They say the best way to get to know someone is to travel with them. I don’t disagree. This past February I was lucky enough to be invited to a destination wedding in Jamaica. As a newcomer to a pretty tight-knit group of friends, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was friends with some of the other guests, and with the bride and groom, of course, but knew some of the other attendees through brief encounters only. Cue the excitement of travelling, add a few beers (plus some shots for good measure), sunshine, ocean, pooltime and games, and there you have it: instant bonds and immediate friendships. There is something about coming together in the spirit of love and adventure. When you’re planning your own destination wedding, you’ll get that vibe. Your family and friends will share in the excitement of your vows, but also in the anticipation and thrill of travelling to a foreign country, exploring a new place and experiencing new things as a group. It’s an honour to be invited to a wedding, but a destination wedding is different. Your guests will be thanking you for the experience for years.

BRIGHT IDEAS
POST-PANDEMIC DESTINATION WEDDING TRENDS
There are times that I feel like I’m watching a real-time, 360-degree camera focused on destination weddings because of my work on both the travel and planning sides of destination weddings. Since the beginning of the year, inquiries have dramatically increased on the destination side of the wedding industry as many couples have been waiting for more relaxed travel restrictions and protocols to confirm their plans. Here are some of the trends that are popping up as couples begin planning their destination weddings again. Whatever the reasons are for these changes, we are here for it and excited to jump back into planning dream celebrations.
1 Couples are getting more private, with celebrations on the water or secluded island. There is a definite request for privacy and some couples still have a need to just be with their own groups for their celebration, and a boat on the open sea or a celebration on their own private island gives them the confidence to really enjoy their wedding without anxiety. (Little known and fun fact: Jamaica, for example, is an archipelago made up of 28 islands, some of which are perfect to host private wedding celebrations. Imagine that: An island all to yourself. Now that’s privacy!)
2 There is a definite move towards more intimate weddings, which I feel will become a staple for a few years. Couples are very focused on spending time with just family and close friends because they have not been able to do that consistently for the past two-plus years. Even when there are requests with a bigger guest list, couples are focused on a design that reflects intimacy. Clients are doing weddings their way and are not being constrained by wedding etiquette and traditions. They are keen on creating new rules that they deem appropriate for their inner circle and the new life they are building as a couple.

3 Natalie John of Dreamy Weddings in Saint. Kitts, says she has seen a definite surge in groom involvement in planning. Space has been created for grooms to add their personality and style, which is great, because design and décor is getting bigger. Couples are more focused on a more opulent look and feel. This could be attributed to postponed events. Some couples may have been able to put aside more savings over the last couple years and are wanting to create their dream wedding.
5 A full weekend or multiple days of celebration is still very present and has now become a regular request so that couples can squeeze every drop of connection and together time in their wedding weekend. Franciene Foster of Jamaica Wedding Concierge says that couples are happy to spend a bit more to add in different elements and curate epic wedding getaways that include pre- and post-ceremony events, as well as excursions for their entire group in destination.

According to travel designer Vanessa McKnight of Unforgettable Escapes, there has been an increased interest in creating travel registries in lieu of wedding gifts for her clients. At recent bridal shows, she has seen interest from couples who want to know more about the process and how to create a travel registry.

Fifty guests travelled to Riviera Maya, Mexico from British Columbia and Ontario to see this couple exchange vows at Blue Venado Beach Club. The bride (who wore an Enzoani gown) and groom describe the whole trip as a love letter to their family and friends.
D EST I NAT I ONWEDDINGM AGAZINE .CA • 14
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED: Planning and organizing weddings comes easily to Jelena, however, planning a destination wedding threw a couple curveballs. “The challenging part with planning a destination wedding was that I relied heavily on social media and user reviews to help with vendor selections. I cannot stress the importance of doing research on your vendors, reading reviews and looking at photos for inspiration.” THE FIRST LOOK: “You will have first look nay-sayers, but I am here to tell you, that if you do one thing, do a first look,” says Jelena. “I promise you wont regret it. Having that moment of just you two before the wedding is incredibly special.” A LOVE LETTER: Having postponed due to COVID, this wedding was extra special. “Our wedding was a love letter to our guests,” says Jelena. “Dwayne and I did not take it lightly that people took time off work, away from their families, in the middle of a worldwide pandemic to come to Mexico to celebrate our wedding. And so every design and detail took into account the guest experience.” VENDOR LOVE: Locally, Nicole from A Destination Wedding took the reins, and in Mexico, Miguel from Blue Venado Weddings took over. WILL TRAVEL: Have your heart set on a Canadian vendor? Ask them to come along! In this case, the wedding was planned by Rebecca Chan and photographed by Nadia Hung – both Canadian!
POST-COVID PLANNING: “Since we weren’t entirely sure whether we would be able to get married because of the pandemic, we made the majority of the decisions within three months of the wedding date,” says Justina. “It was pretty stressful not being able to feel, touch or taste what we were choosing but at the same time, it wouldn’t matter if the décor or food sucked – because we would have been one of the lucky few to get married.” THE PERFECT SPOT: Justina says her favourite thing about the wedding was the beautiful venue itself. “The experience is surreal. We were also blessed with a light spritz of rain during the ceremony – it was as if my grandma was telling me she was watching over me that day. The venue speaks volumes and doesn’t need much décor; it alone is an experience unlike any other.”

INTERNATIONAL LOVE: The couple’s best friend helped to officiate the wedding. He came down the aisle after the bride, with a Canadian and American flag draped over each arm.
LUCKY LOONIES: After meeting on vacation, these two lovebirds instantly had a connection, bonding over the Buffalo Bills. After a few short days, they had an emtional goodbye at the resort. Kelly gave Ashleigh a loonie, hoping it would bring them both luck and they’d see each other again. One year later, Ashleigh relocated to Calgary and moved in with Kelly. FUN IN THE SUN: This wedding was all about the fun. Ashleigh says, “My niece threw flower petals and gave Pink Whitney shots to the guests while walking down the aisle. We were “iced” at the altar by our officiant and Kelly and I had an outfit change for the “Shout Song” – we changed into our Buffalo Bills gear, as that is our favourite football team.” DRESS TO IMPRESS: Gown by Allure and suit by RW & Co.

Say “Oui” To A French Riviera Wedding
Titans of business, Hollywood stars, and even real-life princes and princesses have planted roots the French Riviera, that fabled coastline of southern France sprawling between tiny Saint-Tropez on the west and the Italian border to the east. Also called the Côte d’Azur, it has inspired artists and writers such as Chagall, Matisse, Picasso, and Fitzgerald who found their muses in the red and chalk cliffs, verdant olive groves and vines, and the 50 shades of turquoise and sapphire of the Mediterranean Sea. Brides and grooms are also inspired and it’s easy to see so many fall head-over-heels for saying “I Do” on the French Riviera. An international airport in Nice and a TGV train from Paris means it’s easy to lure visitors too, and guests, friends and family, are spoiled for choice when it comes to making the best of celebrating the big day far away. From posh seaside hotels and palaces with gardens to tucked away cozy inns and quirky under the sea nuptials, the French Riviera serves up all the ingredients for an unforgettable destination wedding.

LOVE AND LUXURY
If there’s one thing the Côte d’Azur delivers in droves it’s over-the-top style, and the antique and art-filled pink Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on stunning Cap-Ferrat doesn’t disappoint. The magnificent palace was built in 1912 and is surrounded by nine themed gardens that are idyllic for photos, hand-in-hand strolls, and receptions for up to 300 guests. The nearby Four Seasons Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat has been throwing glamorous affairs since 1889 and can host guests in its 74 rooms and suites. But for couples who live for gourmet and custom experiences, Amavia Collection’s new six-bedroom Villa Gaia, just a 10-minute drive up the hill, has upped the ante on exclusivity with Michelin-star food and five-star service under one roof. Swoon over the unobstructed Cap-Ferrat and yacht views, from the well-appointed home boasting original art, an outdoor infinity pool and kitchen, private terraces and balconies, plus a gym, sauna and cinema. A 24/7 concierge can arrange transport, organize wine and cocktail tastings or daily yoga and massages, and plan excursions to nearby villages, wineries and beaches. Villa Gaia’s pièce de résistance, however, is its partnership with Michelin-star chef Alain Llorca, the renowned Provençal chef who curates the villa’s lunch and dinner menus, which are executed by an onsite chef and paired with a private wine stash. The villa can accommodate guess for a small but sublime wedding party lunch or family dinner. They could also arrange a larger and more raucous soirée at their private beach club near Monaco. Speaking of Monaco, it doesn’t get more fairytale than this picturesque enclave that turned the late American actress Grace Kelly into a princess when she married H.S.H Prince Rainier III in 1956. A train goes from Nice to Monaco. Once there, a network of eco-friendly and efficient buses crisscrosses the world’s second smallest country with ease, making it a breeze to visit the haute couture boutiques, exceptional museums, gorgeous public gardens, and historic sites such as the white byzantine cathedral in Monaco’s where Prince Rainier married Princess Grace, and the Prince’s Palace, official residence of the current sovereign. Riviera’s swankiest hotels and restaurants are found in Monaco too. But if quirky is what you’re after, then book at the Hotel Metropole just off the Casino Square, where an underwater wedding (SCUBA gear included) can be organized for up to 20 guests. The wet-and-wild nuptials are followed up by a catered champagne lunch on the beach for those invitees who prefer to stay dry. To add a simple touch of royal romance to your day, order a small box of two crown-shaped chocolates from the Chocolaterie of Monaco.

RELAXING VIBES
Despite its glitz-and-glam reputation, the French Riviera has a relaxed side too, one where country inns, toes-in-sand dining, and a rosé-all-day vibes are the perfect wedding accessories. For example, tucked behind Pampelonne’s trendy beach clubs of Ramatuelle is the utterly charming La Campagne Des Jumeaux, a family farmhouse-turned-B&B with five bedrooms set in a vast pastoral setting. An outdoor pool is ideal for visitors and four-minute walk down the path leads straight to the sandy beach. Meanwhile, Château Sainte Roseline is one of the most beautiful wine estates in the Var, and an ideal place to celebrate love with 30 of your closest friends, or up to 1,000 if you choose. Indulge your guests with tours and tastings, and there’s even an onsite chapel for photos. A perk to this venue, besides its stunning good looks, is the location, just a few-minutes’ drive from the Les Arcs train station as well as the pretty village of Lorgues, with its famous Tuesday farmers’ market and beloved Chez Bruno restaurant and hotel, a Michelin-star locale specializing in truffles. Between Saint-Tropez and Cannes, simple elegance on the seaside doesn’t get better than La Roche Rouge, whose mid-century modern aesthetic is inspired by the blues of the Mediterranean, the ochre-orange of the Estérel, and the Côte d’Azur’s persistent lemon-yellow sunshine. The entire hotel can be yours and host up to 60 guests who can watch you exchange vows on the private beach then dance and dine overlooking the sea on a private terrace. The hotel also has a spa, saltwater pool, restaurant Récif for Michelin-star meals and sea-facing rooms, too.

LOVE IS LOVE in Yucatán FAMOUS FOR ITS MAYAN CULTURE AND NATURAL BEAUTY, THIS MEXICAN STATE IS NOW A WELCOMING SPOT FOR LGBTQ+ WEDDINGS
WHEN WE THINK OF MEXICO AS A DESTINATION WEDDING, IT’S OFTEN AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF WHITE-SAND BEACHES and turquoise water in Riviera Maya, Cabo San Lucas or Cancun. But venture further inland into Mexico’s southeastern Yucatán Peninsula and you’ll discover a mystical mecca of historic properties and luxury resorts in Yucatán state, ideal for hosting an epic fiesta with the love of your life. And, finally, LGBTQ+ marriages are now legal in the state as of March 2022, making it a welcoming place for all couples and guests. Here’s just a sampling of reasons to consider Yucatán for your upcoming nuptials.

In planning for the big day, Yucatán offers the gamut of possible wedding locals welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community – from historic, refurbished haciendas you can affordably rent out for you and your guests, to luxe, five-star resorts and spas where every detail is taken care of. For a truly intimate affair, try the Casa Azul in Izamal, a private, one-bedroom love nest with an ancient Mayan pyramid and plunge pool in its backyard. If you’re expecting guests, the Hotel Rinconada del Convento just around the corner, offers 12 rooms and a lush outdoor garden that can hold up to 450 guests. Couples can also access catering services that specialize in local Yucatán cuisine for the perfect wedding fare. If exchanging vows in a historic hacienda is on your wish list, The Haciendas from the Luxury Collection offer three in Yucatán to choose from. The Hacienda Temozon Sur, for one, features indoor and outdoor wedding options, as well as the chance to pamper yourself beforehand with a spa treatment by candlelight in a cenote onsite (see more on cenotes below). Another popular spot is the Hacienda San Antonio Hool in Mérida, which dates back to the 17th century and has capacity to fit from 12 to 700 wedding guests. Keen to be one (or two) with nature? Yucatán’s newly opened Oriundo Luxury Nature Villas in Valladolid feature guest rooms carefully designed to blend with the natural terrain of the surrounding jungle, as well as a magical outdoor space to accommodate marriage celebrations. For a wedding spot and first-class resort all in one, Chablé Yucatán won’t disappoint. Tucked away in the tiny town of Chicola, the spacious grounds provide a setting that is serene and romantic. The spa centres around a private cenote with modern amenities, while the rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto opulent garden views. Chablé staff will also provide suggestions for wedding planners experienced in working with LGBTQ+ guests. SINK INTO A CENOTE The Yucatán Peninsula is filled with thousands of deep, Mother Nature-made, freshwater wells (sink-holes) called cenotes, which the ancient Mayans believed to be the entrance to an underworld where the gods would visit. The water, filtered by surrounded rocks dating back thousands of years, is clean and especially refreshing on hotter days. At the Zazil Tunich, a cavern-cenote in Valladolid, you can pre-arrange for a romantic three-course dinner at the bottom of the cave and opt for a traditional Mayan Purification Ceremony before a private swim in the cenote. Don’t worry if you’re a beach lover. There are still plenty of ocean swimming spots in

TANTALIZE YOUR TASTEBUDS Mayan and Spanish influences mark the vibrant flavours of Yucatán cuisine. Try a bevy of delicious fillings for the many hand-rolled, corn tortillas you’ll be sampling, including cochinita pibil (shredded pork shoulder or loin) typically served with refried beans, pickled red onion and habanero chilli. At some restaurants like the Museo de la Gastronomia Yucateca in Mérida, guests can watch (and later sample) the traditional making of cochinita, which involves slowly roasting the seasoned meat in banana leaves for extra flavour. At the hacienda Temozon Sur, you can even sign up to learn the fine art of hand-rolling your own tortillas. Sopa de lima, a refreshing and flavourful chicken broth-based lime soup, is another Yucatán favourite served as a starter at most restaurants. Try it at the Gastronomia Yucateca Viva Teya in the heart of Mérida, where it’s served with shredded chicken and crispy tortilla strips and complements an interesting variety of traditional and modern menu options. Mexico for travellers, but Yucatán has several picturesque cities to explore with their own unique attractions, markets, museums and notable eateries. You’d be remiss not to take the time to meander through its largest city of Mérida. Pick a central spot like the pretty Villa Mercedes hotel as your base, and book a walking or mini-bus tour to take in the colonial architecture and Mayan relics. Be sure to check out the iconic El Minaret, a French-style mansion and event space (they do weddings too) that dates back to 1908 and features a watchtower you can climb for a stellar view. Get another perspective by venturing into the smaller – and very walkable – cities of Izamal and Valladolid. Explore Izamal’s Convento de San Antonio de Padua, a majestic monastery built between 1549–1561 that covers 7,800 metres, and then get some stellar photo opps amidst the city centre’s almost exclusively yellow-painted buildings. Be sure to end the day with a cocktail and an awesome view of Valladolid on the rooftop of Don Diablo terrace bar. And if you opt to stay the night, the Hotel Mesón del Marqués offers a lovely, romantic reprieve. For more information on planning your wedding in Yucatán, visit Yucatan.travel.

ROMANCE IS BETTER IN THE BAHAMAS
Love never goes out of style and The Bahamas is the perfect place to celebrate it. Only 48 nautical miles from the United States, two international airports, direct airlift from Europe, Latin America, Canada and the United States and two major ship ports, The Bahamas is an easily accessible destination with many hidden gems to host a spectacular awe-inspiring wedding or an unforgettable honeymoon. Amidst all the stress of choosing colour schemes (What colour is eggplant anyway?) and bridesmaids, menus and cake tastings, we want to make choosing a destination a little easier for you. The Islands Of The Bahamas await with a tropical climate that offers mild winters and high temperatures all year round.
istockphoto.com
The perfect location for intimate and quaint to grandiose and over-the-top, The Bahamas is ready to accommodate any size or style of wedding. While beach weddings are the usual favourite, couples can opt for the old-world charm and sophistication. The Capital, Nassau, offers stunning locations for picturesque weddings including the infamous Queen’s Staircase, a historical landmark located at the Fort Fincastle or The Cloisters at Ocean Club on Paradise Island, the remains of a 12th-Century French Augustinian Monastery. Opt for a traditional cathedral wedding at any of the local Cathedrals for a royal affair. The beauty of this multi-island destination is in being able to marry on one island and honeymoon on another. Not having the hassle of planning two entirely separate itineraries or being burdened with clothing for two different climates, choosing The Bahamas makes it easy and breezy. You can marry in Nassau and honeymoon in Exuma or you can exchange your nuptials in Freeport and sail throughout the other islands, from Inagua to Eleuthera. While your love is renewed every day and your marriage gets stronger every year, you only get one shot at the wedding you dreamed of. Make it count. Will do! THESE 12 TIPS WILL HELP TO GET YOU THROUGH THE DESTINATION WEDDING PLANNING PROCESS.
4 Do buy travel insurance, including any necessary COVID-specific insurance and trip cancellation insurance.
4 Do not think, “It won’t happen to me. I will be safe!” You don’t want pricey medical care in a foreign country.
4 Do get your save-the-dates out there as soon as you select your wedding day. Give your guests plenty of time to book time off work, find childcare and save their dollars.
4 Do not get offended if people RSVP with a no. A destination wedding is a big ask for some people and you shouldn’t question their reasons for declining.
4 Do hire a planner and a travel agent. It’s very possible that you can handle all the planning yourself, but eliminating the stress will be worth it. Leave the details to the experts while you sit back and enjoy your wedding.
4 Do not stay quiet. If you have questions or requests, speak up. When you arrive to your resort or property, take a tour as soon as you can. If the ceremony location or any other details are not what you envisioned, have a conversation.
4 Do bring small décor items to make your reception your own: pre-printed menus, place cards, and table numbers are small and easy to pack, plus will make an impact.
4 Do not ship every décor item you can think of (lighting, candles, florals) to the resort ahead of time. They likely have nowhere to store it and the shipping will be costly.
4 Do surprise your guests with a welcome bag and goodies – an itinerary, sunscreen, hangover kit, monogrammed sunglasses or insulated cup. Maybe a bottle of wine in the room. These items are sweet and appreciated.
4 Do not plan your guests’ every moment. Sure, it’s your wedding, but they don’t owe you all their time. Keep them aware of must-attend events, but allow them some space to venture off on their own, or have their own down-time.
DO PLAN A HONEYMOON.
Don’t forget that this is about marrying your person. Yes, a destination wedding is an epic vacation, but the true reason you’re travelling is to say, “I do!” Make time for a romantic adventure or two – newlyweds only!

A destination wedding is an incredible experience with the people you love, but you’ll want some one-on-one time with your spouse when it is all said and done. If you have the ability, switch to a new resort or property for an extra week, just the two of you.
