Reed Midem launches MIPDrama Screenings Reed Midem has announced the launch of MIPDrama Screenings, a showcase that will take place before Miptv with the aim of offering buyers an exclusive look at some of the most awaited shows in the market, from the 4th to the 7th of April 2016 in Cannes, France.
T
his new segment, designed to satisfy the growing demand for high quality drama shows from around the world, will take place Sunday April the 3rd before Miptv. Close to 250 acquisitions executives from around the globe will be invited to take part in this day dedicated to the international scripted entertainment market, to offer exclusive previews from those dramas launched at Miptv. The opening ceremony will present the current state of the drama industry, highlighting the worldwide success of the past six months and offering an outlook on the most relevant sales. Later, MIPDrama will offer screenings from new content with a focus on the European countries (United Kingdom, Germany, Nordic countries, among others), apart from other major content producers. Networking events will take place during the entire day so that buyers may meet with distributors. “This new initiative is a response to the growing demand from our clients to discover new content before the market begins. This need goes hand in hand with the creativity boom that has led to the emergence of high quality drama productions in many countries,” said Laurine Garaude, director of Reed Midem’s Television Division.

Considered Best Channel in Latin America During the fourth edition of LA Cumbre TV Abierta, the strategic event about TV that welcomes managers from major broadcast networks, creative agencies, media centrals and advertisers from around Latin America, Telefe was named Best Channel of 2015. The ceremony for the Premio Creatividad Innovación Televisión 2015 was held on August 31 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as a celebration to the best use of broadcast TV in its different platforms and to highlight the professionals capable of implementing commercial initiatives that meet clients’ expectations and, mainly, that manage to captivate them. Telefe submitted three cases of brand integration for the awards, all of which were finalista in the four categories.

The Voices Behind the Success Universal Cinergia Dubbing has been a key cog in the Turkish content juggernaut. The company takes pride in being one of the first dubbing studios to support the introduction of Turkish content into Latin America. For the last 3 consecutive years, Universal has provided producers, distributors and TV channels with over 3,000 hours of Turkish content in series and soap operas. Universal Cinergia ventured in this kind of content, attending Discop Budapest and Discop Istanbul since 2013 and working with each of them in the success of these productions. fter the success achieved in 2014, for the second edition of MipCancun, which will be held during the 18-20 of November at the JW Marriot Cancun Resort & Spa, in the idyllic Cancun (Mexico), organizers have upped the ante, adding new offerings to take the incipient tradeshow to a new level. This year, the second gathering for TV companies and international programming distributors that operate in the Latin American market, promises to settle as a 360° event, which already has over 80 Latin based operators -from over 20 regional countries- confirmed, and 86 international con-
tent distribution companies. This year’s slogan will be “Pasión for Latin American TV”. In this sense, the one-on-one encounter between executives responsible for acquisition and programming departments and international distributors have doubled their presence, and will add an interesting number of participants from Argentina, Brazil and Mexico which will contact companies such as Azteca, Televisa Internacional, Cisneros Media Distribution, Telemundo Internacional, Globo, FremantleMedia, BBC Worldwide, Sky Vision, All3Media International and delegations from France, Turkey and Korea.
THEY COME FROM ALL ACROSS LATIN AMERICA In total, according to the MipCancun organization, 2015 has seen the confirmed attendance from more of 85 buyers, which come from over 20 regional countries. Out of all attending companies, 33 are returning from last year and 50 are coming for the first time, as is the case with Televisa Internacional, Google or Rede Record. Also, among the new buyers there are names such as Turner Broadcasting System Latin America, Canal Once, Discovery Networks Latin America/US Hispanic, Latina, Univision and Venevision, among others.
According to the organization, in terms of genres, MipCancun will see 42 companies seeking dramas, 36 seeking documentaries, 35 for formats, 34 for kids’ content and 25 looking for movies. Mexico will be the most represented, with thirteen companies, followed by Argentina and Brazil with ten companies each. PASIÓN FOR TV CONTENT. The conference program entitled “Pasión por el contenido de televisión” - in association with ProMexico-, will delve deep into the audiovisual production process in and for the Latin market. Some of the key issues up for debate will be the way in which Latin American and Hispanic companies are reformulating their strategies to satisfy the demands of newer audiences,
seeking for attractive programming for local and pan-regional audiences, in addition to analyzing the best practices for development and production of regional projects targeting digital natives. Among the lineup of industry leaders that will be present during the MipCancun 2015 conferences, certain names stand out, among which there is Enrique Martínez, General Director and President of Discovery Networks Latin America/US Hispanic and Canada; Jorge Stamadianos, Chief of Development and Production for FOX International Channels Latin America; Jorge Granier Phelps, executive producer for ‘Jane the Virgin’ by RCTV Venezuela; Nadav Palti, CEO, Dori Media; and Roy Ashton, Chief of the Literary TV Department at Gersh Agency.

TURKISH DRAMAS SAY YES TO CANCUN Another of MipCancun’s 2015 peculiarities will be the presence of a block of Turkish production and distribution companies, which continue to strengthen their relationship with Latin American operators and reaping the fruits of having been Country of Honor during Mipcom 2015. Thus, dramas from Turkish Radio & TV (TRT) Calinos Entertainment, ITV Inter Medya, Kanal D, Global Agency and Eccho Rights, will have certainly have their highlighted space during the event.
According to MipCancun’s director, the conference program has been designed “to quickly comprehend the television market in Latin America and help grow business”. Furthermore, during the ample networking opportunities attendants will also have “unique access, in a unique environment, to some of the main companies in the Latin American Region,” concluded Baracos. ttv

uring the past Mipcom, Mediatoon Distribution was present as one of the many major companies in the tradeshow. Specializing in animated content, the company presented two of its biggest developments this year: the adaptation of the popular series ‘Bobby & Bill’, and the live action film adaptation of ‘Valerian & Laureline’, from acclaimed French director Luc Besson. ttv interviewed Jerome Alby, managing director of the company, who highlighted what will be the third adaptation of the famous French-Belgian comic about three inseparable friends.

At Mipcom, Mediatoon also announced that renowned director Luc Besson acquired the rights to its popular series ‘Valerian & Laurine’, which has 40, 26-minute episodes. Besson expects to release his live action version in the summer of 2017 under the title ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ focusing on the time-travelling duo of Valerian and his partner Laureline as they are sent to investigate a galactic empire.

“It is a known comic that got its first television version in the 70s’, then in the 90’s, and now in its latest CGI version. In addition, Philippe Vidal is the series director, who is best known for ‘The Garfield Show’, the animated version of the famous cartoon character,” said the executive.
The feature, which will also be produced and adapted by Besson, has already cast its two main time-traveling leads. Cara Delevingne (‘Paper Towns’), who will be playing Laureline and Clive Owen (‘The Knick’) who will play Valerian.
The series is expected to become available for distribution in April 2016, focusing on children in the 5+ demographic, who will be captivated by the stories of Bobby and his two constant companions, Bill, his Cocker Spaniel and Caroline, his skateboarding tortoise.
With these new projects being added to the company’s catalogue, Mediatoon is reinforcing one of its main strengths, to offer a slate of content that is alternative to content coming to and from Latin America and that has a distinctive European flavor.

s one of the main players responsible for the growing popularity of Turkish content around the world, ITV Inter Medya has conquered international audiences through enthralling dramas like ‘Endless Love’, ‘Black Money Love’, ‘Resurrection’ or ‘Filinta’. “Our culture has been influenced by many different cultures for centuries, so that’s why
we have really good stories to tell,” said Ahmet Ziyalar, Managing Director of ITV Inter Medya, who spoke to ttv at the last edition of Mipcom in Cannes. “In the last couple of years, we’ve learned how to tell these stories on TV very well, so that’s why Turkish dramas are very strong all over the world,” he added. While very much aware of the success and demand for Turkish dramas, the company was present at Mipcom with an entirely new product line, ready to expand its business even further, presenting for the very first time, a catalog of entertainment formats. “We brought new formats designed and developed by ourselves as ITV Inter Medya,” Ziyalar said. “The first is a quiz show called ‘Answer If You Can’, the most entertaining quiz show ever as far as I can say.” In ‘Answer If You Can’, contestants are asked questions and compete for a big prize. But in order to do everything they can to obstruct them from giving the right answers, the

The company also presented ‘Celebrities in the Kitchen’, which as the name suggests, sees celebrities outside of their element, performing in the kitchen. Each week, professionals of the culinary arts will train celebrities in everything from presentation strategies to baking techniques. And at the end of the week, they will work their magic for the fussy jury of chefs who will choose the chef of the week.

Last but not least, ITV Inter Medya presented a new sports show, designed especially for fans, called ‘The League’. Of course, in addition to the new formats and game shows, the company still continues to roll out the international success of its hit drama series, ‘Endless Love’. Produced by Ay Yapim and broadcast by Star TV, The HD drama tells the story of two young lovers who come from opposite worlds. ‘Endless Love’ was presented at Mipcom along with ‘In Between’, ‘Black Rose’ and ‘20 Minutes’. ttv

n 2001, Calinos Entertainment pioneered the business model that has now become a global trend. The company was the first to sell Turkish content abroad: ‘Wild Heart’, the action-drama about an ordinary man with strong moral values and dreams of building an honest society, was sold to Kazakhstan.
After it got the ball rolling, Calinos -and every other distributor in Turkey- has expanded its reach around the globe. “The trans-nationalization of Turkish dramas has made Turkey a global brand in cultural consumption; in turn, this phenomenon, I believe, will pave the way for many new and diverse co-productions and joint ventures,” said Besir Tatli, General Manager of Calinos Entertainment. After being part of the Turkish delegation that was exalted at Mipcom 2015, were Turkey participated as “Country of Honor,” Calinos is looking forward to ending the year strong and trusting its growing lineup of dramas to keep its formidable run in Latin America. “As Calinos, we have succeeded to leave footprints in many territories; however, we have mainly dominated the markets in the CIS countries and the Balkans. ‘Homeless’ Arte Sales is ready for MipCancun with ‘Homeless’, its first animated series from Chilean partner Fabula. Described as the “next ‘South Park’”, the new title is sure to attract the international market’s attention and show that Arte Sales is much more than documentaries. rte Sales is about to take the international market by storm with ‘Homeless’, a provocative animated series from Chilean company Fabula. Juan de Dios Larrain, the series producer and Audrey Kamga, Sales Manager for Arte Sales, spoke to ttv about what makes this project so unique. “It’s the first animated series with crude and politically incorrect humor to be made in Chile, a very conservative country with an emerging animation industry, which made the production process difficult and slow,” said de Dios Larrain. “When the creators of ‘Homeless’ approached us with the idea we realized that they had a very original and irreverent idea on their hands. Besides, we had never done animation before, and we were excited by the challenge,” he added.
“We knew that selling this sort of animation could be complicated. But we were confident that our product was something completely original and outrageous,” said the producer, who also revealed Fabula has decided to pursue the story and characters with the development of a feature-length film inspired by the series.
‘Homeless’ is Arte’s first animated drama but is also its first collaboration with a Latin American
Producer, which will promote the company’s relationship with the region. “We have strong relationships in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia. We’re extremely happy and proud to present this native Spanish-language series at MipCancun, it’s the perfect place to launch the series,” Kamga added. “There are always high stakes involved as we’re always expecting -and asking for- more. But yes, this series is especially close to my heart, and the sky is the limit!” she concluded. ttv

The series then came to Arte Sales during the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and was added to the catalogue as part of the company’s strategy to include drama and short content. It also marks the first collaboration between both companies.
Audrey Kamga, from Arte Sales, shares the excitement: “’Homeless’ is the legitimate heir of ‘Beavis & Butthead’ or ‘South Park’. At the same time it’s also a humoristic reflection of the social reality of today’s world. The potential audience is therefore rather large, and allows us to target entertainment networks where most of our docs wouldn’t find a home.”

Distribution Agreement
Telemundo Internacional has announced the conclusion of an agreement that will turn the company into the exclusive distributor of HBO Latin America’s (LAG) original productions in the European, Middle Eastern, Asian, African and Oceanic markets beginning January 2016. The announcement came during the first day at Mipcom 2015 in the Palais des Festivals. The deal strengthens an alliance that began in June 2014, when HBO LAG, was named the exclusive affiliate sales representative for Telemundo Internacional’s network throughout most of Latin America. Later, in July 2015, HBO LAG was made responsible for the distribution of NBCUniversal International channels in all Hispanic regions through Latin America. Telemunfo Internacional will have the representation of the complete catalogue of fiction and documentaries from HBO LAG in the assigned countries, starting by ‘O Hipnotizador’, ‘Magnífica 70’, ‘El Negocio’ y ‘Psi’ - exclusive shows that, until now, had only been aired by HBO and that will become available through January 2016 for distribution.

he world’s fastest-growing middle class resides in Africa. That fact might surprise many that still see the continent as an example of economic disparity, political instability and widespread poverty. Although many of those problems persist, particularly in countries like Congo, a region-wide phenomenon has been taken place during the past three decades, allowing for the growth of a booming middle class ready to shift the country’s role in the international market. According to Deloitte, Africa’s middle class has tripled over the last 30 years, with many of its countries listed among the fastest growing

economies in the world. Deloitte predicts that Africa will have 42% of its population over the poverty line by 2060. According to the McKinsey Global Institute, those factors will generate a boom in consumer spending, taking it from US$ 860 billion in 2008 to US$ 1.4 trillion in 2020. As stated earlier, this might surprise many, but not everyone. Since 2008, Discop Africa has been playing a key role as the bridge between African and international entertainment companies, delivering exposure and networking opportunities to players from all over the world.

A few days after its arrival in Japan, Netflix announced new launches in Asia, with four new territories set for 2016. The streaming giant is reaching South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan, for a total of five territories in Asia. The company is also present in New Zealand and Australia, and was launched in Italy, Spain and Portugal in October. With these new announcements, Netflix is well on its way to meeting its goal of “being virtually all over the world” by 2017

‘Fear the Walking Dead’ Makes History Going well above the most optimist of expectations, the finale of ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ shot the series to the top, helping it achieve the title of the most successful season in the history of Pay TV in the US. With an average of 11, 2 million viewers in Nielsen’s live plus-3 ratings, the first season of ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ outdid every premiere in history, including ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Better Call Saul’. These shows are, as a matter of fact, the three with the best premieres in history, quite an achievement for their home network, AMC, which had a spectacular 2015 thanks to its new titles. In its finale, ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ had 10, 1 million viewers in live plus-3 and a 5, 15 rating in adults 18-49. Said numbers were an improvement from last week’s numbers. The first season rating average in adults 18-49 was 7, 3 million. Taking the whole of TV into consideration, ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ was the second best premiere of 2015, only topped by Fox’s Empire.

ede Record continues to bet on the production of high quality fiction with successes like the biblical telenovela ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’ or the series ‘The Miracles of Jesus’ and ‘Joseph from Egypt’, among others. In the following interview with ttv, Anderson Souza Director of Rede Record TV Drama, speaks about this strategy.
The telenovela ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’ has broken audience records in Brazil, why do you think it was so successful? Viewers are missing stories that motivate and provide messages of hope and faith. Currently, most telenovelas are repetitive and bring nothing new. Also, there were great expectations over the plagues featured in ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’ and, no doubt, it was a factor in bringing in this new audience. With the seventh plague of Egypt, where a destructive storm happens, the telenovela registered 20 average points in Sao Paulo, with highs of 23 points and a 28% share; during its first 15 minutes, the production climbed to first place. ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’ belongs to a line of super-productions based on the Bible, which will now have a new release in the form of ‘Josué e a Terra Prometida’… At this moment, we’re in the stage of extensive research and the search of historical references for the characterization of the characters, the costumes and the scen-

Can you tell us something about the scriptwriter, the director and cast? The script is by Renato Modesto, who has already written several episodes for ‘The Miracles of Jesus’, and the direction falls, once again, on the hands of Alexandre Avancini (‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’, ‘Joseph from Egypt’ and ‘Proof of Love’, among others). We’re still in the process of casting talent, but we can confirm some actresses like Mirian Freeland, Paloma Bernadi, Nívea Stelmann y Thais Melchior. Rede Record is also preparing the second season of ‘Child Protective Service’ and ‘Obscure Power’, along with new productions like ‘The Slave Isaura’ and ‘Sem Volta’. How would you define this style of production? Rede Record is always open to new things, with options for different audiences. The mentioned telenovelas and series address diverse issues such as social issues, the protection of children and teenagers and Brazilian politics. We also went back in time and showed the history of slavery in Brazil and, with the show ‘Sem Volta’ we offer action, adventure and suspense. All of this not mentioning our productions based on biblical stories that are a success in Brazil and other countries.

And the company not only multiplied its offer exponentially, but did the same to the demand as well: ‘Little Giants’, for instance, already has reached almost ten countries between premieres and licenses, while ‘Stand Up for Your Country’ reached almost twice that number.
While telenovelas continue to be its main strength, the company has evolved into a notable player in the entertainment formats business, with ideas that continue to travel the globe.

Besieged by one of the church’s branch, which considered her to be haughty, disobedient and problematic, in the year 1930 she decided to go to Rome and approach the Pope seeking for recognition for her community, but she died without achieving it.

he beautiful Marina Bay in Singapore will host the new edition of Asia TV Forum, to be held at the Expo & Convention Centre of the Marina Bay Sands hotel, from December 1st to December 4th. After welcoming 4,800 attendees in 2014, ATF 2015 looks forward to building on its profile as the most important platform for the entertainment content eco-system in Asia, bringing together international content sellers and Asian buyers, and at the same time presenting a lineup of
conferences that takes an in-depth look to a content industry brimming with potential. More than 849 buyers and exhibitors showed up for the last edition. This year, the event is prepared to surpass those numbers during a four-day schedule, divided into a Pre-market Conference, to be held on December 1st, and the event itself, to start on December 2nd. TECHNOLOGY AS A LANGUAGE. As a continent, Asia’s work on digital development is

Those credentials make it easy to understand why ATF will open with a Pre-market conference centered around looking towards the future, with a keynote titled “Into The Future of Television: An Asian Empire’s Move Forward”, given by D.J. Lee, president of Media Content Business at CK E&M, the Korean company that leads the charge in content creation and marketing. Lee has worked in the television business for more than 20 years and is noted as an innovator and a pioneer, bringing tvN, Korea’s leading channel, to surpass program ratings and advertising revenues of FTA networks, with a successful combination of local content and international formats. The keynote will highlight a day that includes the conferences “Asia: The Big Picture - The Future of TV and Visual Entertainment”; “Driving The Shift: Native Players, Digital Strategies”, “View From Over-The-Top”, “Enriching The Digital Dimension - Digital Content: Cashing In or Cashing Out?” and the Q&A with Steve Macallister, CEO of All3Media International. The day will close with another interesting panel: “What Do Buyers Want?”, that will feature top executives from some of Asia’s leading buyers, like Maggie Xiong, Senior Director International Acquisition of China’s Youku Tuduo, and Seo Jang-ho, Head, Sales & Acquisitions, Korea’s CJ E&M. THINKING AS KIDS. The market will officially open on Wednesday, with a day that will feature kid’s content as its main topic of discussion. The masterclass “Engaging Kids Through Storytelling: The Five Elements of a Good Story”, with the writer/director Danny Stack as speaker, and the panels “Trends in Kids Consumption” and “The Ultimate Audience” will try to give insights into the TV habits of the youngest audiences.

ATF has its own focus on kid’s content under Junior@ATF. Rebranded from Animation Lab, Junior@ATF allows attendees to hear from top executives in the industry and provides a platform for leading commissioners, financiers and buyers to uncover talent and new kid’s content. The first day of the market will also have a networking reception and will host one of the two ATF’s panels dedicated to international co-productions: “Holding Hands: Making Asian and Western Collaborations Work”. The panel will present two successful Asian case studies, trying to offer valuable insights into combining top grade production resources. ORIGINAL OR NOT. Formats also will get an indepth look during ATF 2015, with the platform Formats@ATF and with a series of conferences held on the second day of the event, like “Kids-
Led Formats”, “Case Study: Localising ‘Googlebox’ in Asia”, and two format masterclasses: “Creating & Protecting Formats” and “When TV Formats Meet Digital: The Best Ideas”. The focus on formats will call for the presence of many international speakers, like Jan Salling, Co-Chairman, Format Recognition and Protection Association (FRAPA) and Dave Winnan, Executive Producer, International Formats, ITV Studios, among others. To complement this focus, Thursday will also include panels about original programming, like “The Trends of Content” and “On The Prowl For Asia’s Original”. FINDING THE MONEY. The obstacles and opportunities of working alongside their Western counterparts will be featured again on the last day of the event with the panel “Crossing Continents: Guide to Structuring a Succesful EastWest Co-Production”, featuring Kristina Trapp, CEO, European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, and Chan Gin Kai, President/Executive Producer, Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association. Financing and film production will be the main focus of the day, with the conferences “Europe: An Insight into European Film Finance” and “Southeast Asia: Overview of Southeast Asia Film Financing”, among others, like the megapanel “Meet the Financiers”. The event will close with the SAFF Project Market Prize Ceremony, which will select the top projects of the inaugural SAFF Project Market. ttv
