Count Your Blessings Thanksgiving is over, Christmas is around the corner, and following close behind it is a whole new year. The holiday season is a time when we all look back and contemplate on the past year and consider the many blessings we have in our lives. Count your blessings, they always tell us. It’s an easy platitude to say, but more often than not, it’s easier said than done. Too often, we focus so much on all the bad things in our lives that we forget to consider the good things, even if they’re few and far between. Believe me, I know how hard it can be. This past year saw the passing of my mother. Most of the other important family figures in my life have also long passed, including my father, all my grandparents, and my uncle. Everyone I grew up with and who raised me are now long gone, and save my extended family, I’m left alone. Last year, my best friend in the world cut ties with me for the dumbest reason ever. My attempts to extend an olive branch have only led to burned bridges, and my busy schedule makes the prospect of making new friends even more difficult. Finances have been tough, as it has been for us all. Inflation makes buying gas and food more costly, and, sadly, wages aren’t increasing with them. Health insurance has especially been a pain. Why do insurance companies insist on increasing premiums but not benefits? I can go on and list all my troubles. Believe me, they can fill an entire book! The past year has been depressing for me, and the anti-depressants don’t seem to be helping. Wish I could afford a therapist, let alone a flu shot, but not even my insurance seems to cover that. (Did I mention how much I hate my
insurance provider?) Often when I get depressed, I only make matters worse when I start remembering all the people who made my life miserable—and trust me, there have been plenty. The kindergarten teacher who was emotionally and physically abusive. The college roommates who kicked the crud out of me. The internet trolls that harassed me for the most innocuous opinions. The angry neighbor who threatened to sick their German Shepherd on me. And the best friend who now hates my guts because I called their goth friend who calls themselves a “Luciferian witch” on Twitter a “card-carrying Satanist.” (I guess there’s a difference?) Often, when I wallow in my misery, I forget about all the little good deeds people have done for me. My boss who mailed me a check to help pay for my car troubles. The resturant owner who treated me to dinner at their grand opening after I interviewed them. The friends of the family who treated me to an all-expense paid trip to the amusement park. And all the guests who attended my birthday celebration earlier this year to buy my books and give me gifts. Life is hard. Times are tough. Crap keeps piling up. So, it’s easy to get depressed about all the bad things going on in the world and in our own lives. But never forget the small acts of kindness other people have offered you. The big bad things are hard to miss, but the small good deeds are easy to. So, don’t forget to remember the good things people have done for you. Count your blessings this holiday season, and hopefully your new year will be merry and bright. 1. Name the last song released by Patience and Prudence. 2. Who released “The More I See You” in 1966? 3. Which group released “Get Back”? 4. Who were the Jordanaires? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “You’re looking kinda lonely girl, Would you like someone new to talk to?” ANSWERS 1. “Tonight You Belong to Me,” in 1964. The two sisters did well reviving a 1927 song that has since been widely used, including in a 2018 Google commercial and an episode of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” 2. Chris Montez. The song was
• Zip-top bags are essential when our family packs for holiday visiting. We use gallon-size bags for the kids’ outfits -- top, bottoms, underclothes, etc. -- and each bag holds one complete set. There is no suitcase chaos, as the bag comes out, and yesterday’s clothing goes in, ready for laundry day when we get home. Happy traveling. -- JoAnn • After Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up.
originally released in 1945 and has been covered by several others over the years, including Ella Fitzgerald and Andy Williams. 3. The Beatles with Billy Preston on electric piano, in 1969. An edited version was used in the concert film of the same name with Paul McCartney on his 1989-1990 tour. 4. The vocal quartet served as backup to Elvis Presley from 1956 to 1970 as well as backup for Patsy Cline from 1960 to 1963. 5. “Sharing the Night Together,” by Dr. Hook in 1976. The song was first released by Lenny LeBlanc and others, but it was Hook’s version that rose on the charts. • Here is a wonderful shopping tip that’s especially useful during holiday shopping but is something we do all year round: Spend your first hour or so browsing only. Nothing goes in the shopping cart or your bag, and no purchases. If, after you are ready to buy, you still remember the things you “had to have,” go back and make the purchases. -- M.M. in Arizona • A great storage container for fancy ornaments is a liquor box, which you can get for free outside of package stores. They have cardboard separators that make it easy to store glass bulbs. -- W.F. in New Mexico • I try to buy the same amount of presents for each of my grandchildren. I set a budget for each, and that carries me throughout the year, as I like to shop early for sales. One thing I do, though, is to take into account the value of the item if I get a super great deal. I think it makes it more fair for the rest of them. I haven’t had any complaints! -- Grandma, via email
