THE AGE OF THE LAST EMPEROR F The popular epic drama is ready to conquer the international market in 2018, starting with the MENA region during Discop Dubai 2018. The historical series will be spearheading TRT’s vast catalogue, one which includes staples like ‘Resurrection: Ertugrul’ and classic love stories like ‘The Prisoner of Love’. The Last Emperor Drama
ollowing the sustained success registered by ‘Resurrection: Ertugrul’, now in its fourth season, it’s hard to blame TRT for once again betting big on an ambitious epic drama. ‘The Last Emperor’ premiered in Turkey early last year and has been a new hit for the country’s public broadcaster. Now, the story of Abdulhamid Han, the last man to rule the Ottoman Empire, is ready to conquer the international market. “’The Last Emperor’ is a strong historical drama that has done well in Turkey and has already received a lot of interest from around the world,” said Aysegul Tuzun, VP of Sales & Marketing at Mistco. “We are expecting to launch it in the MENA region this year.”
The Prisoner of Love Drama
In this regard, Discop Dubai 2018 presents a great opportunity to showcase the drama to one of the most important regions for the Turkish distributor. Starring Bulent Inal and Ozlem Conker, ‘The Last Emperor’ tells the story of the last emperor of the Ottoman Empire, Abdulhamid Han, who ruled the Empire for a span of 33 years, between 1876 and 1909. As the last Emperor and Caliph, Abdulhamid Han still sparks controversy and passions in Turkey and the Middle East, especially because of how his mandate ended, when he was deposed by the military uprising of the Young Turks to be replaced by his brother, Mehmed V. Produced for TRT by ES Flim ‘The Last Emperor’ has 150, 45-minute episodes and an impressive production, with a period recreation that includes not only the wardrobe, but also iconic buildings from the time. SOLID ACROSS THE BOARD. TRT’s catalogue offers productions spanning all kinds of genres, which has powered Mistco to find business in new regions each year. In 2017, China became a valuable buyer of Turkish animation, powering the company’s presence in Asia. Another example for last year: ‘Resurrection: Ertugrul’ was acquired in Russia to be broadcast on pay TV. “2017 was very pro-

SEEDS FOR THE FUTURE While the Middle East’s relationship with quality Turkish content continues to be strong, Global Agency is focusing on growing its business in Africa and India, where dramas and formats are starting to seed the markets for fruitful upcoming years. best shows to have product-partnerships with,” he added.
“The Middle East has been in love with Turkish drama for almost 10 years, and as long as Turkey creates good quality products, they will always be buying, because Turkish drama always creates high ratings for the channels,” said Izzet Pinto, Founder & CEO of Global Agency, to ttv.
“Compared to Latin America, Africa and India still have quite low budgets for foreign programming,” Pinto pointed out. “That’s why, even though they are important regions for the Turkish industry, Latin America is our key buyer.”
Looking back at 2017, Pinto highlighted the successes of formats like ‘Shopping Monsters’ and dramas such as ‘Love for Rent’, which was licensed by MBC in the MENA region. Mother Drama

Meanwhile, ‘Shopping Monsters’ has become a broadcasters’ favorite. “’Shopping Monsters’ is a daily-strip format, so when viewers are hooked they watch the entire week, creating great ratings for the broadcasters during the five days of the week,” explained Pinto. “They also create great opportunities for sponsorships. Those types of formats do very well. So these two titles are two of the
“I think in the future they could buy more. But if you look at the license fees, Latin America is incomparable. Maybe this could change in the far future but not shortly,” he added. Recently, Global Agency was able to score two important sales in India. First came ‘Rivals of Law’, which aired in 2017, and then came ‘The Remix’, the show acquired by Amazon Prime to be produced in India. ‘The Remix’ is a format with 10 teams that have a DJ, singer, producer, and dancers, who face each other over 10-15 weeks. The show will start airing in March. “When it comes to drama, India is a new market for us,” Pinto said. “We are going to have a remake of our hit drama ‘Game of Silence’, from Tims Productions. Two years ago we had a US remake for NBC and hopefully we will have success in India.” ttv
NEW SALES FOR ‘LOVE FOR RENT’ Global Agency announced new sales for ‘Love For Rent’ in late January. The dramedy was sold in Asia, and the MENA and CEE regions. MBC licenced the series for MENA, while 1TV licenced it for Afghanistan, PRVA for Serbia and BTV for Bulgaria. ‘Love For
Rent’ had also already been sold to Romania (ACASA), Albania (Tring TV), Greece (Star TV), Kazakhstan (Astana TV) and Macedonia (Sitel). The drama has been very successful internationally, especially in Macedonia, reaching a 50% audience share with its first episodes.

“I think Latin America will always be the main buyer for Turkish dramas. Africa and India still have quite low budgets for foreign programming. That’s why, even though they are important regions for the Turkish industry, Latin America is our key buyer”.
According to Pinto, ‘Love for Rent’ was a true success. “It equaled our biggest productions, ‘Grand Family’ and ‘Bitter Sweet’,” said the executive.
A LONG BET. Discop Dubai 2018 presents a great opportunity for Global Agency’s growing focus on Africa and India, two challenging markets in which the distributor has gained ground in recent years.

ews of recent sales don’t stop coming from Kanal D International. The company, the global business arm of Turkish media conglomerate Dogan TV Holding, went through a restructure earlier this year, but business kept going as always. Kerim Emrah Turna, director of Sales & Business Development, Americas & Africa, is confident that there won’t be any slowing down in the future, product of the strength of Kanal D’s catalogue, which includes titles like the omnipresent ‘Fatmagul’, ‘Family Secrets’, ‘Innocent’, and new arrivals like ‘Mehmed the Conqueror’, ‘One Litter of Tears’, ‘Price of Passion’, ‘Tales of Innocence’ and the second season of ‘Wounded Love’. ‘Fatmagul’ has been an absolute success, particularly in Latin America, and was recently ac-
quired by Atresmedia in Spain. In its footsteps, ‘Innocent’ was sold to Colombia and Mexico. “There’s a promising interest in ‘Innocent’ from Latin America,” said Turna. “I believe that interest will rise in the upcoming months.” A GROWING PRESENCE. ‘Family Secrets’, meanwhile, made an even bigger jump, making its way to Africa, where Kanal D is building up a market for Tuskish titles. “The ’ Family Secrets’ sale in Ghana follows the success of ‘Love’, licensed to the broadcaster TV3,” explained Turna. “They are among the first FTA broadcasters to trust Turkish content, and I guess they don’t regret their decision.” “Over the last year we increased our presence in Africa and saw our titles being broadcasted in Ethiopia, Angola, MozamFamily Secrets Drama
bique, South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria”, he added. “Turkish drama is relatively new for the African viewers, but all the feedback is positive, and we hope to create there the same trend that exists in Latin America and the Middle East.” Kanal D International also became the first Turkish company in South Africa behind the power of ‘Fatmagul’, which was also acquired by Kenyan broadcaster Citizen TV. A collaboration between Kanal D International and Red Head Global has delivered some of Turkey’s biggest dramas to South Africa, resulting in series like ‘Fatmagul’ and ‘Matter Of Respect’ being licensed to the e.tv family of channels. Creating trends is possible for Kanal D thanks to a powerful catalogue that has now added some attractive new titles like the aforementioned ‘Family Secrets’, a drama in HD about a rich family that sees their idyllic life shaken when they discover the father and provider has been living a double life with a second family. STRONG AS EVER. Creating trends is possible for Kanal D thanks to a powerful catalogue that has now added some attractive new titles like the mentioned ‘Family Secrets’, a drama in HD about a rich family that sees their idyllic life shaken when they discover the father and provider has been living a double life with a second family. ‘Price of Passion’ is another title which creates a lot of anticipation product of its narrative. The title follows a hit-man, working for his criminal uncle, who crosses roads with a young and idealistic doctor. This encounter ignites something in each other and their blossoming relationship will be put to the test. The historical drama ‘Mehmed The Conqueror’, its highest-budget drama to date, fol-
LOOKING WEST One of Kanal D’s main objectives this year is to keep expanding its influence in Europe. While its dramas are already present in Western European countries like Spain, France and Italy, the goal is to continue moving west. “After conquering Latin American countries, well-known drama ‘Fatmagul’ was licensed to Spain for the first time. The premium drama ‘Matter of Respect’, produced by D Productions, was licensed to France. And at the end of 2016, romantic comedies ‘Sweet Revenge’ and ‘Love of My Life’ were already licensed to Italy,” said Ezgi Ural, director of Sales & Business Development for MENA, Europe & Asia at Kanal D. “Kanal D International is planning to penetrate new countries in Western Europe in the following months.”

AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE DIGITAL ARENA the way how Turkish TV shows are produced and we observe that already”, said the executive. “Some series on FTA channels have already started to change
their episode length. Not only our customers but also the entire industry appreciated the way we have been producing these new dramas.” With the trend growing, Kanal D looks forward to add more titles like ‘Innocent’, the first original production for the platform. The eight-episode series has already being sold to different countries in Latin America.
TTV Magazine/15
Kanal D is also staying ahead of the changes in the TV universe, moving forward with BluTV, their OTT service in Turkey, and producing content specifically for the platform. “With BluTV we are aiming to become the leading SVOD business in the region,” said Turna. “Turkish dramas have great stories and are great productions, but they are produced in the math of free-to-air channels. “We believe that BluTV change

And one of the things I think stand out the most in this new phase is the company’s collective efforts towards this goal.” The executive, former CEO and founder of Fly Content LLC, has over two decades of experience in the industry, having worked in the international content distribution area through important international sales, acquisitions and content development for multiple platforms, as well as creating strategic alliances in multiple territories. At Azteca Internacional, Jasin will report to another industry veteran, Alberto Ciurana, now general director of Content and Distribution at TV Azteca. “Patricia Jasin has a vast trajectory in the industry, with great talent for sales,” said Ciurana at Natpe Miami 2018. “Now I can confidently say that we have the best team to create TV in Mexico.”
Jasin joined the company to take over the responsibilities previously held by Fidela Navarro, who as of last year took on the role of CEO of Dopamine, Salinas Group’s production company.
For Jasin, the moment she arrived at TV Azteca couldn’t have been more exciting. “It’s a very special moment in the industry, not just in general, but especially in Mexico, where we have an amazing activity. Mexico is going through an amazing moment of production and boom,” she added.

SPREADING ITS WINGS By Luis Cabrera / @luis_cabreram / lcabrera@todotv.tv
Inter Medya is soaring after a fantastic 2017, which ended strong with multiples deals for its leading titles, international awards and acclaim for its dramas and formats, and new territories and broadcasters joining the ever-growing business of a company that is synonymous with high-quality Turkish content.
T
he long lineup of successes and accomplishments with which Inter Medya ended 2017 are the biggest incentive for the company to begin another positive year, which has already started on a high note thanks to the results obtained during the recent edition of Natpe Miami.

The Latin American market has become enormously important for Inter Medya, generating good news and new initiatives that come from the growing interest for the Turkish distributor’s content catalog. After closing 2017 with the International Emmy win for ‘Endless Love’, Inter Medya landed a series of deals for the ever-popular drama titles in its catalog during Natpe, starting with ‘Mrs. Fazilet and Her Daughters’ and ‘Broken Wings’. “We presented ‘Mrs. Fazilet and Her Daughters’ at Mipcom, but many clients in Latin America don’t attend that market, so we presented it again at MIPCancun in Novm-

The latest deals announced for both titles in Latin America include sales closed with Wapa for Puerto Rico and the US; with Canal 1 for Colombia; with Pasiones for the US Hispanic market; and with Telefuturo for Paraguay. In regard to the MENA territories, ‘Mrs. Fazilet and Her Daughters’ started the year with a bang, landing a deal for its broad-
cast on OSN, one of the region’s leading pay TV networks. And over on the Eastern European market, the original territory for Turkish dramas, the series was sold to Kazakhstan, Georgia, Moldova, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina, Albania and Romania. “We are proud that ’Mrs. Fazilet and her Daughters’ already found its way into more than 34 countries around the world only 3 months after its launch at Mipcom and there will be many other sales finalized soon,” said Can Okan, Founder and CEO of Inter Medya. “Turkish dramas are increasingly popular and our company, with a variety of high

The boom of Turkish TV content in Latin America is ready to extend to the big screen. Inter Medya and Tondero signed a distribution agreement of Turkish films for cinemas in Latin America. Beatriz Cea, Sales Executive of Inter medya and Cecilia Gomez de La Torre, Associate General Manager of Tondero Distribución, confirmed the signing during the last edition of Natpe Miami. For the first time, Turkish films will be released in theaters in Latin America. After the great success of the Turkish series in Latin America, Cecilia Gómez De la Torre declared that this agreement will be the beginning of a new stage for the Turkish cinema and they trust that it will be a great success. Beatriz Cea said she feels very proud and happy to collaborate with Tondero and Cecilia, who was one of her first clients to bet on Turkish dramas. “There’s plenty of interest for Turkish movies, both for broadcast TV and cable,” she said. “It’s a new challenge, but we have very high hopes for it.” TTV Magazine/23

A Modern-Day Apocalypse Brazilian giant Record TV continues to roll out its saga of biblical telenovelas, presenting its latest super production ‘Apocalypse’, which brings the story of the apocalypse to a contemporary setting, while already preparing its new project for 2019: ‘Jesus’. By Sebastián Amoroso / @sebamoroso / samoroso@todotv.tv
The new biblical super production is currently in its early production stages, according to the executive. The company is now working on the scripts, as well as searching for the right cast, locations and wardrobe. The idea, Andrade explained, is to begin filming this major new drama by mid-2018, for it to reach Brazilian screens the following year. ‘Jesus’ would be another addition to Record TV’s long list of majorly successful biblical productions, following ‘Apocalypse’, its latest biblical drama set in a contemporary environment. In regard to ‘Apocalypse’, Andrade said it’s received “great feedback” from buyers at Natpe Miami 2018, while the company’s sales continue to expand across Latin America, the US Hispanic, Europe and Africa.

P
resent at Natpe Miami 2018, which took place on January 16-18 at the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc hotels in Miami Beach, ttv spoke to Delmar Andrade, director of International Sales at Record TV, who revealed the Brazilian production and distribution company is already working on a new super production to add to its biblical thread: ‘Jesus’, centered on Jesus Christ. While Record TV’s focus at Natpe was mainly presenting its latest Biblical drama, ‘’Apocalypse’, the Brazilian giant’s international distribution division made use of the market to present ‘Jesus’, which will be ready to make its debut in 2019.
Premiered on November 21 in Brazil on Record TV, ‘Apocalypse’ was written by Vivián de Oliveira. Through 170 episodes, the telenovela imagines how the final book of the New Testament: The Book of Revelations or The Apocalypse of Saint John, might take place in modern times, with an ambitious and international plot set in Brazil, the US and Israel. “’Apocalypse’ is based on The Book of Revelations, but with a contemporary twist,” said Andrade. “It’s a very innovative story for the market.” The series stars an international cast, featuring Juliana Knust, Igor Rickli, Sergio Marone, Paloma Bernardi and Juliana Silveira, among many others. Produced by Casablanca Estudios for TV Record, the telenovela is directed by Edson Spniello and created by Vivián de Oliveira, responsible for international hits like ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’, ‘The Miracles of Jesus’ and ‘Joseph From Egypt,’ among others. “At Record TV we are very thankful with the market, which is already receiving our products with open arms. We also want to thank programmers for the constant praise we’ve gotten from them due to these contents; their plots and impressive quality,” he said. In this regard, the executive spoke about the boom generated in Latin America for these telenovelas based on biblical texts, that still distance themselves from a religious approach.
“I THINK TELENOVELAS BASED ON BIBLICAL TEXTS -BUT WITHOUT RELIGIOUS SPEECH- HELP CONVEY A VISION OF THE WORLD WE LIVE IN.” ”The current international market is demanding content that’s believable and that adds value to audiences. I think telenovelas based on biblical texts -but without religious speech- help convey a vision of the world we live in. I think this is partly due to the success achieved by these super productions in the international market,” Andrade said. “We will continue going down this path at Record TV, at least for the next five years, creating biblical telenovelas that also include all the ingredients that make a good drama: passion, hate, envy and solidarity,” he concluded. ttv

A KEY NAMED FERIHA
The international success of ‘The Girl Named Feriha’ keeps piling up for Calinos Entertainment. The drama that conquered MENA and Latin America has already opened the doors to the Indian market and is now set to become a key title to aid Turkish content’s growth across Africa.

The Girl Named Feriha Drama
T
here seem to be no doors that ‘The Girl Named Feriha’ cannot open. The drama has become a key component of Calinos Entertainment’s successful expansion around the globe. After becoming a top drama all around Latin America, ‘The Girl Named Feriha’ opened the doors to India, which is now ready to welcome even more high-quality Turkish TV content. “We are proud to be the first Turkish company to break into the Indian market,” said Ismail Dursunov, Deputy General Manager of the Turkish distributor. “After the phenomenal success of ‘The Girl Named Feriha’ in India, it was easier for the rest of the Turkish content to enter the market.” “Currently we are sold out on the titles we distribute. We have even started negotiations on our next season’s titles. India is in our top five target countries,” added the executive. This spectacular success is the goal that the company has also set for the African market, for which ‘The Girl Named Feriha’ is being dubbed into English. The drama will be airing in multiple territories.
28/TTV Magazine
“Africa is a very crucial emerging market for us,” explained Dursunov. “We have set up a team especially for that region and we have started attending the markets there.” Calinos understands that the work being done in Africa won’t be as rewarding on the short term as it has been in other regions, but they are confident that the investment will pave the way for better returns in the future. “Although the current sale prices are not ideal, we expect that Africa will become a major market for us within the next couple of years,” said Dursunov.
Ismail Dursunov,
Deputy General Manager
“India is in our top five target countries. Currently we are sold out on the titles we distribute. We have even started negotiations on our next season’s titles.” The work being done to empower the markets of Africa and India for Turkish content is not necessary on the Middle East, where Calinos has had sustained success for decades. That streak did hit a bump in the road after the end of their long-standing partnership with ADMC, but the company has already bounced back thanks to the audiences’ demand for Turkish content. “The viewership demand continued and we managed to reach the audiences through different channels,” explained Dursunov. “We are expecting new developments on this matter and we are also receiving positive feedback for our newest titles, ‘Our Story’ and ‘Woman’.” For Dursunov, the bottom line is simple: “Distribution mediums can change, but there is one thing that doesn’t change and that is that content is king.” “The better the content you create, the more people you reach,” he affirmed. “Thus, Calinos will continue its endeavour in giving its clients the best content available, as it has done during the past 20 years.” ttv
