he Copa America Chile 2015 tournament as Latin America’s big televised sporting event this year, added to increased ad sales, growing competition b e t w e e n Tu r k i s h a n d l o cal telenovelas, new e n te r ta i n m e n t fo r m a t s stealing the spotlight and the rise of OTT platforms; makes the continent’s broadcast TV arena the place to be. In the following report, ttv gathers answers from so me of the industry’s main Programming and Acquisition executives from leading TV networks in Latin America to get an inside look into the programming strategies they are developing for 2015. “We are really very happy with our performance in 2014. For the first time, we presented second seasons of our drama productions ‘The Lord of the Skies’, which was a smashing success reaching 42% market share. In addition, ‘Acero, Woman of Steel’ was the most-watched show in its 10 PM timeslot, surpassing Univision in 15 of 17 weeks,” said Glenda Pacaninis, Senior VP of Programming and Content at Telemundo Media, US Hispanic. “With these premieres we established the super-series franchise at Telemundo and the genre’s success was evident. During the 2014-2015 season, this timeslot experienced the greatest and fastest growth in its history among adults 18-49, rising 62% from the previous season: 1.22 million viewers from 751,000,” she added. Super series, same as the US Hispanic network’s daily shows like ‘Un nuevo día’,‘Al rojo vivo’ and ‘Noticiero Telemundo’, also saw their audiences increase in 2014 and continue to do so this year.

The Telemundo network is known for its original content. Currently, over 80% of the programming offered Mondays through Fridays during its primetime slots (from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM), is original content. As far as entertainment formats go, Telemundo offers ‘The Voice Kids’, which

Telemundo is also presenting two new major productions for the weekends: ‘The Surprise of your Life’ and ‘Big Brother’. “It’s the first time this format is being produced for Hispanic audiences in the US, offering a notable amount of exclusive content through the show itself, digital platforms and social networks,” she added. “We are currently airing ‘Cannibals’, with Juan José Campanella, which is a true gem produced in 4K, and we are preparing our telenovela ‘Lioness’,” said Tomás Yankelevich, director of Global Content and International Business at Telefe in Argentina. “We are also offering local adaptations of ‘Rising Star’ and ‘Master Chef’; and we will soon present ‘Master Chef Jr.’,” he added. As for entertainment shows, Telefe has signed a deal with Televisa for ‘Stand Up For Your Country’, which airs in the afternoons as ‘Laten los corazones’. “We will potentially also air ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’ after ‘Elegidos’ (‘Rising Star’) is done.Then we have ‘El huevo o la gallina’ and ‘Raid the Cage’, already on the air. In the future we will probably have ‘Boom!’ and the fiction series ‘Story of a Clan’, produced by Underground. Then obviously we have our four newscasts and the innovative show ‘U Play’, focused on content creators and audiences on YouTube.” Of course, Telefe also has Turkish dramas. It’s currently airing ‘Ezel’ and another title. “Telenovelas from Turkey have two or three elements that make them successful here. But as it happens with every industry, there are stories that worked very well and others that premiered here and couldn’t find an audience. It’s not a phenomenon in itself. The phenomenon isn’t that everything that comes out of Turkey is a success.You have to know how to choose correctly and there

From 2014 to 2015, ‘Un nuevo día’s audience share grew 54% from the previous season, with a 51% growth among adults 18-49. ‘Noticiero Telemundo’ rose 11% in total viewership and 12% among adults 18-49 this season, while ‘Al rojo vivo’ jumped 6%,” Pacaninis explained.

Rede Record’s results in 2014 in Brazil were “extremely positive,” according to Marcelo Caetano Ribeiro, director of Programming. “Record continues to grow consistently every month, offering relevant content, with original series like ‘The Miracles of Jesus’ and ‘Conselho Tutelar’, which scored excellent ratings on TV and great engagement on social networks. This shows Record’s strategy of offering original productions has proven to be successful, causing the network to grow notable,” he said. The network produces most of the content in its lineup, including series, newscasts and entertainment shows; the main pillars of its programming. “We also include internationally successful films and series; franchises such as ‘CSI’, ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Once Upon a Time’. All these shows had a space devoted to them in our programming and met their goals, both in terms of audience and revenue,” Caetano said. In terms of entertainment formats, ‘I Can do That’ and ‘The Farm’ registered excellent audience ratings for Rede Record in 2014.

In this sense, the network is now investing on a new edition of ‘Fazenda Com Celebridades’,‘The Apprentice’ and ‘Além do Peso’. “In the international market, Rede Record is betting on finding formats that allow interactivity between the content and the viewer. This is a worldwide trend that Record will also follow,” he said. The Brazilian network is also presenting its hit biblical telenovela ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’, which registered excellent ratings during its premiere.“Each year Record specializes in this type of epic production with high-quality standards,” Caetano said.

reaching an overall, Mondays through Sundays share of 25.4%, and 32.6% in the Monday through Friday share; standing as the leader for the third year in a row on national television. “During 2014, 17 of the 20 highest-rated shows in Colombian television were produced by Caracol,” said Camilo Acuña,VP of Programming at the network. “’The Voice Kids’, with a 51.3% share and an average 16.4 rating, was the highestrated show in 2014. In second place, ‘The Voice of Freedom, Helenita Vargas’, with an average 13.7 rating, followed by Colombia’s soccer matches with 52.6% share and 13.3 rating.” Moreover, one of Caracol’s most important accomplishments during 2014 was the success obtained by ‘Gol Caracol’, which presented the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 matches.“Caracol’s broadcasts registered an average 43.3% share and 9.6 rating,” he said. The Colombian network also continued to strengthen its already successful brands such as the third season of ‘My Name Is’ and ‘Desafío Marruecos’. “It’s a great advantage to have such a talented team that’s always searching for the best entertainment formats, as well as its attention to detail and adaptability. This translates into the growth of the network’s entertainment timeslot, thanks to productions like ‘Colombia’s Next Top Model’ with 30.9%; ‘My Name Is’ with 36.6%; ‘Desafío Marruecos’ with 34.1%; ‘La Prueba’ with 29.5% and ‘The Voice Kids’ with 51.3%,” he said. The executive highlighted two big premieres for 2015, such as ‘Desafío India, la rencarnación’; a new season of ‘The Voice’, the series ‘Men Cry Too’; the miniseries ‘Laura, an Extraordinary Life’; and the series ‘La Cacica’, among others.

Rede Record is also presenting celebrity reality shows, such as ‘The Farm’, ‘The Apprentice’ and formats such as ‘Cake Boss’ in association with Discover y Channel. “We also included the PanAmerican Games in Toronto exclusively in July. It will be a preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, for which Rede Record is planning a complete coverage,” he concluded.

Latina in Perú (formerly Frecuencia Latina) premiered several renowned international formats in 2014, both Mondays through Fridays and on the weekends.“’The Voice’ was recognized by the National Advertisers Asociation as the Best TV Show; ‘My Name Is…’, ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’, ‘Peru’s Got Talent’, among others, were a great addition,” said Cecilia Gómez de la Torre, head of Programming at the Peruvian network.

In Colombia, 2014 proved to be an excellent year for Caracol Televisión,

a ratings’ leader on Saturday nights; as well as weekly entertainment formats ‘Amor, amor, amor’, ‘Bienvenida la tarde’ and the national fiction series ‘Comando Alfa’.

As for fiction, we are producing telenovela formats and our own series. In terms of sports, we will have major sports events such as international boxing tournaments, soccer and volleyball, among others,” she said. The executive also said that given the success Latina has obtained with international fiction formats, they will open the primetime slot with telenovelas. “This allows these products to get our attention” in the content distribution market.

COMPETITION BETWEEN LOCAL AND TURKISH TELENOVELAS CONTINUES TO GROW ACROSS THE REGION.

Televisa in Mexico focused on aligning and strengthening the programming and identity of each of its broadcast TV channels. “Our telenovelas, together with series, newscasts and reality shows, proved that the Canal de las Estrellas is the most important network in Mexican television,” said Elsa Vizcarra, VP of Programming at Televisa. Channel 5 won its place as the most important Social TV channel among the country’s younger viewers. “’PM’ is a

referent in terms of entertainment among young audiences. We’ve integrated this content with foreign productions within the lineup, increasing the digital experience we offer through the app, which bolstered Channel 5’s multiplatform performance,” she said. “’PM’ was the best entertainment offer for the young adults demographic with shows such as ‘Me caigo de risa’ and ‘Turnocturno’. The combination of original content and acquired series such as ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Spartacus’, added to blockbusters, have made for an unprecedented success,” she added. Gala TV remains an important channel for international telenovelas, classic shows, national and international news, and Mexican movies; while Foro TV strengthens its place as Mexico’s number one news channel. Televisa Networks’ productions like ‘Netas divinas’ and ‘Está cañón’ became essential to the network’s audience, which will also have Telemundo’s productions such as ‘Land of Honor’ and ‘Masters of Paradise’; in addition to Mexican movies, which retain their timeslot within the network’s programming. “ Te l ev i s a ’s te l e n ove l a s a re k n ow n worldwide. In 2014 we had hits like ‘My Heart Is Yours’ and ‘What Life Took From Me’, which catapulted the Canal de las Estrellas’ weekly ratings. And on weekends, ‘Sabadazo’ and the fourth season of ‘The Voice Mexico’ made us the favorite channel for both audiences and advertisers,” she said.

In terms of format adaptation,“Televisa has been very successful,” according to the executive.“The experience we developed has paid off. We hope to continue with our realities’ success, with original formats on the air, such as ‘Stand Up For Your Country’, which we have now.” This year, Televisa is betting on great productions for each one of its broadcast TV channels. “For el Canal de las Estrellas,we will continue to produce successful telenovelas such as ‘Amores con trampa’ and ‘Unforgivable’; and soon we will be premiering ‘Antes muerta que Lichita’. In addition, we also premiered our reality show ‘Stand Up’,” she said. Further down south, Teledoce in Uruguay is betting on a lineup of Telenovelas and series from Globo and Televisa: ‘Empire’,

‘May God Forgive You’, ‘Doomed’, ‘The Party’ and ‘The Hunter’. In addition, the channel is also preparing Dori Media’s series ‘My Lovely Hope’, and the formats ‘My Name Is 2’ and ‘Man vs. Fly.’

Teledoce has also added a new season of ‘Show Match’ to their primetime slot, with the successful ‘Bailando por un sueño’ (adaptation of ‘Dancing with the Stars’) by El Trece (Canal 13) in Argentina. As far as series go, the channel is offering ‘Satisfaction’, ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’, ‘Hawaii Five-0’,‘Chicago Fire’,‘Monk’,‘Legal Justice’ and ‘Rex’; along with several blockbusters and Hollywood films. “We had an excellent 2014. We invested in production and having the very best content from the international market,” said Eugenio Restano, Programming manager at Teledoce. Restano also mentioned changes to the channel’s lineup for 2015, for the morning and afternoon slots, which will be all about “information, entertainment and fiction.” The channel also develops in-house p ro d u c t i o n s , s u c h a s n e w s c a s t s , magazines, entertainment shows, docurealities and national movies.

THE COPA AMÉRICA CHILE 2015 WAS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR TELEVISED EVENTS OF THE YEAR.

Up in the North corner of the continent, Margarita Black, VP of Programming at Azteca America, said that in 2014, Azteca’s ratings “grew the most among all Hispanic networks in the US.” In 2014 we implemented a programming strategy to give consistency to our screen, a more stable lineup, building a structure that in the long run allowed us to stabilize our audiences and deliver the best quality across all genres: news, sports, fiction and entertainment,” she added. The goal? To adjust the programming offer to the US Hispanic market’s needs. “We added a soccer team, exclusively, creating the ‘Viernes futbolero’ (“Soccer Fridays”) franchise, adding talented athletes that are more recognizable on US screens,” Black said. Azteca América is part of Azteca in Mexico, a great content provider not just in Mexico but the entire world; an advantage for the US Hispanic network which has access to all of the content generated by the Mexican company in its production studios. “Our offer is based on original productions such as ‘The Extreme’ and our newscasts, some acquisitions, co-productions and

productions made at our headquarters that we believe are relevant to our audience,” she said. Th e exe c u t i ve h i g h l i g h te d s eve ra l productions for 2015, including “the premiere of a Turkish drama production that we believe will be very successful, with an innovative narrative, a leading character that has a different look, all combined in a high-quality production.” In terms of new acquisitions, the executive explained her company is interested in finding dramas “that come in shorter formats and with content that’s relevant to the audience,” as well as “game show and competition formats.” During 2014, Televisión Nacional (TVN) in Chile offered a varied lineup of content, which is one of the public broadcaster’s main goals.“In a time of great competition, where broadcast TV channels reduced their offer to include more foreign series; we retain the idea that format and genre diversity allows us to engage a wider audience,” said Programming director, Nicolás Acuña. In this sense, the channel’s diverse content includes information, entertainment and culture as its programming’s main pillars. “Format adaptation is something we do here at TVN and that has proven successful for years, with formats such as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, ‘X Factor’ and ‘Minute to Win it’,” Acuña said. Movies, series and telenovelas are also a part of the different foreign productions TVN offers across its timeslots:“The content that makes up these formats is incorporated to our programming offer because it lines up with our standards, for their international success, quality writing, high-budget production and high ratings in its country of origin,” he said. Among the channel’s premieres for 2015, the executive highlighted its series ‘Sitiados’, co-produced with FOX International Channels Latin America. The channel also premiered two drama series, one for the afternoon and one for the evening. ‘Matriarcas’, a series scheduled for 8:00 PM with an star-studded cast of 25 actors, and ‘La poseída’, a period piece set in Santiago de Chile in the XIX Century. Daujotas also highlighted the industry’s annual tradeshows as “a great opportunity to see all the genres and products available, which is why we make the effort to see the entire content offer, and depending on what we evaluate and how they might work on our lineup, we acquire different titles.” Karina Medina, Programming manager at Ecuavisa in Ecuador, explained national productions have been excellent for the channel.“Shows like ‘Ecuador’s Got Talent’ reached 27.9% market share in its third season, airing at 8:30 PM on Sunday nights,” she said.

In June, TVN was the channel in charge of offering the Copa América Chile 2015. To this end, the channel inaugurated a Press Center from which it broadcast the games for the main TV broadcasters in the continent. Back in Uruguay, Patricia Daujotas, director of Programming at Saeta Canal 10, said the percentage of in-house programming versus foreign content in the network varies according to the content available in the market and the audiences’ needs. “It’s always a priority to have national productions on our screen in order to maintain a daily connection between our local talent and our viewers,” Daujotas said. As for entertainment formats, adaptations have proven successful for the Uruguayan channel. “We produced ‘Million Dollar Money Drop’ by Endemol, ‘Smart Face’ by Dori Media and ‘Raid the Cage’ by Sony, for example.” This year, Saeta Canal 10 is presenting new seasons of ‘Million Dollar Money Drop’ and

In addition, the channel’s new comedy ‘Tres familias’ reached 22.4% market share on primetime, Mondays through Fridays. “This comedy will premiere soon in Peru and we continue to hold negotiations in other territories across the region, working with the distributor Fly Content,” she said. ‘Combo amarillo’ and ‘Así pasa’ also registered excellent results with their new seasons, airing on primetime at 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM, Mondays through Fridays, reaching 18.6% and 19% share, respectively. ‘Secretos’, a drama series that tells intimate and extreme stories, reached 17.2% share in primetime. “’Secretos’ has already started travelling across the region with Somos Distribution,” Medina said. “International programming also allowed us to be leaders in important timeslots in primetime. Our telenovelas from Globo and Telemundo climbed to the number one spot on those timeslots.‘Trail of Lies’ by Globo reached 19.4% share, and ‘Broken Angel’ by Telemundo reached 20.1% share,” she said. Ecuavisa also invests in format adaptation and this year it will premiere the fourth s e a s o n o f ‘ E c u a d o r ’s G o t Ta l e n t ’ , FremantleMedia’s franchise that has allowed the channel to “consolidate its presence during primetime on Sunday nights since 2011,” Medina explained. “We premiered ‘X Factor Kids’, also by FremantleMedia, which reached 21.3%

Back in May, Ecuavisa premiered ‘The D o c to r s ’ , a f ra n ch i s e a d a p te d by independent producer RC Producciones. “In the in-house productions category, we presented new seasons of ‘Combo amarillo’ and ‘Así pasa’; and we are also premiering the new series ‘Milagros’, a series that tells urban, modern, everyday stories,” she said. The channel is also presenting Spanish series ‘The Time in Between’ from Antena 3, ‘Jane the Virgin’ by RCTV, ‘The Voice of Freedom, Helenita Vargas’ from Caracol Televisión, ‘El chiringuito de Pepe’ by Telecinco and Romanian telenovela ‘El honor de amar’. “We are extremely pleased with the launch of ‘Cannibals’,‘Lioness’ and Turkish drama ‘Ezel’ on our primetime,” said Carlos Novaro, Programming manager at the Uruguayan channel.

(Telenovela / Classic – 150 x 60’) After receiving a letter from his brother Demetrio in which he pled him to save him from the hell he was going through, Martín decides to travel to Mina Escondida, but he arrives too late there. Demetrio has killed himself. Full of anger and pain, Martín swears over his brother’s grave that he will find the woman who betrayed and led his brother to his death and make her pay for it. However, the only clue he has is a medallion with the name “V. Prado Castelo” in it. This way, destiny takes him to be confronted face to face with his worst emotions when he meets the Prado Castelo family members, Verónica and Virginia among them, who were adopted by the married couple since they were little. Martin is hooked into Verónica’s beauty and strong personality and there is an immediate attraction between them, but Virginia, manipulating and lying, makes Martín believe that Verónica was Demetrio’s lover. Convinced of who is to blame, Martín asks Verónica to leave everything behind and marry him. The young girl’s happiness lasts only a short time since, blinded by anger and grudge, Martín is ready to make her experience herself the pain his brother went through, even if this takes his own life. The first one is ‘Escándalos,’ it is a series of 1 hour TV programs, were each episode is a fiction with a beginning and ending.They are famous worldwide scandal. We have finished the filming for Season 1, they are 26 episodes, filmed at different countries. 11 eps. in Miami with Nirvana Films, 10 eps. in Mexico with Caaliope Production, 4 eps. in Panama with Emotions and KM services, and in Venezuela with Idea. ‘Escándalos’ has had a very good acceptance in the market. It has been sold to 9 different TV channels in Latin America and Hispanic USA. The other series that we are coproducing is ‘Tómame o déjame’ (‘Take me or Leave me’). A 13 episode sexy-comedy series that talks about tantric sex for the first time on Free TV. In this series we will have two talk shows talking about tantric sex and sexology. This series is related to a real talk show were we will bring real cases to the audience. We will be finishing the first season by midyear. Regarding our distribution, we continue with our relationships with MGM were VIP2000TV buys Free TV television rights for 14 countries in Latin America. We have a new Telenovela called ‘Buda’, dubbed and ready for the Hispanic Market. A telenovela that talks about Buda’s life and his messages, that will make our audience meditate.
