Located along 200 Post Ave SW, right off Cypress Gardens Boulevard in Winter Haven, Water Tower Farmers Market is an indoor flea market open seven days a week with 50 vendors, ten kitchens, and several food and beverage stalls. Their main tenant is Tu Plaza Market, a supermarket that sells groceries, fresh fruit and produce, and even meat provided by an on-site butcher. Next door is the indoor flea market with several dozen vendors selling everything from clothing and candy to professional services like accounting, health insurance, and locksmithing. Around the perimeter are ten kitchens with a cafeteria serving a diverse selection of international food items including cuisine from Central and South America, the Caribbean, Asia, and even all-American favorites with soul food and all-day breakfast. Melissa Altamirano, Property Manager, was brought on board to help launch the Water Tower Farmers Market in Winter Haven. Her management company was inspired by a similar concept they experienced in North Florida, and they wanted to bring something similar to Central Florida. “Our group of investors saw in the north the concept of an indoor flea market that also highlighted kitchens and great food,” she said. “An opportunity showed itself in Polk County to remodel a property in Winter Haven, and there are no other indoor flea markets like it. It was that inspiration and enjoyable shopping experience that the investors had, and they
wanted to launch it here.” Through her new position, she was able to recruit many local entrepreneurs, many of whom had pre-existing locations in Polk County like Mimi’s Italian Ice in Lakeland and Lakeland Fancy Cakes Boutique in Lake Alfred. She also invited many other vendors and business owners from outside the county. Not only did Water Tower Farmer’s Market offer a unique indoor venue for many budding entrepreneurs, but it also provided them generous leeway in how their vendors operated. “One of the things that is Continued ->

really needed in the business community is enough flexibility to give that business owner their own hour leverage,” Altamirano said. “In other words, giving them the option and opportunity to set up their own business hours without having the constraints and requirements that a lot of shopping centers have.” Altamirano, through her new position, offers her clients such a level of flexibility. She allows them to set their own hours and days of operation. She does not even require long-term contract requirements. Many of the vendors have chosen to operate only three to six months in their booths, with the kitchens choosing a yearly lease. “We are working with a lot of small families, family-owned completely and they need that flexibility to set up their own hours, to set up their own sched-

ule, and meet their business needs,” she said. “Because we are also new, I had that authorization to give that flexibility...[so], they have the flexibility to enter and see fit for their business model.”
Management goals moving forward
include recruiting more local farmers and creating stronger bonds with business
owners and residents alike in the city and
county. Their venue offers a unique shop-
ping experience and business opportunity unlike anything else local, and they hope their unique venue will draw in more
shoppers and entrepreneurs. Any feedback from customers and vendors alike is more than welcome, and new visitors are welcome to give the venue a try.
“We are trying to reach out to the local
community,” Altamirano said. “We are
very committed to building relationships in Polk County starting here in Winter
Haven. We can be more than a destination because we have fun things to offer and we have a heart. We will have a year of
community events and celebrations here...I always love to invite everybody to the market because it is an enjoyable, comfortable experience where you can walk indoors in air condition comfort and have a snack while you are viewing amazing items that vendors are offering for you.” Water Tower Farmers Market is located at 200 Post Ave SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880. The market is open daily from 7 AM - 8 PM from Monday to Saturday, and Sunday from 8 AM – 7 PM. For more information, visit their website at: https:// www.watertowerfarmersmarket.com/

I Know Nothing Five years ago, my editor approached me with the most audacious (if not downright ludicrous) request: he asked me if I’d be interested in penning a monthly column for this magazine. The prospect of having my own soapbox to stand on every month and voice my thoughts and opinions to the masses, unadulterated and unfiltered, intrigued me. (Also, the prospect of making more money every month was an added plus!) So, I agreed. Five years later, I’ve remained consistent with these columns. While many of my fellow staff writers have since put down their own pens and paper and discontinued their monthly installments, I’ve consistently written a column a month for this publication. So, what have I learned, you ask? That’s a good question. To be honest, I could be asking the same thing about my writing career in general. I could even reflect on my entire life as someone who could write ever since I could put pen to paper. I’ve been living on this spinning rock we call Planet Earth for the past 36 rotations around the glowing ball we call the Sun. (Next January, it’ll be 37!) I decided to major in English with a minor in journalism at 17 years old. I graduated in 2009. My journalism career began in 2011. And even before all of that, I’ve been writing. So, again, the question needs to be asked: what have I learned during that time? More specifically, what I have learned during the 36 years I have been alive on this earth? After high school, college, and a decades-long journalism career, what have I learned? If I’m being perfectly honest, not much! In the words of Socrates, “The only thing I know is that I know nothing.” That’s hyperbole, to be sure. I know plenty of things. I know my
reading, writing, and arithmetic. I know 2+2=4, the sky is blue, the grass is green, and gravity keeps me standing on this Earth, the Earth revolving around the sun, and our moon revolving around our planet. So, in that regard, I’m technically smart. I have the high school and college degrees to prove it. But being “smart” doesn’t always mean being “wise.” You’d be surprised by the number of educated idiots out there! They say with great age comes great wisdom. Well, I’m close to turning 40. Yet no matter how old I get, even when I feel older (and, boy, have I been feeling old!), I don’t always feel smarter. Truth be told, the older I get, the more I realize there’s so much that I do not know. For example, the conflict in the Middle East, how do we solve it? Heck if I know. On the one hand, I want the Jewish people to have their own homeland; but, on the other hand, they have been stealing land from their Palestinian neighbors. I want the Israeli Jews to have their own homeland, and I want Palestinians liberated from their government’s apartheid policies. So, what do we do? I don’t know. The only thing I do know is that bombing Palestinian hospitals and killing innocent civilians sure isn’t helping. And yet, as a political columnist, I’m expected to have all the answers to the big questions in the world. Yet the truth is I don’t even have the answers to my life’s big questions. All I know is that I know nothing. Oh, I do know I have to end this column. But how? Shrug. I don’t know. The views and opinions expressed in columns are not necessarily the views and opinions of Today & Tonight Magazine or Today & Tonight, Inc.

• Don’t overlook your outlets when weatherproofing. They are really just a hole that is covered by a plastic plate. The hardware store sells fireproof insulated inserts that work very well to keep electrical boxes from stealing your house heat. -- M.M. in Indiana • Draft dodgers, or door snakes, are easy to make and provide reasonable protection against drafts. To make one for yourself, you’ll need a pair of thick tights, fabric scraps cut into inch-wide strips and a big bag of rice. Cut the tights off into two long leg portions. Stuff them with fabric scraps and then add rice to give weight and fill in the holes. When the long “socks” are full, tie them off. Lay them out along the threshold, pushing them tight against the door, where they will block the draft!
