Neftlix’s ‘The Crown’ won for Best Drama Series (Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

Surprising Winners and Snubs at the Golden Globes FX was the night’s big winner in the TV categories, with awards for ‘The People vs. O.J. Simpson’ and ‘Atlanta’. It was also a good night for ‘The Night Manager’ (AMC) and ‘The Crown’ (Netflix).

O

n Sunday, January 8, the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards took place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills (Los Angeles), in a ceremony hosted by Jimmy Fallon. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) awarded the best in movies and television, in a live ceremony that aired on NBC in the US and TNT in Latin America. If there was one big winner in the TV categories, it was FX, which earned four of the top awards: ‘The People v. OJ: American Crime Story’ was named Best Miniseries and Sarah Paulson earned the Best Actress in a Miniseries award; while ‘Atlanta’ was named Best Comedy Series and Donald Glover won in the Best Actor in a Comedy Series category.

On the down side, HBO, which entered the night as the favorite with the most nominations (14 in total), including Best Drama (‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Westworld’), Best Comedy (‘Veep’) and Best Miniseries (‘The Night Of’), left empty-handed. AMC also had a smashing night, courtesy of ‘The Night Manager’, a co-production with the BBC, which earned three statues: Best Actor (Tom Hiddleston), Best Supporting Actor (Hugh Laurie) and Best Supporting Actress (Olivia Colman). On the digital side, Netflix’s period drama ‘The Crown’ was considered the Best Drama Series, winning against stiff competition from ‘Stranger Things’, ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Westworld’ and ‘This is Us’. In addition, Claire Foy won the Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her brilliant performance as Queen Elizabeth II.

Culture Meets Contemporary Discop Dubai will offer the industry a new opportunity to meet with qualified buyers from over 100 fast developing countries in the MENA region, the Indian Subcontinent, Oceania and SouthEast Asia, for a 3-day agenda of meetings, premiere screenings and highlevel networking opportunities. Fast-developing world regions have been the defining feature of Discop markets since 1991,” said by Patrick Jucaud-Zuchowicki, founder of the Discop markets, this statement has never rung truer than it does now, on the heels of the first edition of Discop Dubai. Located at the heart of one of the fastest-growing regions in the world, Discop Dubai will take place from January 29 through the 31, at the Madinat Jumeirah Resort, connecting key players driving multi-platform, multi-screen and television content business across the Middle East, North Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, Oceania and Southeast Asia. A LAND OF OPPORTUNITY. Launching in a region that has a vast population featuring two hundred nationalities; Discop Dubai stands not only as a world-class destination

for business meetings, but presents “a new opportunity to meet with qualified buyers from the 140 fast-developing countries under our watch,” said the CEO of Basic Lead. The organization expects the event to bring together 75+ global and major television content brands and 200+ qualified broadcasters, content distribution and other streaming services operating in countries that are within easy reach from Dubai; from South East Asia, the Indian Sub-Continent and MENA, as well as many other emerging countries seeking culturally diverse and high quality content. “We know service broadcasters, digital, cable, mobile and streaming services operating in the emerging countries that are currently open for business and generate over 20% of all foreign sales; a number that’s growing,” he said.

ALL ABOUT MATCHMAKING. As part of its strategy to “re-position its markets clearly as 100% pure-play matchmaking programs, focusing on the emerging marketplaces of Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Middle East, the Indian Sub-Continent, Oceania and South-East Asia,” the organization will offer a 3-day agenda driven essentially by a market powered by pre-organized meetings and high-level networking opportunities. Organized by FRAPA, the day will welcome all the major Turkish distributors as exhibitors. In addition, as sales of Ramadan content surge in the countries covered by Discop Dubai, where Muslims represent the majority population, the 3-day market and screenings program will also showcase scripted and educational programming - especially Arabic and Turkish series - specifically available for the month-long Ramadan celebrations. “This inaugural edition of Discop Dubai will serve as a ‘laboratory’ where we will test several initiatives that we will set up for the 2018 and second edition of Discop Dubai,” the executive said. “Setting up a special screening component specifically dedicated to Ramadan Content is part of our 2018 plan and we will already be screening a few original shows that will be made available for 2017 Ramadan programming.” Zuchowicki also revealed the organization will set up focus-group sessions with a cross section of MENA producers and broadcasters to determine what the best formula is to organize an upfront event centered on original Ramadan content. “Discop Dubai will also feature a non-intrusive sidebar program that will offer a few panel discussions with expert speakers, company and marketplace presentations and screenings,” the CEO said.

Due to the recent tragedies in Istanbul and surrounding areas, the organization’s plans to be in a position in 2017 to offer these 4 Discop destination-based matchmaking programs “were shattered,” he revealed. “We hoped things would get better in 2017 so that we could move the dates of Discop Istanbul 2017 to end of August, early September, but these plans seem highly compromised,” he said, announcing an official statement regarding the future of Discop Istanbul will be issued at Discop Dubai. ttv

25 Years Setting Trends By Carolina Mussio / @carolinamussio / cmussio@todotv.tv

What do you do if you’ve found guaranteed success in the international distribution business with your dramas? If you’re ITV Inter Medya, you celebrate your 25th anniversary by investing in other genres and building a catalog of feature films, as you seek to conquer the entire spectrum of content.

16/TTV MAGAZINE

Guess Who? Format

“We are planning to present our formats to some of the region’s most important production companies and TV channels at Discop.”

O

wner of some of the international TV industry’s most popular dramas and one of the main promoters of Turkish dramas’ global success, ITV Inter Medya is never one to play it safe. Last year, the Turkish distributor increased its investments in feature films

and started developing, producing and selling reality and game show formats. Ahead of Discop Dubai, Can Okan, CEO of ITV Inter Medya, spoke to ttv about the continuous success of its Turkish drama series and the results obtained with the original formats presented last year, and shared details about its initiatives and projects for

2017, year in which ITV celebrates its first 25 years in business. What’s the importance of being present at a market like Discop Dubai? As you know, Turkish dramas are extremely popular and followed by millions of people throughout the MENA region. Until recently, about 40% or 45% of the total revenue in the sales of series was coming from this region. With an increase in the number of countries that Turkish TV series were sold to and the exponential growth of the Latin American market, this percentage may have dropped a little although prices are still on similar levels. As Dubai is a major hub and since our company is operating in many countries in the region, Discop Dubai is a very important market for us. What are your goals for the event? We will be launching the free TV sales of one of our most popular dramas entitled ‘Endless Love’. The title’s first season will be broadcast on a major pay TV platform in the coming weeks. In addition, we are going to continue the sales of some of our series that have been previously broadcast in the region such as ‘Black Rose’ and ‘In Between’, as well as the sales of our newest title ‘Hayat’. As you know, in the past year, ITV Inter Medya has also started developing and producing formats. During the market, we are planning to present our formats to some of the region’s most important production companies as well as TV channels. Can you share any details about this formats initiative? To be honest, we are quite picky when it comes to formats. For us, it is very important that all of our formats are innovative and original. We currently count nine formats in our catalogue. Among these, ‘The Box Challenge’, ‘Guess Who?’, and ‘Oasis’ are probably the most attractive. ‘Oasis’ is an action reality game show for which we are currently looking into Dubai and Abu Dhabi as potential cities to build a hub. This format features three main campgrounds; the desert, the sea and the oasis. We hope to soon find some beautiful and practical spaces in the region.

CEO of ITV Inter Medya

“’Join Instant’ is definitely one of our most important formats.”

AND FEATURE FILMS TOO As if adding production and distribution of formats to their successful drama business wasn’t enough, ITV Inter Medya made another major addition to its slate last year, making greater investments in its film distribution business. “As the company will celebrate its 25th anniversary, 2017 is an important year for ITV,” said Can Okan, CEO of ITV Inter Medya. “Recently, we have been concentrating on the distribution of feature films to a greater extent, which was ITV Inter Medya’s core business at its foundation.” The Turkish company has managed to build an extensive catalogue of movies that are not only box office hits in Turkey, but that feature many known actors, of whom some play parts in its most successful series. “This catalogue is growing day by day,” he said. “In addition to that, we will continue to globally distribute Turkish drama series produced by some of the most important producers in Turkey as well as dramedy series, a new Turkish genre becoming more and more popular in the international market.”

Among these formats are ‘Timebox’, which features an interesting concept with some heavy drama, and ‘Lubdub’, a talent show in which the winner is determined through the use of a new technology. We believe that our partnership with Secuoya Group, whose many formats have been

“We believe that high quality Turkish dramas will continue their popularity in the MENA region.” successfully produced in Spain and Latin America in the past, will broaden our company’s success and increase new deals. We know that you have been working on a big project called ‘Join Instant’. Can you tell us more about this? ‘Join Instant’ is definitely one of our most important formats. It includes a second screen technology that we developed in partnership with BasBros Media. Using this technology, viewers at home can join the show by using their cell phones, tablets and/or computers. While this program has been broadcast in a small TV channel in Turkey for three seasons, we are currently finalizing a deal with an Indian TV channel reaching over 180 million homes and hope to soon go on air in India. Think of a show in which millions of people are competing against each other on TV and at home! What do you think about the TV industry’s growth in the region? What opportunities does this bring for the company? We believe that high quality Turkish dramas will continue their popularity in the region and that the North African market will especially grow in favor of Turkish products. In addition, we think that this region will prove to be extremely fruitful for our format business. What are your current projects in the region? Any deals or initiatives you could highlight? ‘Endless Love’, which has become a ratings hit in all the countries it has been broadcast so far, will also become a phenomenon among viewers in the MENA region. Besides that, we are working on the sales of the final seasons of ‘In Between’ and ‘Black Rose’ as well as of ‘Hayat’, a brand new dramedy that we think will be soon considered the new Turkish genre. ttv

TTV MAGAZINE/17

At last year’s Mipcom, ITV Inter Medya signed an agreement with Secuoya Group. Can you tell us more about the deal? We have indeed signed a distribution agreement for nine formats with Secuoya Group, one of the leading media companies in Spain. We will be presenting these formats, of which many have already been produced and broadcast successfully in Spain and in some countries in Latin America, to our clients.

Their Faith Was Rewarded By Luis Cabrera / @luis_cabreram / lcabrera@todotv.tv

18/TTV MAGAZINE

A spectacular 2016 is Record TV’s latest accomplishment after deciding to take a leap of faith and invest in an unprecedented genre: biblical telenovelas. The Brazilian giant’s belief in that idea from 2010 has led its productions to conquer screens all across Latin America and expand its success to the rest of the world.

L

Delmar Andrade,

International Sales Director of Record TV

“From the start, the goal was to develop a product that could offer values to audiences’ daily lives, prompting families to sit together in front of their TV and find the benefit, without sacrificing any entertainment,”

ooking back at the road traveled, Delmar Andrade, International Sales Director of Record TV, makes it seem simple: “Record TV identified an opportunity in the market and that made it invest in developing productions with these epic and biblical themes.” A closer look at the evolution, shows the adventure started by the Brazilian company was as bold and ambitious as it was successful. Betting on epic productions based on biblical themes started with a series of miniseries which, in light of viewers’ and critics’ positive response, both locally and internationally, grew to become biblical telenovelas, a never-before-seen genre at the time. In March of 2010, Record premiered the miniseries ‘Esther, The Queen’, based on the Book of Esther. It was the company’s first step in the new direction. Soon enough, they realized they had a major success, and increased its efforts and investments to develop more content in the new genre. The first big hit was ‘King David’. Acclaimed in Brazil for its high quality, the 30-episode miniseries resulted in a major local success and made waves internationally, opening the door to the US through MundoFox. “For us it was more than surprising to see the audience’s response. It was a great joy, because ‘King David’ was created with great care and attention to detail,” Andrade said at the time. “With this impact, the search for our products increased greatly.” ‘King David’ was followed by two new miniseries, each with greater investment by Record TV, until the premiere of ‘The Ten Commandments’ in January 2015, the biblical telenovela that has made it to the top of the ratings’ chart in every screen in premiered on. PROPHET ACROSS ALL LANDS. ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’, the telenovela’s international title, made Record TV’s bet on biblical content pay off, catapulting the network to the top of the ratings’ chart in Brazil for many days. For instance, the production was the leading show in Rio de Janeiro for 21 days, with ratings that spiked to 32 points.

The situation repeated itself once again in Chile, where Mega had taken over the audience with its Turkish productions, until TVN premiered ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’, winning the top spot on more than one occasion. The epic telenovela ended a few weeks ago, after 242 episodes, averaging a 13.0 rating that spiked to 20. The epic production was also embraced in Mexico, where Imagen TV has just acquired it; Paraguay, where it airs on Telefuturo; Uruguay, airing on Canal 10; and in the US Hispanic market, with Univision seeing its audience increase by 64% in the timeslot following the telenovela’s premiere. In Portugal, ‘Moses’ joined its successor, ‘The Promised Land’, to become the highest-rated telenovelas of 2016. The telenovela also scored excellent ratings in Japan, Peru, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mozambique and Cape Verde, among others. The first season of ‘Moses’ has 176 episodes and the second has 66. In addition, Record re-edited the production in movie format, breaking box office records in Brazil, with over 11 million viewers. The success of ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’ is still ongoing around the world, but Record TV hasn’t taken too long to produce, premiere and distribute its successor, ‘The Promised Land’, which made its debut weeks ago on TVN in Chile, will premiere in Argentina on Telefe and was one of the standouts at Natpe Miami 2017. “’The Promised Land’ is a greater challenge than ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’,” said Anderson Souza, Director of Drama at Record TV. “It’s a story that’s not as well known by the general public, but that also has great elements like war, battles and major events.” HEARTFELT STORIES. Record TV has pulled out all the stops to invest and innovate in its biblical productions, learning new lessons

TTV MAGAZINE/19

The Promised Land Telenovela

The production, which follows the popular story of Moses during his encounter with God at the Sinai desert and his calling to lead his people to freedom, had an even more impressive role outside Brazil. “’Moses and the Ten Commandments’ opened important doors in the international market, from Argentina to Poland,” Andrade said. “To give you an idea: in Poland, two networks aired it, a broadcast TV and a pay TV channel, at the same time, both with excellent ratings.”

‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’ also made a splash in Argentina, where it succeeded from the very first day. With a 20.0 rating and 45% market share, it gave Telefe back its leading position in Argentina’s ratings race, a spot it had lost to the Turkish and Korean telenovelas offered by its competitors. ‘Moses’ was so important for Telefe that it decided to host a special event at the Luna Park stadium, to air the highly-anticipated parting-of-the-Red-Sea episode. On TV, the episode doubled its closes competitor’s rating, while over 6000 fans gathered at the Luna Park to watch in on a giant screen with the cast, as another 4000 waited outside the venue.

with each new title, raising the bar more and more. From the criticized “fake beards” used in ‘Esther’, to gigantic sets and cities recreated specifically for each series, and even locations like the one in Angola to film ‘The Promised Land’, where each episode had a budget of US$ 200,000.

STORIES THAT PAVED THE WAY

But the production quality explains biblical telenovelas’ success only in part, the rest is product of the values that the stories portray. “From the start, the goal was to develop a product that could offer values to audiences’ daily lives, prompting families to sit together in front of their TV and find the benefit, without sacrificing any entertainment,” said Delmar Andrade.

Esther the Queen

Samson and Delilah

(2010) – This ten episode miniseries based on The Book of Esther, was premiered in March of 2010. Written by Gabriela Durlo, each episode had a budget of US$ 150,000. The series registered excellent results, with a finale that reached a 19.0 rating in Rio de Janeiro. MundoFox aired it in the US in 2013.

(2011) – Record TV upped the number of episodes in this miniseries to 18, investing close to US$ 3.7 million. ‘Samson and Delilah’ travelled to many countries, including the US. According to Ibope, the production averaged a 12.0 rating in San Pablo and 16.0 in Rio.

King David

The Miracles of Jesus

Record TV will continue traveling down the biblical telenovela path with ‘El rico y el lázaro’, the next major production within this unique genre, which has rewarded the company’s faith and originality with unprecedented success. ttv

(2012) – The miniseries confirmed Record was on the right path. Critically acclaimed, the series led the market share during 20 of its 30 episodes, dominating the conversation in Brazil during the first quarter of 2012. Its debut in the US in 2013 opened the door for the previous miniseries and its success catapulted it to the UK and Ireland.

(2014-2015) – With 35 episodes divided into two seasons, the series stood out from the bunch by telling different stories in standalone episodes. Its production quality was praised locally and internationally, winning an award in Argentina from the FyMTI.

The Promised Land

(2013) – Record TV’s longest biblical miniseries with 38 episodes. Its budget was US$ 8.7 million. Aired again in Brazil in 2014 and 2016. ‘Joseph’ had spectacular sets. Its premiere reached a 15.0 rating average in the country.

(2015-2016) – The world’s first biblical telenovela. Along 242 episodes and two seasons, with a budget of US$ 250,000 per episode, the telenovela was filmed in Brazil Chile, Egypt and Israel. It established audience record for Record TV and became an international success, scoring excellent ratings in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Portugal, Poland and the US, among others.

(2016-2017) – Record’s most recent biblical telenovela, ‘The Promised Land’ follows the story of Joshua, who leads the Hebrew people to conquer Canaan. The telenovela has 150 episodes in HD, shot in locations in Angola and Israel with a budget of US$ 200,000 per episode. Since its premiere, it’s averaged a 15.2 rating in San Pablo and 16.5 in Rio.

“Biblical and epic series, not religious, that we produce, are suited for the entire market. Now we have an audience across the globe that’s looking for a thread of hope. When you provide a strong and striking message, it touches the audience’s heart, because we are all sensitive. They’re stories that make you think.”

20/TTV MAGAZINE

“The audience has embraced these telenovelas,” Souza said. “People are in need of a word of faith, quality programming that they can watch with their kids and offers a message of hope. This doesn’t happen only here in Brazil, but also overseas,” he said.

016 was a rough year for the global economy. However, Turkish dramas, the biggest international TV phenomenon of recent times, saw sales continue travelling down a comfortable path of success. Kanal D, one of the most important companies behind the trend, is ready to break new records in 2017, armed with one of the most appealing titles in the genre. “Despite all the global crisis, Kanal D was able to continue its growth in 2016,” said Kerim Emrah Turna, Sales Executive at Kanal D. “This year we’ll be expecting a growing interest in Turkish content. We are working on different projects to reach a larger audience on different platforms.”

Turna’s optimism is backed by the fact that Kanal D owns one of the most anticipated titles of the last Mipcom: ‘Wounded Love’. The novel sees the return of de Bergüzar Korel and Halit Ergenç to the small screen, possibly the two most popular Turkish actors in the international market. The duo is known for their roles as Sherazada and Onur in ‘1001 Nights’, the most successful -and possibly most influential- drama, product of the first wave of Turkish dramas to travel overseas. At Mipcom 2016, Kanal D hosted a screening of ‘Wounded Love’ with the presence of its leading actors. “They drew all the attention. Our cinetruck was a first in Mipcom history, a 20-minute screening of ‘Wounded Love’ was held in the truck,” said Turna, adding the premiere in Turkey has resulted in notable ratings: “ During the first month on air, ‘Wounded Love’ took the first place 4 times on the rating charts.” “2017 will be even more glorious, you 2091 can be Serie sure of that,” he said confidently.

Along with ‘Wounded Love’, Kanal D is arriving in Dubai with a mix of new and classic titles, including ‘Family Secrets’, ‘Crossroads’, ‘Flames of Desire’, ‘Sweet Revenge’, ‘War of the Roses’, ‘Matter of Respect’, ‘For My Son’, ‘Sunshine Girls’ and ‘Fatmagül’. “There are also new ongoing Kanal D drama projects,” he said. “We have already started producing original series for our OTT platform, BluTV. Its projects are high quality productions for a more niche and sophisticated audience. The genres differ from crime and investigation, to reality.” With high-quality productions as its motto, Kanal D is setting new goals for 2017. “In 2016 we have reached more than 140 countries with our content,” he said. “Actually, there are no regions left that we would like to access. However, we have a special interest to grow our business in Sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia. A recent example of this is a volume deal with one of the major pay TV platforms in Africa, Zap TV.” ttv

ADAPTING TO CHANGES INSIDE A CORE MARKET How was the company’s business in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region during 2016? What are your latest deals? MENA is always one of the core markets for us and I believe it will always be. In 2016, even if the crisis appeared in the region, we have kept our presence by adapting ourselves to the market conditions. How long have you been working on the region? What deals will you highlight during that period? We have been in the region for the last 10 years. We carry one of the largest libraries, and most of our titles are being sold and getting amazing results. What are the characteristics of the TV industry in MENA countries compared with other regions? In MENA there are a couple of big players and they mastermind and lead the whole region. However, we can manage to be in the small markets as well in the region. What content is the most demanded in the region? Any particular trends? I believe ‘Wounded Love’ will be a spectacular title in the region. With its production quality, cast, acting, images, I believe it will impress and fascinate the MENA audience. What new opportunities do you expect from this new event? What are your goals for Discop Dubai? I believe having one of the most influential markets in Dubai will be much effective. It will unite both Balkan and MENA territories in one space and I believe it will be fruitful.

T

elemundo Internacional is present at Discop Dubai 2017 with a catalogue that combines high quality series and telenovelas that aim to reach a growing regional market in which, while viewers’ attention shifts to multiple screens, television still remains the most used media by consumers. Spearheading the list of title is the telenovela ‘Lady Altagracia’ (‘La Doña’), which tells a story of revenge, betrayal and ambition, but also of redemption, justice and love through a woman named Altagracia, who lost her parents to a fatal car accident and suffered the abuse of a group of young men at a young age. Years later she becomes a ruthless and ambitious woman, an unfeeling mother who abandoned her daughter and was able to amass a considerable empire; but there is one thing missing from her life: love. And she finds it in Saul, an attorney who has also captivated Monica, Altagracia’s estranged daughter.

The show, a Telemundo production filmed by Argos Television, stars Aracely Arámbula, David Chocarro, Rebecca Jones, and Danna Paola. Other highlights in the distributor’s catalog include ‘Silvana Sin Lana’, which is centered on Silvana Rivapalacios de Villaseñor, a mother to three young girls and wife to one of the most influential businessmen in the city. Silvana’s life changes dramatically when her husband goes bankrupt and disappears without a trace, leaving his family homeless. Now, for the first time ever, Silvana and her family must learn what it really means to work to survive. The company is also presenting ‘Vuelve Temprano’, a story about a family who is faced with the sudden loss of their child, an event that reveals that their seemingly perfect lives are not all they are

cracked up to be; and ‘¿Quién es quién?’, which tells the story of a pair of unaware twins with completely opposite lives who, by a play of fate, swap lives and learn some important lessons along the way. As for series, the company is coming to the market with ‘La Querida del Centauro’, a drama about a woman named Yolanda who is incarcerated in a maximum-security prison where she meets El Centauri, one of the most important drug lords in the country. After she learns he lied to her, she decides to do everything she can to make him pay for his betrayal, including making a deal with an honorable detective. The show, which is made up of 51 onehour episodes, is produced by Sony Pictures Television for Telemundo and stars Ludwika Paleta, Humberto Zurita and Michel Brown. Last but not least, Telemundo is presenting ‘O Hipnotizador’, an HBO Latin America original production about a hypnotist who can put people into a trance and make them reveal their innermost secrets. He is a man of mystery, lonely and isolated, who suffers from perpetual insomnia, behind which lies a great secret. With HBO’s quality imprint and high production values, the eight episode show stars Leonardo Sbaraglia, Chico Díaz, Juliana Didone, César Troncoso, Bianca Comparato, Chino Darín and Marilú Marini. ttv

Facebook Thrives on Video Growth TTV MAGAZINE/25

Facebook presented its financial results for Q2, 2016, surpassing analysts and investors’ expectations. With US$ 6.436 billion in Q2 revenues, Facebook grew 59% from the same period last year. Mobile represented 84% of its ad revenue. In addition, the social platform generated US$ 2.06 billion in net income in Q2, up 186% from the period last year (US$ 719 million). Facebook also added almost 222 million monthly users, growing 15%. By the end of June, 1.710 billion people use Facebook every month, and 1.1 billion use it every day. The number of mobile users rose 20% to 1.57 billion. And the average revenue per user was up 38.4% to US$ 3.82, topping expectations for US $3.58. “We see a world that is video first, with video at the heart of all of our apps and services,” said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook. According to Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg, users are creating and sharing nearly three times more video on the platform than they did last year. Thus, video is the reason why people are spending more time on Facebook, which logically draws in more advertisers who are willing to pay more in order to stay in the game.

The smashing premiere of Ay Yapim’s new drama, ‘Heart of the City’, in Turkey in early January marked the third ratings’ sensation for Eccho Rights this season, following the success of ‘Insider’ and ‘Brave and Beautiful’, poising the Turkish distributor for an excellent 2017.

‘Insider’ follows Sarp, who blames himself for the childhood disappearance of his little brother, and is still haunted by the loss. To atone for his mistakes, he joins the police academy. Just as he is set to graduate he is assigned to infiltrate the mafia syndicate run by Celal. Tasked with uncovering the mob’s mole working within the police force, Sarp unwittingly finds himself once again searching for his long lost brother. ‘Brave and Beautiful’ is the story of Tahsin, the head of the Korludag family, a powerful man feared and respected by everyone in town. He loves his beautiful daughter Sühan dearly but her sister-in-law sees her as a threat to inheriting Tahsin’s fortune. She plots to kill Sühan, but at the last minute a mysterious and handsome stranger appears to save her life, and steal her heart. The three Ay Yapim dramas are all part of Eccho Rights’ catalog for Discop Dubai, along with two other hit dramas: ‘Bitter Sweet Life’, produced by Surec Film, and the internationally successful ‘Elif’ from Green Yapim, which premiered in mid-2016 in Colombia to excellent ratings.

ANOTHER WIN FOR AY YAPIM To add to the success of its dramas in Turkey, Eccho Rights has landed another Ay Yapim series in a new territory. This month, ‘Flight HS13’, based on the original format ‘The End’ by Ay Yapim and developed by Dutch producer Column Film, made its way to the UK. Acquired by Walter Presents, an acclaimed foreign language drama service, the series will premiere on Channel 4’s online digital channel later this year. Globo, First FTA Network to Offer 4K HDR Globo is in tune with forefront technology and announces the launch of its first product in High Dynamic Range (HDR) version, providing images with greater definition of colors and contrast. While Netflix (‘Marco Polo’), Amazon (‘Mozart in the Jungle’) and Vudu offered content in this format before, the launch marks the first time a free-to-air TV station does so. The classic ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, a hit on free-to-air television, was made available on July 18 in 4K HDR via GloboPlay. The launch set the beginning of content distribution in 4K HDR amongst free-to-air television stations worldwide. In addition to the miniseries, Globo will offer a compact of the Olympic Games opening ceremony in 4K HDR and other programs in the coming months via Globo Play. In addition to the miniseries, Globo offered the Olympics opening ceremony in 4H HDR, and will announced “other shows in the next few months.”

Nielsen Launches its Digital Content Ratings Nielsen launched its new metric, Digital Content Ratings, a tool that measures audiences across desktop and mobile devices for all content, including video, audio and text. This way, media agencies and advertisers can compare online audiences using similar metrics to television. The launch is part of the company’s Total Audience Measurement tool, designed to measure media consumption across all platforms in a consistent way. The syndicated clients involved with digital content ratings include A+E, ABC, BuzzFeed, Discovery, Mashable, Vice, Freeform, AOL, Gawker, Kik, PopSugar and TasteMade. “This is the next step in the transformation of measurement as we know it,” said Megan Clarken, Nielsen’s president of product leadership. The new ratings are similar to Nielsen’s Digital Ad Ratings, which are not a syndicated product because it’s specific for campaigns and have exclusive information about the brands. According to Nielsen, the Digital Content Ratings will help digital and television publishers monetize video launches, live coverage and other moments, while agencies and advertisers can incorporate that data into their media plans.
