m Fro Ed... the Hello and a big welcome to the April edition. Well, what a month March was. Where do I begin… the continuation of Covid, the devastating news of the war in the Ukraine, ridiculous electricity price increases, crazy petrol and diesel increases, lorry strikes, the worst winter in terms of no rain — and then to top it all off, the worst ‘calima’, or haze caused by a Sandstorm in Africa that I have witnessed here in 16 years. Plus, all that was crammed into the first 15 days of the month, so I can’t help wondering what could be next — I really dread to think! Despite what’s happening in the world right now it is very heartwarming to see that there are so many kind and generous people in this area who are getting behind helping the Ukrainian families that have been lucky enough to escape the dreadful war and have made it to our area in Spain. There are so many individuals and groups that have joined together to help collect essential items and even open their homes to help them. I even saw a post on Facebook that one thoughtful man had gone out of his way to rent a property out of his own pocket for a Ukrainian family — how kind is that? There are too many people to name, but we would all like to say a massive WELL DONE done to everyone who has helped and contributed. Despite what is going on in the rest of the world, we must still focus and look after our own lives, however. I saw a good quote recently: ‘Turn off the news; go outside; breathe. You were never meant to carry the burden of the entire world.’ As we all know, this is a very hard thing to do when so many are suffering and we feel so much compassion for them, but we must take the time to keep ourselves safe and healthy in order to be in a position to help others, if nothing else.

Fishy tale An ancient mummified ‘mermaid’ that supposedly grants immortality to anyone that tastes its flesh is to be examined by scientists. The creature, with a human-looking face and a tail, has baffled experts for centuries. It was allegedly caught in the Pacific Ocean, off the Japanese island of Shikoku, between 1736 and 1741. It rests in a temple in the city of Asakuchi. Hiroshi Kinoshita of the Okayama Folklore Society, who came up with the project, said the mummy could have religious significance. ‘Japanese mermaids have a legend of immortality,’ he said. ‘It is said that if you eat the flesh of a mermaid, you will never die. There is a legend in many parts of Japan that a woman accidentally ate the flesh of a mermaid and lived for 800 years.’ The creature has its two hands reaching up towards its grimacing face. Hair is still visible on its head and it has the remains of sharp, pointy teeth in its mouth. Researchers from the Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts have taken the mummy for CT scanning in a bid to unravel its mysteries.

Strange News (Continued) Paid to chew A woman who makes millions from eating brightly coloured food on YouTube says she has the best job in the world. Naomi McRae, known as HunniBee on YouTube, has been making ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) content on the platform for five years and now has nearly 8 million followers. The condition describes the relaxing sensation that begins in the scalp and moves down the body of sufferers when they listen to someone eating; it is also triggered by sounds such as whispers and crackles. Naomi, 27, from Ontario in Canada, now makes more than £750,000 per month eating on camera, and has been able to travel the world with money she's earned from YouTube.

Chilly tip A doctor has revealed an unexpected tip to getting a good night's kip, advising those who struggle to drift off to put a cooling pack of ice wrapped in cloth on their chest. What Outdoor Furniture Will You Choose In Spring 2022? We asked the experts, Ana an interior designer and Tom, the owner of a wooden furniture factory in Sayalonga some of the questions that may be preventing you from making decisions about what outdoor furniture you should choose this spring

The furniture doesn't have to be identical. The important thing is that they are comfortable, fit in with the environment surrounding them, and that there are enough for all the family to enjoy.

(Q): What furniture would work best by the pool? Tom: You'll usually find sun loungers by the pool, but since last season, comfortable swings made of treated wood with cushions resistant to chlorine and salt water have been a big hit in Spain.

(Q) I would like to choose furniture which is suitable for more than one person to sit on. Which would you suggest? Tom: Furniture made of wood is more durable and safer than furniture made of plastic or rattan. I can recommend a hammock on a wooden base that can comfortably accommodate two adults or several children (up to 200kg in total).

(Q): Is it better to choose pool furniture in plastic or technorattan, rather than wood? Ana: Well-preserved wood is timeless and looks beautiful. When placed by the pool and jacuzzi such furniture creates a place of relaxation, especially when you choose the right comfortable cushions.

Ana: In Spain, we often choose shady places to relax outside. If they have structural crossbeams, single or double swings can be suspended from them on ropes. The same swings can also be chosen together with a stable stand. This is great fun for children and relaxation for adults.

Warning - Read Carefully (Continued) Local science teacher’s comments: I have seen this happen before. It is caused by a phenomenon known as super heating. It can occur anytime water is heated and will particularly occur if the vessel that the water is heated in is new or when heating a small amount of water (less than half a cup). What happens is that the water heats faster than the vapour bubbles can form. If the cup is very new then it is unlikely to have small surface scratches inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form. Out And About In Torrox Torrox is the name of a collection of locations situated east of Torre Del Mar. This is a popular spot to live and holiday for both Spanish and other European nations with one big factor being it has the best climate in Europe. Great Idea For A T.V. Show!!! Man – Could He Cope? Six married men will be dropped on an island with one car and 3 kids each for six weeks. Each kid will play two sports and take either music or dance classes. There is no fast food. Each man must take care of his 3 kids; keep his assigned house clean, correct all homework, complete science projects, cook, do laundry, and pay a list of 'pretend' bills with not enough money. In addition, each man will have to budget enough money for groceries each week. Each man must remember the birthdays of all their friends and relatives, and send cards out on time - no emailing. Each man must also take each child to a doctor's appointment, a dentist appointment and a haircut appointment. He must make one unscheduled and inconvenient visit per child to the Emergency Room. He must also make cookies or cupcakes for a school function. Each man will be responsible for decorating his own assigned house, planting flowers outside, and keeping it presentable at all times. The men will only have access to television when the kids are asleep and all chores are done. The men must shave their legs, wear makeup daily, adorn themselves with jewellery, wear uncomfortable yet stylish shoes, keep fingernails polished, and eyebrows groomed. During one of the six weeks, the men will have to endure severe abdominal cramps, backaches, headaches, have extreme, unexplained mood swings but never once complain or slow down from other duties. They must attend weekly school meetings and church, and find time at least once to spend the afternoon at the park or a similar setting. They will need to read a book to the kids each

A test will be given at the end of the six weeks, and each father will be required to know all of the following information: each child's birthday, height, weight, shoe size, clothes size, doctor's name, the child's weight at birth, length, time of birth, and length of labour, each child's favourite colour, middle name, favourite snack, favourite song, favourite drink, favourite toy, biggest fear, and what they want to be when they grow up. The kids vote them off the island based on performance. The last man wins only if...he still has enough energy to be intimate with his spouse at a moment's notice. If the last man does win, he can play the game over and over and over again for the next 18-25 years… eventually earning the right to be called Mother!

He spends a lot of time clearing the junk off computers for people and listens to complaints about speed. 1) Any time you see an email that says "forward this on to '10' (or however many) of your friends", "sign this petition", or "you'll get bad luck" or "you'll get good luck" or "you'll see something funny on your screen after you send it" or whatever - it almost always has an email tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and emails of those folks you forward to. De Cotta Law Business Debt Prevention is better than cure, as De Cotta Law explains... Owning, running and managing a business in Spain during the Covid crisis has been a challenge. Unpaid invoices and accounts can cause immediate cash flow problems and build up longer term issues for the self-employed and for small companies. One of the best ways of preventing this from happening is having correctly drafted payment terms, together with proper contractual agreements with your clients and customers. Some agreements don’t correctly define the company or provider and they are therefore difficult to enforce if you have a problem with an account. For both parties the certainty of knowing payment terms and having copies of invoices and facturas is far better than having to go to court to make a claim. A Spanish lawyer can study the documentation you give to clients to ensure any agreement or contract can be enforced. This applies to everybody from estate agents to hotel owners and a good set of customer or client documents makes it less likely that problems will occur. Spanish courts do have an accelerated procedure for monetary claims and something similar to a UK summary judgement can be obtained that can be enforced against the debtor if they do not contest it. Normally the first step is for a ‘burofax’ to be sent to the debtor demanding payment within a fixed number of days. If there is no response then a claim can be made. You will have to pay court costs, procurator fees and legal fees.

However if you are successful some of the costs can be recovered from the other party. For claims above 3.000€ it is normally necessary to commence a civil claim rather than just a ‘small claim’. This does involve extra costs and we normally recommend undertaking a property or asset search to see if you are likely to be able to recover the debt. Each case should be decided on its merits so it is wise to get legal advice both prior to entering into contracts and payment terms with your clients. Alcohol left me lonely, depressed, and full of darkness Amelia is 35 years old, at her worst her life was lonely and full of darkness…now sober with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous, who she says gave her hope from the very first meeting, she tells us her story. “My name is Amelia. I was driven to AA by absolute desperation. At my rock bottom my life was full of loneliness, depression, self-sabotage, and darkness. I tried to kill myself by drinking and in other ways. Even on the days when I wasn’t drinking, whether I was hungover or not, I was always lonely and sad. I could see no way out. I’d heard about Alcoholics Anonymous 10 years ago when I was working with a psychotherapist, she helped me a lot but suggested I visit an AA group, because there was a possibility that I was an alcoholic and the only thing, in her view that could help me with this was AA. At the time I briefly looked into it but wasn’t comfortable attending closed meetings, so I took it no further - I now realise I just wasn’t ready to get sober, there are open meetings available I just didn’t look very far. About three years ago I realised that I couldn’t control my drinking problem anymore and I participated in a private recovery group. They too suggested I visit AA meetings alongside attending the group, but again I found an excuse. This time I didn't go because I was afraid of the language barrier, I’m not English nor do I speak Spanish fluently so I decided I would feel like an "outsider" or stupid, again I now know I wasn’t quite ready, it just wasn't my time yet. The time came when I couldn’t afford to attend the private recovery sessions anymore and sadly after a year and a half, I was back in the battle against the again. Now I had a small baby, I’d managed to stay dry during my pregnancy but knew I now had to deal with my problems with

alcohol once and for all, no excuses, I didn’t care what I needed to do this time, so back to AA I went. When I first went along, I was totally shocked. I had really bad preconceived ideas, I had expected alcoholics with no work, no home, brain damaged. It was totally different - they were happy, healthy, and successful people, and I was really impressed. Absolutely amazing! From the first meeting I felt like I was finally at home. I didn't understand much in the beginning, however I was welcomed, encouraged and from that very first meeting I was given hope. A hope that there is a solution to my problems with alcohol and a cure for the disease of alcoholism, this was absolutely the right place, with the right people, to find it. Now life is totally different, the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous gives me a design for living. I always thought that there was one piece of a puzzle that I was missing – the one thing that would enable me to be happy. I now have it. I have made huge progress within myself. All my relationships are better, with the kids, my partner and even my work life – everything is easier. Actor’s confession Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey has said he reluctantly concealed his sexuality in order to further his career after being told a publicly gay actor would struggle to win roles. The British star came out two years before finding fame as silver-tongued ladies’ man Anthony in racy Netflix period romp Bridgerton. But he admits to having reservations about public disclosure after discussing the issue with actor friends and casting directors about the difficulties associated with being openly gay in the TV and film industry. The Trials and Tribulations Of Being A Vendor There is always a bittersweet feeling when your agent calls you up and tells you that in the upcoming days, they will visit you with a potential client. Will this be the right buyer? Is it time to start packing? Perhaps we should clear up the house…. These are thoughts I’m sure many a vendor is used to thinking as they go about making sure their house is as presentable as possible. You make sure the floor is shiny, the garden looks good enough to be a part of Kew gardens and the kitchen sink is clear of the usual stack of “I’ll clean them later” dishes. The big day arrives and a small group of people, usually with bright smiling faces, walk through your front door and are enthusiastically shown all the rooms you usually wouldn’t want strangers walking through. Once everything is said and done, they leave just as suddenly as they arrived. You sit down and thoroughly analyse every

look, word and second in the hopes of deducing whether the bright smiles were genuine or if they were just being polite. A week goes by and there is no news. This is the moment where most vendors might start to get annoyed as feedback is an essential part of learning how to better present their house. Most of the time (hopefully!) this isn’t your agent just being lazy, sometimes clients come out for a week to see 10 properties. When they get back home and slowly discard properties, they may not always remember to give each agent feedback. Maybe the agent has had 20 viewings that week and it has skipped their mind. If this is the case a polite budge via a phone call or an email will be greatly appreciated by your agent who I’m sure will get back to you asap. A fifteen year old Amish boy and his father were in a mall. At a pharmacy, a blonde asked to use the infant scale to weigh the baby she held in her arms.
