Merry Christmas! 6 DECEMBER 2015

EDITOR’S NOTE Awe... There is nothing better than a nice cold snap to snap you into the Holiday Spirit. When it comes to cold weather I am no novice. Growing up near Buffalo, NY I have witnessed and felt some of the worst winter weather you can image. But there is still something about that first day that the temperature drops and you get that giddy feeling that the Holidays are right around the corner. This month’s issue we focused on Holiday cookies and how fun they are to make and of course eat. We would love to hear about the cookies you tried or bake yourself. As always, Expect More... Get More... We Deliver... Merry Christmas Chris Douglas Publisher/Editor

ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).

By Erica Smith

Good Grief, Have a Merry Christmas Charlie Brown:

I just don’t understand Christmas, I guess. I like getting presents and sending Christmas cards and

decorating trees and all that, but I’m still not happy.

I always end up feeling depressed.

Linus Van Pelt:

Charlie Brown, you’re the only person I know who can take a

wonderful season like Christmas and turn it into a problem. Maybe Lucy’s right.

Of all the Charlie Browns in

the world, you’re the Charlie Browniest.

Is there such a thing as the

“holiday funk?” Maybe, I just

wasn’t born with the appropriate amount of joy in my DNA. Can

I blame my mother for too much Christmas exposure at such a

young age? Could an Elf support group be the answer?

I am holiday humbug until it is

time to put up my memory tree

and then, as if by magic, the haze clears and suddenly the holidays don’t seem so depressing. You

see, my memory tree is filled with ornaments from 42 years of life

upon this earth. These ornaments are probably the greatest gifts

my mother has every given me.

Forty- two perfect ornaments that are labeled with scotch tape and marked with my name and the year they were given. Many of

the ornaments were ordered from

are crumpled and torn from all the years of storage. My favorites are the miniature Madame Alexander dolls from Hallmark and like a brat; I make sure they get hung in very top center positions. I wasn’t always onboard with the memory tree and there was a time when all I wanted was that perfect tree you see in magazines. In my early twenties, I dreamed of a gorgeous Christmas tree that was flawlessly lit with tiny white lights and laden with expertly tied ribbons and designer decorations. Those thoughts were quickly extinguished when I saw the horror on my mother’s face after describing my fabulous decorating plans. Thankfully, those selfish ideals were quickly abandoned and the memory tree was born. My husband has also inherited the tradition and he now has fifteen very cool ornaments to add to the collection. The older I get, the more I understand how much my parents sacrificed to make my life so extraordinary. A life so amazing that forty-two unique ornaments (plus 15 more thanks to Keith’s contribution) perfectly capture their hopes, dreams and wishes for us each year. I hope you will adopt our family tradition and start a memory tree for your loved ones. It is the perfect antidote to the holiday funk. Wishing you a blessed holiday season and a Very Merry Christmas.

Oh Snap!

It’s Christmas Cookie Time

O

ne of the best traditions of the holidays is sharing Christmas cookies with friends and family. The smell of fresh baked goods often signals the arrival of the season and many Central Florida kitchens will be filled with grandmothers, mothers and daughters churning out platter after platter of delicious, sugary delights. Whether it’s gingerbread, sugar, jam-filled thumbprints, shortbread, snowballs or chocolate chip, everyone has a favorite holiday cookie. In fact, there are over a million different cookie recipes on the internet however for the holidays most Americans still prefer the tried and true favorites. Many food historians track the history of the cookie all the way back to the days of cave dwelling where a simple batter of grain paste was heated on rocks from the fire. In fact, in medieval kitchens, cookies were tiny test cakes that helped the cooks test the temperature of the huge stone ovens. The tradition of Christmas cookies probably started in Europe during the 1500s when the strict guild laws governing the baking of gingerbread were relaxed and people were allowed to bake their own at home, thus the sweet treat was only enjoyed once a year. Unlike the spicy and sweet cookies we enjoy today, medieval gingerbread was made using breadcrumbs, boiled with honey and seasoned heavily with spices. The mixture was then pressed onto heavy wooden cookie boards with religious designs and dried. Over time, the recipe evolved into what the Germans called Lebkuchen, Springerle or Speculaas. We can thank Germany for introducing the world to two holiday traditions: Christmas trees and Christmas cookies! Records show, as early as 1597, Oblaten (decorated communion wafers) were hung on evergreen trees as holiday dec-

10 DECEMBER 2015

By Erica Smith oration. By the 17th century, the popularity of cookies had spread throughout Europe and many different cultures were baking up holiday delights. The people of Sweden preferred Papparkakor (spicy ginger and black-pepper delights), while the Norwegians took to the liking of Krumkake (thin lemon and cardamom-scented wafers). The Dutch may also be responsible for the earliest Christmas cookies as the word “cookie” comes from the Dutch word Koeptje, meaning small cake. The Christmas cookie tradition carried over to the new world and one of the most popular tree decorations of the 1800’s was Barnum’s Animal Cracker boxes (the boxes were designed for this purpose). Unlike the spicy European recipes, sugar cookie cut-outs became an American holiday tradition thanks to the “mummers” plays that were popular throughout the churches of the Northeast. The “mummers” would act out bible stories and use sugar cookies, cut in the shapes of baby Jesus and the manger, to help depict their Bible messages. The Pennsylvania Dutch also created large cookie cut-outs that were used as window decorations to represent the Christmas Star and the Heavenly Host. Similar to the tradition of enjoying Christmas cookies through the holidays, Hanukkah also features sweet treats during the eight day celebration. The custom of eating foods fried or baked in oil (preferably olive oil) commemorates the miracle of a small flask of oil keeping the flame that was in the holy temple alight for eight days. Traditional foods include potato pancakes, known as latkes and strawberry jamfilled doughnuts called Sufganiyot which are deep-fried in oil. Bakeries in Israel have popularized many new types of fillings for Sufganiyot including chocolate cream, vanilla cream, caramel and cappuccino. The tradition of leaving cookies and milk for Santa has

many different origins and can be traced to the Feast of Saint Nicholas that is held in early December where children are taught to leave food and drink for the saint and his attendants. The offering is then exchanged for gifts overnight. Historians also think the practice is directly related to the history of the Christmas tree. In Germany, a “Paradise” tree was decorated with apples, wafers and cookies. Children were told Saint Nicholas and his naughty helper Krampus would often snack on the delicious decorations. Over time, while Christmas tree decorations changed but the idea of leaving snacks stuck around. One other theory holds that the tradition could be linked to Norse mythology where tribes would leave hay and treats for Odin’s eight legged horse Sleipner in hopes the god would stop by their home during his Yule hunting adventures. This tradition was also handed down to Dutch children who would leave treats out for Sinterklass’ horse named Amerigo. The final possibility of the tradition’s origin is linked to the Great Depression and it is believed that American parents wanted to inspire their children to share with others. To help them do this, they would leave snacks out for Santa and his reindeer. The jury is still out on Santa’s favorite cookie however many polls point towards the traditional American favorite: chocolate chip which pairs the best with a tall glass of frosty milk! However in 2015, Santa may be going to the North Pole Crossfit and watching his calories and so gluten free and organic options will be appreciated! Be sure to eat your fill of Christmas cookies this year! From the entire staff of Today & Tonight Magazine, we offer our blessings for the holidays and wish you a truly Merry Christmas.

LA FLOR DE ESPANA BAKERY AND RESTAURANT 200 Post Ave SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880 (863) 299-1122

3 cups unbleached, all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 c sugar 2 sticks unsalted butter, cold & cut into chunks 1 egg 3/4 tsp pure vanilla extract 1/2 tsp pure almond extract 1/4 tsp kosher salt INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to 350. Combine the flour and baking powder, set aside. Cream the sugar and butter. Add the egg and extracts and mix. Gradually add the flour mixture and beat just until combined, scraping down the bowl, especially the bottom. The dough will be crumbly, so knead it together with your hands as you scoop it out of the bowl for rolling. Roll on a floured surface to about 1/4” to 3/8” thick, and cut into shapes. Place on parchment lined baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes. Decorate with royal icing and colorful sanding sugar. ROYAL GLAZE 1/4 cup warm water 1 tablespoon light corn syrup 1/4 teaspoon almond extract 3 cups confectioners’ sugar, or more as needed Mix the liquid ingredients together until combined. Add slowly to the powered sugar until you reach a glazing consistency. For stiffer icing, add less liquid to sugar. It too thick to glaze - add a tiny bit of water until preferred consistency. (For Royal Icing - add a tablespoon of Meringue powder)

Jazzed-Up Jam Thumbprints We took Associate Publisher Tracey Greene’s favorite childhood cookie memory and jazzed it up with warm almond flavors and delicious jam! 1 cup unsalted butter, softened slightly 2/3 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup raspberry, strawberry or blackberry jam (seedless preferred, Bonne Maman has great jam flavors) GLAZE 1 cup powdered sugar 2 to 3 teaspoons water 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract 1/2 to 1/4 cup of sliced almonds - toasted or you sprinkle a few green nonpareils on each cookie for color and texture. DIRECTIONS Combine butter, sugar and 1/2 teaspoon almond extract in bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add flour; beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until well mixed. Cover; refrigerate at least 1 hour or until firm. Heat oven to 350°F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Make indentation in center of each cookie with the back of deep tablespoon measuring spoon (edges may crack slightly). The measuring spook will provide the perfect well for plenty of jam. Fill each indentation with about 1/4 teaspoon jam. Bake 14-18 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Let stand 1 minute on cookie sheets; remove to cooling rack. Cool completely. Combine all glaze ingredients in bowl with whisk until smooth. Drizzle over cookies in a crisscross pattern. Sprinkle with the toasted sliced almonds.

SARA MICHAELS’

PORCH It really is true…you can’t please everyone. Several years back, people were all ticked off because country music took a “pop” sound with the big Taylor Swift boom. In the past few years, people are complaining that it’s too many “bro-country” songs that say the same stuff over and over. The common denominator of both sets of people was “this isn’t country music!” Eric Church sings a song called “Country Music Jesus”…the first lines are: “I had a revelation last night Divine inspiration from the other side Of what it’s gonna take to right all this wrong We need a country music Jesus to come and save us all” (cue the waters parting)...Nashville gives you, Chris Stapleton. In November at the CMA’s, Chris was presented with New Vocalist of the Year & Male Vocalist of the Year…and social media went NUTS! Countless posts saying that his performance with Justin Timberlake was the best performance in years on the awards show, then at the same time trashing him saying he had “no business” winning because he wasn’t known to the public. The CMA’s are awards that are voted on by industry people. People who are actually in the Country Music Business. People who; obviously, want a change in the sound of what Nashville is providing to radio. What most people don’t know is that Chris has been around the music industry for many years. To quote Wikipedia: “He is an established songwriter with six number one songs including the five-week number one “Never Wanted Nothing More” recorded by Kenny Chesney, “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright” recorded by George Strait and “Come Back Song” recorded by Darius Rucker. As a songwriter, over 150 of Stapleton’s songs have appeared on albums by such artists as Adele, Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley. He has co-written with notable artists like Vince Gill, Peter Frampton and Sheryl Crow. The album became Stapleton’s first number-one on the Billboard 200 chart.” In my professional opinion, Chris has EVERY right to be deserving of those awards and then some!

12 DECEMBER 2015

Chris Stapleton After his performance and wins at the CMA’s, Chris’ single “Nobody to Blame” started showing up on country playlist at radio stations across the nation (still climbing the singles chart), and his album “Traveler” went back up the charts to Number One again. After watching Chris’ performance, my first thought was “wow, I feel sorry for whoever has to perform after that!”…you can look up who did…NO comparison. Country Music has been on the pendulum of pop to traditional as long as I can remember. From even before 1975’s incident where Charlie Rich took out a lighter and burned John Denver’s awards ballot until today. (though I wasn’t born yet, that move was totally “gangsta”) The point is that I think what the industry needs to learn is that we as listeners don’t need to be hammered with 500 Dan & Shay sounding artists at one time if that sound is popular…we don’t have to be smothered with the Florida Georgia Line sound either. Life is about balance, in every form. There is nothing wrong with radio playing some traditional sounding Chris Stapleton and then going into a pop sounding Carrie Underwood song. Less is more, and balance is key. If you DO like the sound of Chris Stapleton and want to hear some more like him…look up Sturgill Simpson, Cody Jinks and Jason Isbell. As an industry veteran, Chris’ sound has put excitement back in my passion and breath back into my lungs…thank you Nashville.

BRIAN’S BRAIN

By Brian Bruchey FROSTY

How Rude! Life is full of rules. Some rules are good rules, and some rules are stupid rules which were made, because there are some things that aren’t covered by rules, since everyone thought there didn’t need to be a rule for something, until someone stupid came along and did something stupid, and the people who are in charge of making the rules are forced into making a stupid rule. The stupid rules were previously unspoken rules. Everyone pretty much abides by the unspoken rules, and those who do not are stupid. There are rules that are written, and are punishable by jail-time… those are laws. The people who don’t follow those are crooks. There are rules of the road which are punishable in many ways, from jail for the most serious, down to name-calling and middle-fingers. The people who don’t follow these rules are usually called bastards. Or at least, that’s what I call them. God, and Charlton Heston gave us rules to live by. Those are called the Ten Commandments. I’m a firm believer in the Golden Rule: Do unto others, as you would have done unto you. If more people would follow the Golden Rule, this would be a much better world to live in. Of course, I’ve said the world would be a better place if women were always topless, or if every person I passed gave me a dollar, or if lunch was always pizza. But this is something I really do think would benefit everyone. Imagine if you will, that the Golden Rule was law. And if somebody calls you on one of your decisions, then you’d be brought before a judge who would sentence you to have done unto you like you did unto someone else…three times the degree of your initial transgression. Let’s say that you let your dog poop in a public area, and then you refuse to pick up after the dog. Someone sees this happen, calls the poo-poo po-po, and they haul you off to see the judge. The judge then allows three people to bring their dogs to your yard, and drop a load there. If you get caught again, it will be four doggies doing the doo. Fifth offense calls for five fidos fecalling, and so on.

Frosty is a playful and goofy boy. He is a mix breed who is about 5 months old. He loves to entertain you and play ball. Frosty plays rough and uses his paws like a boxer. He would be a good pet for a family who is on the go and will take him with them for walks or out for a jog.

LUCKY GIRL Lucky Girl is a sweet little torbie cat. She loves to be out on the screened porch sun bathing. She has a laid back personality and will make a wonderful addition to your family.

BAILY

When it comes to rudeness, it would be hard to punish a violator’s unkindness in kind. So, let’s say someone treats a server at a restaurant rudely, and the manners mafia catches wind of the dirty deed. The offender should be hauled in front of a judge for punishment. You know how Mike Rowe had that TV show where he would do dirty jobs? Maybe rude people could be sentenced to do a dirty job for a day. I once learned of a job at a sewage treatment facility, where they have this big wheel, about ten feet across, with spikes all over it…it turns in the sewage, picking up items that had been flushed down the toilets. The person’s job is to remove the items from the spikes, and put them in a pile. At this time, stop reading for about thirty seconds, and think about what kind of things people might flush down a toilet. There…that was pretty nasty, wasn’t it. Sounds like a pretty good punishment for someone being a jerk, right? If rudeness was outlawed, I think you’d find most offenders at Wal Mart, theaters, and the interstate. LUIGI’S ITALIAN RESTAURANT 20 DECEMBER 2015

By Loren Spangler Photos By Chris Douglas Luigi’s Italian Restaurant is family run and offers classic New York style Italian food. A local favorite in Lake Alfred for over nine years the charming restaurant offers sit down dining in a warm, comfortable atmosphere. From pizzas to pastas to chicken parmigiana to veal piccata, enjoy their fresh fish and salads; their menu offers an encyclopedia of tasty meals. Pick up is also available. Conveniently located in the center of Lake Alfred, customers enjoy $9.99 lunch specials, and authentic, homemade dinners. “I was a chef in a famous New York Italian restaurant for twenty-five years,” says Luigi Uzhca, owner of Luigi’s, who started working in the kitchen at the age of fifteen. “Starting while you are young and making money is a good way to learn,” he says. Luigi grew up with an Italian family from Sicily. Located off the toe of the boot of Italy; with over nine thousand square miles and five million people, it’s the largest island in the entire Mediterranean. On the eastern edge is Mt. Etna…Europe’s highest and most active volcano, which recently erupted during May 2015. “I am very happy to be living here in the United

States,” says Luigi, stating he moved to Florida about ten years ago. “Starting with nothing, I realized that being honest and working hard for your customers will go a long way.” He says that’s the philosophy he lives by and it has never let him down. When it comes to fine cuisine, Luigi cooks the old, traditional way…takes a little more time and does it right. He says since he and his family live in Lake Alfred, he wanted to open a restaurant that was close to home. “It’s a nice quiet town. A special community,” he says. Luigi’s Italian Restaurant originally consisted of an auto parts store and residence, of which the structure near the road was made into a dining room that seats twenty-seven people. “When I first began, there was no cooking area or patio. Nothing was there,” Luigi says. Needing more space, he built an adjoining building that became a large chef’s kitchen with an outside covered patio. The rear building was then turned into a dining and party room for forty people. “What we have is an Italian orientated bistro,” says Luigi adding that the friendly style of the establishment is also appropriate for kids as well. He says that guests like to visit the same place again and again where they feel comfortable and well taken care of. “I grew up in the business and all the people know me,” he says. “My brother and brother-in-law have an Italian restaurant in Lake Wales. We always talk and discuss ways of doing things and making them better. Our menus are the same in both places, and I think that’s important.” “I have two grown sons, Edwin (oldest), Jonathan, and a daughter named Katherine.” His wife is named Natalia. “My three brothers (Julio, Arturo, Jose), and I worked at different restaurants in New York and they are all chefs now.” MENU: Delicious Italian meals made fresh daily from scratch with lots of choices. Antipasti: Baked Clams, Bruschetta, Eggplant Rollatine, Cold Antipasto, Fried Calamari, Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail,

Broccolirabe, Mozzarella en Carrozza, Mussels a la Marinara, Clams en Vino Bianco, Fried Zucchini, Roasted Red Peppers. Soup (Stracciatella or Tortellini). HOMEMADE PASTA: Primavera, Manicotti, Ravioli, Eggplant Parmigiana, Ziti, Fetttuccine, Lasagna, Spaghetti, and Luigi’s signature Stuffed Pork Chop (recommended). Chicken & Veal: Cacciatore, Francaise, Marsala, Sorrentino, Piccata, Milanesa, Scarpariello, Parmigia. Seafood: Calamari, Salmon, Talapia, and Shrimp. Ask about their Pizza (create your own), Hot Sandwiches, Desserts, and Side Orders. Try their selection of cold beer and fine red wines. COMMENTS: “Luigi’s is a fabulous place to have an event,” says customer Jane Meadows. “I am giving a party for my son and this is the best place to do it.” Tyler says: I Love Luigi’s…it’s the best Italian restaurant. Steve: Delicious food. Abe:

Looking for the perfect holiday gift?

JAN 5-6, THE LAKELAND CENTER WATCH MYTHS AND LEGENDS FROM 5,000 YEARS OF CIVILIZATION COME TO LIFE ON STAGE!

Enter the gates to a lost civilization The people of China have long held that their magnificent culture was a gift from the heavens. Art was primarily a means to explore the connection between humankind and the higher universe. Through the Universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of genuine Chinese culture. Each of Shen Yun’s mini-drama pieces draw upon China’s history from the Yellow Emperor, through the many dynasties, and all the way to the modern day. Myths, legends, and historical figures come alive on stage through the expressive and physically demanding art form of classical Chinese dance. Shen Yun artists include many winners of international competitions in dance, music, and singing. They embrace the ancient Chinese belief that true art stems from a beautiful inner self. This allows them to extend their craft beyond the boundaries of performing arts as we know it.

The Shen Yun Orchestra

With live music by the one-of-a-kind Shen Yun Orchestra “Beautiful sound... strikingly intricate melodies.” —NYTheater.com

An uplifting journey awaits you ...

There is no symphony orchestra like Shen Yun. It is the world’s only orchestra that combines both classical western and Chinese instruments as its permanent members. Alongside classical Western symphonic mainstays–like brass, woodwinds, strings, and percussion–Shen Yun incorporates ancient Chinese instruments such as the two-stringed erhu and the plucked pipa, create a dramatic new sound.

Classical Chinese Dance

What is the best way to tell a story that spans 5,000 years and takes place in a land called the Middle Kingdom? The answer is classical Chinese dance. With a vast and independent system of movements, postures, and gestures, classical Chinese dance is the perfect way to express the deeper inner meanings of China’s profound ancient culture. Martial arts techniques—tempered on the battlefield—were incorporated into classical Chinese dance in what has become a vast repertoire of jumps, spins, and tumbling techniques.

Backdrops That Transport You

With state-of-the-art graphics technology, Shen Yun’s digital-backdrop team creates vividly animated settings, extending the stage and transporting the audience to completely new and different realms.

A Fashion Show of the Ages

Chinese history is replete with a lavish variety of apparel. Shen Yun performances display the grandeur of this heritage in full splendor with hundreds of colorful, handmade garments spanning China’s regions, dynasties, and ethnicities.

“It was an extraordinary experience for us and the children.” — Cate Blanchett, Academy Award-winning actress

“It’s absolutely beautiful. It was so inspiring, I think I may have found some new ideas for the next Avatar.” —Robert Stromberg, Academy Award-winning production designer for Avatar

BY ANASTASIA ZIVIC There is nothing in the world quite like that song that seems to be written specifically for you. It speaks to you in a way that few other things can. It does things a smile, nod or hug cannot. It’s an understanding from deep within; a soul embrace. The range of emotions music can elicit is something science has been studying for decades. Many people refer to the music they love as the soundtrack of their lives and it truly can be. It stands to be said then, that those who play music to standards which we admire become quite special in our eyes. People who perform music live among us: our parents, our partners and spouses, our children - every fifth-grader who ever rocked a recorder with reckless abandon; we love them. And we love pop stars and country crooners and world-renowned players in and out of celebrity’s spotlight. They play the songs that make us feel good! Fortunately, via radio and current technology lending itself to easy portability, we have easy access to most of our favorite tunes as we head on down the road. But look closer to home and you’ll often find fine players at your favorite neighborhood establishments. These are often the warriors of the entertainment industry. They are called: The Local Musicians. Most of us in the internet age are familiar with memes - the images, videos, and phrases that are altered in a creative or humorous way and spread like wildfire on social media. There are plenty of memes with funny jabs towards musicians, and one of the most telling has to be the one that quips: Musician: Someone who puts $5,000 worth of gear into a $500 car to drive 100 miles to a $50 gig. Many a musician has certainly laughed at that meme

with a knowing, faraway look in their eye, because many times it’s been true. We all have to pay our dues and cut our teeth in our chosen industries. For the local musician, though, it’s often a reality they choose to live so they can share their talent, passion and truth with the world. So, how can we as fans support those who live music’s grind? Sometimes it’s as easy as a flick of your finger! Here are five ways in which you can show your gratitude to that local talent that has brightened your day, kept you in awe, and reminded you how to feel good and forget your troubles for a while. BUY THE BAND! The band is the product – and so is their merchandise. Put your money where your mouth is! Whether it’s a CD, t-shirt or sticker, after cost this is the most profitable way for a band to earn extra cash to supplement their pay. Plus, you look cool in band swag. TIP YOUR HAT… Most times when there is no cover charge you’ll see a little bucket by the stage. Or a big bucket. Or an open guitar case. Don’t be shy. The players will notice and they will thank you! While buying the band a round is nice, helping them put gas in their car is nicer. SHARE. RETWEET. REPEAT. Promoting on social media is the new norm, and every Like, Share and Retweet helps! Believe it or not, this is a big one, and it doesn’t cost you a dime. Share the band’s flyer, click going on that Event invite, tell your network about the musician and point them in the direction of their pages. Invite friends to Like pages – invite friends to your favorite band’s gigs! While it may be slightly irritating to have a Wall full of advertisements,

it’s the best way for the local musician to get the word out about their music, and it’s right in their budgets. That means free. Facebook tip: Every time you ignore a page’s post Facebook’s algorithm detects your choice, and you are less likely to see posts from that page in the future! Keep your favorite local musician’s news on your feed by clicking like and commenting (with words of encouragement!). SCREAM IT FROM THE MOUNTAINTOPS! Okay, don’t actually scream. Point is, let that venue owner know how much you like having your favorite musicians play at their establishments. As a matter of fact, make sure to frequent those places that have great music you love. Write a review! Facebook, Yelp, etc., all have great ways in which to express your love for your favorite players, and help the owners know they’ve made a great decision in their hiring. Again, spread the love. PONY UP. If there’s a cover charge at the establishment where they play, pony up with a smile. Oftentimes this offsets the cost of paying the musicians and helps the venue keep booking your favorite artist. Don’t let the cost deter you. It’s still cheaper than buying a beer at a Bucs game. However you choose to support local music, it’s not hard to be a great fan. The entertainers that surround us notice the enthusiastic and responsive folks who appreciate what they offer. Each hoot, holler and handclap makes it that much more enjoyable for the player and allows them to shine brighter, giving you their best performance. After all, while musicians do it for themselves, they also do it for us. And we love it, don’t we? As The Stones say, “I know its only rock and roll but I like it.” DECEMBER 2015

It’s Basically Like, You Know, Literally, Like, You Know, Awesome, Epic, Like…Really? Just Sayin’… Please don’t be mad at me. We all use connectors in our speech that is very different than writing. However, do we have to basically, like, literally, like use words, you know, that don’t mean, you know, much? Really? As I’m writing this my grammar check underlined “really” to remind me that word can’t stand alone and it should not have a question mark. Really? Yes, the word really is not a question. Our language has become so loose it “literally” is falling apart at the seams. I hope someone caught that language has NOT “literally” done anything except change the meaning of literally which is also a word that people use way too much. In the literal sense, literal means, exact. So unless you mean it is exactly what you are “literally” discussing then leave it out. For example, unless someone has actually called an ambulance for you and you were checked into the ER and were revived, don’t say, “I literally was dying when he/she did that.” It has to be exact, which is not to be confused with the “exact same”. That is redundant. No, I’m not a proper person with a prune-y nature. I’m quite the opposite. I love conversations charged with energy, improper grammar and the occasional wellplaced cuss-word for emotional

accent, but could we at least prune some of the extraneous words? Maybe I have ADD, but it’s hard to listen to like, she said, blah, blah, blah, and then like, he said, blah, blah, blah. All I hear is the “like” and I miss the gist. I need gist! Where is Joe Friday from Dragnet to say, “Just the facts, ma’am.” If something is awesome, it needs to be profound, not like, you know, you found a nickel on the street. To qualify as awesome, visit the Grand Canyon and run it through that filter. Also, if it’s “epic” it needs to have a very long beginning, middle and end. It needs to have a hero or two, adventure, conflict, struggle and resolution with good and evil. It needs to be, dare I say, epic! It does not mean that the party was really fun. That is not epic. Just sayin’!... Really?... Like, ye-ah!...Awesome! Christmas is awesome and epic. Say it all you want this month, then make a resolution to drop it like the ball on Times Square for the New Year. paddling toward me on the lake and asked if I was Hank Longo. I said, yes and he said, “You’re a legend around here and I’d love to learn to ski with you.” I had another person to be a mentor to and it taught me much, too. T&T MAG: That’s a bittersweet story. HANK: Yes, but it was also a rebirth in a very short amount of time and I’m an advocate for safety. T&T MAG: Talk about how you produce far reaching documentaries and do local shows too. HANK: Yes, I do Sports Central over there and work on other projects. T&T MAG: Water skiing; TV production; children’s books. Tell us about the chronology of your careers? HANK: I wrote my first children’s book in college. Cat Stevens’ songs inspired me. They are fairy-tallish and I didn’t have to constrain my imagination. My high school English teacher Mr. Kaminskis also was an influence. He told me to keep writing. I did and I am. My mom was a teacher and encouraged me too.

HANK LONGO

By Mary Joye

The Sequel: The Art of Living Well PART TWO Last month we interviewed Hank Longo, but wait there’s more! Hank was recently inducted into the USA Water Ski Foundation Hall of Fame with the Award of Distinction. As I interviewed him in front of Richard’s coffee shop, several people came by to congratulate him and recognized him from his artistic and athletic endeavors. Hank Longo produces documentaries, writes books, built a house by himself on snowshoes and is water ski champion. It is his joy for living that is a gift to many adults and children. The Christmas season we share his art for living well. Hank Longo began his journey here from Minnesota, which is almost to the North Pole to us down here! But it’s what he learned in Taos that made his near death appreciate life. T&T MAG: What did you learn and what do you teach from your experience in New Mexico when you built that cabin 10,000 feet up? HANK: I was reading a lot of on spiritual enlightenment when I was in college. It was in the era when The Beatles were popular. Yogi philosophy is about accomplishing inner peace. What I teach kids now is there is a tomorrow that they are responsible for as well. They need to not be restrained with their thinking; be open-minded and not critical. Everyone is as valuable as another in God’s eyes. T&T MAG: So you had revelations up there? HANK: Yes, a big one was realizing that you can stand on top of a mountain, look all around and know just how small you are in the universe. 28 DECEMBER 2015

At the same time I felt important in it because I was one of the little pieces that make it all up. Yet, (he smiles) some people take themselves too seriously. On that mountain scream and yell and see if anybody hears or cares! They don’t. T&T MAG: No, they can’t hear you and didn’t know you were there. HANK: Another analogy I teach is to imagine a gathering of people of the whole spectrum of wealth from poor to rich. If a tidal wave comes in everybody is going down! T&T MAG:: Yes, we are all the same! HANK: We all have a spirit. You feel good around some people and other’s you don’t. We are all equally important. T&T MAG: Is this what you teach kids in your book Soar! HANK: Yes and part of it is that I lost a best friend while skiing many years ago in Minnesota. Two days after the tragedy a young man was

T&T MAG: You do inspire kids, now! HANK: I believe if you inspire kids to have a dream; and with passion working hand-in-hand, we can direct their education at an early age so they follow a path and accomplish it. My book gives a clear visual path to make dreams a reality. T&T MAG: It sounds revolutionary. HANK: It is more than one thing. If someone wants to be a professional athlete I ask them what they would do if they broke a leg. Kids need to know about back-up plans. I was a waiter at the same time as I was a business owner. I announced water ski events while skiing. All people need to get ego out of the way. T&T MAG: Well noted. I bet some of that was learned on the mountain, too. HANK: Yes, I was in snowshoes by myself in the winter and built a cabin and got buried in the snow and have lived to tell people they can do anything. T&T MAG: (Hank paused and wrote from memory what he learned on the mountain.) HANK: I give this poem to all my friends to help brighten their spirits. It comes in an envelope that says “The Ascent is Never Ending”. We were silent as snow falling on a Christmas tree as Hank Longo wrote; TAOS When I got to the mountains I decided to snowshoe up into woods That night I almost froze beneath the trees buried by the blizzard that covered me. The next morning when the storm was over it became clear to me, that we never die; We just go from one life to another. Whether on water skis, snow skis, writing or in a classroom inspiring children Hank Longo teaches the art of life.

BRAINEXCERCISE Sudoku Puzzle STRANGE BUT TRUE BY SAMANTHA WEAVER • It was noted American journalist, fabulist and satirist Ambrose Bierce who, in his work “The Devil’s Dictionary,” defined “painting” as “the art of protecting flat surfaces from the weather and exposing them to the critic.” • Only one state has a one-syllable name: Maine. • A married couple in Batavia, New York, had such a turbulent marriage that the wife had a restraining order issued to keep her husband away from her. After the divorce, though, they worked things out and planned a second wedding. At the reception, the second-time groom got into an argument with one of the guests, and the police were called. The argument didn’t end up being the real problem; the officers on the scene arrested the groom on charges of criminal contempt. It seems the original restraining order was still in effect -- it was illegal for him to be near his bride on their wedding day. • Those who study such things say that dead people can get goosebumps. • Arguably, the best-known battle of the U.S. Civil War occurred in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 1863. This battle saw the most casualties of any during the war, and it is considered by many historians to be a turning point. Many don’t realize the sheer volume of gunfire that occurred there, though; so many bullets were fired during the three-day battle -- and so many went astray -- that trees near the battlefield later died from lead poisoning.
