming each other and casting aspersions on the other’s families. It wasn’t debating, it was battling? Battling for what? To become president, not a dictator! To become Commander-in-Chief, not to

bully each other. Send in the safety patrol and the principal, please. Make each of them write on a chalkboard 100 times, “I am running for president to serve the people, not myself.” Whatever happened to the term public servant? These are no longer public servants. The word republican came from France. Re-public. Give the government back to the control of the people not to the controlling child who just wants to be president so they can live in a big White House that we all pay for with servants! Let’s review! The word democracy came from Greece. It comes from a combination of root words origin of demos, which means people and kratos which means rule or power to the people. Just like Republic. So how did two schools of thought who started out with such similarity become two of such disparity? I’m sort of a geek and love George Washington. They tried to get him to run for a third term and he didn’t even want to run for the second. He said no one should stay in office for too long as it was so corruptible. He just wanted to go back to Mount Vernon and make whiskey, which is what he did. Back in his time presidential elections went like this; whoever won the election was president and whoever lost was vice president. Can you imagine the candidates we have today working in the same building for the good of the people? Yikes! What a concept. However, that concept actually does let the people rule. The majority vote wins. The second choice does their best to get along with the first choice and make the country work with freedom by the people for the people and you know the rest. I am glad we finally have a rest from the debates but in four more years we are going to have more debates. I can’t change the world.

I am but a columnist in a small town, just part of the public who would like to be reinstated and not debated about from people who’ve never met me or you and don’t understand we can’t stand it anymore! Stop debating, start working together so we can have jobs and work so we can be safe and feel good as a nation. If George Washington were here, I would dare say he would cross the Delaware one more time and tell them to stop the shenanigans, get along and get on with making this country great and free; and while you’re at it do away with the silly debates. Yet another thing we don’t need to be taxed over. I think I recall the Thomas Jefferson made the pursuit of happiness one of our inalienable rights. That’s rights not fights. I laughed so hard when I heard the last debate was in Las Vegas. I thought what a wonderful venue for this. The place where famous boxing matches take place. Perfect! It would be so impressive if they would put the candidates in a boxing ring. They could come out in shiny satin robes and duke it out. The moderator could be a referee and ring a bell when time was up. Debating isn’t supposed to be fighting. It’s about ideas and getting them across so people can make free choices. No matter which party you are, the term political party is an oxymoron. Glad the debates are over. Let the holidays begin. The real fight starts on Black Friday!

SARA MICHAELS’

PORCH GARTH BROOKS My dream FINALLY came true! I met Garth Brooks! AHHHHH!! Yes; to answer your question, I had uncontrollable tears flowing down my cheeks. It was a once in a lifetime experience that I will hold dear to my heart for the rest of my days. I understand that he’s just a man who puts his pants on the same way we do every day. That man though, has influenced me in more ways than one. A man I never met, taught me the meaning of passion… one of the most important characteristic that I embrace and respect in myself and in others.

There’s old songs, new songs, cover songs, live songs and even collaboration songs! It’s TREMENDOUSLY affordable...10 discs…121 songs, in true Garth fashion…only $29.99! That’s just mind blowing to me! His new album entitled “Gunslinger” will also be in the bundle… other stores will be able to sell that album on November 25th. Chris (from Today & Tonight Magazine) is going to kill me for this article being so long, so with that being said…HAPPY GARTH-ING!!

Garth Brooks: The Ultimate Collection track listing:

Old School 1. “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)” 2. “If Tomorrow Never Comes” 3. “1982” 4. “Unwound” 5. “Longneck Bottle” 6. “Two of A Kind, Workin’ on a Full House” 7. “Good Ol’ Boys Like Me” 8. “Amos Moses” 9. “That Ol’ Wind” 10. “Alabama Clay” 11. “White Lightning” 12. “Don’t Close Your Eyes”

Garth Brooks and Sara Michaels

Garth had four concerts scheduled in Orlando, then along came Hurricane Matthew. His Thursday night concert was moved to Sunday afternoon…his Friday night concert moved to Saturday afternoon. So Garth did two shows a day on Saturday and Sunday. Where does this man get his energy and stamina is beyond me! I had tickets for Friday night (which means, I was in the 3pm show on Saturday afternoon). The entire crowd in the arena stood the whole time singing every single song along with him. This isn’t a surprise to me though, I’ve travelled across the country to see this man in concert and every show is the same way…people are on their feet for Garth..and he feeds off of it! There were many first time Garth concert goers who posted on Facebook or sent me text messages. To read their comments was such a delight to me! Each and every single one of them were blown away by his show. He proved, without a doubt, exactly WHY he is the biggest selling act of all time! On November 11th, Garth releases Garth Brooks: The Ultimate Collection exclusively in Target! This box set isn’t just another way for Garth to make money.

MANNIX POOLS

One of Central Florida’s Leading Barbecue Grill and Supply Stores

Mannix Pools has been in business for over 17 years now and has grown from being a pool cleaning company to adding in pool remodels and now their passion, outdoor kitchens and living spaces. Once they started creating custom outdoor living spaces Mannix Pools knew they had to bring in a grill line. It was then that the owner, BJ Mannix brought in the Big Green Egg in and that was the beginning of it all. It ignited the barbeque passion in not only himself and his employees but his customers as well. The excitement was overwhelming because if you know anything about BJ, he never does anything halfway and all the products will be top notch. Being a huge supporter of community events, Mannix Pools dove into the barbecue community and fell in love with the people,

the events and let’s not forget the amazing food. They have sponsored many barbecue teams, traveled to many barbecue events in state and out, and even host cooking classes once every two months bringing in some of the top grilling masters in the Central Florida area. Bj Mannix states that it is their customer service that sets them apart from their competition on both the pool servicing side and the barbecue grill side. They have made it seamless for their pool customers to get anything they need from the barbecue grill side of the business. All a customer has to do is call the day before their pool service is scheduled and order all their barbecue supplies. Mannix Pools with deliver everything the customer ordered right to their front door the day of

servicing. Not to mention, when you buy a barbecue grill from Mannix Pools you become a part of the What’s Cookin’ at Mannix Pools community and you get 10% off ALL barbecue supplies... every time you come in. Want to buy a grill but have no way to get it home? No worries. Mannix Pools will put the grill together for you and deliver it to your house... because they believe in top notch customer service. Since Mannix Pools brought in the Big Green Egg they have grown and expanded their retail store and now carry top of the line propane grills, pellet grills and charcoal grills. Some of the brands include Treager Pellet Grill, Napoleon Grills, Delta Heat and Green Mountain Grills. They have a showroom filled with any kind of barbecue accessory you can imagine and a wide variety of different spices, rubs and sauces. They have truly embraced the grilling side of

Mannix Pools and continue to give back to the community. When we say give back they give back to local charities, they give back to their customers and they give whatever it takes to provide the best experience possible. So now when you see the Mannix Pools logo around town, remember it is not just a pool servicing and remodel company but they have quickly become one of Central Florida’s leading barbecue grill and supply stores.
