Thanks to the wealth of data provided by the United States’ National Earthquake Information Center, we were able to determine that there have been 136 within a 50-km radius of Puerto Escondido, and with a magnitude greater than 4, since 2000. By comparison, there have been 782 within 150 km, which would take in most of those around Pinotepa.

Looking more closely at the data for the wider area, only one of those tremors was over 6 on the Richter scale, a 6.3 on June 30, 2010. Thirty-two were between 5.0 and 6.

Our final figure is the most interesting. There were 124 tremors over 4.0 during that same 150-km radius in 2012, far greater than in any year since 2000. The next closest was 82 in 2004.

The new street signs are very attractive and in some areas will be a boon to lost tourists. There is one hazard about which we would warn: don’t be admiring the signs so intently that you fail to notice the dogshit in your path.

Street dogs are the bane of Puerto Escondido, evidence of which showed up in a bit of a survey we did last year. Among the questions asked of visitors was what they didn’t like about Puerto Escondido. Dogs was the single biggest objection, for the noise and threat to safety.

Anyone who might think about taking matters into their own hands by removing a few dogs from circulation (it wouldn’t be the first time), be warned. The Mexican government passed legislation in January making it a criminal offence to hurt domestic or wild animals. Hurt or kill a dog and you could go to jail for four years.

Ironically, five people were attacked and killed by dogs in Mexico City in December, where some estimates put the number of stray dogs at over one million.

More than a few Porteños were upset in February when teachers shut down the two supermarkets, Elektra, Telmex, banks and other useful services as part of their ongoing struggle to control the state’s schools. That any one group can wield such power is quite remarkable. And no less remarkable is that those in authority seldom challenge their right to do so.

One unique challenge came last year when a gentleman from Oaxaca city spent a day last year protesting the protests by standing stark naked in a busy city intersection. Alas, the shutdowns and blockades continue.

It’s going to be a quiet month — we’ve heard of only two new restaurants opening. The new eating places are Kutta Bar, in the location formerly occuped by Bull Surf. The second is Chango, also in Zicatela, near the Santa Fe on the beach side.

Around Mexico: Artists and crafters from the Todos Santos area are raising money for the local orphanage by selling 40 cow skulls, reports the newspaper Gringo Gazette. The skulls are being decorated in a variety of amazing and creative ways by professional dead cow skull artists.

Gracias a la abundancia de datos proveniente del United States National Earthquake Information Center, pudimos determinar que ha habido 136 dentro de un radio de 50 km de Puerto Escondido, con una magnitud de más de 4 grados desde el año 2000. En comparación se contaron 782 dentro de 150 km, lo que incluye la mayoría de aquellos alrededor de Pinotepa.

Mirando más detenidamente los datos para el área más amplio, sólo uno de esos temblores marcó más de 6 en la escala Richter, un 6.3 el 30 de junio del 2010. Dos tercios marcaron entre 5.0 y 6.

Nuestra cifra final es la más interesante. Hubo 124 temblores de más de 4.0 dentro de

ese mismo radio de 150 km durante 2012, muchos más que en cualquier año desde el 2000. En segundo lugar, el año 2004 con 82 temblores.

Los nuevos letreros en la calle son muy atractivos y en algunas áreas serán de gran ayuda a los turistas perdidos. Hay un sólo peligro del cual debiéramos advertir: no estés admirando los letreros tan intensamente que no notas la caca de perro en tu camino.

Los perros callejeros son la cruz de Puerto Escondido, evidencia del cual apareció en una encuesta que hicimos el año pasado, entre otras preguntas a los visitantes se les preguntó, qué no les gustaba de Puerto Escondido, los perros
