Un arte que se lleva sobre la piel Por LI VALENZUELA Nuestra piel cobra relieve y es objeto de mayor atención porque simplemente el clima tropical lo incita. Algunos caprichosos han encontrado en la superficie de sus cuerpos la hoja perfecta para tatuar un momento de sus vidas.

Les pregunté si había una historia que contar del Tattoo en Puerto, dijeron que sí, entonces fui a conversar con algunos dibujantes del “no pain no gain”.

El primero en Puerto fue “Mamut”, desde niño dedico su atención a dibujar y oír música más que a otras cosas, comenzó a tatuar desde el año 92 y a los dos años sintió que era lo suyo, no el gusto de mamá y abrió ACME Tatto en el adoquín, probo con otros nombres y luego traslado a Zicatela su actual Zicatrices, desde entonces ha ido afinando su trazo que, en un comienzo fue algo rústico “ni buenas líneas, ni buen color” reconoce con humor.

Los trabajos que más le solicitan son: reproducción minuciosa de un dibujo específico o dar forma a ideas abstractas, en menor medida modificar o cubrir un tatuaje anterior. Comenta que siempre ha apreciado el arte prehispánico, es famoso dice por sus calaveras de azúcar, pero también ha recreado obras internacionales como una compleja pintura del artista M.C. Escher

en blanco y negro.

Recuerda que fue para un italiano al que dedico unas 45 horas divididas en sesiones que se extendieron por seis meses, algo que ahora no volvería a repetir.

Así fue invitado a Boloña y recorrió toda Europa tatuando, desde entonces viaja cada año por varios países nórdicos “allá prefieren los dibujos muy grandes”, por mientras, deja artistas de su confianza que atenderán con calidad las necesidades de visitantes y residentes.

Por ética y estética explica que no hace tatuajes que no van con la personalidad del interesado y se preocupa por el significado cultural que tendrá el diseño, si no es aceptable lo advierte y sugiere otras opciones pues se trata de una marca, un capricho que los acompañará por toda la vida. Igualmente señala que hay áreas en que la imagen no lucirá bien y partes del cuerpo donde simplemente no se puede tatuar, como también hace piercings aclara que siempre evita las partes púdicas.

Estos sutiles detalles lo han llevado a intervenir la piel de artistas como Alejandra Guzmán, Mayra Rojas, Mónica Noguera (de Telemundo) así como de los surfistas Oscar Moncada, Coco Nogales y Paco Callejas. Puedes CONTINUA EN LA PAGINA 4

Tattooing in Puerto: art on the skin

By LI VALENZUELA The skin is something that demands a great deal of attention for the tropical climate in which we live. But the more capricious among us have found that the body’s surface makes an excellent page on which to tattoo a moment of their lives.

I decided to see if there was a story in Puerto’s tattoo artists and found there was. And so I spoke with three who pursue their “no pain, no gain” art here.

The first tattoo artist in Puerto was “Mamut,” who since childhood dedicated his attention to drawing and listening to music more than to other things. He began tattooing in 1992 and after two years felt it was his thing, though his mother didn’t, and opened ACME Tattoo on the Adoquín. He then moved on to Zicatela where he now operates under the name Zicatrices.

Since then he has been refining his stroke which was somewhat rustic at the beginning, “neither good lines nor good color,” he admits with humour. The work he is most asked to do are detailed reproductions of a specific drawing, or giving form to abstract ideas and, to a lesser degree, to modify or cover up a previous tattoo.

He says he has always appreciated pre-Hispanic art and says he is famous for his sugar skulls, but has also recreated international works such as a complex painting by the artist M.C. Escher in black and white.

He recalls that it was done for an Italian and that he dedicated around 45 hours to it, divided into sessions that extended over six months, something he would not repeat. This is how he was invited to Bologna and toured all of Europe tattooing. Since then he travels every year through various northern countries — “there they prefer very large designs.”

In the meantime he leaves trusted artists to serve visitors and residents. For ethical as well as aesthetic reasons he explains that he does not do tattoos that do not match the client’s personality and he takes great care around the cultural meaning of the design.

If it is not acceptable he will let the client know and will suggest other options, because a tattoo is a mark, a whim that will be with them for the rest of their life.

Mercado limpio Efectuando una cuenta rápida de los caninos que andan corriendo sueltos y defecando libremente por Playa Zicatela probablemente sea una señal de que la certificación de “Playa Limpia” está muy lejos. Nos han dicho que este reconocimiento es difícil de obtener: basta un solo montículo de excremento en la vasta expansión de Zicatela para que nieguen el premio. Sería una lástima perderlo porque pondría a Puerto en el mapa “verde”, donde solo 17 playas mexicanas gozan de tal distinción.

Sin embargo, podemos celebrar un Mercado limpio. El departamento estatal de salud premió al mercado Benito Juárez con su designación “Mercado Limpio”, la cual vino después de que cerrara el Mercado para realizar una limpieza profunda y fumigación. Como punto focal

importante en Puerto Escondido, el Mercado siempre ha gozado de una reputación de limpieza.

No hay caca de perro aquí. Sin embargo, falta una cosa: wifi internet.

Seguro obligatorio Una póliza de seguros contra terceros se hará obligatoria en carreteras federales en octubre.

Los conductores que no cuenten con esta cobertura serán multados, entre 20 y 40 días de sueldo mínimo o un máximo de $2,440.

Centre of education Judging by activity on the part of institutions of higher learning, Puerto is becoming a university town. The Autonomous University of Benito Juárez of Oaxaca (UABJO) is adding to its facilities with a new faculty of languages and a distance learning centre.

The latter will offer degrees in law, political science, communications, social work and psychology.

We haven’t had confirmation from the school but locally the word is that the Autonomous University of Chapingo is going to set up a campus in Santa María Colotepec. Chapingo’s focus is agriculture and farming.

Gymnast to nationals Fourteen-year-old Greta Fernanda de la Cruz Cano qualified for the national rhythmic gymnastics competition to be held in Monterrey. The Puerto Escondido

athlete began ballet training at the age of three and artistic gymnastics at six. She moved on to rhythmic gymnastics at nine and has practiced the sport since then at the Centro de Bienestar Social de Puerto Escondido.

Greta will represent the state of Oaxaca with four other participants in the national competition.

Dotes acrobáticos Con una hermosa presentación las gimnastas de la escuela Petit Ollin exhibieron sus dotes acrobáticos en el deportivo Benito Juárez. El público asistente disfruto además de la interpretación musical que brindo la Banda Infantil de la Casa de Cultura. La jovencita Greta de la Cruz, entrenada por su mamá, Shirley Arias, representa a Oaxaca en el campeonato nacional de gimnasia rítmica que se realizará este año.
