OBITUARY

THE INDUSTRY SAID GOODBYE TO

ALBERTO CIURANA On the night of Tuesday, March 23, Benjamin Salinas made the sad news public. After several days hospitalized with Covid-19, the experienced and beloved executive, until now Director of Content and Distribution at TV Azteca, passed away in Mexico City.

O

n the night of Tuesday, March 23, Benjamín Salinas, VP of the Board of Grupo Salinas, took to social media to confirm the news that Alberto Ciurana had sadly passed away after a battle against Covid-19. He described the executive as “an endearing collaborator” and responsible for “much of what we build together”, referring to TV Azteca. Ciurana worked as Director of Content and Distribution of TV Azteca. His trajectory, however, is extensive within the Hispanic TV industry. Among other roles, he was President of Programming and Content at Univision Networks, and Vice President of Televisa for 15 years. His arrival at TV Azteca in 2017 represented a change in the strategy of the Mexican group’s broadcast TV channels. “For 25 years Azteca Uno had telenovelas and fiction. We wanted to evolve. We wanted to be disruptive in the market. The audience has always rewarded Azteca when it becomes an innovation leader. We closed the production of telenovelas to move on to live content, realities and game shows, and that has tripled our audiences,” he told ttv last September.

“TV and content are strongly linked to a person or a society’s moods”.

The executive had revealed back on March 10 that he had been infected with Covid-19, and that despite having mild symptoms, he required medical attention. “The irony is that on Friday I received the first dose of the vaccine. I’ll be working from home,” he said that day.

“TV is a vehicle to be able to have catharsis.”

However, his situation worsened and he had to be admitted to intensive care. On social media, networks, executives and friends shared their condolences and reacted to the surprising news. The official TV Azteca Twitter account said: “Goodbye, @AlbertoCiurana, we will remember you with affection and respect. Rest in peace”. TV Azteca Deportes’ account stated: “We are sorry about the death of our beloved Alberto Ciurana, Director of Content and Distribution of TV Azteca. Your talent, effort and passion will always be with us. Rest in peace”. “At Televisa we deeply regret the death of our former colleague Alberto Ciurana. He had an outstanding participation in pan-regional TV. We stand in solidarity with @Azteca. We will all miss him. Rest in peace”. “We are saddened to share that Alberto Ciurana, former president of Programming and Content at Univision, passed away last night. Our condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Beto,” was the message from Univision’s Public Relations Twitter account.

One of the pictures taken after he was appointed Director of Content and Distribution at TV Azteca in 2017.

“Goodbye, a big boss. A visionary, a genius on television. Passionate. Happy. Optimist at all costs. Generous and grateful like few others. You never abandoned your people. You motivated. You trusted our judgment. You demanded and rewarded. Thanks for the opportunities. Thank you for your unique gift to people,” wrote Patricia Jasín, VP of Azteca Estudios and TV Azteca Internacional. The executive also added: “As genius as he was controversial. As strong as he was defenseless. Many met you, I think very few knew you (…) The television industry loses a great, a great teacher and friend. We are going to miss the great Beto Ciurana. You were huge to so many of us”. Cisneros Media expressed: “We regret the sensitive death of Alberto Ciurana, with whom we had the pleasure of working closely when he served as President of Programming and Content of Univisión Networks.” At TTV Media Group we deeply regret the loss of such a close and beloved executive. Our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

THE PROGRAMMER’S CHALLENGE, ACCORDING TO ALBERTO CIURANA In the last interview that Alberto Ciurana did with ttv, in September 2020, when asked about the challenge that broadcast TV programmers’ have

today, the experienced executive replied: “It’s the same challenge I faced my whole life. Trying to figure out what content will reach people more massively, anticipate their tastes, understand the

moment”. In this sense, Ciurana elaborated: “TV and content are closely linked to the moods of a person or a society. All this affects the environment a lot and has a lot of

influence on what you want to see. That is what a programmer has to understand. There is a link with the human body. That is why in the morning the schedule is lighter, like breakfast.

As the day progresses, the intensity grows until 8:00 or 9:00 at night where there are intense dramas or competitions. TV is a vehicle to be able to have catharsis”.

“‘Chrysalis’ is a really incredible new series that we are so excited about, and that has been greatly anticipated, not only in Turkey but also around the world,” says Barbora Suster, Head of Latin America & Iberia for Eccho Rights. According to the executive, the story presents at first “the impression of a Cinderella story”, where “a beautiful girl meets her Prince Charming and they look set to have a

Nalan, the lead character played by Burcu Biricik, will have to really fight to stay positive and come out of the darkness. The cast also includes Feyyaz Şerifoğlu as romantic interest Sedat. “We actually think it is perfectly timed and reflective of the state of the world now and we hope that people will find some hope in her story as we still see how we are working our way out of this pandemic,” she adds. “We know already that the producers OGM Pictures have an amazing track record, currently making three of the top drama series that air each week in Turkey including ‘The

Red Room’ and ‘My Home My Destiny’ both of which we represent, so we expect nothing more than another hit of course.” ‘The Red Room’ has been another successful partnership with OGM, with the title al-

ready sold to territories like Sweden. “‘The Red Room’ has been number one in Turkey each week since its launch in September, and in the most competitive time slot each week this is a hugely impressive result,” says Suster. “It is a psychological drama about people going through difficult times and seeking therapy but it is very emotional and again very much suited to this time when viewers are also working on their own thoughts and feelings, stuck at home during the pandemic.” Another powerful drama by OGM is ‘My Home, My Destiny’, a title that launched in Turkey last Christmas, on TV8. “‘My Home, My Destiny’ has not only been a big hit in Turkey the past year but is now starting to see big results in terms of international sales”, points out Suster. “We have completed deals all around the world, including in Spain, India, Israel, almost all of Eastern Europe and we are also placing it with one of the biggest broadcasters in LatAm which we are very excited to announce soon.”

‘Chrysalis’, ‘The Red Room’ and ‘My Home, My Destiny’ are adaptions of books written by the Turkish psychiatrist Gülseren Budayıcıoğlu. Dr. Budayıcıoğlu (Ankara, 1947) has been a Turkish celebrity for many years, taking into consideration her role as a TV presenter at TRT starting in 1965, a role that earned her the alias “Miss TRT” while she was still in college. She alternated between both professions, and eventually added writer, publishing her first book in 2004. Most of her novels narrate -like ‘The Girl in the Glass’ (2019) or ‘Back to Life’ (2011)- cases she witnessed during her career. Dr. Budayıcıoğlu works have become a focus of OGM Productions’ dramas during recent years, becoming the inspiration of the mentioned titles represented by Eccho Rights and also others, like ‘The Innocents’ and the upcoming ‘The Girl Behind Glass’ and ‘If the King Loses’. NEW OPPORTUNITIES. Turkish dramas’ success in LatAm is well documented, and yet it continues to evolve, with Eccho finding new windows for its content, like Pay TV and SVOD. “This window, that was quite unexplored for Turkish content untill quite recently, is now becoming very important,” says the executive. “There are new players that are considering telenovelas for their services and that was something unthinkable only one year ago.” “I believe the digital platforms are more important every day and it’s the part of the industry that is constantly growing and developing,” Suster explains. “We are working with several players on worldwide or pan-regional level, and these deals are becoming more substantial in the results of the company, therefore our sales strategy adapted to this new trend. Nevertheless, I don’t believe that the digital will overtake the linear, or at least not just yet.”

Barbora Suster,

Head of Latin America & Iberia for Eccho Rights “’The Red Room’ has been number one in Turkey each week since its launch in September, and in the most competitive time slot each week this is a hugely impressive result.” In Europe, meanwhile, Spain continues to grow as a destination for Turkish dramas: “It looks like Turkish drama is definitely there to stay,” affirms Suster. “We are now seeing the move, not just from niche thematic channels to main broadcasters, but even to primetime slots on these major channels, which is a huge sign that the genre is working and that Spain has taken it to heart.” “We also had ‘Sisterhood’ air in prime time on Mediaset’s Canale 5 in Italy last summer, so we see a great growth potential there. We believe it is only a matter of time until we see Turkish series on air in France as well, and we have been programming a Turkish slot for Sweden’s SVT for many years now, so the spread is very apparent throughout the whole of Western Europe,” she adds.

challenge is also an opportunity and ATV Distribution seized the moment during 2020 answering the needs of its clients around the world for more quality content, after the pandemic halted productions and forced channels to scramble for shows.

ttv Magazine

ATV was able to respond -at “full speed”, as Müge Akar, Sales Deputy Manager for Europe, Asia, CIS, of the company, explainedthanks to the depth of their catalogue and the strength of its content.

24

With titles like ‘Hercai’, on its third season; the daily drama ‘Don’t Leave Me’, a new genre for the company; and even the historical drama ‘The Ottoman’, a title that had to launch during the pandemic, the distributor was ready to close many deals and enter new territories, putting them in an ideal form to face 2021, now even reinforced by new series, like the drama ‘For My Family’.

Have you added new territories you’d like to highlight? We have managed to enter Indonesia and India, and we have been quite good in Europe as well. We have started to have more deals in Africa also. It’s going pretty good for us. Do you expect the trends of 2020 to continue during 2021? Do they differ from region to region? The trends are the same everywhere, more or less. The channels started to look for relatively cheaper content, because they need to fill more slots than before. We are working a lot on our back catalogue. We have started to sell more of these kind of contents, but of course the new fresh content is also trending at the moment. We are also distributing our daytime drama, ‘Dont Leave Me’, which has been sold to Bulgaria recently. This series was also a new development for us, because previously we didn’t have a daytime series in our catalogue.

“During these difficult times we have managed to close many deals and enter new territories as well.” How has the company fared during these challenging months? During these difficult times we have managed to close many deals and enter new territories as well. This period is going quite well for us, and is the same thing for the whole TV industry. The rates of people watching content, the need for consuming new content, are developing and increasing, so we try to supply the best content available from our catalogue to our clients at full speed.

What can you share about the freshest content in your catalogue? ‘For My Family’ is the freshest content so far from ATV. It has been a great success for us, we launched it [in February] and it has been climbing up the ratings charts quite rapidly. Compared to the previous slot we had at that time, the ratings improved three times over. It has been very successful for us. We broadcast it on Saturdays’ primetime, which is also very important, because Saturdays are very competitive in the Turkish market: people tend to watch more entertainment shows or formats, but we launched a drama series, a regular Turkish dramas, and it has been doing so well, having reach 20% of the share, that we think the numbers will grow in the upcoming weeks as well. We have seen in Latin America the importance of having one territory betting on a series so the rest of the neighboring countries follow its example. Does this trend repeats itself in other regions? Yes, this domi-

‘FOR MY FAMILY’: ATV PLANS A DIGITAL PANEL DURING MIPTV WEEK The challenges that the pandemic has brought to the industry include the need to generate new ways for distributors to introduce their newest titles to their clients. “Since we cannot go to Cannes, take our talents there

and have a great party with our clients, we are launching an online panel with the leading talents of ‘For My Family’,” explained Akar. “It would introduce the series exclusively for the international clients.” At the time of writing this article,

ATV was still working on the details of the panel, but the idea was to run it parallel to Miptv 2021. “It’s something we are working on and we are very excited,” said the executive in midMarch. ‘For My Family’ tells the story of poor

but very strong-willed family that have to deal with the many challenges that life puts on their way. The series starts Celil Nalçakan, Halit Özgür Sarı, Cüneyt Mete, Fadik Sevin Atasoy and Ahu Yağtu, among others.

“The trends are the same everywhere, more or less. The channels started to look for relatively cheaper content, because they need to fill more slots than before.” and growing every day. We want to work more digital for Africa, and we also want to acquire new clients in the linear side as well. Hercai Drama

no effect is quite similar in Europe, Africa and Asia. I can tell you that with ‘Hercai’ we started in Bulgaria, it became a great success there and then we premiered in Romania, where it climbed to the number one spot since the first episode was on air. And you also know what is happening in Spain, which is great for all Turkish content, and ‘Hercai’ is also doing very good there. There is a pattern in which when a country acquires a drama, the neighbors are also interested. We see that also in the Balkans: when Albania acquires something, Macedonia and Kosovo acquired it too. It’s a trend that repeats itself in Africa and Asia.

also acquire Turkish content at the moment and are interested in our catalogue. Africa is a growing market for us.

María & Mustafa Drama

How have two of your strongest titles, ‘Hercai’ and ‘The Ottoman’, worked during these last months? ‘Hercai’ has been a best-seller for us. We are happy with the results in every single country it has entered. We have sold it to more than 30 countries at the moment. In Turkey we are airing the third season and it has been a very successful show. ‘The Ottoman’, we launched it almost during the pandemic, and even so we reached 30 countries as well. It has been quite an international success. ‘The Ottoman’ is the Wednesday prime time winner so we expect it to be a great hit and important option in terms of Turkish dramas genres, because you don’t have a lot of historical and high budget dramas. It’s already on air in Albania and its doing very well. It’s the number one show in TV Clan. I think this title would be the fastest growing series in 2021 for us, but we also expect a lot from ‘For My Family’, the new drama, because the international reaction is already very good and promising.

ttv Magazine

How has the African market taken to your dramas? Africa has been a challenge from the beginning. A very new market with low license fees that also requires some dubbing, a cost that was included in our side of the deal. It was a bit difficult to gather all these small countries in one big group and sell to them. But I think so far we have managed get in to this market and break through. Angola and Mozambique have two of our titles on air, both doing very good. There is a strong interest for ‘The Ottoman’, our historic high budget series. There is also a number of OTT and digital platforms that

Do you think that digital platforms will solve some of those issues in Africa? When you think about it, it’s about small countries and small platforms, but in the long run we believe that the African market will be a good market for the Turkish series, because we already see that the demand is very high

What can you tell us about the phenomenon in Spain? Spain opened up quite late for what we were expecting. We had to push a little bit there. I believe there will be more countries in Western Europe following Spain example. Italy, Portugal could be the next steps for the Turkish series. Let’s see what the future brings!

ill the pandemic slow down the apparently unstoppable growth of Spanish series? Yes and no. If we compare the numbers of local fictions released in recent years, the curve will flatten in 2021. And yet, it will also continue to rise: platforms and networks will launch more Spanish original series this year than ever before.

some series will end up seeing the light of day in 2022, previous experience indicates that throughout the year we will see announcements of windows for a few projects that studios and producers are now developing.

In 2019, more than 40 original series premiered in Spain. In 2020, despite the consequences of the Covid pandemic for audiovisual production, the number of new title premieres and new seasons remained in line with expectations at the beginning of the year, and rose to 68. And for 2021, there are already 86 projects with a confirmed and announced screen.

A More Interconnected Ecosystem

It is likely that the number will increase even more, because while

But before we get to everything that is coming, let’s analyze some interesting preliminary conclusions.

The speed at which we are seeing the evolution of the audiovisual ecosystem -global, but particularly in Spain- was evident in the research that went into this report. If a year ago, with the series planned for 2020, listing the amount of titles per screen was simple enough, now the equations become much more complex. The rules of the game have changed, especially in the broadcast models for TV fiction.

ttv Magazine 29

Special Report “In 2020, despite the consequences of the Covid pandemic for audiovisual production, the number of new title premieres and new seasons rose to 68.”

Atresmedia already premieres all its series first on Atresplayer Premium. Mediaset, on Amazon, and now also on Star (Disney+’s adult brand). RTVE also chose Prime Video as the first screen for its next larger-scale series, made in co-production with other studios or production companies (‘Sin límites’, ‘Historias para no dormir’, ‘Parot’). Furthermore, the birth of Buendía Estudios results in the productions participated by Atresmedia and Movistar+ not necessarily being seen in their own windows. Thus, the numbers are mixed and the picture becomes more interesting. For example, out of the 13 series that Amazon Prime Video has in its catalog, only 3 are originals from

nal fiction: Disney+ (through Star), Starzplay and Filmin. In addition, there’s the birth of large studios and the concentration of producers in large groups. The already established The Mediapro Studio was joined by Buendía Estudios and the recently launched Secuoya Studios, which plan to allocate millions of euros to projects with clear international ambition. In turn, independent production companies understand that, if they want to scale and compete in the global market, they must seek allies to obtain financial backing. Thus, Boomerang TV, Good Mood and Weekend Studio already coexist under the Mediawan umbrella; Zeppelin, DLO, Diagonal TV and -to a lesser extent- Portocabo under Banijay; Zebra and NewCo Audiovisual under the iZen Group; or Alea Media and Mandarina Bajo Mediterráneo, to name a few. And now, ttvOriginals offers an overview of the new TV fictions that Spain has in store for 2021. The complete version of this report will be published as a TTV e-Report. AMAZON PRIME VIDEO. Amazon’s plans were to launch its first three Spanish Originals in 2020. However, the delays due to the pandemic led to only ‘El Cid’ seeing the light of day. This year, in addition to ‘La tempelanza’ (Buendía Estudios and Boomerang TV), the launch of ‘Un asunto privado’ (Bambú Producciones) is also scheduled. There are no new Amazon original series announced. So far this year, the platform has already premiered four series, three of them produced by Buendía Estudios. And a few Amazon Exclusives will premiere on the streaming service for the first time. Among them, the second season of ‘El internado: Las Cumbres’ and six productions resulting from agreements that Amazon has with Mediaset España and RTVE, which can air on broadcast TV months later. All this adds up to 13 launches announced for Amazon Prime Video: 7 new series and 6 new seasons.

Another change that has been consolidated is the proliferation of screens that are beginning to venture into the original production of series in Spain. ABOUT THE METHODOLOGY

Series airing daily on broadcast TV networks were left out. Fictions without an announced screen were also not included: all the titles have been officially presented by the networks or platforms themselves, or revealed by people involved in the production.

RTVE. The public corporation has already premiered on its main channel, La 1, three new seasons of original series in this first quarter of the year, and has yet to premiere the judicial investigation thriller ‘Ana Tramel. El juego’ (Tornasol, DeAPlaneta and ZDF Enterprises), the military thriller ‘Fuerza de paz’ (Alea Media) and the second season of ‘HIT’ (Grupo Ganga). STARZPLAY. Starz’s premium streaming platform is the third window to debut this year in original series production in Spain, with two titles: ‘Express’, an action thriller by The Mediapro Studio, and ‘Nacho Vidal, una industria XXXL’ , about the media porn actor, produced by Bambú Producciones and La Claqueta PC. TNT SPAIN. TNT broke into original production in Spain in 2019 with the comedy ‘Vota Juan’ and in 2020 it premiered its spin-off, ‘Vamos Juan’. For 2021, the channel is doubling down with two new stories: ‘Maricón perdido’ (El Terrat / The Mediapro Studio), created by writer Bob Pop and freely inspired by his own life; and a new collaboration by Buendía Estudios and Suma Latina, an untitled series about a Miss who returns to her town 40 years after her.

NETFLIX. And if Movistar+’s plans seem overwhelming, they pale in comparison with what Netflix has in store: 21 original Spanish titles announced, 13 new ones and 8 returns.

Only the so-called “premium fiction” was considered in the preparation for this report.

two short-form series (10 episodes of 10 minutes) are expected: ‘El tiempo que te doy’ and ‘Ídolo’.

If the projects of series in development or in production announced by producers or studios that do not yet have a screen (or do, but have not made it public) were added, the 180 titles would be exceeded. In addition, older projects were eliminated, announced in 2019 or before and that, at least for now, seem to be more in a drawer than on the table.

OTHERS. Orange TV, which debuted with ‘Caminantes’ in 2020, this year will be the exclusive screen in Spain for the second season of ‘The Head’, with Spanish production and participation (The Mediapro Studio, along with Hulu Japan and HBO Asia). In addition, regional channels continue to bet on original fiction, spoken in local languages. The Catalan TV3 prepares titles such as ‘Moebius’ (Veranda TV) and ‘Buga Buga’ (Aguacate & Calabaza Films); while the Galician TVG has already premiered a black comedy and is already filming the second installment of ‘Auga seca’ (Portocabo and SPI from Portugal), which can also be seen on HBO.

‘The Shadow Team’ follows a group of elite agents that are selected for a confidential mission. The condition for joining is very important: they must be willing to die. To become shadows, their deaths have to be official, with funerals held and not a single person, no matter how close and dear to them, can know the truth. The new series follows the successful footsteps of the biggest hit of 2020, the drama ‘The Innocents’, produced by OGM Pictures, a smashing hit that has owned the season for TRT 1, starting strong -14 weeks in a row as the number one title- and never losing steam.

lcabrera@todotv.tv

‘The Innocents’ is based on the memoirs of Turkish psychiatrist Gülseren Budayıcıoğlu and presents real experiences. It tells the story of the love story between Han (Birkan

Sokullu) and İnci (Farah Zeynep Abdullah) and their complicated relationship with their friends and families. Ezgi Mola, Merve Dizdar and Gizem Katmer complete the cast. TRT is well-known for its historical masterpieces, so it’s not surprise that ‘The Great Seljuks: Guardians of Justice’ has proven to be another spectacular drama, with an assertive story, a fabulous and talented cast and incredible visuals. The series has been a local success and has seen is international penetration expand during the last months. Of the four, ‘An Anatolian Tale’ could be considered the closest to the most traditional Turkish drama, with a love story marked by the need to overcome hardships and the importance of persevering and never losing hope. The drama, produced by Kopru Film, follows the life of Taner, a dreamer from a small town, and his childhood love, Dilek, who comes back to the town after years away. At the same time, Mistco keeps gathering interest for their ongoing titles, like ‘Melek: A Mother’s Struggle’ and ‘The Last Emperor’, while their strong library, that includes dramas like ‘Resurrection: Ertugrul’, keeps expanding worldwide. ne of the most anticipated products in the international market is ‘Genesis’, Record TV’s new super production, which expands the highly demanded universe of biblical dramas created by the Brazilian giant.

In the following interview with ttv, Delmar Andrade, Director of International Sales at Record TV, shares details about this production made and released during the pandemic, as well as his vision of the television industry in the new normal. How has this time been for Record TV? This time has been the most difficult for global TV, but in Brazil the problem is much bigger, because we are a territory with more than 200 million people. So, although the pandemic really affected us, we had the opportunity to be the first

samoroso@todotv.tv

TV in Latin America to premiere a telenovela during the pandemic. We are producing the telenovela ‘Genesis’, which we started exactly in the middle of the pandemic. All Brazilian TV channels are offering older titles. The production of ‘Genesis’ in this context has not been easy at all… The effort was tremendous. The concern for the cameramen and actors was major. Everything had to be under close supervision. We released ‘Genesis’ with an average of 19 rating points and peaks of 25. It was something incredible for us. Its premiere at the end of January is considered the best in recent years for the channel. Filming was done during the pandemic, then suspended and picked up again. They were suspended many times. We are still filming it. We are about 15 or 20 episodes ahead and the concern remains the same.

Like other Biblical super productions by Record TV, it was being recorded in Morocco. What happened when production came to a halt? For three months prior to the pandemic we were in Morocco and su-

can connect with people, you receive and offer new ideas. It is extremely important that we bring them back, but for that we need to have safety and health.

ddenly we had an order from the Moroccan government to withdraw the production team, canceling all production. In Morocco there were 45 Brazilians who did not have the conditions to return to Brazil because the flights from Casablanca to Brazil were interrupted. We had to have an exclusive plane for our team to return to our country. It was something we could never have imagined.

We believe that the Mipcom event may be a bit complicated, because we do not know what Europe is going to require for us to travel there. That side of it depends on the governments and that could create some obstacles. Maybe young buyers can get the vaccine in 2022. However, we will be at Mipcom offering our products.

Production had to be reformulated then… Yes. Today we are only filming in Brazil, but a large part of our productions were made in Canada, Morocco, the United States and Israel. With ‘Genesis’ we are talking about a story that continues to expand the biblical universe of large-scale, budget-friendly Record TV super productions… To give you an idea of numbers: more than 250 actors, 8,500 extras and 140 stuntmen. About 300 professionals in the production area, in addition to generating about 800 direct jobs. We also created a set in our studios in Brazil with 16 large buildings, with a total of 11,000m2 of built area. ‘Genesis’ is the largest production that Record TV is presenting to the world. Not even ‘Moses and the 10 commandments,’ which was a great production that we filmed in three countries, reaches this new standard. We have about 16 Biblical series. How do you see the television market in this context? The market is exhausted. There was a small part of our clients who had difficulties and we were extremely supportive. But the reason why we cannot say that 2020

What would you highlight about ‘Genesis’ as a television product? I think ‘Genesis’ offers the international market something that’s never been seen at this level. We are

“Initially, the telenovela was designed to have 100 episodes, but 150 are already confirmed to be produced, and we will possibly go up to 180.”

was a tragic year, although it was extremely difficult, has been because of the union of producers and clients, which is the only way we can move forward. We have had to protect our customers, in the same way that they help us by buying our product. At Record TV we have an extremely broad vision of the market, which is why we are sacrificing at this moment so that the market has a new product, because the market needs to have new products as quickly as possible. Our concern was to have a new telenovela, because everyone was doing reruns. Record TV’s biblical product has also reached streaming platforms. The digital market is in a phase of amplitude, growing every day. It’s the future, but still the broadcast TV market controls more than twice the market. But of course, many are exhibiting our products. We have had growth in digital sales.

I think it is essential to return to the face-to-face events. It is necessary to have physical contact with the client. We cannot throw away the last 60 years of the market for a sale of rights by video conference. Tradeshows are necessary. In those events you

We are presenting the world market with a product that, in addition to entertaining and generating empathy, is clearly informing how the Bible works. It is an extremely well made product, without ideology. We do not offer a biased or religious biblical story; it is a true and clear story. It is a television product that - in addition to its formal quality - comes at a time where uncertainty would seem to make it necessary ... It is the purpose of this production: in addition to entertaining, creating a safe harbor where the person can become aware of history and understand that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We are between 15 and 20 episodes ahead. We work according to the market. The product is supported by advertisers. Initially, the telenovela was designed to have 100 episodes, but 150 are already confirmed to be produced, and we will possibly go up to 180. A message for the industry? Everyone knows that we always offer something new. Sure, we also work with our catalog, but this year is not going to be any different. We will be one of the few who had the determination to carry a product filmed in a pandemic.

ttv Magazine / Telenovelas

How is it being presented to the international market? We have been in very direct contact with our clients for more than 15 years. They are all getting information, videos and updates on ‘Genesis’ and, we are preparing a great package to offer the market.

LATIN AMERICA

TV FICTION IS BACK ON TRACK By Sebastián Amoroso

@sebamoroso

One year after the halt in production for TV fiction, broadcast networks across the region are starting to produce and premiere original productions again. Up next, we present a review of what has already made its way onto the TV screen and what’s in store for the year ahead.

fter all the uncertainty generated in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, slowly the production of fiction projects for prime time has been reactivated and the main broadcast TV networks in Latin America are launching their new titles, in some cases with reruns. One of the most prominent examples is ‘Genesis’, Record TV’s super biblical production, which had to suspend filming new episodes in 2020 and which in January of this year had its long-awaited premiere, managing to become the best debut for the Brazilian network in the last five years, with 15.7 rating points in São Paulo. Moreover, América TV in Peru premiered on March 1 the telenovela ‘Dos hermanas’, a Del Barrio Producciones production that had to be taken down from the air after eleven episodes, due to the start of the pandemic a year ago. Its re-release stands as one of the great fiction bets for Peru’s leading channel in 2021. The same happens with Globo in Brazil, which after almost a year away from broadcast TV, fiction returned on March 1 with the telenovela ‘Corazón de madre’. The production, written by Manuela Dias and under the artistic direction of José Luiz Villamarim, had its filming interrupted due to the pandemic at the beginning of March last year and its first part was broadcast throughout the year.

“Fiction production for prime time has been reactivated and the main broadcast TV networks in Latin America are launching their new titles.”

In addition, Polka in Argentina confirmed to ttv that it is already in the pre-production phase of a new prime time strip for El Trece, entitled ‘La 1 5/18’.

The renowned Argentine production company is thus betting on production again after almost a year when it suspended -and then

canceled- filming for the daily series ‘Separadas’ at the beginning of the pandemic. The new El Trece fiction will begin filming in April at locations in Villa 31 in Buenos Aires and, in sceneries mounted in the company’s Baires Studios. And in Colombia both Caracol Televisión and Canal RCN are also preparing their new fictions for 2021, which include premieres, new seasons and remakes. Caracol Televisión has already announced that the telenovelas ‘El hijo del cacique’ and ‘Los medallistas’, two new fiction projects that the channel is already working on. Meanwhile, Canal RCN is preparing new seasons for its original fictions ‘Pá quererte’ and ‘Enfermeras’, as well as filming the remake of the telenovela ‘Café con aroma de mujer’, a classic of the Latin American genre.

Televisa, on the other hand, was one of the first television networks in the region to film new stories in 2020. By June of last year it had managed to return to the sets. Its first pandemic production was ‘La mexicana y el güero’, under strict security measures. Now, the Mexican network is already working on the adaptation of the Colombian telenovela ‘La dama de Troya’, which will be titled ‘La desalmada’. The premiere is scheduled for the second half of 2021.

ttv Magazine / Telenovelas

Over in Chile fictions are also returning to prime time on local TV: Mega has already successfully premiered the comedy ‘Edificio Corona’ -inspired by the pandemic-, and is preparing the arrival of ‘Demente’, its long-awaited nighttime television series.

DEL BARRIO FILMS IN A PANDEMIC Hugo Coya, General Manager of Del Barrio Producciones

Peruvian producer Del Barrio Producciones has just re-released the telenovela ‘Dos hermanas’, which had been taken off the air after its 11th episode when the pandemic went global in March of 2020. By Sebastián Amoroso

el Barrio Producciones has been one of the few independent producers in Latin America which continued to develop its fiction lineup during the pandemic. During 2020, the Peruvian production company premiered the fictions ‘Mi vida sin ti’ and ‘La otra orilla’ on América TV and, on March 1, it released ‘Dos hermanas’, the telenovela that had been taken off the air after its 11th episode aired in March of last year and now had its long-awaited return. In dialogue with ttv, Hugo Coya, general manager of Del Barrio Producciones, spoke about the production company’s new initiatives, the experience of filming in a pandemic and the new fiction titles for America TV’s prime time. I imagine the company was excited about the broadcast of ‘Dos hermanas’ on América TV… A year has passed since we suspended all filming as a result of the health crisis. We were somewhat afraid, because although we are perhaps one of the few production companies in Latin America that has continued to produce during the crisis, since

“We are perhaps one of the few producers in Latin America that has continued to produce during the crisis.” we restarted operations in June, luckily we have not had a single case of contagion in our productions. How was the experience of developing this telenovela? With ‘Dos hermanas’ the peculiarity was that it had a more complex story than usual. It took place in several ci-

How has the relationship with América TV been during this time? We have just renewed the five-year exclusive contract with América TV. We are very excited. América TV, in addition to being the leading channel, has a relationship with us that has grown over time. We have had prime time for fifteen years and the partnership has been highly beneficial to both companies. There is a possibility to expand this link; not only to produce for prime time, but other time slots as well, but everything is conditioned by the pandemic, so I would prefer not to make any announcements just yet.

ties across the country, the number of extras was much higher, then the biosecurity protocols forced social distancing, so we could not stay completely true to the story. And it was a story that had already began. We already had 11 episodes on the air and the audience already knew the story. We waited for the best moment, and happily we

How many titles do you produce for América TV? We do three productions a year. We produce twelve months of the year. Our productions are also exported. They are seen in various countries. We already have a conquered market and now the demand has been greater with this pandemic. So we have productions that are already planned. It had never happened to us before. Can you mention any upcoming projects? We are preparing a musical series that still has no title and no protagonists. We should start it in May. It is a project that is conditioned by the pandemic. You cannot plan like in a normal year. It is a complex situation.

“We are preparing a musical series that still has no title and no protagonists.”

Del Barrio Producciones is also making progress in the development of a premium series that will be a co-production with Spain. The fiction has a tentative title ‘La hija del conquistador’, and is centered on the life of Francisca Pizarro, daughter of Francisco

Pizarro. In recent months, the project has undergone some changes from the initial plan, including its extension. Initially designed as a series with 2 seasons of 13 episodes each, now it will be only one season. “We are in a pandemic, therefore, we are thinking of

a one-season project, but always with the same essence, with Peruvian and Spanish actors, filming in Peru and Spain. We are in advanced conversations with Spanish producers. It would be a coproduction, but we are already very advanced with the characters”,

said Hugo Coya, general manager of Del Barrio Producciones. The series is based on the book by historian María Rostworowski, specialized in the conquest of Peru, about the life of Francisca Pizarro, who is considered the first Peruvian

mestizo. “We are waiting for the pandemic to allow us to move forward. It is a project that will have many extras and locations. We are moving forward with the adaptation along with Santiago Rocangoglio. We are almost at the final stages”, he explained.

Cecilia Gómez de la Torre, general manager of Tondero Distribución, spoke to ttv about the Peruvian company’s fiction projects for Amazon, Netflix and Movistar Play, among others; in addition to presenting ‘Princesas’ and ‘Dos hermanas’, both from América TV in Peru, at Miptv.

T

ondero has been an extremely active company over the last few months, diversifying its operations between production, acquisition, distribution and exhibition of films and series, both original and international. In the following interview with ttv, Cecilia Gómez de la Torre, general manager of Tondero Distribución, spoke about the company’s production projects for Amazon, Netflix, Movistar Play, among others; in addition to the international market presentation of its

telenovela ‘Princesas’, recently premiered on América TV in Peru. How is Tondero experiencing this unprecedented moment in history? We have reinvented ourselves in some ways and we have continued with our international productions. We opened Auto+Cinema last year and partnered with Netzun to launch the OTT platform Netzun-Tondero. That led us to generate other types of original products, designed for SVOD and that we could later adapt for other platforms. These projects go first in Auto+Cinema, then in TVOD to Netzun-Tondero and then we are forming alliances as co-producers with Movistar Play and América TV. We have already produced some of these series that will later have their movie version.

“We have reinvented ourselves in some ways and we have moved forward with our international productions.”

What are these series? One is the series ‘Raúl con Soledad’, which did very well. Now we have made an agreement for a new one that premiered on February 14 as an original on Movistar Play, which is called ‘¿Es cupido?’. It’s a 10-episode series, a romantic comedy based on a blind dating platform that moves through an algorithm with very funny results. It is a fresh, youthful and different type of series. The creator is Raúl Suazo, a wellknown Peruvian director and actor, together with Renato Bonifaz. Were these two series filmed during the pandemic? They were projects during the pandemic. We created different things as a

Dos hermanas Series

“We launched ‘Princesas’, one of América TV’s most important telenovelas in recent time.” “On February 25, the series ‘El último bastión’ premiered on Netflix.” which we are already having very advanced conversations. We also have ‘Dos hermanas’, which América TV began filming, then premiered it, and then the pandemic struck, so they had to put it on standby. And now it was released again in March. That is the other new product that we are going to share with clients shortly.

result of the success we had with the platform. We closed the agreement with Movistar and América TV for five series and film projects. These ones were made during the pandemic with all the safety protocols. In fact, we just finished a movie. But not only in Peru. We are also co-producing a lot from Tondero Spain. New co-productions with Spanish companies are coming. One of these projects is ‘La casa de caracol’ for Amazon Prime… That’s right. It was filmed last year. It was part of the team and actors from Peru. It stars Paz Vega, Javier Rey, Carlos Alcántara and Norma Martínez. We are working with other projects that will be announced when they are in full production. There is also the original movie for Netflix. How is that project coming? We are fully on track. We are working with several important projects. Some were a bit late due to the pandemic, but they have already been activated again and are in the process of development.

However, we were able to premiere some films that we represented in other countries, such as the Chilean horror film ‘Contra el demonio’, which in Mexico during a pandemic had more than 120 thousand viewers. It also premiered in Bolivia and it is also going to be released in Central America and Ecuador… We have four films that are waiting to be released in theaters.

We also represent TV Peru with very positive results. On February 25, the series ‘El último Bastión’ was released on Netflix. It is something very important for the Peruvian industry. It is a period series with many top-level actors and it also coincides with the country’s bicentennial. It is a very important recognition that allows the talent from my country to be seen around the world.

And there’s also our comedies, which are traveling as a format. We are now in the process of signing one of our projects that has been sold to a company in France to make their own version.

We not only invest in Peru, but in Latin America. We are co-producers of ‘Dedicada a mi ex’, the first Enchufe.tv movie that just premiered on Netflix, which has been very successful. I understand that it is number one in Ecuador and Bolivia. Very soon the second movie is coming called ‘Misfit’ and we are also going to be involved. Being united helps us to continue building a Latin American industry.

What are the news at the television distribution level? We launched ‘Princesas’, one of the most important telenovelas from América TV in recent years. It is a 60-episode title that is based on the classic princesses, but brought to the present day with a narrative of stories that come together. It has sparked a lot of interest at Natpe. The production levels are above the standard and also being such a feminine issue, for housewives, the results that América TV is having in the prime are incredible. In some segments, exceeding 20-something rating points. There are several countries with

At the time, Tondero announced some premium fiction projects, for example, the series ‘El tunel’. What is the status on that? They are advanced. We are keeping it a secret because of how massive they are going to be. We can’t announce anything yet. They are on the right path. I think Miguel Valladares is doing an extraordinary job and when we can announce something it will be something important for our industry.

ttv Magazine

How have you handled the issues with production in this context? Now we are in a phase that’s practically the same as the initial one. We are working with fifteen days of quarantine, but there are certain things that do continue to move. Cinemas have not opened since the pandemic began in March of last year. For us it has been a bit complicated, because we have not been able to re-

lease some great films that we already had ready.

We have a very broad catalog representing a large percentage of producers and directors; not only Peruvians, but Spaniards, Argentines, Chileans, Ecuadorians, Colombians... And we are also generators of co-production alliances.

Sovtelexport has been at the forefront of Russian content’s growth around the world, a trend that looks to continue with titles like ‘The Terrible’, ‘Call Me Mother’ and ‘The Optimists: Caribbean season’.

R

According to Julia Matyash, Head of Sovtelexport, among the key factors for the recent success of the company are the “better quality of the product, relevant genres (period dramas, dramas inspired by true events, film versions of the bestselling books) and vast multi-genre catalog.”

Matyash also agrees that the pandemic played a role and the distributor also did its part by optimizing the marketing strategy and taking full advantage of “20 years spent on the international market, brand strengthening, increased recognition, rise in foreign distributors and media companies’ loyalty”. However, Matyash is quick to clarify that any success from Russian content is

ussian audiovisual content penetration keeps growing around the world and Sovtelexport has played a huge part of the phenomenon, being the distributor arm of Russia Television and Radio. In 2020, Sovteleport was able to double its annual profit, helping Russia to become a significant player on the global series market.

first and foremost due to the quality of the product itself. “Over the past few years, dramas produced in Russia acquired their own signature style that distinguishes them, in the eyes of the foreign media professionals, from other projects of the same genre,” explains the executive. “Among their stand-out features are a certain narrative pace, deep thought-through characters and, of course, the universal truths framed by the national tint. Thus, the final product results in being clear and relevant for the audience without losing its authenticity.”

The Terrible Period Drama

Call Me Mother Drama

“Visual imagery of our content improves every year. We can say it is on a par with the quality of projects produced by the largest world studios,” adds Matyash. The genre that better represent these impressive productions highs is period -or costumedramas, which have become a huge part of Sovetelexport catalogue, being responsible for the company breaking through in some important markets. “’Ekaterina’ opened Latin America for us sales-wise,” explains Matyash. “The series set the quality bar pretty high, but other costume dramas like ‘Sophia’, ‘Anna Karenina’, ‘Godunov’ and now ‘The Terrible’ maintain the bar on its level. This type of content became our hallmark. We often receive requests like ‘We want something like ‘Ekaterina’’”. The mentioned ‘The Terrible’, is a new period drama that follows the life of the most controversial and mysterious Russian ruler, Ivan IV, better-known as Ivan “The Terrible”. On the drama side, ‘The Blood Widow’ is a combination of a costume drama with a thriller. “The series sparked interest of Latin American distributors,” says Matyash. “Several companies are currently considering this title for purchasing.” The drama offering is led by ‘Call Me Mother’, a love story set during the 1930’s repressions, and ‘The Optimists: Caribbean Season’, a spy drama that follows a Russian operative

that falls in love with an American woman during the Cuban Missile Crisis. “Our documentaries are highly demanded, like ‘Held Captive by Rubbish’ and ‘Wonders of Russia’, as well as action feature films, like ‘Kandahar’ or ‘Two Legends’”, adds the executive. Another big factor positioning RTR’s offer as a powerhouse in the present and near future is that a lot of their titles are mini-series, an ideal content for the needs of the digital world. “Our catalogue is praised by industry professionals and we are currently considering commercial offers from a number of Latin American streaming platforms,” explains Matyash. “We have just started developing digital rights sales in the region; previously, we focused on selling them to the English-speaking countries, including Amazon Prime. “Although the market format and marketing strategy have changed, our main working principles remained the same,” says the executive. “As before, Sovtelexport prioritizes high-quality of the content, fully personalized approach to each and every region, channel, platform, and marketing support of the partner during the launch phase.”

Julia Matyash,

Head of Sovtelexport (Russia TV and Radio) “Interest of the international media industry for Russian content is growing - it is an absolute trend nowadays. Russia is becoming a significant player on the global series market”.

SOVTELEXPORT DEEPENS ITS SPANISH REACH establishing long-standing partnerships in Mexico, Colombia and Chile. An exciting title for the region is ‘Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes’. “The book ‘Zuleikha Opens Her Eyes’ was translated into Spanish, and Spanish-speaking countries have heard of it already. We are currently working on the Spanish dubbing for the series to expand sales on these territories,” details the executive.

ttv Magazine

A good example of how much Sovtelexport offer has grown in the past years comes from a recent development in their website: “On our website, sales.vgtrk. com, we opened a special section called ‘In Spanish’”, where a buyer can find over 40 projects of different genres adapted for Spanish speakers,” pointed out Matyash. Ibero-America has become an important market for RTR titles, with the distributor

Coixet; the president of the Video Game Association, Valeria Castro; the ambassador of the Spain Film Commission, James Costos; o Nicolás Matji, president of the Federation of Animation and Audiovisual Effects, Diboos. The plan’s goals are to turn Spain into a leading country in audiovisual production in the digital age, a hub for international investment and talent, and strengthen its industry-services ecosystem to export and compete in international markets.

The plan includes a public investment of 1.603 billion euros between 2021 and 2025 and its goal is to increase the audiovisual production made in Spain by 30% at the end of that period. During the plan’s presentation, Pedro Sánchez pointed out that “the audiovisual industry is key due to its weight in employment and the economy. But also because of its weight in our cultural identities and in our international projection”.

In addition, he explained that at a time when the Spanish audiovisual industry enjoys extraordinary worldwide recognition, it is necessary to “build a sustainable, richer and more fruitful ecosystem that enables the growth that the immense talent that our industry harbors deserves.”

industry, based on the strengths that Spain possesses, such as a solvent audiovisual industry, well-trained and prestigious professionals, a globally recognized creative capacity and a comparative advantage in the growing global market for audiovisual production in Spanish. The plan is based on an integral perspective of the audiovisual sector in all its formats (cinema, series, shorts, advertising, video games or animation) and an integrating vision that transcends the audiovisual to link with culture, tourism and the country’s own image. The measures included in “Spain, the Audiovisual Hub of Europe” are articulated in four axes based on three priorities: turning Spain into a pole of attraction for audiovisual production, reducing administrative and regulatory costs; improve the competitiveness of companies through the application of new technologies that allow them to compete in a digitized market; and generate talent by reducing the gender gap. The plan’s first axis, with a planned investment of 240 million euros, includes actions to digitize both audiovisual production and audience monitoring, to promote the implementation and improvement of platforms dedicated to Spanish audiovisual production and its distribution, that favor their international commercialization, especially that of those projects that generate collaborative ecosystems between SMEs. In addition, a single point of information and a centralized point of contact will be created, the “Spain Audiovisual Hub Bureau”, which will provide information, assistance and support to potential investors in the sector, both to foreign companies wishing to invest in Spain, as well as to Spanish companies interested in the internationalization of their activity. In this area, an internationalization program for the audiovisual sector will be developed, developed by the Ministry of Culture and Sports and ICEX Spain Export and Investments, and a Program to attract filming and foreign investment.

ritish distributor DCD Rights has made variety a specialty. The company started 2021 with a catalog made “for all tastes” with fiction content, unscripted titles and factual television.

“We have a wide variety of new programming for Miptv, with female drama content, male and female factual shows and music content,” said Rick Barker, Director of Sales for DCD Rights in an interview with ttv.

He highlighted the arrival of the fourth season of Canadian series ‘Frankie Drake Mysteries’, which is ideal for female audiences. “Season 4 is currently airing on CBC; the series has worked very well for us so far,” commented the executive. Something similar happens with ‘My Life Is Murder’, whose second season is filming in New Zealand and will air on Acorn TV, UK TV and TVNZ.

SERIES IN SPANISH. DCD Rights is now working with a new division destined to distributing series in “European languages”. In this sense, over a year ago the company added two titles in Spanish: the Spain-Portugal co-production ‘Auga Seca’ (‘Dry Water’) and the Chilean series ‘La cacería’ (distributed internationally as ‘Inspector Rojas’). “Both have really worked very well, we are very pleased. We are just starting with the distribution of series in other European languages, but we are very happy so far

‘La cacería’ (‘Inspector Rojas’), meanwhile, was sold to “virtually everyone, from Canada to New Zealand,” he detailed. And is the company looking for more series in Spanish? According to Rick Barker, without a doubt. “We have a very active acquisitions team that is constantly looking for opportunities, reading scripts, developments and offering comments, casting suggestions, treatments… We are working a lot in that area and hopefully soon we can make some announcements,” he explained. DCD’s goal, he added, is to enter the series in very early stages where they can contribute monetarily as co-producers and bring other pre-sale partners closer. “It is very unusual these days for programs to be funded by a single broadcaster, so multiple partners are needed at the top of the table and that is something that we at DCD have been doing for the last five or six years.” “A good example is ‘My Life is Murder’. We were able to not only be one of the main investors, but we brought together several partners to make the second season possible,” he concluded.

ttv Magazine

Also within the female target is ‘The Secret She Keeps’, which has been the sixth most popular content of all 2020 on the BBC iPlayer, with 17 million views. “We are very proud of this series,” said Barker, who also highlighted unscripted female titles, such as T’he Wonderful Bridezillas’ from We TV in the US, already in season 16, and ‘Marriage Bootcamp’.

“All this, in addition to our new musical content such as ‘Great Songwriters’, which works very well for us in Latin America and is already in production for its third season,” he explained. “And also culinary content, which we always sell well to countries like Spain or regions like Latin America,” he added.

According to the executive, ‘Auga Seca’ has been sold to countries such as Australia and New Zealand, in addition to its agreement for Spain and Portugal with HBO. “We are also having negotiations for the series in Latin America,” he assured.
