TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

May Your Holidays Be Merry Not Scary... As soon as we turn the calendar page to September, it seems there is a mad dash with the retailers to see who can get Christmas decorations on display in their stores first. The consumers, then in return, start harboring anxiousness towards the impending Christmas holiday season or whatever holiday you celebrate. This really impedes our ability to be relaxed and enjoy the season when your mind goes into overload: How many people are gifts being bought for? What’s the budget look like? When is there time to decorate the house? What Christmas parties or events are being attended? What meals are being planned: cocktail party, Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas lunch or dinner, New Year’s Eve dinner, New Year’s Day lunch? Lists upon lists upon lists! It’s enough pressure and stress to make the holidays not so fun anymore. We are starting to lose the value of the holiday – no matter what your belief system is. It’s about sharing and caring. It’s about giving thanks, being thankful and giving back. It’s about your family and your friendships. It’s a time of year that is truly magical; from the decorations placed around the community to the songs of the season. Even the Grinch and Scrooge were softened by the magic in the air. They just had to open their eyes, theirs ears and their hearts. For the past maybe seven years, I stopped decorating for Christmas to the chagrin of family and friends. Being too busy, being financially strapped and just being plain over the whole “Christmas” thang. Big boxes and plastic tubs stayed in the corner of the garage not seeing the light

of day to spread their delight and joy. However, even though I stopped decorating the house, and cut back on the spending, and the parties, I still made sure that Christmas music filled the air from Thanksgiving weekend until New Year’s Day. Something this simple kept my spirits uplifted and made me happy; not receiving the fancy or expensive gifts, not the getting further into debt by way overspending but the Christmas music. For 2016, I caved, finally succumbed to the pressure of getting back (fully) into the Christmas spirit! The Friday after Thanksgiving we went to the American Heritage Christmas Tree lot and actually, for the first time, got a REAL tree. We also had to buy new LED lights since mine have been boxed away for so long. But, I will admit, it was fun getting all the boxes out, cleaning the thick dust off and opening them up. It was like seeing old friends again. My beautiful traditional ornaments and decorations. We had a very enjoyable evening getting the tree in place and the decorations perfectly in place all while Frosty the Snowman and Frosty Returns played in the background. It’s the simple things that make the holidays so special. I want to wish you a Merry (not scary) Christmas season. Keep your eyes open to see the magic in the air. Keep your ears open to hear all of the special sounds of the season. And, finally, keep your heart open to allow yourself to be filled with the joy of the holidays with those that matter the most in your life.

EDITOR’S NOTE Awe... There is nothing better than a nice cold snap to snap you into the Holiday Spirit. When it comes to cold weather, I am no novice. Growing up near Buffalo, NY I have been through some of the worst winter weather you can image. But there is still something about that first day that the temperature drops and you get that giddy feeling that the Holidays are right around the corner. In this month’s issue we have a great restaurant review and a new Extreme Trampoline venue. Go check them out. As always, Expect More... Get More... We Deliver... MUSIC BAND PROFILE

any communities have that one musician that everyone knows. For us, here in Polk County, that player is Adrienne Richards. The bubbly songstress’ natural talent and musical aptitude has made her a regular at many a local haunt, as well as several high-profile venues in Central Florida and beyond. Her friendly inclusiveness extends to other musicians and people who love to go out to hear them play, prompting all who meet her to count her as a close personal friend.
Whether she’s performing with one of her duo projects or bands, with internationally renowned producers - like her husband - or around a campfire, her instinctive and unaffected vocals possess the ability to shine brightly on their own, couple flawlessly in sync, or highlight what is best in another, as if by some strange magic.
A true region talent, Adrienne took a few minutes to speak with me while, not surprisingly, on her way to a gig at Disney Springs. Here’s what she had to say:
 T&T MAG: You have a few 10 DECEMBER 2016

BY ANASTASIA J. ZIVIC

ADRIENNE RICHARDS A TRUE REGION TALENT projects that you work on locally and people you perform with - who are all of the musicians and what role do they play? How do the shows differ? ADRIENNE RICHARDS: There are two aspects to my musical life. Locally I do acoustic projects with friends. Travis Williams and I have Acoustic Dose, we’ve been doing that for almost 7 years now. And then I play with Walls, who are my friends Frankie Thacker and Chaz Saultz along with my husband Mike (Richards). I also do some shows with Mickenzie Peisher and Michael LuBecke (LuBeck). Everyone I play with acoustically are all my best

friends.
The other aspect of my musical endeavors is I’m a Drum and Bass (DNB) vocalist. I started out doing vocals for my husband Mike, who goes by the name Random Movement, and since then have had a dozen releases on both American and International labels with various artists within the genre. One of my favorite things about that is performing live at clubs and festivals with my husband. He DJs and I sing and hype the crowd. T&T MAG: Are you from Polk County? AR: I’m originally from Toronto,

Canada, I moved here in 1998 and I’ve been in the Winter Haven area since then.
T&T MAG: When did you first pick up an instrument? AR: About 5 years ago I picked up a guitar, but I played a piano when I was a kid. I still own the piano my dad got for me then. I was always into theater and singing when I was young, I was a big drama kid and did a lot of singing, but I had never picked anything up until that guitar. Recently I bought myself a drum kit! T&T MAG: Why did you decide to play the genre or genres you do? AR: My acoustic projects consist of a lot of cover stuff, but the original music I write myself on guitar is more of a singer/songwriter thing. It’s just an easy way for me to get out the words and music in my head, without having to put a lot of structure behind it. As far as the Drum and Bass music, I’ve always been a fan of the genre. I was a huge fan of my husband’s music way before I had even met him. I was a DJ back in the day, and I used to play his music. It’s really a dream

come true to sing on his music and collaborate with him. Drum and Bass has always been a big love of mine. T&T MAG: What has your favorite live-music performance been?
AR: Brooklyn, New York. I played at the Brooklyn Bowl along with Mike and some other big names in the (DNB) scene. A real dream come true! T&T MAG: What has the influence of music been in your life, outside of being a musician? Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? AR: Friendship, love and life and experiences mean a lot to me, and I like to write about them. It could be anything from a day out on the water in my kayak, to a kick-ass party. T&T MAG: Do you pick up a guitar and let it flow or write stuff down? AR: I like to write stuff down. Then I pick up a guitar and let it go. For my DNB music, it’s a bit of a different process. I’m usually given songs by a producer and my job is to write the lyrics, so sometimes I do that over the course of a few days. They’re not always necessarily personal. T&T MAG: What is your favorite thing about Polk County? AR: Definitely the lakes. I recently got a couple of kayaks and my friends and I go out all of the time – I love the water.

T&T MAG: Who are your favorite musicians in the area? AR: So many friends – so much good music. I like Daniel Heitz. He blew me away, I believe he is from Orlando. He’s a prodigy. Shout out to Spirit and the Cosmic Heart. Love them. T&T MAG: What is your dream gig? AR: I don’t know about a dream gig, but I’m about to get my green card and that will allow me to travel

back to Canada to play for my family and friends again. They’ve never heard me play live! Also, I have a lot of opportunities waiting for me in South America and Europe, so that will be something fun for me in the near future. T&T MAG: Okay, let’s get really personal! You are stranded on a deserted island and can have 3 albums. What are they? AR: Hummingbird by Local Natives, Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin and anything by Miles Davis.

SIGN UP FOR OUR NEW WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER AT WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

T&T MAG: We finish the interview and you step outside the office and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million. What would you do? AR: I would travel and put music back in the schools. I’d make sure every student either has the instrument or the opportunity. Big respect to the local charity “Play it Forward”, which does exactly that.
T&T MAG: There is a whole box of Teddy Grahams in a room all by themselves. Say I left them there and told you not to eat any until I got back. How long would it take you to disobey my wishes?
AR: 37 seconds. T&T MAG: About 7 seconds longer than I’d expect.
Thanks for your time Adrienne, you’re a real gem in the local music community and I encourage everyone to catch a show and some of that energy you put out whenever they can! You can learn more about Adrienne Richards, check for upcoming shows and hear some of her music online at:

BRIAN’S BRAIN

By Brian Bruchey

Bring On The Apocalypse 2016 has been quite the year. Not necessarily a good one, but it’s definitely been one that we’ll all remember for a long time. I can’t recall one quite like it really. For some people, 2016 will be a great year: New children, graduation, won the lottery (if this is you, feel free to name me as your beneficiary), or death of a longtime foe. For others, 2016 will go down as a horrible year. Death of a loved one, major injury, horrible break-up, unexpected news from the doctor about that itch that won’t go away. Usually, people remember years because of one or two major events. 1945 had World War Two. 1963 saw JFK assassinated. In 1969, man walked on the moon. And Star Wars debuted in 1977. You get the idea. There really wasn’t one super major, unusual, or unexpected news story this year. In twenty years, nobody will be saying, “I was sitting in Ms Clambaker’s class, when I heard President Trump say, “Grab them in the…elbow? Bellybutton? I can’t remember what he said twenty years ago, but yeah, it was in Ms Clambaker’s class, because I remember she fainted when Billy Bob read it out loud from the CNN website.” In twenty years, people will be saying “2036 was a weird year…but cheesy cow, nothing like 2016!” A lot of crazy things went down this year. We lost singers Prince and David Bowie, athletes Gordie Howe and Muhammad Ali, former First Lady Nancy Reagan, and actors Gene Wilder and Alan Rickman. Heck, we even lost actor Abe Vigoda, who everybody thought had died in the 70s, 80s, and again in the 90’s. On the flip side, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro finally bought the farm. Well, given his communist leanings, he more likely took the farm by force. 2016 saw one of the worst presidential races of all time. Sure, there

has been sleaze and mud-slinging before, but nothing like this year. We started with 17 Republicans, three Democrats, and a guy named Vermin Supreme, and finished with Donald Trump beating Hillary Clinton. I’m left thinking that we should have given Vermin Supreme a closer look. The people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, in a campaign referred to as “Brexit”. Angelina Jolie voted to take her little people, and leave her union with Brad Pitt, a bond known as Brangelina. Following the likes of West Nile Virus, Avian Bird Flu, Mad Cow Disease, and Ebola, 2016’s MediaDriven CootieFest was Zika. And as an added bonus, it was coupled with the Summer Olympics for extra media hype. Underscoring just how weird 2016 really was, we had the Chicago Cubs beating the Cleveland Indians in the World Series. I’m hoping 2017 will be a much less wilder, and a lot more milder. I’m thinking that’s not bound to happen though. Given that Donald Trump will be inaugurated on January 20th, that pretty much sets the stage for another interesting year. Kind of like America saying, “Hold my beer Canada, and watch this!” Brian “Father Time is getting senile” Bruchey QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS bruchey@gmail.com

DWAYNE’S PLACE Diner & Grill: With a Homestyle Feel

By Amy Sumerlin Photos By Chris Douglas The first thing I saw when I walked in was stacks and rows of delicious-looking, wonderfully aromatic pies. My first thought was, “Ah, time saver for Thanksgiving…” (This trip to Dwayne’s was just a couple of days before Turkey Day). But learn from my mistake: If you want to bring some pies home for Christmas, order early. Each and every pie on that counter had already been claimed. LUNCH Undaunted, we sat down for lunch in this delightfully homey restaurant. Marissa, our waitress, served up Southern hospitality and Daily Special suggestions right away. We started with the fried green tomatoes appetizer—yummy! This is important to me… if a restaurant serves Southern cuisine, there are two things that have to be perfect: Fried green tomatoes, and grits. They passed the fried green tomatoes test. Opting to save some carbs for the upcoming Thanksgiving feast, I didn’t take the day’s special, which was Beef Tips over Noodles ($9.99) but instead

chose the Grilled Pork Chops, with the seasonal vegetables and turnip greens for the side ($10.49). I was not disappointed—it was obvious the vegetables were fresh and the turnip greens perfectly seasoned. “Serving fresh food is extremely important to me,” explained Dwayne Williams, owner of the diner, which has been open for about three and a half years. “And I only serve the best brands available. My expectations of the food always have to be higher than my guests’,” he continued. The chops were cooked just right. My husband and my mom, who joined me that day, obviously weren’t as hungry as I was. Hubby chose the patty melt ($8.99) , a sandwich for which he has a weakness, with a side of onion rings. Just so you know, he is a picky eater. No, I mean he is really picky. And not only did he like both the sandwich and the onion rings, he said it was one of the best patty melts he had eaten in a long time. Mom decided to go for the BLT ($7.99), and while I wouldn’t say she’s generally picky, she is picky about her bacon. Crispy, it must be crispy. Marissa, whom I later learned is Dwayne’s sister, promised she would make sure that Mom’s bacon would come out just right, and indeed it did.

Freddy’s for 10 years, he remained in the food industry, but moved to Mutual Wholesale Company. During his career there, he rose through the ranks to management and, in the process, received a great education about logistics, warehousing, and distribution cycles for the industry… and he would also, from the relationships with vendors that he built, learn which ones delivered the best, freshest food. His next step was back to a restaurant; he was the Chief Operating Officer for a local buffet chain, playing a key role in its growth. “But I had a vision,” he said. “I really wanted to put all that I had

learned into building my own brand.” The result was Dwayne’s Place,

nestled on Florida Avenue South,

really closer to Mulberry than the Lakeland address suggests. He started by making sure the space was clean and comfortable – and it still is. Your kids will love the game room, and I will love it when their upcoming renovations, which include a dessert room, are complete. Why? Because in that dessert room, they will be making milkshakes called Pie Shakes— your favorite pie flavors delivered by straw. The restaurant is very much a family endeavor. Those pies I keep talking about? His wife, Liesel, and her assistant, Garcia Davis, are the masterminds of the desserts. In fact, he has two sisters, two brothers, and his daughter Jamie working with him. “Really, though,” he observed, “all of my staff is like family. A lot of them have been with us since the begin-

ning. ” EXPANSION: OLE TAMPA CUBAN Another place I will have to try soon is Dwayne’s newest venture, located just one mile south of Dwayne’s (713 N. Church St, Mulberry.) At this patio style sandwich shop, homemade Cuban sandwiches —of course they are made to order—and hand-rolled devil crabs are the go-to items. Call ahead/to go orders are also encouraged here. So next time you are looking for a great restaurant in this neck of the woods, try out Dwayne’s. “Visitors to my restaurants are more than guests; more than a transaction: They are my friends.” FMI: Dwayne’s Place Diner & Grill, 6960 Florida Ave S, Lakeland, FL 33813, (863) 940-2098.

HOW THE RESTAURANT CAME TO BE Dwayne started working in the restaurant industry before he could drive – when he was just 14. After working at the original (before it became a buffet) Buddy SIGN UP FOR OUR NEW WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER AT WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

Hatching Christmas Memories “And the Grinch, with his Grinchfeet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? Have you seen this year’s hottest Christmas toys “Hatchimals”? Take an old school Furby and breed it with a live chicken and you too can have a multi-million dollar toy empire. I am ashamed to admit, I watched for nearly 30 minutes as Dylan Dreyer from the Today Show tried to hatch her creature live. It appears American’s have lost their minds over these hatching wonders and Ebay is filled with plenty of sellers asking hundreds of dollars for the last remaining Hatchimals. It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. As the owner of five “real” hatchimals, it is easy to see why this toy is so popular. Baby chicks might be the cutest animals on the planet and the combination of anticipation and technology is a winning recipe. Selfishly, I am hoping this craze will lead to a greater appreciation of backyard flocks. And he puzzled and puzzled ‘till his puzzler was sore. The stress of consumerism during the holiday season is not a new phenomenon. My parents spent the entire 1982 Christmas season trying to find Cabbage Patch Kid for me because I had fallen in love with a display at a store called Children’s World

Ammo is a white and red male Australian Cattle Dog (Heeler) mix. He is approximately 8 months old. He has been neutered. Ammo is a hyper goofy boy. He has been around children and play with them, he is crate trained, and does well with dogs his size.

of original cloth Xavier Robert’s “Little People.” What drew me to the dolls was the store had

filled an actual playpen full of

these dolls and I was convinced

they were real babies. (You know you are from Polk County if you remember Children’s World in downtown Winter Haven).

Then the Grinch thought of

something he hadn’t before. What if

Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store?

KIKI

Kiki is a brown female Domestic Shorthair mix. She is approximately 10 months old. Kiki was found pregnant as a stray. She had her kittens and is now ready to find a home where she no longer has to know what its like to go hungry. She was a wonderful mom but its now her turn to get spoiled. She is litter box trained, likes canned cat food, and been around older children.

SUPERMAN

Superman is a black and white male Labrador Retriever mix. He is approximatley 1 year old. He is very playful. Superman loves car rides and gets along with dogs his own size. He is too playful for smaller and older dogs. He is very smart and would benefit from dog training. He is shy till he gets to know you then he will be your best friend.

In the early 1980’s Cabbage

Patch Kids were so hot; department stores actually had ticket lotteries where parents would

have to wait to see if their ticket

would be pulled just to purchase.

Unable to find a plastic doll in the stores, my parents sacrificed and

bought me Marsha Clarabelle, my beloved original cloth Cabbage Patch Kid and I am proud to

report, she is still with me today! We have even made the pilgrim-

age to Babyland General Hospital

SHEBA

Sheba is a calico female Domestic Shorthair mix. She was born on Sunday, February 17, 2013 and is 3 years old. She has been spayed. Sheba is a sweet little girl, shy and introverted but very loving when she knows you. Her owners had to move and could no longer keep her.

in Cleveland, Georgia with Marsha Clarabelle, in tow.

What if Christmas, perhaps, means

a little bit more.

Whether you find a Hatchimal

under your tree or reminisce

about your favorite childhood

toys, make your holidays merry

and bright! Wishing you the Best of New Year’s Blessings!

• It was noted American playwright and essayist Arthur Miller who gave the following sage advice: “Don’t be seduced into thinking that that which does not make a profit is without value.” • In the early 20th century, celebrated racehorse Man o’ War won 20 of his 21 career races. Interestingly, his one loss (often attributed to a terrible start and the extra weight he was carrying) was to a horse named Upset. • Statistically speaking, you probably live within 320 miles of the place you were born. • Have you ever experienced a social situation in which you have to introduce someone, but you can’t quite remember their name? In Scotland, there’s a word to describe the hesitation caused by that moment of panic: a tartle. • According to a poll conducted by outdoor recreation retailer Gander Mountain, almost half of all hunters have some kind of ritual they observe to increase their chances for a lucky hunt. Some hunters go the entire season without shaving, some start each hunt at a particular time, some kiss the first bullet, some do an “anti-rain” dance -- the variations are endless.

Researchers have found that couples who go on a honeymoon tend to have longer-lasting marriages than those who skip the trip -- no matter how much or how little you spend.

Cyber-Santa How many important emails have you missed because you get one 1 out of 100 LAST CHANCE for 80% off emails from the SAME company! Please! How can it be last chance if you are giving me so many chances? One day only...order before midnight… Wait a minute, didn’t I get the same one day only yesterday and the order before midnight at midnight last night? It’s confusing and clogs up email files worse than catalogs in the mailbox. Cyber-Santas beware, deals are everywhere most all of the time. “Last chance” like the ‘Going Out of Business” signs on stores that have been there for years. I can’t count the emails I have gotten not just for Cyber Monday, but before the holidays. They began back in September, before Halloween. Now, that is scary. The lag of time between when the shopping days of Christmas are closing in get farther and farther apart. On December 25 of this month, I hope someone has the humor to email me and say, “Only 365 days left before Christmas! Hurry! It’s only 52 weeks away! It has been the same amount of time since Christmas time began. When people ask, “How did Christmas get here so fast?” the answer is simple. A year is fast. Life is short. Life is precious. We only get 29,930 days on the planet if we live to be 82. Yikes! Talk about

scary. (I should have written that for Halloween.) Truth of it is, whether you are shopping online or waiting in ridiculously long lines for a great deal, the deal is, ENJOY it! If you are stressing, it’s not a blessing! Every day we get to give a gift is a gift in itself. Keep the emails coming and I will enjoy hearing the little tone ring every time it chimes when I get a new email. It’s like my own personal angel on the tree. Which last chance is it now? Is it for the furry moccasins, the fur-lined parka, the snow sled or anything else we don’t need here in Florida? What we do need here and everywhere is Christmas cheer. Please remember those who don’t even have an email address. Remember the forgotten and you will remember the blessing a long time from now. When you look for deals, that is the best deal of all. LAST CHANCE! Less than 12 months to go before next Christmas! Let’s take less time online and in line and more time with those we love or who need love.

GROVE ROOTS BREWING CO.

302 3rd St SW, Winter Haven T&T MAG: How long have you been a bartender? JULIA: Since we opened, so about 2 1/2 months. This is my first bartending job. T&T MAG: How did you become a bartender: JULIA: I love craft beer, and my family is close with the owner, Joe’s family, and I was really interested in being a part of everything! T&T MAG: What is your favorite thing about your job? JULIA: Definitely the social aspect. I’m usually kind of a homebody, so this job gives me plenty of opportunities to meet new people even though I grew up here, and so did my mom and her mom, etc. T&T MAG: What is one crazy thing you experience as a bartender? JULIA: Fortunately I’ve never had any negative encounters as a bartender because we’re a brewery and its not the typical scene a “bartender” would see! I do think its crazy to see how so many of the people I talk to have come from far and wide to visit the brewery! And our little town of Winer Haven! Its cool to hear the stories of their hometowns. T&T MAG: Your favorite drink to drink? JULIA: Alcoholic? Beer. T&T MAG: Your favorite beer at Grove Roots Brewery Co. and why? JULIA: Definitely “Toast”. I love them all, but our Oatmeal Brown Ale is amazing. Its not heavy, but its not too light either, which I like. I can drink it any time. T&T MAG: What is one thing the average person does not know about you? JULIA: I’m kind of an old hippie soul. I’m 23 but

I love older music and movies from the 1950’s. I’m also kind of obsessed with Bob Marley and his whole outlook on life. T&T MAG: Name something on your bucket list? JULIA: Hang out with an elephant. That’s number one for sure! T&T MAG: What do you do in your spare time? JULIA: In addition to working at Grove Roots I’m also a full-time student! So, if I have any spare time I usually like to just hang outside my house on my hammock with my dog and just chill. T&T MAG: Do you have any hobbies? JULIA: Anything outdoors. I love nature and the fresh air. T&T MAG: Who are you inspired by? JULIA: Probably so cliche, but definitely my mom. She’s like a superhero and she makes me a better person every day. T&T MAG: Pick one – Jumping from a plane, ice skating, rap battle, beach day? JULIA: Beach day. I’m totally a mermaid. T&T MAG: If you could pour a drink for anyone in the world, who would it be and why? JULIA: Bob Marley. Just so I could sit and listen to him talk. T&T MAG: Why should people come to your bar and have a drink? JULIA: There’s no place like this bar in Winter Haven, and maybe not even in Polk County. Its kind of hard to call it a bar because its so homey. You can bring your kids, meet up with old friends, bring your dog. Its kind of like a home away from home. T&T MAG: In closing, you’d like to say? JULIA: Hopefully, if you haven’t already, this will make you want to make your way to Grove Roots! It’s kind of the coolest place in town!

PORCH Music... The Gift That Keeps on Giving Christmas is right around the corner and why not give the gift that keeps on giving?!?! Music!!! I’ve selected three of the best releases from 2016 for your stocking stuffing pleasure! MIRANDA LAMBERT “THE WEIGHT OF THESE WINGS” The much anticipated double cd package was released last month to critical acclaim! Many wondered if this would be a “revenge” album at her former husband Blake Shelton… the answer is, not at all. I was four songs into the album before I realized that Miranda has yet to set anything on fire or shoot her boyfriend in her lyrics! Our little girl is growing up! I’m a big fan of story-telling and Miranda hits a home run with this release. It debuted on top of the Billboard Charts the week of its release. You will find maturity in her lyrics, and a wide melodic spectrum that leaves you impatiently wanting more! After listening to the album several times, I truly believe this is the most personal album Miranda has ever put out. Anderson East (Miranda’s new beau) wrote a passage about Miranda Lambert in the book that accompanies her new CD “The Weight of These Wings.” The passage reads ... “You could almost say God isn’t fair sometimes. For one person or in this case, one woman, to possess so many gifts at once seems otherworldly. The beautiful realization is that those gifts aren’t kept hidden, they’re on display and given so graciously to the world in a way that’s natural, effortless and sincere. This world would be a far more beautiful place if there were more people that possessed the heart, talent and more importantly, the love that she does. To know and witness her is a gift I will cherish forever and a day. If any of us are lucky enough to brush up against it, we should consider ourselves lucky.” GARTH BROOKS “THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION” This Target-exclusive 10-CD box set sold very strong in its first week (also released in November). The box set includes old hits, new songs, cover songs, live songs and more. You will get over 120 songs for under $30. The box set also includes Garth’s latest album “Gunslinger” with his current hit single “Baby Let’s Lay Down and Dance” on it. You don’t have to buy the entire box set to get Garth’s latest

32 DECEMBER 2016

CD, but gees…why not for that price!? On November 25th Gunslinger was released as its own standalone album to all physical retailers, as well as a digital and streaming album through Amazon. However, though his sales were tremendous with the box set…you won’t find it on Billboard charts. The price of the box set is $29.99 – so it falls below the minimum required price to chart ($3.49 for a single, or $3.49 times the amount of discs in a multi-disc box set, in the title’s first four weeks of release). Which is a bunch of mumbo jumbo political money making bologna that the average person doesn’t care about, and neither does Garth! He is quoted in saying “Hey, keep your chart. I’m not going to raise the price for the people to pay for the music just to be on somebody’s chart. That’s not my thing.” God Bless Garth. MARGO PRICE “MIDWEST FARMER’S DAUGHTER” Missing from mainstream radio and charts is this incredible vocalist from Illinois. She is everything the country music listeners have been begging for. She is the female version of Chris Stapleton. Unique. Country. Talented. She’s a songwriter’s dream and an outlaw to today’s country standards. I saw her perform at CountryFlo in November and was even more blown away by her crisp, clear voice. Margo’s album sits at Number 21 on Rolling Stone’s Best Albums of 2016. As I wrap up this article, I’ll leave you with a quote from Rolling Stone. “The CMA ignored Margo Price at their 50th awards show in November, but they did so at their own peril. This Illinois troublemaker’s debut album, released on Jack White’s Third Man Records, is a marvel from a modern outlaw. Price lays it all bare, singing in her Loretta Lynn yodel about the death of a child in “Hands of Time,” her skeevy experiences with Nashville music men in “This Town Gets Around” and, in “Weekender,” even a stint in the can. In a town where “honest” and “authentic” are thrown around to suggest credibility, Price needn’t even speak the words, she just lives them.”
