The proposal represents a US$ 35-per-share offer and, according to Comcast, it’s worth 19% more than the Disney offer, which reached US$ 52.4 billion and was comprised of Disney stock. “We have long admired what the Murdoch family has built at Twenty-First Century Fox,” Comcast CEO Brian Roberts wrote in a letter to the Murdochs, adding that he’s “convinced that the businesses to be sold are
highly complementary to ours, and that our company would be the right strategic home for them.” In addition, Comcast is prepared to pay the US$ 1.5 billion break-up fee Fox will have to pay Disney if the transaction is not completed; and has agreed to divest the same assets as Disney has agreed to in order to avoid regulatory challenges. The company had offered to buy 21st Century Fox, which also include Fox’s international holdings and its stake in Hulu, but Fox, led by Rupert Murdoch, preferred Disney’s offer instead. If Comcast succeeds this time, the move would merge the assets mentioned with NBC and the Universal movie. Disney, however, has a chance to match or even top Comcast’s offer while it waits for the July 10 investor meeting set by Fox.

APPLE UNVEILS NEW SVOD STRATEGYV IN ADDITION to continuing its original series production strategy -for which it will invest a billion dollars this year-, Apple’s TV ambitions now have a new side to them. According to Bloomberg, the tech giant is planning to sell SVOD subscriptions to services like Netflix, HBO or Hulu directly through its TV app, available on Apple TV, iPhones and iPads. This way, the process would be simplified considerably for users, who will no longer have to follow Apple’s app to go to each streaming service and subscribe, but rather do it from one place. While no more details about this new Apple initiative have been announced yet, according to the US platform, the change will happen in 2019. It’s worth remembering that Apple’s TV app is currently only available in the US, Canada and the UK.

“What’s happening this year is we’ve expanded for Natpe to be truly international. So it’s not only focused on the CEE, which is still the main focus of the show, but now it’s really becoming an international event,” said JP Bommel, president and CEO of Natpe. The event is set to welcome over 400 buyers, as well as 130 exhibiting companies from 30 countries and 280 buying companies from 55 countries, being its most diverse group of attendees to date. “Participants coming from Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa, which is a very strong, emerging market, will have an op-
portunity to come to Budapest, to experience new content from US studios through our screenings, as well as other regions. We are a global show,” he said. “CEE is burgeoning with innovation and vibrancy, but as the world becomes a smaller place, we need to capitalize on the wider, growing talent pool present in the EMEA region,” he added. CONFERENCES AND SESSIONS: Reflective of the change, its annual Pitch & Play Live! event, co-hosted with CEETV, the leading media platform for regional TV intelligence, will extend its entry criteria to include innovative independent producers from the wider EMEA region. Now in its third year, the event will take place on Wednesday at 4:00pm, hosted by JP Bommel, and will once again showcase
and recognize original format ideas with international potential. From all entries, up to ten titles will be selected and reviewed by an international committee of global content industry professionals, who will select three finalists, which will be presented at a dedicated session by their creators in front of a jury of highly respected TV professionals during Natpe Budapest International. “Last year’s Pitch & Play Live! event was a huge success, with the added bonus of a significantly reduced registration fee we look forward to seeing some even more creative, culturally and geographically diverse format ideas in 2018,” Bommel said. This year, the Brazilian network is preparing the premiere of two new biblical titles: the miniseries ‘Lia’ and the telenovela ‘Jesus’, for June and July, respectively. ‘Lia’, directed by Argentina’s Juan Pablo Pires, features Bruna Pazinato, Felipe Cardoso, Graziella Schmitt, Augusto García, Brenno Leone, Cacá Ottoni, Julia Magessi, Leandro Lima, Suzana Alves, Thais Muller and Becker de Oliveira. “Lia is -according to the Bible- the mother of six of the twelve tribes in Israel,” Andrade explained. “The plot revolves around her marriage to Jacob, as well as her sister-in-law, Raquel,” he said. ince Upronts week took place in the US, the new series presented by the major broadcast networks for the upcoming 2018/19 TV season already have tongues wagging, in real life and on the digital world. The social media response has been analyzed by ListenFirst Media among several categories. And while that social media buzz is not necessarily a guarantee for success, they are the first indication of the series’ potential future performance. According to the consultancy firm, whose data was published by Variety, the new NBC medical
drama ‘New Amsterdam’ and the ‘Charmed’ reboot by The CW are among the most popular series as of now. The new series ranked in the top three among all shows presented during the Upfronts across
organic conversation, social engagement, video views, and positive sentiment. According to the company’s coCEO, Jason Klein, ‘New Amsterdam’ has a social profile similar to the one registered by the successful NBC series ‘This Is Us’ in the 2017/17 Upfront season. The new version of ‘Charmed’ has led ListenFirst Media’s “interest ranking”, which adds the volume of conversation (mentions and tags) on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, searches and Wikipedia visits.
The second series in the ranking was ‘Manifest’, the new NBC thriller, while ‘New Amsterdam’ ranked third. ‘Manifest’s popularity during Upfronts week led it to rank among the Top 5 series in key measurements: organic conversation, social engagement and video views. In fact, the trailer for ‘Manifest’ shared on Facebook was seen over 16 million times and shared more than 80,000 times in the last week. ‘A Million Little Things’, ABC’s new series, ranked among the 10 leading shows in the categories of organic interest, social engagement and video views, according to ListenFirst. Other series that also stood out among social media users were ‘Legacies’ by The CW, spin-off of ‘The Originals’; and the ‘Murphy Brown’ reboot on CBS. ttv Charmed Series (1998)

LATIN AMERICA
THE BIOPIC FEVER For a few years now, biopics -fiction series based on popular characters from Latin America- became a notably popular genre in the region, with a spectacular growth in terms of new productions and premieres. In the following report, ttv offers an overview of the most recent premieres and the new projects set to come in the near future.

T
he increasing popularity of series based on controversial or beloved characters from entertainment, culture and politics in Latin America, has become and remained a solid trend for a few years now. Even if that “biopic bubble” might eventually burst, the genre currently continues to add more and more characters and titles, which confirms it still has a lot more to offer and room to grow in Latin America. During the Fresh TV Fiction hosted as part of Miptv 2018, the biopic genre was highlighted as an international trend, with Latin America presented as one of the markets where these stories have been developed the most.
“22% of new biopics come from Latin America, a region that’s generated 7% of the new fiction series,” said Virginia Mouseler, CEO of The Wit, during the conference in Cannes, France. Latin America kicked off 2018 with the highly-anticipated series ‘Sandro de América’ (Telefe/Viacom/Telefilms), based on the life of the Argentine idol, already aired with great success on Telefe in Argentina, on air now on Canal 13 in Chile, and soon to premiere in Colombia (Caracol Televisión), Peru (América Televisión), Uruguay (Seata Canal 10), Bolivia and Ecuador. In addition to the Sandro biopic, The Magic Eye is now developing up to five fiction projects -one of which is a biopic- “that are very strong in terms of budget and brand,” Juan Parodi, president of The Magic Eye, said to ttv. “But we want to announce them when we have them more advanced in terms of story. We already have the rights and we started working on development, but since this is such a changing industry, we don’t know which one we will start producing first,” he added. Later, April 22 marked the premiere of ‘Luis Miguel, la serie’; a co-production by MGM and Gato Grande, premiered for the Telemundo network for the US and Puerto Rico; and through Netflix for all of Latin America and Spain.
María Magdalena Series
Meanwhile, on May 7, the Mega network in Chile premiered its original biopic ‘Martín,
“The series falls under the premium fiction production strategy that Mega’s developing to bolster its cultural programming,” said Jaime Sepúlveda, director of Non-Fiction and Culture at Mega. In addition, on the same day the RCN Televisión network in Colombia also premiered the biopic ‘Nadie me quita lo bailao’ on primetime, based on the life of Colombian dancer Alberto Pérez, creator of Zumba. A production by FOXTelecolombia for RCN Televisión, starring Colombian actor Julián Román, popular all over Latin America because of his performance as Juan Gabriel in the biopic ‘Hasta que te conocí’ by Disney Media Distribution Latin America. Caracol Televisión also presented -as part of the 2018 LA Screenings- the super production ‘Bolivar, una lucha admirable’, a story based on the life of the Latin American icon Simón Bolivar. All this, in addition to the announcement of ‘La Guzmán’, a new biopic co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Imagen Televisión in Mexico, inspired by the life of Mexican super star Alejandra Guzmán, which is already in production in Mexico City and will premiere on the Mexican network. “We are very pleased to be co-producing another project with Sony and this time, telling a story as fascinating as ‘La Guzmán’,” said Aurelio Valcárcel, director of Fiction Production at Imagen Televisión. “This unparalleled artist connects several generations with her musical energy, which is precisely the engine of life for this wonderful character,” he added. In addition, Ecuadorian network Ecuavisa is preparing the premiere of the biopic ‘Sharon’, an original production based on the life of the singer, actress and businesswoman Edith Bermeo Cisneros (1974-2015), better known as “Sharon, La Hechicera”. Karina Medina, Programming Manager for Ecuavisa, said the biopic genre marks one of the leading TV trends in recent times in Latin America and that Ecuavisa has been no exception. “Biopics have been greatly accepted by audiences. THR3 Media Group -presented at Natpe Miami 2018 by Bruce Boren (former Televisa), Tomás Darcyl and Ricardo Costianovsky from Telefilms, are producing their first series titled ‘Santo, el enmascarado de plata’, based on the life of the popular Mexican wrestling character, El Santo. “We are very proud to be working with Bruce and thankful that the son of El Santo has trusted us. Another highlight is the biopic ‘Maradona, sueño bendito’ about the Argentine football legend Diego Armando Maradona, announced by BTF Media for Amazon Prime Video, in association with Dhana Media and Raze. DMDLA acquired the worldwide rights, which will take effect after a 12-month window of exclusivity for Amazon. “We will distribute ‘Maradona, sueño bendito’, the story of the greatest football player of the past decades. We believe it will be a great success,” Leonardo Aranguibel confirmed to ttv. Lastly, during the presentation of the Televisa telenovela ‘La jefa del campeón’, producer Roberto Gómez Fernández -son of Mexican actor and producer Roberto Gómez Bolaños, better known as Chespirito-, confirmed to ttv that he’s currently working on a biopic about his father. Mega Makes its Debut in Budapest Esperanza Garay, CEO of Mega Globla Entertainment spoke to ttv about the strategy behind the new international distributor, which was launched at the recent LA Screenings Independents and is now making its way to Natpe Budapest International 2018. By Sebastián Amoroso / @sebamoroso / samoroso@todotv.tv
egy with a new lineup, the network quickly began growing and improving its ratings. The next step, when the ratings were consolidated, was to delve into original production, a strong move and a delicate bet that’s certainly paid off. Since we started, they’ve been a very successful product and Mega is now the leading network in Chile. These first productions were initially distributed by Telemundo Internacional and when the contract ended in December, the network decided to go one step further and launch its first distributor, and I was invited to participate.

nnounced in early May, a few days before the LA Screenings, Mega Global Entertainment made its debut in Los Angeles last week, market where it was officially launched.
How was Mega Global Entertainment created? Four years ago, Mega started a challenge in Chile under the administration of Patricio Hernández and with the arrival of Bethia Group, which acquired the network, fourth in ratings at the time. Thanks to a major transformation and betting on an international programming strat-
When I was at Telemundo, the content’s success wasn’t a surprise for us. It’s a product that sells amazingly in the international market, especially in terms of formats. Telemundo has adapted several titles and there will be two on air in Mexico: ‘Ambar’, the adaptation of ‘Tenías que ser tú’, and another one which will be adapted by Imagen TV and that we’ll announce soon. We are moving slower with finished content, but I’m sure Mega’s content is ready to explode internationally. Which titles would you highlight from its offer? We took four titles to Los Angeles, three of which are on air on Mega. The first is ‘Hidden Truths’, a thriller that airs in the afternoons, full of drama, about a mother who has to sell her daughter and reunites with her years later. We also have ‘If I Were Rich’, which airs at 8:00pm and it’s a drama with hints of comedy, about three people who win the lottery. Lastly we have ‘Perdona nuestros pecados’, which is an amazing success. It has 213 hours of an amazing story and impeccable production. It’s been one of the products that’s sold the best in the market. And we also have ‘Amanda’, which reached over 40% share during its broadcast and has already been sold to Uruguay and Paraguay. This series is available dubbed for many territories. Do you also offer entertainment formats? We started with ‘¿Volverías con tu ex?’, a very successful format in Chile that will now return with a second season. It has great international potential and we’ve even been asked for the finished version. We want to grow in the format arena. What about third-party content? When we created the distributor with Mega, in addition to Mega’s content, we decided to have titles from other providers, and we started with Zona A in Colombia, which is a hotbed for content. We have several series designed to be 13 episodes, such as ‘Jarico’, which is very current and deals with cybercrime; and ‘Espiga de acero’, which is the story of Granma, the boat that took Fidel Castro to Cuba, told from the point of view of its protagonists, like César Gómez, who is turning 100 years old this year and was on the boat. ttv

What international potential does Mega’s content have? Chile is a very competitive country in terms of broadcast TV, with many years of experience and an enormous quality. Chilean writers are recognized internationally and they’re stories travel the world. In Chile, comedy and thriller are very successful.

ttv / Q&A
A Romantic Crime Comedy Claudia Souto, writer of the Brazilian telenovela ‘The Big Catch’, which Globo is presenting at Natpe Budapest 2018, spoke to ttv about the process of creating the story which captivated local audiences, reaching over 38.6 million viewers. By Valentina Ulibarri / @vale_ulibarri / vulibarri@todotv.tv
from presenting the synopsis to its premiere. It was a very hard story that I really wanted to tell. And when Silvio de Abreu took over the Drama division, he read it and believed in its potential, so he gave me the green light and I gave it my all. The telenovela averaged 38.6 million viewers in Brazil. Did you think about how to get such a massive success when you were creating the story? Of course! I say writing a telenovela is putting a topic on the table. You take a topic to the small screen and the next day people are talking about it and debating. It’s a great responsibility, a unique opportunity to speak to so
many people through my work. That’s why I choose topics that interest not only myself, but mainly the audience. What was the biggest challenge when creating the story? In Brazil, the 7:00 pm timeslot in which it aired is a time when there’s all types of viewers: kids, teens and adults. And I really respect that. So the challenge was dealing with delicate issues like theft, crime, ethics and punishment with ease, but without being superficial. I included entertainment centers, like puppet shows or the Strass disco, where in addition to happiness and art, we find ethical, hard-working characters. What expectations do you have for ‘The Big Catch’ in the international market? The show is light, entertaining, but also has a dose of drama and a lot of emotion. The audience will soon love the strength of inspector Antonia (Vanessa Giácomo) and will be divided like she is about her love for the thief, Julio, and the policeman, Domênico (Marcos Veras). They will go nuts with María Pia and Malagueta’s crazy love. They’ll want to be friends with bon-vivant Pedrinho Guimarães (Marcos Caruso) and drink champagne with with him at the Carioca Palace. They will love to hate the villain, Sabine de Irene Ravache. ‘The Big Catch’ is an invitation for viewers to delve into the plot and be entertained with the characters. I expect it to be as successful as it was in Brazil. ttv

ith a track-record of 25 years writing at Globo, Claudia Souto has addded one more title to her long list of successful scripts: ‘The Big Catch’, the telenovela that captivated Brazilian audiences, reaching an astounding 38.6 million viewers. In an interview with ttv, the writer shared details about the behind the scenes of this successful production, which Globo is presenting at Natpe Budapest 2018. What did ‘The Big Catch’s recent success in Brazil mean for you? A great joy, a dream come true. The show took five years to air,
‘The Big Catch’ tells the story of a flustered million-dollar theft of a luxury hotel in Rio de Janeiro and its offshoots. Up to his neck in debt, the bankrupt Pedrinho Guimarães sells the Carioca Palace Hotel to young businessman Eric Ribeiro. He plans to run away with the money to New York right after the 21st birthday of his granddaughter, Luiza. But a group of employees robs the money on the big night, taking every last penny away from Pedrinho. Besides losing their peace of mind, the first-time thieves now have to live with the fear of getting caught by the police and end up getting everyone in the hotel involved in a series of conflicts. And the confusion becomes even greater when the detective in charge of the case falls in love with one of the thieves, unaware that he is behind the crime.
