m Fro Ed... the Welcome everyone to the February edition of The Sentinella and more importantly welcome to the month of luuuurve! Valentine’s Day — also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine — is celebrated all around the world on Monday 14th February. Its main significance is the celebration of love and affection. Here in Spain, ‘San Valentin’ is celebrated by men, women and many children who express their affection by giving gifts, sending cards or letters, go on dates, have romantic dinners at fancy restaurants, give bouquets of flowers and buy heart-shaped gifts for their crush, lover, husband, wives … and even their pets. However, not everyone celebrates Valentine’s Day and it is often referred to as ‘Hallmark Holiday’ due to the commercial factors that mean some companies make a lot of money with often-overpriced products. Second only to Christmas, Valentine’s Day is the most popular holiday for sending cards; roughly 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent around the world each year, and an estimated 250 million roses are produced yearly too. In 2019 it was revealed the most expensive Valentine’s Day bouquet was sold for a whopping £20,000. You can see why some people choose not to celebrate! Whether you celebrate or don’t celebrate, it’s still the month of love and that’s one thing we can all do: share some love. There is often so much animosity in the world today, but if there is just one month when we should all make that extra special effort, surely it’s February.

Miracle survival A premature baby declared 'stillborn' last month was found to be alive several hours later. An unnamed 18-year-old woman gave birth at home after being turned away from the hospital twice in Ariquemes, Rondonia, Brazil, where medics failed to notice she was pregnant. Then, the doctor who attended the later stages of the birth told her the baby was dead. The error was only discovered by the funeral director, who detected a heartbeat several hours later as he prepared the “body” for burial. He rushed the child to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for treatment. Local media report that the mother was unaware of the pregnancy and went to hospital twice after feeling severe pain. The baby was born in the fifth month of pregnancy and weighed just 1kg (2lbs 3oz). The baby's health status is currently unclear and the investigation is ongoing. A year apart Twins born just 15 minutes apart ended up having separate birthdays in different years — an event that has around a one in two million chance of happening. Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo welcomed their son Alfredo Antonio Trujillo at a medical centre in California at 11.45pm on New Year's Eve, 2021. But just after the clock struck midnight, his twin sister Aylin Yolanda Trujillo was born, making her birthday New Year's Day, 2022. The fraternal twins join three older siblings, two girls and a boy.

Strange News (Continued) A Sicilian mafia fugitive who had been on the run for nearly 20 years was caught after being spotted on Google Street View.

A Facebook profile for the now-closed restaurant revealed a photo of Gammino— recognisable by a scar on the left side of his chin — and the business even offered a "Sicilian dinner".

Gioacchino Gammino, 61, was tracked down to Galapagar in Spain — a town near Madrid — after a picture showed a man resembling him chatting outside a fruit shop.

The Street View that proved his downfall also shows him outside another establishment bearing his fake name, El Huerto de Manu (Manu's Orchard.)

Police had suspected he was in the country but had been unable to find him.

Gammino was the boss of the Stidda mafia group in Agrigento, Sicily, according to La Repubblica, and Gammino had been convicted of murder before escaping from Rome's Rebibbia prison in 2002.

Googled!

"The photogram helped us to confirm the investigation we were developing in traditional ways," said Nicola Altiero, deputy director of Italy's anti-mafia unit (DIA). Gammino was going by the name of Manuel, according to Italy's La Repubblica newspaper, and had previously worked as a chef at a restaurant called La Cocina de Manu (Manu's kitchen).

Making Friends At Work Things NOT to say at work… I’m really easy to get along with once you people learn to see it my way. I’ll try being nicer if you’ll try being smarter. It sounds like English, but I can’t understand a damn word you’re saying. I like you. You remind me of myself when I was young and stupid. I’m already visualising the duct tape over your mouth. I will always cherish the initial misconceptions I had about you. I’m not being rude. You’re just insignificant.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left. If I throw a stick, will you leave? Errors have been made. Others will be blamed. Whatever kind of look you were going for, you missed. I’m trying to imagine you with a personality. Too many freaks, not enough circuses. Nice perfume. Must you marinate in it? Chaos, panic and disorder. My work here is done.

Do I look like a people person? How do I set a laser printer to stun? This isn’t an office. It’s hell with fluorescent lighting.

How Many Zeros In A Billion This is too true to be funny. The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of it's releases. A billion seconds ago it was 1959. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive. A billion hours ago our ancestors were Living in the Stone Age. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet. A billion pounds ago was only 13 hours and 12 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it. Building Permit Tax, Cigarette Tax, Corporate Income Tax, Income Tax, Vat Tax, Unemployment Tax, Fishing License Tax, Food Licence Tax, Fuel Permit Tax,

Petrol/Diesel Tax, Hunting Licence Tax, Inheritance Tax, Inventory Tax, (tax on top of tax), Liquor Tax, Luxury Tax, Marriage License Tax, Property Tax, Real Estate Tax, Service Charge Taxes, Social Security Tax, Road Usage Tax, Local Tax, Vehicle License Registration Tax, Vehicle Sales Tax and Workers Compensation Tax. Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was one of the most prosperous in the world. We had absolutely no national debt... We had the largest middle class in the world... And Mum stayed home to raise the kids. What happened?

Since they´re always going on about how Tofu, Quorn, meat substitute, etc., ‘tastes exactly like the real thing’, they won´t know the difference will they! Single men: Convince people that you have a girlfriend by standing outside Bodyshop with several bags of shopping, looking at your watch and occasionally glancing inside. Shoes last twice as long if only worn every other day. Pet owners: Hard boiled eggs cut in half vertically and with the yolk removed, make ideal minature porcelain style urinals for hamsters and guinea pigs.

Rapper: Avoid having to say ‘Know what I am sayin’ all the time by actually speaking clearly in the first place. At supermarket checkouts a Toblerone box makes a handy ‘next customer please’ sign for dyslexic shoppers. Girls: Don’t worry about a nice dress for that important first date. All he’s interested in is seeing you starkers. Avoid parking tickets by leaving your windscreen wipers turn to ‘fast wipe’ whenever you leave your car parked illegally. Not Cool You are no longer "cool" when… 1. The pattern on your shorts and couch match. 2. You criticise the kids of today for their satanic suicide-inducing music, forgetting that you rocked to Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath. 3. You call the police on a noisy party next door instead of grabbing beer and joining it. 4. You turn down free tickets to a rock concert because you have to work the next day. 5. All the cars behind you flash their headlights. 6. You bought your first car for the same price you paid for your son's new running shoes.

Couples That Exercise Together Stay Together It’s much easier to get out of a routine than into one. That said, wouldn’t you want someone by your side who’s encouraging you to push yourself? Well, that just happens to be one of many reasons why couples who train together, stay together Of course, working out together isn’t a sure fire guarantee of forever bliss, but when you train together, it really can have positive benefits in your relationship. Here, we will focus on four reasons why couples who train together stay together. 1. Train Together & Be Happy Feeling happier is a natural byproduct of exercise due to the feel-good endorphins that you release; so working out together makes you happier, top that off with a boost in your self-confidence, and it’s a win-win for you and your relationship. 2. Train Together & Have Quality Time Exercising together means built-in quality time. The more quality time you have with each other helps keep your relationship healthy. When life, jobs, and kids get in the

way, it can be hard to carve out alone time for you and your partner. When you prioritise your workouts as a team, you’ll likely keep those “appointments” together, further nurturing yourself and your relationship. 3. Train Together & Achieve Goals Together When partners care about fitness, it becomes easier to reach fitness goals. Just like working out with a friend, holding a common goal of improved fitness. 4. Train Together & Appreciate the Routine When you train together, your partner doesn’t get annoyed when you want to work your schedule around your time at the gym. You respect each other’s dedication and have an appreciation for the goals you’re working to achieve. Bodyworks is now offering special personal training plans for couples. Interesting Facts... Sao Tome and Principe was founded by Portuguese in 1470. The island of Sao Tome was named after Saint Thomas by the Portuguese explorers as they arrived here on Saint Thomas’ day. Sao Tome gained independence in 1975. Principe became autonomous in 1995. It was one of the first countries in Africa to adopt democracy. The first elections were held in 1991 which were transparent and fair, a little unusual and rare in the African continent. The elections are still held without any chaos and violence which is a major feat for the country. Cocoa is the main crop of the island nation and it represents 95% of the country’s export. It was once the world’s largest producer of cocoa. The country comprises largely of populations with slave ancestry. Before Cocoa, Sao Tome was the leading producer and exporter of sugarcane during the 17th century. These plantations were worked by slaves, mostly of Jewish origins and their descendants now make up for the population of the country.

Out And About In Torrox Torrox is the name of a collection of locations situated east of Torre Del Mar. This is a popular spot to live and holiday for both Spanish and other European nations with one big factor being it has the best climate in Europe. Each of these places have much to offer in their own right and collectively, they form a lovely area to live, work and relax. Torrox Costa is located just 15km from Torre Del Mar. Torrox Costa has a totally different character and personality to its near neighbour. Like much of this coast, there’s an impressive promenade that sweeps the length of the beaches here. At its eastern end, just past the lighthouse, the beach is dog friendly and is a great spot to let your furry friend run along the shoreline.

w

Torrox Pueblo is situated at the foothills of the Alpujarra mountains, a couple of miles inland from Torrox Costa. This is traditional white-washed village set in a green valley. There’s a traditional Spanish feel to this small village, despite it being the home to many people from other parts of the world.

w

Located between Torrox Costa and Pueblo, Torrox Park is a large collection of urbanisations that are popular relocation spots with those who decide to make this area of Axarquía their home. There’s property to suit every budget and style: spacious villas, townhouses and apartments along with a large and well equipped mobile home park that allows all year living. Whilst, in itself, Torrox Park, doesn’t offer much for day trippers, many visitors stay here as homes are frequently listed for holiday rental. It does provide all the services required for a smooth stay or relocation: bars, restaurants, supermarkets as well as doctors, chemists, hairdressers etc. The combination of Torrox Costa, Pueblo and Park is a winning one. Each has their own distinct character but each are connected to form an excellent place to stay, explore and maybe even to live.

Quack Quack! ‘Life’ thoughts by Ducky! I saw a woman wearing a sweat shirt with 'Guess' on it. So I said 'Implants?' She hit me. How come we choose from just two people to run for president and over fifty for Miss America?

Now that food has replaced sex in my life, I can't even get into my own pants. I signed up for an exercise class and was told to wear loose fitting clothing.. If I HAD any loose fitting clothing, I wouldn't have signed up in the first place! When I was young we used to go 'skinny dipping,' now I just 'chunky

dunk.' Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference. Wouldn't it be nice if whenever we messed up our life we could simply press 'Ctrl Alt Delete' and start all over? AMEN, AMEN!! Wouldn't you know it..... Brain cells come and brain cells go, but FAT cells live forever. Marriage changes passion. Suddenly you're in bed with a relative. And remember: life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

Love Him Or Hate Him Simon Cowell has been out the limelight for a while, but he has admitted being "appalled" by the way he has talked to some talent show contestants. So, is Simon really that harsh or just funny? Here are a few of Mr. Cowell's famous put-downs to help you make your mind up…

"Let me throw a mathematical dilemma at you – there's 500 left, well how come the odds of you winning are a million to one?" "Shave off your beard and wear a dress. I think you’d be a great female impersonator."

"There’s as much chance of you being a pop star or a rock star as me flying to the moon tomorrow for breakfast." "You have the personality of a handle." "You sounded like you were being strangled." "You came in, you called yourself champagne and you sounded like house wine." "You doing that ballad is rather like casting Ricky Gervais as Rambo." "You have just invented a new form of torture."

"Your mouth is far too big when you sing. It's like looking in to a cave... I've never seen anything so huge in my life. Absolutely terrible." "If you sung like this 2,000 years ago, people would've stoned you." "I could sell you as a sleeping aid. I've never heard anything more boring in my life."

Valentine’s Day Superstitions Take care out there.... It is said that the kind of bird a girl watches on Valentine's Day predicts her future husband. For instance: Sparrow - a poor man Owl - remain spinster Bluebird - a happy man Blackbird - a priest or clergyman Crossbill - an argumentative man If an apple is cut in half, the number of seeds found inside the fruit will indicate the number of children that individual will have. To be awoken by a kiss on Valentine's Day is considered lucky. On Valentine's Day, the first guy's name you read in the paper or hear on the TV or radio will be the name of the man you will marry.

If you see a squirrel on Valentine's Day, you will marry a cheapskate who will hoard all your money.

Time To Educate You! "New" meanings to Old sayings: 1) There is an old Hotel/Pub in Marble Arch, London which used to have gallows adjacent. Prisoners were taken to the gallows (after a fair trial of course) to be hung. The horse drawn dray, carting the prisoner was accompanied by an armed guard, who would stop the dray outside the pub and ask the prisoner if he would like ''one last drink''. If he said yes it was referred to as "one for the road" If he declined, that prisoner was "on the wagon" 2) They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot and then once a day it was taken and sold to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive you were "Piss Poor". But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot they "Didn't have a pot to piss in" and were the lowest of the low.

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s: 3) Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June. However, since they were starting to smell brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married. 4) Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water!"

Was Dry January a bust? Are you struggling to give up the booze? The festive season is a distant memory, and Dry January has come and gone. Did you keep on track with a New Year’s resolution to cut back on the booze, or was an alcohol-free January a complete bust, and you barely made it out of the starting gates before you just needed to have that drink? Millions of people worldwide struggle with problems related to alcohol use. If you often drink more, or for longer than you planned to; have tried to cut back (or stop) and found you couldn’t; drink to deal with feelings and emotions; or if your drinking is interfering with your life – responsibilities, relationships, finances, or health – then you could have a problem with alcohol. There is a solution, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) - a 12 Step fellowship support group that has helped people all over the world with their problem drinking. If the consequences of your alcohol use are getting too much, if you are ready to stop drinking, or want support to help you try, then don’t wait until it gets any worse. You may feel that life without alcohol will be unbearable, no fun at all or dull beyond words – this isn’t true. Here members of AA talk about how their lives have not only got better but improved beyond their wildest dreams. “My name is Claire, and I am 38 years old. When I came to AA, I thought I had lost everything, my family, friends, jobs, house, along with my dignity and self-worth. My mind was completely broken. The obsession and compulsion to drink had completely taken over and I couldn’t stop. I didn't know who I was anymore. I didn't know what else to do but to end my life, the alcoholic in me had completely taken control. With the help of the wonderful people that I

met in AA I began to feel safe and loved. I was given support and guidance and I stopped feeling so vulnerable. Two years on and my life is so completely different. I have a successful business, I'm getting married, and I have a house that's paid for. The biggest thing though, for me, was re-connecting with my family. Every day is a blessing and I no longer fear life.” “I’m Louis and I have been sober for nearly 15 years. I lost both my parents to alcoholism and swore it wouldn’t happen to me. Then what started as binge drinking in my teens turned into a way to manage my stress and anxiety. Before I knew it, I realised I had a serious drinking problem, and I was humiliated and angry. I went along to my first meeting with a friend who thought they had a problem. I was only going for support but whilst I was there, I was identifying with everything that was being said. Since that first meeting I haven’t looked back. I found a bunch of people who were willing to love me and care for me until I could love myself. Today I am a caring and loving person, with an amazing family which I adore, six children, most of whom have never seen me drink. The life I have here in Spain is a gift.” There are meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, with friendly people who will understand, held daily throughout the Costa del Sol. Meetings are free to attend, and anyone who thinks they may have a problem with alcohol is welcome. Spanish Valentine So here I am at Malaga airport with two suitcases, on standby for the next flight to the UK. I’d had enough! I was going back after my dream turned into a nightmare in Spain. But let me go back a little. John and I had been living together for a few years when we decided to try to make our dream come true. We had our own recruitment business that we could leave in our manager’s capable hands and we thought it would be great to have a place we could disappear to, especially during the horrible English winters. After some searching, we bought a little house “in need of reform” in the middle of a small valley in Spain. It was wonderful at first; blue skies, warm sunshine, with a lovely little white pueblo not too far a drive from the house. There was the gorgeous smell of country herbs and the wonderful fruit and nut trees growing all around. Everyone we met was so friendly, even though our Spanish was very limited, and we felt we had truly found paradise. The house was lovely, with fantastic views to the mountains; not too much land, but then we couldn’t handle acres of it! What we had really looked forward to was putting our own stamp on the house; repairing the odd damaged wall, putting in a bathroom and kitchen, making some sort of path to the front door. You know, little things like that! I knew there was work to be done - but what work! We had spent months digging, moving, building, painting. It was lovely in the spring with the clouds of almond blossom, wafting it’s magic perfume towards us. We would work in the mornings, then go to the village for wine and tapas a few times each week. In the evenings, it was bliss, sitting out under the incredible sky, so full of stars I could hardly believe it was real. Summer was good too, except for the exhausting heat, and the pesky mossies who

seemed to think I was the only food supply in Spain. We were both working really hard, but John seemed to be totally wrapped up in it all. Oh, he looked wonderful; his hair bleached blond by the sun and his tanned muscles getting better every day (eat your heart out Brad Pitt!) It wasn’t so good for me, as I’ll tell you now. The wet season arrived, and I never seemed to be out of jeans and wellies, squishing through mounds of mud. My once dewy English complexion was now looking leathery and grey, my hair dull and what fingernails I had left were short and grubby. I lived in jeans, wellies, a big jumper and my hair tucked under a woolly hat for protection. It was like this that John suggested we go down to the village for lunch! “Haven’t been for ages” He said, “No time to change”. So off we went. Manolo’s bar was our usual watering hole and I looked forward to a nice tapas and a glass of red wine, but today something was different. Behind the bar stood Carmen! All voluptuous with long shiny black hair, ruby lips and scarlet talons to die for! John was captivated. The twit kept going on about how luscious her hair was and how on earth did she keep her nails so beautiful working in the bar. The final straw came when Carmen asked him if I was his little brother! He nearly fell of his stool, laughing so much. So did everyone else. I was heartbroken! I tried to laugh along with everyone, but inside I just curled up. So it was that, after a stony silence on the way back to the house, we had an almighty row. I went over the top. All the frustrations of the past months came to the surface. I said some unfair things and ended up telling John that when I was gone, he could ask Carmen to come and do the digging! Then I stormed upstairs and began to pack.

Spanish Valentine (Continued) In silence, John drove me to the airport. As we parted, he gave me my puzzle book, the one I always work on while waiting for a flight. I walked away, back straight, fighting tears and inside pleading for him to ask me to stay, but he didn’t. So here I am, waiting for a flight. Might as well do a puzzle. I open the book, and there taped to the page is a piece of paper that says Please don’t leave me all alone Without you it’s a house – not home I don’t want any skies of blue Or sunny days if not with you You are my dream, my love, my life Please say that you will be my wife And that for ever you’ll be mine My perfect Spanish valentine! As the tears flow down my face, I look up and see him standing in front of me! He pulls me

to my feet, wraps his arms around me, and says, “Come on precious, let’s go home”. And we do. “Spanish Valentine” Written by Patricia Gabbitas, Email: patriciagabbitas@gmail.com

It’s Only A Film’s World What we learn from films

Medieval peasants had perfect teeth.

All hotel beds have special L-shaped cover sheets which reach up to the armpit level on a woman, but only to waist level on the man lying beside her.

Any person waking from a nightmare will sit bolt upright and pant.

All grocery shopping bags contain at least one loaf of French bread. It’s easy for someone to land a plane providing there is someone in the control tower to talk you down. The ventilation system of any building is the perfect hiding place. No one will ever think of looking for you in there and you can travel to any part of the building you want without difficulty. The Eiffel Tower can be seen from any window in Paris.

Any lock can be picked by a credit card or a paper clip in seconds – unless it’s the door to a burning building with a child trapped inside. A man will show no pain while taking the most ferocious beating, but will wince when a woman tries to clean his wounds. All bombs are fitted with electronic timing devices with large red readouts so you know exactly when they are going to go off. A detective can only solve a case once he has been suspended from duty. If you need to reload your gun, you will always have more ammunition, even if you haven’t been carrying any before now.

Vanilla Pudding Robbery Excerpted from an article which appeared in The Dublin Times about a bank robbery ‘Once inside the bank shortly after midnight, their efforts at disabling the security system got underway immediately. The robbers, who expected to find one or two large safes filled with cash & valuables, were surprised to see hundreds of smaller safes throughout the bank. The robbers cracked the first safe's combination, and inside they found only a small bowl of vanilla pudding. As recorded on the bank's audio tape system, one robber said, 'At least we'll have a bit to eat.' The robbers opened up a second safe, and it also contained nothing but vanilla pudding. The process continued until all safes were opened. They did not find one pound sterling, a

diamond, or an ounce of gold. Instead, all the safes contained covered little bowls of pudding. Disappointed, the robbers made a quiet exit, each leaving with nothing more than a queasy, uncomfortably full stomach. The newspaper headline read: ‘Ireland’s largest Sperm Bank robbed early this morning’. I don’t know about you but I feel a bit queasy just reading it!!

Writers: Peter Craig, Hillary Seitz, Courtenay Miles Director: Nora Fingscheidt Stars: Sandra Bullock, Viola Davis, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, Richard Thomas, W Earl Jones Produced by: Sanda Bullock Rating: 15 Sally Wainwright’s award-winning ITV crime drama Unforgiven has been redeveloped for Netflix as a feature film; it has been transplanted from Yorkshire to Seattle, and the title has been changed, perhaps to prevent any confusion with the Clint Eastwood movie. Sandra Bullock takes over Suranne Jones’s leading role as Ruth Slater, a woman released from prison on licence after 20 years for killing a cop in a semi-accidental

Now she is obsessed with tracking down her only family: kid sister Katherine, who was put up for adoption after Ruth was sent down. On release, Ruth goes to a grim hostel downtown, checks in with her tough-but-fair parole officer Vincent (Rob Morgan), and gets a scuzzy job gutting fish, where she develops a highly implausible romantic spark with fellow fish-gutter Blake (Jon Bernthal). She then manages to befriend John Ingram (Vincent D’Onofrio), the corporate lawyer who happens to live with his wife (Viola Davis) and kids in Ruth’s old house (the one she killed the cop in). Ruth persuades him to help her to make contact with the uptight adoptive parents who are deeply protective of the now teenaged Katherine (Aisling Franciosi), who remembers much more of the trauma than they realise. Meanwhile, the dead cop’s grown-up sons are seething with vengeful rage. The Unforgivable was released in December and is available on Netflix. Star Rating ****/*****

Halting Erosion Using Vetiver From Vetiver Spain Our Nursery is open by appointment only depending on the current travel restrictions. We have Moringa seedlings, Organic Moringa powder and Comfrey plants. We also have some local trees and some exotic trees from Africa. Vetiver is a rapid growing and non-invasive sterile clump grass with a height of 1-2 metres and a root system of 3-4 metres in depth. We have been providing Vetiver throughout the EU for almost 10 years now. We are located in Sayalonga where we can plant year round but our best results by far start in February. The reason is that Vetiver is indigenous to India and Vetiver loves the heat of the summer. Use Vetiver cuttings as mulch around all of your fruit trees. Decomposing Vetiver improves soil quality, keeps the weeds down and the insects away all while helping to maintain soil moisture. Vetiver is a nutritious and replenishable animal fodder. Horses and pigs love it. We use it in our chicken pens replacing hay because it stops mites. In these 2 photos you will see land prepared for Vetiver and the results 2 years later. We also use Vetiver along driveways and sidewalks. It also makes a great and inexpensive ornamental hedge Here is a link to a short video showing the results. https://youtu.be/rjTmb_LL2uo We suggest planting now, as this is the BEST time of the year to plant. To see more images of Vetiver go to this link. https://www.vetiverspain.org/photo-gallery.html Presently we have some specials, which include free shipping to numerous locations

De Cotta Law Do I need a lawyer when I sell my property? The simple answer to this question is Yes. Why? Firstly, the taxation on sales of property is case specific; whilst you may be given an estimate by the estate agents, each particular sale should be reviewed by a lawyer. Secondly, with the licencing of rural properties now an important issue, you don´t want to find monies are retained indefinitely unless you understand why and have a lawyer who follows up on these matters. For British clients there can be the additional worry about converting the funds into sterling from euros. If you are considering selling, it is a good idea to get legal advice early on to avoid any unexpected problems on the day. In a number of transactions between British people, we have been able to undertake the transaction in sterling provided the Notary is satisfied they have evidence of the payment for the sale. If there is a mortgage on the property which will be paid off on sale, your lawyer will ensure that the bank is available on the day of signing the deed to cancel the mortgage. All other debts such as Community of Owners bills, utilities etc can be settled on the day or retentions made to cover these costs. For non-residents there is also a 3% retention on the sale price which is on account of CGT. If you have not made a capital gain and are up to date with your non-resident taxes you can apply for the return of this 3%. Your lawyer can arrange this but in some cases

you may have to wait some months before the return of the funds. There is still some uncertainty about the obligation to pay plus valia to the Town Hall when you make a loss on the sale. If you are not able to be in Spain on the day of sale you can grant lawyers a Spanish form Power of attorney to act for you. A lawyer instructed by you can ensure all of the retentions are correct and provide you with an individual tailored service. The Changing Property Market Despite the challenges that the Spanish housing market has faced over recent years - the recession which started in 2008, the Brexit vote in June 2016 (greatly affecting British buyers) and over the last couple of years, the pandemic – more and more properties are being built and buyers continue to buy. But how do potential buyers find a property abroad and then how do they view it? The way this happens has changed over the years, firstly because of technology and secondly because of other restricting factors that are out of our hands, such as COVID. Years ago, in the UK, for example, we would go to property exhibitions, look in newspapers and other media and arrange to travel to a specific area or resort in Spain and maybe do it with a particular real estate company. And then once we had viewed properties with them, we would also ‘escape’ from that particular company and walk down the local high street to call in at other estate agents’ offices. Then as the internet became more prevalent, most people started their search online to find a property or a real estate agent and then enquire via their website or via a property

portal. Then they would visit the property. But over the last couple of years, travel restrictions have made it more difficult to view properties, so the video and ‘virtual viewing’ scenarios have grown. Now we are showing people videos of properties online, via email or on WhatsApp. We can also ‘walk people around a property’ in a live video situation, so we can interact with them as we would if we were doing a physical viewing. Then in both these cases the buyers can decide to make a purchase without visiting the property or at least use these methods to narrow their options down to one or two properties before making the journey to Spain. Of course, all the above ways of finding and viewing properties are still used, but the video and virtual viewings are becoming more important. If you would like to know more about this article and how to get a FREE video of your property, please contact Buy A Home Spain: 952 54 75 54 or info@buyahomespain.com See our advert in the Centre Pages (58 & 59)

TV’s top female Susanna Reid has become the highest-paid woman on British TV, having signed an incredible £1.1m deal to stay on ITV's Good Morning Britain. The lucrative deal means that 51-year-old Susanna has now overtaken fellow ITV presenter Holly Willoughby to the title of highest-paid woman. Holly allegedly takes home £730,000 a year for her role on This Morning. Susanna's contract with ITV reportedly ended in November, and it is said that she 'dug her heels in' to bag the sparkling new deal now signed. She knows she is a huge part of the show and is increasingly involved in the day-to-day decisions too, alongside her presenting role.

Carter out EastEnders star Danny Dyer has quit after being poached by Sky – plunging the soap into crisis. The actor – who has played Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter since 2013 – has signed up to an upcoming drama on the satellite channel. The deal is thought to be worth six figures – much less than the £1million-a-year so-called “golden handcuffs” deal he is on with the BBC. But it will open the door to a raft of offers that could ultimately dwarf what he earns now. Strict BBC rules have prevented him appearing on rival channels – which has annoyed the 44-year-old Cockney and some of his fellow co-stars. One source said: “Danny has offers coming in left right and centre, and a lot of the things he has wanted to do he can’t because EastEnders have such strict rules about what he can and can’t do.” An exact date for his departure is not known but scriptwriters must now turn their pens towards Mick’s exit plot. And bosses are only too aware they are losing their most valuable asset.

The actor has proposed to Laurence Fox's mystery fiancée a 28-year-old prep school teacher who supported his 'anti-woke' campaign to be Mayor of London, MailOnline can reveal today. The actor turned activist, 43, announced he will marry Arabella May Fleetwood Neagle in an advert in a national newspaper before sharing the news with his 305,000 Twitter followers. Miss Neagle, 28, from north London, was photographed next to her husband-to-be on his 'Free London' battle bus last year when he was campaigning to oust Sadiq Khan as Labour's Mayor of London for his Reclaim Party. The actor was previously married to Secret Diary Of A Call Girl star Billie Piper for eight years, divorcing in 2007, and the pair have children Winston, 12, and nine-year-old Eugene.

Cele Newbrity s

Golden Globes for British duo Kate Winslet and Kenneth Branagh were flying the flag for the British stars at the 2022 Golden Globes as they both took home awards.

The Reading-born actress, 46, was given the Best Actress in a Limited Series or Television Movie gong for her role as Mare Sheehan in the detective series Mare of Easttown during the largely online ceremony. Northern Ireland native Kenneth Branagh, 61, was awarded Best Screenplay for his semi-autobiographical film Belfast, which chronicles the life of a working class family and their young son's childhood during the tumult of the late 1960s. Mare Of Easttown - which had already won critical acclaim at the Primetime Emmys last year - follows the story of Mare, a detective from Pennsylvania who tries her best to prevent her life from falling apart while investigating a mysterious murder. Although this is a first Golden Globe for Branagh, it marks the sixth time Kate has been recognised for her acting work, after first winning in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama category for Little Children in 2007.She has also won a gong for Best Supporting Actress twice, for her work in The Reader (2009) and Steve Jobs (2016). In 2007, she was given a Best Actress Golden Globe for her role in Revolutionary Road and Best Actress in a Miniseries for Mildred Pierce in 2012.

Beautiful Places: Cortijo El Caseron - All About Living In Nature! Sometimes in the country real estate business, we come across true, unique treasures! Cortijo La Breña, an amazing, ancient cortijo in a tiny, isolated hamlet, that we discovered a few years ago, was a wonderful example – now sold. And today we have a new one. This one has been restored with such love, taste and style, it is worthy of appearing in Casa & Campo magazine! Set on a plot of almost 100,000 square metres, El Caseron has undergone a transformation, bringing it up to date and back to life, and yet bursting with character. This is not your standard cortijo, this one is stylish and comfortable, light, beautiful, modern in places and yet still ancient inspiring! The owners invite you to remove your shoes when you step from the wide, flagstone front terrace with its beautiful views, over the threshold and into the hallway – but you don’t need to be invited, it is just natural to do that in such a house! El Caseron has beautiful rooms throughout, with beams, painted woodwork, stunning floors, and all complemented with the most exquisite furniture that seems made for it! And to the

rear is a lovely courtyard with an elegant pool, and guest rooms set around the courtyard. The land rambles up and down the hills of the Montes de Malaga, and nature is a constant companion, with wild boar, rabbits, and a myriad of birds and plants to discover. The drive up from Malaga (25 minutes) is as beautiful as the property itself, through pine forests with views of high mountain peaks and the sea to the south glinting in the sun, and plenty of lovely places along the way to stop and eat or enjoy a coffee. How wonderful it is to offer such a delightful and surprising property, a true privilege and one of the perks of the job! See details below. Toni Waterman Unspoilt Andalusia Real Estate

The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is seeking animal-loving, energetic, social media savvy persons to come on board. If you’re a compassionate person who respects the lives of unfortunate animals who live a treacherous life in the wild, hop aboard. There is an occasional heartache, but the rewards in homing animals and receiving videos of these rescue dogs and cats romping about in their forever homes is something to behold.

The Spanish groups will be restarting again so if you are interested please contact the Centre about timetables and groups, as because of the restrictions groups will be very limited!! We continue our regular activities: Our shop will be open Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. Time 11.00 to 13.00. Craft group on Mondays, art group on Wednesdays and coffee morning every Friday. We are presently looking for enthusiastic people to join our committee, continuing the work started by the sitting committee, some of whom have recently stepped down after many, many (some, decades) of years of service. Most importantly, the official posts of President and Secretary need to be filled. For more information, please contact acting President Mae Delaney on 601 629 938. (It should be noted that these are voluntary, unpaid). If interested, there will be a long-standing cadre of volunteers to provide all the necessary details and assist you along the way. We look forward to hearing from you soon. For more information please stop by the shop or feel free to call our shop manager May Delaney on 601 629 938

Winning Wines: Thailand Thailand (officially the Kingdom of Thailand and previously known as Siam) is a country in Southeast Asia. The capital city is Bangkok. Today, manufacturing, plus tourism and agriculture are leading parts of Thailand’s economy. Countless tourists visit Thailand, constantly. From the shopping malls of Bangkok, through the fabulous coastal beaches, with hundreds of tropical islands, plus the nightlife and world heritage attractions, culture, history, sports and more, there is something for all to appreciate and enjoy. Thai cuisine and wines are very popular and can now be found globally.

Monsoon Valley is a multi award-winning fine wine producer. Grapes are carefully selected and transported in air-conditioned vehicles from the Monsoon Valley Vineyard to the Siam Winery. Producing splendid wines, with grapes only grown in Thailand, Monsoon Valley wines are now recognised around the world and enjoyed by numerous connoisseurs, as well as being available in 5-star hotels and restaurants, in Thailand and many countries, worldwide. Monsoon Valley White wine has a pleasant bouquet, plus a good mouthfeel and palate. Excellent with seafood and white meats. The Monsoon Valley Red has good red fruits for the bouquet and for the mouth’s pleasures. This pairs wonderfully with red

meats, etc. If it’s a rosé that is preferred, then the Monsoon Valley Rosé will not disappoint, having grapes grown on ‘floating vineyards’ and at the Monsoon Valley Vineyard. This wine has a delicate nose, excellent mouthfeel and palate. A wine that is extremely popular, with many, on numerous occasions. If a Shiraz is required, for satisfaction, then Monsoon Valley Shiraz, from the Premium Range, with its ruby-red, enticing appearance, has it all. Dark fruits are in abundance, with oak-aged barrels contributing to the exceptional pleasures of this wine. Fantastic with red meats. For an aromatic, sweet wine, Chenin Blanc Dessert Wine (flagship) ‘ticks all the boxes’, for me. Having Chenin Blanc

grapes, left on the vines for several days more, ensures provision of the added sugars required to produce this impressive delight, which gives a grand finish. These are just some of the wines from the Monsoon Valley ranges.

As Always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

) : a h a Jokes h A little guy is sitting at the bar staring at his drink when a large, trouble-making biker steps up next to him, grabs his drink and gulps it down in one swig. "Well, whatcha gonna do about it?" he says, menacingly, as the little guy bursts into tears. "Come on man," the biker says, "I didn't think you'd CRY. I can`t stand to see a man crying." "This is the worst day of my life," says the little guy. “I`m a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me. When I went to the car park, I found my car stolen and I don't have any insurance. I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my wife in bed with the milkman and then my dog bit me. So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all. I buy a drink, drop the capsule in it and while I sit here watching the poison dissolve, a smart arse like you shows up and drinks the whole bloody thing!" ————————————————————Two old ladies are outside their nursing home, having a drink and a smoke, when it starts to rain. One of the old ladies pulls out a condom, cuts off the end, puts it over her cigarette, and continues smoking. Maude: What in the hell is that? Mabel: A condom. This way my cigarette doesn't get wet. Maude: Where did you get it? Mabel: You can get them at any chemist. The next day, Maude hobbles herself into the local drugstore and announces to the pharmacist that she wants a box of condoms. The pharmacist, obviously embarrassed, looks at her kind of strangely (she is after all, over 80 years of age), but very delicately asks what brand of condom she prefers. 'Doesn't matter Sonny, as long as it fits on a Camel.' ————————————————————An Irish farmer named Seamus had an accident with a lorry, and was suing the lorry

company. In court their hot-shot solicitor was questioning Seamus.. 'Now didn't you say to the Police at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine?' 'Well, I'll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favourite cow, Bessie, into the...' 'I didn't ask for any details', 'Just answer the question. Did you not tell the police officer, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine!'?' 'Well, I had just got Bessie into the sidecar and I was driving down the road....' The solicitor interrupted again and said, 'Your Honour, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the police on the scene that he was fine. Now several weeks after the accident, he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question.' By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Seamus's answer and said to the solicitor 'I'd like to hear what he has to say about his favourite cow, Bessie'. Seamus thanked the Judge and proceeded. 'Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favourite cow, into the sidecar and was driving her down the road when this huge lorry and trailer came through a stop sign and hit me right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie was thrown into the other. I was hurt very bad like, and didn't want to move. However, I could hear old Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible pain just by her groans. Shortly after the accident, a policeman on a motorbike turned up. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her, and saw her condition, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes. Then the policeman came charging across the road, gun still in hand, looked me up and down, and said, 'How badly are you hurt?' 'Now what would you have said'?

Jokes h a ha Shortly after a British Airways flight had reached its cruising altitude, the captain announced: 'Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain. Welcome to Flight 293, non-stop from London Heathrow to Toronto. The weather ahead is good, so we should have a smooth uneventful flight. So sit back, relax and...... OH, MY GOD!' Silence followed! Some moments later the captain came back on the intercom. 'Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sorry if I scared you. While I was talking to you, a flight attendant accidentally spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!' One Irish passenger yelled............'For f*#k's sake ......... you should see the back of mine!!!' ------------------------------------------------------——A blonde female motorist was on her way to the Gold Coast when she was flagged down by a man on the side of the road whose truck had broken down. The man walked up to the car and asked, 'Are you going to the Gold Coast?' 'Sure,' answered the blonde, 'do you need a lift ?' 'Not for me. I'll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck. My problem is I've got two chimpanzees in the back which have to be taken to the Gold Coast Zoo. They're a bit stressed already so I don't want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the zoo for me ? I' ll give you $100 for your trouble.' 'I'd be happy to,' said the blonde. So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of the blonde's car and carefully strapped into their seat belts. Off they went. Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of the Gold Coast when suddenly he was horrified!! There was the blonde walking down the street and holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd. With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to the blonde. 'What the heck are you doing here?' he demanded, 'I gave you $100 to take these chimpanzees

to the zoo.' 'Yes, I know you did,' said the blonde,' but we had money left over - so now we're going to Sea World.’ ------------------------------------------------------——A lady and baby go to the doctors, who is concerned about the baby´s weight. “Bottle or breast fed?” the doctor asked “Breast” replies the lady. The doctor asks the lady to strip to the waist and proceeds to massage her breasts, pinch her nipples and suck them. “No wonder the baby is underweight, you haven´t any milk!!” exclaims the doctor. “I know, I´m the baby´s granny, but I´m really glad I came!” ------------------------------------------------------——A lawyer boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crabs and asked a blonde stewardess to take care of them for him. She took the box and promised to put it in the crew's refrigerator. He advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen, mentioning in a very haughty manner that he was a lawyer, and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if she let them thaw out. Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behaviour. Shortly before landing in New York, she used the intercom to announce to the entire cabin, "Would the lawyer who gave me the crabs in New Orleans , please raise your hand.” Not one hand went up .... so she took them home and ate them. ————————————————————Here is the latest recommendations for Public Health EnglandWith the shortage of Lateral Flow Tests available, the Government are going to introduce a new “One minute self diagnostic” process.
