New Biopics in Store for Disney New biopics ‘El César’ and ‘El secreto de Selena’ were the stars of Disney Media Distribution Latin America’s screening, hosted on Wednesday, May 24 at the company’s Burbank studios.
T
he groundbreaking success of ‘Hasta que te conocí’, the biopic based on the life of Mexican artist Juan Gabriel, proved to Disney Media Distribution Latin America (DMDLA) that original content based on major Latin American icons is a winning formula. On Wednesday, May 24, during the company’s screening in its Burbank studios, DMDLA presented new trailers for its two upcoming biopics: ‘El César’ and ‘El secreto de Selena’. “It’s the continuation of the process we started last year with our first original production, ‘Hasta que te conocí’,” said Leonardo Aranguibel, director of Production at DMDLA. “Everyone knows how proud we are of that production. We want to continue down that road with our current productions, one that’s already 70% done, ‘El César’, and an-
other one in pre-production, ‘El secreto de Selena’. ‘El César’ is based on the life of Mexican boxing champion, Julio César Chávez, while ‘El secreto de Selena’ tells the story of the deceased singer and music icon, Selena Quintanilla. During the screening, the company also presented other products from the Disney/ABC family, such as the Marvel series ‘Cloak & Dagger’, and other Latin American originals like ‘O11ce’. Disney also shared its film schedule for the next two years, which includes major titles from franchises like ‘Star Wars’, ‘Avengers’ and ‘Frozen’. Ben Pyne, president of Disney Media Distribution, joined Fernando Barbosa during the screening. Pyne is soon to exit the company after 25 years.

This new strategy will see the end of the multiplex (one video signal in several languages) that has been at the core of the Euronews offer since its inception in 1993. This multiplex will be replaced by the launch of 12 distinct premium cross platform editions. The different editions will enable Euronews to deliver tailored content. Facebook to Premiere Original Shows in June Facebook is upping the ante with its TV ventures. Although the company’s intentions to delve into the video production arena are nothing new, further details have made Mark Zuckerberg’s push far more real. According to Business Insider, which quoted sources close to the negotiations, Facebook is producing its own TV shows and reality shows with the intent to premiere them by midJune; more specifically, starting on June 17, right at the beginning of the Cannes Lions Festival. “Facebook plans to have close to two dozen shows for this initial push, and has already green lighted several shows for production,” said the platform. It has also come to light that the social media network will focus on two types of content: long, big-budget shows “which will feel at home on TV”, and shorter shows, five to ten minutes long, with a much lower budget, which will be renewed every 24 hours. Stories with Timeless Values By Sofía Vanoli / @Soph_VB / svanoli@todotv.tv
Record TV has made its mark in the business as the powerhouse of biblical productions and this year the company is packing a few surprises for the international market: two dramas that have proven to be major hits with viewers and two brand new ones, all based on tales from the Bible.
T

oday’s market seems to be dominated by two major trends: Turkish shows and biblical telenovelas; and nobody does epic biblical productions quite like Record TV. The Brazilian giant continues to strengthen its original content strategy through big scale productions based on Biblical themes that have caused a major impact in Latin American television since the premiere of ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’.
“Today’s audiences are looking for content that can provide some sort of support, that can help them move on, and biblical stories have always been filled with timeless values that can help give strength and change lives.”
“Today’s audiences are looking for content that can provide some sort of support, that can help them move on, and biblical stories have always been filled with timeless values that can help give strength and change lives.” The Promised Land Telenovela
“We’re very happy with the performance of our productions in the international market,” Delmar Andrade, Director of International Sales at Record TV, said to ttv. “We can see we were right in deciding six years ago to produce biblical themes with the quality of the telenovelas and movies, not religious stories,” he added. In making these productions, Record TV has created its own original language, which presents the stories as truthfully and as close to the original text as possible, while also sprucing them up with all the elements that guarantee an instant success: love triangles, envy, intrigue, action, thrill and strong values. All in all, it makes up for the perfect recipe. “Truthfully, biblical dramas were always very popular. It’s not just about our production and the care we place on the quality and development of the shows; it’s also about the topic, the themes,” explained the executive.
“We were right in deciding six years ago to produce biblical themes with the quality of the telenovelas and movies.”
“This is the main appeal of biblical productions,” said Andrade. “And if we offer a high quality production that’s extremely well done, then the chance to have a major success doubles. The situation is completely different from that of a traditional telenovela and the amount of viewers it can attract is a lot higher.” With that in mind, Record’s catalogue for this year will include two brand new biblical telenovelas and two of its already successful biblical dramas, that have been dominating the world stage, especially in Latin America, where the company has closed important long term deals with broadcasters in US Hispanic, Mexico, Argentina and Chile. One of these successes is ‘The Promised Land’, which picks up the story of the Hebrews after Moses, with Joshua as their new leader. An experienced warrior, Joshua is tasked with leading his people to their new destination, but in spite of his courage, determination and powerful faith, the task will prove to be a difficult one. “’The Promised Land’ is already an absolute success. In Argentina, for instance, it’s having even more success than ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’ and has soared to the top of the charts,” emphasized the executive, while also highlighting the second produc-
tion to spearhead the company’s catalogue this year: ‘The Rich and Lazarus’. “We’re also presenting ‘The Rich and the Lazarus’, another telenovela that’s extremely beautiful and presents a very strong and current theme. It’s a story about the fight between the rich and the poor and so it will have an impact on viewer’s subconscious, but it will also present strong values and something that has never been seen before,” added Andrade. ‘The Rich and the Lazarus’ showcases the beauty of Babylon through the story of Asher, Johanna and Zach, three inseparable childhood friends who grow up to be involved in a love triangle that will live along the years. But beyond the love and intrigue they will have to deal with the fulfillment of the prophecy of Jeremiah: the sons of Israel will be punished for its disobedience and infidelity to God’s laws through the invasion of Jerusalem by the king of Babylon. The king, cruel and with no scruples will humiliate and enslave the Jewish people for more than seventh years, until the destruction of Solomon Temple and the fall of Jerusalem. And this war and survival story will be followed up by another epic story under the The Rich and Lazarus Telenovela
title ‘Apocalypse’, a brand new production from Record TV that will be based on the Bible’s Book of Revelation. According to Andrade, the telenovela is currently being developed and is scheduled to open its casting process as early as July of this year. The second brand new production will also tell a story based on the Bible, but its title has not been decided yet. In fact, the executive mentioned that they have 15 possible stories that could fit extremely well in this space, but they are working on choosing the right one. “We’re striving to bring stories that go above religion, we don’t want to direct the tale one way or the other but rather provide an epic rendition of a well-known story; and that has worked wonders so far,” he concluded. ttv
THE PROMISED LAND TAKES OVER LATAM After the hit finale of ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’, Telefe turned to Record once again to stay in the lead, and the Brazilian giant delivered with ‘The Promised Land’, the epic continuation of ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’ that follows Joshua’s journey as he leads his people to the Promised Land. The series’ debut was a major success with 15.6 rating points and a 43.2% market share. The story was the same in Brazil, where the telenovela registered a 25 average rating and 36% market share, becoming the top production in several cities. ‘The Promised Land’ also conquered other Portuguesespeaking countries like Angola, Mozambique and Portugal.
“We’re striving to bring stories that go above religion, we don’t want to direct the tale one way or the other but rather provide an epic rendition of a well-known story; and that has worked wonders so far.”

Chile joined in the party with the premiere of the drama on TVN right after the finale of ‘Moses and the Ten Commandments’, which was the leading production on primetime. Joshua’s story seems to have captivated viewers just as much and came to Chilean screens as the sixth biblical production from Record on TVN.

“We have already signed a first deal in the co-production area. It’s with StoryLab Argentina,” Laura Miñarro explained to ttv. “They are very well-known producers who previously worked with us in another two projects that we really like, ‘Estocolmo’ and ‘La casa del mar’.” The deal will start with the series ‘El robo imperfecto’ (‘The Imperfect Crime’), a ten-episode thriller about a detective who investigates a series of robberies in Europe and Latin America. “The idea comes very naturally of doing a co-production between Spain and Argentina and some other European territory. The idea is to add talents from both sides,” she said, highlighting how fast and easy it was to have both parties agree to sign this alliance between StoryLab and Eccho Rights.

we will continue across Europe with a series of personal trips to meet with specific players we are interested in talking to. We believe that after the summer, we will have a fairly solid idea of how we will proceed with the project’s distribution,” she revealed. Miñarro added that the series’ scripts are currently in development and that they are open to being influenced by the new partners that enter the co-production. “We are open to that option,” she said. As far as Eccho Rights’ Co-Production area and its new ambitions, the executive said the idea is to “add synergies and work among independent producers who have this type of projects, which are the ones Eccho Rights is interested in being a part of.” “The idea is definitely to reach new deals like this one,” she added. And while they are open to working with co-productions around the world, Miñarro said Latin America and Europe are the company’s priorities. “Our idea is to focus on Latin America and Europe, where there are projects currently in development that we are very interested in. And the way we would participate in them can vary. Each project is different and we can participate from the development stages or at the end, according to what the project needs,” she said. “We are open to everything.” ttv
ECCHO RIGHTS PRESENTS FIRST TURKISH DIGITAL SERIES Seeking to take Turkish content’s undeniable popularity to the next level, Eccho Rights presented the first Turkish drama produced specifically for a VOD platform: ‘Phi’. “’Phi’ is a Turkish products, however, it’s very different from what’s normally produced in Turkey,” Barbora Susterova, director of Sales for Latin America at Eccho Rights, said to ttv. It is precisely this originality that Susterova trusts will be key to enter new markets and motivate new partners to join the Turkish drama phenomenon. “It is very interesting for us to sell a different type of product. We believe that it can open doors to channels that have not dared to use Turkish content for a thousand reasons, among them because the edited versions are very long,” she said. “Turkish content is a phenomenon that is working in many countries, but there are still territories and platforms that we have not reached,” she added. “We believe that with this type of series, which are compressed into 60-minute episodes instead of the traditional two hours, we will open the door to another type of customer.” “In addition, I also trust that traditional platforms will buy the series because of the interesting and wonderful cast it has, and the story it tells,” she explained.
Barbora Susterova,
Director of Sales for Latin America at Eccho Rights Presented exclusively with its very own screening at the past Miptv in Cannes, ‘Phi’ (30x60’) is the adaptation of the first installment in the trilogy of books “Phi”, “Chi”, “Pi”; each of which will be adapted by Ay Yapim for Puhu TV. In this first series, Ozan Güven plays renowned psychologist Can Manay, who falls madly in love with Duru (Serenay Sankaya), creating with his manipulations a problem for her partner, Deniz (Mehmet Günsür). At the same time, Özge (Berrak Tüzünataç) is a journalist who seeks to reveal the truth about the well-known psychologist. Thus, touching on subjects such as passion, romance, betrayal and human relations, ‘Phi’ is presented as a series that can appeal to global audiences, with a more universal look than the classic Turkish production. “It’s a very universal look series,” Susterova said. “It could be European, American or from anywhere really. The story is universal, it has nothing local from Turkey apart from the quality of production that all Turkish productions usually have.”

CO-PRODUCTION
During the presentation of ‘La fragilidad de los cuerpos’, which will premiere next week, Turner, Cablevisión and Pol-ka announced a 10-year co-production deal. The companies have set the goal of developing two original series a year, starting with this miniseries produced by El Trece, TNT, Pol-ka and Cablevisión, which is the first project under this deal. However, ‘La fragilidad de los cuerpos’ is the second fiction to come from this strategic alliance between Pol-ka, TNT and Cablevisión, following ‘Signs’. And in March, the companies announced they are already working on the third co-production, ‘El maestro’. Premiered on June 7, the series is offered on El Trece, Cablevisión Flow and Channel 1, TNT and TNT Go.
The Film Co-Production Deal between the Federative Republic of Brazil and the State Government of Israel, which also includes TV production, was enacted by decree on Monday, May 29. The alliance, negotiated between Ancine (National Film Agency) and the Israel Film Council, seeks to increase the volume of business between Brazilian and Israeli companies in the audiovisual sector. For a project to be officially considered a co-production between Brazil and Israel, it’s necessary for it to have at least one Brazilian and one Israeli co-producer, and for each country to provide between 20% and 80% of the production budget. In addition, artistic and technical contributions must be proportional to the financial participation in the coproduction. On special occasions, the competent authorities will be able to allow for the countries’ participation to vary between 10% and 90%.

PRODUCTION
Netflix Triples International Originals Slate Currently producing about 90 shows outside the US and present in 192 countries with a strategy focused on original productions, Netflix is about to take its original revolution to the next level, as it plan to triple its international originals. The plan was announced by its executives at the Drama Summit West in Los Angeles, who highlighted its productions ‘3%’ and ‘Ingobernable’ as good examples of very successful international titles. In terms of what type of content they’re looking for, Elizabeth Bradley, VP of Content for Netflix, said that beyond genres or themes, what they’re looking for is series with “addictive” storytelling. “I want it to be so addictive you can’t stop talking about it and can’t stop watching it,” she said. “Literally, we need everything. What we want is the absolute best of everything,” she added, explaining Netflix is open to all genres and models from any country, as long as the storytelling is good.
